Fall Trends with

JOHN MCCLAIN

John McClain is an accomplished interior designer, speaker, writer, and on-air contributor who has turned his lifetime passion for interior design into an opportunity to do the same for others. We heard from him about his start in the industry, design trends for the fall season, and more! How did you get your start in interior design? As a child growing up, my family was a group of home builders. I would always tag long on jobsites and became so intrigued by the process. Fast forward to my teenage years when I started to re-design areas of my childhood home, anything from rearranging the furniture while my parents were out shopping, to a complete renovation of my bedroom including adding on a bathroom! I also was very active in providing free design services to my friends and family (whether they wanted it or not) and bought my first home at 21– an 1886 Colonial that needed remodeling. I knew this was my calling in life, but I wasn’t sure that someone could actually make a living doing something that, to some, seemed frivolous. My big “aha” moment came when I was cast on an HGTV show, “First Time Design,” in 2009. After the show began to air, I began receiving calls from all over the country, and just like that, my design career changed from a hobby to a profession. I jumped in head-first, started working on paid projects (what a novelty!) and even went back to college for a

proper interior design education (my first degree is in the practical, but not so fun, Business Management). As I started my own little design business in Florida, I met some amazing designers from a firm in LA. Soon thereafter, I was hired to work with them and began an amazing and educating adventure designing furniture and celebrity homes in Los Angeles. My passion for design has always been a constant in my mind, but I wasn’t ready to take the plunge until all signs pointed to it. My design career is actually a second career for me, not having started until I was 32. Let me tell you, I wouldn’t change a thing about the path because I learned from each part and applied all of that knowledge to my current flourishing business that includes an busy office in Florida and another in Los Angeles. As the weather gets a little cooler, what are some ways that homeowners can update their interior or outdoor living space? Once the cool weather hits we all crave a little comfort. What better way to add comfort (besides food) than with the addition of texture? Faux fur throw blankets pair seamlessly with knit toss pillows. Swap or top your summer sisal rug with hide rug or a deep woolen shag. Shearling has been having a moment in interior design. Reupholster your favorite chair to continue the trend and sink into lamby goodness. Add candles, house plants and other natural elements to remind you of the warmth that always returns. Do you have any predictions for design trends that’ll become more popular in the Fall? As people spend more and more time in their homes, a minimalistic malaise has been developing. Folks are craving warm color, interest (and a cool Zoom background). As we all settle into our new normal, consider adding art, colorful accessories, and moments of visual interest to keep the eye moving and attention peaked. I predict more people are now willing to take risks too. If this current world situation has taught us anything, it is that things can change quickly. I think more homeowners will finally embrace


that fun patterned wallpaper or order that blue sofa. Risk can be rewarding, and I see more and more homeowners being open to that vulnerability. What color palette would you recommend for someone looking to revamp their home in the upcoming season? For fool proof color combinations that explode with excitement, pair a warm color next to a cool one. Love the Autumnal reds, rusts, and oxblood? Pair them with a cool denim, navy, or a warm toned teal. Appreciate pops or gold, copper, or brass? They partner spectacularly well with emerald, olive and aubergine. Juxtaposition is the name of the game when it comes to visual interest. Be bold, be fearless and experiment with the colors that speak to you. Some of our go-to colors are from Sherwin Williams: Alabaster for a serene neutral background. Naval for that perfect rich deep blue, and throw in RoseMary or Java for a fun color snap! Is there a recent project you worked on or an upcoming project that you’re really excited about? We have around 10 new projects in the works currently, but the most exciting and challenging is my own new home that I will be closing on in the next month! I am about to embark again on the design of my own home, and it’s something like I’ve never designed for myself: a new multi-level builder home that desperately needs my personal touch. I am the worst client in the world, so I utilize my talented team to assist. My current smaller home is a colorful, curated blend of eclecticism and has actually landed us in the 2020 competition for HGTV Designer of the Year in the Color and Pattern category. We won this category last year and hope to take home the trophy again. (Go online to HGTV and vote for us!) The beauty of what my firm always accomplishes with our designs is an underlying elegance. This is our signature, no matter what design genre our clients are interested in. We love being well-rounded with our designs and being open to new challenges. This is what keeps things fresh and exciting. All these years later, I still pinch myself that I can create beautiful and functional homes for a living. What a life!
