Polk’s First Disc Golf Course Opens

Star-struck Lakeland residents waited in the June heat for a chance to glimpse “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston when he was here in late June for the filming of Walt Disney Pictures’ “The One and Only Ivan.” Crews shot at four Lakeland locales, including Southgate Shopping Center, which was briefly transformed into the 1990s-era Big Top Mall and Video Arcade.

When our last issue came out a month ago, home delivery wasn’t available to Publix shoppers in Lakeland. Now consumers have two choices: Publix Delivery by Instacart or Target-owned Shipt. Expect to pay slightly more than in the store when ordering through either company. In adddition, Shipt charges an annual membership fee; Instacart relies on delivery fees. Tipping is optional.

Restaurants are sprouting on or near the Florida Avenue/U.S. 98 strip that bisects Lakeland. Two are locally owned: D’Lucas, the fast-casual sister to Dixieland’s upscale Nineteen 61, and Federal Bar, a bar (duh) and restaurant in downtown’s historic Federal building. New chain outlets include Mission BBQ, Ford’s Garage and the not-yet-open Fuzzy’s Taco Shop.

After Jim Studiale retired as the long-time director of the city of Lakeland’s Community Development department, city leaders looked for a successor who they hope will soften the agency’s reputation for regulatory nitpickiness and strengthen its economic development focus. They hired Nicole Travis, 36, who was promoted to the $128k job from director of the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency.

Loyce Harpe Park was already locally famous for its bonecrunching mountain bike trail, expansive dog park and entrance to the new Se7en Wetlands nature preserve. Now it has another distinction: It’s home to Polk County’s first disc golf course. Players toss Frisbee-like plastic saucers toward chain-link baskets on the 18-hole loop.

No Ban On Backpacks In Polk Schools

Oakbridge Is Growing To the South

Lakeland Electric Cultural History Looking at a Center Idea Rate Hike Transforms

When Ra’chel Saintfort lost 121 pounds, she didn’t know she would gain national exposure for her budding singing career. The 32-year-old Lakeland mom was pictured on the cover of People in a promo for an article about her determination to slim down. Since then, she’s been featured on Inside Edition, Good Morning America and a host of lifestyle websites.

After tragic school shootings in Florida and Texas, Polk County got national exposure for its program to place armed guardians in public schools. Families were directly affected when Polk schools banned backpacks during the last week of classes. So it was probably a relief for most parents when the school district announced in June that the backpack ban would not extend to next school year.

The Oakbridge development on both sides of Harden Boulevard north of the Polk Parkway is about to grow to the south. An update to owner Drummond Corp.’s development plan clears the way for shopping, houses and apartments on nowvacant land south of the parkway and east of Harden. Drummond is paying the city of Lakeland $111,100 for traffic improvements.

It looks like Lakeland Electric bills will be going up slightly. The utility’s managers are proposing an increase in the base rate that will cost an average customer about $2.50 more each month. The base rate pays for facility improvements and operating costs, but not fuel. The final decision on the rate will be made by the City Commission. Learn more at lakelandelectric. com/baserate.

City Commissioner Phillip Walker’s idea for an African American cultural history center in Lakeland morphed into a center representing multiple cultural histories once his fellow commissioners discussed it. A motion to have the city staff explore locations for a center representing multiple ethnicities passed 4-2, with Walker and Stephanie Madden dissenting. Said Madden about Walker: “I feel like we’ve hijacked his heart and what he brought up.”

Looking Good Local It’s a simple thing that can make a huge difference. We’re lucky to live in an area with so many independently-owned boutiques. They’re a great place to get a new outfit, new shoes or a new piece of jewelry. It not only makes you feel good, but it’s good for the community. Shopping small helps keep the boutiques in business. That keeps the character in our neighborhoods unique! In turn, people stay employed, money stays local and improves our city. As a bonus, when you shop at a small business, you get to know the owner and that’s a major plus. They can tell you every single thing in the store, what size it is, where it’s from and what other colors it might be offered in. You might pay a little more for something, but if you love it, and you love the feeling when you put it on, it’s totally worth it. We hope you enjoy the looks we’ve we’ve styled from boutiques in Polk County. Thank you to all of them for allowing us to explore and put some looks together! Go out and visit them, I promise that you’ll find your new “favorite.” Model: Nicole Doyle Hair & makeup: Ella Sexson Styled: Amy Sexson, Tara Crutchfield, Ella Sexson Photographs: Amy Sexson

Thurston Comprehensive Dental Center Making oral health a priority and helping to give people dazzling smiles, Dr. Frederick D. Thurston has been an asset to the community of Auburndale since opening his practice in 1980. Currently serving patients with three skilled dentists, joining Dr. Thurston are Dr. Ela Torres- Moore, and Dr. Parker Duke, according to Barbara Scott, the practice manager. Having multiple dentists has allowed the practice to cover a wide array of services according to Scott, remarking, “We can handle dental emergencies, routine and periodontal care, Implants, Dentures, Cosmetics, Invisalign, Botox. With our onsite laboratory same day repairs and relines are also available.” The office is open Monday - Thursday 7:30 - 5:00 and Fridays 8:00 - 3:00. One area that Thurston especially prides themselves on is their adaptability to new and emerging technology in their field. They embrace any changes that will improve the experience and treatment of their patients by upgrading equipment and processes as new technology arises.

What makes Thurston Dental different, in their own words? “Our practice is built on the platform of patient education. We utilize technology to better diagnose, and educate patients on their dental health, which allows them to make informed decisions. Our team is like family to our patients, we take the time to get to know everyone. Our on-site dental laboratory which allows our technicians and dentists to communicate directly also enhances the services our patients receive,” said Barbara.

Scott, who has been with the practice since 1982, has seen these technological advancements first hand, explaining, “As with the rest of the world, Dental Technology has changed considerably. Digital has had probably the largest impact on dentistry, first with digital radiography which is safer for patients, as well as better diagnostic quality. Digital CT scans allow for us to diagnose and treat infection and disease that would have previously gone untreated. Digital impressions are more comfortable for our patients, and easily transfer to be utilized in the fabrication of restorations in our dental laboratory.”

Coming back this fall, the practice will also be having free seminars for, “patients to learn about the benefits of dental implants.” Seminars are planned for September 14, October 19 and November 16. To reserve your seat at one of their seminars Visit our implant site at www.learnaboutdentalimplants.com.

With oral health often overlooked what makes it extraordinarily important to keep up with? “You are right, dental care is often overlooked, however, it is directly connected to a patient’s overall health in many areas. It is the beginning of the digestion process, there is a connection to heart health, oral cancer, self-esteem, and many others, which is why we educate our patients on their personal situation as well as dental health in general. By the time a patient is experiencing pain, there are less options are it is generally costlier. Prevention and early diagnosis is the most cost-effective,” said Scott.

Thurston Dental 308 East Park St. Auburndale, FL 33823 (863) 852-1227 www.drthurston.com

Though dental care is readily available with a selection of practices to choose from, anyone who has ever had a less than satisfying experience knows the impact of a great dental practice. With their ever-expanding technology, the range of services, and customer-centered approach to dentistry, the list of things setting them apart from the fold goes on.

Dr. Gus De Jesus Board Certified Doctor in General and Vascular Surgery Dr. De Jesus was born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico. “My Dad is a doctor, my older brother’s a doctor, my middle brother is a dentist, it’s kind of like the family business,” Dr. De Jesus had told me jokingly. After doing so well in Biology, medical school was the next logical step. He always did well at school and college was not different. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico Medical School in 2002. Completed General Surgery Training at the University of Puerto Rico in 2008. Completed comprehensive training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of South Florida, Tampa in 2010. Dr. De Jesus has achieved the highest honors in both clinical as well as academic research. The plan was always to move back to Puerto Rico because there are very few specialists on the island and there’s a huge need. “I worked as a vascular surgeon in San Juan for two years, this was during the recession and a peak of crime and social injustices. It wasn’t safe to keep my family there. Looking for a job back in Florida, they arrived in Florida and it was a perfect fit. We moved here in 2012 and never left. This is our home now.” Dr. De Jesus has just moved into a new state-of-the-art facility. “This is where I want to continue building my practice, maybe expand but stay here , grow old here and retire here. This is where I want to stay. I want to give back to the community that has given me so much.” Dr. De Jesus is the only board-certified doctor for general and vascular surgery in Lakeland.

Dr. De Jesus knew he was going to be a surgeon the first time he walked into an operating room. “In my first year of rotation, I stepped into an operating room, I knew that’s what I was going to do for the rest of my life.” He found that he liked the challenge of vascular surgery, and it was very gratifying. At the time, it wasn’t a specialty that was very well developed in the islands. That’s why I chose Tampa. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am that they gave me a chance and trained me.”

Being a vascular surgeon feels like a blessing to Dr. De Jesus. “When people come in, with something affecting their quality of life, to be able to take care of them and treat them and then down the road, see them walk better or feel better or enjoy their life more, because of something that not only I did, but my staff did, is an amazing feeling.” He is grateful that he has the ability, along with his staff, to help people enjoy their lives more. They have no plans to move back to Puerto Rico anymore, he and his family love Lakeland. “I like that it’s a small town, family oriented, and I’m impressed with the strong family values that this community has. It’s a very Christian community and that’s very important to us. We love our church and we love Lakeland Christian School. We feel right at home. We lived in Puerto Rico for basically our whole lives, and to come here and feel like this is home, that’s significant to us.”

Petals + Glow Soy Candles and Cold Process Soaps When Jamie Hein of Plant City started her candle business, she had a few core principles in mind. Things like eco-friendly ingredients, recyclable packaging, and clean burning scents were nonnegotiable for the mom of three. Jamie grew up in Ocala before moving to Lakeland in 2006 and to Plant City just a few years ago. Now, she has a full-time business doing what she loves, Petals + Glow. “I actually started making candles with my mom about three years ago as something we could just do together,” Jamie said. When her mom got out of making candles, Jamie pressed on, turning it into a thriving small business. She previously had the operation under different branding, but in an effort to streamline her products and brand she created Petals + Glow, earlier this year. “First, I wanted to establish the candles and the soaps. Those are things that I can do without having additional licensing yet,” she said about her initial ambitions for her shop. Though the candle maker is business-minded about her brand, using her graphic design background to design her own packaging, the products themselves come first. All Petal + Glow candles are hand

poured in small batches and made with 100% soy wax. Soy wax is clean burning and doesn’t produce soot, according to Jamie. She uses oils infused into the wax, avoids using dyes, and finishes them with cotton core wicks. “I try to make it as natural as I can,” she said. She feels that the natural look and scent of her candles go hand in hand with the overall packaging she uses (recyclable boxes versus plastic wrapped). Jamie is transparent with the ingredients she uses as well with all of her current products being vegan. Paired with her line of natural candles, Jamie makes soap as well. She’s fervent about in not using palm oils in her soaps, instead opting for shea butter, coconut oil, and other natural oils. Palm oils are unsustainably sourced, according to Jamie. She explained, “The way that they source them, they’ve actually destroyed a lot of habitats for the gorillas and the rainforest just to harvest that.” She doesn’t want her small business to contribute to these problems. How does she choose what fragrances to create? “You have to put your personal tastes aside when other people enjoy it,” she divulged, saying that the fragrances come from both what she likes and some are requested.

Based in Plant City, her Strawberry Shortcake scent is popular, along with Woodland Citrus, Gardenia, and Lavender. Gardenia is her personal favorite, boasting a fragrance that is spot on to the flower. She beautifies her products with natural accoutrements like lavender flowers sprinkled in the lavender soap, or a new watermelon soap that looks like slices of the summer treat. She makes the soap in loaves, cures them over a few days, and cuts them into slices, leaving them looking like colorful gemstones. She finds purpose in her work by showing people that beautifully scented soaps and candles can come from natural sources. You can shop Petals + Glow candles, soaps, and wax melts online or find them at different shows and markets around the area. Jamie frequents the Grove Roots Moonlight Market and Haus MRKT and would like to do more. Petals + Glow is currently at the LocalShops1 in Gulfport, with more brick and mortar stores looking to pick up her line. Chalk & Chances Project Investigates the Lasting Impact Teachers Have on Students’Lives Chalk & Chances began as a research project driven by a powerful question: What difference do teachers really make in the lives of their students? After Florida Southern College professor, Dr. Julie Hasson, interviewed hundreds of people from ages 18 to 80, she knew that she had to share the stories she collected with other educators. So, that research project grew into a website, www.chalkandchances. com. It seems that everyone has a story about a teacher who made an impact, and shared stories help us celebrate and elevate the work of teachers. The National Education Association estimates that 50 percent of teachers will leave the profession in the

next five years, and the number of teachers entering the profession is dwindling. It has never been more important to highlight the impact teachers make. Julie has always been a teacher. After playing school as a child, she spent fifteen years as an early childhood and elementary school teacher. Over the next ten years as an assistant principal and principal, she saw herself as a teacher of teachers. She loved to see the educators in her building stretch and grow. Now that Julie is a professor in the School of Education at her alma mater, Florida Southern College, her focus is on teaching graduate students 27

to go out and answer their own powerful questions through qualitative research methods. Julie collected stories about teacher impact by showing up at places like craft fairs, farmers markets and park benches with a sign that reads, “Let’s chat about a teacher you remember.” She learned to bring tissues because the personal stories people share are touching and emotional. Julie describes Chalk and Chances as a passion project and a love letter to teachers everywhere.

Ella Sexson IG@ ella_esthetics Twenty-year-old Ella Sexson has been a licensed esthetician for about a year now. Facials, waxing, makeup, natural, glam – she can do it all. We commissioned her to do the makeup on our cover model this month. Not only does she talk about how she got started, but we get a few tips on a “five-minute” look for those mornings when you’re pressed for time. From Michigan, Ella moved with her parents to Florida in 2016. She attended the Florida College of Natural Health, now Cortiva Institute, in Orlando. Ella has been into makeup since she was just a little girl. “I begged my mom to start wearing makeup when I was in middle school.” Around that time, the beauty community on YouTube was increasing in popularity and she became obsessed with tutorial videos. “Then in high school, I got a little bit more experience,” she said. “I did my friends’ makeup, I did my mom’s makeup a couple of times. I think it was about sophomore year that I knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry.” Skincare and makeup go hand in hand according to Ella. “Once I get someone’s skin really nice and health, when you put the makeup on, it just looks even better. The better the skin is, the better the makeup looks.” “That’s why I like being an esthetician because if I am doing makeup, I can teach them what products to use, then with a good skin care routine to do before and after makeup.” Ella consults with her clients, first assessing their skin type. Once she has that to go on, “I always ask them when they look in the mirror, what’s the one thing they’re trying to change. What do they think is their main skin problem is? That’s how I know what products to use on them during the facial, but also what makeup to use.” havenmagazines.com

“I always like to teach people how I’m doing it. That way, they don’t just wear that look, wash it off and it’s done. They can recreate it at home,” she added. What is her favorite look? Natural glam – generally achieved with a smokey eye using more muted colors. Lashes and brows are also things she enjoys playing around with. Speaking of brows – the struggle felt ‘round the world. They’re sisters not twins after all, and on bad days, maybe even distant cousins. So, what are Ella’s tips for perfect brows? Go lighter rather than darker. “If you’re new to doing your brows, go more natural. If you go right in with pomade and draw on a whole new brow, it’s going to look very unnatural. Start with a powder, that’s going to give it a really nice look. Just play with it. See what shape you like,” she explained. As an esthetician, Ella is in the know on emerging trends. This year, two have stood out – rose gold and cut creases. “For the past homecoming and prom season, the one makeup look I was asked to do the most is with rose gold– rose gold eyeshadow, glitter, or highlighter even,” she said, adding that cut creases are in as well. According to her, a cut crease is where the crease line is very defined and blended out above. When people look in the mirror, surprised at their new look or see the difference in their skin, Ella says that’s her favorite. “The best is when you catch your client taking selfies when you’re done!” she said. Personal experience was one of Ella’s greatest teachers when it comes to skincare. Ella herself has Rosacea and acne prone skin and has taken the steps to heal her skin from the inside out. She stopped using many products on her skin so 28

that she could assess her true skin type. When she found that it was oily, she combated that with a gel cleanser and found a toner that helps to deep clean her skin, preventing acne. She finishes with a lightweight moisturizer to soothe her Rosacea. “I just stopped, paid attention to what my skin was doing on its own, and picked the products accordingly.” This regiment has taken her skin from red and irritated and clear and glowing. During her first year as an esthetician, Ella’s focus for her career has been to build up clientele, and it has paid off. Although currently traveling for the summer, she will be looking for a permanent place to work. Another endeavor has been building up her Instagram account, ella_esthetics. She’s been gaining followers and has even had brands send her products. She has been re-posted by several major brands. Ella has advice for aspiring estheticians, “Don’t just sign up for a school and go. Tour as many schools as possible, even if you think you’re in love with a school, keep looking. The better the school is, the more you’re going to learn, the better you’ll be.” Don’t give up or question yourself she said, adding, “Go with it, be confident.” To book your facial, makeup session or lesson, follow and contact Ella on Instagram @ella_ esthetics. 5-minutes to glam: 1. Apply bb cream or a tinted moisturizer to entire face. 2. Lightly dust with powder for a matte look. 3. Fill in brows with matching shade. 4. 1-2 coats mascara. 5. Tinted lip gloss.

Michael LuBeck releases Dragonfly There is a new solo acoustic artist in town. Michael LuBecke (LuBeck) is a well-diverse man when it comes to music and his new album, Dragonfly shows off his talent. As a child, LuBeck grew up in Bristol, Tennessee, a city rich in musical heritage. The legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions has named it the birthplace of country music. In the 1960s, when he was 6-yearsold, LuBeck’s father took him to the Purple Sphere in Chicago. He watched from the side as his dad and two uncles played in their band, The Experiment. “I thought to myself geez, I could make money doing this,” said LuBeck. Growing up in the coal mining district, he was introduced to Appalachian-style country. It was unrehearsed, very authentic and mountainesque. “As a kid, our entertainment was sitting on the porch after dinner and listening to my grandparents play this old timey music,” said LuBeck, “It was magical.” His grandmother is still his biggest inspiration when it comes to songwriting and music. LuBeck had access to every musical instrument growing up. He started off with the drums, and by high school he was playing the trumpet and French horn. Today, he plays the guitar, bass, drums and any other instrument you can think of. “I’m pretty grounded as far as most instruments go,” said LuBeck, “I know the familiarity and how they all work and intertwine.” He has always liked progressive music, such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes and U.K. When metal became a fad, he listened to progressive metal, such as Queensryche and Dream Theater. “I always enjoyed the more technical aspect of music than the

simplicity,” said LuBeck. While at the San Diego Recruit Training Command and Naval Training Center, LuBeck was invited to play drums for the Navy Drum and Bugle Corp. in 1978, he was able to march in the Rose Bowl Parade, play at San Diego Charger football games and San Diego Clipper basketball games. “I couldn’t read the music but I was able to duplicate all the cadences,” said LuBeck, “I did that for 6 months.” By 1980, he was a tour guide on the USS Constitution, an old 1812 vessel located in Boston, Massachusetts at the Charleston Navy Yard. LuBeck moved to Winter Haven six years ago from Chicago, where he lived for 20 years. He played his music and toured all over Chicagoland for 10 years. “My mother was from Winter Haven and I had been coming down 2-3 times a year to see her,” said LuBeck, “I brought my [soon-to-be] wife down here to meet my mom. [she] was very enthusiastic about Florida.” LuBeck married his long-time manager, Anastasia Zivic in October of 2012, after living in Florida for only a week. “We flew back home and got married in front of our friends and family up north and then flew back [to Florida],” said Zivic. LuBeck’s many talents aren’t limited to song writing and creating music. He takes original songs by famous artists and translates them on his acoustic guitar. Depending on what venue you’re at or what the crowd demographic is, you can hear anything from Backstreet Boys to Pink Floyd, Queensryche to Johnny Cash and Foo Fighters to LuBeck originals. “He is an incredibly talented individual,” said Zivic, “he is definitely a musician’s musician.”

LuBeck’s new self-released album, Dragonfly is full of original music, almost retrospective. “I always like to challenge my playing ability,” said LuBeck. This album will showcase three new original tracks by him and two tracks of unreleased material from a progressive band that he was apart of in the 90’s called Hyper Tribe. “Smile” is a song on this album that brings a lot of meaning to LuBeck. “[It’s] a song about lost love,” said LuBeck. Another album favorite is a gospel song called “Show Me the Way” which feature seven other voices from throughout Polk County to create the chorus. “It features keyboards from Greg WolfmanSchleitwiler, a gentleman that [LuBeck] was in a band with for 12 years up north,” said Zivic, “Greg is a classically trained pianist who is influenced by Rick Wakeman.” The CD launch party is scheduled for July 1st at Tanner’s Lakeside in Winter Haven from 3-7 pm. “We have a wonderful band opening for us called Spirit and the Cosmic Heart,” said LuBeck. Fans can also purchase merchandise at the event or online at www.lubecklive.com. If you can’t make it to the CD launch party on the 1st, maybe you can make it to their encore CD launch party on July 2nd at Molly Mccue’s in Lakeland. Whether it’s singing Appalachian style country, singing in a band or singing solo, Michael LuBecke is a man of many talents. “I don’t just casually release songs, I really take my time and develop them,” said LuBeck. His ambition and talents have been said to have added value to the world of music. “He is a world class musician,” said Zivic. FB @ LuBeck

Swan Brewing: Brewing With Style You may remember Swan Brewing in a 10x10 tent at the Downtown Farmers Curb Market in Lakeland. Dan Thumberg, co-owner of Swan Brewing, started selling home brewing supplies to the public and soon met his now partner, Christian Hood. “We sat down and compared our business plans [which] were almost identical,” said Thumberg, “it was serendipitous.” Before becoming a brewing company, Thumberg worked in the corporate world. He worked for Anheuser-Busch distribution in Tampa. AnheuserBusch taught him what it takes to distribute beer. “I understand what distributorships are looking for, I understand the complexity of shelf space, the crowded market space and it helps me understand what volumes we needed to achieve to make distribution in the future a possibility,” said Thumberg. This is also how he learned to brew his own beer. Hood went from being a nurse to brewing beer. While attending nursing school he would often visit the brewery across from the school to avoid the

havenmagazines.com

traffic. “I asked the head brewer at the time where can I buy something like this commercially,” said Hood. The head brewer told him he was able to make his own brew, gave him the brewery’s beer recipe and helped him tweak the recipe each time he brewed it. “Once I fell in love with the brewing process I was already in my final semester in nursing school,” said Hood. “I thought ‘man if I would have known I would have liked it that much, I would have made brewing science as my degree not healthcare.’” After 6-7 months of searching for a location, they stumbled across the future location of Swan Brewing. Thumberg had to get his mail from the main post office, which happens to be across the street. After submitting their paperwork to the city in 2016, they were able to start working on the brewery in 2017. “It’s really been an adventure,” said Hood. “I never really lost that ah-ha moment.” Hood is known as the mad scientist of the Swan Brewing family. He creates a lot of the different blends you see on tap.

32

Swan Brewing offers many craft beers and food trucks for people to enjoy. They have 11 of their own brews on tap right now but are hoping to get anywhere between 15 and 16. “We are still dialing in on our core recipes, getting them just perfect but we are also [experimenting] with a few pilot batches in the brewery right now,” said Thumberg. Their ultimate goal is to have 6-7 brews that are constant and the rest will constantly rotate. They currently offer, among many other flavors, a coconut coffee blonde called Bean Flicker and a Downtown Hazelnut Brown. The DHB became a happy accident after Hood and Thumberg were brewing two different brews side-by-side, a process called double batching. They also offer craft sodas, which are made by Corey Plummer, owner of Sparrows Sparkling Sodas, in-house and they keep a few regulars on tap, including their blueberry lavender and strawberry crème sodas. He also makes specialty sodas like a jalapeño lime soda that was made special for Cinco de Mayo. “His sodas are all made

with organic cane sugar and real ingredients,” said Thumberg, “there is nothing artificial in the sodas.” They also have the owner of Krazy Kombucha, Wendy Johnson come in and craft her kombucha. Swan Brewing makes it possible for you to take the beer home with you, or to a party, or even vacation. You’re able to buy 32 oz. and 64 oz. six pack growlers and single 32 oz. growlers to take with you on vacations or to a friend’s house. “They will last at least a week because we flood them with CO2,” said Thumberg. These orders to go are done right in front of the customer, straight from the tap. They offer live entertainment every night that they are open. This consists of local artists from the community. They are constantly adding new acts to the lineup on a daily basis. “We wanted things to focus on our community,” said Thumberg. When making a craft beer, Hood and Thumberg do a lot of research to understand the origins of the beer they want to create. “We use good old fashioned Lakeland city water, we just put it through

a filter treatment system to [take] out a lot of the chlorines, chloramines and some of the minerals we don’t need,” said Thumberg. They also build the water up using minerals so that the mineral ratios are beneficial to whatever style of beer is being brewed that day. They use different grains and hops from the Pacific Northwest and Europe. A lot of their hops also come from Australia and New Zealand. “I try to develop a recipe by going back to its origins,” said Hood. When this duo isn’t in their laboratory, they are attending events with other beer crafters across the nation or guest starring on Chris Fisher’s podcast BYOCB, Bring Your Own Craft Beer. They attended the 13th annual American Craft Brew week in May. “It’s a celebration of ingenuity and the grass roots and mindfulness that goes into this amazing business,” said Thumberg. “Where you celebrate your competition.” Thumberg and Hood have future plans to work with a hop field in Lake Wales called Caloosa Hops. Swan Brewing was just named the official brewery

33

of the Florida Tropics and are creating a tropical ale just for them. “It’s a very fruity, citrusy beer,” said Thumberg, “We are [also] using a very interesting Norwegian yeast strain that shows off some really unique characteristics.” Now the only thing they have to do is wait to see if those flavors work well together. “My ultimate goal was to make this a local neighborhood hangout,” said Thumberg. At Swan Brewing, everyone is welcome whether human or animal. “We’ve created that family atmosphere that is reminiscent of old time European beer gardens,” said Hood. From the food and drinks, to the games and live entertainment, Swan Brewing is the “hopping” place to be! Swan Brewing 115 W. Pine St. Lakeland, FL 33815 (863) 703-0472 swanbrewing.com

Greg Littleton Greg Littleton was born in Winter Haven and grew up in Auburndale. His story isn’t one about the implant that comes to Central Florida for good weather, or about the person that moves somewhere new and ends up coming back home to Polk County. His parents each moved here as teens, with their families, and never left. He knew from day one that he would follow in their footsteps. From his high school diploma at Auburndale High School to working as President and CEO of Citizens Bank and Trust, Greg has always called Central Florida home.

Corporately, Citizens Bank and Trust takes the responsibility to give back and to show support with dollars. Even more importantly, the bank represents a good citizen through service. They are volunteers and leaders throughout the county. Relationships are a huge part of why he is so appreciative of the banking industry in general. “While taking deposits and making loans might not seem particularly noble, it makes me proud to think about how many home purchases, first cars, adoptions, college educations and on and on that our bank has been able to assist with,” said Greg.

“Auburndale and the surrounding area was a great place to grow up and I always thought it would be a great place to raise a family,” said Greg. Family is at the top of his priorities, and he feels blessed to have his parents, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and church family all together in one area. The fact that this is home is his favorite thing about living here now. He wanted his own children to enjoy and experience what has shaped him.

When he’s not running from office to office around the county, Greg enjoys spending time with his wife Julie and two daughters, Currie Ann and Anna Beth. They love being outdoors either at the beach, on the lake, or in their backyard grilling and eating together. One little known fact about Greg is that he has been on two cross-country trips onboard a motorcycle. Riding motorcycles with a group of close friends is a hobby of his, though he claims his wife would tell you that buying the accessories for them is a close second.

“I love so many things about Central Florida that it’s difficult to narrow them down to my favorite,” said Greg. “I love the natural resources of Polk County. I love the chain of lakes, orange groves, pasture lands, and so many undisturbed natural areas that are scattered around our county.”

Greg has and will continue to serve the community in Polk County and to enjoy all of things he loves about our area.

Greg went to Polk State College where he received an Associate of Arts degree in 1987. He went on to get his bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University and pursued a graduate degree from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University. He has a passion for education and he believes in the power it has to change lives. He serves as the immediate past chairman and remains on the board for both Polk Vision and Polk State College.

“Polk County is home for me and literally the only place I have ever called home. I am thankful for everything and everyone that makes it such a special place!” Greg said. Citizens Bank has been around for nearly a century and is still owned by the family of founder Latt Maxcy. Maxcy’s grandchildren own Citizens Bank and Trust and give their full support to the bank’s mission of giving back to the community. This rich history and dedication to Polk County sets the bank apart from the rest.

“I am so proud to be associated with Polk State College because they exist to make education accessible to anyone with the desire to attend,” said Greg. Being of service to others, both corporately and personally, is extremely important to Greg. He believes that like his parents who helped him get his start, there is an obligation for him to help others. Personally, he has served as chairman of the Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, the Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce and the East Polk Committee of 100. He was also a member of the Lake Wales Arts Council board and the Polk Museum of Art Board. Currently, he is the chairman of the Winter Haven Economic Council and the Heart of Florida Hospital.

Rane Made With an assortment of prints and patterns, Raney Shoults has streamlined her sense of fashion into a business bursting at the seams with Rane Made and her boho, hippie-chic style is “sew” cool!

To find her perfect fabric, Raney went to the old Hancock Fabrics store where they had a table in the back full of fabric deadstock. “I would go back there and just touch and feel and it took me about a year to figure out exactly what my fiber content was that I really wanted. But, once I figured it out, I knew I wanted to make everything in that,” she explained.

Raney’s family has been in Lakeland for 5 generations running. Her father is the generational business owner of a company in the area. Raney recently went from Wade to Shoults when she married her husband, Tyler, earlier this year.

“It’s Florida fabric and I’m a Florida kid. It has to be breathable or else I can’t wear it myself to market it,” she added.

Her affinity for garments came early. “I’ve been sewing since I was in elementary school,” she said. “I love tedious tasks,” she laughed, mentioning her love of Paint by Numbers, hand embroidery, and crochet as a kid, noting the more meticulous the pattern, the better.

That checked off rule one of two that she had when sourcing fabric: one, it has to be breathable and soft, two, it can’t cling to the body. To achieve her second goal, Raney patterns her pieces after simple shapes – a circle, rectangle, triangle. This gives her garments a beautiful drape over the body of any who wear them.

This tendency towards tedium paired with creativity made Raney a natural on the sewing machine. She’d often make matching bags for her and her mom or stuffed animals for her friends. Throughout middle school, she had an embroidery business that served clients all over Lakeland. In high school and college, Raney made a side job out of doing alterations.

Her line of clothing is a collection of the personalities of the people, characters, and pets Raney knows, loves, or is inspired by. She brings the pieces to life with the names she gives them. Her best-selling dress, the Ruby, comes from her grandma’s name Rebie, which she changed slightly. Courtney is her mom, Libby, her sister, and of course the Rane, is the first shirt she ever made. The Fey originated from actress and comedian, Tina Fey and the Molly is named after her dog. The Louise should be easy to figure out for any of you Bob’s Burgers fans out there. “It’s a really quirky piece and she’s a really quirky kid,” she said.

“I just thought clothes were fun to make. I would go to Salvation Army before it was cool to go to Salvation Army,” she smiled, “and I would buy up a bunch of prom dress, and pants, and suits and things. I’d take them all apart and put them back together in my size.” Her trips to Salvation Army to recreate clothes for herself is how she learned garment construction. She took a few classes as well, to learn pattern following, pattern adjustment, and everything from invisible zippers to blind hems.

She finds inspiration of course in her own sense of style, but also fluid shapes and kinetic movement within the works of abstract artists and architects. Raney recently went to the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. “He’s become one of my favorites. He’s extremely abstract and he’s just phenomenal,” she said.

In college, a shirt her friend was wearing caught her eye, remembering the movement of the garment specifically interested her. Her friend brought it over at Raney’s request so she could cut a pattern from it and create something similar. Raney added her own twist, a raw hem, and everyone loved the piece.

Everything purchased through Rane Made is made, well, by Raney. Her hands touch every stitch and sew every seam. Though it seems like a lot of work for one person to handle every aspect of the growing business, Raney has created an assembly line system that works for her. When she’s sewing away on an item or prepping an order to ship, Raney said she has either Friends, The Office, or stand-up playing in the background.

She eventually found herself with quite a few jobs that she didn’t have her heart in. On Halloween day of 2015, she quit them all and decided to give fashion a shot.

The designer took a moment to think about the future of Rane Made and said, “I’d love to be able to have the option to stay home and still be able to bring an income in for my family.”

She made a test run of 17 pieces, something she thought, at the time, was a lot of work. She laughed as she looked at the crowded rack of clothes in her studio, saying she now averages 100 pieces of inventory at any given time.

It’s been almost three years since she started Rane Made, and Raney still gets excited when a new order comes in. “I thoroughly enjoy making clothes for people, it’s fun to me.”

Customers responded to Raney’s unique way of marrying comfort and style in her collection and Rane Made began its blossom. “I think my goal was just kind of to make money doing something I loved,” Raney said. She recognized the public’s love of her product and embraced uniqueness. Through trial and error and an insatiable ardor to create, her profits have grown incrementally into a steady full-time business.

You can shop Rane Made online or follow her social media to see what markets she’ll be at. She has been to the Indie Flea, Haus MRKT, Lakeland Downtown Farmers Market, and Porter Flea in Nashville. Rane Made www.ranemade.com Facebook @ranemadeonline Instagram @ranemadepics

Though her pieces are all so different from each other, they seem to fall in line with her vision. When you see a Rane Made, you know it. The look of a Rane Made piece is unmistakable, but so is the feel. Raney goes into every design with comfort in mind. havenmagazines.com

Yates & Hagan

Yates & Hagan has been a staple shop in Lakeland for over 20 years. What was once a men’s clothing store in Missouri has turned into the booming gift business at Lakeside Village Shopping Center today.

Employee turnover or retention says a lot about a business and Yates & Hagan is able to keep theirs for years. They often hire college students throughout the year that stay with them until they graduate. Or, in the case of store manager, Anna, stick with them for 17 years! “She came to us in college and we managed to keep her,” Jane smiled.

Owners Jane Yates and Kelly Peeples, Jane’s daughter, told their origin story. Yates & Hagan was started by Jane’s husband’s grandfather in Missouri in 1907. Mr. Yates contacted his cousin, Mr. Hagan about starting the men’s clothing store together.

Though you can’t purchase from them online, you can check their social media for the occasional gift with purchase promotions, sidewalk sales or on Friday’s, when Anna does Freakout Friday on Facebook Live where she reveals all their new inventory.

The one store eventually turned into five in northeast Missouri. In 1917, Mr. Hagan went to Mexico, Missouri to start a business under the name Hagan’s. Mr. Yates kept Yates & Hagan and moved to Hannibal, Missouri.

“I think people come here because they know they can find something – a great gift, or if they’re looking for something new or different. We try to always keep it interesting and fresh,” Kelly said. And she’s right, Yates & Hagan is the type of store that you walk into for a gift, and leave with a little something for yourself too.

Jane, who is also from Missouri said that her father-in-law and eventually her husband joined the family business as well. Later, Kelley moved to Florida and Jane and her husband moved to Seattle and were out of the clothing business for a while. The Yates moved down to Florida and eventually the family converged in Lakeland Kelly said. The Yates & Hagan and Hagan’s stores of Missouri are no longer open, but the name is carried on in Lakeland.

The family opened the store in downtown Lakeland, starting with lady’s suiting. They were in that location for nine years before coming to Lakeside Village where they were one of the first four stores. They’ve been there for about twelve years now. After adding Brighton, Vera Bradley, and various other brands, Yates & Hagan became a gift store. “It’s better to be in gifts than all clothing we decided. It just sort of evolved and Kelly is very creative with buying,” said Jane. The shop still offers clothing, but now has an assortment of brands and gifts like Alex & Ani, Spartina, Yeti, Barefoot Dreams, and Quay Australia, just to name a few. You can even have your cup vinyl monogrammed while you’re there. Candles, luggage bags, and gurgle pots – there’s something for absolutely everyone.
