Haute Charity Event: Inaugural Women’s Business Expo by Sandy Deli, Mays Street Boutique Owner Justice Cindy Bourland, Sandy Deli of Mays Street
What inspired you to start Mays Street Charity and the Women’s Business Expo events?

As a small business owner with great community support I wanted to give back. Because of my background in healthcare and working with the Wounded Warrior programs at both Brooke Army Medical Center and Fort Hood, I knew I wanted to do something for our veterans. Additionally, I wanted to start a fund to help young women interested in starting their own business. I created Mays Street Charity to secure corporate sponsorships for the Business Expo with a mission to raise funds for both the Action TrackChair for veterans and help women start businesses.

How did you get involved with the Action TrackChair and how much have you raised?
I worked from 2010- 2013 with the Wounded Warriors at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and Fort Hood in Killeen. I found out about the TrackChair from Bill O’Reilly and Fox News. After research I learned that the family of the manufacturer of this chair lives in Round Rock! Melanie and Dan Carlson work directly with the Independence Fund that has collected millions of dollars for the Action TrackChair and our veterans. I met with Melanie and Dan to view and drive the chair. Through the process of setting up Mays Street Charity I was introduced to Tom Ramsey from Celebration of Love who works with the soldiers at Fort Hood. When he heard that I wanted to raise funds to purchase a TrackChair he helped me get the word out and with fund raising. I spoke at an event he held and many folks became interested in supporting my efforts to raise money for the chair. I posted the event on Facebook and sold corporate sponsorships. To date we have raised $7,000 of the $12,000 needed for the chair. MaysStreet Boutique will host another event later this year to raise the remaining funds to purchase a chair and start a fund for young women entrepreneurs.
Regarding the fund for young women interested in starting a business, I have secured office space that will be free to the recipient of the award for 12 months. $5000 will be raised to help this individual start a business. I will work with the local high schools to let students know this program is available and identify a selection process. NAPA FLATS WOOD-FIRED KITCHEN Meet Tom and Dana, owner and managing partner of Napa Flats Wood-Fired Kitchen, and get the inside scoop on their haute new opening. How would you categorize Napa Flats?
I would describe Napa Flats as ‘Californian with an Italian flare in a polished casual environment.’ How has Napa Flats been an innovator in using an all wood-fired kitchen?
We went back to the roots of cooking to rediscover (and reintroduce) the unique flavors that only a wood-fired oven and grill can produce. It has been a rewarding journey. Menu items provide a whole new experience when cooked over open flame. Full bar, wine on tap, local craft

It was custom designed to create just the right amount of heat and retain just the right amount of smoke for flavoring. Our architect covered it with a beautiful green tile, and it is the first thing you notice when you walk in. We’re very proud of our oven; the fire is never allowed to go out. Napa Flats is known for making everything from scratch; tell us about the unique experience you’ve created for this location.
We take ‘made from scratch’ seriously. Literally everything is made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients in our kitchen daily. Our pasta, our hand-tossed dough, our gelato...everything. We only purchase the best and the freshest, and we go to great lengths to train our team in its preparation. What are haute items on the menu? We know one of them is your handmade gelato!
Our gelato is a decadent pleasure and the perfect way to put an exclamation point on a meal. We found an authentic, old-world, Italian gelato machine, and our gelato masters are always coming up with new flavors. For our customers who prefer a gluten-free menu we have delicious options for every taste.

Tell us about the beautiful indoor and outdoor space you’ve created for adults and kids.
We are in a unique location. Interesting people, young families and the laid back culture of Lake Austin and Travis all merge in this area. We hired an Austin architecture firm and challenged them with reflecting that culture in the design. The open-flame oven, parents enjoying wine by the glass, musicians on the patio, kids on the custom built jungle gym. We think they captured it perfectly.

Haute Getaway & Eats: The Sweet Lemon Inn & Kitchen in Georgetown Meet Sweet Lemon Inn & Kitchen owner and chef, Rachel Cummins. She earned her culinary degree at Escoffier after running a cottage bakery business. She shares her journey to becoming the innkeeper, caterer and chef for Sweet Lemon Inn & Kitchen in Georgetown, located just of the beautiful town square. What inspired you and your husband to open Sweet Lemon Inn & Kitchen?
Chef Rachel: When my husband, Kevin, and I were first married (20 years ago this August) we dreamed of owning a Bed & Breakfast with a Cafe. It just wasn’t the right season for that to happen, but we never gave up on the dream. All these years later, it has become a reality. It was the right time for Georgetown and for our family. With a degree in Environmental Resource Management, protecting the environment has always been a priority for me and now I pair that passion with my love for healthy, local, organic, fresh food. I am delighted to be able to provide these options that our fast-growing, savvy community seeks. We source many items from local businesses and farmers, such as Omar Brot, JoLi Farms, Honey Chef and 2 Happy Children. The most exciting part for us is that we’ve aligned our passion and our mission in every area of our business.

What’s haute on your menu and your daily specials?
Some of our best sellers are our A+BLT—an updated classic with the addition of avocado—and our award-winning Thumbprint Cookies with a lemon curd center. We love to use farmer’s market produce in our Daily Specials. A favorite is our Texas Goat Cheese and Rainbow Beet Salad, which is served on a bed of organic arugula. Mighty Swell by Deep Eddy Wine Spritzers are a refreshing reboot of that sentimental favorite and have become very popular. What are your favorite haute spots to shop and unwind in Georgetown?

Haute Salon: Meet Brandi New with Blush This Salon My hustle was driven by my family and my children. I loved doing hair, but the more services my clients requested, the more I wanted to offer! I started doing hair in my house to give me the flexibility to be at home with my son and husband when needed. By the time I was 23, I knew that I wanted to provide a different environment for my clients’, but by then I had two little boys, so flexibility was still very important. If I was going to open my own salon, I wanted to offer my clients’ a comfortable, urban, chic, and ultimately one stop shop for all the mommas’ to get their salon services & last minute shopping done. Between my burning desire to get out of the house and go on field trips with my boys and cook them dinner - I wanted the best of both worlds, and this was how I was going to get it! When I was 24, I called my husband and told him my plans. and this year we celebrate our 5th year in business! I had so many friends helping me along the way and the support was out of this world. Haute Artist: Katy Hardin shares her bold move from attorney to artist I have always loved to paint, draw, and create beautiful things, and have always done so as much as I could in my free time. Ultimately, I chose to go to law school and pursue a traditional career because it seemed like creating a career out of something I loved so much was not realistic. I was an Assistant District Attorney for Randall County when we lived in Canyon, TX, and I loved my work and the thrill of being in the courtroom. What I loved most about practicing law was the opportunity to approach problems in cases from a creative perspective. I think that part of my personality made me a better trial attorney. The downside was that I was working a lot, and was missing out on a lot of precious moments with my children. When a job change for my husband brought us to Austin, I had more free time to pursue my passion for art and all things creative. Turning my dream job into my day job was a win-win, and I’m blessed with a husband who has always been supportive and helped make it work! My grandfather used to call me Katy Marie as a child, and he was the inspiration for the name of my business. He was the most talented, creative, and artistic person I’ve ever known, and I think a lot of my artistic talent comes from him. Starting Katy Marie Studio has given me the opportunity to do the things that make me the happiest for a living, and I also have plenty of time to spend with my kids. Tell us about your pieces and your creative process?
I create abstract art in acrylic on canvas. My pieces have a bold color palette, and are inspired by nature. I paint intuitively and without a plan for a piece when I begin, so I’m always excited to see where the creative process takes me!
