preservation laws in the country. In 1931, Charleston adopted the first preservation-zoning ordinance in the United States. Those regulations continue to protect the exquisite architecture and picturesque settings for which the city is renowned. East Bay Street is home to Charleston’s famed Rainbow Row. Built between 1730-40, the area developed because of the shipping industry. At one point more than 200 ships a day were loaded and unloaded in Charleston harbor. After the Civil War, the area fell into disrepair. It was mostly left to vandals and criminals until the early 20th century, when Judge Lionel K. Legge and his wife Dorothy Porcher Legge bought and renovated several of the buildings there. A number of stories circulate about how the structures got their varying hues, but regardless of their origins the neighborhood has become a Charleston landmark.

If you’re looking for a more active experience, Charleston County Parks offers a wide network of facilities, events and programs to help you become better acquainted with the area. Fishing is a popular pastime at multiple parks, where you can rent rods, participate in tournaments or simply set off for a day of fishing from one of the 19 boat landings the parks system maintains. You can always cast your rod off the Folly Beach Pier, the second longest pier on the east coast. But if that isn’t your thing, you can always take a stroll, admiring the loons, grebes, terns, sea ducks and other wildlife attracted to the area. Several restaurants are located nearby, too. Beyond the natural draws, the parks system also has other places of interest, including SK8 Charleston, a 32,000-square-foot skate park; several cutting-edge water parks; an archery range; and an equestrian center.

DAY THREE: CITY LIFE Charleston boasts some of the country’s most popular shopping, arts and dining districts, and they’re all within blocks of each other. If you just want to drop yourself in the thick of it, head to the concentration of galleries on Broad Street. These and the galleries found a couple of blocks away on East Bay Street make up the Gallery District, where you can find, admire and invest in local, regional and national artists working in a variety of styles and media.

Master Gardener Catherine Rasor and her staff have received to Rasor, should be the same into the foreseeable future. For those interested in seeing the astounding array of flowers, the gardens are in full bloom starting in April and through June, but can be enjoyed throughout the summer and well into fall. The 738-acre property dates back to 1681 and features a Georgian-designed mansion built in 1936, several cabins that belonged to former slaves and were occupied by sharecroppers well into the 20th century, flower gardens, a butterfly pavilion, the famed Avenue of Oaks — planted by Major John Boone’s

one of the most picturesque and celebrated properties in the country: Magnolia Plantation & Gardens. Though the plantation dates back to 1676, the famed gardens were developed in the 1800s, when they were reworked in an English style by Reverend John Grimke-Drayton, who — according to family legend — took on the outdoor project in order to lure his bride south from Philadelphia.

These Gullah ladies share uplifting spiritual messages that project love and understanding about the hardships of the past in relationship to where they are today.

True descendants of the Gullah people present the history of this culture through storytelling, song and dance that is at times educational, at times entertaining, and at times… very moving and emotional. “Exploring The Gullah Culture” is part of the critically acclaimed “Black History In America” exhibit that is on display as part of the tour experience at Boone Hall Plantation.

ong beloved for its tranquil setting and Southern hospitality, Charleston and its surrounding barrier islands have been a sought-after destination for history buffs, foodies, artisans, beach bums and so

many more. And in 2021, the area will see tens of thousands of golf lovers descend upon its shores to witness one of golf’s major competitions, the PGA Championship. Attendees will be familiar with the host course — The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort — if not for the fact that the 2012 Championship was also held here, then at least for its Hollywood star-quality thanks to the movie The Legend of

Bagger Vance starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. The Ocean Course now joins the ranks of only 20 other courses that have hosted the Championship multiple times over the competition’s 103-year history. “The impact of hosting a major sporting event such as the PGA Championship is enormous, not only for the resort but also for the entire Charleston region,” says Roger Warren, Kiawah Island Golf Resort President. “It has a significant economic impact, of course, in terms of the revenue that it generates for the region, but it also has the unmeasurable benefit of garnering a lot of positive international attention for all the attributes that make Kiawah Island and the rest of the Lowcountry such a desirable place to live, visit and recreate in.”

beauty, culture and life. More than 35 art galleries are part of the Charleston Gallery Association (CGA) and most are clustered within walking distance from one another. This treats visitors to the tranquil joy of strolling a couple of blocks around and wandering in and out of eclectic gallery spaces full of canvases, sculptures, photography and more. If you happen to have the good fortune of being in town during one of the CGA’s Art Walks, you’re in for a particularly good time. Many of the galleries welcome visitors with food and beverages, host special artists, or stage other enrichment experiences, such as lectures, demonstrations or special exhibits. These Art Walks take place on the first Friday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m. and promise a new experience every time. You never know who you will meet or what you will encounter at some of Charleston’s finest galleries. Though you can always research exhibits and events ahead of time by visiting the Charleston Gallery Association’s online calendar (charlestongalleryassociation.com/calendar), simply meandering through the district often provides more of an education and course, all galleries rotate exhibits and various artists come and go, but the overall quality is consistently high and reliable. Begin your own walk at Atrium Art Gallery, which is centrally located near the corner of Queen and Meeting Streets. It

There are numerous galleries outside downtown Charleston that are worth a drive. A scenic 45-minute ride to Kiawah Island will get you to a standout art space: Wells Gallery. Located within Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s The Sanctuary Hotel, Wells focuses on contemporary art influenced by the Lowcountry and reflective of the Southern experience. Oil paintings, watercolors, mixed media and artisan jewelry are just a few of the kinds of pieces produced by the acclaimed artists that exhibit their work there, and you can even admire their artists as you walk the hotel.

to East Bay Street, or backtrack toward Gallery Row and head east to the corner of Broad and East Bay Streets. First, you’ll hit Corrigan Gallery, which represents numerous artists that work in various media: mixed media, oil painting, lithographs and photography, among others. In the building right next door, you can visit Neema Fine Art Gallery. The newest kid on the block, so to speak, recently kicked off displaying original art and jewelry by Southern African American artists. Perched right at the corner of Charleston’s Gallery Row, Neema carries the original works of outstanding emerging artists, but its primary focus is on original works created by coveted, award-winning African American artists. Different artists are featured regularly, and the gallery also holds a number of events, including art shows, fine jewelry trunk shows, supper club experiences, and private and small-group art and music classes. Going north on East Bay Street will lead you toward W. Andre Allen Contemporary Art, Miller Gallery and Lowcountry Artists, which was founded in 1982 and has the distinction of being the oldest artist-owned and operated gallery in Charleston. As the name implies, the focus is on showcasing work created by award-

or 17 days, Spoleto Festival USA fills Charleston’s historic theaters, churches and outdoor spaces. Performances by renowned artists and emerging talent showcase an array of disciplines, including

opera, theater and dance, as well as symphonic, choral, jazz and chamber music. The Festival was founded in 1977 by Gian Carlo Menotti, Christopher Keene and others as the American counterpart to Spoleto, Italy’s annual Festival of Two Worlds. “Charleston was the ideal location,” says Menotti. “It’s intimate, so you can walk from one theater to the next. It has Old World charm in architecture and gardens. Yet it’s a community big enough to support the large number of visitors to the Festival.” Spoleto Festival comes alive each spring — usually right around Memorial Day weekend and just in time to take advantage of the fact that Charleston’s signature magnolias and rose gardens are in full bloom. The number of visitors blossoms, too, with more than 70,000 people attending the Festival annually. Spoleto has debuted more than 200 national and world premieres, from plays by Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller to cutting-edge compositions by Laura “Laurie” Anderson and Philip Glass. Renee Fleming, Yo Yo Ma and Joshua Bell performed at the event early in their careers, as did the Emerson String Quartet and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Here you can watch as artisans create traditional sweetgrass baskets, jewelry and more, all back by a 100% Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal. Of course, one aspect of the city that lures visitors is its culinary heritage. Savannah Bee Company offers sweetness, sustainability and beauty. “Savannah Bee Company grew out of my passion for bees, beekeeping and honey,” says founder Ted Dennard, who started as a beekeeper. It’s a beautiful store where you can sample single-source honeys, honey mead and beauty products. Shopping downtown can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s not the only destination for retail therapy in the area. Farther out on the barrier islands, all the plantations have their own shops where you can pick up anything from art to plants. And on Kiawah Island, Freshfields Village offers an assortment of stylish boutiques, chic services and even an upscale grocer. Special events are held regularly, and the tone is always laid-back and friendly — in short, Southern.

can boast a winning streak that’s older than most high school students: For 16 consecutive years, this beloved venue has snagged the paper’s Best Seafood Restaurant award. How’s that for seducing a generation that can’t get enough of Charleston she-crab soup and pan-fried sea scallops? An institution of Lowcountry cooking, Hank’s carries on the traditions of French and English preparations, but even those vaunted methods take a backseat to the intensely local product: the harvest from nearby estuaries, bays and tidal creeks. The venue’s manifesto can be summed up by their pithy directive: “There are no real rules, except to use what’s fresh.” Count on executive chef Tim Richardson to maintain a satisfying slow boil with his popular bouillabaisse, but don’t neglect his decadent grilled oysters with red wine Mignonette Gastrique and his unique interpretation of shrimp and grits with smoked Andouille sausage. Stop in early, as the venue’s Craft Cocktail Hour starts at 4:30 — and with Hank’s Oyster Shooter you can get started on local seafood, in a glass. he local foodways in the Lowcountry boast incredibly deep roots and — thanks to the efforts of some pioneering chefs, farmers and food advocates — they also cast a big shadow. Local dishes are no longer a

specialty to be had when in town. They have been elevated, awarded and celebrated the world over. People who dine in Charleston aren’t looking to try Lowcountry cooking on a whim or for the first time. They are seeking the Holy Grail of a kind of cuisine they have come to admire. So what about the rest of the country? Or the globe? If you’re in town and have a sudden hankering for good Mexican fare, you’re in a safe place. Ruru’s Tacos + Tequila, located on Bay Street just steps from Charleston’s famous Pineapple Fountain, invites you to “explore. taste. enjoy.” authentic Mexican cuisine and features the ultimate selection of fine tequilas and tempting margaritas this side of the border. On King Street, El Jefe serves up “Texican” style dishes while nearby Juanita Greenberg’s Nacho Royale makes real “Mexicanish” food prepared fresh and fast. When you are craving sushi, head to Fuji Sushi Bar & Grill, where you can have your fill of signature sushi rolls, including an oyster tempura roll made with tempura oyster, cucumber and avocado. If you are one of the hold outs who is still timid around sushi, the traditional hibachi entrees and combos will not disappoint. The restaurant also features an extensive wine, beer and sake selection. Now, if what you’re seeking is classic fine dining, then make a reservation at Tomasso at Turtle Point, one of the numerous standout restaurants at Kiawah Island Golf Resort. At Tomasso, the ingredients are fresh; the pasta is house made by hand; and the beverage menu includes an inspired list of Old World wines, as well as a delectable house-made Limoncello. In 2017, Charleston-based High Wire Distilling released a gorgeous, ceramic bottled Jimmy Red Bourbon Whiskey, distilled from 100 percent heirloom Jimmy Red corn. That strain had been a favorite of moonshine whiskey bootleggers until the early 2000s, when the last known bootlegger died. Just two cobs remained when he passed away, but thanks to replanting by seed saver and farmer Ted Chewning (who’s credited with reviving numerous lost heirloom grains, legumes and veggies) — along with support from growers Marsh Hen Mill’s (formerly Geechie Boy Mill) Greg Johnson, Anson Mills’ Glenn Roberts and James Beard Award–winning chef Sean Brock — Jimmy Red is enjoying a resurgence. Craft American whiskey makers treasure its sweet, nutty richness. Chefs throughout the city — and across the country — have added Jimmy Red grits to their menus. The best part is that Jimmy Red whiskey can easily be packed in your check-in luggage: yes, you sometimes can take a sense of place with you.

emarkable things are unfolding along Kiawah Island’s eastern-most tip. Ocean Park, renowned for its extraordinary landscapes, stunning shoreline and coveted Kiawah Island Club lifestyle, introduced two

new enclaves to this coveted community. Each offering heralds an innovative new approach to ownership in Ocean Park and furthers the thoughtful evolution of residential options on Kiawah.

THE COTTAGES AT MARSH WALK: HOME SWEET ROAM Having made their debut in April 2020, the seven built-for-sale cottages in Ocean Park’s newest community serve as an ideal basecamp for all-day adventurers. Just beyond each dwelling’s front door, residents access a circuit of nature trails that traverse the mile-long interior parklands, the shoreline and maritime forestry. This serpentine network encourages residents to roam across breathtaking natural habitats on trails that span the entire Island. Nationally acclaimed land planner Mark Permar explains, “the trails allow for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor. They feather out to the beach and Marsh House, on

071 Bordered by both the mile-long interior park and Marsh House, Ocean Park’s bustling social center, The Cottages’ turnkey ease ensures maximum Island enjoyment with minimal fuss. Permar explains, “this new release marks an evolution of the Ocean Park community. The Cottages are a response to the diversity of needs of people at different points in their lives.”

FRONT NINE LANE: A LANDSCAPE OF LEGENDS The famed Ocean Course welcomed golf’s greatest players in 2012. The internationally televised PGA Championship introduced Ocean Park to a global audience. When the PGA returns to the Pete Dye-designed course in 2021, the builtfor-sale homes on Front Nine Lane will be closer to the golf course than any other stretch of homes in the community of Ocean Park. Having just debuted in fall 2020, Kiawah’s newest development features 13 homesites that directly border The Ocean Course, with knee-weakening views of the Atlantic Ocean glistening just beyond. Lake Flato, a world-renowned architectural firm, brings its multi-award-winning talents to Front Nine Lane. The Texas-based team is recognized for creating homes in harmony with the landscape, and their Ocean Park endeavor will certainly reflect that. Showcasing a slightly more modern style than is often found on Kiawah, the homes are arranged in sub-clusters of three, to The Ocean Course and The Beach Club, and all the way to
