Q&A Q: What were the major design goals in this Project? UMA STEWART: The client asked us to transform the upstairs of the historic barn on their property into a fun place to entertain, and the downstairs to house a gym, kitchenette, pool changing area, and home office. Q: What drove your design process? UMA STEWART: The vision was a blend of comfort, history, and elegance, but with all the functionality of a contemporary space. All the details were designed together to work with the original beams and planks in the upstairs. We used materials and forms that felt familiar to the original architecture. We had rough plans from the architect but reconfigured the space planning and increased the size and number of windows to maximize light and views and keep a theme of symmetry. Q: What made this project a success? UMA STEWART: On our projects success is driven by creating a comprehensive vision of the end result that all members of the team, from the builder, to the AV specialist, to all the trades can coordinate around. We provide the plans and then oversee the execution of all the foreseeable details and unforeseen complications to keep the original vision intact.
