SAFETY NET EXPANDS FOR SPRING TRAINING
DOWNTOWN: BBQ IS IN, MERCHANTS ARE OUT
Fans attending Detroit Tigers Spring Training games this year (the season starts Feb. 22) will have fewer chances to take home foul balls — but they’ll also have fewer chances to get bonked on the head. New safety netting will protect roughly 95 percent of the seats at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, the team says. What about visibility? The team told the Detroit Free Press the new netting is nearly half the thickness of the material used in the past.
Downtown Lakeland continues its transformation into a dining and drinking destination. Mojo’s Federal Swine and Spirits has opened in the Federal Building with another restaurant/bar following. Valet parking, which was scaled back last year, is about to expand. Lakeland Brewing Co. on Lake Mirror has closed, but Swan Brewing on Lake Wire will open its taps soon. Brooke Pottery, which led the downtown retail revival in the 1990s, has closed, as has Two Hens and a Hound. In addition, the merchants organization that coordinated First Friday and the Food Truck Rally is disbanding and has turned those events over to the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority.
NEW COMMISSION UPHOLDS MONUMENT DECISION The fiercest advocates for keeping the Confederate monument in Munn Park thought they saw an opening when four new city commissioners were seated in January. They tried to get the new group to overturn a December decision to begin the process of relocating the statue to Veterans Park or another part of the city. New Commissioner Michael Dunn attempted to help them out, but failed to get a second on several motions he made designed to keep the memorial in place. Expect a plan for moving the monument in March, the city manager said.
THE BEST SPRING REBUILDING A CLEANING FOR OF GOLF COURSE LAKE BONNET? INTENTIONS Builder Dave Tavlin is making a multimillion-dollar bet that he can attract new players if he renovates the rough-aroundthe-edges golf course at the 55+ Sandpiper community along North Socrum Loop Road. Improvements will be paid in part from proceeds on building and selling up to 47 new homes in the development. “It’s not the biggest course in town,” Tavlin told The Ledger. “I don’t know if it will ever be the nicest, but it’s going to be as nice as it can be.”
There’s nothing like an infusion of private dollars and the prospect of boaters to prompt City Hall to dive into efforts to clean up a lake. When built by a nonprofit organization, the 160-acre Bonnet Springs Park will open the previously isolated Lake Bonnet to thousands of recreation seekers. But first it needs to be cleaned of algae and muck. City commissioners took the first step when they authorized $198,000 for a feasibility study that’s expected to take a year. When it’s done, they’ll be applying for state funds to restore the lake.
Lakeland Electric had the best of intentions when it sent 20 employees and equipment to help repair the hurricanedamaged power grid in Puerto Rico in late October. At first city leaders reported all went well. But records revealed that a combination of bureaucratic chaos and blocked roads meant crews worked only 2 1/2 of the 22 days they were gone. Separately, a 39-year-old union lineman who volunteered to help on the island was flown home to Lakeland in January after he fell 80 feet from a cable that had suspended him over a transmission tower he was working on. 11
ARE YOU READY TO VOTE AGAIN?
SOUTHERN SUBURBS SET TO SPREAD
A special election is being held to select a state legislator to represent an oddly shaped district that largely skirts city limits to take in suburban areas north of Lake Gibson and also east of Combee Road. Republicans Jennifer Spath and Josie Tomkow compete in a primary election Feb. 20, and the winner faces Democrat Ricky Shirah May 1. The ultimate victor will replace Neil Combee, who resigned the District 39 seat to take a job in the Trump administration.
Look for up to 1,300 new houses in a new development planned by former state Sen. J.D. Alexander on 440 acres north of Ewell Road and west of Yates Road. Construction could begin this spring. Alexander’s company and the city of Lakeland are sharing the costs of building road, sidewalks and bike paths in the development, and the county plans to expand West Pipkin Road in the area.
DOWNTOWN WILL CAMERAS PARKING: GET A GREEN SOME FEES LIGHT? REDUCED Drivers caught in errant right turns by red-light cameras often complain that the $158 fine feels like a money grab by the city. Lakeland police counter that the presence of the cameras changes driver habits and that increases safety. And they add that none of the fine money enriches the city. Those are the arguments they’ll be making this month or next when the City Commission will decide whether to renew the contract for the cameras that have been in place since 2009.
People who come downtown to shop and dine during business hours are finding more free and lower-cost parking spaces. But using those spots means they may have to walk a bit farther. It’s now free to park in the lower level (Cedar Street entrance) of the Main Street garage after 3 p.m. There are some spaces near Lake Mirror where it’s free to park all day. And users of the Parkmobile app can park in some spaces on Orange, Main and Massachusetts for just 25 cents an hour after the first two free hours.

Swan City Roller Derby Anyone who has seen the 2009 film Whip It or any of the 1970s and 80s depictions of the sport have probably formed an idea about what they think roller derby is. Most people think It’s two teams of hostile, pushy women slamming into each other for maximum injury, right? A lot of people aren’t even familiar with how the sport is played. Do you get extra points if you make someone cry, is there a ball involved? No, to all of that.
13
I too, had expected to meet a group of rough and tumble girls with an excess of aggression, throwing elbows at anyone who looked at them wrong. The girls of Swan City Roller Derby shattered all preconceptions I had about them. They are a collective of mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. An eclectic group of badasses, all ages, shapes, and sizes. Laughing and joking with each other, having fun on their skates, the Swan City Roller Derby seems to be a sisterhood that anyone would be lucky to be a part of.
The team spent the first year training and recruiting, with 2017 being their first competitive season. They have around 15-20 active league members and of those, about 11 compete.
I met with six teammates, Tess Tapia aka “Slamazon Princess,” who is a case manager for new clients at VISTE by day and is a blocker for the team. Cynthia Fulco aka “Deadly Cinn” is an insurance title agent and jammer for the team. Sonia Jaimes aka “Bettie Bombas” is a stay at home mom and blocker. Mary Leslie aka “Shrimp N Roll” works in film production and is a blocker. Adrienne Hodge aka “Yo Adrienne” works at the same title agency as Cynthia and is a blocker. And finally, Holly Buxman aka “Hell Oh! Kitty” works in accounting for Publix and is also a blocker.
Mary explained how the sport works. Each team has 4 blockers and 1 jammer and, “They’re lined up so that the jammer is supposed to get past the opposing team’s blockers. Once they make the initial pass, they loop back around and get a point for every opposing team member that they pass, scoring up to 5 points, because if they lap the jammer, that means it’s a grand slam.”
Swan City Roller Derby previously belonged to another Lakeland team that disbanded. In January of 2016, several of them wanted to continue the sport and started a non-profit league of their own, dubbing it Swan City Roller Derby to pay homage to their home city. Tess explained the name, “We didn’t want to make it too niche and just make it clear that we’re a Lakeland team.”

more of a show, a spectacle. We’ve really grown to evolve into more of a professional, competitive sport so we are more similar to football than…” “Fake wrestling,” someone chimed in.
Their season lasts from January to October, and they compete with teams from all over the state. Last season they played bouts from Jacksonville to Miami, according to Tess. They practice 2-3 times a week for 2 hours each practice.
The girls wear plenty of padding and the chances of getting hurt participating in roller derby are no higher than any other physical activity. Leading the way with the topic of breaking bones and aggressive players, I asked the team if there were any other misconceptions they’d like to bust about the sport. Mary chimed in with, “There’s no ball!” They all laughed. “We don’t throw elbows,” said another teammate. Tess said, “For most people, the reaction that most skaters get from people that watched it back in the 70s when it was much
14
“They think we’re the WWE on skates or something,” said another, laughing. Mary also wanted to bust the misconception that you have to be a certain body type to play roller derby, saying you can be any size and play the sport. Where do they get their creative names? Either they or the team comes up with them. Mary “Shrimp N Roll”, “When I started with the team, they tried to give me a nickname. I was doing a documentary on the team at the time, they wanted to call me ‘Documary’ and it just didn’t stick.” “You agonize over it for a few months knowing that when you pass your test you’ll get to pick your name. Then you tell people that you trust dearly and then they make fun of you and then it’s back to the drawing board,” said Tess with a smile. I asked the group of friends and teammates what made them want to try the sport. Cynthia answered, “I personally was drawn to roller derby because I was enamored by the sisterhood that teams that I witnessed had. I’d never played competitive sports and I really liked the way they all worked together.
It also seemed really family oriented off the track too.” Mary cut in, “I like hitting people!” The group erupted in laughter and Sonia “Bettie Bombas” seconded that notion. On a serious note, Mary remarked, “The amount of growth you see in people from the start to once they’ve been doing it for a year or two. Actually, even just through our “Fresh Meat” program.” The “Fresh Meat” program, something the team has dubbed their “Ugly Duckling” program because of their namesake, is 2 sessions of 8 weeks in which the first 8 weeks, the ladies learn how to skate and the second 8 weeks they learn how to play the game. Mary continued, “To see the difference in people who go through that training program is amazing and super encouraging.” For many on the team, it was obvious what a big part of their lives it was and just how invaluable roller derby was to them. “I feel more confident having been involved with roller derby because I think it gives you more confidence in your day-to-day life. Where you wouldn’t probably have been as aggressive or assertive, you tend to speak up for yourself, try things, be a little bit more adventurous than you maybe were prior,” said Cynthia. Holly “Hell Oh! Kitty” added, “I’m very introverted and I’m very shy and I hate people looking at me honestly. For some reason once I put on a jersey and everything, I don’t
even think about that,” she continued, “It’s fun and I guess I don’t feel the judgment that I would feel in day-to-day life so it has definitely helped me come out of my shell.” Adrienne had a touching story of the part this sisterhood played in her life. “Three or four months prior to derby I had lost my dad unexpectedly from a heart attack. I was looking for something, I guess as a distraction initially. I had played sports when I was younger, but it had been a ten-year span since I had played.” After watching their game and picking up a recruitment flyer, Adrienne knew she had to do this. “Roller derby was my grief therapy,” she concluded. Swan City Roller Derby has set some goals as a new league. According to Tess, they want to go to bigger competitions, win more games and continue to grow together. “Our goal for next season is to find a home venue so we can start growing our community and our fan base here in Lakeland,” said Tess. Thinking of joining the team, but reservations are stopping you? “Deadly Cinn” has some advice, “If you think you can’t, you’re wrong.” “I’m in my 40’s and if you asked me at age 20 would I be playing roller derby in my 40’s, I would’ve said hell no. I have no plans to retire so I may be the 80-year old on the team. I don’t know, we’ll see how it goes,” she joked. Adrienne and Holly went through the “Fresh Meat” program 3 times before they made it
15
to the veterans where they were able to play in games. Adrienne said, “Doggone it, we were going to pass if it took 10 times!” She added, “Everybody learns at different speeds so don’t give up if you don’t learn it as quickly as the next girl beside you.” Holly added to Adrienne’s thoughts with the determination that the team embodies, “When you really want it,” another girl finished her thought, “you’ll do whatever it takes.” You can find out more about becoming a part of the sisterhood with these ladies by joining them on the track or supporting them in another way through refereeing, becoming an NSO (non-skating official) or a volunteer. Follow them on Facebook: @SwanCityRollerDerby or on Instagram @swancityrollers for updates on recruiting, schedules and more. “Shrimp N Roll” encourages everyone that wants to give it a try to check them out exclaiming, “Come play with us!”

Pianist James Matthews Once homeless, now a renowned and accomplished pianist, James Matthews is nothing short of inspiring. Though James doesn’t throw around the words ‘brilliant’ or ‘protege’ to describe himself, there seems to not be a more fitting description for the musician. “I started playing when I was three and my dad was my first teacher. I grew up playing Jazz music. I didn’t have the classical training until I was much older,” said James, taking me back to where it all started. He began playing recitals from the time he was 9 or 10, but says he didn’t take his craft seriously until middle school when he was first exposed to classical music. He remembers the feeling he got saying, “I have to play this, I have to do this and I fell so in love with it.” “I started to do whatever I could do to become a classical pianist at the time,” he explained. In high school, Matthews fell in love with other genres of music that he still has an affinity for to this day– screamo, heavy rock, and punk from the mid 2000’s are still some of his favorite music genres. Life got pretty interesting for young James after he graduated high school. He attended Florida Southern College, where he was spending about 12 hours a day between his academic studies and piano practice. He described his situation, “I didn’t know where I was going to sleep because I just didn’t have the money to afford to live in Lakeland. My scholarship that I got from Florida Southern only covered tuition so I kind of just did whatever I had to do and slept wherever I could.” Though he was struggling to find somewhere to live, James doesn’t veiw

his time at FSC negatively, remarking, “Looking back on it now almost 10 years later, it was hard at the time, but I definitely wouldn’t change it at all.” It was there that he was taught and mentored by someone he says changed his life. James paused and said thoughtfully of Piano Professor Dr. Robert McDonald who has since passed away, “He was one of the biggest influences in my life and in playing music.”
changing opportunity–he was invited to be on “The Ellen Show.” He talked about playing on the Ellen Show saying,“Playing for millions of people for a show was really cool and that helps you get out there and do more things.” On the show, he was interviewed by Ellen and performed, after which the host surprised him with $25,000 from Shutterfly and every prize that she had given away in her “12 Days of Giveaways” from the previous year.
With a love for where he got his start, James says he would love to come for a concert at FSC and would one day like to play with The Imperial Symphony Orchestra, the first symphony he ever heard.
“The following summer after the initial [concert at] Carnegie Hall and the Ellen Show, I was able to go on a massive concert tour, all over the world.” He played in 30 states, also traveling to Japan and Australia where he played at the Sydney Opera House.
James later attended The University of West Florida where, in 2014, through the encouragement of one of his teachers, he sent a DVD of himself playing Sergei Prokofiev’s “Piano Sonata No. 7” to the American Protege International Piano and Strings Competition. The coveted prize for this competition was a solo performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Aside from the previously mentioned achievements, Matthews also played music in 4 episodes of the TV show, Nashville, where he enjoyed playing the show’s country and gospel music on screen. Speaking of the namesake of where James got his primetime break, he currently lives and goes to school in Nashville, Tennessee, attending Belmont University, seeking his Master’s Degree in Piano Performance.
“I didn’t hear from them for a couple of months, and I think it was over Christmas break, I got an email that I was [one of the] winners.” He reflected, “It was just the craziest thing in the world.” After the performance at Carnegie Hall, the committee gave out medals, certificates, and awards during which the mayor of New York presented him with a medal of musical excellence. He was invited back a year later to play another concert. He soloed twice there in 2017.
“The coolest thing about that, is once I graduate with my degree, I will be able to teach piano at college level which is where I’ll get to find a lot more of the serious music students,” he said. According to James, his piano skill is a mix of nature and practice. Thomas Edison famously quoted, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninetynine percent perspiration,” something

that could be said about James’s inherent piano genius and the 9 to 10 hours a day he practices. “Sometimes the magic just happens and I can’t really explain to you how it does or how it all comes together. Sometimes, after I’ve worked so hard on something, there comes a time where I’m ready to play it and it just happens.” He continued on that inspirational note, “Whenever I’m playing all I care about is creating the most amazing moment of music that will move somebody and that’s when the magic just happens. I’m not worried about the details, I’m not worried about if I’m going to miss a note or make this leap.” James Matthews is optimistic about the opportunities his future holds and has his nose to the grindstone, or fingers to the keys, rather. “I’m always finding pieces of music that are extremely challenging and extremely hard to learn, hard to play. That keeps me very humble,” he laughed, “I’m always finding something that I can’t quite do the first time or maybe spend a month working on one specific piece.” “To get my butt kicked by Beethoven all the time definitely puts things in perspective for me,” James said laughingly. Though it is stressful and hard to stay motivated at times, the pianist said graciously, “I get to wake up and play classical piano for like 10 hours a day and that’s my entire life, it’s the greatest thing ever. I wouldn’t change anything in the world for the way my life is right now.”

Lakeland Community Theatre Performing Mary Poppins Most people are no doubt familiar with the 1964 film based off the book written by P. L. Travers, starring Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and David Tomlinson that had them whistling or trying to spell “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” The story centers around the Banks family of London in need of a nanny for their two kids, Jane and Michael. A mysterious woman, Mary Poppins, shows up at the Banks door. The magical Mary Poppins takes the kids on many exciting escapades, teaching a few lessons along the way, and not just to the children. “It’s called Mary Poppins, but it’s about Mr. Banks and his change and how Mary effects that change. I think that’s what we’re going to delve into, we’re going to make sure the audience sees that change,” remarked Lakeland Community Theatre director, Alan Reynolds. Speaking to the differences between the Cameron Mackintosh, Disney musical and the 1964 movie, Alan said, “There are some character changes like Mrs. Banks is not a suffragette, she’s an ex-actress.” Though it’s not a verbatim copy of the movie, the musical contains most of the crowd-favorite songs like “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Feed the Birds” and more. “Feed the Birds,” according to Alan, was touted to be one of Walt Disney’s favorite songs. Alan remembered, “I grew up on the movie. The movie came out in [1964] and my mom took me Tampa to see it. I remember as a little child, and I fell in love with the movie.”
havenmagazines.com
“It’s different,” said the director about the musical, “I saw it on Broadway when it opened. I actually went to New York to see it because I’m such a Mary Poppins fan.” As a fan of the movie, Alan plans to bring some of the movie’s qualities to LCT’s version of the musical, explaining, “Through the costumes and through the staging, I’m paying a little more homage to the film.”
He added, “I’ve got two cute little kids for Jane and Michael, they’re going to be adorable.” Alan spoke about what message the audience can take away from the production is. “I think the whole thing with Mr. Banks and his change, how family is important to us and not to be a workaholic. The message about spending enough time with your family, being around for your family.” He continued, remarking on the nostalgia the movie holds for him personally, saying, “It’ll be exciting for kids who have never seen Mary Poppins before and it’ll be exciting for kids like me who want to see it again and have that same feeling that you get when you watch it. It’s just life and family-affirming.”
The set alone is sure to be a crowd pleaser with Alan directing the production. This is his third experience with the musical, even winning a BroadwayWorld Orlando Best Set Design in 2014 for his set design in the production of it at Theatre Winter Haven. “I’m using the same elements. It’s a little different since it’s a different space at our theatre, but it should be exciting. All the effects and the magic tricks are in there, Bert flies, Mary flies,” said the director.
Mary Poppins will be playing at Lakeland Community Theater on February 23, 24, 25, March 2, 3, 4, and 9, 10, and 11. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the theatre’s website, www. lakelandcommunitytheatre.com or call them at (863) 603-PLAY (7529).
“It’s a complicated little skit as I put it to somebody,” said Alan, commenting on the effects and tricks that must be pulled off throughout the production. Lakeland Community Theatre’s version of the musical will including flying rigs done by Mr. Delbert Hall with D2 Flying and will enchant the audience with effects including characters flying and kites flying over the crowd.
Lakeland Community Theatre 121 S. Lake Ave. Lakeland FL 33801
Alan talked about what he was looking for when casting the show, saying, “Mary Poppins needs to have that Julie Andrews voice and my Mary [played by Lis Burns] does. Bert [played by Eric Hickok] has to dance, ‘Step in Time’ is one of the iconic numbers of the show.”

Writers @ LPL Writing can be a very personal thing. Sometimes though, taking a personal thing and sharing it with others invested in the same can be encouraging, inspiring growth. Such is the case with Writers @ LPL, a group of writers of all different manners and genres that meet at the Lakeland Public Library to water this personal thing, growing it into a blossoming community. I spoke with Brenda Patterson, the spearhead of the group, and member Dean McCracken. Brenda, a poet and writer, has been working with Lakeland Public Library for 34 years and Dean is a local public historian, writing articles and researching local history and southern history. Though there are records of a writers group at the library as early as the late 1920’s, this current group formed 2 years ago, February marking their second anniversary. The group, intended to be uplifting, encouraging, and constructive for its writers covers more than just the essentials. Brenda remarked, “We talk about everything from the imaginative part of writing to the publishing part of writing, to the business part of writing.” Brenda says she teaches everything “soup to nuts” because the group has so many people of differing levels, from just starting out, on the verge of publishing, to published authors. Dean, who has been with the group since the beginning, said, “I signed up for it because I wanted to understand the procedures that other writers took to their writing and I’ve wanted to write history that might read more like a novel and not some dry piece of dates.” The group generally starts with Brenda greeting any new guests and giving them handouts regarding what the group is and who she is. Then she has either prepared a topic or invites a guest speaker to make a presentation. She tries to make sure that questions are being answered throughout the meeting, either by her as a reference librarian or by other members of the group. Then they get into the writing portion in which she will have a visual, written, or sensory prompt. Over the duration of the meeting, Brenda always tries to find time for members to discuss what writing projects they have going on. Brenda spoke about prompts as helpful tool havenmagazines.com
to get started, saying, “You sit down at that blank piece of paper, and you start and you get maybe two lines, and you cross it out because you’re going for some mythical, magical, perfect something and you’re stymying yourself before you get anything down,” continuing, “I’ve found over the years free writing, timed writing, or writing with prompts sort of kick that editor or perfectionist thing out of the way.”
encouraging them to take on new projects, things they may not have considered before. Dean, a historical writer, explained that in a particular session involving timed poetry where the group had twenty minutes to write a poem, “I wrote a poem about a historic home in South Carolina.” When he finished, confident with what he had written, Dean submitted it to a newspaper in South Carolina and they published it. That was the first poem he ever had published. That experience only inspired him to write more. He has an article being published in February in the Polk County Historical Quarterly, a product of the Polk County Historical Association and will be doing a talk at the library entitled “Black Education and Polk County: Rosenwald Schools” on Feb. 22 based on a project he’s been working on.
Literary fiction, genre fiction, historical, children’s books, poetry, you’d be hardpressed to find more than two or three people working in the same writing subject in this group. “We have experts come in that talk about writing songs, how to do better dialogue in your fiction, fanfiction, the process of how memorization can help your writing, a little of everything,” said Brenda. She adds, “Your writing may not have to do with fiction or may not have to do with poetry, but you can certainly use elements of those things to sort of enrich your writing.”
The group has even encouraged its leader, Brenda Patterson, to branch out with her writing. She is currently writing the library column for The Ledger and has a column online about writing in small form, called “Writing Small” on the website, www.diymfa.com.
She went through a few of the guests they’ve had. One of their last speakers, a married couple with a band called “Hungrytown” producing music in the folk genre did a songwriting workshop with the group.
Having a community is invaluable no matter the creative industry you’re in. Brenda, a lover of poetry, remembered being invited to a poetry group through a woman she met at the library while checking out poetry books. She went to the group formerly called Poets on the Park, now Platform Poets. “I believe that that was the beginning of my truly being a writer and being able to claim it,” she said.
A friend of Brenda’s writes for a Catholic newspaper and also writes fanfiction, which she discussed with Writers at LPL. Another was a poet by the name of Lola Haskins who commits her poetry to memory to perform it. Writers @ LPL is a resource for those involved, giving access to peer review and feedback as well as platforms like “SELF-e” by Biblioboard. Biblioboard and the Library Journal have joined forces to give authors the opportunity to upload their self-published work to the SELF-e platform to then be reviewed by the Library Journal and given “the Selfie stamp of approval,” according to Brenda. Having an endorsement from the respected Library Journal can be a tremendous point of promotion for a writer’s work. Once on the platform, library users can check out their work electronically. “I actually have picked up a new favorite author of my own from that platform, a woman by the name of Rebecca Hunter,” said Patterson. Being involved with the group has boosted the writing morale of many involved,
“They encouraged me, they listened to my fledgling attempts, they gave good feedback,” continued Brenda. “There was
25
something about us being there together, it made me write. Because I had built up confidence in writing poetry, that meant I built up confidence in writing other things.” She finished her thought, “Find your tribe as they say. I want people to find their tribe, I want people to find their writing tribe.” Dean has certainly found his tribe speaking to the importance of the group to his writing, “Group writing, group collaboration is very important to me–talking to other people about their methods and it’s been very rewarding.” The February and March meetings will be led by guest host Charles Frierman. Frierman is an accomplished fantasy writer, storyteller, and improv expert. Writers @ LPL meet the first Wednesday of the month at Lakeland Public Library at 7 pm. The Cob & Pen “Craft Your Own Experience” Few restaurateurs are lucky enough to establish in a location rich in history and beloved by locals, even fewer have the fortune to create the layout for their new space from the lighting fixtures to the bar layout. Jason Ellis, Corey Ripley, and Richard Sherfey found themselves with just such an opportunity. They wanted to create a space where you can craft a new experience each time you came. Walking around the elegant grounds, you will find areas for quieter conversations or more private dates. With a combination of vintage elegance and modern industrial, the comfort and sophistication lures you in.
bratwursts, sauerkraut, and pickles. What we are not equipped to make we obtain from other local businesses, like Born and Bread and House of Carbs. We think and hope that when you’re there [at The Cob & Pen] you get that experience and can taste that we ‘craft’ and explore everything from start to finish, except maybe the ketchup and mustard!” Expectations high, I perched with a couple of friends at a long, communal high top table. We started with red wine, a blackberry cider, and a light beer as well as a trio of appetizers to munch while we sipped. We tried the hummus and crackers, poutine, and the millennial favourite of avocado toast. Overall, the mild flavors of the appetizers allowed the drinks to take the spotlight. Along with the second round of drinks- a changeup of a rich chocolate porter and a Pom-e-Cran-It Champagne Cocktail- we ordered dinner. A jalapeño burger, BBQ pork sandwich, and fries with a side of Cob & Pen fry sauce. The jalapeño burger is a bar staple and the fries were beautifully thin and crispy, but the real champion was the BBQ pork sandwich. The pimento cheese and pickles were delicious between a House of Carbs roll.
The goal was to be both casual and elegant. Upon arriving, the manicured lawn, posh grace of the historic building, and lounging, laughing patrons cannot be ignored. Based on something as simple as the diverse crowd enjoying themselves, it is clear that the vision of which Ellis spoke was achieved. As far as service is concerned, Ellis stated they, “Strive…to be friendly and accepting to all. [They] like getting around the tables, socializing, and being friends [with the community]. Nobody’s perfect- we are not perfect… but we strive for quality in everything we do.” This includes a hand selected wine and beer list which “changes sometimes even throughout the day,” Ellis said with a laugh. He went on to explain how The Cob & Pen “make [nearly] everything there… from start to finish, we make the

mood was very casual with a small group playing games out on the lawn, a few people on the patio taking in the Florida sun, and a smattering of people inside having conversations in the various nooks of the bar. I spoke with Ellis about future plans for The Cob & Pen who said, “We want to be ever primed to evolve and never want to be stagnant or lazy.” Such evolutions to occur are menu changes, reworked desserts, and brunch- something none of the partner-trio have tried to tackle before. An exciting addition to look for in February will be live, local music; as everyone knows how much we Lakelanders love our local music. As far as events go, quarterly The Cob & Pen hosts a not-for-profit event to support local charities. “We love charities and are gearing up to have our quarterly charity event to give back to the community,” said Ellis. I, for one, am looking forward to a bright future for this charming establishment where you can truly craft your own experience. They take their business seriously as well with Foshee keeping 2 master watchmakers, 2 master clock technicians, 3 master GIA graduate jewelers, and 3 GIA graduate gemologists in house.
Clyde Foshee, owner of Foshee Jewelers, was born in 1933, and raised right here in Lakeland. He attended Lakeland High School, where through a happy accident he got into what would become his life’s work. Mr. Foshee explained, “It was really an accident the way I got into it. My dad worked in the groves and when I was in the tenth grade, I thought I knew all I needed to know and I was just going to quit school and go to work with my dad.”
Mr. Foshee has seen jewelry trends come and go saying, “Just when I think you can’t have a prettier set, they just keep coming up with different designs and everything. It’s just out of this world.” I asked the jewelry store owner why jewelry is such a symbol of love and adoration. He answered, “It’s just a lasting gift. The way I feel about it, it really shows a person the way they feel about [them], it means something. It’s something that in most cases is kept and treasured.”
At the end of tenth grade, a DCT teacher told him about the DCT program in which he could spend half the school day at school and half the day working a job. Foshee listened to him, and admittedly wasn’t interested. The teacher took him to a watch repair shop, where he spent a few days.
His daughter, Pam Cothern, who worked at the shop every Saturday when going through school, even doing the DTC program like her father, added to that thought. “Any jewelry that you get for Valentine’s Day especially [is special] because it’s from your sweetheart and it’s a keepsake. Jewelry is all about sentimental value,” she continued, “It just shows love.”
“All the time I was saying there was no way on earth I could do that, but I went out there in the grove and worked a whole summer. I said if the good Lord would let me live through that summer, I’d go back to school,” he laughed heartily, telling the story.
If you come to the store looking to find a lasting gift for your special someone, you won’t be disappointed. According to Mr. Foshee, “I think we’ve got anything that they could even think about and if we don’t most of the time we can get what they’re looking for in a day’s time. We’ve got a large selection of watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, everything you can think of.”
He went back to school where, he was in the DCT program for the last two years of high school. Afterwards, he attended a watchmakers school in Jacksonville for a year. “I already knew a lot about watches when I went to watchmakers school because I completed the course in a little bit less than a year,” he remarked. He came back to Lakeland and started his own business, Foshee Jewelers in 1953.
www.fosheejewelers.com This multifaceted shop offers a selection of fine jewelry, watches, and clocks, including Grandfather and Cuckoo clocks, and offers appraisals, jewelry and watch repair. Mr. Foshee said, “We’re probably the oldest jewelry store anywhere around here that does everything. We do watch repair, we do clock repair, we do all kind of jewelry repair. I’ve got an appraiser, a gemologist on duty. I don’t know of any jewelry store that does all those services in one building.” A family owned and operated business, Mr. Foshee has his son doing clockwork,

Home Essentials They eventually moved to their current location due to development in the area with Marni remarking, “We had the choice of retiring or coming back here. I love people, I love talking, and I love teaching so we decided to come back to where we are.”
Why shop locally? Because of people like Marni Johnson and stores like Home Essentials. There’s unmeasurable value in getting the opinion and insight from a shop owner whose entire professional life is dedicated to knowing about their products and serving their customer base. Sure, it’s easy to throw something in your cart online or run into a name brand retail store and settle for what they have on the shelf. But what you lose in that exchange, is the ability to ask questions about what you buy and trust the expert opinion of someone immersed in that industry.
Home Essentials sells appliances, equipment, and gadgets for cooking. They have a line of Wolf gourmet small appliances–blenders, a countertop oven, toasters, and a new product for cooking sous vide, an underwater cooking method.
Having a building with old bones and a fascinating history to go along with it can only make your shopping trip that much better. The building in which Home Essentials is located was built around 1910 with craftsman style features. It was a railway house, accommodating not those who traveled the rales, but the rail-workers. Interestingly enough, this building along with another building a block south from Home Essentials are the only two railway hotels left standing in Lakeland.
Along with Wolf, the store carries All-Clad Cookware, which is stainless steel and made in the USA, bakeware, cookware, a line of ceramic ware from Emile Henry, and Staub cast iron products. Marni also carries more unique products like PooPourri and Lampe Berger Lamps and Oils. The owner showed me around the store, pointing out a product line they’ve carried for three years called Think Outside. It is a line of yard art made from recycled metal. According to Marni, the company is in Texas and is owned by a Vietnam veteran. “When he was in Vietnam he recognized the skill and craftsmanship of the Vietnamese and so he set his factory up in Vietnam, but the artist, Aaron, is in Australia. We have three nations running together here and they just do the most creative work,” Marni explained.
Marni was told that the name was either the Orange Hotel or the Orange Blossom Hotel originally. She explained that it was a center hall plan with twelve rooms upstairs and twelve downstairs. She went on to say, “In the front of the building where the hair salon is now, were two rooms plus the entrance to go upstairs in one of the rooms, they both had fireplaces with mantels which we were able to salvage.” One room was the waiting room according to Marni, with double pocket doors leading into the reading room.
We moved over to a little man made of forks, made from a company called Forked Up Art which allowed its two inventors pay their way through school according to Marni. “If I don’t like it, if I can’t use it, it’s not going to be in this store,” she said with conviction about what she chooses to carry.
The focal point of the shop is what used to be the summer kitchen of the railway house. Marni explained that a summer kitchen was used in days before air conditioning to cook in an open outside room.
With a background in teaching and owning a kitchen and home goods store, the stove in the summer kitchen was just begging to be used for a demonstration. She expressed that they had done such things in the past and plan again to do classes for people that are interested. “We hope when we get settled in, that we’ll be able to get back and do demo’s and classes.”
In the summer kitchen area of the shop, Marni has a framed postcard from 1960, showing a distant moment in the history of the building. “I had just gotten married and my husband and I were both interested in cooking. Voila! We decided to make the summer kitchen into a kitchen store.”
What keeps Home Essentials’ customer base so loyal? “I think they appreciate the quality of the products and some of these things you can’t get anywhere else.” At the moment, Marni says they are the only local retail carrier for the Wolf small appliance selection in Central Florida other than one in Orlando. She added, “I’ve been educated on how to use them, what the purpose is, what’s the efficiency, why pick this one over that one so you as a customer understand what you’re getting for your money.”
Marni is from Canada originally and moved here in the 1970s. She created and taught stained glass, even opening her own studio. She did so for 20-25 years. In fact, when you pull up to the parking lot of Home Essentials, you’re attention may be drawn to beautiful stained glass windows outside, around the doorway, and even light fixtures within it. Those pieces are all Marni’s creations. The secret to stained glass, she says, is patience.
From my visit to Home Essentials, it was clear that Marni knows and cares about the products she carries and is more than happy to educate her customers during their shopping experience. So, if you’re in the market for anything kitchen-related, do you need any more reasons to shop Home Essentials?
Twenty-five years ago, they bought the building and renovated it for retail downstairs and offices upstairs. Marni and her husband, George, opened a store called Essentials where they sold, “cheeses, pates, real vanilla beans, things you don’t get at regular stores, and it was fun.” They sold dinnerware and cookware, and even had a beer and wine license, not to serve alcohol but to make gift baskets and packages or for dinner parties.
http://homeessentialslakeland.com
In 1995, Marni found out that she was pregnant with twins and they decided to sell the business. For four years she was busy with her kids, but when they were old enough to go to school, she wanted to come back and open the store again.
Address: 325 N Kentucky Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801 Phone: (863) 687-3600
She reopened in 2002, now as Home Essentials, in a building they own across the street from the current location. They expanded at that location to include fine linens and other unique things like Crocs, Life is Good, and more. havenmagazines.com

Haus 820 Laura Helm moved to Lakeland 9 years ago and has since started two grassroots companies in the wedding and event industry. Ashton Events and Haus Management are taking off like wildfire and adding a little something special the community needed.
me on a tour of the stunning space. Haus has the capacity for 500 seated people and has 120 Chiavari chairs, 15 72-inch round tables, 5 8-foot rectangular tables, and 5 5-foot rectangular tables that come with the venue when rented. It has a finishing kitchen that caterers can use during events with a double stacked convection oven, double door fridge, an 800-pound ice machine, and prep tables. Their bar is always finished and ready to go as a serving area. The restrooms were clean, with multiple stalls as to avoid the awful, all too familiar wedding bathroom line you experience at other venues.
Helm started Ashton Events 8 years ago and has since built it into a thriving event planning business. About two years ago, Laura received a call from a friend that had set up a meeting for her with the CRA, a redevelopment agency. “He knew that in my pipeline of dreams for Lakeland, we needed a large-scale event venue,” she said.
Among the exposed rafters, there are oversized pendant lights, which Haus recommends be turned off for events due to their brightness. The market lighting and adorable sconce emergency lights offer the perfect, soft, romantic ambiance for a wedding. Christina remarked, “At night it’s a really sweet, magical spot with the market lighting.”
“I went in just assuming that I was going to be more of a consultant for them- what does the industry need, how do we do this. Instead, they basically said, ‘If you want to make this happen, here’s your opportunity to start an event venue. Tell us what your dreams are and we’ll make those happen.” Laura continued, “For me, with Ashton Events, it was having a floral studio and being able to have an office for collaboration of lots of different creatives in Lakeland.”
Last summer, 2 large projectors that can be displayed on the bare white brick walls were added to the space along with electric blackout shades. “They blend in with the white brick walls, they’re gorgeous if they’re down, but the windows are large and gorgeous if they’re up,” said Christina.
At that point, she had been at Catapult, a community-centered, co-working space in Lakeland for two years and loved the collaborative, creative environment and wanted to cultivate something similar.
A unique feature of the exterior of the building is half of the south side painted in color blocks known as the Mass Market Color Wall, a perfect backdrop for many selfie-seeking passersby.
The meeting where she thought she would be just a consultant to led to, “We’ve got this amazing warehouse space and we need somebody to take the lead and design it and work with Jon Kirk who was the architect,” according to Helm.
If you’d like even more space or a different space for a rehearsal dinner or cocktail hour, Haus’s courtyard, as well as the adjoining Art/ifact space, can be added into the contract as well. Inside The Collective at Mass Market’s offices, there is an available bridal suite. Even that space carries the same modern, simple, unique feel as the main space with a large wooden honeycomb mirror perfect for photos while getting ready.
A little over a year after her conversation with the CRA in March of 2017, Haus 820 opened its doors. Later that year in August, their office space, The Collective at Mass Market opened as well. Laura gives credit to Catapult, the Lakeland CRA, Mayor Bill Mutz, their Mass Market neighbors and the community at large for helping make Haus 820 happen and grow in success.
The in-demand Lakeland venue has events booked all the way into 2020 expressing that Saturdays are the most desired day for brides. When should you book? It’s recommended that you start the venue conversation at least a year a prior to the day. However, according to Christina, “If you do want a short engagement and you don’t care about a specific date, totally possible.”
The name Haus 820 comes from a sign Laura’s grandparents had hanging on their door she remembers from growing up. The sign read “Helm Haus Established 1937.” She loved it for her own sentimental connection as well as the play on words with “house.” She created Haus 820’s tagline reading: “Our Haus, your home.” 820 is the street number in their address, 820 N. Massachusetts Avenue.
What makes the venue a special spot for anyone’s big day? “I know Haus is special because it is a blank canvas, you can make it whatever you want. We are a non-exclusive venue so we like our couples to really customize what they do there because it is their special day or [for] a business, it’s their event.” Christina continued, “I think what makes it special is they really get to customize their package there and turn it into whatever they want, whether that’s rustic or more glamorous. We’ve seen it a thousand different ways and it always looks amazing.”
Laura then began building her Haus Management team. “I knew pretty quickly into the process that we needed somebody that loved sales and understood how to connect with people and was very driven. Christina was the biggest blessing,” Helm said, speaking of her Director of Operations, Christina Johnson.
“I have some brides that will simply throw a piece of greenery up on the rafters for an altar. That’s all they do décor wise because even if you walk in and it’s just as it was before you got there, but has tables and chairs in it, it’s very awe inspiring. It’s very beautiful no matter what,” said Christina.
The Haus 820 building was built in 1924 and was formerly an A&P Grocery store. “You walked in and immediately the rafters were already exposed, you could see the original white brick walls, and we knew its industrial warehouse bones were really good. We wanted to just let it be a blank space,” said Laura.
Haus 820 820 N. Massachusetts Ave., Lakeland, FL 33801
“One of the things for me as an event planner,” continued Laura, “that I appreciate, is walking into a venue knowing that I can infuse personality into it rather than working around style that a venue owner might have already put into a building.”

Haus 820 is more than just a blank canvas for guests to make their own, but the Haus team has seen to every detail ensuring a smooth experience the whole way through. Christina took havenmagazines.com

Valentine’s Day “Staycation” at the Terrace Hotel Instead of stressing out about getting the perfect gift for your Valentine, gift them an experience. A sweet Valentine’s getaway isn’t far from home either. Between the restaurants, bars, and shopping that downtown Lakeland offers and the first-class amenities of the Terrace Hotel, you can take a cozy, romantic staycation right in your backyard. The historic Terrace Hotel was built in 1924, during the building boom of the 1920’s and opened in October of the same year donning the grand Beaux-Arts architectural style popular in the United States from the 1880’s through the 1920’s. The 10-story hotel was one of the three high rise buildings constructed during that “boom” and is considered the city’s first “grand” hotel. The Terrace Hotel boasted many famous guests in its first prime, from musicians, industry leaders, movie stars, athletes, and architects including Frank Sinatra, Henry Ford, Lee Marvin, Bobby Jones, Fred Waring, Wayne King, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Timeshare tycoon David Siegel, whose family was the subject of the documentary The Queen of Versailles, bought the Terrace in 1973. He converted it to a long-term housing facility, which eventually fell into disrepair until being closed in 1986. “By the time we came around to it in the mid-90’s,” said General Manager of the Terrace Hotel, Bruce Dunbar, “it had been acquired by the city of Lakeland and we renovated the entire thing.” Following a major 7-milliondollar restoration, the hotel reopened its doors on February 26, 1999, and has since taken back its place as a landmark and popular place to stay in Lakeland. The hotel’s past is one of its most romantic features. There’s just something about staying in a place that breathed in so much history and reflects the elegance and style of its birth period. During your staycation at the Terrace, you can explore and admire its architecture or drink in the view of Lake Mirror which the hotel overlooks. The hotel offers a total of 88 rooms - 73 luxurious guest rooms and 15 oversized suites. They have accommodations including valet parking, complimentary hotel-wide wifi, complimentary newspaper, a business center, room service, and pet-friendly accommodations in case your dog happens to be the Valentine joining you on your Lakeland staycation. According to the hotel’s manager, they typically put dinner

for two together with a guest room at a deep discount to be bought as a package around this hearts and arrows holiday. On Valentine’s Day, you can either order from the regular menu of the Hotel’s fine dining establishment, the Terrace Grille, or you can order from their special Valentine’s menu. The Valentine’s meal comes with an appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert, and can additionally be paired with a wine. “It’s unique. The dining experiences in the hotel are really absolutely remarkable,” commented Dunbar, adding that it is one of the finest restaurants in Central Florida. The 20 to 25-foot high Pecky Cypress ceilings, large bay windows, chandeliers, and Mezzanine Bar overlooking the dining room make it a singularly special experience. Once you’ve finished your Valentine’s meal for two, you can continue your night on the town in the heart of Lakeland. You and your sweetheart can take a stroll around Munn Park or Lake Mirror for some quiet time to connect or liven up your evening at downtown Lakeland’s many restaurants, bars, and taverns. The Terrace is an especially popular place for weddings, often having 2 to 3 wedding groups in the hotel a week according to Dunbar. Weddings often take place in their Crystal Ballroom. “We do a significant number of weddings outside on Kryger Park right across the street from the hotel. Frequently we do weddings on the loggia down on Lake Mirror and then the reception up on Kryger Park which is really a nice fit,” said Dunbar. There’s nothing more romantic and love-inspiring than seeing an excited wedding party celebrating the night before the big day or catching a peek at a ceremony in Kryger Park. As Valentine’s Day is a busy time for the hotel and the Terrace Grille, it would be prudent to book your staycation soon. You don’t have to go far from home to give your Valentine an unforgettable experience. The Terrace Hotel has the history, accommodations, dining, and location to do it all right in downtown Lakeland.
