EDITOR’S MESSAGE Dear Readers, Welcome to the Spring 2016 Issue of Haute Dubai Magazine. Back in November 2015, Jeff Bezos and his private space flight company Blue Origin blew us all away by completing the first ever vertical landing of a rocket. There’s no question that the man is a visionary. We begin this issue by profiling the e-commerce mogul turned rocket builder and taking a closer look at his vision to make space travel more affordable. In Style, we showcase some of the best looks from Paris’ Spring Haute Couture shows, alongside the best timepieces from SIHH 2016. I also catch up with the Co-founder of Momentum and vintage watch aficionado, Tariq Malik, to talk about vintage timepieces and find out what makes them special. In the Travel pages, we bring you our round-up of best luxury resorts to stay in when in Bali. Whether you are longing for a personal butler or a private pool, you can rest assured that a stay at any of these resorts is nothing short of opulent. Lastly, we are delighted to announce that Haute Dubai Magazine is one of the official media partners of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2016 Middle East & Africa, which will honour the best names in luxury on 26 May 2016 at the Ritz-Carlton Dubai. E-commerce mogul Jeff Bezos wants to take you to space
Conquering the internet, reinventing the book and becoming one of the world’s richest men are enough for the most ambitious of us, but to Jeff Bezos these great accomplishments were just the stepping stones for something bigger… the space race!
Born in 1964 to teenage parents, Bezos had an itinerant childhood that saw him grow up in several cities across the United States. His energy for innovation is said to have kept his family busy as he was growing up, turning his parents’ garage into a laboratory and rigging electrical contraptions around his house. As a teenager, Bezos wanted to get involved in space – not as an astronaut, but an entrepreneur. It seemed a heady dream for a teenager in the 1970s, but Bezos interest did not wane as he got older. First, though, he would need to make a lot of money.

Seattle, writing up the Amazon business plan on the way. From humble beginnings in his garage, and with an initial plan to sell books over the Internet, Bezos expanded his ebusiness into an empire selling everything from toasters to clothing to car parts. In 2000, shortly after he was named Time’s Person of the Year for his work on e-commerce, Bezos turned his attention to his early passion, space travel. He founded Blue Origin, a Seattle-based aerospace company that develops technologies to offer space travel to paying customers. Reportedly, Bezos kept his plans very quiet for years. Most of the company’s information came out through mandatory

After graduating summa cum laude from Princeton in 1986, Bezos chose the nascent field of computer science to make his fortune, getting his start working for several companies in the field. In 1994, Bezos founded Amazon. com after making a cross-country drive from New York to

recovery and reuse back at the launch site in West Texas. A couple of months after making history with the Shepard’s vertical landing, Jeff Bezos wrote in a blog post on Blue Origin’s website commenting on the landing: “Though wings and parachutes have their adherents and their advantages, I’m a huge fan of rocket-powered vertical landing. Why? Because – to achieve our vision of millions of people living and working in space – we will need to build very large rocket boosters. And the vertical landing architecture scales extraordinarily well.” The blog post also read: “We’re already more than three years into development of our first orbital vehicle. Though it will be the small vehicle in our orbital family, it’s still many times larger than New Shepard. I hope to share details about this first orbital vehicle this year.” Blue Origin is already inviting people who have an interest in travelling to space to sign up for information on their website. In addition, the company is also working with a number of customers interested in taking payloads into space for research purposes. If all of its current set of flight tests are successful, the company intends to begin its first commercial flights next year.
disclosures to the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA as Bezos sought regulatory approvals and funding. In a 2011 interview, Bezos indicated that he founded the space company to help enable “anybody to go into space” and stated that the company was committed to decreasing the cost and increasing the safety of spaceflight. Since that time, Bezos has indeed come a long way closer to his vision. Just last November, Blue Origin’s New Shepard space vehicle – a ship reportedly named after Alan Shepard, the first American to fly in space in 1961 – successfully flew to the edge of space, reaching its planned test altitude of 100.5 kilometres before executing an historic vertical landing for

that he has with his ingredients and flavours. “The focus behind our cuisine is the quality of the ingredients. Everything on the plate has a purpose and provides an original flavor, which results in an exciting and soothing taste that is both healthy and delicious. Thus the essence of ‘Feel Good Food’ is to leave my guests feeling good both mentally and physically,” explains Chef Reger. “By making ethical choices when selecting our ingredients, the result is not only in the freshest and best flavours, but also why ‘Feel Good Food’ is cuisine that is good for the body and the soul.” The food concept is deeply rooted in his connection to his ingredients, as each has been hand selected and perfectly paired to produce the richest flavours, freshest tastes and healthiest outcome. The unconventional dishes include Beet and Barley risotto, Chilean seabass with yuzu-glazed turnips or slow-cooked beef short ribs with celeriac puree. Chef Reger explains that he creates food that he enjoys and that he has a relationship with, “When you order a steak for example, it is not just a steak. It is an entire meal where each aspect has been included purposefully, and each flavour is made with intent, giving dishes delicate details and an array of complimenting flavours.” Most ingredients are sourced from organic and sustainable companies that value fair trade and quality over all when possible. This creates a significant relationship between the chef, the source, the ingredients, and the final dish. In line with Lexus’ philosophy surrounding immaculate craftsmanship, every ingredient featured in the menu is carefully handpicked, including the organic coffee and wine selection. The bespoke menu created for Intersect By Lexus is diverse but remains cohesive, giving guests a vibrant culinary experience that is full of creativity and authenticity. Chef Thomas stays away from using heavy or unhealthy ingredients like cream or sugar and focusing more on creating the same rich flavors using nutritious ingredients like nuts and herbs. The aim of ‘Feel Good Food’ is to leave guests with delicious flavors lingering on their lips, but also to leave them feeling light and energized with the ability to tackle the rest of the day. His use of traditional cooking techniques with a modern twist, has given him the ability to get the most out of his ingredients, and create unique dishes while maintaining consistency in the flavours. The food leaves guests with the same dynamic experience every time they walk in the door, keeping them coming back for more.

Gallery Guru
Stéphane Custot, founder of Custot Gallery gives us an insight on his new Dubai art space.
Set to open its doors this March, Custot Gallery Dubai is one of the latest additions to emirate’s cultural land-
scape. In keeping with the gallery’s programme focused on post-war masterworks and contemporary art, the open-
ing exhibition invites us on a journey that reflects Stéphane Custot’s personal taste as a respected connoisseur with
25 years of experience in Paris and London. The selection for the inaugural exhibition will embody the two cornerstones of the gallery, contemporary fine arts and large-scale sculpture.

After a rich career in Paris and in London, why did you choose to focus on the Middle East by opening Custot Gallery Dubai? Situated halfway between Asia and North America,
Dubai represents a perfect market opening for interna-
tional art. Dubai already plays host to an established and
respected art fair, Art Dubai, which attracts visitors from all over the world. The gradual establishment of major mu-
seums and galleries in Dubai and the wider Middle East region will undoubtedly turn this part of the world into a
major new global cultural crossroads. My professional experiences in Western art markets drove me to forge a path for myself, both on a personal and a professional level.
Dubai is undergoing tremendous change, affecting
the economy, the tourist industry and the job market, creating an environment with endless possibilities. Besides,
Dubai and the surrounding region are gradually acquiring
major cultural assets, notably in the shape of the Louvre, which have aroused interest and curiosity in equal measure. The new establishments are helping to cement the region’s status as a major new global cultural meeting point. They will attract not just local visitors and art-lovers but
also people from all over the world, further whetting the
54
general appetite for art in the region and helping to drive the expansion in the local commercial art market.
As a gallerist, what art movement inspires you the most? Is there a specific type, style or theme of work you like to represent at your gallery? Initially drawn towards Impressionism and Modern
art, I later developed an interest in Les Nabis, followed by the artists of the 1950s, as demonstrated by the works on
display in my previous gallery in Paris, the Hopkins-Custot
gallery such as Calder, Miro, de Stael, Dubuufet. I then ex-
tended the scope of this expertise to take in Tapiès, Blake, Flanagan and many other international artists in the field of classic contemporary art.
The two cornerstones of Custot Gallery Dubai will
be contemporary fine arts and large scale sculptures by some of the greats of the international contemporary art scene. Through Waddington Custot Galleries in London,
I had the opportunity to work with the estates of artists such as Dubuffet and Flanagan. The gallery’s exhibition strategy is informed by a desire to give people the chance to view creative trends and works which have only been exhibited sporadically in the region until now

What are some of the highlights we can expect from your Dubai debut exhibition, The World Meets Here? The World Meets Here is a group exhibition gath-

large-scale canvases and monumental sculptures. These artists offer a panorama of my taste and my 25-year inter-
national career in the art world. It has taken a long time
and hard work from my team to bring this exhibition together and I am excited to see people’s reactions.
What shape will Custot Gallery Dubai’s exhibition program take? I will establish a program of exhibitions with an
international flavour. The key aim behind the exhibitions
will be to offer a comprehensive overview of the very best art on the international contemporary scene to both a local

High Flyer Azimut Yachts renews the stylistic and technical content of its classic Flybridge Collection with the new Azimut 66
Being an icon isn’t just a question of image, style or
the ability to innovate. It is all this and then just a little bit more. It means being chosen by the market as a must-have
product, one that stays true to its identity over time and continues to amaze with its high performance and sophis-
ticated design
In the category of yachts around 65 feet, the Azimut
Fly range epitomizes all the above, with more than 300 Azimut 62 and 64’s sold around the world since 2002. Now it’s
the turn of the new Azimut 66 to shine. Having made its world premiere during the boot Düsseldorf 2016 in Janu-
ary, this model perfectly incorporates the brand’s finest ingredients, starting from the exterior profile. In keeping with
the finest tradition at Azimut, this model remains graceful and sporty, but offers more volume and surface area.
The obvious starting point is the flybridge, the larg-
est in its category, with three different areas for entertaining. Next comes the four-cabin layout, offering outstanding
liveability, and the new bar area positioned to the fore of the galley, which is ideal for breakfast or for accompanying the pilot during navigation.

The onboard control system is integrated with Ray-
marine instruments that extend its scope of action: from the
engines to the alarms, from regulating the air-conditioning to controlling the bilge pumps, and from tank levels and discharge to machine room ventilation. Customised to pro-
vide interfaces with as many onboard systems as possible,
its functions can be accessed from both helm stations and
remotely by tablet. Other solutions borrowed from home
automation include, on one hand, the possibility of adding more privacy between the galley and the living area, with a
clear glass wall that can be obscured electrically, and on the
other lighting controls, with three pre-set options to create the desired mood on board.
The latest trends from Milan’s Salone del Mobile
furniture show have been taken on board, inspiring the furnishing and décor in a style that reflects an exquisitely
Italian sense of history, heritage and culture. Examples are
the heat-treated oak, elegant figured sycamore and highly prized maple, enhanced with an ultra-glossy varnish in the
finest tradition of Italian handcraftsmanship. The process of decolouration and bath dyeing takes no less than three
weeks, with a result that is extremely strong and aesthetically pleasing. Lighting plays a fundamental role in enhanc-
ing the colour shades of the wood used and the contrasts
between the various materials, with dimmable LED strips hidden behind the curtains. For those who prefer their in-
teriors to be in lighter colour shades, there is also a version made primarily from light decapé oak wood combined with ultra-glossy ebony inlays.
Turning to the living areas, the main deck contains
the salon, which features two large sofa areas, full-height windows and a 55-inch television that can be hidden from view when not in use. The yacht’s glassware is stored in a decorative backlit cabinet in the living area, while the il-
luminated wine cooler dominates the bar area as you pass
through to the lower deck. The galley, designed to make the most of the space available, looks out over the dining area.
The lower deck of the Azimut 66 contains the full
beam master cabin with its large ensuite bathroom, the VIP cabin and two twin-berth cabins with enlarged port-
holes, one with bunk berths, and three bathrooms, all with
separate showers. The berths all have new plant-sourced memory foam mattresses. The suite in the centre of the yacht has full-glass windows with no struts and the vanity
unit can also be used as a chest of drawers to complement
the wardrobes. Owners can choose between Roman blinds

there was a special focus on reducing vibration, involving the introduction of specific damping solutions. Furniture
frames are made entirely from okoume plywood, certified for use at sea. The outdoor upholstery is made from opencell Dry-Fil material for good drainage. The deckhouse windows are treated with reflective material and curved to give continuity to the yacht’s profile.
The lines of the Azimut 66’s hull are the same as
those which have given Azimut 62 and 64 owners so much
pleasure at sea. The deadrise at the centre of the yacht is 20° and 17° at the stern, but the bare facts don’t do justice
to the yacht’s performance, which is defined by the perfect
