splendid Mercantour national park. The Col de Cayolle culminates at 2326m and is part of the Route des Grandes Alpes. Proven time and again by the Tour de France, Pra Loup is a go-to destination for amateur cyclists in the Alps. The big names back in the day were Van Impe, Thévenet and Merck. On the 15th stage in 1975 Merckx seemed to be on his way to another win in the yellow jersey, but fate played its part. Thévenet took the lead and never relinquished it to take the win in Paris. After this stage Eddy Merckx would never wear the yellow jersey again – this stage would remain anchored in Tour history. The town of Pra Loup has commemorated Thevenet’s win with a statue on the ascent erected 40 years later in 2015.

Seven high mountain cols allow access into the Ubaye valley, each summited multiple times by the Tour de France over the years. Each different in their own way, the cols allow riders to traverse the mountains whilst enjoying beautiful views over the countryside and breathing in fresh air. Some riders have made a challenge out of riding all 7 cols. The Col de Cayolle has been named by Le Cycle as one of the 30 most beautiful climbs in Europe. The road up to Cayolle has remained unchanged through the years, with cyclists able to cut there way through the mountainside on the winding roads. The road rises along the mountainside by the Bachelard and Bayasse gorges before opening up to 9km of hairpin bends in the

introducing serre chevalier

ith a privileged climate in a sun soaked valley in the heart of the Hautes Alpes, Serre Chevalier Briançon is a brilliant playground for outdoor sports.

Come winter, the ski resort of Serre Chevalier is renowned for its snow conditions, and its 410 hectares of varied ski terrain that make it one of the biggest domains in the Alps.

The valley rises above three alpine villages (Le Monêtier les Bains, Villeneuve La Salle les Alpes and Chantemerle Saint Chaffrey) and the city of Briançon who’s fortifications are classed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Surrounded by mythical cols amongst the most famous in cycling – Col de l’Izoard, Col du Galibier, Col du Granon – the valley is also home to several 3000m summits. Serre Chevalier was chosen to host not only the Tour de France, but also the Etape du Tour in 2017 and it will play host to a number of cyclotourism events throughout the summer.

With a unique mix of outdoor sports, well being facilities and culture there is something for everyone. In the summer it is a small corner of paradise for amateur sports with a myriad of possible activities taking place in fresh mountain air with a Mediterranean climate just 15km from the Italian border.
