COMBINED SCHOOLS’ MUSIC FESTIVAL Those who managed to make it to the opening night of this music festival were treated to a truly vibrant and stunning choral celebration. When pupils and teachers first started working with the eighteen songs back in April, it all seemed rather daunting. Little by little the movie themed melodies were mastered and the lyrics learned. Ukuleles were added for one item and auditions for soloists were determined during massed practices. Copyright prevents any recording or photography during the performance and so being there on the night was the only option to see and hear the magic of two-hundred youngsters from seven schools under the baton of Elin Thomas. The photo, taken during a rehearsal gives some appreciation of the performance and shows the ukulele group featuring during the Rainbow Connection. The song He Lives In You [Lion King II] featured soloist Ari Tremain, Havelock, and her haunting rendition brought tears to the eyes. Congratulations to Ari and all the students who made the songs their own. The Footloose number showed off more Havelock talent with a very animated and slick choreography. Thanks to all those who helped prep the students especially Mr Throssell and Mrs Eden and the parents transporting children to and from the theatre… a real highlight of the year.

IT’S MARLBOROUGH WATER SAFETY WEEK 16th to 23rd October 2015 Q: What does that mean? A: The Safe and Sound at the Top (SAS@TT) group are asking whanau and caregivers to talk to their children about staying safe around water during Safety Week. The World Health Organization stated that in 2014 that drowning was among the 10 leading causes of death for children and young people. “We are encouraging everyone to talk about safe behaviour around the water with their friends, family and colleagues”, says Mike Henderson of Barnardos (SAS@TT Chairperson). Talk to your friends and family and decide on ideas on how you can keep yourselves safe and sound around water, e.g. Whether you’re 2 or 200, always swim with a friend and always ask permission before you get in the water. Remember your water safety code * Be prepared – learn to swim and survive * Be aware of the dangers
* Watch out for yourself and others * Know your limits
Go to our webpage for more water safety information and to download our children’s activity sheet http://bit.ly/WaterSafety Complete an activity on the sheet and go into the draw to win a term’s free swim classes, family Stadiums passes, a family Jet Boat ride and other great prizes! POOL OPEN NOVEMBER… It looks likely the Board of Trustees will approve the 2015/16 Keyholder’s Agreement at its 27 Oct meeting. Watch this space should you be keen to apply. It is likely the pool will open to keyholders in early November. MARLBOROUGH YOUTH DEVELOPMENT TRUST (KIWI CAN) DROP YOUR BOSS We had hoped to bring you a bevy of photos from skycam but the weather precluded a start on the 18th so the event has been rescheduled for early November. Thanks to all who have helped Tracey, Piers and Vicki reach the $1000 threshold to raise funds for the MYD Trust.

Havelock students joined about 1.3 million Kiwis last Thursday and millions more around the world as the collective global village looks to be better prepared for earthquakes. Despite a few blocked exits and a low rumble giving some realism to the exercise, students dropped, covered and held until it was deemed safe to exit and gather on the top field. In reality of course as learned from the Christchurch quakes, the quake itself is only the trigger setting off a long path to recovery. Systems need to be in place for longer than the quake itself. The school has comprehensive plans that come into play should a serious quake occur. Of course the school is also Havelock’s Civil Defence HQ and so is set up to deal both with logistical management and victim support. The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) has published updated advice about how to prepare for earthquakes, says Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye. The updated advice clarifies what to do before, during and after the shaking stops, and is set out in the earthquake chapter of the reference guide that provides agreed messages for all agencies involved in civil defence emergency management. Although it’s relevant to everyone, the updated advice will be of particular interest to building owners, workplace safety wardens and staff responsible for emergency plans. The updated messages are based on lessons identified following recent earthquakes, as well as increased scientific knowledge in this area. Drop, cover and hold is reinforced as the right action to take in an earthquake. It’s also important to stay indoors until the shaking stops, and you’re sure it’s safe to exit. Often people’s instinctive reaction is to run from the building. However, research shows that people moving as little as three metres during an earthquake are more likely to be injured by flying furniture, fixtures or debris. Another important message is that a fire evacuation assembly point might not be appropriate after an earthquake, because of the risk of falling debris. So you need to have a specific assembly point for earthquakes. Crown copyright ©. Source material by Civil Defence under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence.

SPRING FEST ~ PET DAY A better day weather wise could not have been wished for. Having delivered the bulk of their indoor entries on Thursday, students started arriving with their pets at about 8:30. By 9:15 judging was well underway. Some pupils and their families had clearly been busy since the end of Term 2 and certainly over the holidays preparing loads of entries across a variety of classes. Pre-schoolers too along with a few adults entered into the spirit and added their handy work into the mix. Following the parade at 12:15 the ubiquitous BBQ sausage and yummy hamburger proved to be as popular as ever. Some fun games on the top field ensued before the prize winners were announced and certificates and cups presented. The day drew to its conclusion with a swim. A huge THANK YOU to Caf and her team of judges and helpers. AWARDS Indoor Cert

THANK YOU THANK YOU… On behalf of the Vanuatu vineyard workers, I would like to sincerely thank the Pelorus Area Health Trust for the supply of much needed clothing, footwear, cooking utensils, bedding etc. The boys have been most grateful and have sent much of it home to their families. Most of this gear has been sent to Tanna, the worst affected island in the recent typhoon. I would also like to thank the ladies’ coffee group who donated sufficient gear to fill a square metre in a container destined for Port Vila, which will be forwarded on to Tanna where several of the boys are from. The warm winter clothing dropped off for them at the Treasure Chest by residents of the district was also much appreciated and made those cold mornings more manageable. Jan Godsiff

TERM 4 THEMES Kiwi Can started last Wednesday with its final theme for the year based very squarely on Resilience. You will have noted from the first item in this newsletter that it covers a wide range interpretations. In many ways it is also a fourth R for the school in that it fits nicely following being, Reasonable, Respectful and Responsible. Being resilient often relates to our response to the world – there are things we should and can influence, there are also those things we cannot… knowing the difference, having the skills, diplomacy, tact and judgment all take time to learn. It is more complex than advising someone to simply harden-up. No-one walks in your shoes and neither do you tread the path of another. Being both resilient and empathetic helps everyone. Across a variety of contexts during the term students will be setting up inquiries to test their assumptions. Some are obvious but many are much less so and understanding them is fundamental in science and technology. The Physical World is a big area of learning and one that can be quite exciting. Did you know? Research has found that it is the number of times each day we consume sugary drinks or eat foods high in sugar that increases the rate of decay in our teeth. Foods and drinks which contain sugar increase the production of acid in our mouth which attacks and rots our teeth. It is therefore helpful for children to learn which are ‘anytime’ foods and drinks. Cheese, fruit, raw vegetables, nuts, unsweetened popcorn, milk and water are just some examples. SPECIAL WELCOME Last week saw Doug Agnew start as the school’s new cleaner. Doug lives locally and is keen to be involved over time on a wider basis as well – he has a wide skill set. Welcome Doug, we hope your time with the school is enjoyable and of benefit to all. TAIOPENGA ~ CELEBRATION ~ 27 & 28 October The Taiopenga is a celebration of Māori Performing Arts and is again being held at Clubs Marlborough in less than a week. Our whole school has been working with Whaia Merehira since Term 1 and is about to take the stage to share what has been learned. Skirts have been sewn by Vicki Eden and coupled with the school shirt looks very sharp. The boys are simply wearing black shorts. The complete two-day programme can be found online here should you wish to enjoy other performances. We feature at noon on Tuesday 27 October, the day after Labour Day. We do need significant support to get our whole school to Blenheim and a slip will be coming home during the week seeking help with transport. Please complete and return on Thursday 22 Oct. We will need some dozen or more vehicles. Pupils will leave Havelock School at 10:30 and children will be taking their lunch and other clothes with them as we will have our lunch at Pollard Park before returning.
