History of the home
The construction date for the Shamrock School was not found, although it was listed on the Twin Falls County District map of 1912. Lucille Walker, a student from this school, remembered the original school burned down from an overheated stove in the spring of 1924. School was held in the Community Church on the corner until the school was rebuilt.
A new red brick building was quickly constructed, probably in the same position. The two room, single story school was ready for students in the fall of 1924. Entrance with two doors and eight windows on each side of the front, faced west These rooms had hard wood floors and a full basement, stated Fem Manning. Playground equipment of swings, teeter totters and rings were placed in the front yard. In the early years, Shamrock had a stable in back of the school, supplying shelter and hay for the horses.
Mrs. Doris Stradley was a teacher during the 1930’s; then later became the county superintendent
of schools. During an interview with Lorayne 0. Smith from the Times-News, Mrs. Stradley recalled Shamrock District was a “gold mine” because of its high evaluation.
The Amsterdam School closed in 1948 and the District sold the building in May, 1951. Wayne Bauer remembers its huge bell, that could be clearly heard two miles away, was moved to the Shamrock School. Allendale School closed in 1948 or 1949, this school building was moved two miles north, two miles east, half mile north, and placed adjacent to the Shamrock School. The Allendale School became the Shamrock School lunch room.
During 1949, the Shamrock School had seating capacity of 56 in six grades in two rooms, although, they averaged 35 pupils per teacher. Around the early 1950’s, country school districts preferred to hire husband and wife teams to teach in the two room schools.
The woman taught the lower grades, while the man taught the higher grades. They also had a cottage for the teachers and by the instructors being married, this cut down on expenses. Throughout the years, several couples taught at the Shamrock School.
One of the longest tenured country schools in Twin Falls County, Shamrock operated until 1962 or possibly 1965. Decreasing enrollment and high costs forced the closure.
After the Shamrock School closed,
the Allendale/Shamrock lunch room was sold and moved, again, to its current location.
In 1965, Mr. & Mrs. William E. Munger acquired the land and the Shamrock School was purchased. They renovated the schoolhouse. Extensive exterior remodeling, changed the entryway and windows. Two stairways with wrought iron railing lead into the entrance. Six rectangular front windows on each side were modified, creating two windows per side. Landscaping included a brick wall fence, parallel to the road.
