By September, we are definitely ready for crisp, cooler days here in South Walton. Our weather stays warm well past that of many parts of the country, but we are all focused on the comfy fashion and decor Fall brings! WHAT MOVED YOU TO START THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN WALTON

COUNTY?
I moved to South Walton from Northern Virginia in 2012 and my son, Jakob, has autism. There was no active Special Olympics program in Walton County in 2012 so I contacted Special Olympics Florida in Orlando about re-starting a program for the County. Myself and another Special Needs parent (Jennifer Fitzgerald) re-started the Walton County program with the help of our children’s Principal at Emerald Coast Middle School, Charlie Marello. In May of 2013 we started with a Special Olympics Field Day at ECMS for all Special Needs students in Walton County Public Schools. We had 125 students participate that day. Since then the program has grown with continued support of the Walton School District and many local businesses. We now serve over 100 athletes in Walton County. We offer 14 year round sports programs at no cost to the athletes
or their families. We have a full time County Director, Nancy Simpler and hundreds of volunteers and coaches. TELL US ABOUT THE PADDLEBOARD PROGRAM AND TEAM THAT HAS BEEN A HUGE SUCCESS.
Stand Up Paddle became a Special Olympics Sport 2013 with the support of YOLO Board. Walton County was one of the first County Programs and Florida was the first state to start an SUP program in 2013. Walton County sent two athletes to USA Games this past summer in Seattle, WA. Athlete Hutch Weeks brought home a bronze medal in SUP and Greg Floyd won a silver medal in Powerlifting. Our Special Olympics Program continues to grow and we are very proud of our athletes and thankful for the support and generosity from the people and businesses in Walton County. History really comes alive in DeFuniak Springs. During the Victorian era, it was home to a resort known as “The Education Resort of the South.” The grounds of its campus first welcomed visitors in 1885 and incredibly are still intact for touring today - the structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. THE WALTON COUNTY LIBRARY, FLORIDA’S OLDEST OPERATING
The town of DeFuniak Springs contains other historically significant landmarks too. The Walton County Library is actually the oldest operating library in the state of Florida and holds many first-edition books. The Walton County Heritage Museum is located on the north side of Chipley Park in the old train depot. Their hours of operation are Wednesday - Saturday from 11am to 4pm and while there you can learn more about the history of the area and the lives of our earliest Walton County residents. What we didn’t realize was that there wasn’t anyone within 50 miles of our location who provided full service balloon decor for events. We immediately began promoting our design, delivery, and installation services and we are thrilled it has become so popular in Walton County. We offer same day store pickup as well as onsite delivery and set up. We make it easy to include balloons at every celebration!
