INTRODUCING
Marin County Stage 2 starts with a ride across the famed Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County where participants will roll through a microcosm of spectacular Northern California geography. Once riders leave Sausalito, the terrain changes quickly from urban to rural. From rugged coastlines to quiet marshlands, bucolic dairy country to dark and cool redwood forests, Marin has it all. Mt. Tamalpais (known locally as Mt. Tam) towers over the region and is considered one of the birthplaces of mountain biking. In the 1970s, Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, and others turned old cruisers into downhill bikes that they rode down the dirt tracks that descend Mt. Tam’s flanks. Haute Route San Francisco climbs part of this iconic mountain on Panoramic Highway both outbound and inbound.

INTRODUCING
Angel Island Smack in the middle of San Francisco Bay sits Angel Island, a decommissioned military installation that has become a popular California State Park for day trips. Sea lions and otters frolic in the island’s coves while spring wildflowers blanket the slopes of its main peak, Mt. Livermore, that tops out at 788 feet (240m). The undulating and technical road around the island offers unparalleled views of San Francisco, Marin County, Berkeley/ Oakland, and the Bay. The Haute Route Time Trial is the first sanctioned road cycling event ever in the island’s history, and it may be one of the West Coast’s most scenic racecourses ever. After you wrap up your time trial, make sure to stop and take in the pure, natural setting that has remained almost unchanged for hundreds of years.
