Editor’s Letter
Welcome to the digital age. Publishing a adigital magazine is fun. It’s also not without it’s complications. This is issue three and so far, it’s our largest. It didn’t start out that way, but there was just so much great fashion that it was difficult deciding who to include. Seems like I said the same thing the last issue. Along the way to launching the issue we ran into a few challenges. Our email went down which cut us off from the outside world. And we tried some new software which overwhelmed our computer. It got a little cold and a reboot was required...causing us to lose a week’s worth of work, which we thought had been saved. So we apologize for the delay in getting the issue out, but it really was due to technical difficulties. We hope the great fashion makes up for it. We set out to call this our Fall Fashion Issue, but that changed. We worked with some amazing collections in fashion, accessories and beauty and quickly realized, it wasn’t just about the current trends, but about things we liked. We were introduced to some new brands: Cabe, Dovima Paris, Daniele Michetti, Jouer Cosmetics and Anndra Neen. Then there are the more established brands that we are excited to include: Lanvin, Chloe, Alexander McQueen, Altuzarra, Nina Ricci, YSL, Etro, Roger Vivier, Nancy Gonzalez, Tom Ford Beauty, NARS, Chanel Beauty and Giorgio Armani Beauty. We want to give our readers a mix of brands they know and brands we feel they’d like to know. This issue includes the last installment of our series with Mr Porter for our mens section and it’s devoted to Fall Essentials. We also discovered a new grooming product for men, “Force Supreme” anti-wrinkle serum by Biotherm Homme. Biotherm is committed to educating men on proper skincare and this is part of their “Live Like A Man” campaign. Our shopping field trip is to sophisticated New York retailer, FIVESTORY. Words do not do this store justice...it is beautiful. And our Book Shelf took on a different look this time wtih Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf Goodman. The book was written to commemorate the 111th birthday of Bergdorf Goodman. It’s filled with anecdotes, quotes and a little fashion history. A must have for every admirer of fashion. You will also notice a few designs changes. We are experimenting with layout, fonts and content, all in a quest to find the right mix for the magazine. It is my desire to make sure you aren’t bored, but excited about reading each issue. Thank you to everyone that helped make this issue possible. I’m not going to promise the next issue won’t be as large. However, I do promise it will be a good issue. Happy Fall.

PINK PAD Gloves Gloves appeared on the fall runways and mot just as a matter of keeping your hands warm, but as one of the hottest accessories for fall. The traditional solid leather colors are still a top favorite. However, the trend is leaning more to bold colors, color blocking, fur trimmed, mixed textured, embellished, short or long. Try a mix textured pair like these by Roger Vivier to add a little spark to your wardrobe. These green, grey, black short gloves will look beautiful peeking out from the sleeve of your coat this season.

Coffee or Tea? Espresso and Matcha green tea depending on the time of day and my mood. Croissant or baguette? Ficelle - it's a very thin baguette that's all crust, which is perfect for dipping in coffee with butter and jam for breakfast. What motivated you to start your own collection? An overriding obsession with fit, cut, colour, fabric and quality, endless curiosity and the search for the perfect dress. Who are your favorite designers? From the pantheon of the greats I worship Cristobal Balenciaga, Madeleine Vionnet, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen. I consider myself blessed for having been fortunate enough to work with the last two on that list. Describe your personal style? Simple, sensual, colourful, bling-averse, with a love of hidden and refined detail and a touch of the unexpected. What was your inspiration for this collection? The everyday clothes that Mona Bismarck and Bunny Mellon had made by Balenciaga for gardening and yatching...the most wildly chic clothes, and I love the idea that such style and refinement should be there throughout the day, and not just for a grand evening. What's your favorite piece in the collection? There is never one favourite piece. It's deliberately a very edited collection, but one that provides lots of options in terms of colour and fabric, so it depends
106 HAUTE PINK
on my mood and what shoes and accessories I feel like wearing. How would you describe your customer? Absolutely delightful and incredibly nice women with the most wonderful sense of who they are. What three pieces should every woman have in her wardrobe? A beautifully cut "smoking" jacket, a marvellously structured coat and a simple, flattering dress that suits her shape, with the right proportions in terms of skirt and sleeve length. It seems French women are born with a chic gene the rest of us didn’t get. How can we non-French women be as chic as our French counterparts? First take a good look at yourself, decide on your best features and then make sure that these are the ones that are being highlighted when you get dressed. It's not about how something looks on someone else, but how it looks on you. If you really do this, you feel confident, and that is the best beauty and style enhancer of all. Think about fit, fabric and quality rather than just about fashion when you shop. Choose simple rather than complicated for shape and really enjoy yourself when it comes to accessories. When I first came to Paris there were all these wonderful expressions to learn about, and my favourite is "bien dans sa peau” which translates as feeling good in your skin... its a huge mixture of things, that starts with being interested and therefore interesting, but from a pure style point of view, if you look after the details, wear clothes that fit (which means you are comfortable), have fun and be yourself rather than wear a disguise, you will radiate chic.
If you weren't a designer, what would you be? I am so inspired by everything, that its hard to say...I can see an incredible wildlife documentary and then spend ages researching fish or birds, or eat something amazing that gets me all passionate about cooking and playing around with recipes. I suppose it would have to be an interior decorator - which when compared with being an astronaut, which is what I wanted to be as a child, sounds unbelievably dull. I sort of do the decorating thing already with my own house, as it allows for finding ways of bringing all the inspirations together. You relax by... Reading historical biographies. I ask everyone this question, what shade of pink best describes you and why? Rose Indien. It brightens up your day, makes everyone look good and is a very distinctive colour.

Handbags are to women what cars are to men. A beautiful handbag can instantly change an outfit from casual to formal and vice versa. A few seasons back the “It Bag” trend started and it seemed the need to grab every “It Bag” became an addiction for fashionistas the world over. Now the “It Bag” trend has passed... sort of and been replaced with originality. Women are still in love with the current hot bag, but are a little more selective in which ones to add to their collection. This season is seeing a return to the “Ladylike” bag. This revised style turned up on the runways in exotic leathers, fur, luxurious fabrics and sdorned with simple hardware or lots of embellishments. The following pages are filled with a few of our favorites for the season.

of Bergdorf Goodman, “Nancy Gonzalez is one of the Key Brands in our accessories department. We’ve had an enormously successful relationship with her for Years. She is a true visionary who has revolutionized the precious skins market with her mix of unconventional colors and design.” Her bags are modern with classical elements. Suitable for all ages of women. The funky colors draw in the younger shopper and the classic shapes, draw in the more mature sophisticated shopper. These are the kinds of bags that get handed down throughout generations. Nancy’s business model is one to be admired. Not only has she gone against the grain in establishing her own business, not something most Columbian women do. She’s taken her drive and love of her community a step further by employing mostly women as the craftsmen of her luxury bags making them patient inventors with a little know how. She also provides daycare for her employees children. She is that rare employer who cares about the well-being of her employees and their families. She is commited to giving her employees dignity, optimism and structure, by giving them a rewarding place to work. This compassion for her employees can probably be traced back to her other job as a mother of two. Nancy Gonzaleze has become a household name and leader in the accessories world. Her designs are sold in over four hundred luxury retails around the world including Harrod’s London, TSUM Moscow, Galleria Department Store Seoul, On Pedder Jakarta-SingaporeBeijing, Dieci Corso Como Milan, Al Duca D’Aosta Venice, Lane Crawford Beijing, Joyce Hong Kong-Shanghai, Holt Renfrew Canada, 57 Montaigne Market Paris, Aishti Beirut, Harvey Nichols Dubai along with Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue.

has been described as petite, Softspoken, determined... these are just a few of the words used to describe handbag designer Nancy Gonzalez. Once you read her bio you discover she so much more. Nancy was born in Colombia and began selling in the United States in 1998. Debuting her seven-piece collection at Bergdorf Goodman. Nancy’s handbags are not just handbags, but works of art crafted by local Colombian craftsmen. She uses rare and unique materials in bold colors to produce must have pieces. “Nature is my best accomplice and my source of inspiration is life,” she says. “I always try to push the limits of what can be done with precious skin.” Her aim is to convey joy, benevolence and strength through her designs, creating an emotional relationship between her clients and their bags. “I incorporate elements to each piece that make us smile; a color, a texture, a detail, a surprise.” Nancy extensive line of woven cluthces, weekenders, satchels, hobo bags and signature box clutches. FIVESTORY NEW YORK
FIVESTORY, the luxury retail salon that opened ealier this year on Manhattan’s Upper Eastside is making it’s presence known. Not your typical boutique, but a grand retail emporium. Encouraged by her father, Fred Distenfeld, Claire set out to create a store with a very European elegance similar to Colette of Paris and Corso Como 10 in Milan. The Distenfelds a five story brownstone at 18 East 69th Street for thier retail venture. “When imagining what we wanted Fivestory to be we used words like ‘maven’, ‘connoisseur-ship’, ‘curated’, ‘au courant’ and of course ‘luxury’. Fivestory is meant to be unique and exciting like shopping at Fiorucci and BIBA was in the 60s and 70s. We’re about uptown and downtown; up-andcoming and establishment; A democratic, fun and newly distinct attitude.” Claire Distenfeld. When you step inside you are immediately greeted by custom-dyed deep emerald green Italian velvet walls and a custom wrought iron balustrade. The floors are covered in grained Italian black and white marble. The Distenfelds hired Interior Designer Ryan Korban to bring their vision to life. “Creating a boutique within a townhouse was the perfect mi. I am always trying to blur the lines between commercial and residential; re-inventing tradition; something that could stand confidently next to Madison Avenue and re-define luxury for a new generation.” Ryan Korban. FIVESTORY is a shopping exeperince not to be missed. I don’t know anyone who would pass up shopping for shoes in the sky lit “shoe garden. HAUTE PINK 155

EYE linerS It’s no secret there’s a difference between Summer/Spring and Fall/Winter makeup palatte. In the spring and summer months, makeup tends to be a little lighter in texture and bolder in color. This fall the palattes are filled with intense and vibrant color. A common theme among the collections is jewel tone. Another trend in the Fall/Winter palette is the kohl pencil. Not only in the traditional black, but also in vibrant jewel tones. This isn’t your mother’s blue eyeshadow, but a sexy, modern version with a little edge. We suggest keeping the cheeks soft and the lips a little nude. Or flip it...a pale or soft eye with a strong lip. Keep it simple and clean. When it comes to your nails, be bold. Carry your jewel tones down to your nails. This is the season to try something with a little more intensity. Bold, vibrant nail color makes the gloomy fall and winter months seems a little less gloomy.

ON THE SHELF Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf Goodman by
Sara James Mnookin
Forward by Holly Brubach
It
only takes one visit to Bergdorf Goodman to understand why the title speaks volumes to so many people. Bergdorf Goodman is more than a department store, it’s a lifestyle. Shopping at the same place where Grace Kelly ordered her wedding invitations; where Jacqueline Kennedy was outfitted for the inagural ball; where designers Halston and Michael Kors got their start; where not only prominent New York women, but women from all walks of life shop, can only be summed up by the title of ouf favorite book for fall...”Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorf Goodman.” Written by Sara James Mnookin the book is a celebration of the store’s 111th birthday. Only the second time the store has celebrated such an auspicious ocassion. After one visit, shoppers get on a first name basis. Being referred to simply as “Bergdorf’s.” Many a woman has beeen heard saying, “I’m headed to Bergdorf’s.” Shopping there is more than just picking up a pair of hose or a lipstick, it’s shopping in one of the most well curated fashion closets. The store has played host to some of the most notable fashion designers, celebrities, writers, and employees from Candice Bergen to Carol Burnett, Manolo Blahnik and Alber 184 HAUTE PINK
Elbaz to Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen to famed fashion Director Linda Fargo, all sharing stories about the store. The stories paint a story that is entertaining and delightful for lovers of fashion. Filled with lush photos and original sketches created by Bergdorf Goodman of some of the major designers who’s work has been a part of the store for decades: Balmain, Chanel, Lanvin. There are also samples of advertising campaigns throughtout the store’s history, vintage photographs of the store and images of the renowned Bergdorf Goodman store windows. This amazing store is situated on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 58th Street. The spot where the famed Cornelius Vanderbilt Mansion once stood. Bergdorf Goodman was founded by master tailors Edwin Goodman and Herman Bergdorf in 1901 and has been the pinnacle of style, service and inspiration ever since. There is only one Bergdorf Goodman and that’s how it should be. The book is the companion to the documentary of the same name which is scheduled to launch in September. My wife and I spent five days at the beautiful Marriott Hotel in Quintana Roo Mexico. The first thing we noticed when getting off the plane was the heat and humidity. It was like walking around with a personal shower dripping off your body. However, it felt wonderful. The staff at the hotel was amazing. The people that we met on the property and in the city were very friendly. It was looking like a perfect get-away. At breakfast, we dined at their restaurant with fresh fruit, sweet honey from a stationary bee hive with honey dripping off the cells, and all the standard foods for an American breakfast, but with a twist. There was fresh guacamole made every morning that was outstanding. Omelets made to order and all you can eat. In addition, tortillias were at the ready for every meal including breakfast; so you could be creative with your meals. During our meals, we looked out the window at the clear awesome views of the crystal clear ocean. It was dining at it’s best. We decided to take a cab and drive downtown Cancun to walk around the outside mall, and take in a movie. Everything was in Spanish which made the day more exciting translating! Everything you would need is near by, however, walking was like walking in a desert. It was 106 degrees which felt like 115degrees due to the humidity. So we rode in a cab for long distances. and walked short distances only. As we walked the beach in the evening, the humidity was so high, our glasses would constantly fog up! There were excursions for a lot of great water activities....we decided to attend the Snorkel Dive excursion. We met up with our group at ten in the morning and then rode mini boat/jet skis to a remote location an hour away from our hotel. We and eight other couples rode our watercraft out into the Cancun oceans and took in the sites that Cancun had to offer. We rode pass remote planes, ocean paths which looked like roads that divided into separate paths; like deserted stretches of a remote highway. We finally arrived to our destination, secured our water crafts and jumped into the warm ocean water. We snorkeled for about 45 minutes, but the memories will last a lifetime. The following day I took advantage of their wave runner rentals. What started as a ride around in the ocean turned out to be an hour long excursion. One of the employees witnessed my riding skills and came out on the water and invited me to tag along with him through the ocean neighborhoods of Cancun. I followed my 194 HAUTE PINK
leader on a mini excursion into some remote locations filed with amzaing water front homes and private docks. We continued our 75mph water ride into downtown Cancun on the water, taking in all the sites which could only be seen from our view on the ocean. Although the temperature was 105 and humidity made it feel a lot warmer, it felt like paradise skimming over the ocean with the cool breeze in my face. photos by Kevin Hypolite HAUTE PINK 195

Speak now
forever hold your peace! It seems like our entire environment is speaking back to us on every level. If you're paying a bill through your telephone, making a purchase at the market through the self-serve line, playing a electronic family game in the living room, or using your cell phone, technology is moving our generation at light speed; or so it seems. The technology has been around since the 90s and before. Speech-to-text was the first optimal step in allowing recognition systems to respond. The Pegasus and Jupiter systems offered airline and weather
204 HAUTE PINK
GADGET GUY information. AT&Ts Voice Recognition Call Processing system cut call centers expenses allowing computers to handle basic requests. Every year speech recognition turned into a money saving tool for many companies. So exactly how does "Siri" and the likes technically work? Here is a window into the other side of the cell phone: The sounds of your speech are immediately encoded into a compact digital form that preserves its information. The signal from your connected phone was relayed wireless through a nearby cell tower and through a series of land lines back to your Internet Service Provider where it then communicated with a server in the cloud, loaded with a series of models honed to comprehend language. Simultaneously, your speech was evaluated locally, on your device. A recognizer installed on your phone communicates with that server in the cloud to gauge whether the command can be best handled locally — such as if you had asked it to play a song on your phone — or if it must connect to the network for further assistance.(If the local recognizer deems its model sufficient to process your speech, it tells the server in the cloud that it is no longer needed: “Thanks very much, we’re OK here.”) The server compares your speech against a statistical model to estimate, based on the sounds you spoke and the
order in which you spoke them, what letters might constitute it. (At the same time, the local recognizer compares your speech to an abridged version of that statistical model.) For both, the highestprobability estimates get the go-ahead. Based on these opinions, your speech — now understood as a series of vowels and consonants — is then run through a language model, which estimates the words that your speech is comprised of. Given a sufficient level of confidence, the computer then creates a candidate list of interpretations for what the sequence of words in your speech might mean. If there is enough confidence in this result, and there is — the computer determines that your intent is to send an SMS, Erica Olssen is your addressee (and therefore her contact information should be pulled from your phone’s contact list) and the rest is your actual note to her — your text message magically appears on screen, no hands necessary. If your speech is too ambiguous at any point during the process, the computers will defer to you, the user: did you mean Erica Olssen, or Erica Schmidt?
Again this is a good time in life to witness technology evolving from all angles. Personally I cannot wait until these virtual speech bots not only answer your calls, and provide data, but recognize when a customer is upset, mad, or on the edge of cursing, and handles the call in the appropriate manner. In addition, also remembers when you call back! Technology, gotta love it! HAUTE PINK 205
