As the founder of Ashley Yeates Interior (AYI) & Associates, Ashley Yeates draws from her lifelong passion for the environment and design to create luxurious and sustainable furniture collections and interior layouts that have garnered widespread recognition. Her designs are meant to outlast the mass-produced items prevalent today, enhancing the appeal and durability of a variety of spaces, from restaurants and office environments to schools across the United States.
One of Ashley’s projects involved revolutionizing the interior of a very small 1960s home in California. She added a variety of new features without tearing down or adding square footage to the property, positively impacting the environment. HAVEN spoke with Ashley to learn more about the innovative strategies she utilized to accomplish the goals of the renovation.
In the serene enclave of Carmel Highlands, an artist colony just off Highway One to Big Sur, interior designer Ashley Yeates embarked on a remarkable project: the renovation of a dated 1960s home perched precariously on a cliff. The challenge was substantial— how to breathe new life into a small, two-bedroom house with limited space for expansion due to its dramatic location.
“Sustainable design doesn’t mean more; it means less,” Yeates emphasizes. “It’s about how you can take less and create enough interest in detail, connecting the inside to the outside of your space.” Ashley poses some key obstacles to sustainable design that her work has confronted: “ When we’ve developed to the point where we don’t have space to go new, or the conditions are too difficult to build new, or we want to watch our footprint, how can we modify something that’s no longer considered aesthetically pleasing into something truly interesting?”

The secondary bedroom posed another challenge: the clients wanted it to function as a guest room, office, and yoga space. Yeates’s solution was a cleverly designed Murphy bed. When the bed is up, it appears as a yoga mirror with cabinetry on the side. When the bed is down, the mirror remains elevated off the floor. This multipurpose design allowed the small room to serve three functions, maximizing space efficiently.
The kitchen is another testament to Yeates’s ability to blend functionality with aesthetic appeal, with a kitchen island that doubles as a bar where one can eat. She designed the cabinetry with black iron details, making it look as though butterflies had landed on the surfaces. This design choice brings the outside in, making the room feel larger and more connected to the natural beauty outside.
Ashley considers integrating interior spaces with outdoor surroundings as a timeless design approach, ensuring that the designs consistently remain relevant year after year. Such designs are inherently sustainable because they’re built to last, and also make the spaces feel more spacious and open. “It’s all about detail.
It’s not about filling the room with things, but doing just the right amount,” says Ashley. “The views were so beautiful, I wanted to ensure the inside complemented the outside. Natural elements, like stone and wood, made the house feel like an extension of its surroundings,” she says.
In a world where overdevelopment and fast furniture contribute significantly to waste, Yeates’s work stands as a beacon of mindful design. “Less is less to maintain, less is less to deteriorate. By being mindful and keeping it simple, there’s something about it that doesn’t overwhelm. It’s about creating a home that feels good, functions well, and stands the test of time,” she concludes.
