The house is located in an area that lands tend to be devided small, in many irregular small pieces and narrow road access. The site is only 41 square meters with dimensions 4x12.2x2.6x12.4m and the alley approach is only 1.3-1.5m wide, only enough for motorbike to access. © NH Village Architects

The space of the house is designed as one continuous big room and very limited inner walls were introduced. These curve walls and stairs optimize the space of the irregular site constraints and establish a diversity of space while adding a sense of softness. Bedrooms on the first and 3rd floors flexibly open or closed with common space by curtain so that the house could feel open despite its limited floor area. 5

The volume of the roof space is designed so the back roof part is much lower than the front, which allows wind and light to reach deep inside the house. Two windows are installed as top lights that help control the wind in the house. 6

The main stair and corridor concentrate at this back and make the space flow continuously from the lower floor space to the altar room. 7

Alleys on Khâm Thiên street
©Lê Hoàng
Our idea is derived from Khâm Thiên street where the cafe is located. The celling system imitates slope roofs which is one of the characteristics of Hanoi. The walls are decorated by the names of 32 alleys on this street. The chair is an original design inspired by a Vietnamese traditional bench called “tràng kỷ”. The house is located in a neighborhood where every house is constrained by common shapes and colors. The mission of the design team is to renovate the house to reach the owner favourite style meanwhile not to break the general atmosphere of this area. 12

Residential Houses
Railway Station Market is one of the biggest trade centers in Vinh city that was built in 1992 and maintains the typical architecture of the early 90s in Vietnam. After two decades, along with economic development and the emergence of shopping malls and supermarkets, this place is no longer attractive to city residents. Therefore, this project aims to reestablish and transfer it to a new function that is Local Culinary Experience Center. 15

Master Plan
Local Culinary Experience Center is not only a cultural destination for local residents but also travelers. This is a place that people can come to explore local culture, enjoy food, meet people, study cooking, shop for home-cooking, hold events or just have a cup of coffee while they are waiting for the train. The exhibition area and cooking classes are allocated in the old building as they all need to be conserved. The cafe is placed at the center where people can observe all activities around them. The greengrocers are not only suppliers for the residents but also a live exhibition of the local food as well. 16

CONCEPT
A small park is the center of this community. The car route is designed not to cross this park that restricts the noise of vehicles inside the living area.
The approach and technical facilities from the roads is fully utilyzed that there is more room for green zone.
The orientation of the houses is decided as every house is able to catch the wind in the summer nicely.
