CUSTOM CONCRETE:
The Foundation for Technological Innovation WESTFIELD-BASED CUSTOM CONCRETE IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY by Lauren Littlefield
Technology simplifies our everyday lives, it also makes the business of building homes, offices and other facilities safer and more efficient. For example, the advent of indoor plumbing was a great convenience but a luxury early on. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that a city (Chicago) completed a comprehensive sewer system. At that point, new construction procedures had to be created to correctly install the new plumbing technology. Those processes, in turn, allowed construction projects to more easily incorporate plumbing across the country. Similarly, technology has greatly improved our ability to construct quality foundations for all projects, from singlefamily residences to gigantic warehouses, and everything in between. Centuries ago, foundations were assembled by hand – stone by stone or brick by brick. They often leaked moisture, had to be repaired again and again, or failed completely. Watch any old house renovation show and you’ll likely find a dark, damp cellar with brick or stone walls beneath the living areas of the home or cabin. Today, steel-reinforced foundation walls and footings made of poured 8 H AV E N
concrete are standard for new construction. And, much more than the terrain is taken into consideration before an ounce of concrete is poured. Because a foundation should stand the test of time, it’s critical it remains dry and stable. Using new advances in construction technology, Custom Concrete pours quality, lasting foundations the first time, on every project. It all starts with a plan. Years ago, Custom Concrete received a set of drawings on paper from customers. Today, most drawings are electronic. These digital drawings are quickly converted into a CADD (computeraided design and drafting) system where we can pinpoint corners, coordinates, and determine exact dimensions. This also helps with identifying problem areas before an excavator is ever on site. Custom Concrete uses this CADD data to layout jobs, formerly a task completed with tape measures. Now, advanced measurement instruments allow teams to layout the job much quicker and with more precision.
By combining the two-dimensional drawing and elevations from the jobsite, the CADD software creates a 3D rendering of the project. It helps the Custom Concrete team determine how much material is needed, how much soil needs to be removed from the site, and provides a much better idea of what the finished product will look like. This is particularly helpful on sloped lots with tricky terrains. Custom Concrete also invests in the latest field equipment for everything from excavation, footings and walls, to waterproofing, drainage tile installation,

OUTDOOR LIVING
THE SMART PERGOLA:
No More Cookouts in the Kitchen: The Smart Pergola Invites You to
Dine Outdoors! by Christy Heitger-Ewing
Six years ago, Anna Bertolini distinctly recalls turning to her husband and declaring, “It looks like every time we organize a cookout it rains or it’s too hot and everyone ends up in the kitchen, while we are out there holding an umbrella trying to flip burgers.” She wanted to move the party outside, but they had a traditional pergola that didn’t lend itself well to hosting such cookouts. When she discovered The Smart Pergola, however, everything changed. Customizable in color and size, The Smart Pergola has a remote-controlled roof that opens and closes. Made of powder coated extruded aluminum with stainless steel components, it’s completely maintenance free. One never needs to paint or stain, nor worry about the structure rusting or rotting. Homeowners can angle the louvers to create complete shade yet still have an open roof to provide good airflow, allowing heat to escape. The fan invites in fresh air so even on the hottest days you can enjoy being outdoors. The Bertolinis were such fans of The Smart Pergola that they took over local distributorship five years ago. “Especially in Indiana, when so much of the year you have to spend inside, you want to make the most of being outside,” says Bertolini. “With this pergola, on a cold evening, you can close the louvers, get the fire pit going, and stay warm. If the skies start spitting rain, the rain sensor automatically closes the louvers creating shelter. And you don’t have to wake up to sopping wet cushions.” “We had a patio which we loved but never used because it was either too hot or too wet,” she says. “We can now schedule a cookout or a gathering with friends a month in advance, knowing we can use the area.” Now Bertolini encourages others to demand, “No more cookouts in the kitchen!”

RENOVATION & REMODELING
ACo:
The Remodeling Challenge: TOO MANY CHOICES AND DECISIONS TO MAKE!
2 0 H AV E N
It’s easy to become overwhelmed with remodeling decisions. Although it helps to start at the beginning and envision how you see yourself using the space.
Do you want a clean, contemporary kitchen perfect for hosting an elegant brunch or casual dinner party? Or do you picture an open and welcoming space, with flair and personality, perfect for family dinners or large holiday gatherings? Do you imagine a luxurious, spa-like experience in your master bath? Or a relaxing, eco-friendly retreat that echoes elements from nature? When you are ready for a remodel, the big question is: what can you do to prevent feeling stressed by all the decisions ahead of you? 1 START WITH WHAT INSPIRES YOU. Whether you browse showrooms, click through Pinterest, or flip through design magazines, take some time to really think through what you want. Don’t put pressure on yourself to decide on every facet of your project at this point. Just relax, look at the options available, and discover what speaks to you. To achieve the look you want, it feels like you must make thousands of decisions based on style, function, features, and budget. It can be difficult to balance these and make the right decisions that will bring your vision to reality. 2 THINK BIG PICTURE AT FIRST. Don’t let your favorite paint color guide your decisions! Start with the major elements, such as flooring and cabinetry. Then work your way through lighting, hardware, and color. Big, permanent choices should be made first: they will have the most significant impact on your budget, timeline, and results. Then, as you clarify these in your mind (and in drawings with your designer), you can begin to think about the smaller components. Today’s manufacturers offer a stunning range of options. There is an endless selection of stoves, refrigerators, washers/dryers, floorings, countertops, fixtures, faucets, tubs, showers… and then there are the colors, patterns, and textures. But too much is just too much; it can lead to decision fatigue. When we make too many choices, the quality of our decisions is reduced. We may avoid decisions or make impulsive choices. So how do you best navigate this decision-making process? 3 WORK WITH A PARTNER. Being able to rely on a trusted designer and project manager takes a great deal of the stress out of your project. Before you hire someone, make sure to ask plenty of questions so you understand their process, timeline, and how they will keep on budget. You also want to find a designer who listens to your wants and needs, someone who understands your
vision. Lean on their expertise when making decisions. It’s your home, but their experience can help you see options more clearly and make decisions that you’ll love living with. Home improvement doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. We guide our clients through a simple approach, the ACo Way, which ensures a worry-free kitchen or bath remodel and a home in which you’ll love where you live. Visit us online at liveaco.com to schedule your free in-home design consultation.

“One of the most important elements of our business is understanding our client’s lifestyle. Hilari has an amazing way of doing just that, all the while adding her special touch to the project.” – CORY KROGER CEO & President of Stone Artisans
For over a decade, Cory Kroger, CEO, and President of Stone Artisans has collaborated annually with Hilari Goris, CEO, and owner of Hilari Goris Designs to complete dozens of projects. Both companies work alongside their clients to see them through every detail from the smallest of remodels, to the most ambitious new construction builds. “One of the most important elements of our business is understanding our client’s lifestyle. Hilari has an amazing way of doing just that, all the while adding her special touch to the project. She is thorough and yet efficient,” says Kroger. With her wonderful interior composition & architectural background, Goris helps each client design their project start to finish. Once the plans are drawn, Goris meets with the client, Kroger, and his team to discuss the material selections and layouts. “Successfully working on any project takes a skilled team. No single person sees a job through completion. That is why having trust in my vendors is so valuable. Stone Artisans and I have created a partnership over time. I trust that my job and client are both in good hands,” says Goris. It is beyond important to Goris that Kroger is also personally on every project. She continues, “He and the Stone Artisan team work through every detail to ensure the final touches of my design are executed. Stone Artisans truly has a passion for what they do which shows in their work and how they treat all their clients.” Whether you want an elegant kitchen in your new custom home or a simple redesign of your fireplace, you need a trusted team who works smoothly and efficiently. WINDOWS & DOORS
FRANKLIN WINDOW & DOOR:
Folding Patio Doors Provide Breathtaking View for Chatham Clubhouse Patrons by Christy Heitger-Ewing
When the Club at Chatham Hills in Westfield was under construction, Betsy Henke Garfield with Henke Development Group, LLC, reached out to Scott Brown, COO and New Construction Specialist at Franklin Window & Door, to ask for guidance. “They were using a different manufacturer for all of the windows in the building, but they wanted the best doors they could get for the application there [at the clubhouse],” says Brown. “I leaned her towards Marvin Products and then we went out to the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas to let her get a feel for the functionality of the Marvin Folding Scenic Doors.” Henke Garfield was sold, and it’s no surprise why. Folding scenic doors have panels that fold open and closed like an accordion, 2 4 H AV E N
thereby inviting the outdoors in. They come in various widths, heights, and configurations and are made with contemporary hardware that is stylish and sleek. Plus, the operation of the doors is seamless and smooth as they’ve got an integrated handle system in their folding that’s different from the typical folding door. “Most [systems] have visible slide bolts on the top and bottom that you have to operate separately, but Marvin integrated it into their handle. So, you just turn the handle and it functions,” says Brown. “The bolts are hidden within the door.” Folding scenic doors are ideal for home or business owners who want to blend the comfort of indoor living with the tranquility of breathing in nature. Such is the case at the Chatham Clubhouse, which not only boasts a huge patio, pool, and luxurious outdoor bar
“The full windows and doors are just a beautiful setting for the rear of the clubhouse that shows the incredible views across the valley and hillside, even when they’re closed.” – BETSY HENKE GARFIELD Henke Development Group
but also offers a serene setting that overlooks the golf course and all of the amenities, enabling patrons to relax indoors yet still feel as if they are a part of everything that’s going on outside. “These Marvin Folding Scenic Doors take an 8,000 sq. ft. space and make it feel like a 50,000 sq. ft. space,” says Brown. Henke Garfield says that the doors have been a lovely and unique attribute to have in the Clubhouse. “Not only do they allow us to have full panoramic views across the rear of the building overlooking the valley, but on nice days throughout the spring, summer and even into the fall, we open them up and members can go to and from the back patio. It makes everything feel nice and open,” says Henke Garfield. “The full windows and doors are just a beautiful setting for the rear of the clubhouse that shows the incredible views across the valley and hillside, even when they’re closed.” Create your own panoramic views with Marvin Folding Doors. RE/MAX AT THE CROSSING:
NEW CONSTRUCTION
vs.
BUYING AN EXISTING HOME Which is Right for You? by Matt Keating
2 6 H AV E N
When you are ready to find a new home, evaluating the benefits of either new construction or buying an existing home is a good place to start according to Phil Hotle, a Realtor with Re/Max at the Crossing. “When you build a new home, you get a fresh start,” Hotle says. “You get all of the modern fixtures and finishes and can really personalize the details. You shouldn’t have to worry about any major repairs for a while. Another great feature about newer homes is they have energy efficient materials.” However, a major setback to building a customized new home is not being able to move in right away. “You also may not have a lot of room for negotiation later, upgrades and change orders can be costly. Then when you finally move in, you may have to deal with construction noise from other new homes and additional traffic,” Hotle says. There are many benefits to moving into an

Features such as trees, landscape and established neighborhoods all drive homebuyers to purchased existing homes. A possible setback might be that you may not get the exact layout you want. “You may also face more house maintenance issues,” Hotle says. Existing homes may have maintenance issues pop up more often that put a strain on your pocketbook. LARRY GOOD HOMES has stuck to the client-focused process Brian’s father and grandfather originally created. They build quality homes which are one-of-a-kind, and suited to each family who calls it home.

In a world of venture capitalists and fast paced business growth, there’s something very special about a family operated business, especially one that has blossomed with their original founding principles. Larry Good Homes is such a company and was built on a foundation meant to last. Brian Good is a thirdgeneration owner and is now company President. Over the years, Brian has worked alongside his father and carried on his process and traditions, including vendor and subcontractor partnerships. Beaming with pride,
Good explained, “At an initial client meeting, I always let the client know my father left me with an incredible ‘blueprint’ for the business and I, to this day, follow his ways!” Larry Good Homes will complete custom homes on farms, scatter lots, and in approved custom neighborhoods throughout the central Indiana area. “We can work with floor plans a client brings to the table or have our team of draftsmen create one-of-a-kind custom floor plans. The client is our highest priority and

we make sure our team and subcontractors deliver the very best service,” explained Good. Edits and adjustments to each plan are carefully considered by the Good team of draftsmen, ultimately giving each client their individual vision for their homes. Not only does the in-house team at Larry Good Homes give undivided attention to their clients, the same goes for their industry partners. For over 20 years, Larry Good Homes has trusted and contracted McComb Pella Window and Door for nearly all their window and door needs. “Not only do they have great products, their customer service is even better. They are wonderful people to work with,” said Good. How does McComb Pella mold with the Larry Good Homes building process? Greg Hintz from McComb Pella Window and Door meets with each client to help them design and make those important exterior and interior selections. “It makes the process seamless for our team, but our client also gets undivided attention, service, and no detail is spared with Greg. It truly makes our lives so much easier,” explained Good. Window style and color preference will vary with each new build and client, but as Good shared, “We have seen many earthy tones in clad windows, such as almond, but black has become a top choice lately! It’s so thrilling seeing each home come to fruition as the client had imagined. A major sense of pride is involved for all parties when the homeowners can move into their new home and enjoy it for many years to come!” As a premier custom builder, Larry Good Homes has stuck to the client-focused process Brian’s father and grandfather originally created. They build quality homes which are one-of-a-kind, and suited to each family who calls it home. hen Bernie Lacy was looking to renovate the exterior of his downtown property, he knew just who to call – Ryan Coyle, Founder & President of Vive Exterior Designs. “I contacted Ryan because I was looking to hire a great and honest landscaper,” says Lacy. “I appreciated the quality of his design and the speed of execution. Plus, his quote included a lot of materials, so we got a lot of bang for our buck.” The moment Coyle saw Lacy’s property – a former textiles manufacturing building that had been converted into three homes – the wheels started spinning in Coyle’s mind for what he could do to transform the backyard and patio area. The owner wanted to preserve the integrity and elegance of the building while updating and refreshing the antiquated space. “It was a big transformation because the existing pool and patio were dated and not very usable. Think of an 80’s swimming pool made of regular concrete with a red brick border,” says Coyle. After asking Lacy, a business owner who regularly entertains clients, family, and friends, how he envisioned using the space, Coyle suggested adding a firepit, fountains, and an inviting bar/grill area. They also installed a low-maintenance synthetic turf green space and selected natural Oakville stone paving versus concrete paving. Another cool feature is the big brick wall that surrounds the property. “The original walls that surrounded the property lacked elegance, so we did a stucco finish with natural stone on all of the walls as well as the bar area. We also wanted to do custom metal work along that extended above the tall stucco wall,” explains Coyle. “It’s a metal mesh. We’ve tied that black metal throughout which will eventually be covered with vines over the next several years, giving them a green wall.” VIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN transformed this downtown Indianapolis property – a former textiles manufacturing building – into an outdoor sanctuary, while preserving the integrity and elegance of the historic building.

To provide additional privacy, Coyle planted tall evergreens around much of the perimeter, which served to soften the space as well. “Our whole goal was to take a downtown property and not make it feel like you’re downtown,” At the same time, the owner wished to highlight the lovely skyline views, especially at night, so Coyle installed lighting around the pool and firepit. Coyle was delighted that the client trusted him to approach the exterior design in a unique and unconventional way. “He wanted elegance, privacy, low maintenance, and specific materials, but other than that he allowed us to design free will with no boundaries,” says Coyle, who takes pride in being one of the more creative designers in town. VIVE EXTERIOR DESIGN founder and president, Ryan Coyle, was delighted that the client trusted him to approach the exterior design in a unique and unconventional way. “He wanted elegance, privacy, low maintenance, and specific materials, but other than that he allowed us to design free will with no boundaries.”

A SPACE TO ENTERTAIN Owner, Bernie Lacy, regularly entertains his business clients, family, and friends. The outdoor kitchen and firepit are among his favorite features of the renovation.
“That’s where we approach our design. We think outside the box,” explains Coyle, who shies away from doing things in the same way everyone else does. “You’ll see that approach in this design by way of the synthetic turf we did that throughout the natural stone. You’ll see that in the use of metal work with climb in it to break up a large stucco wall. And you’ll see it in the water features coming out of a stone wall with lights behind it into the new pool area.” Coyle’s unique designs are no doubt why Vive Exterior Design has earned numerous accolades and awards, including winning first place in the Indiana Nursery & Landscape Association’s (INLA) 2018 Hardscape Residential Landscape Design/Build Over $50,000 Award of Excellence for their work on this private residence in Indianapolis. According to the INLA, the Awards of Excellence recognize those firms that have enhanced the Indiana environment with creativity and beauty through landscaping and horticulture. “That was a cool award to win because we don’t want to design to the norm,” says Coyle. “Everybody can browse Pinterest or vendor magazines for ideas and say, ‘I like this wall.’ We like to tell clients, ‘Well, that’s great, but maybe there’s a better way to do this.’ We come at things from a different angle.” Coyle, who has 20 years of experience in the landscape industry, is proud that his team tackles projects of every kind, including government and education, residential, medical complexes, parks & recreation, industrial and commercial properties, and golf courses. They all relish diving into new, innovative design prospects. As for Lacy, he’s thrilled to utilize his favorite feature – the outdoor kitchen and firepit. “We’ve gotten a lot of use out of those things,” says Lacy. “It’s been great.” When it’s time to step outside of the box and create an outdoor space unlike any other, call Vive Exterior Design. HOME ORGANIZATION
THE BAER MINIMALIST:
A Kick-Start Guide to Being an
Organized Parent by Maria Baer / Photos by Melissa Mattingly
When we found out we were expecting, I knew my organizational skills would be put to the true test. When twins showed up on the ultrasound…well, let’s just say game on. So what’s a Type-A gal to do? It may come as no surprise, that a list of goals and to’dos was crafted to help keep focus during the upcoming months. Some items were things I’d been meaning to do for years (like getting up to date on our annual photo books), while others came with the territory.
Here are FIVE EASY THINGS to do in advance of bringing your bundle of joy home that I promise you won’t regret: 1. Create Pinterest boards to help organize resources for now and later (mine are broken down by Infant, 6-12 Months and 1 Year+), gifts + goodies, and my favorite, baby style. 2. Create file folders and memory boxes for your child (related to health, special mementos and one for everything else) so that you can begin organizing items as you receive them. This ensures you have a good system put into place before the onslaught of paperwork arrives post-birth. 3. As you set-up all of your toys and gadgets, tape the manuals to the bottom so you have them handy as you test them out with your new baby. 4. Put together changing stations around the house. This can be as simple as a basket of essentials like diapers, wipes, diaper cream, changing mat and a swaddle blanket. 5. Finally, this is the one time I’ll push stocking up on household essentials. Look into Amazon Subscribe & Save, but don’t forget to alter your frequency over time so you don’t end up with a surplus of stuff. Since you likely won’t have the luxury of those daily trips to the store, it is nice to have these items handy for the first few months.
If you need a little assistance prepping for baby (or just getting organized in general), contact The Baer Minimalist at 317-294-8409. For organization tips and inspiration, follow @thebaerminimalist on Instagram and Facebook.

KITCHEN ORGANIZATION
ACo:
LOVE THE LOOK
Open Shelving in Kitchens
3 6 H AV E N
Raise your hand if you’ve had this happen: it’s Thanksgiving, the Super Bowl, your annual family reunion, and instead of gathering at your dining room table or around the flat-screen in your living room, everyone’s in the kitchen. For many, this is the heart of the home. But along with the hustle and bustle, is there also clutter and chaos? A little kitchen organization is in order – and open shelving can be the solution for a more spacious feel. THE BEAUTY – AND PRACTICALITY – OF OPEN SHELVING IN KITCHENS Kitchen organization can be challenging. These rooms are natural clutter-collectors. Who else has a hundred plastic containers, some with lids, some without? And lids without containers? We tend to wash, throw them into the cabinet, and hope the next time we open the door, they don’t avalanche out. It’s like a closet: too easy to let mess accrue because it can be out of sight, out of mind. Open shelving helps you stay organized: you can’t hide your dirty little tupperware secret! You can also more readily see what you need and don’t need, allowing you to throw out or donate unused items. WHAT OTHER BENEFITS DO OPEN SHELVES PROVIDE? • They maximize storage options. There are some nooks and crannies into which you’re just not going to get a usable cabinet (e.g. corners). Open shelves are a perfect fit for virtually any space. They open up more storage options for your cookware, food items, and decor elements. • Open shelves are convenient. Whether you’re whipping up a feast, searching your grandmother’s cookbook for a recipe, or packing the children’s lunch, the items you need are visible and easily accessible. You don’t have to hunt through cabinets. You reach, grab, and go. Guests can also help themselves - and help you clean up! They can see where everything belongs. • They’re cost effective. Cabinetry is a major investment. If you are building or remodeling, open shelving allows you to use your budget in other areas. • Clean up is easier. Again, because cabinet doors hide a multitude of sins, dust builds up. With open shelving, you give them a swipe once in a while, and you’re done. • They look great! Ah, the best reason to love open kitchen shelves! You can use a combination of open shelving and cabinets to achieve the look and functionality you want.
With great kitchen organization and open shelves, you’ll have all the more reason to love where you live. Visit us online at liveaco.com to schedule your free in-home consultation and ask the ACo team about open shelving for your kitchen.
OPEN SHELVING looks great, is cost effective, and helps keep your kitchen organized. It also allows you to more readily see what you have, what you need and what you don’t need. Time to get organized and love where you live!

LIGHTING
BURTNER ELECTRIC:
LIGHT UP A DARK SPACE with LED & Tape Lights
by Matt Keating
There are many unique ways for homeowners to creatively use cool LED or tape lights to help brighten up dark rooms or enhance a living room or family gathering space. Putting LED strip lighting under your den or living room furniture can showcase your living space, and make your room look much brighter. By using different LED color lights, you add a fun atmosphere to any party or gathering. Having LED lights under cabinets gives additional task lighting in a dark workspace, such as a garage or studio. White LED lights are effective lighting on bathroom mirrors or for illuminating the dark back of a bedroom drawer. LED tape lighting is another high-quality option. They are a smart choice to save money and light up unique spaces such as a display cabinet of your favorite collectibles. If you have a basement bar, LED tape lighting behind the shelves is a creative way to showcase your favorite spirits and bar glasses. The usefulness of LED lights doesn’t end indoors, waterproof tape lighting can also be used in the pool. Staircases, refrigerators, patios, and outdoor bars are a few other great places for tape lighting to illuminate your home. Burtner Electric has been serving the community since 1986 and they are the experts in the electrical and lighting industry. They can help update your home’s lighting plan! KITCHEN CABINET TRENDS
G&G CUSTOM HOMES:
NEW TRENDS
& FUN FEATURES
in Kitchen Cabinets by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Sara Crawford
In the world of home design, there is a constant stream of new features and trends in custom kitchen cabinetry. According to Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes, homeowners still crave many of the same elements they always have but are also eager to implement new, exciting features. For instance, texture layering has become very popular. “People want to get away from everything being wood, so we invite in different textures such as a metal hood with wood strips on top,” says Julie King, designer with the Indiana Kitchen Company. Mixing paints and stains is another 4 4 H AV E N
design trend that has gained traction. “Homeowners want a bright, light kitchen, but they add depth and grit to a space so it’s not all white,” explains King. People are also adding punches of color to islands. King is seeing lots of blues and greens rather than blacks and stains. Thick countertops and apron front sinks are also in vogue. Though people have tired of dated tambour slide-up appliance garages, they love the sleek new ones that hide charging cords, cookbooks, and stacks of mail. Coffee bars and built-in coffeemakers that have direct plumbing running into the cabinets are also hugely popular.
In addition, homeowners are choosing to forego a bit of storage space in the name of style. “We want the kitchen to be beautiful and functional, but sometimes that beauty requires us to false out a space at the top of the cabinet to do a decorative light or panel,” says King. When it comes to designing the perfect kitchen, finding the right trendy details and the perfect modern storage solutions makes all the difference. Start a conversation with the team at G&G Custom Homes for help designing a kitchen (and home) that is built for living.

“The truth of the matter is most routers are already at their maximum strength that the FCC will allow. You don’t need a router with 20 antennas on it. What you need is multiple broadcast points.” – NATHAN ROBISON Lead designer, Digital Sight & Sound

DIGITAL SIGHT & SOUND:
The Best Way to
BOOST Your Wi-Fi by Christy Heitger-Ewing
A high quality, high performance WiFi Network is the backbone of technology in a modern home. We all know what happens when the internet goes out and we lose that important connection – we are cut off from the world. Television, music, communication, security systems, our home office, and the kids’ homework progress all come to a screeching halt. Nathan Robison, formerly with Robison A/V and now lead designer with Digital Sight & Sound, said “I remember when it was a novelty to sit in my kitchen and check email, and then that became a useful convenience, and now it’s required. I work from home some days, and I absolutely positively must have a good connection.” There are many quality providers delivering high-speed internet to your home, but the services they provide inside your home are somewhat lacking. “The service is fast and reliable but the distribution via WiFi (wireless connection) lacks consistent broadcast strength to adequately serve larger custom homes. To avoid areas of diminished speed or coverage, homes over 5,000 square feet require multiple WiFi access points.” NEED MORE RELIABLE WI-FI? Consider not just the size, but the shape of your home. Take inventory of any architectural limitations that could impede your signal, or prohibit additional access points.
said Ray Rice of Digital Sight & Sound. Each access point has a limit to the number of active connections it can serve. Think of it this way, if you are walking through a door by yourself, you go through quickly. If you and 10 others are walking through that same door, at exactly the same moment, some will have to wait, and that congestion will slow you down. “There are also weatherproof outdoor access points for coverage in backyards and outdoor living areas. Getting all of these access points to seamlessly stick together is where we can help,” said Rice. Our devices keep us connected in this modern online world and are an integral part of our lifestyle, so a reliable WiFi internet connection is a must-have. Call Digital Sight & Sound if you need to improve your home’s WiFi access.

DRAPERY STREET:
Window Treatment Automation vs. Motorization: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? 5 0 H AV E N
Hunter Douglas Parkland® Wood Blinds with PowerView® Motorization
When referring to power blinds and shades, automated and motorized are often used interchangeably. But these two terms actually have specific meanings and indicate different capabilities. It’s important to understand the differences so you are sure to get the features you want. MOTORIZED WINDOW TREATMENTS
button, consider motorizing your treatments. This is an especially great option if you have hard to reach windows. An important point to note is that automation is only as good as your Wi-Fi. If you have a weak Wi-Fi signal in your home, you may want to opt for motorized treatments instead.
With motorized window treatments, the blinds or shades operate using a motor. The motor can be battery-operated or hard-wired. The treatments are operated using a remote control or a button on the shade itself. AUTOMATED WINDOW TREATMENTS Automated window treatments also have motors, but they are connected to a smart hub. This hub is connected to your home’s Wi-Fi router and communicates with your powered window treatments. The hub connection allows you to operate your window treatments with your smartphone, tablet, integrate it your smart home system such as Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Nest. There is an impressive array of options for programming your automated window treatments to operate under specified conditions. For example, you can set them to automatically open and close with sunrise and sunset. Or your shades can be programmed to automatically lower when bright sun hits the windows to control glare and UV rays. When you are traveling, scheduling automated blinds to open and close at different times of the day gives the appearance that someone is home. Blinds can also be programmed to adjust when your smart thermostat senses you are away to maximize energy efficiency. MOTORIZED OR AUTOMATED: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME? If you love smart home technology and already have or are planning to get a smart home system, automated window treatments are a no-brainer. They will give you much more control with less effort. The addition of the hub provides much more functionality without a lot of additional costs. GEOMETRIC FUSION (above) features a blend of metallic, matte, and glossy finishes all in one. MEMOIR (far left) has a look of an encaustic concrete and comes in two patterns and two colors. One pattern is more geometric while the other is more of a traditional floral. EMERSON WOOD CUBE (left) wood plank tiles feature a modern geometric pattern with a wire brushed look.
“Oftentimes when people think of fireplaces, they think, ‘I’ve got to do marble tile or split face,’” says Robin Bradford, Showroom Designer with Daltile. “Not true. There are other ways of thinking about what you can put around your fireplace.” For instance, there is Geometric Fusion, which is an 8x8 tile that comes in four colors and features a blend of metallic, matte, and glossy finishes all in one. With a mix of nine different patterns, it’s designed to be installed completely at random for an intentionally deconstructed look. Another option, the Ambassador Random Strips, Bradford calls, “a porcelain answer to the split face that’s so popular on fireplaces now.” A modern look, it has a monodirectional grain to it with just a subtle sparkle and is available in four colors. There’s also a 12x12 ceramic tile called Memoir that has a look of an encaustic concrete and comes in two patterns and two colors. One pattern is more geometric while the other is more of a traditional floral. “It adds an historic touch to a fireplace surround,” explains Bradford, who also mentions Emerson Wood, wood plank tiles that have a modern cube option with a wire brushed look. “It's a wood look done in a geometric pattern with a mesh backing,” says Bradford. HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:
10 years of
Doing Heating & Cooling Differently In August, Homesense celebrated 10 years of business. With data showing two-thirds of businesses fail by year ten, this is something to celebrate in general, but the Homesense story gives central Indiana homeowners even more to celebrate. “We were different from the start, because we were homeowners, not technicians,” said co-founder Brian Schutt. “Our approach was to build a company based on timeless values, hire people we would want in our own homes, and build processes that supported our integrity promise that we believed would lead to long term client relationships.” The same motivation that led Schutt and co-founder Jesse Cross to open Homesense in August of 2009, is still the guiding principle for their team today. “While many in our industry chase daily revenue quotas as their key performance indicators, the metric that we focus on is our customer surveys,” said Cross. Their focus on customer happiness is what they believe has driven growth in a very fragmented industry. “I think homeowners can tell when someone is putting on an act,” Schutt commented. “We hire people that truly want to deliver an unmatched and refreshingly different customer experience, which has paid off with repeat customers who talk about Homesense to their friends and family.” Another key difference is how they take care of their team. “We believe that healthy and balanced team members deliver a better experience for customers,” stated Schutt. “We are intentionally not 24-7 because our team needs time with family and rest.” The most exciting new benefit they have added is an extended paid vacation for team members that reach certain milestones at Homesense. “We have a few technicians that are close to reaching the 5-year mark, which will earn them a 5-week paid sabbatical,” said Cross. If Homesense sounds like a business you’d like to have solve your heating and cooling issues, visit them online at trusthomesense.com or call 317-670-0171 for a free estimate.
