2021 WINTER TRENDS WITH

INTERIOR DESIGNER JOHN MCCLAIN

From chic home offices to proper zoom backgrounds, Interior Designer John McClain of John McClain Design predicts that these will be the hottest design trends for 2021. See below!

1. What are some tips for someone who’s looking to switch up their space this Winter?

and a bed that gives you a big hug every time you climb in.

In the cold days of winter, there are many changes you can make to your home to bring warmth and comfort. Simple additions such as faux fur throws, fuzzy pillows, and thick plush area rugs are perfect for a tactile yet cozy feel. I usually like to keep several extra throws for my sofas and chairs in my closet. This allows me to switch them out per season or anytime I want!

2. What kind of design requests do you often see from clients?

Next, if your home already has a lot of color in your design, consider bringing in neutral accessories to offset the impactful colors. Patterns are also another way to bring in a feeling of warmth and interest. An easy mix of fabrics is achieved by blending large scale patterns with small scale patterns on your pillows to create interest. Possibly consider your furniture arrangement this winter as well. For instance, if you are fortunate enough to have a fireplace, reorient your furniture placement to make the fireplace a focal point. Add some oversized floor pillows safely near the fireplace for those who want to cozy right up to it. I particularly love Japanese style Tatami woven floor cushions to place near the fireplace for floor seating. I also recommend changing out artwork during the winter months. Chances are those beach images don’t conjure up a winter feel, so consider swapping them out for a wintery photographic piece of art or anything that says wintertime to you. In your bedroom: layer, layer, layer. Replace your thin bedding cover with two to three layers of beautiful quilts, comforters, and blankets. By layering these luscious materials, you instantly have a gorgeous room

Clients are typically trying to figure out how to best achieve a great furniture plan for the winter months. This request is usually because family and friends will be visiting a lot during the holidays. Sometimes, it is as simple as creating a better traffic path for anyone walking through the spaces. Other times, I recommend actually removing pieces of furniture during the busy holiday season so that rooms do not get overcrowded. Extra seating is also important during the busy entertaining winter months. I ask my clients to invest in nice folding chairs. Gone are the days when you have to bring out the pop-up chair from the football game for your guests to use. It’s time to invest in beautiful wooden fold-up chairs with padded seating. Some chairs are so lovely that you cannot even tell the difference from a temporary chair and a permanent chair. Mission accomplished! 3. Aside from decor, are there other changes that people are seeking in their homes? Our biggest request right now, of course, is for home offices. Clients are adapting to working from home and are wanting a more comfortable and functional workspace. Gone are the days when you hunker down at a kitchen table. If you are truly working from home, you need a proper desk, chair, lighting, and if possible, storage. The task of creating a work-from-home space is easier when there is one person involved, but many families have two people working from home so many more things have to be considered. An easy way to achieve a desk for two people is a partner’s desk. This allows each person to work simultaneously, but the downside is there is little privacy. I have encouraged clients to consider what they really liked about their former workplace corporate office. Answers range from an abundance of storage, a large desktop area to spread things out, or even something as simple as an ergonomic chair. We are really focusing on finding out exactly what the client’s needs are in their home office and addressing those for each client personally. I also encourage clients to reconsider all of the lighting in their homes, not only during the

winter months, but all year long. The proper color temperature for lighting can change the entire feeling of our room. This color temperature also affects the color of other things that you have in your space, even the wall color. As a firm, we always redesign lighting plans based on the furnishings that we place in the room. For instance,

Q &A

if your space is light and bright with a predominantly white color palette, I recommend cooler temperature lighting sources. However, if your space is full of saturated colors and warm hues, I suggest warmer lighting that casts a golden glow. In the winter, the days are short, and darkness comes faster in the evenings, so make sure you have adequate lighting for reading, cooking, or whatever you might be doing in your home after dark. 4. What do you predict to be the most popular trend of 2021? Proper Zoom backgrounds! These days, everyone has become all too familiar with the word “Zoom.” Backgrounds were once an afterthought as none of us really participated in very many video calls. Now, after the pandemic, everyone has at least one, possibly multiple, video calls during the week. We have received requests from clients to update their backgrounds specifically for their video calls. I predict a “Zoom Room”, so to speak, will be a big trend in 2021. We like to add items such as wallpaper, plants, art, and proper accessories. The key to a good Zoom background is to not install anything that overpowers the conversation that you are having, but still is interesting to the eye. I also instruct clients to have proper lighting facing them for their call (not overhead only). Especially if you are in a professional setting, your appearance and the appearance of your background is vital-so put your best foot forward. 5. What should be a staple in every household? Every household should have several small cocktail tables that can easily be moved around the spaces as needed. These tables range in size from 8 inches to 12 inches and diameter and can be placed beside a chair, sofa, or anywhere you need an extra spot to set your drink or food. These little tables are like piece of jewelry in a room and are made of materials from marble to brass-and everything in between. The best part? More and more companies are making them so the price points can be very affordable. If you don’t need them out all the time, they fit perfectly into a small closet just waiting on their moment to shine! The bottom line: look around your house and if something feels stale or out of place for Winter, just make some swaps. Little changes can really freshen up your home and only take a few minutes. Then, when spring rolls around, all of the items you put away for winter decorating will feel new again when you bring them back!

CO N N E C T YO U R Interior Design with Better Sleep

Interior design sets the tone, mood, and ambiance of a room. And, there’s no room where that’s more important than one with such a specific purpose as the bedroom. The quality and length of your sleep cycle can be heavily influenced by everything from the light location and levels to the wall color and artwork. Sleep success has psychological roots that interior design can either help or hinder. Making that connection between design and purpose can help you get the full seven to nine hours of sleep you need every night. And we’ve got some tips to help.

SLEEP-ENHANCING COLOR PALETTE

Cool neutrals—the grays, whites, and pastel blues and greens—don’t overstimulate the eyes and calm the mind and body. They’re a favorite in the bedroom because of their psychological impact.

ONBOARD NATURE The barrier between the natural world and living spaces continues to thin. Time spent in nature reduces stress and anxiety, which nature-inspired design can also do. There are obvious choices like artwork that directly depicts nature in the form of landscapes, photographs, and sculptures. But, nature can enter the room through more creative and subtle means as well. Lamps, rugs, pillows with floral motifs, or organic design elements with shapes and colors of nature can relax the mind and body too. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen with their soft textures and earthy vibe simulate the calm of a nature walk. Natural elements don’t have to be soft or visually soothing to benefit sleep. Brick, stone, sand, and houseplants can be beneficial too. They also open the door for self-expression and a unique take on what it means to blend the indoors with the out.

FOCUS ON THE BED As the largest piece of furniture in the bedroom, the bed is often, though not always, the focal point. It should also be the most inviting space. Soft textures, luxurious pillows in all sizes, and throws that add dimension create a bed that’s hard to exist. The design should also have the practical in mind. Yes, extra pillows make you want to jump on the bed, but make sure there are enough functional pillows that you can keep your spine aligned while you sleep.

Author Bio: Samantha Kent is a researcher for SleepHelp.org. Her favorite writing topic is how getting enough sleep can improve your life. Currently residing in Boise, Idaho, she sleeps in a California King bed, often with a cat on her face.

However, when choosing a color palette, you also have to take into account your personal, ethnic, and cultural experiences and preferences. Any color with which you have a negative connotation could potentially affect your ability to fall asleep. A color, with which you associate peace and calm even if it’s bright red, could benefit you. The key is to create a palette that reduces stress and calms your mind and body.

CONTROL NATURAL LIGHT Nature in the bedroom is a good thing. However, there are certain aspects that need to be carefully monitored and controlled because of the way they affect the sleep cycle. Natural light, for example, can suppress sleep hormones. Whether it’s sunlight from an early summer morning or moonlight in the winter, natural light is absorbed by the eyes and sent directly to the circadian region of the brain where it triggers the “awake” signal. Bedrooms with a wall of windows need sufficient window coverings to block out all light at night. Artificial light needs just as much consideration. Any task lighting should point away from or be diffused as it nears the bed. Dimmer switches are a simple way to provide ambient light control as bedtime grows near. Good bedroom design balances beauty with practicality. Walking into your bedroom should feel like a release from stress and pressure. Tips To Move Across The Country With Your Family

You need to be careful when it comes to moving across the country with a family. You’re going to want to take this a step at a time, so everything goes well for you. Here, you’re going to get the tips you need to start moving as soon as possible to your new home.

BOXES & PACKING Moving is something you need to pack for, and when you pack, it has to be done right. First, you’re going to need to figure out where you’re going to get boxes from. One idea is to go to a local grocery store to ask them if they can give you a few boxes. Many stores go through tons of boxes every day, and they recycle them so they will provide them with a way to save themselves a bit of work. You may also be able to find moving boxes in bulk that you can purchase online, so shop around if that’s how you’re going to get what you need. When packing, you’re going to want to make sure you label all of your boxes in the right manner. You don’t want to rush through and put things that are fragile in boxes that are not marked as such, or else you won’t be careful with whatever you have in the boxes. Even if a company is packing for you, tell them you want everything labeled. Generally, professionals will label boxes, but it doesn’t hurt to remind them to do so if they aren’t for some reason. CHOOSING MOVING COMPANY Many moving companies can help you move if you don’t want to do all of your work. If you’re going to hire people to help, you have to make sure that they are charging a price that is worth it. Make sure you let them know that you’re doing a cross country move so they can give you a more accurate price quote. Also, a guide to cross country moving tips can help you to find the best and reliable professional movers for your move. Don’t just go with the first company you find because it pays to shop around and see who has the best

prices and avoid it because they charge too much. Don’t just hire a moving service based on price, however, you also need to find out if they will be worth your money to work with based on the quality of service they provide. If you want to learn more about the quality of service you’re going to get, you’re going to want to look up reviews on a company to get the information you need. When looking at reviews, please make sure they are recent, so they are likely to be still true of the company if anything has changed with them recently.

any service, including moving. DOING THE RESEARCH When moving on your own without help, you’re going to want to know if you can return your moving truck to a place in or around the city you’re moving into. Don’t get stuck in a moving truck that you can’t return without driving it far away. Many moving truck companies operate out of most major cities, and some are in smaller areas. When working with a moving truck service, make sure that you read reviews

TECH FOR THE MOVE If you’re moving far away with kids, they’re going to need something to do in your vehicle as you travel to your next home. For instance, you can let them use a tablet to play a few games you downloaded before moving, and that should keep them busy for a while. But, if you go with electronics, make sure you have a way to recharge them when running out of battery power. There are many excellent vehicle chargers, so look into that to have things charging while driving your vehicle. SIGNING UP FOR EMAILS There are a lot of options when it comes to moving; you’re just going to want to make sure that you know if a company has specials or not. Sometimes, if you go to the website of someone that does moving work, you can get a deal on their services. For some websites, you’re going to want to make it a point to sign up for the email marketing list they have in place, so you know when they have some deals. Don’t think that you have to pay full price because sometimes you can find deals on

to only work with companies worth the investment. Now you’re more aware of what you have to do when you want to move across the country with a family. Don’t rush this because you don’t want to make costly mistakes. Just use what you learned here, and in the end, you’ll do just fine.
