ecently, two pairs of Haven animals found furever homes, giving their new families twice the affection and happiness!
Austin and Pansi After his owners could no longer give him the care he needed, Austin, a deaf seven-year-old shepherd mix, was returned to the Haven then adopted three weeks later. Pansi, an eight-year-old domestic shorthair, has been with the Haven since February 2009. The pair was adopted together by Ms.Weinberger of Fairhope, Alabama. Weinberger has been very happy to have this duo at home with her, saying that “Austin has been wonderful. Even though he is deaf he’s had no problem at all figuring out my routine and how to communicate. Sofie was my first Haven rescue. When recently I adopted Austin, they were best friends from day one. Austin is my big teddy bear of a dog, soft and cuddly. He gets along great with my other animals and he’s made himself at home like he’s always been here! Pansi cat is my friendly “lap kitty”. They bring me so much happiness. No matter how my work day goes, the kids make me smile. They are so glad to see me, it just makes my day. ”
Merry and Iggy Merry, a six-year-old Munchkin mix, and Iggy, a six-year-old domestic short hair, were adopted by Ms.Knowles of Grove Hill, Alabama. This lovable pair spent two months at The Haven after their foster home was unable to keep them any longer. These two cats have lived together for the past five years, and are now inseparable. Without Merry, Iggy seemed sad and was less affectionate. Separate, both became less social. Together, the two have settled in nicely at their new home, sleeping together just as they always have. Some things go better together. Dogs and bones. Cats and windowsills. Or two friends in one family. pring means spring cleaning and finding things you don’t use anymore or have never used. Things that someone else might want or need. A table. A brand new sandwich press. A box of your great aunt’s china. Find these and more gently used treasures at The Haven ReSale Shop.
Take a break from cleaning Saturday, May 17 for our annual Spring Yard Sale. The front yard will be blooming with great bargains from 8a.m. to 1p.m. Pick a bouquet of items including books, art, kitchenware and collectibles.
Additionally, beautiful plants and baked goodies will be for sale. You can browse through our shop which has upscale items like fine china, glassware, and jewelry. As always, the proceeds go to The Haven’s life-saving programs. The Haven ReSale Shop is open for shopping and accepting donations in clean, sellable condition Tuesday –Friday, 10a.m.-4p.m.

osing a pet is one of life’s saddest events. Imagine how hard it is for animal advocates who have to euthanize their charges based on lack of space or funds to treat illnesses. The Haven works with shelters all over Baldwin County to help prevent this loss of life.

“To create and sustain a no kill community you need to save those lives that are in danger of being destroyed now,” said Michael Graham, The Haven’s Executive Director. Many grants and funds have helped The Haven move toward this goal, including Maddie’s Fund and Best Friends Animal Society. The current focus is on Project S.A.F.E. {Saving Animals from Euthanasia}, a program designed to transform the lives of pets and people in Baldwin County.
And that’s just what it’s doing. “To date, we have helped over 5,200 homeless pets find a life-long loving home,” says Graham excitedly. He continues, “We won’t stop there. This year our goal is to raise our community’s live release rate by increasing our adoption incentives thanks to grants from funders such as Best Friends.”
Advocate Donations from citizens like you also go toward S.A.F.E. Dogs and cats transferred to The Haven need vaccinations, testing, spay/ neuter operations and sometimes medication. They also need food, a comfortable and enriching environment and all the things that go into getting them ready for potential adopters.

he most important action you can teach your dog is a sit.
Taught to sit reliably as soon as it is welcomed into your family, your dog will not jump on people or furniture unasked, and is less likely to bolt out a door. Teaching a sit enables your dog to learn self-control. A well-timed sit cue also lowers the chance of nuisance barking. In addition, a dog concentrating on holding a sit cannot be as open to chasing that cat across the road or making googlie-eyes at the cute poodle over there.
Start by luring your dog silently but with a small, yummy smelling treat. The dog will initially follow the treat, then your empty hand. Learning sit together is great bonding time for you and your dog, and having a dog silently follow your commands is sure to impress your friends. Frances is a *Certified Professional Dog Trainer, a graduate San Francisco Academy for Dog Trainers, and is also certified with the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. She donates her time and talent to The Haven’s Dog Walking Program by orienting and training new dog walkers. If you are intersted in becoming a volunteer dog walker, please contact our Volunteer Coodinator at jeuler@havenforanimals.org. Small Keys Open Big Doors by Joni Euler
K
eys – Those metal pieces we constantly misplace or lose altogether, but are so important to daily life. Everyone has a variety of keys. Though some we use more frequently than others, ALL are important or we would have no need of them. Haven animals have their very own special keys called VOLUNTEERS. These dedicated and caring individuals generously share their time and talents toward making The Haven a successful no-kill animal shelter. In whatever area they work, EVERY VOLUNTEER plays a KEY role in the lives of Haven animals. Now is the time to turn your key, unlock the door and explore the many opportunities for Haven Volunteers. Need retail therapy? Volunteer at the Resale Shop. Need to exercise? Become a dog walker. Love animals? Foster a fur baby. “A small key opens big doors”-a Turkish proverb.
