Public places; living room, dining area, and grand staircase (the humorous response to new building regulations for three story structures) occur in appended spaces alongside and under the main sleeping block of the house. Each space in such an open plan is defined and characterized by light. The house is oriented facing south overlooking Monterey Bay. To celebrate the view and enjoy the direct warmth of the sun, a large windowseat occupies the far end of the living room at the lowest and coziest point under the roof.
The design idea for this vacation house grew from the need to house many people in a very small amount of space. The result is a three story “sleeping machine” which contains all the private spaces and bathing facilities.

To the rear of the house the entire grand double staircase is covered with a translucent roofing material. This captures the cool vast reservoir of northern light and balances the intrusive strength of the southern sun. Simultaneously it also helps to visually clarify the concept of a central sleeping structure around which the house is built.
As a result, the building seems a place without shadows; a light bright, music-filled house which the original meeting notes specify as the owner’s desire. Turnbull
Adjacent and to the west of the seat a large diagonal wall is made of glass to create an outside extension of the living area and also to capture the ever changing panorama of the sunsets. The other or east side of the room is windowless but has a sky light running down the rake of the roof allowing the sun to penetrate deeply into the center of the house as well as emphasizing the volumetrics of the living space.
