The text is decodable at every stage and gradually introduces high-frequency words. Starting with the Launchers series, readers progress to the Dandelion Phonics Readers, building stamina with more text per page.
If you have KS2 pupils struggling to read fluently, then these books revisit key phonic learning with a view to filling in the gaps in phonic skills that form a barrier to children’s reading progress. The Phonic Books® series contain expertly written, highly illustrated, ageappropriate, appealing books that readers will find mature, fun, and exciting, ensuring they gain confidence and achieve success. BANDED ‘REAL’ BOOKS
Badger Learning’s philosophy for the last 34 years has always been to cherry-pick exemplary books for schools and every age and stage within. The Banded Real Book Boxes contain ‘real’* books which have been levelled against the widely used colour bands in a ‘best-fit’ way.
These collections will help you to easily source books that meet the needs of individual pupils whilst bringing variety and breadth to children’s reading diets and helping them to get the most out of reading for pleasure.
*‘real’ in this sense means not developed for a reading scheme but for the pure enjoyment of reading. Our experienced team read, analyse and match every single book to its most relevant colour band, creating a fresh, tailor-made collection of books that you can be confident suits the reading level your pupils require. Free stickers that correspond with the book bands in that particular collection.
The table below displays each book band level and their equivalent reading age. Most children will work through the levels during the year, so for example, in most schools, a Reception child working at expected levels would end the year on yellow.

Whole Class Guided Reading
“The exciting range of literature and the associated teacher books provided in our Enjoy Whole Class Guided Reading series will help your pupils achieve the foremost goals of the reading curriculum: to ensure that children read with confidence and understanding, and fundamentally, ‘to establish an appreciation and love of reading’.”
Whole Class Guided Reading Teacher Books
Teacher notes are available as Teacher books or as an eBook Download and include the following:
• Medium-term overview: a list of national curriculum reading objectives linked to lesson plans.
• Half term plan for each title with built-in flexibility.
• Lesson plans for the whole story, with activities to develop reading skills.
• A selection of activities to help pupils discuss the content of the novel independently.
In most classrooms, guided reading sessions will be delivered using the carousel system of rotating small groups around each day to spend one session at least with the teacher. Many schools and literacy professionals are looking into alternative ways of delivering guided reading, and one system that stands out is whole class guided reading.
Whole class guided reading sessions involve the class sharing a book together over several sessions a week and across the half term. Children of all abilities get to share the same novel but independent activities can be differentiated accordingly. The book is read mostly by the teacher, whilst the children follow, with opportunities for them to read aloud too. In theory, a move from the carousel to the whole class approach could see each child benefitting from increased teaching time as five out of five sessions are with an adult. This approach also benefits the teacher by greatly reducing the time spent planning.
Teacher, and Badger Learning’s guided reading expert, Karen Moncrieffe, has visited many schools delivering whole class guided reading, and in response has created a super-useful Enjoy Whole Class
Guided Reading series. Very carefully selected novels for Years 3–6 are accompanied by teacher notes that plan every reading session, discussion and follow-up activity needed to easily adopt whole class guided reading in your school. All texts are age-appropriate with a level of challenge suitable for extending the understanding of pupils of varying abilities within a class.
• Follow-up activities: suggestions for using the text as a stimulus for writing, or activities linked to other areas of the curriculum.
• Tracking and assessment support.
• Differentiated activities so the whole class is involved in the lesson.
• PCMs: Photocopiable worksheets are provided to support some independent tasks and follow-up activities.
• Brief information on the author (and illustrator, if relevant).
• A book summary: a quick overview of the story.
• A chapter synopsis: this section breaks the book down into chapters to help familiarise teachers with unknown texts.
