Dear Rider, Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Haute Route Asheville. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything is in place so you have an experience of a lifetime during this three-day cycling event. Part of that process is the publication of this Roadbook. Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive guide outlining all the information you will need during the event, both on and off the bike. You will receive a hard copy of the Riders’ Roadbook at registration day in Asheville. Inside you will find details on the registration process and accommodations at the Official Riders’ Hotel, as well as the host venues and technical stage information, including details of the mechanical, massage, and medical support provided. We also outline how you and your supporters can follow the event live through our social media channels and the best way to access stage results. Between now and the event, you can reach the team directly by emailing contact.northamerica@ hauteroute.org or calling +1 719-287-8489. Wishing you the very best of luck with your final preparations! ABOUT THE

Blue Ridge Parkway The Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) is a 469-mile road that connects Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it is arguably the most iconic scenic drive in the United States. Proposed in the 1930s and not completed until the 1970s, the Parkway winds its ways along some of the highest ridgelines east of the Mississippi River. Outside of Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway skirts Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet above sea level. Stage 1 of Haute Route Asheville travels 33 miles of the BRP, including 4,000 feet of climbing and the highest point of the day at nearly 5,700 feet above sea level. In May, the wildflowers are in full bloom, and the clear, clean mountain air stays a bit cooler than in the valleys below.

ABOUT THE

French Broad River Stage 2 of the Haute Route Asheville begins and ends with a ride along the French Broad River. The river itself is ancient; geologists believe it is the third oldest river in the world, behind the Nile and the New River, which also flows into North Carolina. Once so polluted it was described in 1955 by author Wilma Dykman as “too thick to drink and too thin to plow,” the river has been restored to pristine condition and attracts countless people for rafting, tubing, kayaking, and other water sports. And the dilapidated factories and warehouses along the river have been transformed into the vibrant River Arts District (RAD). The clarity of the French Broad River also attracted breweries! Two of the largest U.S. craft breweries, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium, operate in Asheville because of the French Broad River. There are so many great breweries in Asheville that the city has been featured on “Best Cities for Beer Lovers” lists in Forbes, Condé Nast Traveler, and Smart Asset.

ABOUT

Downtown Asheville Every mountain town has its signature hill climb, and in Asheville it’s Town Mountain. Pros, amateurs, and enthusiasts have all tested themselves on this 5-plus mile ascent that climbs just a bit more than 1,200 vertical feet (367m). The summit features a stunning view of downtown Asheville, named one of the Best U.S. Small Cities by National Geographic Traveler in 2018. The renaissance of Asheville was fueled by art, food, and beer. While revitalization efforts in other North Carolina towns in the 1980s and 1990s meant tearing down buildings and replacing with new construction, Asheville retained its character by protecting its architecture. Artists renovated the factories and warehouses by the river to create a thriving arts district, and craft breweries were attracted by the clean water of the French Broad River. The region’s farmers markets and festivals drew imaginative chefs, who helped establish Asheville as one of the top culinary destinations in the southern United States. After surveying downtown Asheville from atop Town Mountain, cruise back to the Renaissance Asheville Hotel for the Closing Ceremony and then head out on the town to cap off your Haute Route experience.
