INDIANA DESIGN CENTER:

Spring Fling! RENEWAL IDEAS FOR YOUR HOME by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Anna Powell Teeter

It’s that time of year when homeowners start looking for ideas to renew their space. New artwork and décor can accomplish this with a high impact. According to Andrea Kleymeyer, Executive Director of the Indiana Design Center, people don’t often think about art until the end of the project. Kleymeyer recommends doing the opposite. “A designer at one of our galleries has a motto: ‘Start with art,’” says Kleymeyer. “Then design a Consider pops of color room around it.” Not only does art add through the careful personal flair, but selecting pieces from selection of artwork area galleries is a great way to support that speaks to you. Warm tones and local artists. textures from nature Another way homeowners choose can refresh a space and to refresh their space is by bringing the create a warm, inviting environment. outdoors in via natural materials. “We’re seeing a lot of reclaimed wood in coffee and console tables that are handmade from trees or other natural items that are salvaged locally,” says Kleymeyer. Succulents are also wildly popular, as is the fiddle fig tree. “Think about what inspires you in nature,” says Kleymeyer. “If you’re a beach person, perhaps it’s seashells or coral.” When it comes to sprucing up the outdoor living space, look to purchase furniture, fabrics, and electronics that echo your interior décor, but can withstand the elements. This is key since so many people like to entertain on patios, porches, and decks. Finally, consider hiring a designer who can help with everything from the big picture concept all the way down to the small details and execution. The Indiana Design Center is located at 200 Rangeline Road in Carmel. For more information, visit indianadesigncenter.com or call 317-569-5975.

Kristen Hale, co-owner of Kent Shaffer Homes Inc., Indianapolis, said she was proud of their custom home construction business being featured prominently at the Home-A-Rama House in Chatham Hills, and winning the People’s Choice award in the Home-A-Rama Builder’s Show. She is also excited that clients greatly appreciate Kent Shaffer Homes’ Smart Home Packages. For the last 30 years, Kent Shaffer has been the gold standard of custom home construction in central Indiana. “We have top of the line commercial appliances with custom ranges and hoods,” Hale said. “We offer custom railing and real rain heads in the home’s master shower, or in a steam shower in the basement bath.” Kent Shaffer Homes also offers hand made brick on home exteriors, James Hardie Exterior Trim & Siding; Energy Star Appliances; and two stage high efficiency furnace/tankless water heaters with a circulating system. HOME-A-RAMA PEOPLE’S CHOICE For this year’s Home-A-Rama, Kent Shaffer Homes decided to build a Modern Farmhouse. “We built on what is perhaps the best lot in Chatham Hills, overlooking the Pete Dye Golf Course,” Hale stated. “The design makes use of the home’s location by using several large picture windows that bring the outdoors into your living room.” Soft cedar and handmade Carolina brick on the exterior lend an upscale and elegant approach to the classic Farmhouse elevation. “Inside, an open-floor plan and sophisticated finishes blend harmoniously to make this a truly ‘livable’ and functional home,” Hale said. “From your gorgeous chef ’s kitchen, you can look out on the living room and dining room as your children do their homework, or guests mingle.” A walk-out basement with daylight windows gives the basement entertaining area a first floor feel. “The living area extends outside, as a patio extends from the master bedroom to the main outdoor living space,” Hale stated. “This showcase will be a home you can’t wait to return to each day.” Hale noted that the soft white facade, aged brick and cedar creates a sophisticated elegance. “James Hardie Exterior Trim & Siding did an excellent job!” “We felt it important to carry that same appeal to the interior, infusing impressive details where needed, giving each space an eclectic, artistic finishing touch,” Hale said. “Adding exterior elements to the interior grounds the home with the use of stone, wood and metal.” Organic and textural finishes capture your eye and bring a feeling of calm, creating an easy-living atmosphere. This home is current, while giving a wink and nod to the classic farmhouse. “Our Farmhouse is a pleasant mixology, where timeless design is remembered and blended with modern conveniences. Our intent was to invent inviting spaces which embrace you with an enveloping hug. The Wow Factor of Video Walls

CREATING A DYNAMITE HOME MEDIA ROOM by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Leah Tribbett

“With a set-up like this, your home is guaranteed to be the number one spot in your neighborhood for friends and family to congregate!” – NATHAN ROBISON Engineer, Digital Sight & Sound

For years, the owners of the best sports bars in Indianapolis have relied on Nathan Robison, Sales Engineer for Digital Sight & Sound, to provide the best show in town. For instance, he recently installed a massive 3x3 video wall (three TVs tall by 3 TVs wide) at the Ale Emporium in Fishers. These edge-toedge televisions can be viewed individually or as one gigantic picture. As the heavyweight champions of sports bar audio video systems, the team at Digital Sight & Sound can recreate that exact same magic in residential basements. Dedicated home theaters, once all the rage, have been fading in popularity, passed up by media rooms that offer a more functional and inclusive experience. “It’s kicking down the walls of the theatre and conjoining it with a basement rec area,” says Robison. “So, whether you’re shooting pool, sitting at the bar, or relaxing in the theatre seats, everyone is in the same space as opposed to being locked in a dark room.” In a media room, a projector may be on one side of the room with a 2x2 video wall near the bar where viewers can watch either one big high-definition image or four independent images. Perfect for watching four different games during March Madness! “With a set-up like this, your home is guaranteed to be the number one spot in your neighborhood for friends and family to congregate!” says Robison. Digital Sight & Sound is located at 1044 Summit Drive in Carmel. For more information, call 317-848-0101 or visit dssindy.com.

HOME ORGANIZATION

THE BAER MINIMALIST:

YOU’VE TIDIED…

NOW WHAT?! by Maria Baer

For many of us, spring signifies a fresh start! We set to surveying our belongings, decluttering items, re-organizing what is left and finally figuring out what to do with all that unused stuff. As a professional organizer, I find clients struggle with getting rid of items because they feel a sense of guilt – maybe you spent too much money and never used it, it was a gift from a loved one, or carries special memories for your family. The following options may help ease the burden of letting those items go.

DONATE TO A WORTHY CAUSE There are many organizations throughout the Indianapolis area where your items can be placed directly in the hands of someone in need. Hop on over to thebaerminimalist.com and download the Indianapolis Donation Guide (available on the home page).

CONSIGN TO RECOUP SOME CASH There are consignment shops around town dedicated to women’s, men’s, and kids clothing along with housewares. Be picky about what you try to sell as it can be more trouble than it is worth.

PASS ALONG TO FAMILY For those items that have been passed down throughout the years, I suggest taking photos of the heirloom. Pull these photos together into a photobook and share the story behind the item next to the image. Imagine how special it would be to have a coffee table book filled with a history of your family and the items that meant most, while freeing your home of clutter. ELECTRIC & LIGHTING

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

Outdoor Security Lighting ILLUMINATE WHILE PROTECTING YOUR HOME by Suzanne Huntzinger

SECURITY LIGHTING prevents unwanted visitors from getting too close to your home, but also safely lights the way for invited guests.

When choosing outdoor lighting, it’s just as important to choose something that goes beautifully with the décor as it is to provide security. Security lighting illuminates the dark areas around your house, preventing unwanted visitors from getting too close. “It gives the homeowner an extra sense of safety,” says Jansen Burtner, Electrician at Burtner Electric, “But even though security often means protection from unwanted guests, it also gives light to invited guests. They get to the house safely and avoid tripping while going to the porch or down the driveway.” The most effective way to provide security lights is to illuminate large areas at night. “Make sure all dark areas of the backyard, sides of the house and the front of the house are brightly lit,” Burtner says. Customers have a few options for security lighting. There are motion lights which turn on when they sense nearby movement, lights controlled by a switch and dusk-to-dawn lights. Most homeowners use post lights to light the driveway and porch lights to see near the front door. “Many models of security lighting allow the homeowner to control the direction of the lights,” Burtner says, “Aim the light close to the house or far from it to maximize the area illuminated. Just be careful not to shine the lights into the neighbor’s house.” Identify the dark spots outside your home, then call 317-773-7663 or visit the experts at Burtner Electric to update your security lighting.

CONCRETE CAREERS

CUSTOM CONCRETE:

The Foundation

for

Quality Careers 2 0 H AV E N

Twenty years ago, Amanda Burcham walked into the small but thriving Custom Concrete offices and started her first day as a dispatcher. Hired directly by co-founder Tim Carr, she spent the majority of her time making sure crews knew where to go and what work needed to be done. Her desk was in a house-turned-office, and she knew every employee by name. Amanda shares, “Our offices were in houses, and the majority of the workers were on crews, not sitting behind a desk. Today, we have about 225 employees and a beautiful office building where we’re more spread out, but I still know just about everyone.” Since 1998, Custom Concrete has changed – evolved from its humble beginnings to a fast-growing company. Today they operate from their corporate headquarters in Westfield just west of US-31 near Grand Park and many other new construction projects off of State Road 32. This year marks 50 years in business for the Hamilton County-based company. “Westfield has really grown in the past twenty years,” says Amanda. “The city has taken off, and Custom Concrete’s been a part of that growth.”

Today, Amanda is a senior account coordinator splitting her time between managing subcontractors and working alongside Custom Concrete’s sales team, assisting with billing and purchase orders. “If you had told me I’d work for a company that pours foundations for over 20 years back in the 90s, I would have said you were crazy,” she laughs. “But, there’s something different about Custom Concrete. I’ve grown up with the company. And, at the end of the day, I really respect the Carr family. They have built a great organization. The people he has hired over the years have stuck with it because we all believe in the vision for the business and appreciate the way the company is managed.” Founded in 1969, Custom Concrete has been a longstanding Westfield, IN business with deep roots to the area. Through the years, builders, contractors, and homeowners have grown to depend on Custom

Concrete’s expertise because so much depends on getting it right. It’s a reputation the Carr family built for themselves and carries on today through employees like Amanda. “It’s not an industry where you would think there would be a lot of female workers, but I have never felt like the odd man out. Custom Concrete feels like home,” she says. Custom Concrete’s dedicated focus on building a business environment that is based on the sound principles of trust, integrity, pride, and faith has attracted ideal team players for decades. Opportunities for growth, both for the individual and the company, continue to abound. If you’re interested in working with the dedicated team at Custom Concrete on your next project call us at 317-896-2885 or visit us online at customconcrete.com.

HOME REALTY

RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:

Get Your Home

MARKET READY FOR SPRING by Phil Hotle

2 2 H AV E N

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER:

INTERVIEW REAL ESTATE AGENTS:

In a staged home you will never see a stack of unread magazines or a cluster of mail on the table. Keep your home as neat as possible by reducing clutter on shelves and surfaces. Put away items that are regularly on your kitchen counter or in the sink and pack away the family photos that gather dust.

Your choice of a listing agent will make a big difference in how quickly your home sells, so interview several agents. See who has the right experience with similar homes in your area. A real estate agent with a great marketing plan and deep local knowledge is extremely important as you sell and buy!

START PACKING:

IMPROVE YOUR HOME:

You will eventually need to do this anyway, so get organized now. Boxing up items will make your space look larger and neater when it’s time to show your home. Figure out if you need to rent a storage facility while your home is on the market.

A major renovation isn’t necessary, but you can make minor improvements to refresh your home. Replace bad caulk in bathrooms, update old ceiling fans and light fixtures, or change switch plates and doorknobs for a clean and neat appearance. Consider painting your front door or touching up the trim.

If you spend the winter months preparing for the spring market, you will be ready to move quickly when buyers come out of hibernation and new houses come on the market!

WINDOWS & DOORS

Franklin Window & Door Holds Exclusive

DESIGNER EVENT by Matt Keating / photos by Leah Tribbett

2 4 H AV E N

Franklin Window & Door’s exclusive event at their Carmel showroom on February 6 was a great success featuring several innovative companies and products. Cori Brown, CEO and Window & Door Designer at Franklin, was thrilled to host top interior designers from Indianapolis and Carmel for this wonderful showcase. “We featured Squid, an exciting new way to dress up windows with self-adhesive fabric for both Residential and Commercial products,” Brown said. The Squid fabric allows you to see out but stops people outside from looking in during the day. It’s a great way to protect your privacy. It’s also easy to install without any fixtures or fittings. Squid is also versatile. It’s the only window covering that can be used with any type and shape of window. The fabric Squid uses has a beautiful, natural feel. Its unique texture makes it easy to care for, and suitable for any interior or type of architecture. “We also showcased Kundalini Lighting, an Italian lighting company based out of Milan,” Brown says. Kundalini Lighting is popular for “creating illumination that directly addresses awareness and intention within spaces.” “I love that all of the lighting is produced by a different designer, and they provide information about the designer on their website,” Brown said. “I love that the lighting is like a ‘work of art.’ Some are colorful, while others are elegant. It’s a nice variety, but even more so, really shows the personality of the designer.” The Kundalini Designers’ lighting at the event included the work of Alberto Saggia and Valerio Somella. Saggia graduated from Politecnico of Milan in 2004, with a specialization in Lighting Design. He immediately began working with Métis Lighting Studio in Milan. Over his 10 years there, he carried out several important projects all around the world, attending the entire development of custom-made lighting solutions for various projects. Sommella graduated cum laude from the Politecnico of Milan in 2004 and began his design career working with Stefan Giovannoni. He later moved to Amsterdam, where he joined Marcel Wanders’ team. He settled back in Milan, and opened his design studio, where he designs products in different fields, from furniture to consumer goods and lighting for both Italian and international clients. Saggia and Somella designed the Kushi Floor lamp, an opal diffuser made of two layers of mouth blown glass. The Franklin event also included The Evita AquiliAlberg, a dimmable Florida lamp. It has a composite body structure of multilayered steel and techno polymers, with an opal matt diffuser. AcquiliAlberg is a Milan-based international design and architectural studio that boasts prestigious collaborations both in the field of architecture and the design sector. The studio designed for Kundalini for the first time, using the most innovative technologies of production. Also featured at the Franklin event was the work of Lorenzo Finestre. AIR QUALITY

HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

THE INVISIBLE PROBLEM Impacting Almost Every Home

While the story of air pollution in the environment is not a new one, it’s probably news to you that your home’s indoor air quality is probably worse off than outside. According to the EPA, indoor air is likely 3 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. When you couple that with the fact that 90% of our lives are spent indoors, you can imagine the impact it can have on your heath. As construction standards have pushed for more efficient homes, 2 6 H AV E N

the decrease in filtration (the natural exchange of outdoor air) has led to “tighter” homes. That means more combustion air from cooking, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from building materials, and chemicals from cleaning products are trapped and circulated inside your breathing air. As this phenomenon has grown, Homesense Heating and Cooling has done its homework. “We believe that it’s the duty of any heating and cooling provider

to go beyond boxes that make hot and cold, to truly look out for homeowners’ health and safety when it comes to indoor air,” said Brian Schutt, co-founder of locally owned Homesense Heating and Cooling. Having personally dealt with allergies and illness with his family, he decided to test and try a variety of solutions. “We’ve tried just about everything on the market to clean our air,” said Schutt, “With two young kids regularly in the petri dish of public schools, we’ve seen a measurable change in their health this winter.” The reason for that change, according to Schutt, is the Reme Halo® whole home air purifier. This awardwinning indoor air quality technology is professionally installed inside your home’s duct system, providing purified air to every cubic inch that your central HVAC system reaches. The Reme Halo® kills up to 99% of bacteria and viruses, along with reducing airborne particulates like dust, dander, pollen and mold spores. “An unexpected surprise has been the near elimination of some common household odors like when we cook or our dog has been outside,” Schutt concluded. If you are concerned you might have an invisible air health problem in your home, Homesense is ready to help. Contact them at 317-670-0171, and have a certified indoor air quality (IAQ) specialist analyze your air health and provide solutions like the Reme Halo® today.

n Indiana, we are graced with four seasons – seasons that might not seem ideal for outdoor living but Rob Delaby, Oasis Outdoor Living and Landscapes owner and creative architect, sees it differently. Delaby and Oasis Outdoor are committed to designing outdoor living spaces for all seasons, their commitment to unique and specialized outdoor living designs continues to drive their business forward. “The outdoor space doesn’t have to be just for spring and summer. With the right design and planning, your backyard can be a beautiful, functional space throughout the year,” Delaby said. Oasis Outdoor can help you transform your covered patio or gazebo into a cozy entertainment space with the addition of an outdoor TV, fireplace, and patio heaters that allow you to enjoy your space even as the temperature drops. to store blankets and a supply of hot cocoa to keep guests warm under the stars and you have instantly created the ideal place for neighbors to gather and for your family to connect all year. Assisting the customer in answering the question, “How will I use my space?” is critical to the Oasis Outdoor team’s success over the years. Each project being distinctively unique, the company thrives on tailoring each backyard design to be functional year-round and to represent the homeowner’s lifestyle. “We have often said as a family, the outdoor space extended the living space of our home. It’s made our home feel larger and more accommodating for all seasons,” said The Day Family in Fishers, Indiana. “Help us understand how you want your outdoor space to look and feel and how you will use it for family or entertaining throughout the year,” Delaby said, “tell us what you need and what you want, and we will give you a plan with the solution.” One of the key members in designing that solution is lead landscape designer, Rob Shea. “It’s really exciting to work with the customers to go through all the different aspects of landscaping and their specific property,” explains Shea. “We go beyond adding a patio and calling it a day. If we see something that might better improve the value of the property, we will suggest those ideas. Ideally our designs will support outdoor living – spring, summer, fall and even winter.” Delaby knows the expense and concern that goes along with a backyard renovation so they offer an initial complimentary evaluation to review the site, discuss needs, and get a firm understanding of how the space will be used throughout the year. From there we, as designers, take the clients vision and show those ideas in fantastic detail. Our clients get excited when they realize they can see and understand what their outdoor living space will look like through our cutting-edge technology,” says Shea. “We really enjoyed the 3-D walkthrough before we finalized the design. We got a perfect idea of what the space would look like. Today, it’s nice to come out to our patio to talk, read or have dinner. There’s enough room to entertain and host small gatherings. TILING

DALTILE:

Transforming a Showroom into a

GALLERY by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Amy Payne

Daltile, the country’s leading manufacturer and distributor of ceramic tile and natural stone, recently revamped their entire Indianapolis showroom. It has been transformed into a bright gallery that shows off their spectacular products in all their glory. Modeled after the corporate offices in Daltile’s larger cities like Chicago and Dallas, the walls are lined with a wide array of options. “Now when people come in, they get a great visual of how things look,” says Jenn Wilson, Indy’s Daltile showroom designer. Rather than selection boards, the gallery displays pre-grouted, pre-made panel selection boards, enabling clients to see exactly how the tile will look on their wall or floor. In addition, on the side of each of those panels is a listing of the available colors in that tile line. There’s also a library wall so clients can lay pieces out to get a better idea of the size and style. “Daltile is revamping all 250 of their sales service centers across the country, but we are lucky enough to be one of the first in the Midwest to benefit from the redesign,” says Wilson. “Everybody from designers to architects to builders are amazed with the quality of the showroom.” Daltile, who partners with dealers, contractors, and commercial customers, is eager to host quarterly events in their new showroom, including a spring open house and BBQ. “We’ve had a tough time displaying all of our products in the past,” says Wilson. “Now we’re not limited on space. We love it!” Enjoy a visit to the freshly overhauled Daltile gallery in Fishers and find the right tile for your next project. Empty Nesters Build for

Room to Grow by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Leah Tribbett

EMPTY NESTERS Merilee and Tom Klootwyk decided to build their new home based on lifestyle, rather than just a traditional downsizing. The result is a unique home perfect for making new family memories.

Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes has witnessed a trend in home building as homeowners design houses to suit their lifestyle. “I have clients who are technically ‘empty nesters,’ but they don’t want to build a typical ‘empty-nester home,’” says Joe. Such was the case for Merilee and Tom Klootwyk, who hired Joe to build a home in Westfield’s Chatham Hills. Though the couple originally planned to downsize, it soon became clear that they wanted ample space to hold their growing family. “We wanted to be able to host everyone for holidays,” says Merilee. Their oldest daughter is married with a one-year-old son. Their second daughter is engaged, and their youngest daughter likes coming home on college breaks and inviting friends over. “At first, we questioned if we were doing the right thing, adding square footage. In the end, we absolutely did,” says Merilee. They also made sure to design a home they could age into. So, the master suite is on the first floor with a reading room adjacent to the bedroom. The family’s favorite features of the home include the outdoor living area, complete with heaters for chilly evenings, and the kitchen’s “snug” – a booth that resembles the kind you’d find at a diner. Merilee admits that initially they were nervous about moving out of their home of 23 years. “We made many great memoires there, but it’s amazing how quickly this place became home,” she says. “Now we’re making new memories here!” If you are looking to grow your empty nest along with your family, visit ggcustomhomes.com to learn more about G&G.

Bourbon

BUZZ 4 0 H AV E N

So whats all the buzz about? If you have an adventurous spirit and like to explore, then you cannot deny the current “buzz” revolving around bourbon! It’s one of the movements in today’s culture that has everyone considering what their palette might be craving. Lodged right in the middle of corn country, next-door to Indiana, Kentucky houses over 70 licensed bourbon distilleries. Most of these are located near Lexington, Bardstown, and Frankfort. Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail gives Hoosiers a real opportunity to take a short road trip to tour how this corn byproduct is capturing the attention of today’s world! Bourbons have become popular due to their smooth, sweet, and smoky finish. Additionally, bourbons are known for their variety and qualities unique to each distillery. Much like a wine vintner, a bourbon craftsman can customize their work to attract a variety of palettes. There are endless ways to naturally embellish the final flavor of a bourbon, from the blend of grains, to the char of the barrel, to the aging process and beyond. Similar to wine, today’s bourbons are being paired and served in some very creative ways; room temperature, with a whiskey stone or on ice, or combined with unique ingredients for a craft cocktail. Bourbon is taking over cocktail menus with ingenious concoctions from creative bartenders. But unlike an uncorked bottle of wine, bourbon doesn’t go bad. You can have a 2 oz pour and shelve it. It will be waiting for you the next time you decide to indulge, and customize your very own bourbon buzz! Much like a seasoned bourbon distillery, Stone Artisans shares its experience and expertise in creating unique countertops and surfaces. Stone Artisans can create a

stunning bar or surface for your very own bourbon space. “One of our favorite customizations was an extraordinarily unique residential bar. We met and exceeded our client’s dream of the perfect space,” says Cory Kroger, owner of Stone Artisans. “We creatively incorporated a mixture of mediums such as heat-treated metal strapping with hand-forged rivets inlayed into the granite. We also added an arch to the barn wood covered wall and bar top to replicate a wine barrel.” (photo shown above) Next time you’re out and about sipping bourbon at your favorite bar or relaxing at home with your single barrel bourbon of choice, remember that Stone Artisans can assist you in customizing your space. They have designed and installed hundreds of bars and kitchens in the midwest, while capturing all their client’s desires and dreams. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Stone Artisans can craft a custom project for your home or business. DRAPERY STREET:

THE #1 OVERLOOKED DECISION

When Designing a New Home

Planning for curated lighting and privacy through window treatments is often overlooked in the build process by homeowners, architects, and builders. However, window treatments make a surprisingly big impact on how you enjoy your home. If you’ve ever experienced a room that is uncomfortably hot from afternoon sun or tried to fall asleep in a bedroom riddled with light, you know how important the right window treatments can be. If you plan to have motorized and minimalist treatments, you’ll want to prewire and plan the correct size spaces for hidden treatments. If you skip this important step, you’ll limit your options significantly for true modern recessed treatments. Recessing allows for treatments to virtually disappear while giving you a chic and modern look when closed. Drapery Street’s 10-step process ensures your project is done perfectly and you only get one chance to do this right. We manage the entire process so you can relax and know every detail is covered.

Finding a client’s unique jewelry style and needs takes a special touch. Just ask Michael Neylon, President and Master Craftsman of Master Jewelers. Starting with only $137 and his hand tools, Mike built Master Jewelers from a small operation out of his garage, performing work for jewelers around Central Indiana, to the beloved custom jewelry store it is today. His love for jewelry is evident in every facet of the business, but shines through most in the relationships he develops with each and every person he assists. “We really get to know our clients,” Neylon said recently in his store. “They become like friends and end up sharing our joy with each new creation we dream up. We have a staff filled with true artisans and craftsmen.” Master Jewelers takes time to partner with their clients to discover their individual tastes and needs. Elissa, one of our clients, wanted to have a special diamond mounted in a custom ring in her mother’s honor. After many failed attempts by her local jeweler, he suggested visiting Master Jewelers. To her surprise, Michael and his team created a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. “My ring is AMAZING. I absolutely love everything about it. It is hard to find words to describe how I feel and how happy I am to have my mom with me every day. You and the whole staff have been so supportive and on top of everything since the moment I walked through that door and I can’t thank you enough!!! I know you carry the people you have loved and lost in your heart and through the memories you made but it is almost comforting to have something tangible that I can look down and see every day and know she is with me. Master Jewelers and you gave me that! We will be in touch! I will be in to get it cleaned and inspected, of course! Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!” – Elissa If you need advice on repair work or custom creation, consultations are always provided free-of-charge by the staff of Master Jewelers. They are also happy to clean and inspect your jewelry for free, even if your items were purchased elsewhere. “We offer the best staff expertise you can find,” he says. “We provide award-winning, high quality custom designs, as well as diamonds that are sourced from mines that adhere to strict labor, trade and environmental standards. That is very important to us and our clients.” Genevieve Ryann, Graduate Gemologist, said customers appreciate the broad spectrum of resources Master Jewelers provides. “We can really do whatever the customers want,” she said. “They appreciate the fact that we have so much to choose from, both in-store and through custom creation. We work with designers, gem cutters, and diamond mines from around the world.” Find your style and visit the specialists at Master Jewelers for a truly personalized jewelry buying experience.

CUSTOM HOMES & REMODELING

WHICKER CONSTRUCTION:

Where Creative Craftsmanship & Quality Meet: WHICKER CONSTRUCTION & McCOMB/PELLA WINDOWS & DOORS by Christy Heitger-Ewing

5 0 H AV E N

Whether you’re looking to build a brand-new custom home, complete with your own individualized touches, or you want to breathe new life into an existing space in your home, the Whicker Construction team can make your dreams a reality. Whicker Construction is a low-volume, upscale, custom builder/remodeler with a customer-driven approach. Building approximately 6-8 custom homes a year, as well as 12-18 remodels or whole-house “refreshers,” they purposefully limit the amount of work they take on in order to ensure top-notch craftsmanship with each project. “We’re not focused on growth,” says Brad Whicker, the company’s owner. “We don’t strive to go from 6-8 homes to 10-12 to 12-14 and up. We are comfortable with the quantity of the projects we produce because we care about providing the client with a great experience. We do that by limiting our volume of work, so we can concentrate on the end product.” They tackle room additions, master bath remodels, kitchen renovations, exterior enhancements, as well as siding, roofing, and guttering. Even entire house renovations are painless as the team works to minimize disruption to the homeowners’ routines. “We’re all about providing a positive customer experience,” says Whicker. “We promise a quick response, reliable service, and superior product.” Whicker Construction, a staple in the area for the past 30 years, does things a bit differently than some companies. They employ several in-house carpenters who perform a variety of work on homes – everything from minor rough frame carpentry to whole house interior trim, which they do exclusively on all of their homes. “That type of work is being performed by Whicker employees versus a trade contractor that we may or may not have at our disposal,” explains Whicker. “That’s one of a few things that separate us from the rest.” Whicker Construction provides not just high-quality work, but superior products such as Pella supplied by McComb Window & Door. This dedication to craftsmanship hasn’t gone unnoticed, which is why Whicker Construction was selected to participate in the 2019 Home-A-Rama to take place this fall in the Pemberton subdivision in Zionsville. “We are one of five builders who are participating in the Home-A-Rama,” says Whicker, who uses McComb Window & Door, the exclusive supplier of Pella products, at every opportunity. “We utilize their product so much because they are a great company to deal with – sales, services, accounting, every aspect,” says Whicker. “They are one of my most valued vendors because they are a company with a great deal of integrity.” The Whicker team enjoys facilitating the design work of each project, and always engaging in ongoing communication with the buyer, in order to create a beautiful and affordable home. “We work closely with each client to accommodate their lifestyle and construction needs,” says Whicker. RENOVATION & REMODELING

ACo:

How Can You Tell Your Home is Outdated? A HANDY CHECKLIST by Katie Mientka

Trends come and go like the seasons – and sometimes more quickly! When it comes to your home, trends are like guests: welcome, but you don’t want them staying forever. Throw pillows, paintings, linens, curtains… these elements can be easily and relatively inexpensively switched out. 5 2 H AV E N

Core features, like flooring, ceilings, fixtures, appliances, and cabinetry, however, can make your entire space feel dated. Shag carpeting, dark wood paneling, and avocado green appliances are easy. What are some other signs your home could use an update?

Carpet Everywhere. Carpet is a staple in many homes because it offers insulative properties, and can create a warm, cozy atmosphere. However, wall-to-wall carpeting often makes homes feel outdated. To keep your home looking fresh, clean, and timeless, opt for smoother surfaces like hardwood, tile, or LVP and add some color and warmth with area or throw

rugs.

Lackluster Linoleum. Linoleum was a favorite fifteen to twenty years ago. But these floors are not made to last. They can add a dreary, grungy flavor to your home.

Honey-Hued Cabinets. Trendy in the 1980s and 1990s, honey oak and other warm wood cabinets turn your kitchen into a time warp. Sleek lightstained options will stand the test of time, create a light, airy space, and provide a perfect canvas for small updates that will keep your home fresh.

Beige, Anyone? Beige has a solid track record as a go-to neutral. But if your walls and tile have pink, peach, or yellow undertones, it becomes instantly dated. Cooler neutrals like grey are a crisp alternative. If you do like a warm look, there’s always greige — grey with softer brown tones.

Popcorn is for the Movies. Oh, that textured ceiling trend! It’s not coming back. Ever. Replace this lumpy impossible-to-clean surface with gorgeous beams, coffered ceilings, or — if you don’t have the height — a ¼ or ½ inch of sheetrock. Your rooms will instantly look larger, brighter, and cleaner.

Brassy Gold Hardware and Fixtures. Silvers and bronzes are much more contemporary. Unlike popcorn ceilings, though, gold is not going away. Modern gold fixtures are muted, less shiny, less brassy, and more enduring in their appeal.

All White Appliances. It’s hard to keep spotless, makes a kitchen feel

Ornate Railings Intricate, statement-making staircase railings were all the rage in the early aughts. It makes a different statement now: outdated. You cannot go wrong with simple, elegant, and timeless.

Exterior Rendering

HOW HUB & SPOKE WILL BRIDGE THE GAP TO BUILD A BETTER WORKFORCE Indiana’s skilled trades workers are in short supply and high demand. With the economy robust, the need for new building steady, and unemployment low, construction and repair companies are having trouble finding enough skilled laborers to do the work. Enter Hamilton County entrepreneurs David Decker and Travis Tucker and their plan to build the Hub & Spoke Design Center in Fishers – a $15 million, 86,000 square foot complex that will bring back the art and appeal of learning skilled trades.

“OUR GOAL IS TO SHOW PEOPLE THE POSSIBILITIES OF SUCCESS AND GROWTH IN OUR INDUSTRY THROUGH PROJECTAND WORK-BASED LEARNING.”

The heart of the project will be the Community Connect – a magnetic atmosphere of interactive coworking, retail showrooms, and makers leading the way to innovation and a greater good. The space will leverage connection, collaboration, and growth for entrepreneurs, innovators, and students – as well as industry and community members. The Community Connect will have indoor and outdoor space, provide entertainment and recreational activities, and will host community events. The makerspace combines manufacturing equipment, tools, technology, and arts with training and education. Kids, adults, and entrepreneurs are empowered to create, explore, challenge, tinker, discover, and innovate at Hub & Spoke. The makerspace will include an art studio and will offer equipment such as 3-D printers, laser cutters, wood- and metal-working tools, and CNC equipment. The city of Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern schools have partnered with Hub & Spoke to provide an experiential educational journey like no other where the community becomes the classroom. Experts in the plumbing, lighting, homebuilding, real estate, and supply industries (and more) will be on hand to share their knowledge and lend their professional guidance. Ten home-building related businesses will anchor the complex with retail showrooms. Hub & Spoke will encourage community interaction. It will be open to the public to explore, shop, and meet. There will be membership-based access for the makerspace and coworking areas.
