In this case, the family wanted to stay in their neighborhood and in their apartment - and they also wanted to transform the space to better work for their needs. They turned to Houseplay Renovations, a design/build firm based in Montclair NJ, for support.

OUT-OF-THE-BOX DINING Creating the semiprivate den led to the second design challenge: where to put the lost dining table?
TRIPLE-DUTY SPACE The first challenge was to transform the existing dining room into a semiprivate den that could do triple duty as a hangout area, a home office space and a place for out-of-town guests to crash. To accomplish this, the Houseplay Renovations team built and installed a stationary L-shaped wooden screen to clearly define the space and provide some privacy. Houseplay finished off this new living area with custom built-ins with lots of storage and a custom sofa desk for work-from-home comfort. (Oddly prescient, as this was well before Covid lockdown!)

In an innovative use of space, Houseplay transformed a storage closet into a dining nook off the kitchen. A new butcher block dining table was attached to the wall with custom benches (concealing more storage in the seats) fitted on either side.
