Editor’s Desk

Happy Spring...

That sounds a lot better than Happy New Year although it’s been awhile since our last issue. Last year was the inception year for Haute Pink and mine as an Editor. I have long wanted to do a magazine. In my past business, I did a bi-monthly newsletter, but as the digital world progressed, and changes in the business it was shelved. Then I brought it back in a magazine format as a marketing material for the business and garned some great feedback. However, it needed to be shelved again because of changes in the business. I took a little hiatus from the magazine and about a year later, it was reborn into what was shared last year. Thank God for the digital world because it gave me the opportunity to really develop the magazine. What you see now, it what I had envisioned, a sleek, sophistocated, chic presentation for all ages. Although the target audience is 30 +, I have found our readers are chic women in their 20s on up into their 70s and higher. I love it, because it proves great style is ageless. You will notice the first few months of the year were devoid of a new issue. That was because the magazine was undergoing another change. I discovered all of our issues were jumbo and that’s because I, as the Editor was having a problem editing. We get so many beautiful images and story ideas that it’s difficult to say “no.” But I am learning to say “no” or “let’s table that.” In doing so, I think we’ve come up with a much better magazine.

6

I am proud to announce and introduce you to the new and improved, smaller issue of Haute Pink. This issue comes in at a whopping 72 pages. When you line it up against past issues, it’s a fraction of the size, but still packed with the same style. The May cover personality is handbag designer Tonya Hawkes. I am a huge fan of hers even though we’ve never met. Based on our emails, I think we would be great friends. A few months ago, while researching, I kept seeing things about the amazing LeRoyal Monceau Raffles Paris, that I needed to know more. Once I received the press packet, I was completely blown away. In my mind, I had redecorated my bedroom and bath to resemble one of their suites. If you haven’t figured it out by now, my favorite color is pink. When I saw Charlotte Olympia’s “Le Vie En Rose” collection, I knew it needed to be in the issue. I am in love with the “Cherie Rose” sandals. I think I’d wear them once and then place them on display. They are over the top adorable. I’ve got my eye out for a pair. Welcome to the issue and I hope you’ll enjoy it. Happy Spring,

Tracy

Mixing it u with

Stella Jean

Who is Stella Jean? She was a model, but now she is an amazing designer. She has taken pattern mixing to a level that is unfathomable. Her use of color distracts or redirects the eye from the obvious mixed designs and colors to the oneness and compatibility of the tones. Pattern mixing like this is common in quite a few cultures, but in the US it’s just starting to trend. She takes classic shapes and brings them to life with her bright and colorful patterns. The key to pattern mixing is compatibility...mixing within the same family. Most pattern mixers would shy away from bold jewelry, but it’s the bold accessories, that complete the looks. Each season she pushes the mix a little further. Some might say it’s the styling that makes the looks. To a degree yes, but when you have great pieces the styling takes a back seat.

designer creating art you can carry

21

I have never met Tonya Hawkes, but we have traded quite a few emails, making us cyber buddies. I knew from the tone of her emails, that if we ever sat down for coffee, we’d be friends. She is that cool girl you wanted to know or be in high school...which I never was. So why would we be friends? That’s easy... every cool girl has at least one nerdy friend and that would be me. Fast forward and Tonya Hawkes is that cool designer you want to have in your accessory wardrobe. She has earned the right to be sitting in every fashionable woman’s closet. She’s not some wanna be fashionista turned designer or a struggling artist supplementing their art with a capsule collection. She’s a talented designer who happens to appreciate great fashion design. In a nut shell, she’s her customer. A cool, confident, working woman juggling her business and family. She just happens to be doing it all on her terms dressing in her favorite designers and carrying one of her own bags.

22

Her bags may look edgy and only for the cool girls, but that’s not so. Her bags compliment any fashion personality. She uses simple shapes in luxurious materials which is the mark of great design. It was her passion for horse showmanship which cultivated her eye for high quality workmanship of leather goods and equestrian hardware.

23

24

The textures she uses allow the bags to take on a chameleon like mentality, complimenting or accessorizing the woman. And isn’t that what accessories are supposed to do...compliment... personalize...enhance...finish... accessorize. Tonya has been in the design business over twenty years and has worked at some of the most prestigious fashion brands. Her resume includes stints at Donna Karan, DKNY, FURLA. As well as collaborations with Sergio Rossi, Elie Tahari, GianFranco Ferre, Tommy Hilfiger and Alice and Olivia. While at FURLA, she directed and managed all the brands readyto-wear accessories as well as their homes accessories turning the brand into a more youthful commodity. A native of the Pacific Northwest, now living in Bologna, Italy with her family. However, when New York calls she’s quick to answer. It’s her international lifestyle that’s been her endless source of inspiration, “I can really take the best of both worlds, and make all my dreams come true.”

I have had my own design consultant business in Italy a long time now..I was motivated to start my own collection by the financial crisis in the United States. SUM UP YOUR BUSINESS IN 20 WORDS OR LESS. My business is modern designer products with high quality materials and make, with excellent price for value. FAVORITE PIECE IN THE COLLECTION... My favorite piece is the trunk bag because when I see her smile it gives me the deep sense of accomplishment. IF A WOMAN COULD ONLY HAVE ONE BAG, WHAT SHOULD IT BE? If a woman was cursed with the choice of owning just one bag, then it has to be a tote. It's multifunctional and can fit everything we might need for the day.

intimate The Le Royal Monceau-Paris is an assortment of decadent adjectives. On first glance of images for this luxurious boutique hotel, you are awe struck and on your computer trying to make a reservation for the first available date. Looking at the images you are instantly sucked into the artistic energy of the space. The simplistic, chic, sophisticated, modern design respectfully compliments the art. Both the design and the art know how to allow teach other to take center stage. Most hotels of this stature, usually share the art with the more presitigious suites and public spaces. Not this beautiful hotel, but then again, it isn’t like any other hotel. In fact, it doesn’t seem fair to refer to it as a hotel. It’s a luxury residence with the services of a five start hotel. Le Royal Monceau Hotel opened in 1928, and became a rendez-vous of choice for artists and intellectuals. In its reimagined state it has quickly regained it’s status as the rendez-vous for all artists. In the words of Philippe Starck, who has entirely re-imagined Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris: “a hotel is intrinsically pointless, it is just a shelter for people, who deserve our attention, generosity and consideration”. This beautiful property does exceptionally well, at gathering attention.

The Oils Oily skin...ugh. Oil applied to Oily skin...are you insane? Acne and oil...the two don’t mix. Oil in the bath, but not as a moisturizer. These are just a few of the things most women were raised to think about beauty oils. The only exception has been Baby Oil. There is no real answer for the exception. Women have been searching for the perfect moisturizer and in the past avoided a treatment that has been around for centuries. OIL. The old is a new again luxury beauty treatment. Beauty oils have been been given a raw deal. Now they are topping the list of beauty treatment must haves. It’s no mystery or maybe it is that beauty oils have found their way back on to the vanities the world over. It could be the new chemistry or possibly the

desire for natural and organic skin regimes that have brought these products to the forefront. Last year when we interviewed Linda Rodin (Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil...on the previous page), I mention I was in awe of the fact that a face oil, didn’t leave a greasy film and how is that possible? Her answer was simple and easy to absorb, “I think it is because of the proportions of the oils and the magical way they work together.” Easy and uncomplex. Women have been searching for uncomplex skin care solutions since the beginning of time and yet we’ve disregarded the simple things. The new beauty terms being brandied about are things found in our herb pantry or shelf. Chemicals have been replaced by plant oils... sweet almond, St. John’s Wort, hazelnut, macadamia, vitamin E, Camellia, rice bran, safflower, soybean, Moroccan Argan, cranberry seed, Kukui nut, grape seed, rose flower, geranium flower, myrtle, apricot kernel, evening primrose, patchouli and an assortment of essential oils. These nourishing and hydrating formulas also contain little gems our ancestors knew about and we chose to forget. Fighters and healers...myrrh, citrus, coriander, sandlewood, jasmine flower and Japanese sea kelp. Ingredients long pushed aside for chemical agents offering similar results. Back to my question how is it possible to achieve the same results with oils that we do with creams? It’s all in the mix. We aren’t suggesting you dump all your skin care and dive face first into the world of oil. What we are suggesting is that you try a product at a time. Start with a cleanser like Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing oil or Nude Perfect Cleansing Oil for Face & Eyes. Or a moisturizing oil like Rodin

Olio Luxury Face Oil, Darphin Organic Myrrh Aromatic Care or Neal’s Yard Rose Facial Oil. A moisturizig oil is also a great night time treatment. for cleansing, moisturising and treating. For a little added radiance try adding a couple of drops of Boscia Tsubaki Oil into your foundation. There are no rules to using beauty oils. Some will be thrilled with a little treatment oil along with their current favorite moisturizer. This is where a Nude Pro Genius Treatment Oil or something similar will work. The same care and attention we place on our faces holds true for our bodies. Our skin is our largest organ and sometimes we neglect to properly moisturize it. The perfect place to try a beauty oil is on your body. The way skin feels when oil is applied is amazing. It’s silky, soft, supple and glisteny. After your shower try a dry oil like Huile Prodigieuse OR (with gold for a little shimmer), Huile Prodigieuse or REN Moroccan Rose Otto Ultra Moisture Body Oil. Beauty oils are beneficial to every part of your body.

and the City The city has just given birth to another great shopping boutique. The Chloé SOHO boutique is the latest addition on the chic girls shopping directory. The boutique opened in February as the famed house celebrates it’s 60th anniversary. The Chloé woman exudes a freedom and modernity that she comes by naturally and the store captures that spirt and brings it to life effortlessly. The 2,100 -square-foot space houses Chloé’s ready-to-wear, handbag, shoe, jewelry and small leather goods collections. It’s a light filled space with pale shades of soft beige and ivory and gilded metal forms. It’s cool and luxuirous environment oozing with the Chloé spirit. Like most luxury boutiques, it’s filled with antiques...20’s chair by Eileen Gray and Curtis Jere 70’s light fixtures. A new boutique and a new bag. Chloé introduced a new bag for Spring/Summer 2013...the Amelia. It’s a chic bag with the same spirit as the ready-to-wear collecion. The SOHO boutique is the exclusive retailer of the ostrich leg & calfskin chianti red and brown version.

MESCHAUSSETTES ROUGES

There aren’t that many ways a man can add color in his wardrobe. The three areas that are visible are his shirt, tie and pocket square. Most men are traditionalists and stick with the basics, black, brown, dark grey and navy. However, the more fashion forward male jumps at the opportunity to interject color in his hosiery. There’s a great shop in France that caters to this desire....Meschaussettes Rouges. I was on a business trip and noticed the bright pink socks this gentleman was wearing. The color was amazing. When I complimented him, he told me he had gotten them in Paris and forwarded the information to me. I checked out their website and a phone call later, I met Vincent. After speaking with him, I knew I had to share this store and Vincent.

If you ever needed a WiFi hotspot at your fingertips, look no further. The AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate might be for you. It weighs only 3.6 ounces. It’s like having a miniature cell phone. It’s a black rectangular internet lifesaver. The device’s components are simple: a power button, audio switch, a micro USB charging port, and two external antenna ports.

at&t mobile hotspot elevate

The 1.77 inch LCD screen displays all your info- including GPS signal, battery level, signal level, username and password, which can be hidden. To operate, just turn it on. It immediately locates AT&T’s network, and starts broadcasting its signal as an available Hotspot. You get 5GB a month. If you commit to a two year plan, you can purchase the Elevate 4G for $69.99, or purchase it contract free for $269.99. Connecting is easy as locating Elevate in your wireless locating device, selecting, and entering the password. The Elevate can connect up to five devices simultaneously. The Elevate supports LTE technology, however, in some states this technology is just now rolling out. After booting up the device it automatically connects to whichever AT&T network it can find. It connects to HSPA+21 worldwide, falling back to 3G if no HSPA network is present. However, on a LTE connection, speeds are very fast averaging 24.63 Mbps down, and 11.53 Mbps up.

Kevin Hypolite

68

The downside is reliable signal strength. From my personal experiences, The Elevate cannot be near other electrical or computer devices, as this will disrupt connection strength. The battery lasts about 4 hours and 30 minutes streaming over HSPA. Still, it performs, and that is why I use it. I give it a thumbs up in my book.
