March 5, 2019 Dear Athlete, Welcome to the 6th Annual Malibu GRANFONDO and the first Malibu Invitational by Haute Route. As hundreds of cyclists from 12 countries converge on Westlake Village, California, we are reminded of cycling’s enduring power to bring people together for fun, camaraderie, and competition. Malibu GRANFONDO founder and founder of Serious Cycling, Scott Johnson, built a tremendous event to showcase the incredible climbs and stunning scenery of the Santa Monica Mountains. We are proud to build on the solid foundation Scott created and bring some exciting new features to the event. Traditionally a two-day event, this year is the first riders can choose to ride a one-day gran fondo on Saturday. This option has been very popular, which helped drive registrations for the weekend to an all-time high. The Malibu Invitational by Haute Route is the other major addition for 2019. This 3-day gran fondo-style stage event features a long road stage on Friday, the Malibu GRANFONDO for Stage 2, and a time trial on Sunday. While there are some new features for 2019, one thing that has not changed is our commitment to service and support. Our Event Director, Kathy McCormick, has assembled an army of more than 100 volunteers, mechanics, soigneurs, course marshals, and sag drivers so the only thing you need to think about is riding your bike! There are a lot of people I want to thank for supporting this event, and many are highlighted in this Road Book. I’d like to say a special thanks to our hosts, the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village and Pedalers Fork, and our honored guests: Fränk Schleck, Alison Tetrick, and Michelin Star Chef Matthew Accarrino. From everyone at the Malibu GRANFONDO, Gran Fondo National Series, and Haute Route, we wish you a safe and exhilarating weekend of sunny Southern California cycling! Alain Lambert Executive Chairman, Haute Route North America

ATHLETE ITINERARY Special Considerations for the Malibu GRANFONDO on Saturday, March 16, 2019 • • • • •
• •
•
• • • • • • •
While there are timed sections, the event is not a race and it rolls rain or shine. Athletes must pick up timing chip at the start and return the chip after crossing the finish line. Keep ID card provided with you the entire weekend & allows access based on your registration. Bib number is to be affixed to the LEFT SIDE of the jersey only. There are three timing segments on the Classico course and two timing segments on the Medio course. Timing segments will be combined to determine age group category and overall winners. Awards categories can be viewed on the FAQ page of our website. There is a 10:30am cutoff at mile 19 at Potrero and Lewis Road. Any athlete who reaches this point after the cutoff will be diverted on to the Medio course. There is a 2:00pm cutoff at mile 74 at the base of Latigo Canyon, just before the final timing segment and KOM/QOM climb. If you reach the base of Latigo after 2:00pm you will not receive an official time but may continue on the course back to the finish unsupported. Rest stop hours have taken into consideration the varied paces of our riders. Athletes are encouraged to enjoy the experience along the Malibu GRANFONDO route(s), while allowing enough time to return to finish in time for lunch. Route(s), timing segments, and rest stop locations can be viewed HERE. Rest stop hours are listed on the FAQ page of our website. Lunch at the Westlake Village Studios begins at 1:00pm and ends promptly at 4:00pm. Awards Ceremony will be held at 3:00pm SAG support vehicles will be available throughout the day. Please be aware of Rest Stop hours and understand that if you arrive outside these hours, support may not be available. (See pages 12-17) All athletes must use bike lanes or ride as far to the right as is safe. Athletes are expected to follow all rules of the road. All roads are open to vehicular traffic. Course will be marked with bright blue route arrows and directional signage. Use caution as directed.

ABOUT MALIBU GRANFONDO The heart and soul of the Malibu GRANFONDO is the community of cyclists, sponsors and partners that dedicate time, energy, and resources to help organize, execute and support our event. We are avid cyclists who take pride in showcasing the roads we ride and catering to athletes that participate in our event. From the California Coastline to National Parks, our event courses traverse a balanced mix of rolling terrain, agricultural farmland, fast and scenic coastline, and epic climbs in the Santa Monica Mountains. We work with local businesses to showcase the cycling lifestyle of Southern California and offer participants a celebration of cycling, amazing food and breathtaking scenery. Whether riding one day or all three, athletes will receive pro-level service and support.
OUR COMMUNITY What makes our area so special for cyclists? The Santa Monica Mountains! A relatively rare east-west oriented mountain range, they run some 40 miles from the Hollywood Hills all the way to Point Mugu in Ventura County where they run into the ocean. They separate the San Fernando Valley from much the rest of the Los Angeles Metropolis. Pacific Coast Highway parallels the mountains to the south, giving riders easy sea-level access to nearly every climb, while Mulholland Highway parallels PCH for much of its distance before turning south and running to the coast itself.
20
Malibu boasts a baker’s dozen of climbs that gain more than 1400 feet in elevation over four miles or more. They all average between four and seven percent gradient with one exception. The vast majority of the roads interconnect, allowing riders to constantly create new circuits each ride.
Latigo Canyon a hallmark of Southern California Climbs
Latigo Canyon Climbing from the ocean up a well-maintained road to a rocky peak, complete with incredible views, is a dream for many cyclists. For the those who love to climb, the ascent up Latigo Canyon Road is, perhaps, the most enjoyable in the region. This classic Malibu climb coils like a kingsnake gliding through coastal brush as it traces a route up and over the sandstone bluffs that hug the Pacific coast, and connects PCH in Malibu to Mulholland Highway in Westlake Village. The climb up Latigo Canyon is variable, with short periods of steep switchbacks, long low-grade sections and slight descents. The entire road is just under 10 miles long, but the first summit is ~7 miles from PCH, after which there is a descent and second climb to the final summit before descending to Kanan Road. Altogether the climb is 2200 feet, but because the route is so twisted and variable it doesn't have a super high suffer factor. You are constantly thinking about what is around the next corner instead of any ache in the legs. The route is full of epic sandstone outcrops and ocean views around each corner.
“It’s in Malibu, at the western end of the Santa Monicas that the challenge of the terrain, good pavement, consistently good weather and light traffic come together to create a road bike playground that can be enjoyed by anyone most days of the year.“
