ON THE COVER: Inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, in a working-class neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1960, Warhol turned his attention to the pop art movement, which began in Britain in the mid-1950s. In 1962, he began a large series of celebrity portraits, featuring Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Elizabeth Taylor. Warhol made his series of Campbell’s Soup Cans in 1962 and exhibited them the same year in his first solo pop art exhibition at Ferus Gallery in LA. Find out more about Andy Warhol at warhol.org or visit The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM
Polk State College has launched the Associate in Science in Hospitality & Tourism Management Program for students seeking a degree and certifications that lead to in-demand, high-wage careers in Polk County’s booming industry and beyond. This degree will provide students with foundational skills and knowledge in management, marketing, and procurement. Students will select one of three focus areas: Food & Beverage Management, Hotel Resort Management, and Event Planning. Careers in these areas boast median annual salaries of approximately $50,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs in these areas are also expected to grow between 10% and 18% by 2031, which is much faster than the growth of the average job.
FUNDS AVAILABLE
The City of Winter Haven has funds which are now available for housing activities that are designed for eligible very low, low, and moderate income households based on the following categories by priority: emergency repairs; housing rehabilitation; and down payment assistance. Applications for assistance will be accepted beginning September 1, 2023 and will be ranked for assistance on a first-qualified, first-served basis. ELBERT ELEMENTARY
Unofficially named Scenic Terrace, the new school is located at 2885 Scenic Highway in Haines City. It measures nearly 157,000 square feet and has the capacity to serve about 1,600 students. Initially, Scenic Terrace will serve as a temporary home for Elbert Elementary, which will be undergoing a complete modernization. It would not be feasible to revamp the Elbert campus while students and staff are onsite, so they’ll spend the next two years at Scenic Terrace. Once construction is complete at Elbert, Polk County Public Schools intends to use Scenic Terrace as a traditional K-8 zoned public school, providing more capacity to serve the rapidly growing district.
CAFE EXPANSION
Sidewalk cafes are permanently returning to downtown Winter Haven. The temporary spaces were up during the pandemic and now they are coming back. The city has designed spaces along Central Avenue between 2nd Street NW (starting at the crosswalk mid-block) and 4th Street NW and two along 4th Street NW facing Central Park. Some important things to know: access to all businesses along this street will be open for the entire project; street closures will occur temporarily during some phases of the project; and the parking garage is open with available spaces to park.
CREATIVE THREADS: LAST CALL
The City of Winter Haven has announced Creative Threads: Winter Haven’s T-Shirt Design Contest, a unique city-wide initiative aimed at fostering and recognizing local talent across all age groups. Now through September 15, 2023, they invite community members of all ages to create designs that represent Winter Haven. Entries are divided into five age categories: 7 yrs and under; 8-12 years old; 13-18 years old; 19-24 years old; 25+ years old. They welcome diverse perspectives and creative interpretations of what makes Winter Haven special to each participant. Submissions are now being accepted and can be turned in at Winter Haven City Hall or via email to Tishawna Soleyn at tsoleyn@mywinterhaven. com. Download the entry form at mywinterhaven.com.

seen in colorful, nature-inspired pieces around Polk County, like in the Create mural at Catapult in Lakeland or the oranges and butterflies in Slice of Happiness in Lake Wales. A Lakeland native, Fazio graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 2017. Fazio has painted over 20 murals across Central Florida from Tampa to Anna Maria Island and describes herself as a “new age flora and fauna artist.”

Polk County drag performer Trishelle Michaels is dynamite on stage with killer costumes and fun lip-syncing solos. “When I’m on the mic, I try to make people laugh. I think that’s one of my attributes, and what draws people into me is my personality,” said Michaels. She regularly performs across the county. In her own words, “Trishelle is a role model. Trishelle is a promoter. Trishelle is someone that you could come and talk to. [...]” If you’re looking for plenty of laughs and to be awed by a top-rate performer – you’ve got to see Trishelle!

These cute framed minis have funny phrases with an adorable cross stitch flower or rainbow to soften them up. Grab your friends a “bitch please,” “Treat yo self,” or “mind your business,” framed mini cross stitch today! Or, order a cross stitch kit from Pin + Needle to create for yourself. Send Lyndsey a message, and she can get a pet or family portrait started for a future birthday or housewarming gift. “Our motto is ‘We don’t ask questions, and we don’t judge,’” so don’t be afraid to really ask for what you want!

BEST HIDDEN GEM
CIRCLE B BAR RESERVE
4399 Winter Lake Rd, Lakeland (863) 534-7377
polknature.com/explore/circle-b-bar-reserve
Circle B Bar Reserve is one of the county’s finest hidden gems. It can be a quiet respite away from it all and an adventure full of nature and wildlife. Located on the northwest shore of Lake Hancock, Circle B is a former cattle ranch consisting of several distinct ecosystems across its 1,267 acres. This nature oasis offers activities like hiking, photography, and painting and has picnic shelters, restrooms, and paved parking with handicapped-accessible and grassy areas. According to the Polk County Environmental Lands Program, “You’re almost guaranteed to see alligators in Lake Hancock, often considered the headwaters of the Peace River, which flows more than 100 miles from Polk County southwest to the Gulf of Mexico.”

Best Book of Nostalgic Florida: THROUGH THE GROVES
By Anne HullHull grew up in rural Florida, running through the groves. This is her memoir of that time - the changes that were happening, both personal and societal. Hull captures a certain innocence set against the darker elements of changing times. Although there is beauty in this story, there is also a lot of sadness and trauma. For me, this book is worth the read for the descriptions alone - the memories of Central Florida in the late 1960s were so poetically realistic I could smell the orange blossoms and feel the sting of the mosquitoes.
Best Book Featuring Magical Realism: THE LAST OF THE MOON GIRLS
By Barbara DavisI just finished “Last of the Moon Girls” *sigh* - it is so good and so what I needed right now. This sweet escape of a book blends romance and suspense to tell the story of Lizzy Moon, a young woman who returns to her family’s lavender farm after her grandmother’s death. Lizzy has always been fascinated by her family’s history of healing but has spent a life running from the dark side of their gift. Overall, it is an atmospheric read involving a few of my favorite things - perfume, mystery, and just a little sprinkling of magic.
Best Walk with a Movie Star: WALKING WITH SAM
By Andrew McCarthyI wouldn’t have thought I had much in common with a major movie star; however, I found myself relating to McCarthy on many levels in this memoir of his time walking the Camino De Santiago. McCarthy first walked the Camino in his twenties, so when his son Sam is 19, McCarthy invites him to join him on a second walk, hoping to create a more meaningful connection with him before he leaves for college. I have a son Sam’s age, and the honest conversations between Sam and his father resonated with me, as did McCarthy’s anxieties, dreams, and general ponderings of looking back on life. McCarthy is an exceptional travel writer, and his descriptions of the quaint villages, stunning landscapes, and the interesting people they meet along the way were vivid and entertaining and made me want to grab my hiking boots ASAP.

Best Unsettling Thriller: THE GUEST ROOM
By Chris BohjalianBohjalian’s writing is so good I didn’t want to put it down, but the subject was so horrific I had to keep stopping for emotional breaks. The story follows Richard Chapman, a successful investment banker who reluctantly agrees to host his younger brother Philip’s bachelor party at his own home. When two exotic dancers and their bodyguards arrive at the party, everything quickly goes very wrong. The narrative is mainly split between Richard and one of the dancers, Alexandra. Richard’s story is of the party’s aftermath and the effect on his life; Alexandra’s story is of her life leading up to the party. While this is a gritty thriller, it is also a heartbreaking book that raises awareness of the difficult subject of sex trafficking.
Best Book with a Mind-Bending Narrative: LOOKING GLASS SOUND
By Catriona WardExpect to be lost in this book, like really lost - this book takes the idea of an unreliable narrator to a new place. At first, the book seems like a quixotic tale of summer friends Wilder, Nat, and Harper set on an island off the Maine coast. The three friends bond over the scary local lore of the Dagger Man and explore the romantic tension between them. However, with each page turn, the story morphs into something much more sinister. Soon, you will find yourself through the looking glass, and nothing is what it seems. I don’t want to give anything away, but the book is a coming-of-age story, a murder mystery, and a supernatural horror story all in one book.
Best Book of Historical Fiction: BEYOND THAT, THE SEA
By Laura Spence-AshBeatrix is an 11-year-old who is sent to America from England during World War II to stay safe. She finds herself at the home of the Gregorys - a prosperous New England family very different from her own home in London. Bea quickly grows into herself and becomes a fundamental part of her new family while across the sea, her old family is falling apart. “Beyond That, the Sea” is a beautiful, evocative story about family, both the ones we are born to as well as the ones we choose. The book spans decades and is told through multiple points of view in a way that captures the complexities of inner-related lives.
