LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Happy New Year! Our cover feature this month is about a woman named Joye Murchison Kelly. When she was 19 she took a class by Dr. William Moulton Marston. Little did she know that her final exam would be the key to her future. She went on to collaborate with Dr. Marston and write Wonder Woman comic books in NYC. Her insight into Dr. Marston and the character of Wonder Woman is very interesting. The cover is inspired by an actual comic book that Joye wrote. We meet Jessi Dewert, a tattoo artist with Rock City Tattoo. Zelda Abram went from being an intern at MidFlorida to being the CFO. Whatever Tees is a success story about a “side” job becoming more than that. We hope you’re inspired by all of these brilliant people this month! We hope you will can make it out to Winter Haven on the 27th. The Haight Street Rat from the documentary Saving Banksy will be on view to the public. You can read more about it in our Arts section. Street art is very controversial, but it is here to stay. It’s part of a large movement going on around the world. This month we go out to eat at Tapatio’s Restaurante Mexicano and we visit Solomon’s Castle in our travel section. I wish you peace, love and much laughter in the year to come! Cheers to a happy 2018! Amy Sexson asexson@scmginc.com

Ring In The New

A new corps of city commissioners heavy on business experience but light on government service takes over at City Hall this month. Four first-time office holders means a majority of the seven-member commission will be going through on-thejob training this year. The newbies — Mayor Bill Mutz and Commissioners Michael Dunn, Scott Franklin and Stephanie Madden — join Bill Read (finishing his second year in office) and veteran commissioners Justin Troller and Phillip Walker.

Moving the Monument

In one of their last acts, the 2016-17 City Commission ordered their staff to make plans to move the Confederate monument that has presided over the center of Munn Park for 107 years. That spared the incoming commissioners from having to make the emotionpacked decision, but the new board will be challenged with deciding where to put the monument. The place mentioned most often during three hours of public comments last month was Veterans Park just west of the RP Funding Center.

Dixieland Dining Expands

After bringing high-end Latin cuisine to Dixieland with Nineteen 61, Marcos Fernandez is adding his sophisticated touch to fast-casual dining in the neighborhood. D’Lucas, coming soon to the spot vacated by the popular Fat Maggies and the shortlived Cranes Crossing, will concentrate on carry-out Latino entrees in the $7.50-to$11 range. Fernandez promises customers will get meals within eight minutes of ordering. Or they can specify a pickup time when they order online or phone in.

They’re Giving Us a Wawa

We’re not sure why Wawa convenience stores are so popular, but we know fans will be excited to learn that plans are in the works to bring one to central Lakeland. Wawa is looking at the northwest corner of Memorial Boulevard and Lakeland Hills Boulevard, currently home to a Marathon gas station and property owned by Word Alive Ministries. Their other Lakeland locations are on routes leading out of town on U.S. 98 North and 98 South.

Shades of Cash Feed

Just before demolishing the Lakeland Cash Feed building on Lake Mirror last month, the Lakeland Economic Development Council released plans for a new three-story building on the property with some design touches echoing the 1924 structure. LEDC abandoned its plan to restore the 93-year-old building as the new home for its Catapult small business incubator after Hurricane Irma weakened it, but ultimately decided to incorporate its Catapult plans in a new structure on the property.

Christmas Story: Top Five Finding Food to Jeweler Gains Happy Ending Housing Markets Feed the Hungry a New Owner

A Highline For Lakeland?

Sandy Toledo was distraught when she learned around Thanksgiving that identity thieves had stolen $27,000 from the bank account of her Christmas Angels charity that provides toys for children in need. But when word about the theft spread, donors stepped up with contributions ranging from $5 to $2,000. And by mid-December she got the good news that the money would be returned to the charity’s Bank of America account. “I was hoping for a good ending and it’s coming,” she said.

As plans are being made to bring apartments and townhouses to a now-vacant expanse north of Lake Mirror, some local architects envision an elevated walkway that would connect the new neighborhood with the lake and the downtown area. Steve Boyington, managing partner of WMB-ROI (architecture), is promoting a video that explains the vision for a landscaped walkway that would add development and entertainment option to the eastern side of downtown Lakeland.

So guess what Central Florida city is among the top five housing markets in the U.S.? Lakeland is, according to Realtor.com. The website associated with the National Association of Realtors ranked us fifth in the nation after looking at housing construction, home sales and affordability. What do the top 10 cities have in common? “A lot of these places are more affordable than surrounding areas, yet still have strong economies,” realtor.com economist Danielle Hale said.

Transition in the social service world: An organization called Feeding Tampa Bay said it would fill in after Catholic Charities announced it would shut its Agape Food Bank in Lakeland at the end of 2017. Catholic Charities is shifting its feed-the-hungry efforts to produce-heavy “mission markets.” Agape had served 140 charity agencies in Polk, Bay News 9 reported.

Geo. L. Gaines Jewelers, a downtown Lakeland fixture that’s been owned by the same family for 82 years, is changing hands. But the old owners say new owners Dean and Gina Saunders feel like family to them. Members of the Gaines family will continue working at the Tennessee Avenue store, which will be managed by Gina Saunders. She’s planning plans to restore some of the original features of the 1930s building.

Bringing Wonder Woman to Life

Who would have thought that taking a psychology class at Katharine Gibbs School in NYC would land Joye Hummel a position as the first female journalist to publish stories for Wonder Woman? That is exactly what happened when 19-year-old submitted her final exam on Jan. 25, 1944.

She was in Dr. William Moulton Marston’s class in New York, and says the professor gave the class an exam with questions that dealt with handling one’s domestic and business relationships using the psychology taught in his class. Marston was the brainchild who helped birth Wonder Woman, a scientist credited with the earliest work on the lie detector system and a sought out psychologist with keen insights on human living. “I must have inhaled the course because of how in depth I answered the questions on his final exam,” Joye says. (Over the years, Joye went from her maiden name of Hummel to her first married name, Joye Murchison, then after the death of her first husband, to her second married name, Joye Murchison Kelly.) When she wrote her final exam, which in those days was composition style, “I wrote and wrote, and wrote and wrote, I wrote up and down the sides of it and everything. The person that was looking at the exams first turned it over to him and said this looks like you wrote it. Like Marston had written it. And when he got ahold of that, he had been looking for someone who would understand his psychology, and it was obvious that I understood his psychology,” she says. So Marston got permission from the school to contact Joye for an interview to write Wonder Woman. “He had not found anyone to write Wonder Woman stories to incorporate how he wished his heroine, Wonder Woman, portrayed and who would be able to write his theory into the stories,” she says. “He wanted Wonder Woman to be a positive role model for his young female readers and inspire them to go out into the world and use their abilities.

Wonder Woman is credited with starting the Woman’s Movement. The Wonder Woman movie released in June 2017 hit the box office and various movie lists as among the “top ten” movies of the year. Joye says that her feeling about this movie is that the actress who played Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, was well suited for the role. She says if Dr. Marston were alive, he would be “very happy with her acting” havenmagazines.com

and her alluring quality as well. And the writers did a great job of “telling a story,” she says. However, she did note that the film was set in World War I, and Wonder Woman was not created until World War II. Also, that war was part of the film, she adds that Marston “never felt that war would settle anything, and that it only created more hatred.” Meanwhile, another movie, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” was released in October this year. This film revolves around Marston and his wife, Elizabeth, and what was said by some to be his mistress, Olive Byrne. A story line, which portrays Olive to have fallen in love with both Marston and his wife, develops and alleges that both Marston’s wife and alleged mistress were the inspiration for his Wonder Woman character. Joye says that Marston’s “private life was his private life,” and her interest was strictly in writing Wonder Woman. “Dr. Marston was a very brilliant, kindly man, who really dedicated his life to having a strong women’s role in the world,” she says. Her thought on that film is that, “I have always thought that it was despicable for the sake of making money, to put out information, whether movies, newspapers, etc. that tries to overemphasize a private side that is strongly unconventional.” Joye spoke of Marston’s support for women to be strong leaders in the world, noting “I would like to live long enough to see equal treatment of women in this world.” The story of Joye’s life working with Marston shows that she herself was a woman working in what was considered in those days a man’s world, yet achieving goals and dreams by the effort she put into her careers. She met with Marston and his wife at the Harvard Club in New York shortly before she graduated in March 1944. He hired her to start work right after graduation. The two went over his vision, she says, and he emphasized that he wanted Wonder Woman to be portrayed as “an alluring woman, never masculine, a loving, wise and strong woman who fought evil and promoted goodness.” Taking a break from her conversation with the Haven magazine at her dining room table in Polk County a few weeks ago, she eyes one of her earlier manuscripts, now yellowed from time. “Legend, blazing a trail of death and degradation 20

through the heavens soar a band of air pirates. Hijacking the most valuable metal in the nation, kidnapping the world’s greatest scientist, the ruthless band disappear into a mysterious hideaway. Even the alluring and brilliant Amazon Princess, beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Mercury and stronger than Hercules, must release the full fury of her superhuman strength to halt the brutally nefarious careers of the “Terrors of the Air”! it reads. A couple of years ago, Joye donated much of her memorabilia to the Smithsonian Institute, to be used in their SIL’s Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology. The young 19-year-old had enjoyed working with Marston on the Wonder Woman copy. “It was great fun as our imaginations knew no boundaries. We collaborated with each other on story ideas but then wrote our own scripts. Our scripts had to be very comprehensive, written like a play. The characters, setting, action, background, size of panels, had to be described in great detail to make sure our artist, Harry G. Peter, understood what we wanted depicted,” she says. There was at the time a list of 10 restrictions, she says, that the writers had to obey in writing Wonder Woman. The board who reviewed the copy included such greats as Pearl S. Buck, she noted. The restrictions were assembled by a special Editorial Advisory Board made up of professional people interested in having young readers exposed to stories that would have a positive influence on them and not promote violence as something to be admired, she says. “When both of our scripts were finished, Dr. Marston and I met at the New York office. He checked my finished script to be sure WW was depicted as an admirable heroine and that my story was exciting and incorporated a positive influence. After typing both of our scripts, I delivered them to our editor, Sheldon Mayer,” she adds. Mayer then returned the scripts to their art studio, where they were given to Harry G. Peter, the chief artist, and his assistants to do the art work and then to the staff in charge of lettering. Joye did all the proof reading before they were delivered to the publisher. “It was a wonderful experience working in New York on Wonder Woman. I enjoyed going with Dr. Marston when he was asked to give lectures. We had many luncheons - together to discuss Wonder

Woman stories and ideas. Also he continued giving me what amounted to be a college course in psychology. which helped me not only in writing Wonder Woman stories but in my personal life experiences dealing with people,” she says. “Comics is a very interesting thing to write. When you write a comic strip like Wonder Woman, the way it was written, it is like writing a play. You have what you say in those days, what you write, goes on a big white drawing paper, it has to be ruled like these columns. Double horizontal, triple horizontal, double vertical. “When you write it, you have to tell the artists what kind of panel you want in there, in each illustration, every single thing that you want in that panel. We had professional who did the lettering, with Leroy lettering, so your lettering, your scripts are in there. Every single thing that is in that panel has to be told to the artist, so that they understood,” she says. “And they had to understand what the heck we wanted, and I was there to explain it,” she says as she laughs heavily. “And they were wonderful. I never had a bad day with anybody I worked with, not one bad day.” Here, her present husband, Jack, with whom she just celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary, said, “The difference is, in her day, there was no ego. She was so happy in doing what she did. Today there is so much ego that I have got to be better than somebody else and I have got to be more important. She didn’t have to worry about that. She was it and she loved it.” So as a young journalist now writing for the comic strip that would be known around the world one day, she was given her own office. Joye was responsible for writing comic strips that would get read by children and adults alike.

Tragedy strikes About six months after she began working for Marston, their meetings at the art office stopped and she met with him at his home in Rye, N.Y. “On Aug. 25, 1944, I was with him when he boarded the train to Boston. However, he never walked off the train. He was carried off. He had been stricken with poliomyelitis. This astonished doctors, because he was 55 and considered too old to be afflicted with this disease, commonly called infantile paralysis. Unfortunately, the diagnosis proved to be correct. A planned cruise to Bermuda with my mother was cancelled. I told

my mother that Dr. Marston was hospitalized with a severe arthritis attack and I was needed at work. At that time, many people were stricken by polio and no one knew how it was spread. I believe she would have forced me to stay away from him,” she notes, adding she kept the truth about his disease from her mother. “Dr. Marston was a tall, well-built man and exceedingly strong. At first he did not accept being crippled and pulled on the rings over his bed in the Lenox Hill Hospital room, using so much strength that he almost yanked them out of the ceiling in an attempt to raise himself. It took time for him to adjust to the fact that he was unable to walk,” she says. When Marston was released from the hospital, he was still not able to walk. “From then on, we always worked several days a week or on the weekend at his home, in Rye, New York. I also spent time at the New York office taking care of the usual work I did there. Dr. Marston never went into New York City again.” A nurse came to administer special pain treatments, and although the doctor had advised Marston he would never walk again, he decided to take matters in his own hands, she says, and began exercising regularly to regain his strength. “He was determined to walk again. Unfortunately, it was not to happen,” she says. Just when Marston was starting to take a few steps, tragedy struck again. “I was present at his home when a surgeon removed a lump from under the skin in the middle of his back. The lump later biopsied, was diagnosed with incurable cancer cells that were spreading. Marston did live nine months after this, however, in much pain and he was unable to walk.

After Marston Shortly after she married, she resigned from writing Wonder Woman. “I was fortunate to inherit a darling wee daughter, four and a half, who was definitely in need of a stay at home mother.” And she did stay at home for many years, she notes, raising children. Then when her two sons were in high school, at age 40, she was offered a position as an executive secretary in a stock exchange office in Hollywood, Fla. 21

“I believe Marston would feel proud of me that while working as a secretary, I studied for nine months with the New York Institute of Finance by correspondence, passed the New York Stock Exchange exam and the Chicago Board of trade and became a stockbroker, registered on the New York Stock Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade. It enabled me to help finance the college education for my three children,” she says.

Wonder Woman There is the discussion of the magic lasso. “The magic lasso was not to bind you,” she says. “It was – if you were doing bad things, or very bad things, the magic lasso is just to go around you and make you think how you could turn your bad things that you do against the law, against people, physical, and think about it. And change your ways.”

Wonder Woman’s skirt was shorter than most in those days. “Marston wanted her to be very alluring, very attractive. It didn’t matter about beauty. You can be an alluring person and not have good features, but it is the way you are. The kind of person you are. But the first thing you do is see appearance.” “If you wear your dress just above the knees, knees are not nice looking, but if you show the thigh, it is very alluring. He didn’t want Wonder Woman looking like she was wearing men’s under-drawers.”

Story ideas And at such a tender age, she was responsible for writing comic strips that would get read by children and adults alike. Ideas were everywhere. She and Marston constantly were creating story lines. “The first thing you have to do is get ideas. I took the railroad back and forth. I could see what people were doing, I could see different things. But more than that, we both had tremendous imaginations. From the time I was a young child, I imagined doing stories. I actually wanted to be an actress,” she confesses.

So the stories came out of her head, onto paper. And she wrote all night, every night, at home. This presented issues with her mom, who like most people in those days, slept all night. Here, her husband breaks in: “She had a fascination with atoms,” he says. And there is a Wonder Woman story about atoms, “before the atom bomb,” she notes. “We and one other comic strip were talked to by the government. They wanted to know where we got that idea,” she said. The library was near her, and she studied and was an avid reader of all things science and psychology. “I found out about atoms. I did a synopsis and wrote a story and Marston checked it. Marston and I could get on the same wavelength talking about them. I would have to give him all my ideas and he would ascertain if they were worthy, because he was the first to make the decision on my script. The editor was the final.”

havenmagazines.com

“My theory, which Marston went along with it, is you make a decision, you should think about it, think about the results, and then do it. And if it is working out, then that is a good decision, you stay on that path.” Today, Joye makes her home in Polk County with her husband, Jack Kelly. She thinks back to the days when she was just a teen writing Wonder Woman, and her professional life and accomplishments. Her eyes light up when she thumbs through anthologies that have been

22

assembled since 1944, noting, “They are still publishing my stories.” Wonder Woman is now published by DC Entertainment. Joye lives a quiet life and is known only to her closest friends and family. She loves to go to church, and yes, occasionally goes to Walmart. One time years ago, she went on an outing with a friend of hers, who casually told people who they were spending time with. Soon, she was surrounded by people who wanted her autograph. An original? Yes. She lived before, during and after the women’s movement. One time, she even addressed a boss (after Wonder Woman) about how everyone had gotten raises except her. So she waited until everyone left for the day, spoke to her boss, who then gave her a $400 bonus. “You can do anything you put your mind to,” she said. She went home to her husband, took him into the bedroom, closed the door and tossed $400 worth of cash all over her bed and said, “This is what your wife did today.”

ARTS WORDS Amy Sexson

“People either love me, hate me, or they really don’t care.” -Banksy When does vandalism become art? Street Art and Graffiti Art have a long and controversial past. They are different from each other, however they share some of the same roots of political unrest. Artists are willing to risk jail or even death to get their message out. What began as spray painting on the side of a train or a building has become a global art movement that is making big headlines and art collectors very wealthy.

Graffiti art is more word-based, meaning the artist’s tag name is the art. It’s all about typography and style. Street art is more image-based, most likely created by a trained artist. The image will usually have a message relevant to the times that the public can relate to. It’s almost always located in a high traffic area and will most-likely end up being painted over at the building owner’s expense. Sometimes street art has been commissioned, in other words, they have permission to paint. We see murals painted around Central Florida, and they are generally accepted by the residents. What about when they aren’t given permission? It has become standard practice for famous street artists to have their piece stolen within hours of painting it. Entire walls are cut down and sold at high-end auction houses for millions of dollars, and the artist will see none of that money. It’s the artist’s intentions for the art to be seen by the general public for free. By the nature of it, it’s supposed to be temporary, too. So when does vandalism become something more? At what point does it become art? According to Brian Greif, an art collector from Nashville and Executive Producer of Saving Banksy, “It is both vandalism and art. That’s what makes this art so interesting. Artists in the Street Art and Graffiti genres risk arrest and even death to put their work out their for the public. I don’t know many art forms where artists have been jailed or killed doing their art. In LA, a graffiti artist named Psych went to jail for eight years. There are several artists who have died doing the art. Skate One, Nexst and Robbo are just a few of the prominent artists who died actually painting in the streets.”

The most famous street artist in the world is Banksy. And that’s where the Haight Street Rat painted in San Francisco in April, 2010 comes in. Banksy had spent some time in San Francisco explained Greif. “I was heavily involved in the street art scene in San Francisco. When Banksy came in 2010, I saw the tremendous public reaction to the paintings he did each night. Banksy was in SF for about 10-days. He did one painting each night. Every morning people would scramble to see the new Banksy. It was disappointing to see the pieces get painted over or tagged within a few days. I decided to try to save at least one of the paintings so it could be shared with the public. Banksy is

undoubtedly the most famous artist in the Street Art movement. His most iconic symbol is the Rat. In my opinion there is significant historical significance to the Haight Street Rat and it needed to be preserved.” Greif believes Street Art and Graffiti are very important art movements, part of a larger, global movement. “Because these paintings have been done illegally, they are destroyed quickly. I believe it is important to save key public pieces from this movement. Not everything can or should be saved, but iconic pieces by the top artists in these genres must be preserved.” Negotiations with the building’s owner began. Greif wanted to get the painting down and donate it to a museum rather than have it destroyed. The owners were running out of time and were faced with paying a fine if they didn’t paint over it. (Until 2014, SF had a “Graffiti Fine” to be paid by the owner of the building if the graffiti wasn’t removed in a timely fashion.) After many months, they agreed on a deal and Greif started the removal process. The wall was taken down, board by board and stored in Greif’s house while looking for a permanent home. Unfortunately, museums weren’t interested in taking it because it was only authenticated on Banksy’s website, not in person. The SF MOMA also felt that some street artist’s intent is to have their art destroyed or not survive for very long. They wouldn’t want to keep anything against an artist’s wishes. Why does Banksy keep himself a secret? Greif was offered $200,000 after he initially took the Haight Street Rat down. Banksy could be profiting millions of dollars if he wanted. Greif explains why Banksy stays hidden, “At first he needed to guard his identity because the police had made him their number one target for prosecution. Over time, as he became an international sensation, it became about simply not wanting the after effects of ‘celebrity status.’ I have not met Banksy, but friends and contacts who know him say he just wants to paint and do his work on his own terms and doesn’t want the hassles that come with being a celebrity.” I asked Greif if he knew Banksy’s real name. “I do not know who he is. I do know that he is not the guy from Massive Attack. I do know he is a real individual (not a collective). Other than that, I have no idea,” he said. Greif is referring to a rumor that a band member from the Bristol, England band, Massive Attack was the 29

real Banksy. Paintings supposedly showed up in the same cities wherever the band happened to be touring. Banksy is also rumored to be from Bristol. Greif talks about the future for the Haight Street Rat after it leaves Winter Haven. “We have not found a permanent home yet. I haven’t had a serious museum inquiry since Saving Banksy was released. We will continue to do the traveling exhibit. It’s been extremely gratifying to show the painting at places like the public library in Kokomo, Indiana. Over 1,500 people showed up the first night, people of all ages. In Windsor Canada, the exhibit venue curated a show of art from ten Windsor area artists. The artists sold art at the exhibit and it was a great showcase for them. I might be wrong, but I feel like the traveling exhibits are doing a lot to help raise awareness and generate positive discussion about Street Art and Graffiti.” Greif has been offered $1.7 Million for the Haight Street Rat, he’s not selling. No Ball Games - a painting Banksy did for the London Olympics was sold at auction for $1.2 Million. Flower Girl sold at auction for $209,000. Kissing Coppers sold at auction for $575,000. Slave Labor sold at auction for $1.1 million. “The irony of Bansky street art is this; here’s a guy with one and he wants to donate it to a museum and they don’t want to take it. Yet, someone’s prepared to buy it for a half million dollars. That’s the beauty of street art.” -Ben Eine Street art is controversial. The artists don’t always have permission to do what they do. They want to create art in public places so that the general public can see it. Not everyone will go to a gallery show, but everyone can see it if it’s painted on a wall downtown. They want to create something with a message, that evokes thought, gets people talking. What do you think? To learn more about the Haight Street Rat coming to Winter Haven on January 27th, watch Saving Banksy on Netflix or itunes. Visit www.banksy.co.uk to see more of the artist’s work.

Copper Tree Beads Is there anything more fun than creating something all your own and getting to add it to your wardrobe? Or gifting a handmade piece of jewelry to a friend? Copper Tree Beads in Lakeland provides that experience and then some. A jewelry design studio and gift store, you can pick up the supplies you need to create your own statement piece or shop for beautiful gifts that are already made.

Aside from gifts, men’s gift items, finished jewelry, crystals, repairs, and supplies, Copper Tree Beads also has unique items like Chakra stones, Batik sarongs handmade in Bali, materials from Nepal and Africa, and vintage pieces that can be reimagined. Looking to learn the craft or find new methods of creating jewelry? They offer classes for both jewelry aficionados and novices.

Copper Tree Beads owner, Kristine Robertson fell in love with jewelrymaking when her sister, Michelle Hopkins, started taking classes at Yia Yia’s Beads and Gifts in Lakeland. Her sister showed her how to do it and Kristine was immediately HOOKED. When Yia Yia’s came up for sale, the pair acquired it and have been going strong for 14 years.

Their classes start with the basics–a simple bracelet or earring, “Those are your two skills that you need to get going and move into other things,” says Kristine about the introductory 30-minute classes. They also scale into advanced classes doing projects like using basket weaves to weave wire and other projects which can last up to three hours.

“We stayed with (the name) ‘Yai Yai’s Beads’ when we bought the shop because it had been an existing shop. In 2010, I moved it to Siesta Key,” Kristine explained. With confusion on the name due to its Greek origins, a common term for ‘grandmother’ and the many international tourists in the area, they decided to change the name to The Siesta Key Bead Shack. Two years ago, they decided to open a second location in Lakeland and the name changed to Copper Tree Beads. “I love copper, I work a lot with copper. We do a lot with Tree of Life and different trees and stuff, so I just kind of combined the names. It just kind of fit,” said Kristine.

An important thing to note about Kristine and Michelle’s shop is their commitment to bettering the world through buying fair trade. From a line of hand pressed glass from the Czech Republic to clay beads called Kazuri beads that allow women to support their villages and families, Copper Tree Beads buys fair trade whenever they can, contributing to fair labor, fair wages, and good working conditions.

fairly, especially women–women looking out for other women.” So, you want to create jewelry, where do you start? Kristine tells her customers to come in with an idea, a color, or even a photo they found on Pinterest or Instagram. “I think a lot of people, when they first walk in and see beads, think they can’t do it, but this is kind of like paint your own pottery or Painting with a Twist, you don’t have to be creative, you don’t have to know what you’re doing–just know what you like.” If you’re trepidatious about trying your hand at making jewelry alone, are in need of a girl’s night out, or want a different setting for a birthday– throw a party! Copper Tree Beads is available for parties which means you can bring a carafe of coffee or pop open a few bottles of wine, pick up some goodies to snack on, and unleash your creative spirit with your friends. The Lakeland community and CTB’s loyal customers embraced their move back to downtown, and their pretty happy about it themselves, saying, “Being downtown really makes you feel like part of the community I think because there are so many downtown events between the Farmer’s Market and First Fridays, it really makes you feel like more a part of something.”

Kristine explains why buying fair trade is important to her, “Anytime that you can do good in the world, and you know that you’re buying from someone where their living conditions are fair and they’re being treated

The Imperial Symphony Orchestra Presents: Gianni Schicchi The Imperial Symphony Orchestra, celebrating its 52nd season, is bringing a night at the opera to Lakeland! The ISO, in collaboration with Florida Southern College is presenting, Gianni Schicchi for one night only on January 20th at 7 p.m. This comedic opera marries the fantastical elements of acting, singing, and the sweet music of the orchestra to tell Puccini’s tale of the death of wealthy aristocrat Buoso Donati and his family’s plot to inherit his fortune after hearing he has left it all to the monastery. I spoke with Imperial Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Amy Wiggins about the orchestra’s origins. Formed as a community volunteer orchestra in 1965, the ISO has grown over the years. In 2016, it became a semi-professional orchestra paying all its orchestra members. Currently 48 members strong, Amy spoke on the past, saying, “It’s come a long way from 30 folks in 1965 to where it is today.” In January 2002, Madame Butterfly, was the first opera put on by the ISO, the idea of Greg Sale, a longtime supporter and once a member of the ISO and wife Christina, an opera singer. “The ISO is one of the few orchestras that puts on an opera,” said Wiggins. “They [Greg and Christina Sale] wanted to make this happen and through their contacts, they were able to bring down professional opera singers from New York and Philadelphia and across the

country and the world. They were able to sing alongside students here at Florida Southern College and other community singers, including folks from Lakeland Choral Society.”

Amy says some audience members may not realize is that there are no microphones or sound system. When someone sings from the stage, their voice is being projected all the way to the back of the theater through sheer talent and training. She commented, “Not only is it graceful and lovely to hear, but it’s also very athletic to be able to make that sound go all the way to the back of the theater. It requires a great deal of skill and a great deal of stamina as well.”

James Caraher, former conductor of the Indianapolis Opera, comes down every year to conduct the opera says Wiggins. The performance will have between 32 and 36 ISO orchestra members, reduced from their 48-person orchestra to be able to fit into the pit.

A convivial experience for the orchestra, performers, and audience alike, Amy describes it saying, “It’s the orchestra and the actors and the lights and the scenery all working together to transport the audience into the setting. Everyone who is there will feel as though they’re in Buoso Donati’s bedroom and experiencing what the family members are experiencing as they’re learning of his death, and what he’s done to leave all of his fortune to the church, and how can they get that back.”

“In May, the Opera Comity held auditions in New York City as well as here in Lakeland and hired our 4 leads for the production,” explained Wiggins, discussing the casting. One of the four leads is a former FSC alumnus and 2 former Florida Southern students in supporting roles, with all 3 of those students currently in graduate school pursuing advanced degrees in Opera Performance, according to Amy Wiggins. Discussing the benefits of the FSC and ISO collaboration, Amy said, “The students at Florida Southern are able to not only perform, but also work behind the scenes to understand staging and direction and how to pull a fully staged opera together, which is not an easy job. And, they’ll also get to learn from the professionals who come in from out of town.”

We ended our conversation discussing the economic impact of the arts and how Polk County is able to foster so much culture with Amy thoughtfully remarking, “One of the reasons we have such a tremendous arts and culture scene is because we have such amazing philanthropists. We’ve had visionary folks throughout the years and for the ISO starting in 1965, folks who started the orchestra felt like that’s what the community needed. They didn’t just want to get together

The splendor of all the components of an opera show working together is a remarkable thing. One thing that

and play music with their friends, but they understood that a community’s sense of place is really guided by its connection to arts and culture. So many organizations have been started like that, through not only generosity of dollars, but generosity of time and generosity of vision.” To find out more about The Imperial Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Gianni Schicchi or to purchase tickets, visit www.lakelandopera.com or call the ISO at (863) 688-3743.

Tapatio’s Restaurante Mexicano If I’m honest, I’m always a bit skeptical when I see the word ‘authentic’ being touted by a restaurant. Often times, not always, the meaning of that word is lost in translation of both menu items and flavor of the food. Not the case with Tapatio’s in Lakeland, they are the real deal, delivering on their ‘authentic’ promise.

“We have over a hundred items on the menu and if I was asked to remove one item on the menu, I wouldn’t know which one to remove,” said Sandra, expressing the quality of all the restaurant’s dishes. Tapatio’s has two locations, on Memorial Blvd. and on South Florida Ave., both in Lakeland. When I went for lunch to their Memorial Blvd. location on an overcast Thursday afternoon, the parking lot was packed. I sat in my car for a moment watching as cars would pull out only for the space to be filled promptly afterward. It was clear this is a favorite lunch spot for many.

Twenty-three years ago, Tapatio’s was started by Jesus Vargas, according to his brother’s wife, Sandra Vargas. Sandra and her husband Rene joined the venture not long after. “My husband and I came along to the business a year after, when another partner left,” said Sandra.

Walking into the door, the smell of sizzling meats and vegetables and warm tortillas filled the air. The atmosphere was pleasant, full of chatting patrons enjoying their meals. The walls were adorned with colorful murals depicting Mexican landscape, people, and culture. Awnings over some of the booths were furnished with Spanish tile and mariachi music played through the speakers, conveying a true cantina feel.

If you visit their website to browse the menu before a trip to Tapatio’s, you’ll see the words ‘Auténtico Mexicano Cuisine’ across the top of the screen, and auténtico they are. Cooking is rooted in their family tradition with the Vargas brothers’ parents having run a restaurant in Mexico. “Their mom and dad use to have a restaurant in Mexico and the whole family use to run it. My husband would do dishes, the older sisters would help with the cooking, others will serve,” explained Sandra.

I took my seat and the waitress brought out a basket of warm tortilla chips and two carafes–one filled with mild and one hot salsa. The mild was very tasty, but the hot had quite an enjoyable kick to it, if you are a lover of spicy food.

Even their name pays homage to their Mexican culture. “Tapatio’s is actually made out of two words– ‘Tapa’ meaning top and ‘Tilo’ meaning uncle. It’s the oldest member of a generation which also means respect to the older,” explainED Sandra. “It’s actually a nickname given to the people from our home state, Jalisco in Mexico. It is very common to hear women being called ‘Tapatias’ and men are called ‘Tapatios.’”

Chicken fajitas were calling my name as I skimmed the menu. They came out, piping hot, smelling amazing. The chicken was incredibly well seasoned and carried a refreshing hint of lime, tossed with delicious peppers and onions. Also on the plate were other fajita toppings and accompaniments–lettuce, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, refried beans topped with melted cheese and rice. The tortillas came on a separate plate wrapped in foil to keep them hot. I assembled my fajitas, topped them with a bit of hot salsa and devoured them!

With seemingly endless menu items to choose from, they have all the usual suspects–tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, along with an assortment of other delicious Mexican dishes with most of the recipes passed down from Sandra’s mother-in-law.

32

Sandra gives credit to the quality and freshness of food, good service, fair prices, and the friendly staff at Tapatio’s for keeping customers coming through the door, adding, “We try to treat others with respect as we would want to be treated.” The restaurant delivered on all those things, along with their promise of ‘Auténtico Mexicano Cuisine’ and will be getting my business again! 734 East Memorial Blvd. Lakeland, FL 33801 (863) 686-6958 Tue-Thur 11am-9pm Fri & Sat 11am-10pm Sun 10am-9pm Closed Mon 6645 S. Jessi Dewert

Originally from New York, Jessi Dewert moved to Florida when she was four. She has moved all over the state from Valrico, Brandon, Mulberry to Zephyrhills, even moving to Texas for a time. Jessi moved back to Lakeland where she has lived for the last 5 years.

for certain styles than others. I think Florida is really popular for more traditional tattoos,” she described. “I also do a lot of Neo-Traditional which is similar to Traditional, but with more colors,” she continued, “Neo-Traditional can be closer to Realism or it can be closer to Traditional, it’s just a really wide-range style.”

“I was always really big into art since I was a little bitty kid and I knew that was something I wanted to incorporate into a career, I just wasn’t sure how,” explained Jessi, now 22. She first became interested in the tattoo industry at age 16 when she was living in a small town and met a tattoo artist. After researching it as a career possibility, she found that the proper avenue was to put together a portfolio of artwork and take it into different shops seeking an apprenticeship. Her apprenticeship began at Rock City Tattoo under artist Joshua Greener. “You clean, you answer phones, it’s like an internship almost. You shadow them, you watch them, and you go from there,” she said.

Dewert has advice for artists looking to break into the industry, saying, “Do it the right way.” She elaborated that it’s important to put together a portfolio, seek apprenticeship, do research on the industry and the shop you want to apprentice under, saying, “The more you know going in, the better it’s going to be for you.” Jessi places importance on following other artists as well, some of her favorites being, Teresa Sharpe, Timmy B, and Steve Compton.

Both milestones, Jessi remembers her getting her first tattoo and the first tattoo she ever gave. “The first tattoo I ever got was just a solid black pagan symbol. It’s a symbol for goddess.” The first tattoo she ever did was a tribal eagle, something a client requested.

With her vision set on growing as an artist in the future, Jessi says, “There are people who want to specialize in one style and they just want to work on that and build on that, really growing that one style. I’d really like to be able to do all different styles and I want to be really good in multiple styles, that way I can reach more people.”

With pop culture and television embracing the tattoo industry, most people are familiar with shows such as L.A. Ink, featuring predominant artist and shop owner, Kat Von D. With Kat Von D, a well-respected female artist dominating tattoo television, I wondered if that was the experience of all women tattoo artists. Jessi explained that women like Kat Von D have worked incredibly hard to gain the respect they hold. Tattooing is still a very male-dominated world according to Jessi, and it can be hard to be a female tattoo artist because some of them still look at women like they shouldn’t be in the industry.

An appreciation for the shop that gave her her first apprenticeship also keeps her goals revolved around Rock City Tattoo. “I’ve been there for three years and I want it to succeed.” tattoosbyjessi@gmail.com (813) 922-9716 Facebook @tattoosbyjessi Instagram @jessi_dewert

“There have been times where people have seen my portfolio on the table and they’re like ‘Oh, I want to speak to this artist,’ and then when they find out I’m a woman, they want to speak to a male,” she said. Though there are struggles to being a female in the tattoo industry, Jessi allows it to motivate her, working to earn the respect of her peers, saying, “I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” As all artists evolve, I asked Jessi what her journey to her current style has been like. “I started off really liking New School, which is over exaggerated, cartoonish kind of styles. I still really enjoy it, but certain areas, I’ve noticed, are more popular

Zelda Abram From intern to CFO When she’s not working, Zelda said that she loves to read novels, though she hasn’t been able to read as much as she’d like recently. She has also taken to running, as a way to stay active and keep stress down. Though she’s done several half marathons and 5K’s, Zelda has a goal to one day run a full marathon.

One of 6 kids, Zelda Abram was born in the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix in the Caribbean. Her parents are originally from St. Lucia before moving to St. Croix where they started their family. They moved to Florida when Zelda was only 7 years old. The family came from St. Croix to Auburndale, moving and settling in Lakeland when she was 12.

Until then, this Lakeland island-girl with the tenacity to work her way from intern to CFO is focused on getting her kids through college. “I would love to go to Ireland one day, just somewhere where I can see the Northern Lights. That’s the one thing on my list.”

“I’m from the Islands. I still consider myself to be an island girl. My parents are from the Caribbean and a lot of people don’t know that,” she explained. Her husband is from here, however, sometimes Abrams wants to go back and stick her feet in the water. “I like the sound of the ocean. It’s just more of a relaxing atmosphere. If I had my way, I’d go there for vacation every year.” Though she’s a self-proclaimed island girl at heart, Zelda loves the Lakeland community, saying, “It’s big enough where there are things to do, but not so big that you get lost in a big city. I kind of like the small-town feel,” she finished her thought, “I think it’s a good place to raise a family.” Zelda majored in accounting at Florida Southern College and was a senior when MidFlorida Federal Credit Union was advertising for an intern position in their accounting department. “I applied and started working here and just really became interested in the accounting aspect of the credit union.” She says citing the numbers and analysis part of the job really peaked her interest. As an intern, Zelda was encouraged to learn everything she could about the accounting department at MidFlorida. “Opportunities have just presented themselves. After I graduated, they brought me on full time. There were some different shifts in the organization and I was able to be promoted to department manager,” she explained, climbing her way through the ranks to eventually land her current position. From intern to CFO–this is a feel-good, hard-working tale of professional motivation if ever there was one. When I expressed this sentiment to Zelda she said, “You know, MidFlorida is a feel-good place to work. They are a very familyoriented organization. Although we’ve grown so much since I started working here, I think that’s what has been important to our culture. You are a part of the family, part of the team, and if you want it, the opportunity is there for you.” She discussed what she loves about her job saying, “When you’re on the accounting side you can see what triggers growth, what drives profitability for the organization. Just being able to look at that, and understand what we’re doing and how we’re growing, is what I love.”

Whatever Tees

“Screen printing is a whole lot more. I print the artwork out on this film, a transparency film, and then I give it to him and he does all these magical things and then it’s on a shirt,” Marcella said light-heartedly, giving the floor to Tim to explain the screen printing process.

Husband and wife Tim and Marcella Benton, met when Tim was working for a screen printer. “Right after we got married, I decided to start a business for a couple extra bucks,” he continued, “It just got bigger and bigger and then I had to quit my job. A year to a year and a half later, she had to quit her job to do the embroidery now.”

“All the colors are separated, they’re all black film, black artwork, light exposes it for a certain amount of time, water then shoots it out of the screen,” Tim explained, describing the screen as similar to a porch screen, only finer. “You burn that image with a light, through emulsions coded on a screen and once that’s dry, you tape it up and set it up on a machine that aligns up each color to a palette. Once the shirt is printed there’s a dryer that has to reach a certain amount of degrees for a certain amount of time. Once it comes off the end of that, it’s washable, ready to wear.”

A pair of young entrepreneurs wanting a side stream of income, blossomed their side hustle into a full-blown business through screen printing and embroidering designs for garments and other items–that’s creativity. Marcella and Tim have since had to move their business out of their one-car garage and into a 1,000-square foot space that they are quickly outgrowing. The duo even works nights and weekends to keep up with the demand and have hired their first employee. Tim said, “I don’t think we can stop it. We’re going to have to move eventually, we’ll have to have more machinery, more people.”

Though the work speaks for itself along with their happy customers, the community has done their part to support the budding business. Community members and customers that are familiar with their quality of work sing the praises of Whatever Tees through good old fashioned word of mouth. Marcella added, “Since we’ve joined the Chamber and the Lakeland Business Leaders, I’ve really noticed it since then. I’ll get all these notifications on Facebook [of people recommending us].”

At first, their business was called “Perfect Prints.” The pair wanted something with a bit more personality, “A bit more humor, a more interesting sounding name,” explained Marcella. They were brainstorming and ordered Chinese food while they thought. Tim explained with a smile, “The fortune cookie said, ‘you will succeed at whatever’ so we said, how about ‘Whatever Tees?’” The name applies not only to their happenstance fortune cookie, but also to their philosophy regarding customers. They are dedicated to doing whatever their customers want.

What advice do the Benton’s have for other creative entrepreneurs? Marcella ascribes their success and growth saying, “Growing slowly like that, you’re not immediately overwhelmed.” Tim’s response– “Do it.” He told the story of how he got up one morning, knew how much he needed to get his business off the ground, cleaned himself up, and went to the bank to get a loan. That one decision to “do it,” has put them where they are today with a successful business bursting at the seams.

Whatever Tees can do screen printing and embroidery on an array of items from hats, tees, hoodies, bags, towels, koozies, promotional items for restaurants, businesses, and teams. Marcella does all the artwork at Whatever Tees and can help customers materialize their ideas. After starting the business and getting the equipment they needed, she had to quickly learn on her own how to design the customer’s concepts on the computer.

www.whatever-tees.com Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram: @whatevertees (863) 370-0740

The embroidery machine they use is the only commercial sized embroidery machine made in America. When they purchased it for their business, the pair flew out to California to receive training on it. The couple took me through the process of creating their products. For the embroidery, Marcella creates vector artwork on the computer and then has it digitized out of house. She’ll do a sample to assure nothing is messed up, if the sample comes out free of errors, she loads it into the computer where it finishes the process.

Solomon’s Castle: A Visionary’s Legacy Solomon’s Castle is one man’s masterpiece, tucked amongst the orange trees and pastures in Ona, Florida. Howard Solomon, who unfortunately passed away in August of 2016, was a true creative with an imagination overflowing into everything he did. Alane Solomon, Howard’s daughter, reminisced about him. “I got to see him every day in a beautiful setting. It’s like he created this whole kingdom for us.” Luckily for the public, Howard Solomon opened his kingdom to the community for everyone to experience. Born in 1935 in Rochester, New York, Howard Solomon moved to St. Petersburg in 1955. He had a cabinet shop and worked as a boat builder, eventually moving to Freeport in the Bahamas where he lived for 7 years doing interior design for nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels. According to his daughter, he owned several galleries in the Bahamas and Miami, had shows in New York City, and has pieces all over the country and the world. “He moved here in 1970 with the hopes of building a studio and a workshop and a home so that he could be centrally located,” Alane explained. She continued, “Once he bought the property, he realized there wasn’t a lot of room to build out so he started building up and because he’s an artist, some of his artistic flair fell over into the architecture and he decided to build a castle.” The tours started after speaking at the Kiwanis Club through the urging of some local community members that were curious about the newcomer. He explained who he was, brought some sculptures, and explained what he was doing. They asked if they could come out to see the project. To that, he suggested they come out the last Sunday of the month. He forgot what he told them and when they showed up that day, he gave an impromptu tour. The next month on the last Sunday, they came again. For the next 12 years, he gave free tours. Alane spoke about her childhood on the premises saying, “I thought that everybody’s dad made stuff. At that age, I had no clue how talented he was. He was definitely my hero.” This beautiful property boasts the main attraction, his castle. Solomon estimated it to be about 10,000 square-feet with a restaurant called “The Boat in the Moat,” a lighthouse, a replica facade of the Alamo, and more. I took a tour of the castle with a group of other guests eager to see what it held. The silver tiles lining the façade of the castle are actually aluminum printing plates from the local Wauchula newspaper, The Harold Advocate. “The print side is on the inside, so technically it’s a time capsule. You could peel them all off and read old news,” remarked Alane. Another aspect of note is the 90 pieces of stained glass that can be seen in the different buildings on the property–all made by Howard. The approximate 40-minute tour takes visitors through the galleries and home of Howard Solomon, going through the castle, boat, and ending at the lighthouse. Cindy, our tour guide for the day described Solomon as, “The Da Vinci of debris, the Rembrandt of reclamation, the wizard of odds and ends, and the savior of salvage.” When I spoke with her, she explained that she had been with Solomon’s Castle for 8 years saying, “I loved him, I love this place.” Throughout the tour, Cindy showed us stunning pieces of Solomon’s work made from carburetors, gas tanks, oil drums, beer can bottoms, coat hangers and other recycled materials. He made everything from people, creatures–real and imaginary, boats, cars and beyond. havenmagazines.com

Cindy didn’t just run through the motions, she performed the tour that Solomon himself wrote the script for. It was honestly funny. The jokes were smart, not pretentious, but a sophisticated type of humor that resonated with everyone in the room getting more than just a chuckle or two. I spoke with another visitor on the tour, Linda Dube, who has been to the castle 3 times, saying, “Every time I come, I seem to see something different and I have more of an appreciation for him, for what he’s done.” The sheer volume of subjects that Solomon covered had Linda in amazement saying, “It’s not just cars, it’s not just metal, it’s wood, it’s everything. He fascinates me.” We made our way, jaws gaped in awe of his work throughout the castle. As we exited, Cindy pointed out the Blue Moon Room in the east wing that can be rented which includes a 500 square foot kitchenette, can sleep two, comes with a continental breakfast, and has air conditioning, Dish TV, and high-speed internet. Making our way through the boat, Cindy explained that it was a staggering 65 feet, three-quarters the size of the Santa Maria and was made from recycled wood. Every aspect of the tour, from the castle’s architecture, the boat, his artwork within, and even the humorous descriptions of his pieces given by the tour guide had Howard’s fingerprints. The walkthrough felt like getting a glimpse inside the mind of this artistic genius. Before I left, I stopped by the Boat in the Moat for a bite to eat with Alane. The menu contained a variety of salads, sandwiches, and other hot dishes. I was torn between the Reuben and the chicken pot pie. Everything at the restaurant is homemade according to Alane, adding, “A lot of the recipes were my grandmother’s.” Famous for their desserts, Alane remarked, “People come back for our walnut pie or they come and get a full apple crisp to take home to their family.” I decided on the Reuben with a side of spinach casserole, chips, and a drink. Everything was divine! The restaurant and atmosphere alone are worth a trip. An adventure worth taking whether alone or with your family, you’re bound to come away having gained something–a full stomach from The Boat in the Moat, peace and quiet in an idyllic setting, or an appreciation for the creative legacy that Howard Solomon left his family and the visitors of his timeless castle.
