Homes in the Heartland:

THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF HOOSIER WOMEN BUILDERS

“They are the [durable houses] that will stand against the winds and floods and rains of changing fashion. For they are founded upon the rock of good taste,” reads a 1900s pamphlet from Fort Wayne architectural firm Wildwood, which was co-founded by female architects Joel Roberts Ninde and Grace Crosby. Many of the 300+ homes they designed over a century ago are still standing today.

The ethos of these female builders speaks to modern ambitions– where Indiana is at a critical housing deficit, with a worker shortage to match. As the building industry works toward the over 1 million homes needed to fill the housing shortage, women builders will be the ones pushing the industry forward with every home they touch.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that women make up only 10% of workers in the US construction industry, the door is more open than ever before to young women wanting to enter the trades. Karen Shreves and Beth Carey, co-owners of Midwest Remodeling alongside their mother, have spent the past several years working with the Build Your Future program through the Indiana Construction Roundtable Foundation to introduce middle schoolers to possible careers in the trades.

“There’s so many lucrative careers available, and that’s the experience we want to convey,” says Shreves. “There’s an extreme skilled worker shortage here in Indiana. We’re going to be in hot water, and you’re already starting to see it.”

As early as the late 1800s and early 1900s, women architects and engineers like Effie Schoen-Morgan and Josephine Woodbury made their mark around Indianapolis and beyond.

One of the enduring selling points for women builders throughout our history is “homes from a woman’s perspective”, a phrase still commonly heard from clients of female architects, painters, tilers and interior designers.

Talented, intelligent women are easy to find in the building industry. However, women builders are no strangers to pushback and criticism.

Carlie Suskie of the Design and Sales team at ACo knows that the days of criticism aren’t so far behind us, “When I entered the world of remodeling, it was primarily a male-dominated industry. I remember showing up to appointments and the client asking, ‘Will there be a man coming too?’”

Inspiration from others, especially her mother and coworkers, are the factors that pushed Suskie through moments like that. It’s important to have a strong network when you’re potentially the only woman in the room Monday through Friday.

Events like the recent Women Build It conference are offering

women opportunities to focus on collaboration and networking with their peers.

Keynote Speaker Emily Shaw of Lushin spoke on methods for combatting Imposter Syndrome in a male dominated field. “Statistically speaking, those who experience imposter syndrome are more likely to be qualified for their role than those who don’t,” Shaw says. “It’s hard to imagine a future where the issues women face are completely gone, but it’s possible for there to be a room full of women who are all confident in being there. That’s possible today.”

Diana Daniely, Outside Builder Sales at Ferguson Enterprises, emceed the annual single day conference.

“As a woman in corporate America working in a male-dominated industry, it’s incredibly important to participate in conferences that represent women and the building industry,” says Daniely. “Having women in construction is crucial for fostering innovation, improving workplace culture, and addressing labor shortages.”

So what future are Hoosier women hoping to create for the building industry?

An industry that welcomes all. One that makes space for people to live their lives affordably and comfortably. Designs that will last for another 150 years. Buildings that are a testament to the Heartland, and all the promise it has to offer.

2024 BAGI Board President

I can’t believe the summer is gone and it’s back-to-school season already! Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

This summer really has been fun – for me, personally, as I’ve spent precious moments with friends and family – and for the Association as we ramped up for the second annual Women Build It Conference in August and the 2024 Centier Bank Home-A-Rama show in September.

The show marks another great year of featuring five of the best custom home builders in Central Indiana. These luxurious homes are worth the trip to Promontory to see them if you are able. Check them out by purchasing a ticket to the show or checking out the Virtual Experience!

Our annual Women Build It Conference took place on August 28th at the Forum Events Center in Fishers. Hundreds of women from across the construction industry came together for a day-long event aimed at empowering them and building connections. Participants enjoyed enlightening presentations by special keynote speakers, engaging round table breakout sessions, informative panel discussions, and received various career development tools, tips, and tricks.

As a female leader in the local construction industry, it was exciting to take part in this event and come together with women in all sectors of construction, from architecture to grading and engineering to excavation, to learn from one another and share experiences. If you couldn’t make it to the Conference, BAGI recently launched a Women Build It Impact Team. This team meets monthly and is open to all BAGI members. I hope you’ll join us sometime!

As we wrap up the third quarter and head into election season, it’s easy to focus on what divides us. However, it is my hope that BAGI and our members will unite to overcome whatever election-related challenges come our way. There’s no doubt that elections impact the housing market, as we’ve seen with the up-down-up-down pattern of growth over the past three quarters of this election year. However, no matter what the future holds, BAGI remains committed to advocating on behalf of our members to make the local regulatory environment as friendly as possible to their business endeavors, providing meaningful education experiences, and creating space for members to network and grow their businesses.

ANTHONY’S CHOPHOUSE:

Crafted Cocktails

The Best Beverage Starts with a Strong Foundation

Artisans come in all shapes and sizes. Much like the homes and their builders that this issue features, there’s a certain artistry to being a bartender. Join us as Ainsley Sherlock of Anthony’s Chophouse in Carmel serves up some of her secrets for crafting the perfect cocktail – and keep an eye out for their latest cocktail menu.

PLAY OFF OF A WELL-KNOWN FAVORITE

The team at Anthony’s Chophouse prides themselves on expanding their customer’s palettes and educating them on the items they order. Ainsley Sherlock takes this as an opportunity to use familiar favorites as a base for creating something new.

FLAVORS THAT SPEAK TO THE SEASON

Sherlock suggests working with the flavors that most define the season, even if they seem off the beaten path of cocktail ingredients – for fall, think sweet potato, cinnamon, and warming liquors like Rum and Kentucky Bourbon.

This is also where the strong foundation comes into play, says Sherlock. “A lot of times we’ll take a classic cocktail recipe and rework it to be seasonal, so it’s kind of recognizable to them, but they may not realize why.”

Of course, some seasonal choices become favorites

year round – which is why you might’ve noticed their Campfire Coffee, a blend of toasted coffee and marshmallow, is a dessert menu staple.

AN ENVIRONMENT OF COLLABORATION AND VERSATILITY

When experimenting with your next great beverage combination, it’s important to bounce ideas off of the people around you. Behind each seasonal menu at Anthony’s Chophouse is a brainstorm session among the staff. The result is clear on the menu, where each crafted cocktail is attributed to the bartender that came up with the idea.

Sherlock says, “When we start brainstorming for new cocktails I like to look for flavor combinations, maybe in food that I’ve liked before. I take note of those flavor combinations and how I can potentially make them into something else.”

THE SMOKED OLD FASHIONED is a signature cocktail on the Anthony’s Chophouse menu. Bartender Ainsley Sherlock often uses familiar cocktail favorites as a base for something new.

Whatever your pleasure, Anthony’s Chophouse is serving up craft cocktails suited to your palette. Check out what Ainsley Sherlock and the rest of their team are mixing up with their new seasonal offerings at 201 W. Main St. in Carmel, or make a reservation and browse the menu at anthonyschophouse.com.

M c COMB PELLA WINDOWS & DOORS + PARTNERS:

Luxurious Light

The draw of BAGI’s annual HomeA-Rama is two-fold: attendees get a sneak peek at gorgeous, one-of-akind homes, and they can also draw inspiration for their own future builds. Picture windows continue to grow in size and popularity, offering loads of natural light and a scenic backdrop to new homes. Three of the five featured builders at this year’s Home-A-Rama, which will take place at Promontory of Zionsville in September, feature breathtaking views thanks to the highquality windows & doors provided by McComb Pella.

materials through the iron work, woodwork, and herringbone floors that define their design.

“It’s classic and timeless while also possessing a southern charm,” says David Foley, Vice President of Construction at Sigma Builders. McComb Pella helped to create natural transitions through every space of the design.

Windows guide you down the stairwell, big doors open to the back of the home, and an array of massive windows allow ample natural light to flow in.

Sigma Builder’s 9,500 sq. ft. structure draws on the vintage feel of raw

“When you step inside the front door, the first thing you see is a big set of French doors with floor-to-ceiling windows in the back of the living room. Out back is a lake and an acre and a half of woods,” says Foley. A railing made entirely of glass leaves the view unobstructed.

OLD TOWN DESIGN GROUP

Each of these homes are designed to maximize the phenomenal views – the lakeside access and tree-lined lots make the windows and doors a critical part of the ecosystem.

“If you don’t design the house to maximize that view, what’s the point?” says Kimberly Bowers, CFO of Sigma Builders.

Matt Huffman, President of Old Town Design Group, agrees. This is why he always asks his clients what they want to see when they’re sitting in their dining room sipping their morning coffee.

“One of my favorite parts of my job is to walk a lot with a homeowner. I can help them to visualize their new home, how it will sit on the lot and even imagine themselves in it. I want to understand how much natural light they want, how they are going to use their doors – will they have kids running in and out of them, open them any chance they can for fresh air, or simply use them as a visual entrance and exit,” says Huffman.

Huffman, whose company builds townhomes, semi-curated homes, and custom homes, appreciates the architectural differences that Pella brings to the table, accommodating all styles, from contemporary to traditional.

“They have windows that meet the needs of every client, making them the perfect vendor,” he says.

With the 2024 Old Town Home-A-Rama home, Huffman wanted to make sure that every room in the 8,500 sq. ft. floor plan could be filled with natural light, including the basement.

“We wanted to use that square footage as livable space, so we created an area to entertain or a place for family game night. Natural light is a necessity for livable space, but it’s also versatile throughout the day, so we had to design the home with all potential uses in mind,” says Huffman.

Old Town’s Home-A-Rama home features specialty doors from Pella, with an extended range

of motion at the hinge and statement windows to invite natural light in.

Huffman, whose company has partnered with Pella for 15 years, likes that the McComb Pella team provides their builders with all the best updated designs and features.

“A home show is a great place to showcase a new product. Pella works with us to find the right solution for functionality and design,” says Huffman. “Windows and doors are what make the interior pop.”

Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes, has worked in the Indy area for two decades. He has partnered with McComb Pella from the beginning, because he understands the importance of stellar windows and doors. Garcia’s Modern European Vineyard style home in Home-A-Rama is just shy of 8,200 sq. ft. and features sliding pocket doors off the great room into the covered porch.

Another striking feature is the front entry door, which is made entirely of glass. This provides an unobstructed view from the front of the home through the dining room window, straight out into the pool and backyard.

“That’s going to be a neat feature people talk about as they walk up to the house,” says Garcia. Glass doors from the walk-out basement offer a physical and visual escape. A matching set of glass doors lead to the rooftop sky deck, which provides a vantage over the entire lakeside neighborhood. All of this translates to a house that’s flooded with the warmth of natural light.

“Our goal is to build homes where memories are made,” says Bowers. “Memories are important because that’s what we carry with us.”

To tour these homes, come out to Promontory of Zionsville for the 2024 Home-A-Rama, which will take place September 12-15, 19-22, and 26-29.

HOME & WILLOW DESIGN:

The Perfect Pivot

Sometimes in life we find ourselves on long and winding paths that lead us to the perfect destination. Such is the case for Alexis Rhule, who entered a series of maledominated industries before landing her dream job as an interior designer.

After earning a degree in chemical engineering from Penn State, Rhule worked as a sales engineer, in an office environment where she primarily communicated with men.

“Out of my 35 coworkers, I was one of two females,” says Rhule.

A career change couldn’t come soon enough. During COVID, she meshed her passion for racing and photography when she began doing social media management and content creation for motorsports. But this wasn’t Rhule’s final stop – not yet.

A few years ago when she purchased her first home, “a total gut job,” as she says, the renovation sparked a passion in her that had long lain dormant. She turned the home into an AirBnb and then took a leap of faith to pursue a career as a designer, landing a job with Home & Willow Design in February 2024.

“I’m glad I had so many different experiences because each one shaped me into the way I operate today,” she says. “I learned a lot of problem solving and communication skills by being a sales engineer that has translated nicely into working with clients in the design world.”

Owning and operating her own business also honed her project management skills. As a photographer, she had to have a particular eye for perspective.

“Designers are constantly having to solve problems. They may run into an issue in a renovation or they may see a vision nobody else can. I learned all that from engineering,” says Rhule.

Her favorite thing is fusing functionality and creativity.

“The goal is to make somebody’s home as functional as possible for their lifestyle” says Rhule, who is thrilled to be a team member at Home & Willow.

“I wake up every morning gung-ho to go to work,” she says. “I’ve never felt that in any of my other careers. I’m constantly inspired by the atmosphere and people around me.”

To learn how you can create a comfortable, functional, and beautiful design for your home, contact the team at Home & Willow Design.

CAREER CHANGE

Alexis Rhule left the maledominated engineering field to pursue a career in interior design. She landed her dream job at Home & Willow where she puts her past experiences to work in a creative environment.

ARBOR HOMES:

BUILDING A HOME AT WORK

The Women of Arbor Homes are Building Careers Alongside Their Company

Ashley Satterfield began house hunting with her husband when she was pregnant with their daughter.

“Knowing you’re going from a family of four to a family of five doesn’t sound like a big jump until you realize that you only have three bedrooms in your house!” says Satterfield.

Without a home or lot that suited their needs, Satterfield felt ready to throw in the towel. Pre-existing homes were out of their price range, and they didn’t want to live miles from civilization. Then, in December 2023, Satterfield began working as an Executive Assistant with Arbor Homes. Suddenly, a whole new world of possibility opened to her family. Satterfield already knew she could trust her company, but her experience as a customer took her appreciation to a whole new level.

“They explained what would happen so you knew what to expect every step of the way,” says Satterfield. “You also get updates when different aspects start and get completed.”

The family broke ground on their four-bedroom, two-story home in May. Move-in is set for mid-September.

“We’re in a ranch now so the kids are freaking out that they’ll get to run stairs,” says Satterfield.

Sherrica Green, Payroll Coordinator with Arbor, moved into her Arbor Home in October 2023.

“I’ve always wanted to be a homeowner. Working here provided me with the opportunity to step into that role,” says Green, who is pleased to see the number of women in the construction industry. Some are on-site working with vendors while others are behind the scenes. But they all work in concert to make beautiful homes that allow people’s dreams to come true.

Ashley Satterfield

“Seeing the sheer happiness on each individual’s face is wonderful,” says Green.

Satterfield agrees. “When it becomes real to someone that they’re going to own their own house, they can’t stop smiling,” she says. “To be able to provide affordable housing and put families and single people in a better financial situation to where they can build a better credit score and give back to the community, that’s a beautiful thing.”

For the past several years, Kasey Miller and her husband have been apartment dwellers looking to buy a home. Three years ago, Miller began working for Arbor Homes as a Permit Manager. Because every Arbor Homes community has two to three model homes, Miller and her husband walked through countless furnished floor plans to help them explore the features they liked.

“We saw lofts and sunrooms and made pro and con lists,” Miller says. With every floor plan, she noticed the quality above all.

“It was perfect for a couple of country kids stuck in the city,” Miller says with a chuckle.

For Miller, the perfect home had to sit on an ideal lot. Originally from Brown County, she and her husband longed for a rural home. Ultimately, they found a piece of land set on the edge of a pond, with no properties behind.

“I’ve always wanted to be a homeowner. Working here provided me with the opportunity to step into that role.”
–SHERRICA GREEN Arbor Homes

Before they started the building process, they talked to sales managers, VPs, and superintendents out in the field, all of whom were happy to answer their questions. As first-time homeowners and firsttime house-builders, the Millers needed that extra support.

When the Millers finally broke ground last spring, the design consultants at Arbor Homes suggested floor plan improvements in ways they hadn’t considered, like adding a window or a light fixture in a darker corner of the home.

“The whole experience has been incredible,” says Miller, who habitually scrolls through weekly updates with photos of the build in real time.

Green

As they approach their fall move-in date, Miller has a newfound appreciation for Arbor’s mission to help as many people as possible achieve home ownership.

“[We get to] plan a future that I didn’t think my husband and I were going to be able to have,” she says.

“We love envisioning ourselves in our new home and building memories there.”

BUILD INDIANA ROOTS:

Dispelling the Myths

ABOUT ACHIEVABLE HOUSING

Achievable housing often faces misconceptions that can hinder its development and community acceptance. By debunking these myths, we can better understand the value and benefits housing solutions bring to our communities.

Achievable Housing Lowers Property Values

Of the monsters haunting the dreams of homeowners, the fear of lowered property values keeps communities pushing away achievable housing options. However, much like most things that go bump in the night, the myth of dropping property values is all smoke and mirrors.

Studies show that wellplanned achievable housing developments maintain or even increase local property values by improving neighborhood stability and attractiveness. Mark Gradison of Gradison Design/Build and Gradison Land Development says, “in areas where we’ve developed affordable housing, we’ve seen property values remain stable

is crucial. By understanding its benefits and supporting its development, we can foster stronger, more resilient communities. According to Gradison, “Achievable housing is not just a necessity but a vital component of vibrant, prosperous neighborhoods.”

or even increase, disproving this common misconception.”

MYTH 2:

Achievable Housing Increases Crime Rates

You’ve heard this falseequivalency before. “The next thing you know, they’ll be busting out car windows!”

There is no direct link between affordable housing and crime. In fact, when achievable housing comes into a community, people are generally happier, healthier, and more invested in their community than those settling for being house-poor or struggling to get by. Gradison notes, “Well-managed affordable housing contributes to safer, more cohesive communities by providing stable homes for families, rather than increasing crime rates.”

MYTH 3: Achievable Housing is Only for Low-Income Individuals

Achievable housing is often mistakenly viewed as exclusively for low-income individuals. However, it supports a broad

The latent benefit of these professionals living near their work include less commuter traffic coming in and out of the community at rush hour, more access to essential services, and tax and revenue dollars staying local to your own community.

MYTH 4: Achievable Housing Strains Public Services

Concerns about achievable housing overburdening public services are also unfounded. In fact, it can help balance service demands by stabilizing and growing the tax base. “By planning and executing achievable housing projects effectively, we ensure that infrastructure and public services are adequately supported and improved,” explains Gradison. If every household in a community has the same exact needs, they use the same services at a far higher rate.

Gradison says, “we’ve seen firsthand how achievable housing can significantly benefit local economies and community well-being. Making housing accessible allows communities to thrive economically and socially.”

GREAT CONNECTIONS

NARI Builds Strong Relationships Across the Remodeling Industry

The last thing a professional wants is to be caught on a worksite in the middle of a worst case scenario, especially if they’re relying on other contractors to fix it. When those nightmare projects come, though, it’s best to have a friend at your side. That’s why so much of contracting is a game of referrals. Remodelers know the importance of having a friend in their corner, especially when your business relies on winning new contracts. It’s important to connect with the industry, but where to start? That’s where NARI comes in. NARI equips remodelers nationwide with resources to succeed and build trust with consumers for Remodeling Done Right.

networking their members as it relates to new construction, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is a wonderful resource for remodelers and vendors to make a network all their own. NARI enables members to connect with peers in the industry and provide access to resources so that they can grow their business.

“Whether updating a kitchen to make it more efficient, turning an ordinary bathroom into a haven of rest and relaxation, or adding a room to meet the needs of a growing family, NARI offers each homeowner the ability to maximize the value and enjoyment for the dollars they invest in their remodeling project,” says Kerri Peebles, Executive Director of NARI.

The cost of an annual NARI membership at the local and national level is $600, and includes networking opportunities, professional certifications, and award opportunities like NARI’s prestigious Remodeler of the Year (RotY) award from both the local and national level.

NARI membership also offers opportunities for professional development and further education. Members have access to individual professional courses that can advance their career and validate their professionalism. This is a clear path for member businesses to gain accreditation (e.g., CRPM or MCR certifications).

“There are several different types of certifications they can get,” says Peebles. “It’s helpful to be able to put those letters behind their names when it comes to marketing their company.”

NARI membership also offers members discounts and rebates. They get access to the Home Depot rebate program, which is a rebate in the form of cash through Home Depot based on how much the business spends with them annually.

Members can login to NARI National and enjoy discounts on business supplies, services, and travel.

Because NARI is dedicated to building a strong industry image, members are also expected to operate by a code of ethics to provide professional, honest, and ethical services. This common code of conduct unites the professionals in NARI’s membership on common ground.

“It’s so helpful to connect with others in the industry like suppliers and vendors,” says

Obermeyer. “Sharing experiences, peer to peer, in small groups with other NARI members enables relationships to form, both personally and professionally.”

The Indiana chapter hosts a 90-minute networking luncheon on the second Tuesday of every month.

“Ultimately, we’d like to build an army so that we can be a reliable resource for the general public,” says Obermeyer.

In the past, NARI has participated in a fundraiser for Gleaners Food Bank. As their membership grows, they hope to get involved with more charities. Obermeyer recommends NARI membership to anyone in the remodeling industry, whether they’re a business owner or a sole member. She says, “Whether you’re seeking education, certification, or recognition and advocacy programs, being part of NARI of Central Indiana provides you with the opportunities to increase your knowledge, professional network and have a greater impact on the remodeling industry.”

FLATMADE CONCRETE CO.:

Cast of Character:

CUSTOMIZING

WITH FLATMADE CONCRETE COMPANY

The use of concrete in decor has steadily evolved beyond its minor role in driveways and fireplace surrounds. Characterized by its rugged, unfinished look, its minimalist aesthetic prioritizes function over form, but what if concrete could be the statement piece that brings true character to your spaces?

Ben Driskell, owner and operator of FLATMADE Concrete Company, sees the possibilities in every project from the beginning blueprints to the final curing of the concrete. Ben and his crew collaborate with homeowners and builders to bring their ideas to life, and the breadth of creativity FLATMADE pours into every project speaks for itself.

FLATMADE’s work is often on display at Indianapolis’ Home-A-Rama show – a exhibition of luxurious show homes constructed by Central Indiana’s leading custom home builders. In 2020, FLATMADE worked on a Home-A-Rama home that is contemporary comfort personified. Driskell characterizes FLATMADE’s craftsmanship as creative and unique, “G&G’s 2020 Home-A-Rama house was one of my favorites to work on just because the shapes were abstract and some of the colors they used just played really well with the rest of the house.”

FLATMADE’s prolific portfolio is made possible by outof-the-box thinking that rises to meet logistical challenges. Driskell recalls one homeowner whose house was built on the side of a ravine, which complicated their desire for a patio, “We had to change the grade of their backyard and come up with a raised patio design that had steps. We were kind of given the open book on it with budget and design, which allowed us to get creative.”

In a growing landscape of concrete contractors, Driskell says what sets FLATMADE Concrete apart is their fastidious forethought, “Sometimes these projects can be kind of a crunch, because we’re working on a home with a deadline. That causes a lot of problems. Proper planning, attention to detail, foresight, and experience with a lot of projects that are similar I think helps us execute time and time again.”

ELEVATING EVERY SPACE:

GROUP: The Comprehensive Design Services of Dovetail Group

Bringing together the structural needs and the finer details, co-owners Kayla Stauffer and Liz Curtis named their full-service remodeling company after the sides of their partnership that clicked perfectly into place. Dovetail Group, founded in 2015, brings together Curtis’ background in home furnishings, finishes, and fixtures with Stauffer’s remodeling and construction expertise. After years of referring clients back and forth, the two grew together and became one of the only design firms in Indianapolis to offer comprehensive full-service remodeling and interior design all under one roof.

The all-female team attributes some of their nearly 10 years of success to transparency in project cost across residential remodels, furniture & styling projects, residential new build construction, and commercial projects.

“We had a client who wanted us to do his whole home but couldn’t afford to do it all at once,” says Curtis. “We designed it and priced it all upfront and for four years we worked on his house one level at a time.”

While the Dovetail Group team loves designing whole homes and main floors, they can also put together a master plan with a cohesive design and then tackle one room at a time.

When Curtis and Stauffer first meet with

potential clients in their home, they ask questions about their project scope and design styles. From there they customize the process to fit the client’s needs. Once hired, Dovetail Group generates 3D imagery of the design options. Clients can meet in the Dovetail Group studio to visualize the finished product and walk through all the details. They also offer the same process virtually.

“It lowers their stress level so much because they don’t have to look at just one single tile and wonder if it’s going to make a pretty backsplash,”says Curtis.

Once a design is established they’re able to speak more specifically on budgets by using itemized pricing software.

“That’s a huge piece because we don’t want to make a pretty design that’s unattainable,” says Stauffer. “At the same time, we never sacrifice design for budget.”

“Clients know what they’re paying for, and if they want to lower their budget, we’re open to helping them do that,” says Curtis.

Andy and Kim H. came to Stauffer and Curtis for a full-home gut job and remodel. The whole project felt daunting and complicated until the Dovetail team guided them through it.

“The entire process was organized, professional, and seamless,” says Andy.

During their initial meeting, the couple had an idea of what they liked, but they didn’t have the designer vocabulary to describe their design aesthetic beyond broad, generalized terms. They brought together ideas from Scandi, contemporary and minimalist inspirations. At their next meeting they were presented with three floor plan layouts which went beyond what they could have envisioned. From there, the team moved into interior design, selecting cabinets and countertops, digging into plans for plumbing, lighting, windows, and tile, addressing the hardwood, carpets, and rugs throughout the house, and narrowing down options for all interior furniture and fixtures.

“There were lots of moving parts that were handled effortlessly with a bare minimum of running around to vendors,” says Andy, who was impressed by Dovetail’s grasp of their Scandi-Contempo-Minimum ethos concept.

“They delivered a cohesive, comfortable, beautiful product,” says Andy. “Plus, they were a fun group to work with – always positive and communicative. We never had to wonder what our next step would be.”

THE FIREPLACE CENTER OF INDIANAPOLIS:

THE ULTIMATE HOME Glow-Up

YOUR GUIDE TO BROWSING AND SELECTING THE PERFECT FIREPLACE

A cozy fireplace is exactly what your home needs for maximum fall ambiance. But choosing your fireplace online without knowing what you’re getting, or picking from a slim selection is sure to be a letdown. Instead, get the fireplace that fits your home, style, and budget from The Fireplace Center of Indianapolis. Certified Hearth Design Specialist Peyton Smalling gives you a step-by-step guide to meeting your perfect fireplace match.

STEP ONE: VISIT THE SHOWROOM

With dozens of fireplaces and surrounds, you really do have to see The Fireplace Center of Indianapolis (FCI) in person. Browsing online is helpful, but it’s too easy to be swayed by images. “The look in person,” says Peyton, “is completely different. Seeing what you’re getting builds

STEP TWO: SIT DOWN FOR A CHAT

Peyton says the first thing you’ll see when you walk into FCI is a smile. After that, you’ll sit down with a Certified Hearth Design Specialist to chat about your needs and get some critical fireplace education. “Not everyone is fluent in fireplace talk,” Peyton says. “We help customers through it, and devise a solution that works for them.”

STEP THREE: UNDERSTAND FIREPLACE TRENDS

Peyton says trends in fireplaces and hearths change often, but FCI is ready to accommodate any style. They offer a full selection of fireplace types, from woodburning to gas, electric, and pellet stoves in popular styles like traditional (square) and linear (rectangular).

For a more traditional look, one popular choice is the 864 by Fireplace Xtraordinaire, which is widely considered to have the most beautiful flame on the market. On the linear end, homeowners tend to gravitate toward the Camina and Schmid and its unique flame-in-log technology. Most fireplaces set the logs around the flame where in this fireplace the flame comes out of the logs themselves. However, if there are still little ones running around the house, a cool touch glass option like the Davinci might be your safest option.

STEP FOUR: TALK BUDGET

FCI has a fireplace for every budget and always provides customers with a good, better, and best option. Peyton says this is helpful because customers can see the difference their dollars can make.

STEP FIVE: MAKE YOUR PICKS

Once you’re through the decision-making process, FCI can take it from there. They can complete the entire project from delivery to installation to building a custom and unique hearth or fireplace surround. The Fireplace Center has their very own little design center right in the showroom with cultured stone, tile, granite, veneer, and a large selection of mantels to choose from. “If you can dream it,” Peyton says, “we can build it.”

Turn your dream of a show-stopping fireplace into reality and give your home the glow-up it deserves. Visit the Fireplace Center of Indianapolis showroom Monday through Saturday at 3837 N. High School Road, Suite 1 in Indianapolis, or browse online before you go at indyfireplace.com.

A NATIONAL BRAND WITH WOMEN AT EVERY LEVEL

/ photos by Adam Gibson Architectural Photography
“HAVING WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION IS CRUCIAL FOR FOSTERING INNOVATION, IMPROVING WORKPLACE CULTURE, AND ADDRESSING LABOR SHORTAGES.”
– DIANA DANIELY Outside Builder Sales, Ferguson

It’s easy to assume the phrase “women in construction” refers only to the hands-on labor side of the industry. While it’s true that women are a necessary part of the workforce as joiners, tilers, welders, etc. These professionals are collaborating with women every day as interior designers, account managers, and more. The fact of the matter is that women are integral to the success of building projects at every level – something the team at Ferguson figured out a long time ago.

“It’s important to empower women,” says Natalie Gertiser, Senior Showroom Manager with Ferguson Bath, Kitchen, and Lighting Gallery. “In this industry it’s been a man’s world, and while we are not the builder, being a vendor is still important to show our support for everyone who is involved in the industry.”

The annual Women Build It Conference, hosted by Haven Media and the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI), is one way women in the building industry can come together and celebrate their accomplishments. This one-day conference enabled attendees to mix and mingle while sharing experiences and discovering new skills. For the second year in a row, Ferguson was the platinum title sponsor for the event.

“As a woman in corporate America working in a male-dominated industry, it’s incredibly important to participate in conferences that represent women and the building industry,” says Diana Daniely,

Outside Builder Sales at Ferguson Enterprises. “Having women in construction is crucial for fostering innovation, improving workplace culture, and addressing labor shortages.”

Daniely emceed this year’s conference, which features keynote speakers, breakout sessions, panel discussions, and career development & networking opportunities for over 250 attendees.

Ferguson is invested in supporting women in the trades and the local market, and they are well-represented within the company.

In addition to Daniely and Gertiser, there is Kristen Elder, Vice President of Showrooms, Residential Builder & Digital Commerce at Ferguson Enterprises. Plus, the Director of Showrooms, Showroom Designer, and VP of Category Management are all women.

“Throughout our organization, women are helping bring projects to life,” says Elder.

Ferguson is a $30-billion-dollar national company, but they are intentional about picking products and merchandise for showrooms that fit the local flavor.

“What a designer is looking for in Indianapolis is different from Scottsdale, Arizona, or Savannah, Georgia,” says Elder. “There’s definitely a local flair to design so we take from a corporate standpoint the larger vision of those partners we work with while really leaning in with our local teams.”

Ferguson stays up to date on the latest design trends so that people find the most appealing products on the showroom floor.

THE WOMEN OF FERGUSON (Left to Right) Danielle Randall, Sales Team Manager; Natalie Gertiser, Senior Showroom Manager; Diana Daniely, Outside Builder Sales; Laura Sullivan, Area Centralized Operations Manager.

Some brands appearing at Ferguson include Wet Style, a manufacturer of premium quality bath furnishings, and Fine Art, a handcrafted luxury lighting line that melds function with art. The Z-Lite lighting line is a recent addition to the showroom floor, and Dornbracht, which manufactures fittings and accessories for the bathroom, spa, and kitchen, is also a new display. Ferguson also just created the newest Kallista display –the first in the country – showcasing the luxury designer faucets and fixtures.

“Ferguson’s showroom in Indy includes just about every brand you’d want to see, from fabulous Sub-Zero Wolf to Thermador to GE Monogram appliances,” says Elder. “Also on display are all the usual suspects, including Delta and Brizo. We take it to another level as we help clients imagine their space.”

Ferguson just finished installing a new working kitchen that showcases two appliance vendors: Signature Kitchen Suite (SKS) and GE Monogram. The focal point on the SKS side is that it will

“THROUGHOUT OUR ORGANIZATION, WOMEN ARE HELPING BRING PROJECTS TO LIFE.”

THE MOST OF HOME

have induction, gas, and built-in sous vide technology all in one range. The brass finish of the GE Monogram acted as the design inspiration for the entire black and gold kitchen.

“We picked the brass finish because it’s unique,” says Gertiser. “It’s going to be hard for someone to envision that without seeing it.”

The lighting system in their new working kitchen is called WAC Ventrix, a modular linear lighting, control, and power system which enables lighting to be moved all around.

“It’s a new concept for lighting,” says Gertiser. “You can change out the coloring and it totally changes the look, so we’ve got black and gold trims in it.”

Ultimately, Gertiser designed a striking kitchen with many “wow” factors.

“The cabinets, counters, and backsplash, which stretch up the full length of the wall are all black, giving it a moody setting, which grabs everyone’s attention,” says Gertiser. “That was the goal.”

Ferguson is just one example of leading companies bringing out female voices in the building industry – and the work Gertiser and her peers bring onto the Indianapolis showroom floor is all the proof needed for the importance of that creativity. Gertiser notes the massive impact of simply networking and listening to how her peers do things in the industry.

“Learning from one another and building each other up is invaluable,” she says.

The Women Build It Conference, which will include breakfast, lunch, and a cocktail reception, is a great way to get a pulse on the exciting construction industry.

“While having a seat at the table is important to me, what matters even more is the impact it has on the women who will follow,” says Daniely.

MONT SURFACES:

CRYSTALLINE CLEAR:

Amplifying Decor with Quartz Surfaces

When it comes to style and functionality, homeowners adore the magnetic allure of quartz surfaces. They’re a popular choice for those who wish to elevate their spaces while availing themselves of quartz’s durability and versatility. The consistent yet diverse continuum of quartz offerings on the market provides the flexibility homeowners crave. That said, some core design principles should guide homeowners as they pair their decor.

Mont Surfaces understands the universal admiration for quartz. Their Chief Marketing Officer, Carol Payto, agrees there is a place for quartz in most interior design scenarios. “Regardless of the space you are considering for quartz, there is a wide array of choices available. Through the use of color and pattern, cohesive looks can be created, spanning from casual and contemporary to sophisticated and elegant.”

Choosing the right color and pattern is key to evoking the desired atmosphere. Neutral tones render a timeless, versatile tableau, while a bold color or pattern can be the focal point of the kitchen or bathroom. In coordinating with cabinetry or hardware, homeowners may select complementary colors such as white quartz with gray veining alongside dark wood or brushed nickel. Once a homeowner’s vision is realized, how the space

is accessorized can affect the impact of quartz surfaces. A minimalist approach preserves the polished mystique of the quartz, allowing homeowners to punctuate the scene with functional decor items such as decorative bowls or unique utensil holders.

Homeowners building or remodeling rooms with an abundance of indirect natural light should strongly consider quartz for surfaces. Windows or skylights illuminate the natural beauty and novum of quartz, all while infusing the room with an elegant glow.

Quartz is so versatile, Carol Payto says, there are only a few contexts where quartz is not the ideal choice. “Due to the resins used to create engineered quartz, it is advised to avoid using quartz around heat sources, such as a fireplace surround or a backsplash near a cooktop as well as outdoor uses,” says Payto. Much of the essence in today’s design choices is making it your own. With the variety of quartz colors and patterns available, homeowners have a magnificent pallet from which to choose. Mont Surfaces will provide the selection and the help you need to choose the best color and pattern to fit your design esthetic.

HUMANITARIANS IN THE HEARTLAND:

For the fifth year in a row, Jamie Gauker of J. Gauker Interiors has served as the team leader of the Greater Indy Habitat Women Build, and takes great pride in serving her community. “I am extremely passionate about the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build,” Gauker says, “I am all about helping women.” Gauker was in charge of ensuring the team had all the tools necessary to fundraise this noble endeavor.

The program’s continued efforts aim to bridge the gap in affordable housing. The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana has estimated the homeownership rate for Indianapolis is only 54%, which is well below state and national levels. Combine this with rising building costs and the result is thousands of Hoosier families in need.

Gauker says, “The women who sign up to get help from Habitat for Humanity go through so much to get approved to get a zero interest loan – not a free house…I have so much respect for these women who want to make a better life for themselves and their family.”

Team members who return to the program year after year are drawn in not just by the pull of philanthropy, but also the chance to empower one another as well as other women and their families. Gauker credits the success of the build to her persevering team members, which includes a great group of women from Home Artisans, “Everyone showed up to work hard to make this house a home for the new owners. I am blessed to be part of such a great team!”

Building Better Building Today for a Better Tomorrow

Baker Contracting LLC, a full-service builder that specializes in custom residential construction and commercial remodeling with a focus on high-end innovative designs, was launched in 2012 by Isaiah Baker. Baker has been in the industry much longer than that though. Baker’s family has been constructing homes in central Indiana since the 1950s. It all started with his grandfather, who then passed the torch onto his uncle and dad. Through the years, Baker worked alongside his family, soaking up all the knowledge he could about the construction industry. When Isaiah thinks of building he thinks of family. Whether you are building a home for your family or a commercial space that you share with your work family, the Baker team treats every project as if they are building for their own families. Starting out working for his families business, and then moving onto working as a subcontractor, vendor, and seeing multiple sides of the building industry really helps Baker give perspective for the full process of building. Early on, Baker learned very quickly that he would have to take a different approach when it came to customer service. “I noticed early on that clients would come in and tell us that other builders had turned them away. The other builders advised these clients not to come back until they were pre-approved or until they owned land or had building plans or septic designs,” says Baker. “We

want our clients to feel welcomed and to feel supported from the very beginning. Most people looking to build don’t know where to start. That’s where we come in!”

A client may need help parceling land, doing soil testing, or finding a lender. Baker’s seasoned team, who collectively has years of experience, guides their clients through that process. A client can expect to work closely with their in-house interior designer who works with them to do renderings and help select all their design materials, give weekly updates, and walk through the project with the project manager to ensure everything is tailored for them.

“We take care of your entire build process, from initial drawings, design, project management, construction, warranty, clean-up, final walkthrough, and everything in between,” says Baker. “People appreciate that since building can prove to be overwhelming.” An added perk is that by handling all of these facets, Baker is often able to save people time, money, and help make it a more enjoyable process.

“We strive to make the building process as easy and as fun as possible for our clients. We can help them with whatever they need and remain that one main point of contact.”

Acting as a one-stop shop inevitably makes the construction process smoother and a lot more fun. Baker Contracting’s hands-on, full-service, highly helpful approach has not only helped them obtain but also retain clients. Whether you are building your home or creating the perfect work place home away from home, building today is all about investing into your family for a better tomorrow.

STONE MART:

A GROWING COMPANY THAT WELCOMES Women in Management

COO Samantha Lautanen began her career at Stone Mart, a wholesale supplier of natural stone and engineered material, in 2012 after responding to an ad for a customer service position. What began as a summer job while she attended college turned into more than a decade of loving what she does.

“I fell in love with the industry,” she says.

Within six months she was promoted to outside sales. Then, in 2014, Stone Mart expanded its Columbus, Ohio headquarters, and CEO Yash Lunkad felt Lautanen’s skills could be better used in management. She oversaw inside sales and purchasing and, as operations manager, the warehouses. She did whatever was needed for the rapidly growing company.

Her positions continued to

change and grow along with the company. And by 2022, just 10 years from the time she started, Lautanen became Stone Mart’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). To what does she credit her quick progression?

“I tried to learn anything and everything,” she says. “I needed to know all the details whether they seemed relevant or not.”

Lautanen also credits her college coursework – she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work – with giving her greater compassion, empathy, and understanding for all kinds of people.

Early on in her career as a 23-year-old outside salesperson, she found the niche industry to be mainly male-dominated. However, ten years of progress have made

a difference, with more women in every level, from management positions to warehouse workers and truck drivers.

Every industry has its challenges, but Lautanen believes “that anything’s possible if you put your mind, passion, and drive to it.”

Her advice to women thinking of working in this industry is threefold. “Knowledge is power. Learn everything you can. Confidence comes from knowledge. If you think you can, you can.”

The use of stone in homes continues to trend, and Lautanen believes engineered material, such as quartz, will become even more relevant moving forward.

“I’m really excited for what is to come,” she says.

For your next project, start at Stone Mart and work with their expert staff to find the perfect material for your home.

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

MAKE YOUR BUILD BETTER: Women in Construction Bring Skill & Innovation

“Their contributions are highly valued, driving innovation and fostering a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.”

From its beginning, home building was a male-dominated industry. As such, one rarely interacted with a woman during the construction process. Today, there’s a different industry standard, one with more and more women entering the conversation. Women play huge roles in the home build process, whether in the form of cabinet & countertop selection, roof installation, or interior design.

“Quite frankly, I don’t know of a custom home builder who doesn’t work with women in this industry,” says Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes.

In fact, Garcia wouldn’t be where he is today were it not for his wife, Mindy, a seasoned Realtor with CENTURY 21 Scheetz who has supported him and helped his business flourish through the years.

“She’s played a giant role in where G&G is today,” says Joe. Mindy Garcia is the face behind the listing of every G&G spec home or Home-A-Rama project.

Mindy has seen the evolution of women’s involvement in construction and she applauds the way women have broken barriers in order to build a stronger, more inclusive future.

“Women in construction are becoming increasingly common, bringing unique skills and perspectives to the industry,” she says. “Their contributions are highly valued, driving innovation and fostering a more inclusive and dynamic workforce.”

Over the past decade, Hilari Goris, owner of Hilari Goris Designs, has collaborated with G&G Custom Homes to bring her transitionally styled interiors to life in home builds that blend old with new.

“A lot of times when people want to work with me, it’s because of Hilari,” says Joe Garcia.

aspect of the home.”

Goris notes that the role women play in the construction industry is of utmost importance for a number of reasons.

“We bring a different perspective into every aspect of the home. From the layout, function of each space, materials used, and overall aesthetic, we not only help bring the home to life, but we also listen to each family’s individual ways of living and how they want their home to feel when they walk in the front door,” says Goris. “We truly make the house feel like they are home.”

And that’s precisely what every homeowner wants in the end – a retreat where they feel safe, secure, and stress-free.

“Women bring so much to the table when it comes to constructing a home,” says Joe Garcia. “Their presence has transformed the landscape of the industry.”

The Power of Light:

STYLE, FUNCTION, AND WELLNESS

As automated home solutions rise in popularity, lighting has become more than just how to illuminate a room. Thanks to innovations in technology, lighting is now a core design element in living spaces, influencing moods, and impacting well-being. From decorative accents to functional necessities and health-focused innovations, the role lighting plays extends far beyond the simple flip of a switch to light up a room.

DECORATIVE: Add Personality

The ambiance of a space is enhanced with decorative lighting. Using smart technology, homeowners can adjust light colors and intensity to match any occasion. Vibrant, cool lighting can uplift a room’s mood, while warm, soft tones bring a calm energy to a space. Decorative lighting is a key player in expressing personality and

enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of any room.

FUNCTIONAL: Support Daily Living

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, functional lighting is crucial in assisting everyday home activities. Outdoor illumination, including wayfinding, is functional and fun at the same time. Task lighting provides illumination where it’s needed most, thereby improving productivity. WELL-BEING & HEALTH: Light with Care

Circadian lighting systems encourage better sleep patterns and overall health by simulating the natural rhythms of sunlight. Digital windows and skylights mimic sunlight in areas such as finished basements and offices.

As technology continues to evolve, the future of lighting promises even greater integration with our lifestyles, improving how we experience and connect with our living spaces. Women in CONSTRUCTION issue

INDIANAPOLIS WORKS TO HIRE MORE Women in Construction

In the world of construction, where hard hats and steel-toed boots reign supreme, the presence of women has historically been scarce. However, as the industry evolves – as society evolves – so too does the recognition of the valuable contributions women bring to the table. According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), nearly 1.2 million women are working in construction, making up just shy of ten percent of the construction industry. There are many people and organizations in Greater Indianapolis who are making efforts to ensure the hiring of more

women in the construction industry. As an example of these endeavors, take the annual Women Build It Conference, hosted by Haven Media & BAGI (Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis).

Believed to be one of the oldest organized builder groups in the United States, BAGI has been at the forefront of promoting the homebuilding industry in Central Indiana. The organization’s commitment to fostering a thriving community for homebuilding professionals and homeowners extends to advocating for diversity and inclusion within the industry.

Given this commitment, BAGI was fully onboard to co-host the Women Build It conference, when Haven Home proposed the idea, and it has quickly become a cornerstone in the effort to increase the presence of women in construction. This day-long event serves as a platform for women in the industry to connect, learn, and empower one another.

Last year’s Women Build It Conference, held in August, was a resounding success. From insightful keynote speakers to roundtable breakout sessions to panel discussions, the event provided attendees with invaluable opportunities to network and grow both personally and professionally.

This year’s Women Build It Conference was held on August 28th. Building upon the success of previous years, this event provided attendees with a new panel of keynote speakers, breakout groups, and networking opportunities. It’s an opportunity for the Indianapolis community to come together once again and

champion the advancement of women in construction. In addition to celebrating the achievements of women in construction, it’s crucial to address the barriers and challenges that prevent more women from entering the field. Here are some suggested strategies for hiring more women in construction:

2 1

RECRUITMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Attracting the available female talent begins with making openings known. Consider recruiting events, whether in-person or online, geared toward women and emphasizing their career potential.

VALUE TRANSFERABLE SKILLS:

Once the door has been opened via recruiting activities, be sure to recognize the untapped talent. Consider female candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn. Intangibles such as creativity and work ethic can lead to great success in this industry.

3

PROMOTE REWARDS: Highlight the rewards of working in construction, including competitive pay (NAWIC says that the gap between male and female talent is much smaller in construction than in other industries. In this industry, women make up 95.5% of average male earnings, as compared to the 82.9% national average gap) and opportunities for creativity, community impact, and career advancement.

4

COMMUNICATE DIVERSITY OF ROLES: Showcase the diverse range of roles available in the construction industry, from fieldwork to project management and leadership positions. Emphasize the opportunities for entry, growth, and future potential.

By implementing these strategies and fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment, the construction industry can attract and retain more talented women, leading to a more diverse and thriving workforce.

Providing opportunities for entry is a great start. Offering a platform for women to share their experiences, learn from one another, and advocate for change, will allow us to work toward a diverse, skillful, and knowledgeable construction industry in the future.

Kristen Shaffer-Hale is Breaking the Blueprint

For the last thirty years, Kent Shaffer Homes has been one of the premier custom home builder firms in Central Indiana. Kent Shaffer, the firm’s founder, is a second generation builder who has cemented his family’s legacy with over 250 stunning homes in some of the region’s most picturesque neighborhoods. As the firm continues to thrive, Shaffer has passed the proverbial power drill to his daughter, Kristen Shaffer-Hale, who has distinguished herself as one of the only female

luxury home builders in the state of Indiana. Shaffer-Hale has instinctually glided into the predominantly male world of construction and custom home building with a toolbox of invaluable generational knowledge. With concrete mix running in her veins, she has followed in some large footsteps to get here. “Growing up on job sites, watching my father and grandfather build homes laid the foundation of the type of builder I am today,” Shaffer-Hale says.

KENT SHAFFER HOMES:
KRISTEN SHAFFER-HALE Owner, Kent Shaffer Homes

Before joining her father at Kent Shaffer Homes, Shaffer-Hale graduated from Purdue University’s Construction Management Program. Over the past 15 years, she has combined her own meticulous mettle with the superior brand of craftsmanship that has become synonymous with her family name—culminating in her taking over leadership of the company. As President of Kent Shaffer Homes, she has taken the company to new heights while maintaining the small business, handson approach that allows her to give clients the personal touch they deserve.

Along with other Central Indiana builders, Kent Shaffer Homes is also a fervent participant in BAGI’s Home-A-Rama showcase for innovations in residential design and construction. When describing KSH’s upcoming Home-A-Rama home, Shaffer-Hale depicts a home designed to blend modernity with nostalgia, “embodying a timeless European aesthetic, our goal was to create a residence that withstands time and highlights custom architectural details that distinguish it.”

In addition to building award-winning residential masterpieces, working on Home-A-Rama homes has also afforded Shaffer-Hale with opportunities to collaborate with other accomplished women like herself in a maledominated industry. “Over the past few years,” she says, “I have been working more and more with two other strong, and incredibly talented women; Emily with Emily Handke Design, one of the most creative and influential architects in the area, and Sara Wildflower Design, probably the most talented interior designer.”

Through their powers combined, Shaffer-Hale and her partnerships with other female-led businesses have delivered some of the most dazzling builds in the show’s history, “These two women have been absolute forces of nature to work with and have been dropping clients’ jaws on job after job.”

Despite the effects of the recent global pandemic and a turbulent housing market, Shaffer-Hale reports that the tempo of her business has not slowed, and she remains steadfast in rising to meet the type of challenges that have transformed her company. Each year, she and her team work between eight and twelve jobs, every one fortified by her motivation to make a homeowner’s dream a reality, “No matter how large and elaborate the builds are, I never lose sight of the fact that at the end of the day, what I am really creating is space for a family to set down roots and create memories. That is, and always will be, the most rewarding aspect of my career.”

A TIMELESS EUROPEAN AESTHETIC

Kent Shaffer Homes’ 2024 HomeA-Rama home is designed to blend modernity with nostalgia, says owner Kristen Shaffer-Hale. Tour the home weekends Sept. 12-29 at Promontory in Zionsville. Tickets available at bagi.com/home-a-rama.

HER HOME DESIGN:

Deconstructing Stereotypes with the HER Academy of Design and Remodeling

The world of design and remodeling has traditionally turned on a male-centric axis, but one Indianapolis-based firm has dedicated itself to dismantling this entrenched stereotype through community education. Since 2021, the team at HER Home Design have operated their own instructional program devised to empower women and children with practical skills, to combat cultural bias, and to increase diverse visibility in the industry.

At the HER Academy, students acquire design and remodeling skills in a supportive and inclusive environment while under the tutelage of experienced industry professionals – many of whom understand the challenges women face in these spaces. In the end, they received a certificate verifying that they’ve completed more than 2000 training hours.

Keianna Harrison, HER’s Executive Director of Design and Remodeling, is intimately familiar with the industry hurdles in this career path, “Facing and overcoming challenges, such as being one of the few women in a traditionally male-dominated industry, taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. Personal experiences with both successes and setbacks have highlighted the need for practical, hands-on learning and the value of having a supportive network.”

While designing the curriculum for HER Academy, the team researched how deep the need went in the current landscape of educational opportunities. Through consultation with industry experts and educators, the program now uses a comprehensive approach to help students thrive in their professional pursuits.

Technical skill training workshops will provide students in cohorts of 25 with hands-on experiences covering the full spectrum of design principles. Students will acquire invaluable industry insights, such as current trends, career opportunities, and crucial business acumen. Soft skills development will lay a firm foundation of professional competence by training in leadership, negotiation, and communication skills. The program is working toward an official industry certification, and also offers opportunities for students to rub elbows with seasoned professionals who can provide guidance and mentorship.

With an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, HER Academy is demolishing

“Our academy is more than just a ‘class,’ it’s a community dedicated to empowering students through education and opportunity.”

barriers that preclude intersectional perspectives from penetrating the world of design and remodeling. “Our academy is more than just a ‘class,’” Harrison says, “It’s a community dedicated to empowering students through education and opportunity…Our commitment is to not only teach skills, but to foster a lifelong passion for design and remodeling, equipping our students with the tools to succeed and innovate their careers.”
