CHAMPIONING EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

A JOURNEY THROUGH FOOTBALL, PHILANTHROPY, AND THE POWER OF PICKLEBALL

COVER STORY

Danny Wuerffel’s name evokes images of college football greatness, but his impact extends far beyond the gridiron. From his legendary career as a Florida Gator to his unwavering commitment to philanthropy and his recent passion for pickleball, Wuerffel’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the importance of giving back.

Being a Florida Gator was more than just playing football. Danny recalls, “Being a Gator was an incredible experience, and the support from the community, the fans, and the University was like none other. Being a part of an outstanding football program was great, but I was also blessed to be a part of an incredible academic institution.”

The NCAA moment heard around the world came in 1996 when he clinched the Heisman Trophy, a dream realized for many collegiate football athletes. The joy of hearing his name called that December night in New York City was heightened by the presence of his family, who shared in the celebration of this crowning achievement. Central to Wuerffel’s success at Florida was his relationship with Coach Steve Spurrier, whose mentorship left an indelible mark on the young quarterback. Under Spurrier’s guidance, Wuerffel not only honed his skills on the field but also imbibed valuable lessons in adaptability, resilience, and leadership that would shape his personal and professional journey. Danny shared, “Two of my favorite moments at Florida with Coach Spurrier are ironically the bookends to my career. The first was a 28-yard touchdown I threw to my friend Chris Doering with eight seconds left to beat Kentucky in 1993. The second was walking off the field at the end of the Sugar Bowl in 1997 after our victory over

HAUTE LIVING NAPLES 20 COVER STORY

Florida State and, ultimately, the first national championship for Florida. Celebrating those moments with Coach Spurrier was incredibly special.”

While the transition to the NFL presented its own set of challenges, Wuerffel embraced the opportunity to compete at the professional level. Drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 1997 NFL Draft, Danny would go on to play for seven years for teams like the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins. Danny reflects, “I really enjoyed, and I’m very thankful for, my seven years in the NFL. While I never found quite the same success as I did at Florida, I met lots of wonderful people, saw several amazing cities, and ultimately got introduced to Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans, which has become part of my life’s work.” Under Wuerffel’s leadership, Desire Street Ministries has implemented a holistic approach to community development, focusing on building sustainable leaders who can effect lasting change in their neighborhoods. The organization provides resources, mentorship, and support to individuals and families facing economic hardship, systemic inequality, and social challenges. Through programs such as leadership training, educational initiatives, and community outreach, Desire Street Ministries equips individuals with the tools and skills needed to break the cycle of poverty and build thriving, resilient communities.

Beyond his achievements on the field, Wuerffel’s commitment to community service has earned him acclaim. The establishment of the Wuerffel Trophy, awarded annually to student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics, and community service, reflects his dedication to making a positive impact beyond the game. Similarly, his work with Desire Street Ministries has transformed countless lives, empowering young people to overcome adversity and become leaders in their communities.

In addition to his philanthropic endeavors, Wuerffel uses platforms like broadcasting and public speaking to amplify his message of service and positivity. “I want to inspire others to join the cause and make a difference in the world,” he states. “Through organizations like Desire Street Ministries and the Wuerffel Foundation, we can effect positive change.”

For Wuerffel, legacy is about more than wins--it’s about the

COVER STORY HAUTE LIVING NAPLES 23

lives he has touched and the causes he has championed. The Desire Cup stands as a shining example of Danny Wuerffel’s commitment to philanthropy and community engagement, combining his passion for sports with his desire to make a positive impact in the world. This annual celebrity golf tournament and gala, held right before the highly anticipated Florida versus Georgia football game, has become a highlight on the calendar for fans and supporters alike.

Throughout his journey, Wuerffel’s family has been his rock, providing unwavering support and guidance. From his wife’s dedication to his children’s achievements, their presence has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. As a mentor to young athletes, Wuerffel emphasizes the importance of academic diligence, teamwork, and community engagement, urging them to make a positive impact both on and off the field.

In recent years, Wuerffel has found success and fulfillment in pickleball, a sport that has captured his passion and competitive spirit. Drawing on his background in football, he approaches pickleball with the same dedication and determination, using his platform to promote inclusivity, community, and physical wellness. Looking ahead, Wuerffel sees tremendous potential for pickleball to continue its rapid growth and become a catalyst for positive change in communities across the country. Through partnerships and initiatives aimed at promoting the sport and giving back to those in need, he hopes to leave a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the confines of the court.

In Danny Wuerffel’s remarkable journey, football is just one chapter in a story defined by resilience, compassion, and dedication to making a difference in the world. From the hallowed halls of Florida Field to the grassroots communities he serves, Wuerffel’s impact is felt far and wide, inspiring others to dream big, work hard, and leave a legacy of excellence and service.

Caftans and Couture: Inside The Captivating World of Cameron Silver

Decades of Style: The Fashion Journey of Cameron Silver.

CAMERON SILVER STANDS AT THE HELM OF DECADES, the famed vintage fashion boutique in Los Angeles celebrated for its exclusive array of designer garments and accessories that span from the 1920s to the present.

Named by Time Magazine as one of the “25 Most Influential Names and Faces in Fashion,” Silver is a trusted stylist for A-list celebrities during high-profile events such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars and serves as a consultant for premier fashion and luxury brands internationally. Silver has also put together a museum exhibit for MOCA, launched a signature shoe line inspired by mid-century to late 20th-century styles, contributed to leading fashion magazines, and been featured in the hit Bravo reality series “Dukes of Melrose,” focusing on his boutique.

Silver is also known for his acclaimed, best-selling book Decades: A Century of Fashion and is a sought-after speaker on the evolution of fashion, offering perspectives on its history, current landscape, and future. His home base is Los Angeles, where he also served as the fashion director for the H Halston and H by Halston collections. Silver combines his extensive historical knowledge of this iconic American brand with creative direction, providing seasonal inspiration and style counsel that resonates with the Halston heritage and its distinctive aesthetic. His acclaim as an international fashion maven is bolstered by his role as a celebrity stylist of global renown, a best-selling author, and a recognized expert on fashion with frequent appearances on television programs including “Good Morning America” and “CBS This Morning.”

Journey with Silver into the captivating world of caftan’s eternal allure in his upcoming book Caftans: From Classical to Camp. Crafted by Silver, this spellbinding tome unveils the

ceaseless charm of caftans. As a garment with deep historical roots, the caftan has been a staple across centuries and societies, gracing everything from ancient art to modern-day fashion extravaganzas.

It spans a spectrum from casual wear to the pinnacles of high fashion. Silver navigates us through its diverse expressions: “Caftan Couture” features masterpieces from icons like Yves Saint Laurent to Oscar de la Renta; “Caftan Stars” highlights the garment as donned by luminaries and on-screen legends such as Elizabeth Taylor and Jennifer Lopez; “Mantas” uncovers the trend of caftans among men; “Resort” sheds light on the vibrant, airy caftans perfect for vacation mode; “Caftan Capital” celebrates Morocco’s storied caftans; while “Caftans Today” captures the garment’s modern-day renaissance as a versatile, inclusive, and universally appealing fashion choice. The book is a visual feast, a collage of imagery that spans eras, showcasing ‘Caftans’ in a display of elegance, whimsy, and ease — a tribute to a piece of clothing as vibrant and timeless as it represents.

Haute Living Naples goes behind the seams with legendary fashion trailblazer Cameron Silver to discuss his global fashion ventures, what inspires him, and his new book, Caftans: From Classical to Camp releasing this May.

Haute Living (HL): When did you know you wanted to work in fashion?

Cameron Silver (CS): It really wasn’t planned as I trained to be an actor and singer, but I always loved clothes. I worked retail all through high school and college, so a career in fashion was not entirely foreign and was a natural detour from my original performing desires.

FEATURE

HL: What inspires you most in your work?

CS: It is all about the “right dress” on the “right woman” as I love the matchmaking of fashion and helping someone feel his or her best.

HL: What is one of the most memorable moments in your career?

CS: Probably when Catherine Deneuve would ring me to visit her apartment in Paris and I would help edit her closet.

HL: Who is a fashion icon you’d love to meet?

CS: I would have loved to have met Marlene Dietrich and Baron de Redé. Regarding the Baron de Redé, I loved his personal style, his ability to entertain, and wish I had more of his business acumen!

HL: What is one fashion item you cannot live without?

CS: It’s not really fashion, but a black cashmere sweater (or quality tee in the warmer months) is perfect with jeans or dressier under a blazer.

HL: What are your favorite trends for Spring 2024 and how do you integrate trends with vintage fashion?

CS: CAFTANS!

HL: What is your favorite fashion decade if you had to pick just one, and why?

CS: I love the 1970s as its really the explosion for American fashion having global renaissance and I always reference the 70s when consulting with luxury brands.

HL: How has travel inspired your work?

CS: I feel like the United Nations of Fashion as I have traveled from Kyiv to Beirut, so everywhere I go, I learn about a city through its fashion history and current offerings. Some people travel for food, but I travel for style.

HL: In anticipation of your upcoming book Caftans: From Classical to Camp, what is one caftan you could live in?

CS: I have always been a caftan advocate and a simple bisht, which

is what the Saudis call the men’s traditional floor-length caftan, is both elegant and comfortable.

HL: What are you most excited about for your visit to Naples this March for your book signing and Decades pop-up shop?

CS: I have been spending a lot of time in Palm Beach, so it will be fun to return to Naples and be inspired by the Southwest coast and be reminded of its distinctive style.

HL: What is one quote or mantra you live by?

CS: There are a few, but lately, I love this line from the musical Chicago: “You can like the life you’re living. You can live the life you like.”

HL: What is the best piece of advice you have received in your life?

CS: It’s easier to be nice.

Pre-order Cameron Silver’s book Caftans: From Classical to Camp, published by Vendome Press, which will be released in May 2024.

Naples residents and travelers had the privilege of meeting the fashion legend Cameron Silver of Decades on March 21 – 24 during the Le Bonne Vie pop-up at Camargo Court on Third Street South. They enjoyed cocktails, conversation, and vintage shopping with Cameron.

Check out Silver’s current exhibition “Endless Summer: Palm Beach Resort Wear” through May 25, 2024 at the Richard & Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum.

Silver’s caftan collection is inspired by his favorites designs featured in the book and is being produced in India in strictly limited quantities with some being one-of-a-kind sourced from vintage saris. They are scheduled to make their debut on April 22nd in Houston. For more information, visit: cameronsilver.com, decadesinc.com, +1-323-788-2757 , @CameronSilver

POWER COUPLES:

THE DYNAMIC DUO’S SHAPING THE HEART OF NAPLES

SIX STORIES OF REMARKABLE SUCCESS, IMPACTFUL PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS, AND THE ENDURING BONDS THAT FUEL THEIR JOURNEY’S TOGETHER.

Danielle and Patrick Bishop

A dynamic duo making waves in business and philanthropy with their unwavering commitment to excellence and compassion.

WHEN THEY MET. Patrick’s career commenced in Boston’s booming construction industry, where he climbed to the role of executive vice president at Suffolk Construction. His success was marked by leadership, strategic growth, and $2 billion in revenue upon his departure. Reflecting on his journey, Patrick emphasizes, “The true cornerstone lies in the caliber of those you surround yourself with.”

Drawn to the same industry, Danielle joined the company, where fate intervened, bringing their paths together amidst project blueprints and ambitious visions. Despite Patrick’s demanding travel schedule, their connection was undeniable. “If I wanted a future with Danielle,” he reflects, “a decision needed to be made, and without looking back, I chose Danielle.” Patrick later served as CEO of Titan Consulting for over 13 years before co-founding ReRoute Americas with Danielle.

A POWERHOUSE PARTNERSHIP. Driven by a shared vision for sustainability within the food service industry, the husband-and-wife duo established ReRoute Americas in 2021. Disrupting traditional supply chains, the company delivers high-quality, eco-friendly products while promoting responsible business practices. But ReRoute Americas is more than just a company; it’s a testament to the power of partnership and sacrifice.

Patrick, recognizing Danielle’s competitive spirit and dedication, says, “She consistently leads our sales team yet remains remarkably humble. Her drive is exceptional, and she actively seeks ways to excel – a true asset in this industry.” This drive extends beyond professional pursuits. Despite her success, Danielle prioritizes family, juggling work with childcare and chores and instilling in their daughters the understanding that their hard work ultimately benefits the family.

From Danielle’s perspective, Patrick is a mentor and motivator. “I’ve learned immensely from his business acumen,” she shares. “He pushes me beyond my comfort zone, helping me grow while always being my biggest cheerleader.” She recognizes his sacrifices, acknowledging the travel and missed time with their family.

GIVING HEARTS. Beyond building a thriving business, Patrick and Danielle Bishop are passionate about making a difference in their community and beyond. Philanthropy plays a central role in their lives, driven by personal experiences and a strong desire to support the causes they believe in.

Patrick, a beneficiary of educational aid throughout his academic journey, understands the transformative power of opportunity. He champions similar support through organizations like the Community School of Naples and the Angel Ball. His personal fight against cancer further fuels his commitment to research efforts. He actively supports organizations like The First Tee Foundation and The Tiger Woods Foundation, ensuring access to golf for underprivileged children, and previously served as a director for The Red and Blue Foundation and The Derenzo Foundation, both in Boston, focused on empowering disadvantaged youth.

Danielle, too, contributes her time and resources. Actively involved in their daughters’ school, she co-chaired the Angel Ball, further emphasizing their commitment to education. Her passion lies in animal welfare. “I’ve always had dogs,” she confided, explaining her dedication to organizations like the ASPCA and Long Island Bulldog Rescue. Danielle’s dream is to open an animal rescue facility, and she actively seeks involvement with local organizations like Domestic Animal Services and The Humane Society of Naples.

FAMILY FIRST. Patrick and Danielle Bishop prioritize a different kind of achievement – a thriving family. Despite demanding careers at ReRoute Americas and active roles in philanthropy, they ensure “family always comes first,” as Patrick affirms. But how do they manage the juggling act?

“It’s not easy,” Danielle admits, “but I make a daily priority list, ensuring I’m present for my daughters.”

Patrick echoes the sentiment. “We’re both driven,” he says, “but family comes first,” a commitment they instill in their daughters, reminding them that their love and support is unwavering.

A LOVE “NOTE” TO OTHERS. The duo offers invaluable advice to aspiring couples. Patrick emphasizes the importance of open communication, shared values, and continuous learning, noting, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” They advocate prioritizing happiness, family, and personal values, cautioning against seeking validation from everyone or blindly following the crowd. Nena and Bill Beynon

Building an Empire and Giving Back – A Beynon Legacy

BUILDING EMPIRES. Bill Beynon’s journey began in northern West Virginia, where he initially worked for a national insurance company while attending college. After graduating, he moved to Pittsburgh, where he served as the director of estate planning for a corporate benefits firm, refining his financial management skills. In 1998, Bill made a pivotal move to Naples, where he co-founded Capital Wealth Advisors (CWA). CWA has since grown into a nationally recognized wealth management and planning firm with over 60 team members across multiple locations.

Meanwhile, Nena, originally from Grafton, West Virginia, pursued a career in education. She taught elementary school before also relocating to Naples. It was in West Virginia where their paths first crossed, thanks to mutual friends. This chance meeting marked the beginning of their journey together as a power couple, both personally and professionally, as they embarked on a shared path of growth and community impact.

A Heart for Giving. Philanthropy is at the core of the Beynon’s identity. Over the years, Bill has been actively involved in several nonprofits, channeling his passion for service into five key areas: children, education, hunger, veterans’ support, and cancer research. At the forefront of their philanthropic endeavors is their unwavering dedication to the Naples Children and Education Foundation (NCEF), where they serve as active trustees. Their involvement extends beyond mere participation; they’ve co-chaired the prestigious Naples Winter Wine Festival, an event that epitomizes the spirit of giving. Bill’s role on the board of directors and the grant committee underscores their commitment to supporting the holistic development of children in Collier County. “The true measure of our success lies in the impact we make on the lives of others. Through our philanthropic efforts, we strive to create a community where every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed,” Bill shares.

The Beynon’s philanthropic journey also intersects with organizations like Champions for Learning and the Take Stock in Children Program, where they’ve formed meaningful relationships with mentees and witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. Additionally, their experience with cancer hitting close to home prompted them to focus on cancer research, particularly through the American Cancer Society’s Laureate Society. Their

dedication to supporting families in need is evident through initiatives like the Thanksgiving Turkey Drop at St. Matthew’s House, where thousands of families are fed each year, and their involvement in veterans’ care through organizations like Home Base and the Warrior Health Foundation.

For Nena, children hold a special place in her heart, reflected in her active involvement with organizations like Grace Place, NCEF, and Champions for Learning. As an elder at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church and a member of the PTO board at Pine Ridge Middle School, she’s deeply entrenched in community initiatives aimed at nurturing and empowering the next generation.

FINDING PARADISE. For Bill, serendipity led him to Naples—a city he now calls home with affection. “Luck played a significant role,” he reflects. “I was recruited to join a financial and estate planning firm here in the late ‘90s while living in Pittsburgh. Despite knowing little about Naples, I made the leap, drawn by the promise of warmer weather and a change of scenery.” Upon arrival, Bill found himself captivated by more than just the picturesque landscapes. “The community’s warmth and generosity struck a chord,” he recalls fondly. “Naples’ people and culture are its true treasures, defining its unique charm.”

Nena’s journey to Naples followed a similar trajectory, albeit with a touch of familiarity. “After visiting for three consecutive summers, I officially moved here after marrying Bill in 2001,” she shares. “Over the past 23 years, Naples has become synonymous with home—a place filled with kind-hearted and benevolent individuals.”

FAMILY FIRST. Maintaining equilibrium amidst bustling careers, parenting duties, and philanthropic engagements is a daily endeavor. With Bill at the helm of a thriving company and both committed to giving back to their community, organization is their lifeline. “Life balance is crucial,” Bill stresses. “We rely on meticulous scheduling to manage our various responsibilities effectively.” Yet, despite their best efforts, they admit that finding equilibrium remains their biggest challenge. With support from their CWA team and family, they navigate their roles with grace. Open communication, especially with their daughter, is key. “We involve her in our philanthropic projects,” Bill explains. “Her enthusiasm for community initiatives is truly inspiring.”

For Nina, balancing career, philanthropy, and family involves careful planning and occasional delegation. “It’s a balancing act,” she admits.

Despite Bill’s frequent travel for business, family time remains nonnegotiable. “Being there for our family is paramount,” he emphasizes. “It’s about making deliberate choices to prioritize what matters most.”

In their journey, planning and organization serve as guiding principles, enabling them to navigate life’s complexities with purpose and poise. As they continue to weave together their professional endeavors, family life, and philanthropic pursuits, the Beynon’s exemplify the profound impact of intentionality and commitment in achieving a harmonious and fulfilling life.

A

LOVE NOTE TO

OTHERS.

For couples aspiring to achieve both personal fulfillment and professional success, the Beynon’s offer sage advice. Bill encourages seizing the abundant opportunities Naples offers, professionally and philanthropically, while Nena emphasizes cherishing the present, embracing the diverse community, and pursuing passions with dedication.

Samantha and Jim Bloom

&

Champion of Justice Creative Visionary: Naples’ Power Couple Shapes a New Legacy

BUILDING AN EMPIRE. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised on a family dairy farm in central Pennsylvania, Jim Bloom’s upbringing instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of community. His dream of becoming a law enforcement officer led him to pursue a degree in police administration, ultimately landing him a position with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office over three decades ago when he moved to Naples. Starting as a corrections deputy at the Naples Jail Center in 1993, Jim’s trajectory within the Collier County Sheriff’s Office soared as he took on various roles, from patrol deputy to SWAT team leader and commander. His dedication and leadership skills propelled him through the ranks, culminating in his current position as undersheriff. Jim is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, further enriching his expertise in law enforcement. Reflecting on his journey, Jim shares, “I originally only planned on staying in Collier County for a few years until I had enough experience to apply with the Drug Enforcement Administration. However, around 1998, I realized that the community of Collier County and the Sheriff’s Office were my home, and I wanted to stay here and raise my family.”

Over the years, Samantha Bloom has collaborated with over 40 businesses downtown, showcasing their unique offerings through captivating visuals. Reflecting on her experience, she shares, “Visual storytelling is a powerful tool in shaping brand narratives, and it’s been a privilege to work with so many local businesses in our community.” Recently, she took on a new role as co-owner of Gallery One on 5th Avenue South, blending her passion for photography with support for local artists. Leading the gallery’s expansion to 4000 square feet, she notes, “Creating a vibrant community hub where artists can thrive has been incredibly rewarding.”

Navigating Naples’ dynamic media and art scene, she emphasizes the importance of creativity, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. “Every click of the camera reminds me of the beauty surrounding us and the stories waiting to be shared,” she reflects.

HOW THEY MET. Their love story began unexpectedly when Jim sought out professional photography services from Samantha. “I wanted to have some professional pictures done for my children for Christmas, and I was told that my now wife was the best in town,” Jim reminisces. “As a result, she wouldn’t let me pay her, so I asked her to dinner, and the rest is history. We had an immediate connection, although we were so different, and ultimately, our own differences seemed to complement each other and eventually led to becoming one of our great connection points as a couple.”

Together, Samantha and Jim have embraced the vibrant culture, delicious cuisine, and warm community spirit of Naples, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

FAMILY FIRST. For Jim, fostering a nurturing family environment amidst the hustle and bustle of their busy lives begins with a commitment to traditional values. “It can be very difficult at times to balance family time with career and philanthropic endeavors, but honestly, we seem to have figured out the formula,” Jim shares. “I believe it is imperative to keep your children very active with sports and community events and to also be there to support them while they are involved in those things.”

Central to their approach is the ritual of gathering as a family. “I enjoy spending quality time with my husband. He has established a traditional atmosphere for raising our children, where we have family dinners and game nights,” Samantha affirms. “Our family dinners are filled with laughter and delicious meals, while our game nights are always a source

of friendly competition and joy,” Samantha reflects. “I am grateful for the traditions we have built as a family, fostering bonds that strengthen us through every moment of our lives.”

GIVING HEARTS. Jim’s philanthropic journey was deeply rooted in his upbringing. “I was raised in a family and a community that taught me the importance of giving back,” Jim shares. “The community of Collier County is one of the most giving communities I have ever seen, and we feel blessed to be a part of it.” His philanthropic endeavors span various causes, with a focus on initiatives benefiting the youth. “A lot of people believe Naples is special because of our beaches or sunsets, but honestly, I believe it is special because of the people who reside here and what they do for our community,” Jim explains. “I personally love several of our local causes, such as The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Youth Haven, STARability Foundation, and the Collier County Junior Deputy League.”

Since the beginning of their relationship, Samantha and Jim’s charitable efforts have become intertwined, fueled by a shared desire to uplift the underprivileged. “Observing my husband’s daily battles for the underprivileged has inspired us to champion causes aiding young children and women,” Samantha shares. With a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the less fortunate, Samantha’s philanthropic dedication stems from empathy and compassion. Together, they support organizations striving to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

A LOVE NOTE TO OTHERS. When asked about their advice for aspiring couples, Jim and Samantha offered valuable insights from their own journey. Jim emphasized the importance of unconditional support, highlighting his wife Sammy’s pivotal role as his strongest supporter through highs and lows. He stressed the significance of open communication, stating, “Our ability to respect each other and openly listen to each other’s side has been extremely important and beneficial to both of us over time.”

Samantha echoed this sentiment, and emphasized the importance of focusing on personal growth rather than comparing oneself to others. “In Naples, it’s challenging to avoid getting caught up in keeping up with others,” she explained. “However, in our world, we understand that our main competition is ourselves. As long as we are stronger than we were yesterday, we are happy.” Together, their advice underscores the importance of mutual support, trust, and personal growth in building a successful and fulfilling relationship.

Emilia Miteva and Blaze Zdradev

Crafting a Real Estate Empire with Heart and Purpose

HOW THEY MET. A world away from their native Macedonia in Eastern Europe, Blaze Zdradev and Emilia Miteva have carved a remarkable niche in the heart of Naples real estate. Their story began not amidst our beautiful coastline but in the halls of a Macedonian high school. Blaze, with an innate talent for connecting with people, knew from the moment he met Emilia that she was his forever person. Though Blaze initially pursued studies in criminal justice, his passion for building relationships steered him towards the world of real estate. Following their move to Naples, this passion ignited a mission – to help others find their own slice of paradise in this sun-drenched haven.

Meanwhile, Emilia, a law graduate in Macedonia, continued her legal education in Naples. She focused her skills on real estate law, perfectly complementing Blaze’s vision. Their individual expertise, combined with a shared love for Naples, became the foundation for a powerhouse business. Blaze Luxury Homes, a name now synonymous with personalized service and unparalleled expertise in the Naples market, was born under the prestige of John R. Wood Properties and Christie’s International Real Estate. Together, this powerhouse-couple leverages their strengths – Blaze’s charisma attracting discerning clients and Emilia’s legal background ensuring smooth transactions –to build a real estate empire that caters to a global clientele.

GIVING HEARTS. Beyond their professional pursuits, philanthropy lies at the heart of Blaze and Emilia’s endeavors. Their commitment to making a positive impact in our community is evident in their active involvement in charitable causes, particularly those aimed at supporting premature babies and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Naples Community Hospital (NCH). Emilia’s personal experience as a mother of premature babies fuels their passion for this cause, driving them to contribute tirelessly to fundraising events and initiatives aimed at providing critical support to families in need.

“As both of our daughters were born prematurely, we understand the importance of having a NICU Level 3 in Naples and raising money for the NICU and premature babies. We have been trying our best to contribute to the community and make the most of our time, recently participating in significant donation events aimed at supporting this great cause.”. Blaze emphasizes the importance of giving back, stating, “Philanthropy offers an opportunity for education, relief, growth, and success that may not have been available otherwise.”

FAMILY FIRST. Blaze fondly recalls their initial visit, stating, “Fifteen

years ago, we visited Naples for a friend’s wedding. Back then, Naples was a quiet place, nothing like what it is today. However, we immediately fell in love with Naples and knew it was a paradise, unlike any other place in the world.” Emilia, reflecting on her childhood dreams, adds, “When I was a child growing up in Macedonia Eastern Europe, I always dreamed of living in a place where sunshine and water were my best friends. The first time I visited Naples, I knew it was the place where I wanted to live and raise my children.”

Despite their demanding careers and active involvement in philanthropy, the couple emphasizes the importance of family. Blaze explains, “We are a busy family, but we prioritize spending time together. Success requires personal sacrifice and often takes us away from our loved ones. However, every moment I spend with my kids recharges my energy and motivates me to keep moving forward. They are my main source of inspiration.” Emilia echoes his sentiments, noting the challenges of balancing work and family life. “It can be challenging to juggle a busy work schedule and a busy personal life. We have three children, two of whom are under the age of three. Every day, our children teach us to be happy and never give up. We cherish the days we spend with our family.”

A LOVE NOTE TO OTHERS. For Blaze and Emilia, a successful partnership is built on mutual respect and understanding. When asked for advice on achieving both personal and professional fulfillment as a couple, they shared valuable insights. Blaze emphasizes the importance of commitment and support, advising, “Set relationship goals and plan for your future together to show long-term commitment. Avoid judging, criticizing, or blaming each other; we’re all human.” Emilia echoes, “Listening is key. Be adaptable, allowing your relationship to grow as you both do.”

Edee and Michael DeLuca

Navigating Careers, Fostering Family, and Lighting the Way for Others

BUILDING EMPIRES. Michael and Edee DeLuca’s professional trajectories exemplify the transformative power of hard work, resilience, and seizing opportunities. Originally from Lexington, Kentucky, Michael began his journey after completing his undergraduate degrees and MBA from the University of Dayton. His career soared at Ernst & Young in Atlanta, where he delved into the demanding world of finance. Reflecting on those formative years, Michael recalls, “Professionally, I was grinding in those early years, often working 70 hours plus weekly, and personally, I was head over heels for someone who saw more in me than even I did.”

Edee’s path began in Mobile, Alabama, where she developed a deep appreciation for history and a love for the coast. With an undergraduate and master’s degree from Auburn University, she embarked on her career at Ernst & Young in Atlanta. Intending to also pursue law school after some time with the Big 4, she shares, “I quickly realized that coupling the financial sector with my analytical mindset could provide for a dynamic career doing what I love, without law school.” Fate intervened on a personal level when she crossed paths with Michael. “The rest is history - we got married four years later,” Edee fondly remembers.

Their synergy blossomed as they ventured into new territories, leveraging their combined expertise to navigate complex business landscapes. From Fortune 100 to forensic financial analysis and leading litigation services at HBK CPAs & Consultants, Edee’s career trajectory exemplifies versatility and determination. She transitioned to private consulting in the C-suite space, where her strategic vision and operational acumen drive organizational growth and transformation. “Combining my financial background with operations, a growthcentered vision, and the various aspects of what it takes to run a business effectively has allowed me to fulfill my passion for growing and leading businesses,” Edee shares.

Michael’s journey led him from Ernst & Young to Deloitte, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the financial institution’s practice in Atlanta. Relocating to Southwest Florida with Edee, Michael found his true calling in fostering local business and philanthropic communities. “I joined the firm in a manager role and have never looked back,” Michael affirms. Today, he serves as the principal-in-charge for the state of Florida at HBK CPAs & Consultants and sits on the firm’s executive committee, steering the national top 50 firm toward greater heights.

A GIVING HEART. Reflecting on the profound impact of his upbringing on philanthropic endeavors, Michael shares, “I feel extremely fortunate to be born in this great country and into a loving family who believed in giving back whatever you could. Growing up, donating time, talent, and whatever treasure you could afford was just a way of life for us. Supporting causes around at-risk, underserved children, veterans and those that protect our freedom is a shared passion for both me and Edee.”

Edee shares her own journey toward philanthropy, rooted in personal tragedy, “My passion comes from a deep place within myself.” Losing her mother in a car accident and being raised by her grandparents, Edee gained an appreciation for the human spirit and the impact of support systems: “Having the great fortune of being raised by my Christian grandparents provided me such a different perspective on life.” For the DeLucas, philanthropy is a deeply ingrained value, reflecting their commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others and our community.

FAMILY FIRST. Prioritizing faith, communication, and quality time

has been instrumental in fostering a harmonious household for the DeLucas. Drawing inspiration from their upbringings, they reflect on the strength and determination of their grandparents, who instilled in them the importance of hard work and service. Michael shares, “My paternal grandparents came from immigrant Italian and German families. Through hard work and deep faith in Christ, they built a family and always gave back,” emphasizing the legacy of generosity instilled in their own philanthropic efforts.

Edee shares his sentiments as well as the importance of maintaining a family environment no matter how busy schedules become. “It’s important to have small consistencies that allow you to come together undistracted, even on the busiest days,” she shares. Their daily rituals, such as sharing dinner together and going for walks, serve as pillars of connection and communication in their relationship.

A LOVE NOTE TO OTHERS.

To aspiring couples, the DeLucas offer timeless wisdom rooted in faith, compassion, and relentless determination. Defining success on their terms, maintaining open communication, and embracing adversity as a catalyst for growth, they’ve forged a path marked by perseverance. “Life happens, but you need a foundation of trust and bonded commitment for both successes and obstacles,” advises Michael. They stress continuous self-improvement and working as a united team.

Edee emphasizes “Christ, Compassion, & Communication” as pillars of their marriage. “By keeping Christ at the center and finding gratitude in good times while holding to our faith in difficult times, we’ve been blessed.” Edee encourages couples to remain true to themselves, strive for constant growth, and maintain unwavering determination in pursuit of their goals with integrity.

Meet the Cooneys

Trailblazers For Philanthropy And Architecture In SWFL

BUILDING EMPIRE. Growing up in East Hampton, Long Island, John Cooney was always drawn to architecture. East Hampton and Naples have large tourist communities with opposite peak seasons. The architecture fascinated John from a young age. He began his career as a beach boy and then became a lifeguard, spending time admiring the oceanfront homes. These homes showcased a postmodern shingle style with cedar shingles, white trim, and windows, alongside sculptural modernist architecture. His curiosity led him to quit lifeguarding to work as a mason’s helper, a tough job that allowed him to explore construction sites and further his interest in architecture.

“I was mixing mortar and carrying cement blocks; it was an extremely difficult job,” John reflects. “But I was actually on the sites now, and I was able to walk these homes and really see how they were put together, which furthered my interest in architecture, so I knew right away I didn’t want to be a builder; I wanted to design these homes.”

John went on to study architecture at Kent State University in Ohio. After college, despite a market downturn, he returned to the Hamptons for a summer internship that deepened his passion for architecture. However, the slow market prompted a move to Naples, where his sister and brother-in-law lived. His brother-inlaw, a structural engineer, mentioned job opportunities, which led him to relocate to Naples 34 years ago. John started working for several firms, meeting his business partner Randall Stofft 28 years ago. Since then, they have expanded their business from two to 23 employees and opened three offices in Southwest Florida, including Delray Beach and Sarasota.

Recently, John and his team successfully concluded the construction of a 40,000-square-foot residence on Gordon Drive, marking the largest project their office has undertaken to date. The project saw a revival of the Mediterranean style that was once prevalent in their portfolio, which is interesting because it reflects a return to the roots that built their office.

“Our architectural approach is to meet the desires of our clients with designs that not only suit the Florida lifestyle but also use materials and design principles that stand the test of time,” express John. “Our logo might say ‘distinctive inspirational architecture,’ which, while not our mission statement, encapsulates the essence of our work. We strive to set trends, not follow them.”

John’s wife, Carrie, started working at 18 as a runner at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. Carrie lost that job during the stock market crash on October 19, 1987, and then transitioned into retail. She worked in a clothing buyer’s office, and also in customer service at Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Store. Eventually, Carrie moved to Naples for a change of scenery and quickly found a job in retail again.

HOW THEY MET. One night, while out with friends, she met John at a bar called Garrett’s, which is now The Spa at Naples Grande. That was in 1991, and their first date was on Keewaydin Island. Interestingly, John and Carrie never thought they would own a house there, but it truly came full circle.

FAMILY FIRST. The Naples Children & Education Foundation, founders of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, recently hired Stofft Cooney Architects to design its headquarters on Goodlett Road.

“We chose to undertake this project pro bono as part of our charitable mission,” states John. “While most of our commercial projects are paid, we actively support several charities, particularly those dear to my family. We’re incredibly proud of the NCEF headquarters. The Wine Festival has been a staple in this community for 24 years, and we are honored to have provided them with a permanent home.”

Carrie’s philanthropy journey began when her son Brett was diagnosed with autism. She got involved in fundraising at Naples Park Elementary. Carrie was drawn to helping the school with fundraisers and scholarships. When Brett attended the Eden School for Autism, Carrie joined the fundraising committee there and continued supporting various Collier County Public Schools’ initiatives.

GIVING HEARTS. STARability was founded by a group of parents 40 years ago, seeking social opportunities for their adult children. It started with bowling leagues and dinners and grew as more families joined. In 2016, as Brett was aging out of the school system, Carrie and John couldn’t find a suitable day program for him, so Carrie developed one with Madison McNally, who specializes in adult transition programs. They planned to independently start this program, but Karen Govern, the CEO of STARability, learned of their efforts and incorporated it into their services. After a successful fundraising effort, they rebranded to focus more on abilities rather than disabilities.

Recently, STARability acquired a property on the corner of Immokalee Road and I-75 at the former Hodges University site. This site, now merged with another nonprofit whose music program they’ve incorporated, will be transformed into STARability’s permanent home in Collier County. STARability is set to renovate and expand a 42,000 square foot building to suit STARability’s future needs.

“We’re here to do a job, focused on creating outstanding architecture that enhances the community,” says John. “However, our charity work also plays a crucial role in enriching the local environment.”

Trailblazers is STARability’s program that provides vocational training and employment-based activities to help individuals develop skills and gain exposure to the work world.

“We’re committed to ensuring that Trailblazers and STARability not only serve our community, but also set a foundation for potential expansion,” states John. “My father, a former athletic director and football coach, taught me the value of hard work, which I apply to both my career and charity work. I strive to provide the best care possible, not to be the best charity but to do the best for those we serve.”

Regarding their recent property acquisition for STARability Foundation, John said it was a community effort, thanks to generous donations, including a $5 million leadership gift from Tom Golisano. A LOVE NOTE TO OTHERS. “The best advice for couples is to communicate openly about what’s important to both of you,” expresses Carrie. “Identify the causes you’re passionate about and dedicate your time, talent, and resources as you’re able. While you may not always have financial resources to contribute, dedicating time to your chosen causes can be just as impactful.”

Preserving a Legacy:

Randy Kurtz Retires, David Gordon Assumes Helm at Kurtz Homes Naples. A Seamless Succession Ensures Continuity of Excellence in Luxury Custom Home Building.

AFTER FOUR DECADES OF UNWAVERING DEDICATION AND visionary leadership, Randy Kurtz, the esteemed co-founder and guiding force behind Kurtz Homes Naples, announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy to be celebrated by generations to come. Randy’s tenure at the helm of the company, founded in 1982, has been characterized by his relentless devotion to his father Ron’s vision, the pursuit of excellence. As an award-winning luxury custom home builder in the region, the company maintains a hard-earned reputation for integrity and quality, ensuring that every client and project receives unparalleled attention and care.

With a focus on a keen eye for detail, superior craftsmanship, family, and faith at the forefront, Randy helped shape the company’s growth and direction, leading to what he highlights as two significant achievements: integrating his daughters into the company to uphold the family tradition and hiring his son-in-law over 15 years ago. However, Randy always understood that the enduring influence of Kurtz Homes Naples extended far beyond immediate family ties. “Quality workmanship can only come with a tight-knit community of dedicated employees who can be integral to a company’s success,” Randy asserted. His contribution also encompassed the significant role he played in shaping the landscape of Naples, including the

construction of numerous prestigious estates along the coast, particularly in Port Royal, adding to the iconic beauty and allure of our shoreline.

His crowning achievement? Relocating the company’s offices to The Collective, a visionary project that underscored his commitment to innovation and community engagement. This strategic move provided Kurtz Homes Naples with access to top-tier industry resources and reinforced its position as a cornerstone of the Naples Design District.

Randy’s impact extended beyond the company’s walls. He quietly supported charitable organizations such as Biglife, STARability Foundation, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and his church. His personalized approach to cultivating relationships earned the Kurtz name recognition and esteem throughout Southwest Florida.

Reflecting on his retirement, Randy expressed gratitude for the support of his family, employees, clients, and the community, acknowledging their integral role in shaping Kurtz Homes Naples into what it is today. He plans to focus on enjoying the fruits of his labor, embracing a well-earned retirement alongside his wife, Kim, and addressing some personal health issues. “I am so fortunate

that this is not a stepping down of any kind,” said Randy. “I am simply stepping to the side to give my family the opportunity to continue the path that my father and I paved. This is the future I had prayed for and prepared for. What a blessing it is to see this legacy continue.”

In his place, David Gordon, Randy’s son-in-law and president of Kurtz Homes Naples for the past two years, fully assumes the company leadership. David’s journey within the company, from a college intern to his current role, defines his deep understanding of its values and operations. Among other achievements, David expanded the company’s renovation division significantly during the pandemic. His strong client relationships not only sustained operations but also facilitated substantial growth in the renovation sector, surpassing mere survival to achieve genuine progress. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, David became a pillar in the company, exemplifying the true essence of a leader with his hands-on, caring approach.

Kurtz Homes Naples only accepts a select few clients a year, dedicating their full attention to each home’s unique style and individual nuances. “As the leader of Kurtz Homes Naples, I embrace the opportunity to infuse our 43-year tenure with new vitality and a new perspective to reshape our identity in the industry,” said David Gordon. “Our approach is not just about constructing houses; it’s about crafting relationships and generational homes firmly set in Naples’ rich history. Guided by the wisdom of those before me and their standard of excellence in the construction industry, the culmination of experiences, education, and invaluable mentorships from Randy and leaders in the community, I am blessed to continue on the path God orchestrated for me to help direct the future of our company.”

As Randy steps into retirement, his departure marks the end

of an iconic era. His legacy, deeply rooted from the sands of Port Royal to the center of the city, is a testament to the power of dreams and the profound impact of one man’s vision. With each home he built, Randy not only shaped the landscape but also touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving behind an imprint that will be cherished and remembered for lifetimes to come in the hearts of those who call Naples, home.

In 1999, Mike embarked on his entrepreneurial venture by founding Waterside Builders. Haute Living Naples sits down with Mike Assaad to learn more about Waterside Builders and the luxury home building market in Naples.

Haute Living (HL): What inspired you to specialize in luxury home building in Naples? Did you always want to get into building from a young age?

Mike Assaad (MA): I studied finance in college, so initially, I had no plans to enter this field. However, I returned to work with my father, who owned a small development company. At one point, one of our projects involved a couple of hundred single-family homes. To keep it in-house, we decided to start our own construction company in the late ‘90s. This evolved into a custom home business based on location and neighborhood demands, and we’ve been fortunate to continue in this direction in Naples. Although I studied finance, I learned the job hands-on. You don’t need to know everything, like plumbing, but honesty, thoroughness, and hard work are essential for success.

HL: Where were you born and raised?

MA: I’m from Naples, Florida, and I’ve lived here my whole life—over 50 years. I went to school and college here, got married here, and my

HAUTE LIVING NAPLES 50

family and kids are raised here. We’re Neapolitans through and through.

HL: What inspired you to specialize in luxury homebuilding?

MA: The market direction played a significant role. There was a demand for luxury homes, so we transitioned out of smaller projects. We’ve had success in the residential sector and have been lucky to work in good neighborhoods.

HL: Can you describe your company’s core values?

MA: Transparency is key. We stress the importance of a good relationship between us and our clients, as we’ll be working closely for two to three years. It’s about managing expectations and being proactive in communication.

HL: How big is your team?

MA: We have around four main employees. We’re a smaller, more boutique firm.

HL: Have you seen an increase in business since the pandemic?

MA: Yes, we’ve gotten busier. Everything takes longer due to labor shortages and supply chain issues. We used to complete 10-12 homes a year; now, it’s about 12-15, and they take about two years each.

HL: How do you overcome challenges like supply chain issues?

MA: It’s about being reasonable and understanding. We’re all facing similar challenges, so it’s important to work through them patiently and collaboratively.

HL: What’s your vision for the future of luxury living in Naples?

MA: The luxury market will likely continue to thrive due to the high demand for housing here. We’re in a fortunate position geographically and marketwise.

HL: What sets your company apart from other luxury builders in Naples?

MA: Our boutique size and personalized service set us apart. We also bring value by advising where to spend money effectively, based on our experience with both spec and custom homes.

HL: Can you share a unique project that exemplifies your company’s approach?

MA: We’re working on a unique project on 10th Avenue South and

Gordon Drive, preserving two older structures and building a new house to create a compound. It’s a challenging and exciting project that showcases our ability to adapt and innovate.

HL: Any advice for someone considering building a luxury home in Naples?

MA: Start by gathering ideas and preferences in a file or folder to help communicate your vision effectively. For inspiration, you can use Instagram or Pinterest—any platform to collect what catches your eye. This way, when you meet with a designer or an architect, you’re not going in blind. You have a general direction for how you want things to proceed.

It is important to know your preferences, like if you’re into contemporary, high-gloss finishes, you wouldn’t go for rustic shaker doors. It gives a head start and helps expedite the process.

Renowned for unparalleled craftsmanship, innovation, and personalized service, BCB Homes has become synonymous with the epitome of luxury living in our vibrant coastal community. At the helm is CEO Joe Smallwood, whose leadership continues to guide the company’s strategic direction. Having built some of the most prestigious estates in Naples, BCB Homes is celebrated for its ability to transform dreams into reality, crafting residences that redefine luxury living. In this exclusive interview with Haute Living, we are given a unique opportunity to explore the collaborative vision behind BCB Homes, including insights into the company’s core values, sustainability practices, and commitment to exceeding client expectations—a testament to the collective drive of the company founders, President Greg Brisson, and the senior executive team.

Haute Living (HL): What inspired you to specialize in luxury home building in Naples?

Greg Brisson (GB): I’ve been immersed in the luxury home construction industry from a young age. My early exposure to the business, particularly during my high school years while working alongside my father, solidified my interest in architecture, prompting me to pursue it academically. After completing my studies in architecture, I returned to Naples to join my father’s firm. While my career path veered towards construction about 18 years ago, my enthusiasm for creating bespoke luxury homes remained steadfast. I thrive on the challenge of crafting unique residences that not only fulfill but surpass our clients’ visions, setting new benchmarks in home design.

HL: Describe your company’s core values and how they translate into the homes you build.

GB: Our core values of Honesty, Integrity, Communication, Passion, and Innovation are not just words displayed in our lobbies; they are our guiding principles. These values shape our actions and drive our

decisions, serving as the foundation for our company and our team. We infuse them into every aspect of our work, whether serving our clients, collaborating with colleagues, or contributing to our community. With these core values at the forefront, we approach each project with purpose and commitment, ensuring excellence in all that we do.

HL: What is your vision for the future of luxury living in Naples?

GB: Naples will always be a destination for luxury living. Our community offers a blend of relaxation and sophistication, with waterfront properties, upscale amenities, pristine beaches, renowned golf courses, and abundant boating opportunities. For clients drawn to this pinnacle of luxury living, personalization is paramount. They seek residences that reflect their individuality and taste. Like the beauty of Naples itself, luxury living is not just a trend – it’s a lifestyle that will perpetually captivate those with discerning tastes.

HL: How does your company approach sustainability in its construction practices?

GB: At BCB Homes, we take pride in crafting heirloom properties that stand as enduring legacies for generations to come – homes that will be passed on to children and grandchildren. Our homes are meticulously built to withstand the tests of time and nature, embodying unmatched quality, longevity, and resilience.

HL: What sets your company apart from other luxury builders in Naples?

GB: The company was started as a luxury homebuilder and has remained true to that vision and mission. With more than 30 years of experience, BCB Homes has never built the same home twice. Another key differentiator is our new Employee Ownership Program launched in 2023. With 38 employee-owners alongside the six founding partners, this program directly contributes to our company’s strength and commitment to quality. It empowers our employees and makes them more invested in the company’s success, which lays a solid foundation for BCB Homes’ future growth. We continue to refine our building methods and innovative practices, and we always aim to set new standards of excellence for our clients and our team.

HL: Can you share a unique project that exemplifies your company’s distinctive approach?

GB: BCB Homes is proud to highlight a landmark project that underscores our commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. Located on a peninsula, this project presented unique challenges, including installing over 60 marine pilings and managing work around tidal changes, emphasizing our adaptability and precision.

This residence stands as a marvel of modern engineering and design, featuring a flat commercial-style roof, extensive drainage systems connected to city lines, and a contemporary aesthetic with large windows and a two-story glass wall for unobstructed views. Building directly over the water, we implemented specialized techniques such as suspended scaffolding and turbidity curtains to protect the bay, showcasing our dedication to sustainability. The home’s design and execution highlight our ability to merge luxury with the natural environment, offering residents the sensation of living on a luxury yacht. This project not only reflects BCB Homes’ excellence in luxury home building but also our innovative approach to overcoming the challenges of constructing in complex environments.

HL: How do you personalize the building experience for each client?

GB: Every house, client, and project is unique. That’s why we tailor each building experience to meet the specific plans and goals of our clients.

We assign a dedicated team and ensure consistent communication by involving a project executive from start to finish. We prioritize this relationship, embracing the opportunity to collaborate with our clients to bring their visions to life. If you can dream it, we can build it!

HL: What role does technology play in your construction process and how does it benefit clients?

GB: Technology is critical to every aspect of the homebuilding and renovation process, from the office to the field. One unique aspect of BCB Homes is our Building Science Department, which elevates construction technology to new heights. This dedicated team inspects all of our projects meticulously, ensuring that each home meets BCB Homes’ standards of quality and is healthy, safe, and protected against environmental factors.

HL: How do you stay ahead of the curve in terms of design trends and building materials?

GB: For starters, we work with incredible industry partners. The architects, interior designers, manufacturers, and artisans we collaborate with play a vital role in bringing our projects to life. Together, we strive to create homes that blend contemporary design elements and timeless components, ensuring that every residence is as beautiful as it is comfortable, resulting in homes that stand the test of time with grace and distinction.

HL: What is the most rewarding aspect of building luxury homes for your clients?

GB: At BCB Homes, while we craft fine residences, the most rewarding aspect is the lasting relationships we establish with our clients and their families, which far exceed the tangible process of construction.

HL: What advice would you give to someone considering building a luxury home in Naples?

GB: My recommendation for anyone looking to construct a luxury home in Naples is to assemble the ideal team tailored to their family’s needs. It’s essential to carefully select the architect, interior designer, landscape architect, and especially the builder, to form an excellent team. Designing and building a custom home is a deeply personal journey that requires a substantial investment of time. Hence, having the right team in place is crucial for success.

With Naples as their base and primary work area, they have undertaken a spectrum of distinguished projects integral to the community fabric. Among their notable endeavors are the Vine Room, Ankrolab, Shelter for Abused Women and Children, The Naples Jet Center, The Naples Players Theater Renovation, Naples Aesthetic Institute, multiple YMCA(s), and the Baker Senior Center Naples. Each undertaking reflects BUILD’s unwavering dedication to excellence and their ability to meet the diverse needs of Naples’ discerning homeowners.

Complementing their local projects is BUILD’s prestigious real estate portfolio, showcasing properties in esteemed neighborhoods including Marco Island, Royal Harbor, Old Naples, Aqualane, Port Royal, Moorings, Park Shore, Seagate, Pelican Bay, Pine Ridge, Grey Oaks, Mediterra, Talis Park, and Sanibel. From waterfront estates to exclusive retreats, BUILD has established a profound presence in Naples’ luxury real estate market. “Sustainable Innovation: Where Luxury Meets Responsibility”

BUILD acknowledges the vital role of environmental responsibility in crafting these exquisite havens. They tailor their approach to sustainability for each client, offering innovative options and detailing their costs and benefits. Their experience in building a LEED Platinum home, such as their groundbreaking project in Manasota Key, positions them as leaders in sustainable luxury living and underscores their commitment to innovation. This project sought to blend the environment with the home and incorporated a solar array on the roof that charged Tesla Wall packs, a cistern to capture the water, window design to reduce heat loads, among many other innovative components. This was all done while also creating a visually appealing and unique aesthetic with exposed concrete and beautiful raw materials. This dedication to ecological responsibility resonates with homeowners and commercial clients who desire homes and spaces that are not only luxurious but also leave a positive footprint. “We believe in empowering our clients with informed choices,” Bill emphasized, “Sustainability doesn’t diminish luxury; it elevates it. With the right approach, we can create homes and commercial spaces that are both aesthetically captivating and environmentally responsible.”

BUILDing Legacies, One Exquisite Project at a Time

For Gaston, the ultimate reward lies in client referrals - a testament to the trust and satisfaction they cultivate. Witnessing the joy on a client’s face as they step into their finished masterpiece is the true validation of their efforts. “There’s nothing more rewarding than a client referring us to someone else,” Gaston shares. “It’s an incredible honor and what we strive for every day. The Eclectic Eight:

MHK’s Architectural Marvels Redefine 8th Street Naples

BLENDING MODERN DESIGN WITHIN NAPLES’ HISTORICAL context is the essence of Naples Eclectic, according to Matthew Kragh, the visionary architect behind the transformation of the 8th Street corridor. His approach? Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of sources, including the legacy of the Sarasota School of Architecture led by Paul Rudolph, which has indelibly influenced Naples despite the loss of many of its structures. “The midcentury modern movement of the 1950s and 60s has also left its mark, with a handful of homes still adorning Old Naples,” Matthew explains. “In combination with the early 20th-century Florida Cracker style an d Mediterranean Revival, these architectural influences provide

a rich tapestry for my design concepts.” His objective? To create spaces that seamlessly blend with their surroundings while also enriching the community fabric.

“The 8th Street corridor acts as a canvas for innovation and imagination, showcasing Naples’ architectural heritage while embracing progress,” Matthew emphasizes.

This collaborative spirit and commitment to architectural excellence have resulted in a vibrant streetscape that reflects Naples’ evolving identity. Join us as we explore the architectural gems that line the 8th Street corridor, each a testament to the city’s enduring charm and creativity.

850 Central: Developed by Chip Youmans of Platinum Developments, 850 Central presents a modern touch to Naples. “The design was highly influenced by Chip’s vision, featuring dynamic retail spaces on the corner and thoughtfully designed residential units on the upper levels,” remarks Matthew Kragh, the architect behind the transformation. A standout feature is the rooftop sunset deck, offering residents panoramic views of the city. The building’s clever 2nd-floor pool area adds to its allure, while the large storefronts and trellis features create a captivating presence, especially at night.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MHK

Stella: Named after the developer’s daughter, Stella, by Bill Yeomans Jr. of the Augusterra Group, it stands as a sleek mixed-use building. “One of the design challenges was balancing commercial prominence with residential privacy due to its frontage on US41,” notes Kragh. The solution was to step the building back from the street on the upper floor, creating a void that offers luxury condo units a respite from the views of the street. With its steel trowel stucco and quarry stone accents, Stella makes a modern statement while still harmonizing with its surroundings.

Soce Flats: Developed by Mike Assaad, and the first installment on the corridor, Soce Flats, reflects the flair of the Coastal Contemporary of Old Naples houses but to a scale appropriate for a larger mixeduse building. “The architectural metalwork mimics the horizontal movement of lap siding, while Coastal Contemporary brackets create a clearly identified entrance to the building, blending modernity with timeless coastal charm,” says Kragh. The transient units are small, approximately 900 square feet, and include a small amenity pool on the south side of the project.

FEATURE

The Mark: Developed by the late Adam Smith, his vision for the project was a series of architectural gables that make a bold statement along the length of the façade. “It’s dynamic outdoor living areas with Old Florida appointed ceilings and rafter tails are glazed in a subtle blue texture that brings the adjacent waters of the Gulf to life,” observes Kragh. The mixture of condominiums and larger-scale transient units, along with the luxurious pool and amenity area at the back of the building, make The Mark a truly captivating addition to the corridor.

Cayden of Olde Naples: An adaptive reuse project by Coastal Companies of Florida, Cayden of Olde Naples transforms an existing three-story office structure into luxury condominiums. “Reflecting the British West Indies architectural influence, the building seamlessly blends oldworld charm with modern luxury,” states Kragh. The project also incorporates new retail frontage and a resort pool as a large addition to the existing structure. The building is a great testament to eclectic architectural movements and reflects the success of other local projects.

Two Ten West: Developed by Chip Youmans of Platinum Developments, Two Ten West offers a contemporary pattern of well-articulated facades and dramatic architectural features. With 12 luxury residences above covered parking and retail space, the project boasts an expansive view corridor over a second-level pool area, welcoming in the natural Florida sunlight. The frontage has a great rhythm of architecture with well-articulated facades in a contemporary pattern. Large overhangs, trellis features, and dramatic ceiling work contribute to the stunning architectural composition of Two Ten West.

Fine Mark Bank Building: Another creation by Adam Smith and Chip VanMeter, the FineMark Bank Building was constructed by the seamless team of BUILD LLC. While small in scale, the building is a marvel of detail. “It’s contemporary play on Old Florida brackets ties the second and third stories together in a dynamic fashion, while its expansive outdoor living areas encourage indoor-outdoor living. Ceilings detail the aesthetics of the building; from the streetscape, they are in a forced perspective and give a dynamic texture to the architecture. Stunning metalwork, glass railings, and tabby stucco accents add to the building’s visual appeal, blending modern sophistication with coastal charm. The building also features a FineMark branch on the ground level, private garage spaces, and two luxury residential units above.”

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MHK

The Huxley: Perhaps Matt’s favorite addition to the corridor is the future home of The Huxley, developed by Bill Yeomans Jr. of the Augusterra Group. The Huxley epitomizes luxury living on 8th Street South. Boasting a Neapolitan dream and strictly a residential project with eight exceptionally luxurious condominium units - each condo unit includes a private pool, elevator, and private entrance. Also on site, a man cave garage that holds from 6 to 8 cars along the rear alleyway. The Huxley sets a new standard for upscale living in Naples. Architecturally, the building blends elements of the Dutch West Indies with Coastal Contemporary flair, creating a striking and elegant aesthetic that captures the essence of modern luxury. “Architecturally speaking, the Huxley is one of my favorite MHK projects,” Matthew adds, “There is a real elegant push and play of the balconies, the building massing and the architectural elements.”

“Though every project is a challenge, the 8th Street corridor was an amazing opportunity,” Matthew reflects. “It presented itself as a blank slate over the past decade. I am extremely honored to have designed nearly every building on these four city blocks in the past decade. Each building took upon its own character, reflecting the desires of a diverse set of clientele. Each project required very strict city approvals and had to meet the standard of very stringent Florida Building Codes.” As for the impact of the revitalization of 8th Street on the local community and economy, Matthew notes, “Several years ago, the City’s CRA dedicated funds to redevelop the streetscape of the 8th Street corridor. This included several new roundabouts or traffic circles and some amazing pedestrian improvements. Along with this new architecture, this district will become an amazing connector for residents who live near the hospital, creating a connection to our main street, 5th Avenue South. The corridor becomes a respite for those trying to avoid US41 and those who want to navigate a more traditional neighborhood. The rooftops within the new buildings will help support the local shops and restaurants in the area. They will help reduce traffic congestion as these residents will walk to the

activity center promoting blue zones and an elegant Naples lifestyle.”

Dating back to its origin, MHK Architecture emerged during the recession, following Matthew’s 14-year tenure with another local firm. Matthew recognized an opportunity in the face of crisis, drawing inspiration from the Chinese notion where “crisis” translates to “opportunity.” He seized the moment to establish MHK with a simple goal: to design homes in Old Naples. The initial projects catalyzed a movement toward architectural elegance in Naples, ultimately shaping the eclectic style we embrace today. As opportunities within the Naples market expanded, so did the MHK brand, now spanning nine additional markets. With ten office locations and a team of 128 talented staff members, each office has nurtured remarkable talent. “We’ve reached a pivotal moment where we’re beginning to integrate stylistic elements from one region to another, enriching our eclectic approach to architecture even further,” Matthew shares. From sleek modern designs to timeless coastal retreats, the 8th Street corridor and the city of Naples stand as a testament and legacy to the enduring charm and architectural creativity of the talented team of MHK.

SETTING A NEW STANDARD

Discover the 2024 Louis Vuitton high watchmaking novelties.

IN EARLY MARCH, MAJOR NEWS CAME OUT OF LA FABRIQUE DU Temps Louis Vuitton as the Maison revealed the 2024 High Watchmaking Novelties. With seven new timepieces making their debut, one common theme is woven throughout the collection: the art of watchmaking. From the exquisite range of Métiers d’art on the dials to new techniques and artist collaborations, the artistry of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton has set a new precedent in the horological world.

TAMBOUR MOON FLYING TOURBILLON “POINÇON DE GENÈVE” SAPPHIRE FRANK GEHRY

Louis Vuitton has always been a major proponent of the arts, so it comes as no surprise that La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton and renowned architect Frank Gehry have furthered their longstanding collaboration with a timepiece. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Louis Vuitton store in Seoul — two of Gehry’s most celebrated projects — this timepiece stands as a testament to unparalleled architectural beauty. Crafted with complete transparency, the watch offers a clear view of the sophisticated flying tourbillon movement, meticulously produced, and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton and distinguished by the prestigious “Poinçon de Genève” seal.

LOUIS VUITTON ESCALE CABINET OF WONDERS

Echoing the same dedication to the arts as the Tambour Moon Flying Tourbillon “Poinçon de Genève” Sapphire Frank Gehry, the new trilogy of Louis Vuitton Escale watches charts the brand’s voyage through artisan craftsmanship, with each piece serving as a horological work of art on the dial. This trio of limited-edition timepieces — Dragon’s Cloud, Koï’s Garden, and Snake’s Jungle — draws inspiration from Gaston-Louis Vuitton’s private collections of rare objects, including antique tsubas (highly decorated Japanese katana sword guards).

LOUIS VUITTON TAMBOUR SLIM VIVIENNE JUMPING HOURS SAKURA AND ASTRONAUT

Taking inspiration from the Vivienne, a motif created in 2017 and derived from the signature Monogram Flower, the two new jumping hour watches — Sakura Vivienne and Astronaut Vivienne — are a testament to the Maison’s skill in combining the inventive jumping hour mechanism with the intricate art of advanced watchmaking. The Tambour Slim Vivienne Jumping Hours Astronaut is equipped with the LV 180 Caliber, an automatic mechanical movement with a unique double aperture jumping hour complication, meticulously developed, and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Encased in 18K white gold and adorned with brilliant and rosecut diamonds, this exquisite timepiece boasts an aventurine dial that is complemented by a blue Taurillon leather strap.

VOYAGER FLYING TOURBILLON “POINÇON DE GENÈVE” PLIQUE-À-JOUR

Perhaps the more futuristic of all the novelties, the Voyager Flying Tourbillon “Poinçon de Genève” Plique-À-Jour is a contemporary stained-glass masterpiece that showcases the flawless flying tourbillon movement crafted at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, and is adorned with the esteemed “Poinçon de Genève” seal. As Louis Vuitton often does to create something modern, it looks back. Louis Vuitton revives the intricate “plique-à-jour” technique, a method without backing that dates back to Byzantine artisans, choosing the exceptionally difficult Western “percé” method for its Voyager watch dial, transforming it into a miniature, modern stained-glass artwork through meticulous enamel application. The result is a technical marvel that offers unparalleled clarity and luminosity, featuring a white gold dial adorned with interlocking Vs and a captivating gradient of blues, and showcasing a fresh and luminous reinterpretation of this ancient craft.

A NEW SONG

Audemars Piguet taps watch aficionado John Mayer to design a new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar.

“MY FAVORITE WATCHES HAVE DIALS THAT YOU CAN ENDLESSLY stare at. A great watch dial feels like a picture window — you look into it, not at it. In the case of this QP, it’s like looking up at a moonless sky. There is a true sense of nature in it. And when you couple that sense of depth and vastness with the complication of a perpetual calendar, it is a very powerful combination of technical prowess and esthetic design,” notes John Mayer on his new creation with Audemars Piguet. As I was poking through the release of the new timepiece, one thing remained clear to me: Mayer’s deep connection to timepieces and their intricacies almost mirror his deep connection to the lyrics in his [many] acclaimed songs. Mayer’s passions run deep, and it couldn’t be clearer in his collaboration design of the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar equipped with the AP self-winding Caliber 5134.

As a long-time friend of AP, a watch enthusiast, and now the “Creative Conduit” for the brand, Mayer has combined his knack and fascination for timepieces with the esteemed heritage of AP to partner on the new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” Limited Edition, produced in only 200 copies.

At the surface, the watch is simply stunning with a dynamic dial that echoes Mayer’s sentiment on the dial becoming a “picture window,” combining 18K white gold with a new “Crystal Sky” dial in a range of blue hues. Mayer closely collaborated with the AP design teams to craft this dial, and through meticulous craftsmanship, the intricate pattern was formed atom by atom via electroforming. In this exclusive edition, the motif is presented in a rich blue hue using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), enhancing its depth and luminosity, while subdials and calendar indications offer functional elegance against the textured backdrop.

To improve the overall legibility, Mayer also introduced subtle modifications to the perpetual calendar display. For example,

the “31” of the date subdial is usually red on modern Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar models, but this time, it is printed in white. Also, the two numerals of the “31” are now smaller in size and slightly stepped to distinguish them from the adjacent “1.” He also selected a lighter blue shade for the week indicator that “could fall back into the dial when simply reading the time but could easily be found when looking to read the week complication,” as he explains. And for the first time, the “Swiss Made” inscription is printed in white at the bottom of the moon phase subdial rather than on the dial’s outer edge at six o’clock.

The Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” Limited Edition will also be the last limited edition equipped with the brand’s selfwinding perpetual calendar movement, Caliber 5134, marking the end to a legendary history that began over 45 years ago. Today, Caliber 5134 ensures accurate date tracking, accommodating leap years and requiring manual correction only once in 2100, while boasting a frequency of 2.75 Hz and a 40-hour power reserve. The caliber is shown through the sapphire caseback, revealing intricate decorations such as Côtes de Genève and a rhodium-toned 22-carat pink gold openworked oscillating weight adorned with Audemars Piguet’s signature Tapisserie motif.

For Mayer, there is no higher complication: “For me, the perpetual calendar is the ultimate complication, the benchmark for high horology, and though there are complications that are more complex, the historical footing of the QP in the history of watchmaking is what makes it stand out. Caliber 5134 will go down in history as one that defined an era of watch collecting — and public enthusiasm at large — for a complication that had not enjoyed that kind of attention and desire before,” he notes.

TAG Heuer partners with Malbon Golf for an exclusive connected watch.

TAG HEUER HAS MADE A MODERN MATCH AS IT TEAMS UP WITH MALBON Golf to unveil the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 45mm x Malbon Golf Edition. This collaboration marks a significant moment in the world of golfing timepieces, blending TAG Heuer’s pioneering spirit in luxury connected watches with Malbon Golf’s innovative approach to golf fashion.

Since its foray into the connected watch space in 2015, TAG Heuer has established itself as a frontrunner, particularly with the golfing community, thanks to the Connected Calibre E4 Golf Edition launched in 2022. The partnership with Malbon Golf, a brand that has quickly become synonymous with a creative and lifestyle-oriented approach to golf since its inception in 2017, heralds a fresh perspective on golfing apparel and accessories.

Redefining golf culture (and style, for that matter), the watch is equipped with the TAG Heuer Golf application, serving as a wrist-worn caddie that tracks shots, recommends clubs, and provides distance information — all without interrupting the game. With over 650,000 users, the application embodies a new era of golfing, where technology enhances the experience without overshadowing the essence of the game.

The design of the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E4 45mm x Malbon Golf Edition speaks volumes about its golfing pedigree. It features a bezel marked with 18 points, representing each hole of a golf course, and showcases a vibrant mix of colors inspired by Malbon Golf’s branding. The lightweight Titan Grade II case with DLC coating, alongside the rubber and calfskin strap, underscores the watch’s readiness on and off the course.

This limited-edition watch introduces two unique watch faces, bringing the collaboration to life right on the wrist. The primary face displays the co-branded logo and an animated design, while the second draws inspiration from the iconic Heuer 02 design. The packaging further celebrates the partnership, with vibrant colors and co-branded logos adorning the box, complemented by additional straps and golf balls featuring the collaboration’s logo.

Expanding beyond the watch itself, TAG Heuer and Malbon have also collaborated on a capsule collection of golf-inspired merchandise, from performancefocused apparel to club covers, ultimately perfecting the ideal golf look.

2024 Aston Martin DB12

007 Never Had It So Good.

YOU LIKELY NOTICED THAT ASTON MARTIN HAS HAD A LONG RUN of cars starting with “DB.” That designation came from David Brown, the owner of the company from 1947. The company’s lineup has included a “DB”-branded car for more than 75 years.

The one-off, so to speak, in the run of numbers was the DB10 which, as it turns out, was made in very limited production (only ten units) for use in the 2014 James Bond film Spectre. That was quite the homage to a fifty-year collaboration between the James Bond films and the storied car manufacturer (the first such alliance being the DB5 in the 1964 film Goldfinger). Not long thereafter, the DB11 was announced, and it was a stunner. Large clamshell hood (all one piece with upper fenders attached, opening forward), as svelte as it was fast. So how to improve on that, which surprisingly has been around for over ten years? Behold the DB12.

This newest iteration of the Aston road kings — dubbed by them as the “World’s First Super Tourer” — is even more sculptural than its predecessor. It’s a gorgeous machine but, even more surprisingly, it’s quicker, quieter, and even more comfortable than the DB11 that

it replaces. It even was named car of the year by a prestigious car magazine, beating out the McLaren Artura and the Bentley Flying Spur Speed.

So, what does it take to create such a winner? Starting with the V8 motor, the DB12 has over 670 horsepower with 590 pound feet of torque, potent enough to motivate this big touring machine (weighing about two tons) from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds. The twin-turbo engine is mated to a very slick eight-speed transmission — an automatic trans — which can be driven in manual mode with the paddle shifters. Thoughtfully, there’s even an exhaust-sound adjustment button and several driving modes — GT, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Wet. Needless to say, my normal start-up sequence includes the loud button, choosing the Sport+ mode, selecting the manual transmission and reducing (or completely turning off) the traction-control switch.

As a long-time devotee of the brand, I can say that Astons present several delights, including their sinuous lines and sleek, sumptuous curves. When opening the door, you get to experience the wafting

HAUTE LIVING NAPLES 64

sweet fragrance of premium leather and marvel at the beautiful tooling that presents interesting designs. Sliding into the driver’s seat, you feel coddled, almost like wearing a custom suit that’s well-made and fitted. And when firing up the motor, you can’t wait to drive off, at one with the machine, loving the ergonomics, sound, and speed.

While this two-plus-two (which, as usual, has a small back seat) coupe is heavier than many sports cars, the performance is impressive. With an impressive a top speed just north of 200 miles per hour, what struck me most was the way the car rode so smoothly, especially on uneven surfaces, and then handled through the corners like a slot car. No doubt, the 22-inch wheels help, but the new adaptive dampers and first-of-its-kind Aston e-differential get most of the credit. When added to the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 S tires (developed specifically for the DB12) that include what’s become de rigueur — noise-cancelling foam inserts inside each tire — the DB12’s road-going manners are awesome. Often, power and performance are the enemy of calm and comfort, and vice versa, but this latest Aston does both so well that it truly is a grand tourer.

Another major improvement over the DB11 is that this newer model has its own switchgear, rather than having it come from the MercedesBenz parts bin, as Aston had done for many years. The result is that everything each driver touches is metal or leather-wrapped and feels substantial and luxurious. The new transmission seems slicker and smoother-shifting than the earlier version and the lower rear-end gearing makes for a quicker response time when accelerating. “My” DB12 had the optional Bowers & Wilkins 15-speaker 1,170-watt sound system, which added to the aural delights, especially as the car can be quiet enough to really enjoy the music, be it Billy Joel, Aaron Copland, Robbie Williams, The Fugs, or Blodwyn Pig (now that’s a playlist!)

As a side note, at press time for this story, I also was able to enjoy the drop-top version of this fine machine, the DB12 Volante, but that’s a tale for another time since the information embargo imposed on the Volante extends until after this article goes to press. Stay tuned, though, as it’s a real stunner.

I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you may not agree with my raves about the design of the DB12, but when coupled with exemplary performance, comfort, world-class handling, and more, the DB12 coupe is one of the top grand touring cars made today — a Super Tourer indeed.

SPRING 2024

Spring 2024: Embracing Simplicity, Sophistication, and Natural Elegance

ALL WHITE

White is here to stay and will never go out of style. The “All White” trend signifies a move towards minimalism, embracing an ethereal and clean aesthetic. This trend is not just about color (or the lack thereof) but about the texture, fabric, and silhouettes that speak to sophistication and simplicity. From crisp linen suits to flowing chiffon dresses, the all-white ensemble offers a canvas for highlighting the natural beauty of the materials and the person wearing it. Whether it’s for a casual daytime look or a chic evening event, an all-white outfit makes a bold, fresh statement without the need for vibrant colors or patterns.

TRENDS AT MARISSA COLLECTIONS

The Spring 2024 fashion season marks a distinct shift towards simplicity, innovation, and elegance, with trends that seem to effortlessly blend tradition with the avant-garde. Here are the standout themes for Spring 2024 that each bring a unique flavor to the fashion landscape, offering a fresh perspective on style and self-expression.

NOVELTY

On the flip side, the “Novelty” trend brings an element of surprise and whimsy into Spring 2024’s fashion narrative. This trend is characterized by unique textures, unexpected color combinations, and innovative designs that challenge traditional fashion norms. Designers are experimenting with new materials and playing with proportions to create pieces that are both artistic and wearable. Novelty items often become the centerpiece of an outfit, offering a way for individuals to express their creativity and individuality.

BALLET

“Balletcore” stormed the Spring 2024 runways embracing femininity and giving off a girly aesthetic allowing you to be your own inner child and dance the night away. The “Ballet” trend captures the grace and fluidity of dance, infusing it into everyday wear with a touch of elegance and poise. Balletinspired fashion includes soft pastels, tulle skirts, wrap tops, and flats that echo the attire of dancers. The ballet trend is both romantic and powerful, offering a nuanced take on femininity that is both strong and soft.

LILAC

Don soft shades of purple to add a delicate and dreamy aesthetic to your wardrobe. Lilac offers a fresh and lively hue with the soft quality of the pastel that evokes feelings of renewal and optimism. This soft yet vibrant color pairs well with both neutral and bold colors. Incorporating lilac into your wardrobe can be as simple as adding a lilac accessory to an outfit for a pop of color or embracing the trend more fully with a lilac dress or suit. The key to wearing lilac is to balance it with the rest of your outfit, whether you’re aiming for a subtle touch of color or making a bold statement with a head-to-toe lilac ensemble.

FLORAL

Floral gives the essence of rejuvenation and rebirth, reflecting the blooming of nature during the spring season. Floral patterns dominated the runways with new interpretations and designs with designers experimenting with the scale, playing with oversized floral prints, and creating intricate, detailed micro-floral patterns. The color palette ranged from pastel hues that echo the softness of spring to vivid and bold colors that make a statement. Textile techniques, including embroidery, appliqué, and digital printing, created depth and texture on garments.

Together, these trends for Spring 2024 offer a diverse palette for personal expression. Whether through the serenity of all-white, the playful creativity of novelty, the elegant fluidity of ballet-inspired pieces, playing with color with hues of yellow and lilac, and mixing it up with floral pieces, this season invites fashion enthusiasts to explore new horizons and express their unique identity through apparel, accessories, jewelry, handbags, and footwear.

Chef Alex Trim’s Culinary Journey and Digital Influence

Michelin-trained Chef Alex Trim is a Naples local paving the way for chefs as social media influencers where he inspires Michelin-star level cooking from your own home.

HAUTE LIVING NAPLES SITS DOWN WITH CHEF ALEX TRIM TO discuss his love for cooking, his inspiration, and how he is trailblazing the way for chefs to influence, educate, and connect within the digital world.

Chef Alex Trim grew up just north of London in a tiny village called Potters Bar in Hertfordshire, England. He lived next door to his grandparents for a long time, so he spent a lot of time with them. Trim’s mother is a classical French cuisine trained chef, so food has been a part of his life since he was a young child.

“My mom cooked every night, and we were fortunate to have enjoyable family meals together,” reflected Trim. “Not everyone has that experience, so I feel grateful for those memories with my mom.”

His favorite meal his mom cooks to this day is a traditional English Sunday roast with roast beef, turkey, or chicken, mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding that is great for mopping up all the gravy. His earliest food-related memories, which he cherishes to this day involved standing on the countertop with his mom and

cooking alongside her when he was very young. His first memory of actual food is from his grandfather’s garden in England where he grew tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, and plums.

“The fresh produce was incredible,” Trim reflects. “His greenhouse tomatoes were out of this world, and he even grew these tiny French strawberries called Fraise des bois. They were less than a centimeter in size but bursting with flavor. Cucumbers, especially, became my favorite food because of how my grandfather grew them—they were unlike anything else I’d ever tasted.”

Trim knew from a young age that being a chef was his calling. Trim’s journey in the United States began when his family moved to North Carolina when he was 14 due to wanting a change of pace.

“It has been 18 years since we moved,” says Trim. “It was the idea of the American way of life. It was a new experience, and they wanted me to have the possibility of growing up with the opportunities that America offers.”

Trim has worked in professional kitchens for about 16-17 years.

HAUTE LIVING NAPLES 98

PHOTOS OF ALEX TRIM

Trim reflects that the restaurant industry is tough, both for owners and chefs, due to slim margins, but that never deterred him. Now, the ambitious chef is exploring different avenues within the culinary world to see where his background can take him.

“I’ve missed countless important events because of work obligations,” comments Trim. “I’ve worked long hours in Michelin-starred restaurants, sometimes making very little money, but it’s been for the love of the craft and the learning experience. Rather than attending culinary school, I learned through hands-on experience in various restaurants.”

Trim worked in restaurants until 2020 and then moved into private dining, where he was the private chef for a family in Miami for about six days a week for almost two years.

How did his social media career begin and take off? During the pandemic, there was a four-month period when he lived in Chicago, and everywhere in the city shut down due to stringent COVID restrictions. Trim was at home for four months, then one morning, he woke up and decided, “You know what? Today, I’m going to make breakfast and film myself doing it, and that’s it.”

He made a simple breakfast, starting with a fried egg and some salsa, and just filmed it without much editing and put it up on his Instagram story, thinking, “Whatever.”

Following the post, many people reached out to him and said, “This is amazing. Please keep doing this.”

During the pandemic, Trim posted cooking videos daily for four months, receiving positive feedback. After returning to work postlockdown, he stopped posting, viewing it as just a hobby. Years later, inspired by successful social media personalities, he decided to pursue social media more seriously, aiming to differentiate himself.

“Most of the big food creators out there use gimmicks, humor, or clever editing,” comments Trim. “None of them focus on just highquality, classic, beautiful food. I had been thinking for a long time that I wanted to do this differently.”

In January 2023, Trim parted ways with his private chef position and realized it was time to start doing social media full-time and put everything he had into it. Trim thought to himself, “If I am going to doing something, I am going to do it as well as I physically can, and it’s going to become my obsession.”

So, in the middle of February, after planning and figuring out what he was going to do, he posted his first Reel on Instagram. His second Reel got about 2.1 million views. His first viral post was a French toast recipe. A week after Trim posted, he was on vacation in Japan, and his Instagram following just started blowing up and took off overnight. But with social media, not every video goes viral straight away.

“For example, there’s a post I put out yesterday that only had 20,000 views by the end of the day, and now, as of this morning, it’s moving and has 100,000 views on it,” Trim explains. “So not everything goes viral the first day. I’ve had posts that have been out for two weeks, and suddenly, they start going up in views. The whole thing makes no sense. Social media platforms keep the algorithm changing constantly, so no one can capitalize on it.”

Trim posts at the same time daily, noting that ‘consistency is key.’

“With my videos, I try to keep as many of the cooking sounds as possible along with classical relaxing music,” adds Trim. “There are Michelin-star chefs out there doing content, but they’re all in their big stainless steel, shiny monolith kitchens, and it’s very unapproachable and serious. My goal is to create content in my home kitchen where I show beautiful fine dining food, even if it’s something as simple as bread pudding or French fries. I try to make them look stunning and use fine dining techniques the whole way to teach people.”

Trim’s overall goal is to make all his videos feel approachable so his audience can actually make these recipes in their own kitchens.

“One of the coolest things about being a chef social media influencer is knowing that there are people all over the world who are making my recipes and enjoying the same food that I’m making,” Trim excitedly shares.

With more than 241,000 Instagram followers, Trim usually dedicates 3-4 days per week solely to filming content, resulting in approximately 7-9 videos being posted weekly. He engages in daily video editing, attends brand meetings, manages all his content, and actively interacts and engages with his followers.

Breakfast is one of Trim’s favorite things to cook. He makes breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes three to four days a week, and then he and his family enjoy the dishes with nothing going to waste. Trim has had seven or eight of his videos hit a couple of million views, including dishes such as a lobster tail with honey garlic butter that has 3.8 million views; Duchess potatoes, which are very oldschool-like piped mashed potatoes that you bake, which received 14.5 million views; and a cottage pie, which is a very traditional English dish similar to a shepherd’s pie but with beef, which received multiple million views.

“My content is based around taking classic, simple dishes and just really elevating them and making them special,” Trim exudes. “Every so often, I have fun and play around with things.”

Trim’s cuisine tends to be decadent, and he has a particular love for French food using butter, cream, and fat. He also loves to make Japanese and Mexican dishes. His wife and daughter were born and raised in Mexico, so he loves cooking Mexican food because he eats it all the time.

“I’ve done a lot of studying in cookbooks, and Japanese food plays into French food extremely well,” Trims discusses. “I mean, it’s obviously a completely different cuisine. Japanese lifestyle is kind of that pursuit of perfection, and French food is all about perfection and cooking, so the Japanese way of looking at things and French food really go hand in hand very well.”

Trim is also working with brand partnerships on social media. He has just been named the official U.S. brand ambassador for Kikuichi Cutlery, the oldest knife brand in the world that dates back to 1267, when they used to make swords for the Japanese emperor.

Trim also offers private dining with small tasting menus to keep himself cooking professionally in the industry. Each tasting menu can be curated to the client’s desires or selected exclusively by Chef Trim.

Savor The Authentic Flavors of Spanish Tapas In Naples

Travel Spain through your taste buds with traditional Spanish tapas nights offered by a chef and former Spanish vineyard owner.

Maria Ferrera, owner and managing director of IKON, specializes in crafting luxurious, tailor-made itineraries and journeys in Africa, Portugal, and Spain. Alongside her husband, Tony Bryant, a technology executive, WSET-certified wine expert, and former vineyard owner in Spain’s renowned Ribera del Duero DO region, they bring a unique blend of expertise to their travel company. Tony leverages his extensive knowledge of wine to enhance IKON’s offerings, ensuring guests have the opportunity to explore the diverse wines produced in Africa, Portugal, and Spain.

Natives of Naples, Maria and Tony share a profound passion for food and wine. Their venture into the travel industry was inspired during their honeymoon in Africa, where they encountered an inspirational designer. He proposed that by relocating to the U.S., they could partner with him to launch a travel business that leverages their deep connections and knowledge of Portugal and Spain. This idea laid the foundation for their business, focusing on these regions in addition to Africa, even as their initial partner chose a different direction.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MARIA FERRERA

After a few years of operating independently, the pandemic inspired them to launch their ‘Tapas Nights’ concept. With travel restrictions in place, Maria and Tony wanted to offer a taste of Spain and Portugal at home by combining their passions—Tony as a sous chef and Maria as a cook—to create an immersive dining experience. Their ‘Tapas Nights’ are designed to educate guests about the diverse wine regions and culinary traditions of Spain, offering a sense of travel through taste.

Their ‘Tapas Nights’ are more than just meals; they are comprehensive, cultural experiences. They introduce guests to lesser-known Spanish wines and dishes, emphasizing regional specialties and quality ingredients. They also provide insights into product traceability and purchasing authentic Spanish goods. Each event aims to broaden their guests’ culinary horizons, making them feel as if they’ve traveled without leaving their homes.

Tony and Maria host ‘Tapas Nights’ bi-weekly, typically on Saturdays. This year, they have also introduced ‘Paella Days’, a nod to the social tradition of paella in Spain. These gatherings start at noon and are designed to be communal and educational, showcasing the preparation of various paella dishes while fostering a sense of community and shared experience.

“Regarding my personal journey, my passion for wine began at 18, leading me to invest in vineyards in the Ebro region of Spain,” remarked Tony. “Over a decade, my business partner and I produced award-winning wines. My expertise in wine pairing complements Maria’s culinary creativity, making our joint venture not just a business but a shared passion for the culture and flavors of our heritage.”

For Tony, pairing wines and educating people about wine is a passion of his. Many individuals struggle with selecting a good wine, especially in restaurants. They’re often unsure about checking the bottle’s temperature, the cork’s condition, or even observing the server uncorking the bottle. Tony’s goal is to demystify these aspects, helping people recognize authentic wines that truly represent their origins. He believes wine education is crucial because it can be intimidating for many, but it should be an enjoyable journey of discovery.

“Wine exploration should be fun and about trying new things,” expresses Tony. “It’s essential to embrace not knowing everything because the beauty of wine lies in its diversity and the continuous learning it offers.”

During their events, Maria and Tony ensure their guests never experience the same menu twice. They aim to introduce them to different seasonal dishes and wines, making each visit unique and exciting. Their tapas nights are an opportunity for guests to virtually travel through Spain, learning about the different regions and their culinary traditions. They make the experience educational by pairing wines with dishes and detailing their origins.

“One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing someone who is unfamiliar with wine trying something new and enjoying it,” expressed Tony. “We had a guest from Indiana who initially asked for sweet red wine during the champagne welcome. It was an opportunity to introduce him to something different, which he ended up enjoying. This openness to new experiences is what we strive for.”

Maria adds, “We also don’t Americanize our dishes; we present

them as authentically as possible, which can be a risk but also a rewarding challenge. Thankfully, our guests have been open-minded and appreciative.”

For ingredients, Maria and Tony source what they can locally and adjust as necessary, but they focus on introducing their guests to new ways of enjoying familiar ingredients in a more sophisticated manner.

Maria adds, “Spain has a rich culinary history of over a thousand years, influenced by various cultures. This diversity is reflected in our cuisine, with each region offering unique dishes and ingredients. For instance, croquettes vary significantly across Spain, depending on local preferences and ingredients.”

Their enriching events are designed to be social and enjoyable, emphasizing the pleasure of discovering new wines and dishes. It’s a relaxed environment where everyone can learn and have fun.

The history and culture of tapas in Spain is more about barhopping and enjoying small bites with friends rather than sitting down for a full meal in one place. Each bar specializes in one or two dishes, encouraging people to explore and try different things. It’s a social tradition that’s very different from the American concept of appetizers.

“In the Basque Country, for instance, tapas are known as ‘pintxos’ (pinchos), and they’re served on toothpicks,” explains Tony. “Customers serve themselves and pay based on the number of toothpicks on their plate. This system encourages exploration and enjoyment of a variety of dishes in a casual, social setting.”

LOLA 41 BRINGS GLOBAL BISTRO FLAIR TO NAPLES

In an exclusive interview, CEO Mark Daley discusses the inspiration behind LoLa 41’s expansion, its unique design concept, and the signature dishes and cocktails set to captivate Naples.

LoLa 41, known for its popularity in Palm Beach, Nantucket, and Boston (where it goes by LoLa42), is set to make its debut in downtown Naples in March, adding another gem to its roster of locations. The restaurant’s name, a clever play on longitude and latitude, pays homage to the 41st parallel.

Haute Living (HL): Why did LoLa 41 expand to Naples?

Mark Daley (MD): With the success of Palm Beach, we knew we needed to expand quickly in South Florida and always had our eye set on Naples. We have guests with roots in Naples and the demand was there!

HL: What is the ambiance and design concept for LoLa 41 Naples?

MD: LoLa 41 is an eclectic space - a global bistro with global design elements. The anchor and energy of the restaurant is the 30-seat bar which has antique coins decorated within the countertop from the countries on the 41st parallel. This incorporates the global bistro theme of our restaurant and symbolizes where our menu seeks its inspiration.

HL: Will the food and cocktail menu have drinks and dishes specific to Naples?

MD: The menu is nearly identical to our other locations and features food, cocktails, and wine from the countries on the 41st parallel of the globe.

HL: What are the most popular LoLa 41 dishes and cocktails?

MD: There is something for everyone at LoLa 41. LoLa’s sushi rolls and sashimi are absolute showstoppers. Other popular dishes include our poke nachos, chicken lettuce cups, wagyu beef tartare, grilled octopus, and our famous LoLa Burger. Our Spicy Flamingo cocktail has been a current guest favorite with tequila, watermelon, agave nectar, lime, and a spicy rim. You can’t go wrong with pairing that with our best-selling Anata roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, Tempura, shiso, tuna, and wasabi aioli).

“We are excited to grow the brand to our second location within Florida,” Daley concludes. “We are eager to serve our guests in Naples and look forward to expanding to other Florida locations soon as well as nationwide.”
