HAVELOCK MEDICAL CENTRE Flu vaccines are now available at the Havelock Medical Centre. Please phone to make your appointment on 574 2233. TALES FROM TOTARANUI Unless you’re directly involved with a senior in Pelorus you may be unaware that they are still away on their camp at the Totaranui Education Centre in Abel Tasman National Park. Due back tomorrow, they have been spending ten days engaged in a variety of activities and learning how to live more closely together away from the comforts and supports of home. The private Facebook page has been populated with photos and comments keeping everyone associated with the class informed and up to date. The weather, especially during the early days at camp, continued in much the same vein as the first very wet day. The boat ride up the coast from Kaiteriteri proved worthy of noting in diaries with very few retaining breakfast… still it gave most a good appetite for lunch up at the homestead before unpacking and orientation. A very full programme well supported by parents in myriad ways has made this rather special venture possible. The growth well evident in just 90 minutes of challenge is quite remarkable - some obvious within the contexts of canoeing for example but many more, less evident within the broader contexts of teamwork, leadership, personal responsibility, integrity, stress, emotion, understanding personal strengths, traits etc and empathy… the list goes on, certainly an enterprise rich in providing opportunities for development within all. No doubt there will be a number of tired students taking a day in lieu on Fri 12 June as they recover. Special thanks to all the parents who were able to help at the centre on camp, with transport, supplying extras and in particular Piers and Ernie for pulling it all together. Thanks also to those parents who faced the new experience of letting their child go.

We are delighted to announce that the date has been set as Sat 19 March for the 2016 Festival. We have made sure the event is not clashing with the Enduro Bike event, Hokitika Wild Food Festival or St Mary’s Gala - all of which had an effect in some way on this year’s event. Unfortunately the effects of this has meant that the 2015 Festival did not make a profit. However, on the bright side volunteer payments from this year’s festival totalled $6 350 which have been paid out to community groups that helped before, during and after the festival. It is pleasing that the festival was able to provide some community groups with donations. Although it hasn’t been long since the dust has settled from the 2015 event the HMF Committee and Marlborough 4 Fun are already working hard to bring you a better and renewed Mussel Festival for 2016. We look forward to announcing news soon in regards to ticket prices, great entertainment line-up and new aspects of the event. The AGM will take place on Thurs July 30 at 7:30 pm in the Havelock Bowling Club and we encourage you all to attend. There are proposed constitutional changes that will be put into effect at the AGM – these will also be displayed on the HMF website.

NOTES FROM…
The second session of the workshop on recording Havelock’s social history was held in the Havelock School’s Community Classroom on 27 May where Joy Stephens, a journalist who contributed to the “Prow” website with stories from across the Top of the South, gave the participants some more information around the best way to collect valuable stories from our older residents. The first two main themes that those involved will begin with are around tales of happenings, businesses, and people in Havelock’s main streets plus life in the Marlborough Sounds. A third theme to follow is around the history of rugby in the Pelorus area. These stories will be shared with the “Prow” website (www.theprow.org.nz/) and we hope to gather additional audio, images and items that could ultimately be a display/exhibition for the new Jack Shand development. We are grateful to Glenn Webster, the Librarian from Blenheim library, who will be loaning recording equipment for the project. Havelock Museum was not the winner in the Best Museum Project category in this year’s awards. That honour went to two joint winners: Mataura Museum and Toitu Otago Early Settler’s Museum. Nevertheless, we are mightily proud to be one of the four finalists considering the large number of entries received this year. We are still being visited by an average of 23 people each day and are still receiving comments like the one from an Auckland visitor, “Excellent layout & displays & really enjoyed the local stories & connection to people's memories.” SHORTEST DAY MARKET The Havelock Lions are gearing up for their second “Shortest Day” market which will be in held in the Town Hall on Saturday 20 June with doors opening at 9:00 am. The Devonshire Teas that were so popular last June will be repeated this year and we invite visitors to step back in time and enjoy a cup of tea (or coffee) in fine bone china with a delicious scone. For those who prefer a sausage, there will be the inevitable sizzle set up on the front steps of the Hall.

Already a variety of sites have been booked with plants, preserves, DVDs, books, jewellery, clothing, knitted goods including rugs among the items on sale. Nuggety Creek Pork have told us that they will have a 10% discount on pork meat and also will be be selling their popular “1/2 pig in a box” for $10.25 per kilo. There will be a table with information on the proposed outdoor gym and the St John’s Cadets will have their lucky dip bin. Those who enjoy raffles will be well catered for with Nuggety Creek donating a pork joint for raffling. We have also been donated a magnificent toy box , made by a local, for raffling. Tickets in the Toy Box raffle are already on sale at “Eyes on Nature” and the remaining tickets will be sold at the market with the raffle being drawn at 12:30 pm on 20th. Tickets in both raffles are $2. Havelock Lions support our C.A.C.T.U.S. (Combined Adolences Challenge Training Unit and Support) which has been very well attended this year. Debbie will be at the Market to give information on C.A.C.T.U.S. and any future programmes. All in all, the Lions are going all out to make this last Market before spring, a great success with the proceeds going towards sponsorship of a Young Person to attend Outward Bound this year.
