LE HAU PORTFOLIO
I was born in the coastal region of central Vietnam. My childhood was deeply attached to the mountain, the field and the sea. I absorbed the beauty of surrounding nature day by day. After graduating from highschool, I leave my hometown for the mega Ho Chi Minh city. The busy pace of life with high-density buildings maked me overwhelmed. I thought about the differences between the rural and the city. That thought inspires me to balance the natural and artificial elements within my works as what I feel as a child and what I see as an adult. I think that a city or a building should be a natural backgroud for human activities. Now, I am still going on an itinerary of self-examination and experiment... Born Live

CONTENT THIS PORTFOLIO PRESENTS MY FAVORITE WORKS FROM 2011. THEY INCLUDE URBAN PLANNING, URBAN DESIGN, LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. WITH DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES, MY APPROACH TO SOLVING PROBLEMS FOCUSES ON BALACING ALL ASPECTS TO CREATE A SUSTAINING ENVIRONMENT. GROW OUT OF CONCRETE GREAT BRITISH BUILDING DESIGN CONTRUCTION CHALLENGE 2013.

GROW CONCRETE OUT OF
HO CHI MINH IS A MEGA CITY WITH MORE THAN 10 MILIONS PEOPLE. IN THE CENTER, ALMOST GROUND WAS COVERED WITH CONCRETE. THIS CAUSES HOT CLIMATE, FLOODING, LACK OF GREEN SPACE AND AIR POLLUTION. IN OUR CONCPEPT DESIGN, THE NEW BUILDING IS NOT ONLY A SPACE FOR HUMAN ACTIVITIES BUT ALSO A VERTICAL GARDEN TO CONTRIBUTE URBAN GREENERY. THE LANDSCAPE NOT ONLY TENDS TO BE NATURAL BUT ALSO USES LOCAL MATERIALS TO ENHANCE NATIVE CHARACTERISTICS.
THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE NEW URBAN THU THIEM WHICH COUNTERPOISES THE TRADITIONAL CITY CENTER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF SAIGON RIVER. SO, THE FORM OF BUILDING EXTENDS THE VIEW OF THE EXISTING BUILINGS LIKE A DIALOGUE. THE SITE IS A WETLAND. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A CANAL NEAR THE SITE IN THE MASTER PLAN, SO WE PROPOSE TO CONNECT WATER INTO THE SITE TO EFFECTIVELY DEVELOP CULTURAL FUNCTION. COMBINING COMMERCIAL AND CULTURAL FUNCTIONS TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER IS ALSO ANOTHER OBJECTIVE.

THE
ONLY IN
DARK
CORNER ALL OF US ARE LIVING IN TWO WORLDS: THE OUTER WORLD AND THE INNER WORLD.
THE OUTER WORLD, WHERE MORE THAN SEVEN BILLION PEOPLE ARE, FILLS WITH COLORS, DIVERSITY AND EXCITEMENT. IN CONTRAST, THE INNER WORLD, HAS ONLY THE SELF WITH COUNTLESS MOMENTS, MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES OF VARIOUS EMOTIONS OF LIFE. HAVE YOU EVER ASKED YOUR SELF WHO WE ARE IN THE CROWDED STREET? HAVE YOU EVER NEEDED YOUR OWN SPACE? WE THINK THAT, IN A LIFE WITH A HURRY AND BUSY PACE, IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE A SMALL SPACE TO FALL INTO THE SHADOW AND CLOSE YOUR EYES. IN THAT SPACE, WE CAN FEEL, REFLECT, AND RELAX INTO THE FLOW OF MEMORIES. AND LET THE GREEN COLOR OF OUR SOUL ABSORB US. WE NEED THE DARK CORNER. BECAUSE: ONLY IN THE DARK CAN WE SEE THE LIGHT.

WE PLAN TO DESIGN THE
CONTAINER
IN A WAY THAT REPRESENTS AN
INDIVIDUAL.
FOR THE EXTERIORS, WE KEEP THE ORGINAL FORM OF THE CONTAINER, PAINT IT WITH ACTIVE COLORS, EXPRESSING THE DIVERSITY AND EXCITEMENT OF PERSON. WE USE THE VARIATION OF QRC REPRESENTING THE SELF, MYSTERIOUS YET SURPRISING. WE PAINT WINDOWS AS HUMAN COMMUNICATION CHANNELS. HOWEVER, ONLY ENTERING THE INSIDE, CAN WE COMPREHEND THE SOUL OF A PERSON.

LOOK INTO LIFE (PICTURE)
COME TO THE DARK CORNER, DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT
EXPERIENCES.
AT THE BEGINNING, WE MAY SEE LIFE STORIES FROM THE PICTURES. THEN, WE MAY MEET OTHERS PEOPLE, PASSING BY. SUDDENLY, SURROUNDED IN THE COLORFULL BACKGROUND, WE MAY FIND OURSELF E’MERGE FROM THE DARK. WHEN WE COME CLOSER, WE MAY SEE A BRIGHT PORTRAIT OF OURSELVES REFLECTED IN THE MIRROR. AFTERWARD, WE MAY SITDOWN IN THE DARK SURROUNDED BY WINDOWS IN THE OUR INNER WORLD. AND ENJOY THE EXPERIENCES! AT THIS TIME, WE MAY SEE THE REAL LIGHT OURSELVES.

SIMPLE &
FLEXIBLE PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH IS A GREAT LEADER IN THE HEARTS OF VIETNAMESE PEOPLE. EVERY DAY, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE QUEUE UP TO VISIT THE PRESIDENT. THE MISSION OF PROJECT IS TO DESIGN A ROOFED PATH TO PROTECT VISITORS FROM BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS. AN IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT WHEN DESIGNING THE ROOFED PATH INTO CHI MINH PRESIDENT MAUSOLEUM IS THE HARMONY WITH THE OVERALL LANDSCAPE. ANOTHER ISSUE IS HOW TO UTILIZE THE ROOFED PATH AT NIGHT? WE THINK THAT THE PATH SHOULD BE SIMPLE AND CLEAR IN FORM LIKE THE STYLE OF THE MAUSOLEUM. IN ADDITION, THE PATH SHOULD BE FLEXIBLE AND MULTI-FUNCTIONING.
PROPOSING FOR 3RD PART BATH
PROPOSING FOR REMAIN PART BATH
THE PATH HAS 4 PARTS. WE PAY ATTENTION TO THE THIRD PART IN FRONT OF THE MAUSOLEUM. THIS PART IS FORMED FROM SQUARE FRAMES IN THE WAY THAT REPRESENTS THE PRESIDENT ‘S SIMPLE LIFE. AT NIGHT, THESE FRAMES CONVERT INTO 6 MODULES AND ALIGN SYMMETRICALLY ALONG THE MAUSOLEUM. THESE MODULES CAN BE LIT UP AND TELL HISTORICAL STORIES. THIS WAY, THE PATH CAN BE UTILIZED ALL DAY AND CONTRIBUTE TO OVERALL LANDSCAPE.

COVERING ABOUT 40 THOUSAND HECTARES OF PLANTED AND NATURAL MANGROVES, CAN GIO MANGROVE BIOSPHERE RESERVE IS REGARDED AS THE “GREEN LUNGS” OF HO CHI MINH CITY. TO COMMEMORATE “RUNG SAC BASE” AND DEVELOP ECO-TOURISM WHICH WAS ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE, THE GOVERMENT PLAN TO EXPAND AND RENOVATE THE EXISTING NATURAL PARK. THE GATE IS A PART OF THIS PLAN. I THINK THAT THE GATE SHOULD SATISFY 2 REQUIREMENTS:
1.EMERGE:
IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE A LANDMARK THAT RISES UP FROM THE IMMENSE MANGROVE FOREST TO MARK THE LOCATION AND ATTRACT VISITORS’ ATTENTION EVEN FROM AFAR.
2.HIDE:
THE GATE SHOULD HIDE IN THE FOREST TO RESPECT THE BEAUTY OF NATURE. FROM THIS THOUGHT, I DESIGN THE GATE WITH RED VERTICAL LINES THAT SYMBOLIZE THE MANGROVE ROOT STRONGLY RISING UP TO THE SKY.
above PLAY the
FIELD
THIS SITE IS A PART OF THE NEW URBAN CENTER OF BINH CHANH DISTRICT. THEIR FUNCTIONS INCLUDE SPORT CENTER, NATURAL PARK AND CULTURAL CENTER. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS SITE IS A WETLAND WITH EXISTING FIELDS, GULLYS, SMALL PONDS AND NIPAS. SO, AN IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE WHEN LANDSCAPING IS RESPECTING NATURE AND MINIMIZING IMPACTS TO THE SOIL. MY PROPOSAL FOCUSES ON PRESERVING NATURE, LINKING WATERBODIES BY A UNITED CANAL SYSTEM, ARRANGING PLAYGROUNDS INSIDE THE FIELD AND CREATING UNLEVELED WOODEN WALKWAYS. THE CONCEPT ALSO ENCOURAGES HUMAN ACTIVITIES BY INTEGRATING VARIOUS SPACES INTO AN ECOLOGICAL PARK AND LINKING THEM BY A WALKWAY NETWORK. TO ME, NATURAL LANDSCAPE IS THE BACKGROUND FOR HUMAN ACTIVITIES. HUMAN ACTIVITIES HAVE A STRONG IMPACT ON SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT.

BA SON PORT IS A ONLY PORT IN THE CENTER OF HO CHI MINH CITY. TODAY, HO CHO MINH CITY IS DEVERLOPING AND THE PORT IS MOVED AWAY FROM THE CENTER TO RE-ESTABLISH A NEW FLOATING MARKET. THIS MARKET IS A GATHERING PLACE FOR TRADING FARM PRODUCE. IT IS ALSO A HISTORICAL LANDMARK FOR TOURISTS. THE CONCEPT IS TO REUSE THE ROOF FORM OF BA SON FACTORY PORT, THE LARGE SPACE WITH STEEL AND GABLED ROOF. THE CONCEPT ALSO INTEGRATES THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE WITH WATER AS THE BACKGROUND FOR HUMAN ACTIVITIES. IT IS NOT ONLY A MARKET BUT ALSO A PLACE TO HOME THE SPECIAL IMAGE OF THE MEKONG DELTA CULTURE.

CONTEXT STRATEGIES 1. TRAFFIC:
ROADS ARE POOR AND OLD, ESPECIALLY IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO ACCESS THE RIVERBANK AND THE BEACH. THERE IS A LACK OF SIDEWALKS FOR PEDESTRIANS.
2. LAND USE:
MOST OF THE GOVERMENT AND SCHOOL BUILDINGS ARE LOCATED NEAR NGUYEN TAT THANH STREET AND THE BEACH, SO IT DOES NOT TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE LAND’S ECONOMICAL VALUE. THE GOVERMENT PLANS TO MOVE THEM TO THEIR NEW SITE, SO THE PROBLEM IS HOW TO REDEVELOP EFFECTIVELY.
3. LANDSCAPE:
THIS SITE IS BORDERED BY RIVER AND SEA WITH HIGH LANDSCAPE POTENTIAL. IN ADDITION, THE NATIVE SOCIAL CHARACTERISTICS ARE FISHING VILLAGE WITH ITS UNIQUE CULTURE. HOW TO BRING OUT THESE LOCAL FEATURES?
IN 2030, PHAN THIET WILL BE THE MODERN TOURISTS’ DESTINATION WITH HIGH LIVING STANDARDS, CLEAN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, AND LOCAL HERITAGE. 1.TRAFFIC:
ENHANCING PEDESTRIAN’S ABILITY OF TRANSPORTATION AND ACCESSIBILITY TO THE RIVER AND BEACH.
2. LAND USE:
APPROPRIATE LAND USE TO PROMOTE ECONOMY AND RAISE LIVING STANDARDS.
3. LANDSCAPE :
THE CITY HAS LOCAL CHARACTERS OF LANDSCAPE AND CULTURE
