STONEWORK
“We were concerned that adding granite would be too busy for the rest of the wood in the home, so the suggestion of using a matte charcoal granite with a leathered texture was the perfect complement to the area.” – ANGIE JACKSON Client 6 H AV E N
STONE ARTISANS:
A 2020 VISION for Your Home
2020 has always had a good ring to it and many of us welcomed it with eagerness and fresh visions for our lives. A new year and a new decade bring a new perspective to life as did the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our daily schedules. As we all “hunkered down,” our lives changed dramatically. With work and school taking over our homes, it is important to carve out space for other day to day tasks. We need an area to enjoy a family favorite recipe and to share this special “stay at home” time. The dining room table or kitchen island may have laptops, books, file folders, and office supplies scattered about but it still needs to serve its intended purpose as a place where our families and friends can gather. Many of us have started to look for ways to organize these areas so life can retain some normalcy. We want to maintain the feel of our homes as inviting, comfortable and as peaceful as possible. Recently, the Jackson family, located in Nashville, Indiana reached out to the team at Stone Artisans. They were looking to expand their kitchen and update the countertops. The kitchen and living space were divided with a half wall and a small opening that blocked the living area from the kitchen. The design staff at Stone Artisans was quick to provide a creative solution. “The existing opening was narrow and was barely wide enough for a coffee cup. The installation crew cut the existing logs down to a comfortable height, added invisible supports, and finished it off with a beautiful granite countertop. This was exactly what the space needed. It was a very cost effective approach versus remodeling the entire kitchen,” said homeowner Angie Jackson. “The chisel edge profile on the countertop is a wonderful complement to our log cabin.” The rest of the kitchen countertops were also replaced with the same granite and an undercounter sink was also installed. “We love our new eat in bar and kitchen! The granite slabs the Stone Artisans helped us choose for our kitchen allowed us to maintain a rustic, yet clean look for our cabin,” said Jackson. “We were concerned that adding granite would be too busy for the rest of the wood in the home, so the suggestion of using a matte charcoal granite with a leathered texture was the perfect complement to the area.” Jackson also said about her experience working with Stone Artisans, “We are so thankful to have the perfect bar now and countertops that look remarkable as well. The Stone Artisan team was an absolute dream to work with, they made us feel comfortable with our decisions and helped us achieve the look we had hoped for in our kitchen.” Complete your 2020 vision for your remodel, new kitchen, or new bath with beautiful granite from Stone Artisans. CALIFORNIA CLOSETS:
Designing Comfortable
WORK SPACES for
Families By Matt Keating
Erin Moore, executive designer for California Closets Carmel Showroom, said with more families continuing to work from home, there has never been a better time for a new, more organized home design. California Closets Design Consultants collaborate with their clients to really uncover the design style and function that works best for them and their family. “This can be achieved by taking visual clues from around the house, having the client share any inspiration pictures, and ultimately from talking through the needs and desires for every space,” explained Moore. “Each client, family and project is unique and is designed with this in mind.” CALIFORNIA CLOSETS HELPS PEOPLE MAKE THEIR WORKSPACE MORE COMFORTABLE WITH FULLY CUSTOM DESIGNS. “We are able to achieve beautiful and functional designs that meet their family’s needs,” Moore said. “This could be multiple workspaces, stand-up desks, carefully thought out placement of multiple screens, or even the best lighting for Zoom calls!” Often work-from-home spaces morph into multi-use spaces that serve as a guest room via a wall bed, or also function as a craft space, art studio, or homework space. California Closets also offers so many amazing finishes and products that they can truly personalize any space, and even make it fun! “Add a pop of color, cool hardware, or a fun insert to a door to really make the space a place that you want to be in,” said Moore. “With the dramatic shift towards working from home, these need to be spaces that everyone is comfortable and excited to work in, and not a space that is dreaded.” 8 H AV E N
CALIFORNIA CLOSETS CAN ALSO HELP DESIGN A GREAT WORKSPACE FOR BOTH ADULTS AND KIDS. With their custom design approach, they can integrate the kids’ space into any area that works best for the client, making use of odd spots and unused areas in the home. “We have designed some great workstations that are independent areas and incorporated some into the adult offices for the kids to have a personalized and custom space for their E-learning needs where they can feel comfortable and inspired,” Moore continued. “Our virtual design process works great to achieve all of these items, allowing clients to visualize their space and see their designs from the comfort of their home!” Design your personalized work-from-home experience with California Closets in Carmel. Hard Surface Flooring

TILE IS IDEAL for both interior and exterior floors, but is an especially wise choice for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
1 0 H AV E N
When choosing the type of flooring you want to install, homeowners must take into consideration a number of things, including current trends, personal preference, durability, and one of the biggies – maintenance. If you’re looking for flooring that is clean, versatile, scratch & water resistant, and won’t fade, you may want to lean toward a tile floor. ACo, a Fishers-based remodeling company that specializes in flooring, cabinets, kitchens, and baths, carries a large selection of tile through several premier suppliers. Tile is ideal for both interior and exterior floors, but is an especially wise choice for high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you opt for ceramic, stone or glass tile, selections in colors, sizes and shapes are endless. Tile is fairly easy to care for and maintain with regular cleanings, though the finish and grout will last longer if you avoid harsh chemical cleaners. You may, however, have your heart set on a hardwood, and if that’s the case, ACo also has a wide array of options through leading vendors. Just keep in mind that hardwoods require more maintenance to keep them looking great. If you choose the right product and properly care for it, it can stay beautiful for lifetimes to come.

Duchateau, a brand carried by ACo, is known for manufacturing beautiful hardwood floors. Duchateau was the first to bring European-inspired wide-plank matte finishes to the U.S. market. Shannon Roark, a representative with Duchateau, notes that when the owners first started the company and were traveling to Europe, they were blown away by the 300-year-old floors they saw in chateaus and castles that looked perfectly new. That’s what they wanted to replicate. “The finish of our wood isn’t painted or stained on,” says Roark. “It’s a unique oil formula that our owners brought to the U.S. in 2005 that allows the wood to react to the sugars and tannins in the trees. Our motto is that we let nature be the best artist. In many ways, we unlock the DNA code of all these planks.” Unlike a polyethene that sits on and creates a plastic-like barrier, this oil penetrates the surface of the wood providing an extra layer of protection. This, in turn, keeps the dirt towards the surface, which allows the wood to stay healthier. According to Roark, the oil creates flexibility so that during the season, as the wood is expanding and contracting, the homeowner may keep the floors cleaner and more easily fix scratches. As Mia Farrell, a designer with ACo states, “Natural materials are so amazing. That’s why it’s important to work with them.” The state of hardwoods depends on a number of factors. For instance, do you wear shoes in the house? Do you have pets? Do you tend to open up the house in the summer to let in fresh air (because that also invites variance in
temperature and humidity)? Roark suggests performing a simple test that involves bouncing a couple of water droplets onto the wood. “If the droplets are still sitting and puddling – like on a waxed car, you don’t need to do anything,” he says. “If they absorb over time and create a grey temporary mark, you know it’s probably time to oil. There is no definite mark to put on the calendar. You just have to kind of judge it.” If you’re still struggling with making a decision on flooring, you can access ACo’s flooring visualizer that lets you “try out” various flooring options, including both tile and hardwood, on your computer, phone or tablet. “With this flooring visualizer, ACo offers you a real-time augmented reality experience that can completely transform the way you make your flooring decisions,” says David Decker, owner of ACo. With proper care and maintenance, tile and hardwood floors can be a cleaner, long-lasting option for your home. Feel free to stop by the new ACo Design Studio for inspiration and to view samples or take them home to see how they will look in your space. Schedule a consultation with one of their designers to help you coordinate all the selections to ensure you truly love where you live.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOME
BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER INDIANAPOLIS
President’s Message It seems like almost everything has changed over the past several months since the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in the United States and brought much of the country to a grinding halt. State Governors began to shut down segments of our economy and on March 24th, Indiana’s Stay at Home Order went into effect. While housing was deemed essential and our industry has remained operational throughout the order, all businesses have had to quickly adapt and make changes to their operations. As we noted in the last issue of Haven Magazine, members of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) were able to adapt and implement innovative virtual selling techniques that have given consumers multiple options for shopping and purchasing new homes. Homebuyers have responded remarkably well to these opportunities to buy homes in this new, non-traditional, and virtual environment. Builders across the market have noted steady and exciting increases, on a week over week basis, in new home sales since the initial impact of the virus hit in March. In fact, it appears that the typical spring selling season was pushed back but is now in full swing as buyers are looking to new homes to escape some of the challenges they may have faced during their shelter in place. The flexibility of a new home, coupled with historically low interest rates, provides one of the best times to get out and buy a new home. So, please be sure to visit our website at BAGI.com to find your new home solution where you can find a builder, find a new home, find a remodeler, or find a supplier. With school being completed and summer now upon us, we are excited to highlight in this month’s issue the recipients of this year’s annual scholarships. Six students who are looking to pursue careers in the home building industry in Central Indiana have been awarded Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis Scholarships. Congratulations to the winners! As we highlighted earlier in the year, BAGI is excited to host this year’s First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama at Holliday Farms in Zionsville this fall. The homes are under construction and the participating builders are excited to be able to showcase their design and construction talents during this year’s event. Save the date and look for more details as you will not want to miss what is expected to be one of the largest and best Home-A-Rama events in the Indianapolis area.
BAGI recently awarded scholarships to six recipients in order to encourage students to pursue careers in the home building industry in the Central Indiana area. Since 1989, the program has awarded $384,350 to 331 recipients.

Finally, please see more information in this issue regarding the many membership benefits that BAGI provides. Covid-19 has disrupted all of our lives, but the resources and benefits of being a member are never more important than now. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:
Tools to Increase
Productivity by Courtney Walker Pope and HAOI Blog
Local professional home services group, Home Artisans of Indiana, has cultivated a program of key topics at bi-weekly meetings to engage and educate their members. It is common to have a guest speaker leading the discussion, but other weeks it is a collective of ideas, brainstorming and support between the members. Productivity is a highly discussed topic and HAOI is sharing their tools for gaining more time in your business and life!
1
Time is a person’s greatest asset, so start each morning with a to-do list and prioritize from what needs to get done versus what feels good to get done. Can you delegate any tasks to a team member? Can you knock a couple off to gain momentum for more daunting tasks?
2
Keep Parkinson’s Law in mind. This is the theory “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
3
Before instantly committing to anything, consider the benefit. Do you really need to do it? Will it divert time, energy, and resources to activities that are not mission-critical in some way?
4
Consider joining Home Artisans of Indiana to work on your business rather than just in it! Longtime member, Christina Garten of Christina’s Complete Clean finds tremendous value in the opportunity to “strategize with others and gain insight on how other home improvement companies operate.”
For more tips and insight to productivity and other business-related topics, visit homeartisans.com/productivity or request an invitation to attend a Home Artisans bi-weekly meeting and experience it for yourself! 2 0 H AV E N

LAWN MAINTENANCE
POOP BUSTERS INDY:
Doing the Dirty Work SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN by Christy Heitger-Ewing
There’s no question that the past few months have brought waves of confusion and uncertainty to our lives. Some things, however, remain unchanged. “One thing is sure. Our dogs are still doing their business,” says Will Rice, sales associate of Poop Busters Indy, a locally owned lawncare service based in Carmel that specializes in pet waste removal. At 16, Kieran Thomas, owner of Poop Busters Indy, began working for a pet waste removal business before launching his own company with the help of his friend Rice. Their motto is, “They poop it, we scoop it.” This fall Rice and Thomas, both 2020 graduates of Carmel High School, are pursuing business degrees at Indiana University and University of Southern California, respectively. But this summer, they are eager to let homeowners and homeowner’s associations know that if you’re tired of dodging doggy bombs in your yard, they are here to help. “We are always prepared to remove any and all pet waste and provide our clients a clean and pristine lawn,” says Rice. “It takes more than a good attitude to get the job done, and Poop Busters is more than willing to search for and remove all doggy droppings in your yard or neighborhood common areas.” The built-up concentration of pet waste is not only unappealing as no one wants to see, smell or step in it, but according to Thomas, it can attract insects and damage the subsoil chemical balance of one’s lawn. If you’re looking for professional and reliable pet waste removal, call Poop Busters Indy today. For more information, visit poopbustersindy.com, email poopbustersindy@gmail.com or call 317.689.8527 for a free quote.

ECO-FRIENDLY We love our dogs, but their droppings make more than a mess — they're also an environmental pollutant and a human health hazard. When left on the ground, waste eventually breaks down and washes into the water supply, polluting our rivers, streams, creeks, and other local waterways. Keep your yard healthy and let us take care of it.

“People spend a good deal of money on their vehicle, and they should go the extra step and install a charging station at home for their convenience.”
As electric cars become increasingly more popular, home electric car charging stations become not just a convenience but a necessity. David Burtner of Burtner Electric, Inc., says proper installation of electric car chargers is essential for safety and keeping your home up to code. “People spend a good deal of money on their vehicle, and they should go the extra step and install a charging station at home for their convenience,” Burtner says. “When people purchase electric vehicles, they often think that they will just re-charge them at the shopping centers, or at their place of employment,” Burtner continues. “We can install your outlet in your – DAVID BURTNER garage for convenient overnight charging. This is especially the case Owner, Burtner Electric with recent events that are causing people to stay home more and primarily work from home.” Burtner notes that this type of outlet should not be done by a handyman or homeowner. Having a professional do your car-charger installations will also ensure that the work is done safely and correctly. Certified and licensed electricians at Burtner Electric will wire your charger according to code. A faulty homemade wiring job can be costly or deadly. Homeowners or handymen could cause a fire or other electrical problems in other parts of a home if it is not done right. Burtner noted that certified and licensed electricians also take necessary precautions and are up to date on current standards. If someone doesn’t meet code requirements with their own homemade wiring, they could also fail to pass a future home or electrical inspection. Plug- in electrical vehicles (PEV) also require different power chargers, according to Burtner. A residential PEV charger can run off 120-volt or 240-volt power, based on the styles of the chargers. “That’s why it’s so important to have a professional do your PEV installation,” Burtner says. “It’s also so much more convenient to charge your car at home.” BURTNER ELECTRIC 787 N 10th Street If you are considering or have recently purchased an electric vehicle, Noblesville, IN 46060 contact Burtner Electric at 317-773-7663 or visit BurtnerElectric.com to 317.773.7663 install an electric car charger station in your home. “COVID-19 has put so much on hold, including looking for a new home. People are saying, ‘Hey, we need a bigger home.’ People are working from home more than ever before. There is a lot of pent-up demand to find a new home.” – PHIL HOTLE RE/MAX At The Crossing

RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:
PENT-UP DEMAND Will Drive the Summer Real Estate Market by Matt Keating
Many families are looking for a new home these days after realizing they need more living and work-fromhome office space – and that will drive the summer real estate market. Phil Hotle with RE/MAX At The Crossing added that people are starting to get back into their normal routines, which includes finding a new home. “COVID-19 has put so much on hold, including looking for a new home,” Hotle said. “People are saying, ‘Hey, we need a bigger home.’ People are working from home more than ever before. There is a lot of pent-up demand to find a new home.” Because of COVID-19, the spring real estate market, which would have been March through July, has been pushed back to June through early fall. Many people will want to be settled into their new home before the holiday season begins. Younger families have come to the realization that they need more rooms for E-Learning and Zoom calls for work and school. Spaces where family members can go to get away from the household noise and don’t have to talk over each other. Empty nesters are realizing they may want a home that will accommodate multiple visits from their kids and grandchildren as people spend more time together
at home and less time in public spaces. “I call it right sizing instead of downsizing.” Hotle says. “People may want a bigger dining room to accommodate their family dinners or provide a nice workspace. They also might want a bigger basement or recreation room for the grandkids.” Instead of looking for an existing home, people may wish to build a new home. The new home sales and construction segment of the market is also thriving, and a realtor can help you navigate that process. Whether purchasing and selling a current home or building a new home, Phil Hotle of RE/MAX At The Crossing is here to provide guidance with your next real estate transaction, contact him at 317-919-8504.

“PAIR’D Furnishings has unique offerings, the ability to customize, and an emphasis on art… what’s not to love?”
ast year Amer Karim and his wife Muniza, traveled from Bangladesh to visit their collegeaged son, who was studying in Indiana. The couple, who started Legacy Furniture 26 years ago, fell in love with the Carmel community, the lush green spaces that the Hoosier state offered and the myriad shopping opportunities in the area. After stumbling upon an empty 2,500 sq. ft. showroom in the Indiana Design Center, they decided to lease the space and open a flagship furniture store, which they named PAIR’D Furnishings. In May 2019, the couple hired Stephanie Riwitis to create the collection and open up the showroom. Over the past year, Riwitis and her lead designer Evan Courter have stayed busy as they prepared for the grand opening, which was scheduled for May, complete with a fancy dinner, live music and dynamite guest speakers who are national designers. However, the pandemic caused them to press pause on the party and now they plan to host their grand opening in conjunction with the Haven summer cover party. “The collection has been designed specifically for us so there’s a lot of variation in styling,” says Riwitis, noting that customers can expect to see a lot of classic designs but with a modern twist as they take inspiration from classic pieces & modern trends, then merge together. “You’ll see Mid-Century pieces but with modern fabrics and finishes and different lines – all customizable.” July 2020 3 1
“PAIR’D has a stunning upscale showroom with unique furnishings that anyone would fall head over heels for. Their experienced designers are always a pleasure to work with!” – KALI DeWITT PAIR’D Furnishings client
They delight in the fact that their furniture truly doesn’t look like anybody else’s. Because PAIR’D Furnishings is the manufacturer, there is no middleman. “Amer can send me whatever we ask him to,” says Riwitis. “[Our design collections] create spaces with functional identity, balancing comfort level with visual impact, new innovations and old charm,” adds Muniza. Currently, the owners have a furniture designer in Bangladesh who is working on the fall collection. PAIR’D Furnishings’ showroom features local artists such as Angie Brooks, a contemporary abstract expressionistic painter, as well as international artists like 3 2 H AV E N
Marco Querin, a visual, abstract contemporary artist from Milano, Italy. Querin specializes in creating unique string art according to Riwitis. “He gets fibers from all over the world and nails tons of miniature nails on boards and pulls string across all these different designs,” she says. In their showroom, they also sell vintage rugs, a soy candle line created by a local candle company and have several one-of-a-kind artifacts from Bangladesh, including brass bowls that are hundreds of years old. “We have our own textile company in Bangladesh, and we have a lot of those textiles cut and put into frames. Those are here also,” says Ritwitis, reiterating

again that customers won’t come across anything in the store that they’ve seen elsewhere. Though they have some vendors that sell accessories, the first thing Courter does is check to make sure the items are not sold anywhere else in the state. Courter works with Riwitis on all design projects. He also sets up the showroom design, chooses the pieces & accessories and handles marketing. Though they work with retail clients, their main focus is trade clients. “We will sell retail at retail prices but won’t do sales or promos,” explains Ritwitis. “Trade clients, when registered with us, will get a nice trade discount, and they will have the ability to do customization if they like.” The PAIR’D showroom features a truly distinctive collection that inspires rave reviews. “PAIR’D has a stunning upscale showroom with unique furnishings that anyone would fall head over heels for,” says PAIR’D client Kali DeWitt. “Their experienced designers are always a pleasure to work with!” Diane Dinges, Showroom Consultant at Ferguson Enterprises, is always impressed by what she finds every time she tours PAIR’D Furnishings’ showroom. “PAIR’D has a fabulous staff with amazing, unique selection from art, portables to furniture,” says Dinges. “It’s a must see in Carmel.” Alex Cain, Trade Representative at Tisdel Distributing, Inc., is equally smitten with all that PAIR’D offers to trade designers and retail clients. “[They have] unique offerings, the ability to customize, and an emphasis on art…what’s not to love?” says Cain. In the future, they plan to make their collections available in brick and mortar stores like Kittles, Macys and Ethan Allen. For now, they are delighted for some of their furnishings to be featured in one of the 2020 Fall Home-A-Rama homes. If you want exceptional furnishings and exclusive designs to create one-of-a-kind spaces in your home or for your clients, the collection at PAIR’D Furnishings may be just what you are looking for. CARRINGTON HOMES:
When Families Need More Space:
Carrington Homes Offers Excellent Creativity & Client Communication by Matt Keating
3 6 H AV E N
NOT ENOUGH SPACE IN YOUR HOME? Families may be looking to build a larger home to accommodate more room for a new home office, a study/quiet area for the kids, an additional bedroom or even a family entertainment room.
Spending more time at home means families these days may be realizing they need a lot more space. After the last few months, with more parents working from home, kids with e-learning, Zoom calls, etc., the need to build a new house, or remodel their current home, has become glaringly apparent. Families may be looking to build a larger home to accommodate more room for a new home office, a study/quiet area for the kids, an additional bedroom or even a family entertainment room. Carl McIntyre, president of Carrington Homes in McCordsville, said that with the current housing market, there has never been a better time to build a new custom home. “The interest rates on mortgages are low, and existing houses are selling quickly,” McIntyre said. “If you want to build a new house, we can determine and deliver exactly the home you want. We are known for our outstanding client communications.”
Established in 1992 by Chuck, Sandy, and Carl McIntyre, Carrington Homes has a solid reputation as a builder that emphasizes integrity and excellence. “We also offer excellent remodeling work,” McIntyre stated. “We recently remodeled homes in the Crooked Stick and Meridian/Kessler areas, along with many other large-scale home renovations.” When choosing various options for both the interior and exterior of a client’s dream home, ingenuity of design is one of their many specialties. Over the past several years, Carrington Homes has focused on whole home renovation projects. “Our excellent architectural designers and interior designers can work with you to build the home of your dreams,” McIntyre said. RENOVATION & REMODELING
ACo:
The Cost of
LOVING WHERE YOU LIVE by Courtney Walker Pope and ACo Blog / photos by Dave Pluimer
As we have spent more time in our homes the past four months, it’s likely we have daydreamed about remodeling an outdated kitchen or bathroom. Whether it be functionality or simply aesthetics, ACo wants to help you “love where you live”. The general idea of a remodel can be scary during these times – from cost to health and safety throughout the process, ACo is here to help guide you with a budget and design plan – virtually or in-person. BUDGET One of the most common questions ACo receives during a new client consult is “how much will my kitchen or bath remodel cost?” People want to know what they can expect to spend on a remodel and where that money is going. Understanding how much a project will cost will help determine the scope of the project and if financing is needed. To make your project more transparent and relatable to your home, ACo has created several online tools based on over 15 years of data to help ease any uncertainty about cost. From home value input to percentages for each renovation category, you can adjust the sliding scale to calculate what and how you should consider spending. This information can serve as guidelines to help you determine an appropriate remodeling budget and understand where the costs lie. Having this information can help you decide if it is the right time to remodel. “For a complete kitchen remodel, we encourage budgeting between 8-18% of your home’s value and 6-15% for a master bathroom remodel,” writes CEO and founder of ACo, David Decker. Head to liveaco.com/calculate-yourkitchen-remodel-budget for more details on how to budget your next project. When planning your remodel, it is important to consider how long you intend to stay in your home. If you think you will be selling within the next five years, you will want to look at any improvements as an investment. However, if you are planning on staying in your current home for longer, choose updates that will make you happy for many years to come. 3 8 H AV E N

GARAGE DOORS
PRECISION DOOR SERVICE OF INDIANAPOLIS:
CHOOSING THE RIGHT
Garage Door Opener by Matt Keating
4 0 H AV E N
Choosing the right garage door opener may not seem like a complicated decision, but Joel Belyew, president of Precision Door Service of Indianapolis, says there are innovative options and certain features homeowners need to consider. NOISE: “Do you really need the entire house to vibrate and wake up the kids every time it opens?” Belyew asks. “No. Garage door openers today go anywhere from loud and obnoxious, to virtually silent.”
POWER: This can be somewhat overrated. Every garage door is equipped with a counterbalance system (springs) that when working properly, should render the doors weight neutral. While you don’t want an underpowered unit, there is also rarely a need to go over ¾ to 1HP. Some manufacturers know that consumers are drawn to things like higher HP and equate that to quality and use that to their advantage.
compatible. The Amazon option allows Amazon delivery drivers to open your garage door, put your packages inside, and then close the door behind them. “We now even have an opener that has a built-in HD camera that can record events such as Amazon Key delivery, if you are concerned what the driver might also do once they have access,” Belyew said. AUTO-CLOSE: Have you ever left the house and wondered if you had closed the garage door? Or even worse, you came home after being gone all day, only to realize the garage door was open? Or maybe even when you go to leave in the morning, and realize the garage door was open all night? “This is my favorite option,” Belyew stated. “WiFi gives you the ability to check if ‘you remember, you forgot,’ but auto close is working independently for you. Some garage door openers are equipped with this feature and allow you to choose the time it will remain open, before closing itself.” SIDE MOUNTED: These are also known as jackshafts and are both low maintenance and space efficient.
BATTERY BACKUP: If you get home in a thunderstorm and the power is out, wouldn’t it be great if your garage door still opened with a push of the remote? The likelihood of this happening may be low, but it’s a feature you’ll be glad you have if you ever need it. WIFI CONNECTIVITY: Some homeowners want WiFi Connectivity, but how connected, if at all, do you want to be? The options are anywhere from not WiFi connected, to smartphone access, or ‘Amazon Key’
DO IT YOURSELF VS. PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED: “When it comes to garage door openers, many handy homeowners are capable of a working installation,” Belyew said. If you know what you are doing, you could save up to $200 or $300, but is it worth the frustration and safety risks? “We have heard many stories and seen some carnage, continued Belyew. “The most overlooked value of using a professional is that they know everything about how the door works, and they understand the relationship between the door and the opener.” An improperly working door is often the cause of garage door opener
"The most overlooked value of using a professional is that they know everything about how the door works, and they understand the relationship between the door and the opener.” – JOEL BELYEW President, Precision Door Service of Indianapolis
failure. If that primary problem isn’t addressed, the new opener could meet a similar fate. “If you do go professional, do your research and be wary of the ‘cheaper’ bid,” said Belyew. “Skilled labor isn’t cheap, and cheap labor isn’t skilled.” When it is time to choose a new garage door opener, Precision Door can help you evaluate the best options for your door, your budget, and your lifestyle. SIGMA BUILDERS:
Only the Best: Sigma Builders Partners With McComb Pella to Build Superior Custom Homes by Christy Heitger-Ewing
It’s been an exciting year for Sigma Builders. An exciting several years actually. Not only did Home Builder Digest name Sigma Builders “Best Contemporary Build in the State” but the company has also been named “#1 Custom Home Builder in the State” for the past four years running. This is due, in part, to the fact that they work closely with trusted vendors like McComb Pella Windows & Doors. Nearly four years ago, Dave Berman, with his partners Peter and Kimberley Wang created Sigma Builders, locally owned and operated out of Carmel. “We had a vision to change the custom home building experience,” states Berman, a Hoosier native who has worked in home building and development sector in Indianapolis nearly his entire career. “Coming from that world, I saw an opportunity to improve the platform.” Their objective was to leverage technology and bring speed and efficiency to the homeowner while never jeopardizing quality to their custom home building experience. They have done so by assembling a dedicated staff of 15 associates who all focus on complete customer satisfaction. This includes Stephanie Wiott, Sigma Builder’s Interior Designer and Owner of Cupboard Design Group. The Sigma team utilizes 3D software to virtually show their clients the final result of their home. (Incidentally, they create plans and designs without a required deposit.) Then throughout the build process, Sigma Builders coordinates all construction elements, schedule, and trades through an integrated online system, giving homeowners access to that file.
“When you look at the home, all you see is windows, and that’s intentional.” – DAVE BERMAN Sigma Builders 4 2 H AV E N
Sigma Builder’s 2020 Fall Home-A-Rama home in Holliday Farms.
“It’s an interactive real time process,” says Berman. “It’s not a watered-down experience. It really gives homeowners the ability to virtually see, touch and feel their home in a whole new way.” “Through these interactive design sessions, the homeowner can see, design and price their home in days or weeks vs months and months.” Another aspect that sets Sigma Builders apart is that they have their own realty company, which enables them to capture market data and use that data as a guiding light. That means that as clients are going through the design process, they have a better understanding of what features to include (e.g., a 4-car garage, four bathrooms vs. five) that align with the market. Sigma Builder’s relationship with McComb Pella Windows & Doors has been longstanding due to Pella’s exceptional products and top-notch team. “Pella has a wonderful name in the industry, and everyone we talk to, from the sales rep to the service guy to delivery people, are always outstanding,” says Doug Kelly, VP of Sales & Marketing at Sigma Builders. Kelly notes that whenever Pella provides a quote for a project, they look at it from a homeowner’s perspective, providing recommendations for how to improve upon certain rooms or views. “They might say, ‘Hey, we have this new product that will fit beautifully in this area over here,’” explains Kelly. “Pella is a great partner when we are building because their goal is to make the home even better than what we would envision.” Berman adds, “They are so interactive with us, optimizing windows and pricing to make sure we are creating the best value for the customer.” Currently, Sigma Builders is building a magnificent 8,000-sq. ft. home with modern Tudor architecture that will be part of the 2020 Fall Home-A-Rama homes in Holliday Farms. “We pulled out all the stops with this 6-bedroom home,” states Berman. It includes a party room above the 4-car garage, a bourbon room with a two-sided fireplace and a balcony that overlooks the courtyard with spectacular golf course views. The home features four kitchens – one downstairs, one on the main floor, one in the party room, and one outside. Topping off the luxury are incredible landscapes and hardscapes because the outdoor living component was a huge focal point in the design of this home. They installed a Smart Pergola over the 250-sq. ft. party deck which has electronic louvers that can be opened or closed the roof with the push of a button. “When you look at the home, all you see is windows, and that’s intentional,” says Berman. “We spent a lot of time making sure that the outdoor living blended harmoniously with the indoor architecture, and flawless windows are a huge part of making that possible.” Learn more about building a spectacular custom home with a modern building experience with Sigma builders, visit them online at sigmabuildersllc.com.

ENTERTAINING
EVOKE EVENTS:
SMALL PARTY, BIG FEEL: Entertaining at Home in a Post-Pandemic World
4 4 H AV E N
Your home isn’t a home until it’s full of friends and family, but that has not been happening recently because you just don’t have the space to fit all your favorite people in it and keep them social distancing… but don’t fret! You don’t have to have a mansion to make the best use of your space! With a little preparation, you can have an event that’s big even when it’s small. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
3. USE OUTDOOR SPACE: If you can take advantage of good weather and you have even a little bit of outdoor space, use it! Extend the party to use these areas for socializing or for beverages. Decorate the outdoors in the same theme to stay cohesive.
1. LIGHTEN UP: A well-lit space – artificial or natural – will always look larger. Transfer out heavy draperies and use sheer curtains on your windows. Add lamps and swap out harsh lighting for bulbs with soft, light hues. Store dark color throw pillows and bring out small, light or cool-colored shams that make the room feel airy.
4. STRATEGICALLY FEED A CROWD: If you’ve got more people than table space, get creative about your food placement. Serve hors d’oeuvres in settings around the party space to give guests a chance to mingle while they eat. Rent a dining table with larger leaves than you have at home to extend your dinner tablespace.
2. DECLUTTER. TIMES 10: Stash, stash, stash! Store unused kitchen appliances in closets or bedrooms and keep remotes, magazines, games and books in a space that will be unused during the party. Removing these items, even for a short while, will make your room feel bigger.
Experiment with different furniture arrangements or move a cumbersome set of accent chairs to another room. A posh party or event with family and friends is completely possible with a little experimentation and creativity. G&G CUSTOM HOMES:
Growth & Gratitude: G&G CUSTOM HOMES GOING STRONG AFTER 17 YEARS IN BUSINESS by Christy Heitger-Ewing
4 6 H AV E N
Originally from northwest Indiana, Joe Garcia earned a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University before going to work at U.S. Steel in Gary. After moving to Indianapolis in 2001 to work as an engineer at Eli Lilly, Garcia built his own house and a seed was planted. “I was ready for a career change and was itching to start my own business,” says Garcia, who erected a few spec homes on the side for a couple of years before diving, full-time, into the business in 2005. “I left Eli Lilly in May, and my wife and I had our first baby on the way in December so people thought I was nuts to leave a stable job with insurance and all of that, but I knew I loved building homes so I went ahead and made the jump,” says Garcia, who, along with his wife launched G&G Custom Homes in May 2005, building beautiful custom homes on Indy’s northside. “I figured if I fell flat on my face, I could always go back and get a corporate job,” says Garcia. It turns out, he didn’t need a Plan B. Though the recession in 2008 and 2009 spelled doom for a number of builders who were left with too much inventory, Garcia fared well. In fact, his business started to grow. Early on in his career, Garcia made sure not to bite off more than he could chew so he only built four or five homes each year. “Back then I was doing everything myself,” says Garcia. He has since hired two project managers and a designer who works with the clients, enabling him to build 10 to 12 homes a year and still carve out precious time to spend with his wife and two sons.
“I think our clients appreciate the personable service,” says Garcia, who notes that though clients spend a lot of time with his designer making physical selections, he is still the main point of contact for his homeowners. “I’m the one they meet with up front, at the very end, and lots of walk-throughs in between.” Garcia always utilizes the same sub-contractors and suppliers because that is the team he’s put together and whom he trusts whole-heartedly. “I’m only as good as the people I have working with me, and I hire the best,” says Garcia. “The vendors, contractors, designer, and project managers – we are the perfect fit to provide our clients with their dream home.” Garcia says that nothing pleases him more than when he gets feedback from homeowners about how much they love their homes. “Especially now, during the pandemic, where everybody is spending extra time inside their homes,” says Garcia. “It’s great to know that my clients are happy with the end result.” G&G Custom Homes has come a long way over the past 17 years. This year they are building one of the 2020 Fall Home-A-Rama homes in Holliday Farms in Zionsville. In addition to Holliday Farms, G&G builds in two other vibrant northside communities. These neighborhoods feature amenities such as large lots, ponds, streams, creeks, wooded areas, golf courses designed by the legendary course architect Pete Dye, parks, playgrounds, social meeting areas, such as clubhouses, miles of nature trails, and more. They are also able to build on your lot and integrate all the features and elements you have

always dreamed of. G&G is experienced in building a wide variety of styles, in a wide variety of settings. CUSTOM CONCRETE:
Need More Living Space? Consider an Addition or Outdoor Expansion with Custom Concrete by Courtney Walker Pope
Given the climate of this year to-date, some families and residences might have begun the conversation of additional space for their family! Room additions and small exterior structures may be just one of Custom Concrete’s many specialties, but it’s also one of their favorites! “We like being able to say ‘Yes’ to our client’s needs and this is one of our divisions catering specifically to room additions, pergolas, back porches and retaining walls,” explained Jason Ells, Senior Vice President of Custom Concrete. Smaller scale, residential projects usually means tying into an already existing structure. Lead Superintendent Jake Koepsky explains why his crew is up for the challenge, “I love that we are able to adapt to every situation. Working with the original home can be tricky, but we have the expertise, knowledge and training to do such!” On an even more personal level, when it comes to work on an established property, a construction crew becomes your family for a few weeks! A customer might be present for a majority of Custom Concrete’s work and that can mean your kids are playing in the yard, you are cooking dinner, or maybe coming home from work to see the daily progress. It is important to hire the right company to integrate into your everyday living. With Custom Concrete’s overall professionalism, 50-year experience backing, and local support to many non-profit initiatives, they are the company you’d truly consider ‘family’! WINDOW TREATMENTS
Window treatments can be both beautiful and functional. You don’t have to sacrifice!
DRAPERY STREET:
Common Window Treatment
MISTAKES
5 0 H AV E N
Window treatments can complement the décor of space, they can contribute to a light and airy atmosphere, or add drama to a bold aesthetic. However, the wrong window treatment could make your spaces feel cramped, clash with your homes style, or worse, look like an unfinished afterthought. Don’t fall victim to these common window treatment mistakes! MISTAKE #1 Using a variety of window treatments in your home adds style and interest.
PUTTING THE SAME TREATMENTS IN EVERY ROOM Each room in your home has different lighting, privacy, and design needs. A one-sizefits-all approach will leave you frustrated and disappointed. Consider the needs of each room and choose your window treatments accordingly. For example, you may decide on blackout treatments for the bedrooms, privacy treatments for the bathrooms, beautiful non-functional drapes for the dining room, motorized shades for your two-story window, and economical blinds in the garage. MISTAKE #2 SACRIFICING DESIGN FOR FUNCTIONALITY OR VICE VERSA Don’t choose between design or function when you can have both! The right products can be both beautiful and functional. There are gorgeous options that can provide privacy without blocking views. There are stunning shades that beautifully diffuse light without making a room too dark. Don’t assume that you must sacrifice your views, privacy, or light control to get the look you want. With the right products in the right applications, you can have it all! MISTAKE #3 NOT CONSIDERING STREET VIEWS Yes, your window treatments should look great inside your home, but don’t forget about how they look from the street, too! Think about how your windows will appear from the outside when the window treatments are closed. If possible, coordinate the color of your exterior window frame trim to the color of your blinds or lining of your shades and drapes. MISTAKE #4 WAITING TOO LATE IN THE HOMEBUILDING PROCESS TO PRE-WIRE OR RECESS TREATMENTS Window treatments should be on your
mind the first time you view your blueprints, particularly if you want to motorize or recess your window treatments. Pre-wiring allows you to forgo retrofitted wires and bulkier battery packs, allowing for a low-profile installation. Recessing allows window treatments to virtually disappear into the trim when they are not in use. The build process is your one and only chance to ensure power supplies are located in the right locations and pocket sizes are correct for recessed treatments.
Modern shades with minimalistic features diffuse light and provide privacy.

MISTAKE #5 ASSUMING WINDOW TREATMENTS CAN’T BE MODERN OR MINIMALISTIC Many people incorrectly believe you need to avoid window treatments to obtain a minimalist look. When you skip window treatments, you miss out on the many benefits they offer like privacy and light control. Don’t live in a fishbowl! Instead, choose modern shades with minimalistic features that diffuse light and provide privacy.

SILVERTHORNE HOMES: DESIGNING A DREAM HOME TO PERFECTLY FIT YOUR NEEDS
Silverthorne Homes Sets the Bar High by Christy Heitger-Ewing / Photograpy by Angel Guell Photography

When Caitie O’Dougherty started discussions with her realtor about building, he set up meetings with three different companies. Silverthorne, founded in 2006 as a custom division of Arbor homes, was first on the list. With a focus on serving the needs of the experienced homebuyer, Silverthorne has grown to be a Top-12 builder by volume in Indianapolis, and their average sales price for an On Your Lot build is around $385,000, which includes the price of the lot. “I knew leaving that first meeting with Deidre [at Silverthorne] that I’d found what I was looking for,” says O’Dougherty. “Deidre was much more interested in getting to know me and my needs than she was selling me the most expensive home, and she was very tuned in to how Silverthorne could help me meet those needs.” O’Dougherty knew she wanted a first-floor studio for her glass etching. Though she had never previously considered building a ranch, Deidre explained that their Reagan floorplan would perfectly suit that vision. “She was 100% right,” says O’Dougherty, who ultimately built a 3,072 sq. ft. 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath ranch with an upstairs bonus room and a tandem garage, which was customized to become her art studio. She loves the entire house, though from a “wow-factor” standpoint, she points to the stunning coffered ceiling in the great room. “Silverthorne is unique because we marry production-builder processes with the quality of stick-built construction, all with a personalized building experience,” says Nathan Custer, Director of Sales for Silverthorne Homes. “Because we draw each home from scratch, offer a number of different ways to configure any of our floorplans, and stick build, we are able to customize each plan to suit our homebuyers’ tastes and needs.” Silverthorne has six modeled communities on all sides of Indianapolis, including Noblesville, Brownsburg, Bargersville, Geist, McCordsville, and Pendleton. Whether you are still searching for a lot or already have land, Silverthorne can help you build your dream home in your dream setting. They EVEN purchase the lot and finance the build so there’s NO “Construction to Perm” loan required. “We’ve introduced convenience to the on your lot build experience,” says Custer. O’Dougherty, who calls the building process an indescribable joy, says Silverthorne exceeded her expectations. “They are a highly communicative team and work with you to make sure you get the home you want,” she says. “They were in my corner every step of the way.” Get Silverthorne Homes in your corner to build your custom home, visit them online at silverthornehomes.com or call 317-806-2190 to learn more.
