What is your inspiration behind the design for Forté? The design was inspired by the discovery of America, by a mix of culture, history, beauty and nature. It fuses the seaside experience in Palm Beach with a more European sensitivity. Every shape and finish was inspired by the natural elements and is in tune with everyday moments and the everyday backdrop. What are the key trends happening now that you expect to persist over the next 10 years and have a large impact on Miami, specifically? How does the design of Forté differ from other luxury buildings in Palm Beach County? I find that my understanding of region sets Forté apart from the already existing designs within the Palm Beaches; I created a recipe that suits the area, and I was directly inspired by all its existing and natural components, yet I hoped to make it a more abstract translation. I designed Forté as though it was a private home, so that the space is entirely flexible and adaptable, to be made your own. I wanted to create a new story, as though you are walking onto an estate, you push the door and form your own adventure; it is playful, personal, historical, captivating, fun, lucky, elegant – there really is something for everyone. I know that people will understand that and will love it. How has the design process for Forté been different or similar to some of your other projects? My work differs greatly project to project as my work is client and site-oriented – the only commonality between projects is that I am trying to create a story in each case. With Forté, I drew on elements of the Palm Beach surrounds, its character, the location of the tower, and the beauty of nature; I translated all these qualities in an abstract sense, so that there is this instantaneous Palm Beach vibe as soon as people enter the building. All interior layouts, shapes and aesthetics were inspired by the soap-like curves of the building. A narrative is formed in that from the building the function is defined, from the function the shapes are defined, and from the shapes the aesthetic is formed. The building influenced my design, creating soft body-like curves as though patinated
culture
through erosion from the waves, creating adobe-like shapes that add to the instant vacation feel. The layout was based on a very formal, academic layout, with the circulation as it should be, however I juxtaposed this layout with a very fluid and loose aesthetic. People will therefore find that the structure is highly pragmatic –withstanding the test of timeyet there is also this fresh and energetic aesthetic that we wish for today. Which upcoming design trends do you expect to be popular this Spring? I find that design trends are more and more about individuality and personalization; that there is this motivation towards independent thought and actions and that designs will reflect this motivation more and more. What are some notable design components of Forté? There is this wonderful sense of grounded-ness within the design of Forté; it encourages this sensation of sitting on the sand and staring at these very loose, flowing, abstract surrounds. With Forté there is not a single straight line and not one parallel wall, which is a strong negation away from the 20th century white cube aesthetic. Instead I wanted the idea of waves, sand dunes and nature in general to be evoked through my design.

There is also a great sense of individuality and privacy within the designs as there are many nooks and crannies to be made your own; I ensured that each person is considered in their own preferred space, encouraging each individual – as well as groups – to be an enactor rather than a spectator of their own vacation. For someone whose work spans a global scale, how has your previous work informed the new projects that you take on? Each past project has encouraged growth, each has given me more aesthetic confidence, as well as confidence in general, in myself, my crew, my clients and further afield. With Forté, everyone involved has a very special charisma, passion and a dedicated approach to the project. I had an extreme sense of freedom and trust within this project; I aim to deliver this same sense of trust, care, confidence and freedom through my design
