One of Ashley’s projects involved revolutionizing the interior of a very small 1960s home in California. She added a variety of new features without tearing down or adding square footage to the property, positively impacting the environment. HAVEN spoke with Ashley to learn more about the innovative strategies she utilized to accomplish the goals of the renovation. The foundation for sustainable design is education and importance of how we each play a small role in the bigger picture. I was grateful to have the opportunity to remodel All Saint’s Day School and share my design vision alongside a sustainable mission. As a parent to a son with asthma and hyper-sensibilities, my top priorities were functional design, clean environment, lack of clutter and soothing atmosphere.

Sustainable design elements include LED lights, nontoxic paint, handmade tile, proper ventilation, and overall respect for the environment being free from distractions for optimal learning potential. Unlike the environment of schools I grew up in with walls lined in posters, I designed the space from a minimalistic approach as to allow children, like my son, to focus on the lesson taught that day instead of daydreaming about the unnecessary materials on the wall. At the end of the project, it was an honor to speak in front of the school about sustainability and design. I was touched to receive personal thank you notes from each student.

All Saints has been a leader of this community and for schools across the country for enhancing campus life based on natural principles and investing in well-designed outdoor facilities that connect students to nature. This school is beyond blessed to overlook the mountains in Carmel Valley.
