Website The paranormal, ghosts and hauntings - for many years people have tried to prove the existence of paranormal activities. At Haunted Southampton we have a wide range of equipment that you can use during an investigation . If you are new or have not tried such an event then maybe this publication can help break down some of the jargon used or explain why we undertake these experiments and why we use the equipment we bring along.

There is a plethora of paranormal researchers who have formulated various experiments using a variety of scientific equipment to try and prove the existence of ghosts. From analyzing cold spots and barometer pressure changes through to trying to record conversations with ghosts, a Haunted Southampton investigation covers an array of such experiments that you can undertake. Using some of the latest technology such as thermal imagery and night vision camcorders that film in total darkness, our guests are able to take part in investigations and really contribute towards providing venue owners with an explanation of unexplained activity.

Ghost “hunt” V’s Paranormal Investigation There are two fundamental differences in what is termed a themed ghost hunt and a paranormal investigation. A ghost hunt is a basic visit to a site with the intention to witness a form of ghost and capture it upon film or audio equipment. At Haunted Southampton we feel that an in-depth paranormal investigation offers more; we conduct interviews with venue owners, undertake extensive research , document reports and enable the people who attend our events to be the “paranormal investigator”. People ask us what the best piece of equipment might be to bring along on an event and we tell them - “An open mind.”

Thermal Image cameras The use of thermal image cameras takes paranormal investigations to another level. The Fluke camera you can use comes with the latest infra red technology. It can store over 3000 images and is simple to use.

What the thermal image camera offers is an unique ability to scan an area for any potential changes in heat that are often associated with the presence of paranormal activity.

Any serious paranormal investigator needs real time analysis of an area quickly. One of the best ways to monitor, capture and analyze potential paranormal activity is using a thermal image camera.

The best use of the camera is by scanning an area slowly - the one click option for taking stills is easy to use. The camera is lightweight and hand held, robust and can offer an instant assessment of any area or person involved.

Sony offers the best quality filming, especially for the environments we undertake our investigations in.

Sony Night Vision Camcorders

Using the highest quality night vision on the market, and with an ability to film in complete darkness the hand held range we use offers the ability to record and monitor in real time, any experiments that are conducted during the event.

The six Sony camcorders that you can use during our events enable us to capture any potential activity occurring . The best use of night vision is to resist the temptation to zoom in. This can delay the sensors filming capacity for a few seconds and we don’t want to miss those vital moments of footage.

EMF Meters.

A common train of thought is that ghosts emit an electro magnetic field. To test this theory you can use a variety of electro magnetic field detectors to analyze your own and the surrounding environment.

Hand held and very portable - the EMF Meter is a very common tool for most paranormal investigators.

EMF Meters come in a variety of models and we use five of these during our events for you to use.

EVP Capturing the voices of ghosts is an experiment lots of paranormal investigators like to do. One way to do this is by using high quality digital voice recorders that can record in MP3 / MP4 formats.

We use Olympus digital recorders because of the high quality recording facility and ease of use.

The experiments you can partake in can be quickly played back.

Quick, real time investigation to establish if any activity has been captured.

Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) . Not only can you set up various forms of experiments with just the voice recorder but it also can be used to record other experiments during the night.

Thermometers and Hygrometers

During any investigation we spread around the location small data loggers that analyze both the temperature and the humidity. The devices we use can record for a 24 hour period.

These small devices enable you to easily monitor any changes within the environment - you are looking for unexplainable fluctuations in both temperature and humidity. Such changes may indicate that a form of paranormal activity could be occurring in a room.

Digital Weather Stations

Weather stations offer a one stop analysis of various forms of data. From moon phases, barometer readings and an ability to record data remotely.

Any changes in the data being recorded could be of interest to the paranormal investigator. The weather station we use also acts as a data logger. We can easily analyze the environment over a 24 hour period and match any changes to activity caught on camera, voice recorder and thermal imager. Real time data recordings offers a more in-depth paranormal investigation.

Olympus digital voice recorders can record up to 70 hours. Easily transferred via USB to a PC for easy and quick analysis. We use two software programmes for the purposes of enhancing data.

Some Previous Locations

The equipment highlighted in this article is just a small selection of what we bring along to an investigation. Other forms of paranormal detection equipment includes remote locked off cameras, lasers and various sound equipment , all brought together to offer as many options and experiments as we can squeeze into an investigation.

The Haunted Southampton team has an excellent knowledge on how to get the best out of the equipment we use - even if you have never tried or taken part in such an event before there is always someone on hand to help guide you though.

But it’s not just our equipment, many people come along with their own cameras, camcorders and ideas: we really encourage this and are open to any suggestions for experiments. Bringing your own cameras lets you share the experience: we really enjoy seeing your pictures posted upon our Facebook page along with any other feedback you wish to offer.

The paranormal can be fun -there is nothing we enjoy more having a coffee with our guests during the night discussing what happened during each experiment and looking forward to trying another piece of equipment - it’s your night , your investigation.

We hope this short introduction to some of the equipment we use has wetted your appetite to join us to investigate some alleged haunted locations. Our concept since 2009 has always been the same - to follow reports of paranormal activity and try to establish if indeed a location is haunted.

A team of five experienced people forms Haunted Southampton. We contract in several Psychic Mediums to offer a different insight , as none of the team make any claims to have any psychic abilities. Our interest is primarily in the scientific approach . By you undertaking the experiments and documenting the results we are able to compile a detailed report for the venue owners, giving a balanced opinion to whether indeed a location is haunted.

With any location we investigate - months of preparation has gone on behind the scenes - interviewing the venue owners, undertaking extensive research and ensuring that the venue is safe for you to explore. The reason why we research a location is to match any data recorded upon the night to actual names , events and occurrences within that location. At the end of the investigation, we have a debrief to discuss what activity has been recorded and hopefully match that to the interviews and research we have previously undertaken.

What you see, feel and hear upon the investigation is your own experiences - nothing is staged, no actors are used - your role on the night is to establish with us just how haunted or reputable the claims are of the paranormal activity reported at the location.
