ARTISAN OUTDOOR CRAFTSMAN:
HIRING A TREX CERTIFIED PRO-PLATINUM CONTRACTOR by Courtney Pope
Summer is here! As many homeowners improve different aspects of their home, even post-pandemic, a new deck build might be on your list of projects. Are you weighing the options of wood versus composite? Wondering the pros and cons of each and the cost difference? As a Trex Certified Pro-Platinum Contractor, Artisan Outdoor Craftsman, is here to help with your deck build project! 8 H AV E N
SELECTING A CONTRACTOR When considering any deck contractor, you should research the prospects website, look or ask for portfolio images, and dig deep into their deck build process and the products they carry or prefer to use. As you research, you’ll find not many companies put in the extra precautions Artisan OC implement for their clients.
With a high honor of Pro-Platinum Contractor with Trex, Artisan OC goes the extra mile on each deck build project and provides a 5-year labor warranty (10-year warranty if the entire deck project is built with Trex product) to the homeowner. Beyond a beautiful, finished product, Artisan OC ensures any post installed in the ground doesn’t rot with time by protecting their posts with seam tape. “Artisan OC also provides a design team to help homeowners with product, style and color selections that best suits their budget, style and family functionality,” explains founder and president Ryan Coyle.
BEFORE
SELECTING A MATERIAL If you’re considering wood or composite as your specified materials for your deck build, consider these facts from Trex, the leading composite deck material in the world. Beyond the quality material itself, Trex provides a competitive warranty, extensive accessory catalog, and a nearly-maintenance free product. Trex provides three levels of product with an array of colors, styles and accessories that all come with a 25-year color fade and stain warranty. Wine spills, sun scorching, or even pet soils over the years pose no problem to the hardy material – its three-sided protected material will not fade, stain, scratch, or mold. The product is hassle free for homeowners with cleaning being as simple as pressure washing with soap and water! If you have the great outdoors on your mind, rest easy knowing Trex uses a 95% AFTER recycled composite board! With the expansive Trex product line, it’s easy to specify Trex for your deck from top to bottom, literally! “We can create dry spaces underneath a second story deck with the Rain Escape System. This allows the homeowner to have additional outdoor living space that can be used in all-weather!” says Coyle. THE PRICING DIFFERENCE As you’ve likely noticed, lumber pricing has been fluctuating due to supply and demand. The Trex Transcend and Trex Select are comparable (within 5-10%) to the current prices of wood decking! Even if a customer selects the highest level, Trex Enhance, the cost equals out after about 2-3 years with a traditional wood deck re-stain or re-paint. Also consider wood decking material is not backed by a warranty and the easy maintenance of simply cleaning Trex is not matched by wood.
TOTAL TRANSFORMATION! Artisan Outdoor Craftsman provides a design team to help homeowners with product, style and color selections that best suits their budget, style and family functionality. Artisan OC transformed this home (above) to feature a dry space underneath a second story deck using the Trex Rain Escape System.
YOUR NEXT STEP To begin your deck project in the Greater Indianapolis area, visit artisanoc.com, complete the contact form and questionnaire to submit to the Artisan OC design team. Their team will then review and be in touch to start your deck build project!

COUNTERTOPS
ACo:
SPOTLIGHT ON CAMBRIA STONE:
Countertops – and Beyond Photos courtesy of Cambria
When it comes to countertops and surfaces, making the right choice for such a major component of your project can be a little intimidating. That’s why ACo is committed to educating homeowners, builders, and designers about their options and finding the optimal solutions for their needs through vendors like family-owned Cambria, who deliver stunning products that can transform your living space.
KENDAL
CAMBRIA: QUALITY, VARIETY, AND BEAUTY Cambria stone is available in over 200 designs: light, dark, warm, cool, movement, no movement, jeweled, marble, terrazzo, and granite alternatives. And, while the options are exhaustive, selecting the right fit is not exhausting when you have the design experts at ACo on your side. Cambria recently introduced four new colors to their lineup:
IVYBRIDGE. A crisp white background gives the dark teal diagonal veins of IVYBRIDGE a great sense of depth. There’s also a playful, touch of sparkle imparted by the fine gold shimmer. KENDAL. Features a soft teal and white field with black veins. This option also offers depth – and a pop of dazzle – with prismatic crystals. As Cambria’s Jenn Couch says, “If someone’s looking for a little pizzazz as a subtle undertone, [KENDAL] is a great one!” RUXLEY. Cambria offers a softer, more restrained vibe with RUXLEY. It features a warm white background with subtle emerald veins and cooler white veins. BLACKBROOK. Stark, streamlined, and sleek, BLACKBROOK boasts a black field with bright white veins. Like lightning on a dark night, this is a powerful choice for modern, elegant decors.
If you’ve lived in fear of adding color to your countertops and other surfaces, Cambria is here to reassure you: you can go bold! Their new colors pull deep shades that we are starting to see more in cabinetry. You can be adventurous. Or, if that’s not for you, they will look equally fantastic with subtle, neutral color cabinetry.

WHY STOP AT COUNTERTOPS? Cambria recently launched a new 6mm profile option. Ultrathin and lightweight, the slim but mighty 6mm opens up a world of alternative uses for Cambria stone. The weight difference is significant: 3cm products weigh 15 pounds per square foot and 2cm products weigh 10 pounds per square foot. This keeps them from being viable options for weight-sensitive applications, like backsplashes or shower surrounds. The 1cm option cuts weight to 6 pounds per square foot, while the new 6mm pares it down to just 3 pounds. Now, when you are talking about an entire wall, for example, this makes all the difference in the world. Cambria’s 6mm and 1cm products are perfect for: Backsplashes Backlighting Thermoforming Wall cladding
6mm options are available in ten designs currently, and 1cm are available in virtually every design Cambria carries. These thinner profile stones are no lightweights when it comes to benefits. You will enjoy exceptionally durable, nonabsorbent, easy-to-maintain surfaces for years to come. Imagine the possibilities and alternative ways you can use Cambria stone for an attentiongrabbing design.
IVYBRIDGE
Use BLACKBROOK to create a stunning accent wall in your living room or a showstopping entryway. IVYBRIDGE makes a gorgeous backsplash for a modern kitchen. A fireplace surround is the epitome of elegance with KENDAL and makes a statement that your space is anything but boring. Establish a seamless look – and no grout lines – using RUXLEY from countertop to ceiling to create a warm, welcoming cottage core style kitchen.
DREAM IT… DO IT As Cambria’s Jenn Couch says, “If you can dream it, we can probably do it.” With not only a stunning array of designs but also multiple thicknesses, you can be sure of finding the right product for your home remodeling project. Ready to go bold with the seamless look of stone for you next project? Connect with ACo at liveaco.com to schedule a complimentary design consultation or visit their showroom and design studio at Hub & Spoke in Fishers.

“Basements have a lot of benefits, therefore it’s important to take care of certain things to ensure that you can enjoy a dry basement for years to come.” – JASON ELLS Senior Vice President, Custom Concrete
Most modern-day foundations are built to accept and remove a certain amount of water with sump pumps, waterproofing and drainage tiles. If enough of these things are not appropriate, however, and/or if you don’t properly maintain your yard and downspouts, your system can become overwhelmed and you’ll wind up with a flooded basement. “If you have any storage down there, it’s now sopping wet. If the basement is finished, now you’ve got wet carpet and drywall. It can be costly to fix,” says Jason Ells, Senior Vice President of Custom Concrete. “It’s an annoyance you don’t want, but these things can be prevented by some simple maintenance.” PRO TIP: All water will Spring is the perfect time to eventually find its take a walk around your property way down into your basement, according to assess things. For instance, to Constom Concrte’s make sure you have a proper Jason Ells, who notes slope away from the basement so that one mistake homeowners often that any patio or sidewalk water make is adding too runs away from the house rather much mulch to their flower beds. than pooling around it. You also want to maintain downspouts and keep gutters free of debris. In addition, when watering your lawn, check to see that the sprinkler system isn’t up against the foundation, thereby soaking the perimeter of the house. “All water will eventually find its way down into your basement,” says Ells, who notes that one mistake homeowners often make is adding too much mulch to their flower beds. “Sooner or later that goes above the waterproofing layer. Then you have soil on your bare foundation wall so technically you don’t have waterproofing at that point.” Basement windows should have a drain and be free of leaves and debris to dry properly. Ells has seen basements flood due to window drains not working. “I once saw a basement window where the water was up three feet high,” says Ells. “It looked like an aquarium!” Use dehumidifiers when humidity levels are high, make sure you have a battery backup for the sump pump, and as silly as it may sound, be sure it’s plugged in. “You’d be surprised how many people realize their sump pump got unplugged because their kid plugged in their Xbox,” says Ells. Also check to be sure sump pit lines are not obstructed by tree roots, and replace sump pumps every five to seven years. “Basements have a lot of benefits, therefore it’s important to take care of certain things to ensure that you can enjoy a dry basement for years to come,” says Ells. BEAT THE HEAT! 10 Hot Lawn Care Tips to Keep Your Grass Healthy This Summer
It’s official: the smell of freshly cut grass is one of the most popular, and stimulating, in the world. When grass is cut, it releases cis-3-hexenal, a compound that’s found in grapes, strawberries, and other fruits. It’s a heady cocktail of summer. But when your lawn is baked brown, looks patchy, feels scratchy, and is overrun with crabgrass or other weeds, taking a big whiff of fresh air isn’t nearly as satisfying. Learn how to keep your lawn healthy in the summer so it’s a joy for all of your senses! by Katie Mientka
2 2 H AV E N
SOME HELPFUL TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR GRASS GREEN IN THE SUMMER HEAT:
1. Don’t Wait for Summer!
In Indiana, most of our lawns are sown with cool season grasses, like perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and fine fescue. The best time to fertilize and nurture your grass is in the fall when the temperatures are falling (in the 50s is great) and the grass is still growing. This keeps your grass green into winter, promotes healthy root growth, and sets you up for a beautiful spring and summer.
2. Don’t Shave It Too Close.
Think haircut not buzzcut. When your grass is taller, it offers more shade for your lawn’s root system. This keeps it cooler, preventing browning, and it helps establish deeper, stronger roots. For our cool season grasses, aim for at least 2½ inches. At each mowing, you only want to cut about ⅓ of the length, so wait until the lawn is about 3⅔ inches. Do you need to go out with a tape measure? If it helps, by all means! But after a while, you’ll be able to eyeball it.
3. Get the Timing Right.
If possible, don’t save your mowing for weekends at noon. Weekends are fine, of course, but cutting the grass during the hottest part of the day can lead to dry, brittle, brown yards. It’s more beneficial to mow in the evening. You’ll leave essential moisture where it belongs – in the roots. It also gives your grass ample time to recover before the next long, hot summer day.
4. Sharpen Your Mower Blade.
What happens when you shave with a dull razor? Cuts and burns. Something similar happens to your lawn when your mower blade is not sharp. It tears the grass, resulting in ragged edges. This not only makes the lawn prone to browning, but it can also leave it vulnerable to disease-carrying organisms. After about 10 hours of mowing, you’ll likely need to sharpen your blade. If you’re getting close, now’s the time to cross that chore off your to-do list.
5. Go Greener with Grasscycling.
If you keep your grass at least 2½ inches and only mow the top ⅓ each time, go ahead and leave your clippings right where they are. “Grasscycling”
naturally fertilizes your lawn. And you can’t get much cheaper or easier when it comes to nurturing your grass!
6. Water Strategically.
Conserving water is an important goal for households all over the country. It’s especially critical in Indiana. Most of the state is abnormally dry or even experiencing mild drought conditions in 2021. So be wise with your water. For healthy grass, water deeply but infrequently. It’s best to water early in the morning so your lawn can dry out during the day and keep fungal diseases at bay. Grass needs about 1½ inches of water a week. If you’re not getting it through rain, supplement with smart irrigation. If your area is more prone to dryness and drought, consider installing some drought-resistant plants. These sip rather than guzzle water; during long periods without sufficient rain, they will add beauty, versatility, and durability to your lawn.
7. Don’t Use Your Lawn As a Parking Spot.
If you’re having a backyard get-together and need to direct people to a few spaces on your lawn, fine. But if you make it a habit of parking or driving here, it can compact the soil. This leads to poor root growth and makes fertilizer less effective.
8. Protect High-Traffic Areas.
Parking or driving over a ton of weight on your lawn is not optimal – but even regular foot traffic can damage your grass. By mid-summer, you may see signs of wear, especially if your grass is already brittle. One way to prevent this is to install a path through high-traffic areas. Pavers, stepping stones, and other materials can be a great way to spruce up your yard and protect your grass.
9. Know When to Fold ‘Em.
As busy as life is, sometimes yard maintenance takes a backseat. It happens! So, what if your lawn has become dormant (i.e. it turns brown to preserve nutrients and moisture, essentially “going to sleep” for the season)? Resist the futile urge to water it back into its former green glory. It should stay dormant for the rest of the season. Once the weather changes, it will recover.
Likewise, avoid fertilizing after midsummer. In fact, you should stop about a month before summer temps come to town. Fertilizing in peak heat can burn your grass or produce weak growth that will struggle. Again, do not fertilize dormant lawns. Wait until fall; they’ll green up and you can set up an effective maintenance schedule that’ll get you ready for next year.
10. Get Some Help!
Many of us enjoy taking care of our yards; there’s a deep sense of satisfaction at a job well done and a beautiful lawn sweeping out in front of us. But it can also be stressful trying to find the time to take care of all the necessary planning, preparation, and maintenance. Why not spend more time enjoying your property and less time worrying about it? GreenImage can help design and build your outdoor living space. Not only will the results be beautiful, they’ll be stress-free. With a 10-year warranty and maintenance-free plan, you can kick back and soak in the sights, sounds, and smells of summer. CUSTOM HOMES
CHRISTOPHER SCOTT HOMES:
A Perfect Partnership by Courtney Pope / photos by Sarah Shields Photography
Homeowners don’t often get a behind the scenes look into the vendor partnerships that help build their homes, so we sat down with Architecture Designer for Christopher Scott Homes, Emily Handke, to dive into their custom process, learn more about the partnership they’ve created with McComb Pella Windows & Doors, and hear why most clients become friends by the end of a home build. After graduating from Washington University with a degree in Architecture and working in commercial design in Seattle, Handke landed an unexpected position with a high-end residential 2 4 H AV E N
builder working predominately on waterfront, multi-million-dollar homes. It was here Handke learned the ins and outs of residential architecture, made great supplier connections and had the opportunity to expand on both traditional and modern styles. “After deciding to move back home to Carmel, Indiana, I searched for high-end residential builders and came across Christopher Scott. We have created a very unique partnership over the years. I truly love working with Chris, Scott, the entire team, our awesome vendors and lifetime clients turned friends,” said Handke.
Handke loves making a client’s experience 100% customized. From the date of their first meeting, to taking professional images, she asks personalized questions to fine-tune designs, walks clients through their house in both a 2D and 3D perspective, makes frequent site visits to check on progress and ultimately becomes an extension of the client’s family during the process and for years after. Handke explained, “During our first meeting, I literally ask hundreds of questions – about how they live, if they have kids or pets. We walk through their daily life and get into the nitty gritty of the functionality of their home.”
For the second meeting, the client really starts to see the vision come to life with a printed set of 2D plans and then a 3D model on the computer. Handke continued, “Starting on the exterior, we walk around the house and I can show them exactly where windows and doors are, colors, materials and beyond. It’s a super unique design tool because so many people are visual, and it doesn’t make sense otherwise. Within our 3D design program, I can also download specific Pella windows and doors to place them in the model, so while we are ‘walking’ the exterior or interior, we can see through the windows and look directly at them, viewing details such as style, color, sill, jambs, heights and widths in relation to walls or rooms!” Christopher Scott has a long-running relationship with McComb Pella. “We hear if a client isn’t satisfied with something, but we NEVER hear about installed Pella Windows with our clients. Pella supplies an array of styles, satisfying nearly all of our custom homes. From French traditional to oversized modern steel-look windows, Pella can usually suit the build,” said Handke. “Nacho is our McComb Pella sales consultant and he’s simply awesome. When I’m working on a project and have questions about a product line, cost analysis of a window design decision, or there’s a problem
on site, Nacho is there to assist our team,” Handke said. For Handke, a particular recent custom home build Christopher Scott completed stands out in her mind thanks to the beautiful Pella Windows. “We did something really unique with this home and hired a professional artist to stain and then white-wash the interior portion of the windows. As you can see from the images, this turned out beautifully!” stated Handke. Speaking of beautiful and maybe a bit rare, along with the final product of a Christopher Scott home, friendships normally blossom from first meeting to the big move-in day. Handke explained, “More often than not, clients become our close friends over the years, and we stay in touch beyond the final walk through! I believe that’s a true testament to our company, process, and relationships with people.” For more information on McComb Pella Windows for your home or new build, visit PellaIndianapolis.com. HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:
GROWING YOUR TEAM: How to Hire the Right People by Katie Mientka
When you hire an employee, you are not just bringing someone in to install flooring, service HVAC systems, or design compelling spaces for clients. You are hiring them to represent your company, to be your face in the field, to help you meet your business-building goals. The right employee is your biggest asset.
5 TIPS FOR HIRING THE RIGHT EMPLOYEES: 1
Start by Clarifying Your Job Descriptions and Needs. Define the scope of the job, including responsibilities, required skills, outcomes, and the work environment. Create accurate, concise job descriptions before you attempt to find the person who will fit like a glove.
2
Publicize Your Openings. Posting job openings on Indeed and ZipRecruiter is fine. Do it. But don’t stop there, or you may miss out on top talent. Job seekers say that social media is the most useful job search resource out there, and 79% of applicants use social media in their search.

Rethink Your Interview Process. So, shake your interview process up. Why not take the prospective employee out to meet your team? How do they interact? Do they treat everyone with respect? It’s easy to give the right answers in an interview room; but how do they act out in the “wild” or when the unexpected occurs?
4
Focus Hard on Soft Skills. Hard skills and education are essential, but some of those skills can be taught and acquired on the job. How about the candidate’s ability to listen? Communicate? Interact with diverse people?
5
Ask Your People. Want to find the right employees? Ask your current team members for recommendations.
Taking the time to hire smart is essential to your business’s success. When you’re thinking about growing your team, also consider what you can do to grow the next generation of talent. G&G CUSTOM HOMES:
Hidden Doors & Cool Spaces by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by The Home Aesthetic
Who didn’t love hide-and-seek as a kid? Truth be told, lots of adults get into the game, too, as evidenced by the uptick in hidden doors and spaces in new builds these days. Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes, has witnessed the phenomenon firsthand. “Almost every house these days, people want to incorporate a hidden door into a hidden space,” says Garcia. Though the idea isn’t new, the concept has evolved over time. In the past, homeowners often asked to create bookshelf doors that look like a bookshelf but actually open into a hidden room. Another common request was hidden doors that lead to bunkrooms or game rooms for kids. Now, however, adults are relishing the fun and are asking their architects to design cool, unique spaces just for themselves. For instance, Garcia is currently building a house that includes an upstairs office with a hidden door that opens to a circular staircase leading to a bourbon room. “The great thing with that bourbon room is that down below in the bar area, there’s a door that looks like a wine rack that’s built into the wall,” says Garcia. “You open that, and it goes into the bourbon room so it’s a dual hidden space!” Often homeowners see a hidden door in a Home-A-Rama showhome or online

somewhere and they decide they would like to incorporate one into their next build. So, Garcia sits down with them and lets the creative juices start flowing. “We come up with what room to hide and what type of door to do, whether it’s a bookshelf door, a flat panel door, a wine rack door, or a shiplap door,” says Garcia. To open them, you simply push in. There is no handle; they are on a pivot hinge. A lot of folks like blending these doors in with the surroundings of the walls. He recently did one where from the hallway, you see only wood paneling with no inkling that a door exists that leads to a bathroom. “The whole idea with that design was to enable one spouse to get up in the morning, shut the bathroom door, get ready, then sneak out through the hall and not have to walk back through the bedroom to disturb their spouse,” says Garcia, who has found that in almost every house, homeowners want to do something hidden – even inside of pantry kitchens. “I’ve done ones where it looks like it’s a kitchen cabinet with tall doors and then it opens into a pantry,” says Garcia. The hidden doors have even become somewhat of a game for those touring Home-A-Rama and other home shows. At last year’s event, Garcia had some kids giddily share that they had found the hidden bathroom door. “I told them, ‘Great! There’s still two more to find!” says Garcia, who also had created one in the downstairs bar and another in the basement leading to storage. “When we first started doing hidden doors and spaces, people said, ‘We want that Scooby-Doo bookshelf that opens up and you go into a space!’” says Garcia. “Now they request creative unusual spaces all throughout the house.” Create your ideal hidden space in your ideal custom home, it all starts with a conversation. Creating the Best Post-Pandemic Work Space for Your Team by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Graham Photography
Remote work and open concept workplaces are nothing new; in fact, it’s been a hot topic for companies like Business Furniture + Choreo for the past decade. However, the pandemic has put the ideas into hyperdrive as hybrid work and safe and compelling environments became top of mind for employers everywhere. “Suddenly, we were all working from home. Some business leaders were ready, and many were not. As a result, we were all forced to take a hard look at our company cultures and spaces and to wonder how we’d survive,” recalled Business Furniture + Choreo CEO and owner, Mary Beth Oakes. Business Furniture has paved the way as a Steelcase dealer and premier partner in Indianapolis for the last 100 years. The company has seen the area through the changes and trends of work environments, healthcare, and education. Gone are the days of sterile cubicles and desks as employers embrace new technology and remote work options. Oakes expanded the company services when she started Choreo in 2008, a change management strategy division helping to carefully choreograph change for leaders while improving cost efficiencies and enhancing effectiveness. “We’ve been helping companies drive strategic change and create spaces that help people

HOME TECHNOLOGY
BRAVAS:
LUXURY TECH AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON by Christy Heitger-Ewing
Convenience at our fingertips – it’s what we’ve come to crave. It’s why we embraced the remote control when it was first invented and why we delight at the creation of new apps that enable us to complete tasks with a simple press of a button or voice command. Mark Vyain knows just how much people appreciate convenience through automation. For more than three decades, he has worked in home technology. He was the president of Digitech Custom Audio & Video, Inc. for 31 years before his company merged with 15 other companies to form BRAVAS, which partners with homeowners, designers, architects, and builders to complete more than 3,500 smart home projects every year. Vyain, the principal and lead design/sales associate for BRAVAS, is thrilled with the scope of all they offer in whole-house smart home technology solutions. “This merger created a national footprint that has never before been achieved, certainly not in a luxury category,” says Vyain. Clients receive access to local companies with national resources. If you’re looking to incorporate automated custom concealed shades, for instance, or climate control zones for various parts of the house, they’ve got you covered. The same is true of ideal home acoustics as they can install the right sound absorbing materials to create a barrier to outside noise while providing superior audio experiences in music rooms, media/ gaming rooms, and private cinemas. In addition, they offer smart fixtures and lighting control systems so homeowners can set whatever mood they’re looking to create. For example, if you want to forego the alarm clock, you can set a “morning scene” that includes warm lighting, soft music, and shades that rise automatically. In addition to an expansive array of services and capabilities, another byproduct of having this national footprint is that they are now backed by a highly skilled executive team. “Historically, these companies have been owned by people like myself and Chad Brewer, who joined Digitech in 2003. When we’re working in the business every day, wearing all these different hats, it’s hard to be focused on strategic planning,” says Vyain. “But now we have a CEO, a president, and a CFO, plus the entire team that’s constantly working on new strategies and best practices.” 3 8 H AV E N
“This merger created a national footprint that has never before been achieved, certainly not in a luxury category.” –MARK VYAIN BRAVAS
Though they are now part of this larger corporation, the Indianapolis team has not changed one bit. In fact, Brewer, along with Jose Saavedra and Sheila Urban are all stakeholders in BRAVAS, making them more committed than ever to providing excellent customer service. “Clients can still come visit our showroom and meet us onsite,” says Brewer, General Manager. “We have the same service managers and project managers, plus Mark, the former owner of Digitech, is still here running sales.” Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor home automation, BRAVAS can do it all as they provide the entire home experience, from office to private cinema, media rooms, and outdoor entertainment. Plus, they provide peace of mind with home surveillance and security systems that can be checked anytime from anywhere in the world. And all of their products come with industry leading warranty and support capabilities. They are your trusted advisor with access to every brand, so they can solve your problem, not sell their product. If you’re looking to design a custom lifestyle technology package for your home, talk to the experts at BRAVAS by calling 317-580-1922 or visiting bravas.com.
From smart home automation to private cinemas, media rooms, home security systems, and more – BRAVAS is the answer for all your indoor and outdoor home technology needs.

FLATMADE CONCRETE CO.:
CONCRETE FINISHES AND MAINTENANCE What You Should Know by Shari Held
CONCRETE SEALERS AND FINISHES require different amounts of maintenance. Make sure you consider the frequency and cost of maintenance, says Ben Driskell, owner of Flatmade Concrete.

Trying to decide whether to go with a stamped or stenciled concrete finish for your next project? Deciding what kind of look you want the finish to have – wet and shiny, soft, or natural? The type of sealer you use plays a role in achieving and maintaining that look. “When thinking about a decorative finish, make sure you also consider the frequency and cost of maintenance,” says Ben Driskell, owner and operator of Flatmade Concrete. “Each sealer and finish requires a different amount of maintenance.” Here’s a basic overview of what you should know when it comes to concrete finishes and maintenance needs: A standard brushed finish is practically maintenancefree. Just wash it down when it gets dirty. Using a sealer is suggested. A penetrating sealer doesn’t provide a high-gloss and it won’t darken the finish, but it protects your concrete with little to no maintenance required. If you aren’t opposed to occasional maintenance, but prefer a more flexible maintenance schedule, consider an
exposed aggregate, decorative concrete finish such as pea gravel, or a shimmering sand matrix finish. You’ll need to wash and reseal this type of finish only every two to three years. A high-end, decorative finish such as stamped or textured concrete, which often has a secondary color that is protected by the sealant, requires more maintenance to keep it looking its best. On average, you’ll need to wash and reseal this type of finish every year. But, sealing is not an exact science. The timing of the washing and sealing maintenance cycle is different for each concrete project. “Sun exposure, traffic wear-and-tear, and exposure to deicing chemicals all play a role in the life expectancy of your sealing,” Driskell says. For high-quality decorative concrete work, connect with Flatmade Concrete by phone at 317-446-5549, or e-mail sale@flatmadeconcrete.com. You can also visit them online at flatmadeconcrete.com to learn more about their services.

INDY CUSTOM STONE:
Wow Factor INDY CUSTOM STONE TREATS EVERY PROJECT LIKE A WORK OF ART. Just a stone’s throw from Carmel’s Arts and Design District, long regarded as one of the state’s greatest artistic hubs, sits an unconventional artist’s workshop of sorts. It’s a 20,000-square-foot art gallery of granite, marble, quartz, and similar stone. While the creations brought to life here don’t adorn collectors’ walls, they do instill that signature “Wow!” factor so many works of art aspire to achieve. That’s the response Indy Custom Stone owner John Lunsford strives for from every customer. Indy Custom Stone treats every individual countertop, bathroom vanity or other custom furniture project as both science and an art. Operating out of their Carmel headquarters since 2014, Lunsford and his team of fabrication and installation specialists bring decades of combined experience to each unique application. It begins with the vast selection of premium-grade materials in the massive aforementioned showroom and fabrication facility and continues into the customer’s home. Instead, high-tech laser templating technology produces a digital layout with measurements accurate up to one sixty-fourth of an inch. The high-tech approach continues as 3D models of the customer’s countertops are projected into a digital drawing of their home, requiring much less of the client’s imagination in order to visualize how their stone will look as a finished product. The water saw and finishing router use thousands of gallons of water every day, cutting and polishing stone slabs while also ensuring excess dust doesn’t make its way into the air breathed by employees. Indy Custom Stone’s unique manufacturing water recycling system cleans the used water and produces an environmentally friendly, mud-like residue that goes on to be recycled for use by local landfills. From handpicking their exact stone slab to the state-of-the-art ways they bring each vision to life, Indy Custom Stone provides a unique, personal experience and simply stunning results Central Indiana homeowners can be proud to display. PRECISION DOOR SERVICE OF INDIANAPOLIS:
7 TIPS for Garage Door Safety by Shari Held
People don’t often think about garage door safety until there’s an issue – a child or family pet is injured, or the house security is compromised. Follow these seven tips to protect your family and property. 1 1Keep eyes on the door until it lowers completely. Within seconds a small animal or child can dart under the garage door and potentially get pinned to the floor. 2 1Mount wall push-button openers a minimum of five feet from the floor. Children and garage door openers can be a deadly combination. 3 1Keep remote controls locked up. You don’t want children to find them and use them like a toy. If you keep the remote control in your car, be sure to lock the car to protect your home from break-ins. 4 1Leave the garage door/ opener installation to the pros. Think you can handle the job yourself? Maybe you can, but if you install the opener improperly, you risk creating a hazardous situation. 5 1Replace your garage door opener if it doesn’t have a second safety reverse feature. If your home was built before 1993, your garage door opener may not have the now required second safety reversing feature. 6 1Test the sensitivity of your garage door opener. Place a roll of paper towels or a piece of wood under the door and lower it. Does it stop automatically when it detects resistance? If not, you’ve got a
potentially dangerous situation and your opener needs to be adjusted, preferably by a trained technician. 7 1Don’t assume you need a more powerful opener if your door feels heavy. Your door is probably just out of balance. The cause needs to be diagnosed by a trained technician.

DIGITAL SIGHT & SOUND:
Protect Your Pearls by Ray Rice
My uncle Dick graduated from a small Indiana high school in 1945, and, after a year at Purdue, he joined the Army. As the story goes, on the eve of his departure he gave his long time, high school sweetheart a beautiful strand of pearls. After his service, he returned to attend college in another state and fell out of touch with his sweetheart. While in college, he met a lovely woman who later became his wife. Together, they had a beautiful life with children, graduations, weddings and grandchildren until his wife passed away. A few years after the death of his wife, he attended his 50th high school class reunion. A woman entered the banquet room with grace, poise, a beautiful smile and a strand of pearls around her neck. Although they hadn’t seen each other in decades, he knew immediately it was her, his high school sweetheart, the first love of his life. She too had lived a full life and had recently lost her husband. Soon after the reunion they were married and had many joyful years together. They found themselves in love once again. I share this story because for my uncle and his sweetheart, those pearls were priceless. But for a thief, they could be sold for $100 on Craigslist. So, for goodness sake, protect your pearls, have an alarm system installed and use it. When choosing an alarm company, first seek out referrals from your neighbors, friends and reputable referral organizations. Keep in mind, that like most things for your home, you get what you pay for. A quality alarm system for a custom home will not cost $100 installed. Depending on the size of your home and the scope of what you want to secure, it could cost thousands of dollars. An alarm system for a custom home should be designed and installed with the same attention to detail as the home was designed and built. Big national alarm companies are excellent at offering generalized protection but lack the expertise and patience to gather information to get a custom design just right. Most of us are incredibly thoughtful about the things we bring into our home. Why would you not be as thoughtful when considering the design and purchase of an alarm system? Ask your friends for referrals. Take your time to do the research and get two or three bids. Have the alarm system installed and create a culture where your family uses it, all the time. Protect your pearls and call a custom alarm provider today. Digital Sight & Sound would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your security needs. Give us a call at 317-848-0101. 4 4 H AV E N

If you’re like most people, you probably haven’t given a lot of thought to ordering a generator lately. Generally, people wait until they’re gearing up for ice and snowstorms and the power outages that often accompany them. But power outages can happen in any season. A standby generator will help you manage power outages and maintain power for critical appliances, technology, and lights. Having a generator could be a matter of life or death if someone in your household relies on a life-support device. If you work from your home, a couple days or a week offline could halt your work if you don't have power to run your home office. And if you depend on a sump pump to keep your lower level dry, you could end up replacing damaged items or risk more serious water damage. Maybe those scenarios don’t apply to you, but that doesn’t mean
you won’t benefit from a generator. Have you considered the cost of replacing everything in your refrigerator or freezer? According to the FDA, food keeps for only four hours in a refrigerator after the power goes out, 48 hours in a fully-filled freezer, and 24 hours for a half-full freezer – that’s if you don’t open the door! A generator gives you peace of mind. “Generators are one of those items that you want to have when the need arises, and you must plan in advance of the need,” says Burtner Electric owner Jodi Burtner. "There’s currently a backlog on Generac generators and we would encourage you to contact us now to order yours so we can get it installed before bad weather is an issue." Get peace of mine with a new generator installed by Burtner Electric. Connect with them at 317-773-7663 or visit BurtnerElectric.com.

THE HIDDEN BENEFITS of Porcelain Tile by Suzanne Huntzinger
Daltile, the company customers have come to trust to beautify their homes and office buildings has a hidden secret. Underneath the luxurious, opulence of their porcelain tile, is a product that is environmentally friendly and friendlier for your health. Customers expect the stylish, elegant look of Daltile porcelain. Now you can expect a product that’s recyclable, reusable, and an excellent product for healthy living. Daltile, the nation’s leading tile manufacturer is committed to corporate responsibility by continuously seeking ways to develop their products and maintain their facilities and processes to meet high ecofriendly standards.
Daltile’s green manufacturing process starts with tile that is made from recycled or reclaimed materials. The company’s manufacturing facilities recover and reuse 100 percent of the wastewater generated during the production process, saving millions of gallons from being processed in local water treatment facilities. Daltile’s porcelain products also generate the smallest carbon footprint of any floor surface. The tile is free of harsh chemicals, plastics, and it’s green certified. Plus, Daltile gives 48 million pounds of materials that cannot be used to reuse programs, like brick and cement manufacturing and land reclamation. The company also goes the extra mile to save fuel by strategically placing their distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and sales centers within a 500-mile radius. Their savings in fuel consumption and emissions are passed along to the consumer. If you are not impressed yet, let yourself be impressed with a product that is made with your good health in mind, meeting healthy living standards for hospitals, schools, and other organizations. Daltile’s porcelain starts with pure, natural clays rather than synthetic materials. Even the glaze is water based, which means minimal amounts of harmful solvents are used in the production process. RENOVATION & REMODELING
ACo:
Construction & Remodeling Delays: OVERCOMING CHALLENGES TO YOUR PROJECT For many of us, the definition of “home” has evolved this year; it was work, it was school, it was the extent of our socializing and entertaining. This prompted a surge in demand for improvement projects, upgrades, remodels, and new builds – a surge that home industry professionals are striving to accommodate. Global supply chain issues have made this exponentially more difficult. What can you expect if you are about to launch your own project?
who updated their electrical system and discovered knob-and-tube behind their walls. Here are some common schedule-busting culprits:
WHAT CAUSES CONSTRUCTION AND REMODELING DELAYS?
Supply chain issues and long lead times
Construction and remodeling delays are not a new problem… just ask anyone 4 8 H AV E N
Hidden surprises (e.g. mold, foundation damage, electrical problems) DIY gone wrong Lengthy permit and inspection processes Change orders
Currently, the global supply chain is the single biggest factor in project delays.
And we’re not talking about just a day or two. Or even a week or two. Homeowners are looking at around 1-2 months or more. In a global economy, with a global supply chain, countless factors exert influence. The pandemic is just one of them, albeit a significant one. When you face project delays, you can blame: Increase in demand. As mentioned, construction and remodeling is booming. Extended lead times. The demand for everything from flooring and cabinets to tile and hardware to paint and stain is up. They are in short supply, and builders, remodelers, and homeowners alike face an even longer wait to start, or finish, projects. Overwhelmed ports. Cargo ships are stacked up at international ports (like Los Angeles and Long Beach, which handle half the country’s imports from Asia), and they cannot clear them fast enough. Labor shortages. Finding people to do jobs across the supply chain is a struggle. There is a severe lack of people to make, load, unload, and haul products and materials.
Lumber shortages. The cost of lumber has gone through the roof. Sawmills cannot meet demand, and they too, face labor shortages. Political Factors. Political dissension only adds fuel to the fire. Global unrest has an impact that we feel right here at home. Tariffs are one big issue: currently, there’s a 9% tariff on lumber from Canada, making it even more expensive to import and increasing price volatility.
Manufacturer slow-downs or shut-downs. The pandemic caused a critical slow-down in US manufacturing. It has not rebounded yet as companies struggle with parts shortages, absenteeism, and difficulty filling positions.
These factors all have a ripple effect that impacts product availability, pricing, and lead times. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Expect delays. They are inevitable – but there are ways that you can mitigate the impact: Make decisions as early in the process as possible and stick with them. Your selections need to be locked in and materials ordered before your remodeler can create an accurate project schedule. With guidance from your home industry professional, you can do it.
Choose “in stock” items from ACo vendors. You don’t have to worry about your new faucet, flooring, or range being stuck on a cargo ship in LA for who knows how long.
Work with your designer. They can help you select items from manufacturers that have shorter lead times or find alternatives to the product you had your eye on. ACo works closely with vendors to stay up to date on their lead times, stock items, and the best alternatives.
You don’t have to forgo your project or wait until the pandemic is over and the world calms down. You can still achieve remarkable results – but you do have to be realistic about your timeframes and how product/material selections impact your schedule. The ACo team works to be as proactive, flexible, and adaptive as possible in order to continue meeting your needs. Concerned about an upcoming project? We want you to be excited! Connect with ACo at liveaco.com to schedule a complimentary design consultation and get started on your next project.

Be flexible. Do you have your heart set on a specific product? Manage your expectations; it is important that you are realistic about how your selection will affect the timing of your project.
STAY POSITIVE AND BE REALISTIC. The demand for everything from flooring and cabinets to tile and hardware to paint and stain is up. They are in short supply, and builders, remodelers, and homeowners alike face an even longer wait to start, or finish, projects.

CARRINGTON HOMES:
Building Your Baby: The Perfect Time to Build Your Dream Home Might Be Now by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Graham Photography
Figuring out the best time to build a house is a bit like trying to decide when to have a baby. Timing may never seem perfect because there’s always XYZ to consider. In the case of the current housing market, the number one question builders are fielding from potential clients is, “Should I wait to build until lumber prices come down?” According to Carl McIntyre, owner of Carrington Homes, there is no simple answer, but he notes that even when lumber prices eventually fall, other items will continue to rise by five to six percent annually, including appliances, concrete, shingles, plumbing fixtures, and lighting fixtures. In addition, interest rates could go up. “If you add all of that up, even if lumber goes down, did you really gain anything?” asks McIntyre. 5 0 H AV E N
“Bottom line – if the timing is right for you to build, there’s no reason not to move forward.” The rapid rise in home prices has many bracing for a repeat of the 2006 housing bubble. McIntyre assures, however, that today’s housing market is fundamentally different than the market that led to the Great Recession. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, lending was loose whereas today standards for building and buying are more stringent. In addition, there is no excess of distressed properties for sale right now, and there are not a high percentage of cash-out refinances currently. “Before, people were borrowing as much as they could on their own, using it for cash flow, and borrowing against their home so it was false wealth,” explains McIntyre. “That put the whole housing market in a really bad spot because you had all these
people that owed way more on their home than what the home was worth. That’s not the case now.” Now there’s a real demand because there’s a true shortage of homes. According to Realtor.com, the nation, as a whole, has 45 to 50 percent less inventory than was available last year. Moreover, the National Association of Realtors reports that to get back to a healthy supply level equivalent to six months of monthly demand, an additional 2.7 million homes should be on the market. Carrington Homes is doing their part by erecting luxury custom homes in the Indianapolis area. Established in 1992 by McIntyre and
his parents, Carrington Homes is dedicated to providing their clients with excellence in design, communication, and a positive attitude. Because they are building full-blown $1M and $2M custom homes, they don’t have standard specifications or standard plans. “Everyone’s wishes are different,” says McIntyre. “Some clients want massive audiovisual equipment while others want high-end appliances for cooking gourmet meals.” After meeting with clients, Carrington’s in-house designer creates a preliminary design. Next homeowners fill out a questionnaire that shows their preferences (e.g., stamped vs. regular concrete, Wolf appliances vs. GE, etc.) before pre-shopping essential elements like flooring, cabinetry, countertops, and appliances. The team at Carrington then creates a preliminary estimate for the home. After plans & proposals are finalized, building

KITCHEN & BATH REMODELING
KOHLER SIGNATURE STORE BY CRESCENT SUPPLY:
INVITING TRANSFORMATION Find Kitchen & Bath Inspiration at Kohler Signature Store by Christy Heitger-Ewing
This past year as we were forced to spend more time at home, we learned patience, resolve, and resiliency. We also learned what rooms we were itching to renovate! Topping that list for many homeowners was an interest in revamping their kitchens and bathrooms, and the team at Kohler Signature Store by Crescent Supply was happy to guide the process. Owned by Crescent Plumbing Supply, a fourth-generation family-owned company out of St. Louis that has been in business since 1905, the Kohler Signature Store carries all the Kohler products, including Kallista (Kohler’s luxury line) in addition to their decorative brands such as Robern, (mirrors, vanities, and lighting), and Ann Sacks tile, they are a one-stop-shop for your bathroom needs. “We help contractors, builders, designers, and the general public, working on everything from a quick kitchen faucet update to a full bathroom remodel,” says Monica Dietterick, Kohler Signature Store manager. A number of other home improvement retailers are also located near the Kohler Signature Store, including Grand Appliance, Jack Laurie Group (soon to come), Arhaus, Ethan Allen, and the Container Store. “That’s convenient for customers who want to shop home improvement up and down the street,” says Dietterick, noting that they offer a conference room, free of charge, for clients to meet with designers and contractors who want to go over selections. If a customer is having a hard time visualizing an end product, for $499, they can engage in the virtual bathroom design program in which the client gets three virtual appointments with a designer as well as unlimited meetings with the Kohler consultant. After taking a styling quiz, the Kohler team goes over the finishes and selected products and then the designer creates a computer-assisted rendering of the space. “It can be really scary designing a bathroom and thinking, ‘I don’t know if this is going to look good,’” says Dietterick, who reports that customers she has worked with are always pleased. “The rendering versus the after pictures look exactly alike. There are no surprises.” Their creatively designed, interactive showroom is set up to showcase everything from the showers and vanities to the accessories that go with the faucet and shower. They also have a beautiful finish wheel so clients can see all the hardware finishes they offer, along with cast iron colors and vanity finishes. Kohler Signature Store by Crescent Supply is located at 4335 East 82nd Street, Suite 107, Indianapolis. SEALING
SEAL NOW OF INDIANAPOLIS:
HIT THE DECK for Summer Fun by Suzanne Huntzinger
Summer is officially here, and with it many homeowners are ready to open their deck, pergola, or fence for business. Whether you are a grill master who loves to host a good barbeque, have kids running around in and out of the pool, or just like to enjoy a quiet evening outside, Seal Now will help you protect your deck or other wood structure from the elements of both nature and summer fun. Their formula uses high quality proprietary product to seal, waterproof, preserve, and harden your wood. “We do it the opposite of traditional thinking,” says Annie Selle of Seal Now. “Instead of staining the wood first then sealing it, we seal it first to protect the wood. Our top priority is to help you protect your investment.” HOW DOES IT WORK? SEAL NOW OF INDIANAPOLIS 317.548.2002 sealnow.com

Seal Now’s permanent sealant penetrates the wood of your deck, forming an internal seal, which slows seepage, blocks dampness, and prevents mold, fungus, and warping. The experts at Seal Now start with
prepping the deck by washing the surface, stripping and removing the old stain, if necessary, before applying the sealer. The one-time application procedure leaves a clear, natural finish. “Many of our customers choose this option because it leaves the wood deck in its natural state, and with yearly cleaning, it preserves the look and integrity of the wood,” explains Selle. Seal Now’s products comes with a 25-year warranty, making your deck virtually maintenance free. If you prefer to add color to your deck, Seal Now offers that option as well. They can seal the deck and add a high-quality oil-based stain. “It’s aesthetically pleasing and helps match the home’s color scheme,” Selle adds. Although the sealer is permanent, wood stain will need re-applied every 2-4 years. Get your deck protected and your concrete sealed and stained before summer really gets into full swing. Call Seal Now at 317-548-2002 or visit sealnow.com to care for and protect all your outdoor investments.
