While many Americans have never even visited the underpopulated state of Wyoming, interior designer, Kyra Hageman, has turned a very small portion of this beautiful state into her own personal haven.

Located near the Old Historic Fort Laramie, Kyra and her husband, Jim purchased 50 acres and began building their dream home in the spring of 2015. Having been in the interior design and home staging business for 30+ years as Kyra was excited to finally create a project of her own.

In order to begin construction on their homestead, they wanted to be on-site especially since they were doing a large portion of the construction themselves. In a town with a population lingering right around 200 people, resources were slim and it took several years to complete. Kyra and Jim bought a 12’ x 24’ two-room shed and she began her own mini-project to live in during the home construction. Complete with a penny-tiled floor, queen bunk beds for functionality, and use of vertical space this guest-house turned Airb nb has a modern western flair of its own.

The house itself was completed in 2017 and was ready for a mix of the old and the new. “I had some beautiful staple pieces I knew I wanted to keep from previous houses and my own home staging collection,” says Hageman, “but it was also an opportunity for me to select pieces I had been wanting for years since they could finally come together seamlessly in a space I had designed to fit them.”

The exterior of the home is very industrial, boasting steel siding, a heavily pre-rusted roof, and concrete decking. This follows through into parts of the interior; a floor-to-ceiling steel fireplace is the focal point of the living room, where glam fixtures, and rustic artwork soften the surroundings.

The true enticement of the home is the accentuation of the outside, by bringing pieces of it inside. Overlooking a gorgeous bend in the North Platte River, the outer wrap-around deck is accessible from the large sliding glass doors allowing a view of the water from the dining room as well as the living room. Corner windows above the sink allow for a perfect view of the turtles, deer, antelope, and their four horses all while washing dishes. A Native American bead from an anthill found by Kyra’s husband in the hills just miles from their property sits on the windowsill and transitional furniture blends seamlessly with the trees sprout ing up along the banks outside.

“It’s often hard to get people to leave,” says her husband, James, “they sit down and start watching the river and it becomes a very inviting place to just relax and let time pass.”

They’ve grown to love hosting in their own haven. Their daughter, Kia, got married just steps from the walk-out basement last fall.

“My mother quickly went from an interior designer to an exterior designer.” Stopping by a local metal scrap yard each week, she put together beautiful outdoor décor focused heavily on a modern-industrial style, while in corporating the nature surrounding the property directly into her installations. “It took “yard art” to a new level,” says their daughter.
