NEWS FROM THE HAVELOCK MUSSEL FESTIVAL Everything came together on 14 March to make this year’s festival the success it was. The weather was perfect, there was entertainment to please all tastes and the new “guess the ingredients” contest attracted a good deal of attention. At this stage current financials are being reviewed and the Committee is hoping that it will be able to once again make donations as they have done since the inception of the festival. There will be further information about this in the next “news.” The Annual General Meeting will be held in Havelock Bowling Club on Thursday 30 July at 7:00pm. The Committee has appreciated the suggestions locals have made to it about ways to improve the Festival. The committee has implemented these. Some have been very successful and others need more work. However, the AGM is the opportunity for locals to talk directly with the Committee and who knows, some people may be motivated to come onto the Committee to help. Next year’s Festival will be on 19 March 2016. Already plans are being made to bring in new attractions to make 2016 the best Festival ever.

DOUBLE DOLPHIN AWARDS The parents of Jacob Lawton, Liddy Horton-Smith and RubyMay Illsley-Slape received a congratulatory card at the end of last term sharing the news that one of theirs had received a Double Dolphin Award. Kiwi Can leaders Di and Sophia handed the awards out during Week 8 at assembly acknowledging that these three students had been recognised for working and playing in safe and thoughtful ways with others, showed some initiative in resolving conflict, supporting positive relationships and generally caring - manaakitanga. Hannah Roborgh and Taylor Clark also received a Double Dolphin Award recognising their efforts in relation to whanaungatanga - caring for the wider family ie working all day with adults at the school’s mussel festival stall. Thank you! All these awards naturally underline the school’s core values, especially manaakitanga - caring. Congratulations to all. Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

TERM TWO KIWI CAN THEME ~ RESPECT This is one of the school’s three R’s. Sophia, Di, teachers as well as students have been working on what this looks and sounds like. Like most lessons, the learning comes from making mistakes. Knowing where the boundaries are can be quite a minefield for children to understand. They are constantly looking at adults to copy their cues. Now there is a challenge. Hi Everyone. Classes took a break over the school holidays but are now in full swing. It's great to challenge yourself and it's amazing how good you feel after dancing for an hour. Anyone is welcome and you can ease into it. Feel free to like Havelock Zumba Pam Elvy Facebook page for updates. 2015 WEEKLY TIMETABLE - Havelock School Hall (off Lawrence Street) Monday Morning class 10am-11am Monday Evening class 6pm-7pm Wednesday class 9:30am-10:30am (Havelock Town Hall) Thursday class 6pm-7pm Friday class 9:30am-10:30am $5 per class (under 10yrs free) 10-18yrs $2 per class. HONOURS BOARD ~ NAMES PLEASE In 2011 the 150th Jubilee Committee relocated the honours board to the hall. It was unveiled during the celebrations in its new location and featured an updated list of past pupils meriting inclusion. Nominees are again being sought as we are aware of a growing number of past pupils whose names need to be added. If you or someone you know has achieved in their field of endeavour and you feel they could be acknowledged on the school honours board please take the time to send us the relevant detail and if possible contact details. POOL KEYS The 2014/15 swimming season has finished for the season so we would be grateful for the return of the keys before the end of term (30 Apr) for your deposit refund. Thanks to all those who have already got this sorted.
NOTES FROM THE HAVELOCK MUSEUM SOCIETY INC We learnt earlier this month that the Havelock Museum was one of the four finalists in the Best Museum Project category of this year’s Museum Awards with our campaign to free Havelock’s history. The other four finalists in this category are the newly opened Rangihoua Heritage Park opened by the Governor-General in December 2014; the Mataura Museum (reinventing the Mataura Museum) which re-opened in March 2015 and is based in a 1880s Cottage, known locally as Clematis Cottage showcasing the Mataura Paper Mill and Freezing Works using touch screens to bring Mataura’s social and industrial heritage to life; and Toitu Otago Early Settlers’ Museum “Journey of the Otagos” which tells the story of the Otago Infantry Regiment and Otago Mounted Rifles in WWI. The winners are announced on 7 May at a function held in Dunedin. Win or lose, we are so pleased that the vision and hard work of our Museum designer Sally Papps and her counterpart Jeff Julian have been honoured in this way. Wednesday 21 April was another significant day for our Museum. Havelock has been selected to be a pilot project for Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

recording its social history and on 21 April ten people interested in learning more about the project met in the Havelock School Community Classroom. The workshop was conducted by Joy Stephens a journalist who contributed to the “Prow” website with stories from across the Top of the South and Glenn Webster, the Librarian from Blenheim Library who will be loaning recording equipment for the project. Joy used John Collins, a Museum Committee member who has lived in Linkwater for fifty years to demonstrate the technique of conducting the interview. John’s information alone was fascinating, let alone the rest of the workshop. The second part will be on Wednesday 27 May between 10:00 am and 12 noon again at the Havelock School Community Classroom, when Joy will talk about how to write up interviews. Joy invites anyone interested in being involved in shaping and crafting a historical story including selecting material and themes and writing a story to engage a wide range of readers to come along. Havelock Town Hall In our last “Notes” we promised to share a few more facts about our Town Hall and we are very grateful to Rotorua resident Pauleen Wilkinson (nee Wells) for her research. Pauleen is a good friend of our Museum. On 26th November 1907 the Nelson Evening Mail carried a notice that the Havelock Town Board was calling for tenders for the erection of the Havelock Town Hall, Library and Town Board office. The notice specified that the contract had to be completed in five months. Copies of the plans and specifications could be obtained from the Town Clerk at Havelock. The Town Hall was opened on the evening of Friday 21 June 1907 and the newspaper account promised that there will be “no tedious speech making” and at the conclusion of the Chairman’s remarks “which will be brief”, dancing will immediately commence. There was a children’s dance in honour of the opening on Saturday 22nd June and a further dance was planned for the 12th July to increase the funds of the Havelock Rifle Club. More information on our Town Hall’s fate in the next “Notes.” This screen-grab was taken 25 April 2015. This online resource is all about us - Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui, Top of the South. Worth a look.

SENIOR FIELD TRIP TO THE MARLBOROUGH MUSEUM WWI TUTORIAL April 30 saw our seniors head into Blenheim and spend a fascinating but sobering morning with John Orchard who took them on a time trip back 100 years to a Marlborough and world quite different from today. The hands-on tutorial complemented superbly the work done by students over the latter months of 2014 and early 2015.
Above: The “Squad” standing to attention getting to grips with a uniform that was prickly and not necessarily the right size or shape before heading inside to look at more detail at the period 1914 - 18.
Some of the questions covered included the following… What did Blenheim look like in 1915? What were the common jobs? How did people travel? Were roads tar-sealed? Did our homes have electricity? Did we have radio and television? Did we have flush toilets and running water? Mauri Ora na Akoranga ~ Learning for Life… since 1861

And so the conversation went and then to the call of the Motherland, its social impact and the resultant irrevocable changes to NZ and Marlborough. Once again thanks to those parents, Jo, Daniel and Selena who helped with transporting us to town and back in time. To John O also a special thank you for making history come alive. The session was followed by lunch and a “freshener” at Pollard Park where everyone posed in front of the bright red display in the garden. Below: The various uniforms are explained as were the jobs and wages each received.

On the first day this term the school closed the day with a short session around the thirty crosses neatly arranged by seniors to commemorate the fallen from WWI - the school’s Field of Remembrance. All schools around the country were sent 30 crosses bearing the names of those who fell during 1914 - 18. On April 1 seniors joined Air Force personnel and RSA members at the cenotaph and placed crosses adjacent to the paths representing our local fallen. They sang the National Anthem adding solemnity to the occasion. A Makana chocolate however, lightened the mood. The crosses will remain in place until early May. During the Havelock ANZAC formalities on the 25th, Sara Aston-Butterfield and Mr B shared some of the important aspects of what the day represents to the large crowd that had gathered. They completed their contribution by reading the Ode. TERM 2 THEME - THE EARTH & BEYOND Who better than the only man to appear twice on the cover of Time magazine, to provide inspiration for this term’s theme. Clear dark skies, good questions he once told us and hard work should provide some fertile material for students as they begin to look beyond the immediate. William Pickering of course is one of our most illustrious past pupils and headed the Jet Propulsion Unit at NASA. He must have wondered as a kid, “What’s up there?” Nowadays we might say, “Wassup?
