Adventure Island With so much to see and discover in Aruba, make sure to connect with its people, culture, and sights.
EXPLORE
One Happy Island With steady trade winds, rugged interior terrain, and pristine beaches, Aruba is unlike any other Caribbean island. HISTORY Aruba is one of four countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands; local citizens of the island are Dutch nationals. The island’s first inhabitants were descendants of the Arawak tribe from Venezuela. Europeans arrived at the turn of the 15th century, followed by Spanish rule until 1635, after which the Dutch took control with a few intermittent years of British rule. In 1986, Aruba obtained a separate status as an autonomous country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. HISTORIC SPOTS Located in front of Malmok Beach is the Antilla, a German freighter sunk during World War II and home of Aruba’s most visited dive site. Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins on the northern coast
line offers insight into Aruba’s gold mining past. Fort Zoutman houses the Aruba Historical Museum alongside the Willem III Tower. MUST-EAT BITES Pan bati, a savory pancake with a sweet and fluffy texture, is the perfect accent to Aruba’s fresh seafood or dipped in a local stew. Pastechi is fried cheese inside a pastry. It can be filled with protein or vegetables. Keshi yena, a Dutch-inspired dish, is often made of Gouda cheese hollowed out and stuffed with a filling of spicy chicken.

DRINK UP Balashi and Chill are Aruba’s main brews. A classic island cocktail is the Aruba Ariba, made with Coecoei (an Aruban liquor) combined with vodka, banana liqueur and local rum.
PAPIAMENTO Papiamento is a Creole language with elements of African, Arawakan, Dutch, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish spoken by over 300,000 people on the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.
DOWNTOWN ORANJESTAD Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, is one of the most colorful cities in the Caribbean; brightly colored, Dutch-style buildings line Main Street with the highest concentration of the island’s shopping and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy a variety of local stores stocked with Aruban crafts alongside Dutch favorites such as cheese and chocolates, in addition to iconic worldwide brands offering leather, jewelry, designer fashions, and more. Aruba’s most noted artists and craftspeople display products in this shopping oasis. Downtown Oranjestad restaurants, cafés, and bars offer over a dozen varying types of cuisine. Aruban classics to Brazilian, Chinese, Dutch, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean, Mexican, steak houses, and more are only a sample of the eatery choices. CULTURE Close proximity to South America and influence from
three different cultural reigns has transformed Arubans into an extremely eclectic population of over 90 different nationalities blending to make a warm, inviting community with many intriguing facets from cuisine and art to sport and lifestyle.
TOP PHRASES Bonbini, meaning “welcome,” is a friendly and often-used greeting. Por fabor translates to “please” and is the most useful local colloquialism for a tourist to ask for directions. Hopi bon, meaning “very good,” is a wonderful phrase to describe an experience or feeling on the island. Danki, translated as “thank you,” will come in handy. Ban goza, meaning “let’s enjoy,” describes the emotion of many island visitors. DISCOVER ARUBA TOURS, DINING & SHOPPING | 43

Mother
Nature Aruba is home to a unique mix of flora and fauna particular to only this island. DIVI-DIVI TREES Aruba’s iconic tree grows best in this part of the world. With a maximum height of 30 feet, the tree is influenced by the northeast trade winds, allowing for impressive canopies that always point southwest, giving it the nickname of compass tree. DESERT LANDSCAPE Aruba is consistently documented as one of the sunniest spots in all of the Caribbean. This, combined with an arid climate, allows for dense cacti, desert flowers, Caribbean pines, wild orchids, lush vines and other exotic flora. MARINE LIFE Aruban waters are thriving with
incredible creatures such as sea turtles, moray eels, stingrays, octopi, seahorses, starfish, clown fish, barracuda, grouper, and more. BIRD-WATCHING There are over 200 species of birds on the island, including the prikichi, the Aruban parakeet with a lovely green plumage and yellow-orange head; the warawara, an eagle-like bird of prey; and the endangered shoko, a small burrowing owl. REPTILES Aruba is home to half of all lizard species in the world and rarities like the Aruban cascabel rattlesnake, Aruba leaf-toed gecko, and the Aruba whiptail lizard.

ISLAND BEACHES Aruba’s beaches are famous for powdery-soft white sand set against a palette of turquoise and aqua, ever changing with the Caribbean sunlight. Visitors have 20 recommended beaches in which to enjoy, some including award-winning choices from National Geographic and USA Today. MOST FAMOUS BEACHES Eagle Beach, rated as one of the best beaches in the world, is the island’s widest beach and home to Aruba’s archetypal fofoti tree (often mistakenly called the dividivi tree), which are seen in many of Aruba’s promotional materials as well as wedding photos. Lowrise hotels line the landscape and there are a variety of watersports, beach activities, and food and beverage kiosks. Keep a look out for sea turtle nests. Baby Beach, on the southeast portion of the island, is a family and snorkeling haven. The water is calm, clear, shallow and sheltered from the ocean by a barrier. Arashi Beach, located on the northernmost part of the island, is a multifaceted retreat with Aruba’s California Lighhouse as a backdrop. The turquoise water is calm, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling.
The Natural
For thousands of years, pounding waves and strong winds have slowly chiseled away at the limestone cliffs along Aruba’s north coast to create several natural bridges. The largest of these bridges used to be the famous Natural Bridge, which collapsed on September 2, 2005. Despite this, it is still the most photographed natural bridge, and it remains a tourist attraction in Aruba, with the adjacent intact Baby Bridge also meriting a visit. 1. FORMER NATURAL BRIDGE The natural arch (as it used to be), measuring approximately 25 feet (7.6m) high and 100 feet (30m) long, was the remnant of an ancient cave. 2. COLLAPSED NATURAL BRIDGE Since the collapsed bridge is now blocking the ocean from the beach, magnificent sceneries of the waves bursting against the rocks can be viewed from the bay behind the ruins of the bridge. 3. WORTH A VISIT The beautiful building at the Natural Bridge has an Aruba country home look and feel, which is typical of the old-style homes on the island. The interior includes state-of-the-art restrooms, a nice bar, gift shop, and sitting areas. One of the most unique features are the panoramic views to the ocean and the surrounding hills right from the sitting areas that
Bridge
are created by a series of big windows. The view is second to none. 4. THE GIFT SHOP & BAR The gift shop offers unique souvenirs and the very popular Biba Dushi line of apparel. The bar includes a wide selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, snacks, sandwiches, and ice cream. Natural Bridge is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5. TOURING THE NATURAL BRIDGE The Natural Bridge and Baby Bridge are a stop during many island tours and can also be reached with your own car. The roads are not perfectly paved but a 4WD is not necessary. The Natural Bridge is just a little farther down from Bushiribana Golds Mill Ruins, passing the
Ostrich Farm. From the Natural Bridge you’ll have a view to Andicuri Beach. This beach, though, can only be reached with a proper 4WD or organized off-road safari. De Palm Tour is your gateway to super fun and adventurous tours on the island! There are different tours where the tour sight is The Baby Bridge and Natural Bridge Ruins that can be booked through depalm.com. You can visit the De Palm Concierge or Activity Desks in one of the hotels. Since 1998 By visiting Sultan Restaurant you will be delighted with a unique experience of the middle east in Aruba. Our Middle Eastern Specialty dishes are prepared with the basic spices used in the Middle East in a slightly modern fusion style. Typically, dishes are served according to savoury or sweet, rather than in courses. Food is served in various platters and dishes at a dining table, served in plates, and eaten with cutlery, as is the European tradition. In traditional Arabian restaurants, a large, low table lined with Persian rugs and with cushions around the sides is the setting for feasting; people sit cross-legged in a circle, and food is served in the centre, again eaten with cutlery in separate plates. Afterwards, tea will be served in "kamar baareek" glasses [literally 'narrow waist'] with sugar lumps, Persian sweets, and possibly a hookah, enjoyed in the same communal fashion.

A conversation with Founder’s Son, Tesh Chugani Q: Where did you start and where does the name Kay’s name come from? A: We are a family owned and operated business in the Caribbean for 30+ Years. My Dad founded the business in 1989 on St.Maarten. When deciding upon a name, he wanted to incorporate his parents blessings. Kay was my Grandfather’s nickname and my Grandmother’s name start with S, hence Kay’s. We truly believe their blessings and good wishes are with us as we are now in 6 Islands, manage 9 retail stores, along with our production factories and wholesale division.
highest grade of natural vivid pink diamonds from the Argyle Mine in Australia and did a pink diamond halo around 2 diamonds. Wornby my wife, Reena, the 2 white diamonds represent our 2 daughters.
Q: What continues to inspire you to lead and grow your Family Business? A: This one is easy and without a doubt, My Parents. My parents moved from India to St.Maarten in the late 1980’s in hopes of starting a successful business and giving us the opportunity for a better future. My Dad had limited knowledge of the industry and spent his nights educating himself on gold, diamonds, and exotic gemstones. I recall the early mornings and late nights they had to put in to maintain and grow our family business all while not sacrificing family time. In the past many years, with the support of our loyal clients, we have been able to maintain our family integrity while growing our business across the Caribbean.
Q: What is the most unique or special jewelry item that you have designed in your 20+ Years? A: Can I say every piece? Every item I feel has a story! I have been blessed to be part of so many special occasions. If I had to pick from personal collection, it would be a 2 stone bypass ring with ideal-cut round brilliant diamonds and natural pink diamonds. I sorted the
Q: Can you share with us one special experience with a client that you recall? A: I remember this one like it was yesterday (though it was almost 17 years ago). I was referred to a client from Upstate NY and it was their first time to Aruba. As he introduced himself and his wife, he handed me his Credit Card and walked away. I recall asking him “where are you going and I have your credit card?” His reply “whatever she wants and I know you will take care of the fair price. You came highly recommended based off trust and family values and I know you won’t guide us wrong.” I never forgot that experience as it made me realize as a young leader and businessman, all we have is trust and our family values.
