The Spanish Gardener Elliott Arkin’s idea of Pablo Picasso mowing the grass is originally part a series of gardening artists lawn sculptures titled A Peaceable Kingdom created for a solo exhibition on the rooftop garden of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) in Nice, France in 2014. This ten-foot-tall enlargement was completed in 2018 and first exhibited along the waterfront of Brooklyn, New York against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline. As exemplified in many of Arkin’s works, The Spanish Gardener mixes and matches references to artists, artworks and art history to create a quizzical, enchanted journey with many paths and interpretations that can engage viewers on many levels. The sculpture can be seen as a metaphor for the act of creating – sowing ideas and shaping our world, as well as a salutation to the “common man”.
