My Great Grandpa Rufus, who was still spryly caring for the home he’d built as a young man as he approached his hundredth birthday, expressed it even more simply when he said, “We take care of our houses so our houses can take care of us”.
Today a home built with healthy living and especially healthful aging in mind, constructed using non-toxic building materials and methods, is the exception, a curiosity in a modern world where a healthy home is not the current standard of construction. Although LEEDs (Leadership in Energy and Environment), Green Seal, and other green building guidelines offer much appreciated eco friendliness and energy efficiency, they do not infer a living space free of pollutants such as toxic chemicals from building products or electrosmog radiation from electromagnetic fields (EMF) in our environment.
Of the 86,228 chemicals in common production today (a number that was updated by the EPA in 2018 for the first time in 40 years) only 1% of them have been tested for human safety, despite a positive correlation between the increase of chemical production in the USA and disease prevalence. 20% of those chemicals are deemed “Confidential Business Information”, or CBI classified proprietary ingredients that denies the public access to their identities, much less information about their safety.
Preserved wood, engineered wood, paint, adhesives, sealants, cabinets, carpets, drywall, flooring, and hundreds more manmade building products like them, contain known toxic chemicals as well as CBI chemicals. A typical example of one well known chemical often used in these products is formaldehyde, which the National Library of Medicine tells us has been linked in studies to brain cancers and neurodegenerative diseases, like Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s. However it is only one of the toxic chemicals released into the living environment from these conventional building materials over many years.
Although some chemicals can slowly dissipate by outgassing over time, often decades, but another ubiquitous environmental pollutant does not dissipate and worse, its levels in our homes are rapidly increasing –electrosmog, the burgeoning sea of invisible electromagnetic radiation generated by manmade wireless and electrical devices.
Whereas we have long known that ionizing radiation like x-rays kills cells and breaks DNA bonds, thousands of recent studies (Bioinitiative.org) are now showing that non-ionizing radiation from wireless technology like cellphones and WiFi, is constantly exposing us to electromagnetic fields (EMF) that disrupt the inherent electrical functions of our cells, leading to impaired immunity, a variety of cancers and diseases, as well as a host of common everyday ailments. For the first time in our evolutionary history we have generated a manmade electromagnetic environment, an electronic soup, which our nervous system is not designed for.
The good news is that homes can have the ecological and energy benefits of green building as along with the health benefits of biologically safe construction products and practices too! Even better news, it can all be affordable. All it takes is for home buyers to become aware of what to look for, and “vote with their dollars” for more healthy homes.
WHAT ARE THE KEY BUILDING FEATURES TO LOOK FOR IN A HEALTHY HOME?
The site choice of a home in as non-electrosmog-polluted a location as possible, calls first for a buyer to prioritize homes that are furthest from celltowers and, in particular, far from the small cell 5G antennas broadcasting with never-before-used and biologically untested electromagnetic frequencies in the radio/microwave range. Requesting a pre-purchase EMF evaluation, or the Celltower Locator Map at emfexperts.com/cell-tower.html, will help prospective home buyers identify EMF-safer homes. Finding a low-EMF home also means prioritizing homes in locations that are as far from high power transmission lines as possible and for this any good visual satellite map will help. Next, forgo homes and neighborhoods with smart meters, which broadcast wirelessly at power density levels 100-160 times that of cellphones, creating high levels of EMF exposure in the entire neighborhood. Off grid homes are naturally the ideal solution for this, however many Utilities do offer wired analog meters by special request.
When you have found a naturally low-EMF home location, check the surrounding area for industries, agricultural land, golf courses, traffic,
etc., which are toxic wind drift sources of industrial chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, petroleum pollutants, etc.
Next check the home’s orientation. A home that takes advantage of the seasonal sun movements can provide as much free light, heating and cooling as you may ever need to create a healthy and comfortable home. Naturally this is why off grid homes orient the window walls, heat collecting trombe walls, and solar power arrays to face south in the northern hemisphere, and north in the southern hemisphere, so as to maximize the solar gain, energy production and comfort factor of the home.
Now it’s time to look at the exterior construction materials. With the rise in public awareness of the Sick Building Syndrome, home buyers are realizing what a health benefit and pitfall avoider, it is to have “breathable walls”. One leading example is Faswall, an organic building block made of sustainable recycled materials with a high thermal mass providing a superior insulation factor for zero energy use, and in addition to providing fire and mold resistance, better air quality and climate control, it is inherently capable of withstanding climate change and will endure for centuries to come.
Look for metal roofs, as opposed to petroleum based asphalt shingles, or plastic/adhesive based roof coating. A metal roof blocks EMF waves from celltowers, antennas and satellites, in addition to offering the advantage of rain catchment, in other words - free water.
Speaking of free water, finding a house with an Atmospheric Water Generator system, which harvests pure water from the air, is definitely a leading edge advantage considering the droughts forecasted for much of the southwest, water tables dropping even in the nation’s largest subterranean aquifers, and both ground water and surface water becoming more and more contaminated. Look for a water-healthy and water wise house. Know where the water supply comes from and ask for the water test reports. Ideally purchase a home with a built in wholehouse filter to take out the thousands of aptly named forever chemicals, and other emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals excreted into our waste water systems that cannot easily be filtered out, not even by public water treatment facilities.
Inside the home, an EMF-safety conscious living space can be easily recognized by the absence of wireless technology and smart devices. Avoiding interior electrosmog can be as simple as opting for wired connections, including wired connectivity to the internet, which is not only much safer biologically, but also more secure and faster. Additionally, all wiring of any kind will be housed inside metal conduits to mitigate the electromagnetic fields generated by flowing current, thus keeping the living space safely shielded.
Take into consideration the interior building materials and any other sources of indoor pollutants you can avoid by making informed health conscious purchase decisions. One common example is drywall, which is an artificial version of the mined gypsum that has been used as far back as the Egyptian pyramids. Today’s drywall is now manufactured with “fly ash”, another word for the pollutants trapped by industrial smoke stack scrubbers. Although these contaminants are no longer allowed to be emitted into our atmosphere, in drywall however they are deemed safe enough for humans to breathe due to the paper covering, which incidentally is one of the most insidious toxic mold breeding grounds in a home.
Prospective home buyers or builders can inform themselves on these types of issues and discover many other undesirable commonly used building materials in the book “Prescriptions for a Healthy House” (2022 Edition) by architect Paula Baker-Laporte, where healthier alternatives are also explained, such as wallboard made from health promoting magnesium or gypsum based plasters, both of which are non-toxic and (there is that word again) breathable.
To complete the breathable skin of the home in order to achieve the most healthful indoor air quality possible, you will also want the walls finished with vapor permeable and zero VOC (zero volatile organic compound) paints or materials.
