“Sometimes,” Kristy says, “you don’t just need to get out of the box, you need to throw the box in the trash, because it wasn’t a good box to begin with.” She collaborated with the architect and contractor to design this gorgeous mid-century-meets-modern galley. The offending wall between the rooms was removed, creating space for a huge island, perfect for both prep and socializing, while the newly widened aisle allows effortless movement. The walnut grain of the cabinets was run horizontally to harmonize with the lines of the mid-century split-level. The quartz countertops were continued up the extra-tall backsplash for lightness and an elegant simplicity. The ceiling was raised with a tray that runs the entire length of the room, effecting a sense of airiness one would not have expected this kitchen could achieve. Of the decision to blend the walnut and charcoal painted cabinet colors, Kristy says, “We were combining several chopped-up areas into one larger space with quite a lot of cabinetry. Utilizing the different colors kept the walnut grain from overwhelming the small room, while also visually delineating the functional areas. We picked up the charcoal color in the hardware, the veining of the quartz, and the accents throughout for a subtle continuity.” It’s clear that when you start by asking the right questions, the result is a luxurious design that looks like it should always have been there, while seamlessly supporting your desired lifestyle.
