UCSU Awards Night is Great Success The University of Cumbria Students’ Union held its first annual Success awards evening on Thursday 22nd March. Staff and students from the University’s campuses in Lancaster, Carlisle, Newton Rigg and as far away as London all descended on the Rheged centre, near Penrith in Cumbria. The awards ceremony consisted of a three course meal and after dinner entertainment as well as the event itself. Awards were given in ten different categories ranging from ‘Lecturer of the year award’ to the ‘Student Academic Representative award’. There were over fifty nominees, who attended with friends, family and colleagues. All awards recognised different types of contributions that members of staff and the Student’s Union make towards the running of the University. Lorri Millar, the UCSU Academic Sabbatical and Project Leader of the awards said “one of my main things I am looking forward to is just the interaction between staff and students and

it is an opportunity to gain recognition for the hard work they do”. The awards came about when Lorri was at a National Union of Students conference. She found out that they funded institutions to take in a student-led teaching awards programme. The mayor of Carlisle Barry Ogilvie Earp said “The Rheged centre is the ideal location for the awards as it is directly in between the Lancaster and Carlisle campuses”. Barry is a former student himself who attended the Royal Veterinary College in London and practiced as veterinary surgeon for 40 years, practicing in Suffolk, before moving to Cumbria in 1968. Overall the evening was a huge success. Tom Underwood, who is a Union Community Sabbatical for the University said “The evening went really well, it was really great to see the people as they accepted the awards, they were really grateful. It was really great to be able to say thanks for what they’ve been doing”.

WHITEHAVEN FESTIVAL SUNDAY 3RD JUNE 2012
May 2012 SCENE 6
A star-studded gig, headlined by British superstars The Charlatans and The Enemy, will cap off a memorable weekend in town on the evening of Sunday, June 3. Tickets for the concert are on sale now for what is sure to be a feast for fans of live music. The Charlatans have secured 11 Top 40 albums and 4 Top 10 hits during their more than 20year career. Fronted by Tim Burgess, they will be treating fans to their greatest hits including One To Another, North Country Boy and How High. The gig follows the 15th anniversary of their iconic Tellin’ Stories album. The Enemy are the current darlings of British indie rock, with their debut album We’ll Live And Die In These Towns going straight in at number one in 2007, and the follow-up Music For The People reaching second spot a year later.
Danny Maudling and David Eldon, from The Boof, said: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the Festival team on the Sunday gigs and this year we’re delighted with the line-up we’ve been able to announce. “All the bands are superb but we have two world class acts in The Charlatans and The Enemy and we know the music fans in the county will be right up for the gig. “It’s become a bit of a challenge to beat their line-ups on the previous evenings and we think we’ve won this year” Festival CEO Gerard Richardson added: “The Boof have done a brilliant job this year and we now have three incredible gigs to look forward to over the weekend. “I’ve been following both The Charlatans and The Enemy for several years now and I can’t quite believe they are coming to our event this year.
The albums produced a number of hit singles including Away From Here, You’re Not Alone and Had Enough.
“They’re going to get a cracking reception and they deserve it. I think it’s a draw this year by the way!”
Also on the Sunday night bill is Simon Townshend, who is known for performing alongside his brother Pete in The Who, and The Lottery Winners, who have starred at a host of local festivals in recent years.
TICKETS Tickets are now on sale; visit www.thewhitehavenfestival.co.uk for more details.

AT THE PLAYGROUND FRIDAY 18TH - SATURDAY 19TH MAY 2012
At the Playground is back… bigger and better as promised by organisers The Mighty Boof. “Last year, months of preparation produced a 1 day line up of calibre that Whitehaven had not seen in decades” said David Eldon from The Mighty Boof, “since then we have been working tirelessly to improve everything about the festival and we feel we have”. This year the event covers 2 days and the line up is even better. Headliners include: Pigeon Detectives, Ocean Colour Scene’s Simon n Oscar, Twisted wheel, James Walsh from Starsailor, Sound of Guns and The Lottery Winners “As last year was our first year we learnt some very valuable lessons and have acted on them for this year” says organiser Danny Maudling. “We got a lot of very positive feedback this year and we thank you for that and hope we have acted on it”. This year the tents are bigger, the bar situation has been dealt with and we’ve added an outdoor bar stage, a bigger children’s area and a Northern Soul Tent as well as the acoustic
and dance tents we had last year. We have also added food traders and vendors onsite. We really feel we will be giving a great festival experience and of course the acts this year are definitely a step up. We really do work hard at trying to cater for everybody and give value for money. Also appearing are Smokin Barrels! We had them play Beckfest 2 years ago but since then they have toured with Kasabian and are now on tour with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds so it’s great to welcome them back to Whitehaven. We also have Symphonic Pictures that’s made up from members of Detroit Social Club who played the very last gig at last years playground festival

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STUDENT GROUP British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Mountain Bike (MTB) Championships 2012
The 2012 BUCS Downhill Mountain Bike Championships was held in Rheola, South Wales on 23rd & 24th March this year. Myself and Jonny White were representing the University of Cumbria. Friday morning started with a track walk in the sunshine, to look at and discuss racing lines. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere of mountain biking and racing was shown through everyone saying ‘Hi’ as we walked up and down the track. This environment makes it an excellent event for first time racers, 2011 being my first downhill race (which I thoroughly enjoyed). Later, everyone was patiently waiting at the top of the hill for their first practise run of the day. Old buses provided the comfortable uplift providing riders with plenty of runs. By Saturday afternoon and ready for race runs, the warm weather had dried the track
out considerably as the first riders descended the hill, putting in their best efforts, with exhilarating encouragement from the track side spectators. Qualification saw the top 100 rider having a championship run racing for the win. At this point everyone else that didn’t quite make it lined the track for support by making a lot of noise, especially if someone crashed then got back their bike to complete their run. Unfortunately, due to mechanical issues, Jonny was not able to complete a race run, although I was able to improve on my placement last year and come 134th out of 250 riders, and placed as 2nd Hardtail. The presentation of individual and team prizes rounded off an excellent few days of riding bikes! By Gareth Chilton President, Newton Rigg Mountain Biking Club.

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Equestrian
I am Laura Rippon and I am in my 2nd year studying a BA (Hons) in Physical Education and currently study at the Fusehill campus in Carlisle. I hope to finish the degree and go onto do a PGCE to eventually become a PE teacher. I first started horse riding when I was 4years old with a Shetland pony called Beau which I still currently own. I started at my local Pony club branch (West Lancashire Branch) when I was 5 years old and still compete for them now in a variety of disciplines from show jumping & eventing to mounted games. Now with my current horse Joey which I bring to University with me, I started to specialise in British Eventing which I am currently competing at Novice Level and working up the levels. Last year I competed for my local riding club at the National Finals in the hunter trails in which our team won and competed in the
horse trails were we finished 4th! I competed for the University of Cumbria in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Individual competition for horse riding last year as the University do not have an Equestrian team and managed to qualify for the Equestrian National Championship Final which was a great experience. This lead me to do the same this year and I have managed to qualify again for this years National Championship Final, coming 2nd in the qualifier, only just missing out on winning the qualifier due to having too many collectives in the Dressage phase. I will be taking part in the BUCS Equestrian National Championship Finals in June 2012 at Hartpury College Equine Centre in Gloucester.

BUCS SEASON 2011/12 On Wednesday 21st March 2012, the final whistle was blown on the 2011/12 British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) season which had been in operation since early October. Up at Carlisle, the two Men’s Football teams finished second in their respective Leagues, albeit that both leagues were reduced to just four teams due to Universities withdrawing teams throughout the season. The Men’s Football 1st had been enjoying a decent cup run but luck ran out at the last 16 stage as they were undone on penalties after a 4-4 draw with Burnley College. The Women’s Netball team started the season with a home win followed by two quick defeats and after going out of the cup in round two, their season seemed doomed. However that was to all change with seven consecutives wins including beating the eventual champions and at the end only goal difference prevented the ladies from winning their league title. Down at Lancaster, the stand out team was Men’s Hockey who started and finished their League season in fine style. Their record of played ten, won ten not only sets a new University of Cumbria/St Martin’s College record but BUSA/BUCS records do not reveal a similar feat being achieved in recent years. A good cup run was also enjoyed despatching higher league opposition until going out in quarter finals. Other notable performances came from Men’s Football 1st & 2nd. The
1st team went into the last two games of the season knowing that victories would have given them the title but it was not to be. The 2nd team also achieved runners-up spot in their league. Mention should also be made of Women’s Rugby Union who were back as a BUCS team after three years out and a creditable league position of fourth out of ten, with their only defeats coming at the hands of those finishing above them. Congratulations must go to all captains/ vice captains for making sure that our teams completed their league/cup fixtures with just one blemish in the One hundred and fifty seven game season. Lets make sure that next year we complete every game.
LANCASTER STUDENT GROUPS AWARDS NIGHT Wednesday 28th March 2012 was not the night to book a quiet meal for two in the Dalton Rooms at Lancaster as over 200 students, dressed in their best gladrags, descended on the premises to celebrate their achievements for the past year. To raucous banter from all groups present, Allan, the Sports Group Facilitator took to the stage and welcomed all to the event, took time to thank all Captains for their support throughout the season and welcomed invited guests who had supported various teams with officials & coaching.
May 2012 SCENE 6
Each Group Lead then took it in turn to award Colours to those members who were leaving the University and finally those Students who had been selected for County or International recognition were awarded further honours by their groups. After a small buffet, the main event of the Evening began to take shape. Lorri Millar, Academic Sabbatical began by presenting the ‘Society of the Year’ award to Cheerleaders who had been nominated for their commitment and support to other teams and for countless fundraising. The Vice President of Cheerleaders, Sian Lucas was also presented with her SUccess Award for being nominated Student Group Member of the Year as she had been unable to attend the SUccess Awards the previous week. She received this accolade after championing Cheerleading to be accepted as a BUCS Sport for 2012/13.
unblemished ten league victories out of ten on their way to winning their League. Allan remarked that from all records available no other University of Cumbria nor St. Martin’s College team before that, had ever recorded ten league wins out of ten and that the BUCS system itself had not revealed a similar feat. The Final Award of ‘SportsPerson of the Year’ was presented by Student Life sabbatical Rachel Garlick. In presenting the award to Laura Rowell of Women’s Rugby Union, Rachel commented that the winner had supported, motivated and lead her team on and off the pitch and transformed them from a development group into a BUCS team and that all her team had the upmost respect for her achievements. The evening finished with a loud rendition of ‘God Save the Queen’ followed by a exodus into the nearby drinking establishments for what has been described as ‘a normal student Wednesday night out in Lancaster’
Next up was Representation Sabbatical Liam Walker to present Men’s Hockey with their ‘Players - Team of the Year’ quickly followed by Tom Underwood who presented Sarah Riley from Netball with her ‘Players – Player of the Year’ award. Comments made those that nominated these winners were, Men’s Hockey were the best team in 2012 on and off the field and that Sarah was committed, inspiring, encouraging, funny, always smiling and had won most ‘player of the match’ awards. The penultimate award of the night was presented by Allan Stavert, Student Group Facilitator who awarded BUCS Team of the Year to Men’s Hockey, who had recorded an

UCSU ELECTION RESULTS By Andy Hamilton
The results are in for the University of Cumbria Student Union Election and Matt Tennant will be leading as Representation Sabbatical after the summer, saying he is “hoping to achieve a lot next year”. The SU say that this year’s election has broken all their records for student participation, with “more candidates, more votes, more campaigning and more democracy.” Matt Tennant will be the new Representation Sabbatical (President), Jade Bradley will take over the role of Academic Sabbatical, Matt Hayhurst will be Union Community Sabbatical, and Peter Armstrong Student Life Sabbatical. Commenting on the results, Matt Tennant said: “A fantastic group of people have been voted into office and I’ve got big hopes for next year. What we now have to do is to start turning everyone’s ideas into something concrete for our students. “It quite blew me away that over 300 students voted for me, considering the numbers in
previous years. This hopefully is just the first step in a lot bigger and more exciting things… I’m hoping to achieve a lot next year” Speaking about his priorities for the SU, Matt Tennant, who is currently the SU’s Ethical and Environmental Rep, said he is hoping for the SU to become more active and campaign based: “I’ve always wanted our Student Union to be a lot more campaign based…There seems to be a common perception that the SU is just about problem solving, so if you don’t have many problems then what exactly do you do? “I want the SU to be a lot more simple for students to understand, I think there’s so many first years who live on campus at university who have no idea what the Student Union does.” Jade Bradely, new Academic Sabbatical, says she is ‘thrilled’ to have been elected: “It’s quite an achievement in itself to be voted in by your peers, so hopefully I’ll serve the students well in this upcoming academic year and create some positive changes.”

students the chance to elect representatives to run the Union and look out for their student interests, particularly important during this uncertain time for Higher Education. Winning candidates will assume office after the summer holidays.
18 Students fought it out for the top four paid sabbatical roles and 50 students registered as candidates. Liam Walker, current UCSU President has said that more students had voted in this election in 3 days “than in the entire fortnight voting period last year.”
Candidates had been trying to reach out to students by putting their ideas and policies across via video manifestos on YouTube, gathering support on Facebook, as well as campaigning across the UoC campuses in Lancaster, Carlisle and Penrith. Nominations for candidates to register opened on Feb 21, and voting was open from March 19 until March 30.
“There is a significantly marked increase on last year and shows we are heading in the right direction”, adding that: “Having over 4,500 hits on the YouTube video manifesto channel is superb”. The total number of votes cast for candidates was 6046, near doubling last years figure of 3100, which the SU say is an increase of 100%, the total number of visits to their online voting portal was 1459. The UCSU hold elections annually, giving
Vice Chancellor Peter Strike has said: “A strong relationship between the union and the university is a key part of the Cumbrian experience. “All the people who have held key union roles in this institution, develop beyond all bounds. It’s a hugely valuable experience in taking there own careers and aspirations forwards.”
