This handsome stray Shepard mix knew just how to win over the hearts of animal advocates. No, it wasn’t his skills knowing how to sit and shake. It was Jacob’s smile that caught the attention of caregivers and visitors of The Haven. Jacob’s new family were smitten by his charm, love, and intelligence. Today, Jacob can be found relaxing or playing with his family in his large backyard.

Shawn Munro, Best Buy Store Manager in Spanish Fort, and his team, volunteered to help with some spring cleaning at our ReSale Shop. These hard-working animal advocates pressure washed various outdoor areas, trimmed the weeds and bushes, and put a fresh coat of paint on the interior walls. This project saved The Haven hundreds of dollars that was reallocated to help spay and neuter more homeless pets! Thank you to Shawn and his team!

ASK A VET WITH DR. MARSHALL, DVM PET WEIGHT MATTERS
A pet should have a waistline: a slight indentation from the ribs into the abdomen area. Run your hand lightly over the ribs and chest. If you can feel the ribs, that is a good sign. If you cannot feel the ribs without pushing really hard — you’ve got an overweight animal. Other signs include arthritis (especially in the back), breathing difficulties, grooming problems, and skin problems.
WHAT ARE THE GREATEST RISKS FOR OVERWEIGHT PETS?
Diabetes is our number one issue, with a high rate in cats. Then, arthritis due to extra weight on the joints. When animals gain weight, they have decreased lung capacity. Fatty liver syndrome is also an issue. For cats, skin issues, because they are unable to groom themselves.
HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR PET MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT?
Exercise, just like with people. Go for walks, even with the animals with arthritis. If they’re walking, they’re toning their muscles. Monitor their weight and figure. Adjust the amount of food you’re feeding them based on their weight. Also, adjust the suggested feeding amounts listed on food bags to the pet’s metabolic issues. Take into account activity level and the calories your pet needs. 15-HAVAL-0919-N
