INTRODUCING
Béarn Pyrénées In the Béarn Pyrénées, the cols are all part of the legend for cycling enthusiasts and professionals alike. Most cyclo-sportive addicts will readily tell you that the cols in the Béarn Pyrénées each have that little something that makes them extra-special. A rite of passage, a col is synonymous with pushing past one’s limits and self-fulfilment.

INTRODUCING
Pau It is no surprise that the Haute Route is coming to Pau because it is a must if you are planning to ride the mythical Pyrenean cols. Pau is also a sports, nature and wildlife destination of choice due to its geographical and climatic advantages, its facilities and its English heritage going back to the 19th century. In Pau and its surroundings, thrill-seekers or walkers can either indulge in rafting or kayaking in the white water stadium or play golf on the green, the oldest in Europe. Then there are the walks by the River Gave in our urban natural park, in the forest of Bastard or in the many public parks and gardens of the city. In addition to these outdoor sports, our city hosts big events and welcomes elite athletes during their training who come to enjoy not just the facilities in Pau but the etiquette of the southwest, friendliness and good food. Apart from Tony Estanguet, born and bred in Pau and a triple Olympic gold medallist in canoeing, the French centre of excellence

is located here and many international teams train here. The French national basketball team spends every summer at the House of Sports to prepare for international competitions. The historical and modern Grand Prix de Pau – a strong element of our heritage – takes over the city in May. This is not to forget the horses that are honoured each Autumn with the Étoiles de Pau, a three-day Event and one of six annual CCI four-star events in the world. Then there is the rugby, a huge sport in our region. Since 2013, the city of Pau has engaged in the transformation of the Protective Zone of Heritage and Urban Landscape (ZPPAUP), part of an Enhanced Area of Architecture and Heritage (AVAP), to ensure compatibility between the interests of conservation and sustainable development. Labelled City of Art and History since 2012 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the city is also engaged in a process of adding value throughout the year with many events revealing Pau’s richness and diversity.

INTRODUCING
Valleys of Gavarnie The cycling capital of the Pyrenees. Sitting in the heart of the Pyrenees, surrounded by the cols engrained in the history of the Tour de France, the Valleys of Gavarnie are an ideal hub for cycling enthusiasts. From the ‘Hors Categorie’ ascent up the Hautacam, to the Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden or Aubisque and Soulour and picturesque roads that wind through charming little villages; cycling enthusiasts could not choose a better location to train and race. The concentration of renowned cycling roads around the valleys is truly what makes us unique. You can feasibly ride the Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden and even the Aubisque and Hautacam in the same day. On top of this, numerous lesser-known cols can also offer the opportunity to discover some new roads and climbs that are equally as beautiful and challenging. The col des Tentes at Gavarnie sits in the heart of a UNESCO world heritage site and near the French/Spanish border at over 3000m. Ascending the winding road up to the Pont d’Espagne à Cauterets, you can let yourself be blown away by the splendour of the waterfalls and dense
28 28
pine tree forests. This easily rivals the grandeur of the ascent up the Tourmalet. During the second, the third and the fourth stages of this year’s Haute Route, riders will get to discover some of the hidden gems in the region. These include the col de Couraduque in the Azun valley which is quite a remarkable ascent that averages a tough 8% gradient. During the winter the Couraduque plays host to the largest Nordic skiing domain of the Pyrenees and is a great area for hiking, VTT and paragliding throughout the summer like many spots in the Valleys of Gavarnie. Accommodation options in the area stretch from hotels to camping sites, rental homes and holiday resorts. All adhere to the ‘Cyclo Altamonta’ charter and as such are welcoming for all cyclists wishing to keep their bikes in their rooms or secured bike sheds. Moreover, facilities are in place for cleaning and servicing bikes and the nutritional value of meals on offer is adapted to cyclists needs. All things considered, Argeles-Gazost is ideally situated to welcome you, our cycling friends, in the heartland of French cycling. www.valleesdegavarnie.com

INTRODUCING
Saint-Lary Soulan Saint-Lary, the heart of pyrenean cycling! From the spa therapy centre, “Sensoria,” with its fun area, to the museum of the Maison du Parc National, and the “House of the Bear,” designed for families, there is no shortage of activities and entertainment for families! Natural areas, museums, a bike park, lots of adventure trails, visits to farms and local producers... ideas for young and old alike! Of course, this special consideration for families is also reflected in price deals and promotional offers reserved for them. If cycling is your thing, it's here you'll find happiness at last! The village, scene of the finishing line of the mountain stages to Pla d'Adet and now to the Col du Portet in the

legendary Tour de France, is the starting point for lots of wonderful cycling trips. The great Pyrenean passes are all open to two wheelers: the Col du Portet, Col d'Azet, Hourquette d'Ancizan, Peyresourde, Aspin and Tourmalet surrounding the Aure valley. Besides the Tour de France, which has stopped over more than a dozen times in Saint-Lary Soulan since 1974 and the victory of Poulidor at the Pla d'Adet, lots of cycling events call in here, including the Haute Route Pyrénées and the Pyrenéenne. In the village you will find all the facilities you expect - spa, gym, etc., while accommodation always has a secure lock up for bikes and equipment and offer menus tailored to athletes. The diversity things to do in the village is a big plus for people accompanying the cyclists, so they can fully enjoy their stay in the Aure valley!

The Louron Valley is an area of midrange mountains with rounded reliefs and peaks. It is easily accessible and an ideal place to take a break from the rest of the world and to take a walk with the family. The valley is easily traversed with very accessible paths brushing along the shores of GénosLoudenvielle Lake, taking you on a detour to one of its villages, typically built, culturally important and still very much involved in pastoral activity. After all that effort, time for relaxation! Come and discover the largest relaxation thermal water complex in the French Pyrenees. With its four different zones and a total surface area of 4,000m², Balnéa invites you to a place different from all others. The centre is aimed at those who like to combine a way of life with fitness and healthy eating but also those that respect the environment and a rich multicultural diversity. It's a great place to recharge your batteries, a place surrounded by mountains where you can regenerate completely.
