In a Word, the last 12 months for the Tropics soccer organization have been truly “amazing.” Professional or amateur, youngster or adult, male or female, local soccer fans and the Tropics have become intertwined to play and promote the “beautiful game.” Currently, the Lakeland Tropics are in the midst of their second season in the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League. So successful was their inaugural year in 2017, the Tropics earned an invitation to the prestigious U.S. Open Cup this spring. With seven home games on Sykes Field at historic Bryant Stadium – with Saturdays being “Soccer Night in Lakeland” since six of those games start at 7 p.m. on different Saturdays in May, June and July – fans get plenty of family-friendly chances to see the team make a push for the PDL playoffs. Last fall the Tropics and Lakeland FC, one of the largest youth soccer organization in Florida with some 3,000 registered players, announced a merger, with both organizations combing office staff at the Bartow Road location in evolving into Lakeland Tropics FC. In March, the Tropics came come to an agreement with Pinellas County United SC to partner with and rebrand the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) team to the Lady Tropics SC, which will include games in PolkCounty in 2019. And on the professional side, the Florida Tropics of the Major Arena Soccer League – with teams from Milwaukee to Monterrey
and San Diego to Baltimore and many spots in between – willl kick off their third season in downtown Lakeland at the RP Funding Center come December. This year, they’ll have a nearby local rival as the Orlando Seawolves will join the MASL. The man with the grand vision, long-time soccer player and support Dr. Panos Iakovidis who is President and CEO of the Bond Clinic, also serves as the Tropics CEO as well. “Of course it’s nice to win, but the big picture is all about making the Tropics an important and integral part of the Lakeland and Polk County community,” Dr. Iakovidis said. “We want to provide everyone, from players, to our great fans and business community partners, the best experience we can possible provide them, both on the pitch and off. Quite simply our mission, using soccer, is to improve the quality of life for families throughout the area, to make Lakelandand Polk County a little bit better place to call home for all.”
To that end, the Tropics have been involved with everything from supporting free youth clinics – including programs for disabled youth in both Lakeland and Lake Wales – to hurricane recovery. After every MASL and PDL game, fans are invited on to the pitch to meet and get autographs from their favorite players. “What happens off the pitch is as important, and is some ways more important, than what happens on it,” Dr. Iakovidis added. “We are committed to our community, and to providing opportunities at all levels, and for all ages, to be part of the Tropics soccer experience. We want to give Lakeland and all of Polk County the chance to be part of a sport that is growing by leaps and bounds throughout the United States.” More information, including ticket specials for upcoming PDL and MASL games, is available on the team’s facebook pages, and at www.lakelandtropics.com or www.fltropics.com
Hello! Can you believe we’re halfway through 2018 already? This month we celebrate the beautiful Florida weather! The cover story is all about being outside, whether it’s riding a bike or going for a run. We give you safety tips and hopefully inspire you to be active. We talk with Steve Bents, Chuck McDanal and the Lakeland Runners Club to find out what inspires them. We go out to lunch at Cafe Zuppina and have one of the most beautiful and delicious meals ever! There was so much love in that meal, I hugged the owner before I left. Our cocktail of the month is the traditional Pina Colada, inspired by all of the rain we’ve had in May. Do you like Pina Coladas or being caught in the rain? (yes, it’s been stuck in my head all day…) We travel to Longboat Key and stay at the beautiful Zota Beach Resort. We also learn about the cool summer camps offered at Art Centric, an exhibit featuring Kenneth Treister and we have a Q&A with MAKE Plant City. Finally, have a very happy Father’s Day to all of the Dads, father-figures and mentors out there making all of us better people. Check us out online and add your events to our calendar at www.havenmagazines.com. Have a very happy June and see you around town! Amy Sexson Editor asexson@scmginc.com

Children’s Museum Chosen for a Leafy New Home
Publix Calling: Can We Sell Your Product?
Food Truck Park May Be Rolling In
Decision: Move Monument to Veterans Park
Will the City Launch a Fast Internet Utility?
Kids and parks go together like … well, the Explorations V Children’s Museum and the planned Bonnet Springs Park, apparently. The museum was selected as the park’s “anchor” institution. The museum’s move away from its downtown home is at least two years away. The non-profit board overseeing Bonnet Springs is raising millions of dollars to develop 160 acres west of Kathleen Road and George Jenkins Boulevard, and the museum will also be raising funds for the move.
Coffee roaster Chris McArthur was having no luck working his connections to see if he could get his Patriot Coffee into Publix stores. So he was surprised to get an exploratory call from the supermarket chain. It seems somebody had given their buyer a sample of Chris’ beans, and the buyer wanted to know if Chris was interested in meeting. Um, yes! They met, and bags of Patriot Coffee whole beans will start showing up on shelves at 350 Florida Publix stores this month.
The company that runs the monthly food truck rally in Munn Park has been successful in Lakeland. So they came up with an idea to expand their services here to six days a week. They want to partner with Lakeland’s Community Redevelopment Agency to put a food truck park on a vacant lot next to Mass Market in the Parker Street neighborhood. The CRA would build out the facility, and the food truck company would lease it and bring foot traffic to the neighborhood. The deal is expected to cost $440,000 and should go to the City Commission for approval in July.
When city commissioners decided to move the Confederate monument out of Munn Park in December, they left open the question of where to move it. That got settled in May, when the new commission chose Veterans Park over Roselawn Cemetery. They also decided not to spend tax dollars on the move, so the city has set up a fund and a GoFundMe page that citizens can contribute to. The fundraising goal: $225,000.
The city of Lakeland is taking another look at whether to use 330+ miles of fiber-optic cable to start a high-speed Internet utility. Previous city commissions balked at high risk and start-up costs, and they talked of privatepublic partnerships. Taking the lead on the new effort, Commissioner Justin Troller said it’s clear to him the private companies don’t want to play. The city’s staff is looking for a consultant to build a business plan to determine if an Internet utility makes sense.
New Service: Quick Trips to Key West
So Long, Downtown’s Posto 9
Lover’s Oak Decision Coming Soon
Hotel Will Displace Parking
Building Heights Come Under Scrutiny
Legacy Flights, which operates a charter service at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, came up with an idea to make more use of their 30-seat Saab aircrafts: day trips from Lakeland to Key West. Over Memorial Day, the company started offering weekly trips -- two on Saturdays and one on Sundays. Cost: $199 for Florida residents; $229 for others. For now, passengers go down in the morning and come back the same evening, but the company says overnight trips are coming.
Marco Franca announced audacious plans in the spring of 2016: By Christmas, he would gut a century-old building downtown and convert it into a high-end Brazilian restaurant and event space with a rooftop lounge. Several million dollars and a few delays later, Posto 9 opened to mostly positive reviews. By September, the restaurant filed for bankruptcy in order to reorganize its debt, listing assets of $1.21 million and debts of $4.85 million. The morning of May 9, a bankruptcy judge ordered Posto 9 closed immediately. Days later, passersby could still see tables set for lunches that never got served.
Fans of the massive Lovers Oak at Success Avenue and Lake Morton were relieved when a tree expert examined it with high-tech instruments and declared the tree (actually, it’s three trees intertwined) could be saved with careful pruning. The city had planned to remove it after a branch fell on a car passing underneath last July. But hold on. City commissioners still have to decide whether to fix it or chop it after they get a list of costs early this month.
The people who run the RP Funding Center (formerly The Lakeland Center) had long wanted a second hotel nearby to attract more convention business. Some local investors came through with plans for a Spring Hill Suites in a rarely used corner of the parking lot across Lime Street. But it turns out there were soil issues there. So new plans call for planting the hotel in the parking lot immediately east of the Youkey Theatre. Once construction starts, that parking shifts across Lime Street.
After some city commissioners said they wanted more density around the city center, planners drafted rules allowing taller buildings in some zones. A proposal that would raise some apartment limits from 40 feet to 70 feet met resistance from residents of the Lake Morton and Dixieland neighborhoods. As a result, the city Planning and Zoning Board approved a compromise limit of 55 feet. City commissioners are scheduled to decide whether they want the heights changed on June 18.

In 1817, Karl von Drais, a German baron, invented a horseless carriage that would help him get around faster. The two-wheeled, pedal-less device was propelled by pushing your feet against the ground, The machine became known as the “draisine,” and led to the creation of the modern-day bicycle. The term “bicycle” was not introduced until the 1860s, when it was coined in France to describe a new kind of two-wheeler with a mechanical drive. Orville and Wilbur Wright, the brothers who built the first flying airplane, operated a small bike repair shop in Dayton, Ohio. They used their workshop to build the 1903 Wright Flyer. Fred A. Birchmore, 25, circled the globe by bicycle in 1935. The entire trip, through Europe, Asia, and the United States, covered forty thousand miles. He pedaled about 25,000 miles. The rest was traveled by boat. He wore out seven sets of tires. There are over a half billion bicycles in China. Bikes were first brought to China in the late 1800s. About 100 million bicycles are manufactured worldwide each year. Over the past 30 years, bicycle delivery services have developed into an important industry, especially in cities, where the couriers have earned a reputation for their high speed and traffic-weaving skills. Americans use their bicycles for less than one percent of all urban trips. Europeans bike in cities a lot more often—in Italy 5 percent of all trips are on bicycle, 30 percent in the Netherlands, and seven out of eight Dutch people over age 15 have a bike. The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world. Established in 1903, it is considered to be the biggest test of endurance out of all sports. Bicycle Moto Cross (BMX), an extreme style of bicycle track racing, became a sport in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. WORDS & PHOTOGRAPH Amy Sexson There are so many great reasons why, and so many options for bikes that there’s no excuse to not be riding this weekend! Whether you buy a new bike from a store here in Lakeland or buy a used one from Play It Again Sports or a garage sale, there are bikes for every budget, every person.
Why should you ride? It’s a workout that you have fun doing! Riding a regular bike trail for an hour will burn almost 300 calories. Not only that, but exercising relieves stress… and anxiety...aerobic activity increases the production of serotonin and dopamine in your brain. Keep moving for 30 minutes or longer, your endorphins will kick into high gear and you’ll feel awesome. You will feel happy! As a bonus, according to a research team based at Princeton University, physical activity reorganizes the brain so that its response to stress is reduced and anxiety is less likely to interfere with normal brain function. By riding a bike and getting your exercise, you’re proactively preparing for a happier tomorrow. Exercise helps boost your immune system, and all of that Vitamin D you’re absorbing, doesn’t hurt either. Taking a spin on your bike for a brief time has been known to relieve creativity blocks, too. Exercise helps you live longer, feel happier, look cool (that goes without saying) so what are you doing this weekend?
Before you ride, be prepared: Wear a helmet! Replace if cracked or over 5 years old. Use lights when riding at night. Have a bell or horn on your bike. Ride on the right side of the road. Pedestrians have the right-of-way. Dress to be visible. Never assume people see you. Have reflectors, especially in the back. When you come to a stop, pull off to the side. Bring plenty of water & wear sunscreen! It’s Florida! Don’t forget a bike lock!

Kenneth Treister’ s experiential art on display Polk State College’s Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery has transformed into an experiential exhibition of changing colors and geometric shapes with the works of world-renowned artist Kenneth Treister, whose paintings of silk evoke emotions and leave lasting impressions on visitors. For Treister, who has spent his life creating as an architect, sculptor, painter, photographer, author, and lecturer, the exhibit is all about the viewers and how they experience the art, he explains. “This is not a show of individual paintings, but rather an exhibit in which the unity of the art creates one expression and attempts to make a strong impression on the viewers,” Treister said. “This isn’t about the artist, the different pieces, or the pieces as a collection of objects. This is about the experience.” The exhibit is open to the public at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery, 999 Ave. H N.E., Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through July 27.

Instead of individual labels on the paintings, the exhibit includes a single explanation at the front of the gallery to guide its visitors, who are encouraged to first view the paintings from the front center, then move to the left and right to experience changes in colors. “The viewers become dancers,” Treister explained, “and through their movements, they become immersed in the artistic creation.” The inspiration for his exhibit came from nature. “The harmony derived from the continuity of color and light is the beauty we see in beautiful landscapes,” he illustrated. “For example, when you visit Bok Tower Gardens, it’s the totality of the garden – the flowers and the trees, together – that create the beauty you experience.” Treister’s art studio was in Coconut Grove until 2001, when he moved to Winter Haven. He has exhibited his art in galleries and fine art museums around the world, and sculpted Miami

Beach’s world-famous Holocaust Memorial. He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the American Institute of Architects Miami and the Miami Center for Architecture and Design. He has also authored a dozen books on art and architecture, and the University of Florida keeps an extensive collection of his photography – nearly 75,000 photos he has captured around the world. Photos that Treister captured at the Miami City Ballet between 1989 and 1995 are also on display at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery. “Polk State College is incredibly honored to have Mr. Treister’s work and thought-provoking exhibit on display,” Polk State President Angela Garcia Falconetti said. “This is a unique opportunity for our students, faculty, staff, and community members to experience the arts and we could not be more thrilled.”
Q & A With MAKE Plant City Tell me the origin story of Make Plant City, who started it, and how you are associated with Lakeland Creative Makers.
them to know about each other, and to shine light on them for the Plant City community to know they are there. -Victoria
It started with Victoria Saunders and Arley Smude running into Charles Galvin and Rebecca Nipper Galvin at the Lakeland Creative Makers group last summer. Why were we all driving to Lakeland when there are so many creative makers in Plant City? We just needed a platform to connect everyone. The four of us recruited other makers and creative people we knew in Plant City -- Jessie Frier, Mara Latorre, Jess Greenbaum, Kayla Lunsford and the Hollenkamp brothers. From there we planned our first event for September and have been growing since. We were inspired by the Lakeland Creative Makers, and with their blessing, stole as many of their ideas as possible. There are lots of art and maker groups, but what Bump, Becky and Sunny created in Lakeland, was the right model for Plant City:
Why do you think it is important to cultivate the arts in your community?
Give me an overview of your events? Is there a host/ speaker? When and where are they? About how many people usually attend?
Creativity opens pathways for people to make contributions and connections to the community. Putting art at the heart of a community enhances our lives by reminding us that we’re all creative.Victoria
We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm, typically at the Corner Store, but depending on the speaker have also hosted at other places, like The Bing House and Brick City Bricks.
1. Broad in scope to include all types of creatives and makers 2. Informal, no membership fee or obligation 3. Fun and entertaining, all levels and backgrounds enjoy it The support of Lakeland Creative Makers, especially early on, was instrumental. The advice and experience they offered and continue to offer is incredible. What Bump, Becky and Sunny always say couldn’t be more true: it’s all about the people and relationships.-Victoria What were your original goals? Our mission is to inspire and connect artists and makers of the community. There are no shortage of artists, makers and even creative groups in our community, but they mostly exist in silos. We wanted to create a platform for makers and artists to get inspired, collaborate and create, and broadly be a force to grow the creative community of Plant City. There are so many undiscovered creative people, businesses, and artistic nooks of Plant City; we want
Beyond the intangibles, makers and artists provide real economic benefits to a community. Even at our events, we’ve seen jobs created. There’s a growing demand for locally crafted, and the more those artists and makers have exposure, the more there will be in a community. We have leathersmiths, painters, bakers, photographers, fabricators; makers of knives, candles, stained-glass, candy, robots, music, to name a few -- people would rather buy these things from their neighbors, but they have to know that they’re there. -Arley What role does MAKE Plant City have in the roles of its members’ lives? An outlet, networking, new opportunities, etc.? MAKE Plant City is different things to different people. We have anyone from professional artists and makers, to hobbyists, to just curious. It’s designed to be open and interesting to everyone, because who doesn’t find the creative process of designing sets for the world’s largest theme parks interesting? Or Dave Letterfly’s tales of hand painting signs for the circus, and how the business has evolved over 4 decades? Or Starr Creations talk about how they make the trucks for Monster Jam? All right here in Plant City. Beyond the speakers, it’s a place for artists and makers to connect and collaborate. Want to put on an arts and music festival in Plant City? Come to a MAKE event to find musicians and collaborators. Teaching an art class? Come let people know about 23
it. We are a platform and catalyst to launch more creativity in the community.-Victoria
Each event has a keynote speaker. We carefully choose the speakers -- they are the cornerstone of each event. Their stories, struggles, and lessons are what bring people. We also have a showcase artist/maker, announcements for anyone to share an event or project they want to publicize, and most importantly people are just socializing. Typically there are 30-60 people. What are you goals for the future of the group? Our mission is to inspire artists and makers of the community -- to be a platform and catalyst for creativity. All the folks that help organize the events have full-time jobs, we volunteer our time because we think MAKE Plant City can help bring the creativity of our town closer to its potential. The community has responded and we see new faces at every MAKE event. More importantly, we are seeing the broader creative impact from relationships and connections made each month. Whether it’s people collaborating on making a piece of furniture in their garage, organizing an improv group, stand-up comedy night, social painting sessions, or an Art & Music Festival -- there is so much creativity here and when there’s a place to connect and build off each others’ strengths, you start to see the larger shift in the creative culture of the community. -Arley

Summer Camps at Art Centric Studio It’s almost summertime! Do you know what your kids will be doing? Sleeping in, video games, pool parties, bugging mom–that’s great and all, but what about a creative outlet to get them off the couch and out of your hair? Art Centric Studio has 8, week-long camps over the course of the summer with unique themes. “It’s raising up this community of creatives in a space that they can feel comfortable and safe to create, no matter if they’re 3 or 14,” expressed owner of Art Centric Studio, Becky Yohe. The courses are broken up into age groups: Primary (ages 3-7) and Secondary (ages 7-14). Each camp is Monday through Friday. “The camps are reflective of each other in their formats. Though the themes are different and the projects are different, some of the setup is similar,” Becky explained. Part of this structure includes different creative projects based around the theme, dance parties (a kid favorite according to Becky), and pizza/ free art day on Friday. “The last after lunch period on Friday they get to create with anything we put on the table. We put glitter, stickers, crayons, markers, pastels, watercolors, you name it and it’s on their table.” At the camps, tables are broken down by age with one staff member for each table that will stay at the same table all week, and one lead instructor. “We start off with building sets on the table that they can do. We creatively suggest different things as they all get started,” said Becky. They will do things like trying to build only using yellow, or seeing if they can use every single piece to build something collectively. She also has a book related to each theme that she’ll read to the kids. For instance, books all about dinos and havenmagazines.com
donuts or the book “Pocket Full of Color.”
wooden, blank dollhouses. “They will be doing blueprints and designing the theme for each room and colors that they would use for the exterior,” said Becky.
Besides the pizza and free art day on Friday, campers will get to take home a free-standing grocery bag full of all the projects they’ve done throughout the week. Parents will receive a newsletter on the last day that gives questions they can ask the child about their artwork, vocabulary they went over, books they read, and a summary of what they did during camp.
Each day, they will be working on a different room. They will be doing weaving for rugs, printmaking for wallpaper, and using loose parts and recycled objects for the furniture and people. On Friday, the camp will end 30 minutes early for parents to come to the ‘open house.’
Donuts & Dinos June 4th-8th 10am-1pm SOLD OUT Primary (ages 3-7)
This class is almost full, so hurry and register!
Already sold out, this camp has a tiny mascot that will be hanging around, a little plastic dino named Dan. This camp will feature printmaking and other hands on activities such making donuts using cut pool noodles and a buildable format with glitter and glue.
Loose Parts July 9th-13th 10am-2pm Secondary (Ages 7-14) Build your own LEGO person! Kids will be able to choose between short or long arms and legs, and will get a body and head, and a 10 x 10 inch base that have been custom cut. Art campers will use ‘loose parts’ to create their LEGO person, giving them hair, a face, and other accessories.
Neon Illusions June 11th-15th 10am-2pm Secondary (Ages 7-14) Kids will enjoy all things neon from permanent markers to neon pastels. Some activities include detailed gridding to make an optical illusion as well as the book “Round Trip” which can be read all the way through one way, turned upside down, and read the other.
Metal & Shine July 16th-20th 10am-1pm SOLD OUT Primary (Ages 3-7) This “robots, glitter, and shimmer” camp was, “created in the hopes of having something that interests both a boy and a girl,” according to Becky.
Clay LAB June 18th-22nd 10am-2pm Secondary (Ages 7-14)
Kitchen Sink July 23rd-27th 10am-2pm Secondary (Ages 7-14)
This hands-on, secondary camp is where kids will make a line relief pencil cup, coil press pot project, and bobblehead pet.
Pocket Full of Color July 30th-Aug. 3rd 10am-1pm Primary (Ages 3-7) This camp is Disney themed, based on a book of the same name. “Pocket Full of Color is the story of the artist who designed It’s a Small World, the Disney ride, and how she saw color and how she used it,” said Becky. The tables will be lined with table cloths of different colors and the projects will be based around those specific color families in order to create a big cooperative art piece. Where did these uniquely creative art camp ideas come from? According to Becky, “This studio is unique in that this is my full-time job. A lot of times, art studios are compiled of people that work full-time and this is their hobby. This is my job. My job is to make them amazing all the time as much as we can because I also have two children. My goal for the summers is always if they end up having to come with me for all 8 weeks, they’re excited to come everyday.” If your little one isn’t quite old enough for art camp just yet, check out the ‘Mommy and me’ classes Art Centric will have every other Saturday throughout the summer. For more information or to sign the kids up for a camp, head over to https://www.artcentricstudio.com, under the ‘Summer Schedule’ tab. Art Centric continually updates their website for classes that have been sold out or are almost full. Happy camping, Lakeland!

Cafe Zuppina Do you know that feeling you get when your grandma makes you something to eat and you can just taste the love she made it with? Anyone who has dined at Cafe Zuppina does. “Today, one of my customers told me he feels like he’s in his grandmother’s home,” said owner and chef at Cafe Zuppina, Berna Nar, “Every time I check on him, he feels like he needs to finish the plate,” she laughed.
healthier to spend less money on doctors.” She even accommodates guest’s dietary needs and preferences. If you make her aware of a specific allergy or way of eating, whether it be a gluten allergy, vegan, or vegetarian, she will make adjustments around that. Cafe Zuppina has a purposely limited menu. The one page of delicious options mirrors how selective Berna is with her ingredients, only serving the best. The veggies are fresh, the lamb is organic, and fish are wild caught. Check their Facebook page for daily soups and specials as well.
A Turkish restaurant tucked back off Florida Avenue, Cafe Zuppina is a small restaurant with big flavors. The space is intimate, and that’s the way Berna likes it.
Berna offers cooking classes at the cafe for $50 per person. The classes each have a different theme and can have up to 23 people. They are a demonstration and dining experience, so you can watch Berna make a dish, enjoy it, and take home the recipe. They often sell out months in advance, so make reservations ahead of time by visiting the restaurant.
The name Cafe Zuppina is a reflection of that cozy space, meaning “a small cup of soup” according to Berna. Originally from Turkey, Berna brought Cafe Zuppina to Lakeland about 9 years ago. She has lived in Plant City for about 16 years, having owned a restaurant there as well. When she was looking for a space in Lakeland, the small space spoke to her.
For lunch, Berna walked out and sat two absolute pieces of artwork on the table. The Romanian-style Brisket Platter and the Veggie Platter were both colorful composites of flavors I’m sure I’ve never had before.
Adamantly against becoming a commercial restaurant, Berna’s homecooking is made fresh every day with natural, organic ingredients that she sources from local organic grocers and farmers. And with only one helper in the kitchen, Berna takes quality control to a whole new level.
On the brisket platter, which is a best seller along with the chicken kabobs, was brisket, carrot slaw made with yogurt, a bean salad, Romanian-style mushrooms, saffron rice, asparagus, and the vegetable Cafe Zuppina is famous for–Brussels sprouts. Berna’s Brussels could make even the staunchest veggie hater, convert.
The recipes she uses are a mixture of her mother’s and her own. She describes the cuisine as a combination of the Aegean Mediterranean part of Turkey, as well as eastern European influences as her mother was from Romania.
havenmagazines.com
The standout flavors in Turkish food, and her combination style cuisine specifically, is a lot of vegetables, fresh ingredients, herbs and spices like turmeric, oregano, parsley, and mint.
The Veggie Platter boasted eggplant, potato salad, beans, leeks, celery root, zucchini, a feta roll, couscous with fresh tomatoes and parsley, sautéed kale, Romanian mushrooms, Berna’s hummus made fresh every day, and of course, Brussels sprouts.
Berna focuses heavily on healthier dishes, saying, “People need to eat
Every bite was more exciting than the last, with each tasty fork-full 26
promising something new–lemon, vinegar, sweet, savory, smoky. There were veggies I’ve never had before and flavors that I couldn’t put my finger on, other than that they were delicious. Berna doesn’t add much salt or sugar to any of her dishes. She starts with simple ingredients and prepares them beautifully. Each herb, vegetable, or spice speaks for itself in her food, I wouldn’t dream of masking such exciting flavors with extra salt. Everything was perfect. “It’s made with love,” Berna said. “It’s made from our heart to your stomach,” she beamed sincerely. Chuck McDanal Chuck McDanal landed in Polk county over twenty years ago when his then wife of one year decided she wanted to move back home. He had lived in California, New Hampshire, Virginia and Washington D.C., but Florida was foreign land. “I knew nothing about Florida other than old Miami Vice reruns with glasshouses and cigarette boats,” he said.
tested out different shoes from FitNiche to find his favorites for each race. Chuck refined his training strategies time and time again to now trains every day, 60 to 70 miles per week. When does he find the time to balance work, family, and a social life? He wakes up while the rest of us are sleeping. Each morning he sets his alarm for 3:30 am. “There are people who get up, get dressed and get out the door to go run. Then there are people like me who get up, have a cup of coffee, sit there and drink it, be at one with the world and then go run,” he said.
When he arrived things were simpler than he was used to. “Florida was phosphate, citrus, cattle and pick-up trucks,” he said. He moved to Winter Haven for five years, then headed over to Lakeland where he lives currently. He is proud to have seen the county grow up. Not only is Lakeland a city that he considers a pretty cool place to start a family, but it is also a city he explores by foot every single day.
Chuck set what he calls bucket list times for each distance race and has been breaking them ever since. As incredible as it feels to achieve his life goals in running, he’s humbled by the fact that it’s such a personal sport. “It doesn’t really matter how good you are because there’s always somebody who’s way better. You’re just not really competing against other people as much as you are yourself,” he said. He broke a 1:40 in a half marathon at OUC in Orlando. He beat twenty minutes at a 5k in the fall. In December, he even beat a wicked fast six minute mile to hit his goal of starting it with a five.
“Some people run just to cross-train for another sport or because they want to eat another cheeseburger, but running is such a part of the fabric of my life,” he said. “I run because it makes me happy and it brings joy to my life.” He noted that many people who aren’t runners would think that line is absurd, but they don’t yet know it like he does. Chuck wasn’t always a runner. He ran here and there in high school, for training during his time in the Marine Corp., and then a bit to spend time with his father who ran. He was never serious about it until eight years ago when the newest place to run was installed right by his home.
Chuck gives most of his credit to local non-profit, Lakeland Runners Club, which he is on the board of. Formerly President and Vice President, Chuck says this group of over 700 members is a tribe of all different people who have one thing in common. “It’s interesting as a community because we all share a love for running, but it’s not like everybody is the same political party or the same faith or has the same job,” he said. “If there’s a new face there and they’re going the right pace you meet new people and you hear their stories about why they run and where they’re from.”
“When they started pulling out that old railroad bed and putting in the Fort Fraser trail I saw it as a sign and had no excuse,” he said. “I would drive my wife’s car to the top of the hill and then run because I was too lazy to run up the hill.” He claims his only reasoning for taking her car over his was because she had the mom car and he didn’t mind sweating in it on the way home! The race he is most excited to watch newcomers complete now was a feat for him on his first try. He said, “In 2010, I ran the Gasparilla 5k and I wasn’t even sure that I could finish it. I’ve been hooked ever since.” Little did he know, he would end up running race after race and then nine different marathons all over the country. This past March he ran the Myrtle Beach marathon and for the first time he accomplished a major goal by qualifying for the Boston Marathon!
Meeting people and seeing new places are two of his favorite things about the sport. When he travels he checks to see if any races are going on as a way to explore. This year he ran through Switzerland. “Zurich has a midnight race on New Years that, because of where it is on the globe, is the first run on the planet for 2018. We’re running into the dark along this dark river, everyone with headlamps on and all of Zurich is blowing up in fireworks around us,” he said. For Chuck running isn’t just a sport. It’s a way to get from here to there, a way to spark a friendship, a way to sightsee, and a way to stay healthy each day.
It didn’t come easy. He did a two-month experiment to calculate that 1700 calories of clean food was exactly what his body needed plus running each day. He realized that a massage once a month wasn’t a luxury, but a necessity. He saw how yoga and weight training loosen his body and counterbalance the runs. He

Lakeland Runners Club Young, old, families, students–people of all walks of life join together for weekly runs with the Lakeland Runners Club. This runners club provides more than just a sense of community to each other, it gives back to the community.
and can attend their monthly meeting at Cleveland Heights Golf Club. The club has weekly runs throughout the week, according to LRC President, Gail Hardy. The runs are all a bit different–track workouts, running trails at Holloway Park, hill workouts, and runs on Saturdays starting at Mitchell’s Coffee House and Black & Brew.
The club started in 1974 as part of the Lakeland YMCA Running Club. In 1990, the group branched off and incorporated as Lakeland Runners Club Inc. LRC is best known for the five racing events they put on throughout the year. The MidFlorida Mayfaire 5k is a popular run, followed by the Watermelon 5k Series which is a 3-race series over the summer in June, July, and August with a goal of beating your previous time each race.
Hardy is enthusiastic about the club’s goals, saying, “We try to keep people involved and keep them running, and healthy. That’s the whole idea is to bring people in to start running.” Hardy has been running for a little over 30 years and got involved with the club when she moved to Lakeland 7 years ago. “That’s the first thing I did was join the running club because I didn’t know anybody. Now I have multiple friends because runners are the friendliest people in the whole world,” she said.
The Aching Quad 4 Race Challenge taking place in September is 4 races in 24 hours with a 5k on that Friday night, 1 mile Saturday morning, 2 miles later in the morning, and another 5k that night. The Lake to Lake 10k in October is the oldest running race in the county, according to LRC member Rob Mason, who’s been with the group since 1977. The Double Down 5k in November is a 5k double loop.
The club has something for everyone from kids to beginners, to training Olympians (there are 2 people training for the Olympics in their club). They offer kid’s and middle school running programs as well as cross-country for kids. Members range from 5 years old to well into their 80’s.
Since its founding, the club has grown year over year, now with over 750 members. Membership is $25 for individuals and $35 for families. Members receive all their posts, a $25 voucher that is good for any of the races, a club shirt,

Hardy spoke about the future of the Lakeland Runners Club, “We want to grow in membership because I think we offer a lot. The more people that we can get involved, the more I think we can help the community.”
“We actually have training clinics,” said Hardy. “Last year, we started our first beginning running clinic. We thought it would be small, but it had 75 people. This year we have 88 in the beginning running clinic.” There is a fee for the clinic, but participants are trained by a certified coach and get to run free in the Mayfaire 5k.
What about a few tips for novice runners? “Get ready to walk some. Don’t put too high of a goal on yourself initially, just go out there and get used to it,” said Rob Mason.
Giving back to the community is a priority for LRC. “Our club donates scholarships. We give $15,000 worth of scholarships to Polk County students. We try to keep everything in Polk County,” said Hardy. The nonprofit, volunteerbased organization also donates to the YMCA, the arts, and participates in the Rudolph Roundup at Christmas providing presents for children.
Kristi Lawrence, who is on the board of directors and is the race director for the Aching Quad, added, “Start slow, start really slow, just start walking. Walk a block, walk a half a block, do whatever you can. When it gets hard, don’t quit, just stay consistent because it will get easier with time.”
Everyone has different motivations for running, different things they get out of it. According to Hardy, this is hers, “I’m retired now, but my job before was very stressful, so that would help. It makes me feel good. Sometimes people ask me what I’m training for, and I say, “For life,” because I want to be healthy all the way out.”

Bent’ s Cycling Driving down Florida Avenue, it’s hard to pass that charming old Schwinn sign outside of Bent’s Cycling without the memories of flying down a hill on my one-speed as a kid and throwing the pedals backwards to do a cool slide at the bottom.
a photo of his father standing with the mayor at the time and a state senator breaking ground on the path. Steve now carries on the family cycling tradition and claims to have 400,000 plus miles under his belt. What trails does Bent enjoy? “We have all different directions of the compass,” he said, adding that he prefers roads less traveled.
Bikes are a generational thing for the Bent family, according to owner Steve Bent. Steve calls Lakeland home. His family moved here from Wisconsin when he was only 6.
He also rides with the Polk Area Bike Association who regularly puts on organized rides. Steve had just gotten back from a trip to a cycling event in Arkansas when we spoke and plans to do a more in the future.
“It goes way back,” Steve said discussing the history of the store. “My great uncle had a sporting goods store in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was selling Schwinn bikes, back at the turn of the century.”
Stop in to Bent’s Cycling for a new bike, a repair, or maybe just to hear a few stories about the Bent family, like his grandfather’s giant Cadillac, his 1939 Indian Traffic Car of which only 13 were ever made and is now in the American Motorcycle Museum, or the 1895 Acme bike that recently came through the shop.
According to Steve, his grandfather worked for Uncle Gordon at the sporting goods store, in the bike division, and took up an interest. Once Steve’s dad, Roland came along, his interest in bikes was piqued as well. “When my dad was 16, he talked his dad into having a bike shop of his own. So, my grandfather found him a garage and he and a buddy started the bike shop,” he said.
I asked Steve Bent, who has spent his whole life in the shop, what his favorite memory was there. “All the people that come in that haven’t ridden a bike for 20 years, 30 years, since they were a kid, and looking around and finding their bike that they like. It’s happened a 1000 times, you know? That’s my favorite time– getting people going on a bike again. Everybody should have a bike, right?”
Once he outgrew his small bike shop operation, Steve’s father became a welder, working in a shipyard, welding subs in WWII in Manitowoc, WI.

He opened Bent’s Schwinn Cyclery there in 1945. Knee pain eventually brought him to Lakeland in search of warmer weather in 1961. Roland started the shop in the same building it’s in today, riding his bike to work for 30 plus years. According to Steve, the space was in poor shape when his dad first acquired it. “I remember it was a beatnik coffee house. Plaster was coming off the ceiling and the walls,” he said. His mother was none too pleased about the state of the building, but, “Turned out, he knew what he was doing. There was a parking lot, that’s what he told me years later.” The freestanding building with a parking lot was something Roland thought he could eventually buy, and he was right. Aside from a neighborhood bike shop, the Bent family made an impact on Lakeland, specifically the pedestrian path around Lake Hollingsworth. According to Steve, his father pushed to have a pedestrian path put there. He talked about

Zota Beach Resort Longboat Key, FL My husband and I decided to take a weekend trip to the beach. It’s one of the best parts about living in central Florida, right? Choose your coast, choose a city & go! We had narrowed it down to Longboat Key on the Gulf side but didn’t know where to stay without going over budget. With a little research and booking.com, we ended up at the beautiful Zota Beach Resort. It was luxurious and because the resort has its own private stretch of beach, it was pretty peaceful. It was the perfect weekend getaway. Opened in June of 2017, Zota is part of the Opal Collection, a premier line of luxury hotels and resorts, located in the best destinations from Bar Harbor, Maine to the southernmost tip of Key West, Florida. The name is inspired by the indigenous name for Sarasota, Zara Zota. Early Spanish explorers thought the white beaches looked like the Sahara, called Zara. Zota means blue waters, so Sahara by the blue waters is Zara Zota eventually becoming Sarasota. Zota Beach Resort consists of 2 towers separated by an infinity edge pool, outside bar and a private beach. The south tower is new construction, with balconies at a 45 degree angle facing the gulf. The north tower was a former Hilton. In July of 2014, the building was taken down to the bones and rebuilt into Zota with views of the pool and 10 rooms facing the gulf. There is a price difference between the 2 towers, however, you get the same amenities. Let’s talk about the rooms! Beautiful! They are peaceful, with walls the color of the ocean. The balcony overlooking the pool and gulf was the best spot to enjoy the glass of bubbly offered to us at check in. Rooms come with a small fridge, coffee maker and large, luxurious bathroom. Bed is super comfy, too.

The private beach is what you would expect, white powdery sand & crystal clear water. Zota offers luxury beds & umbrellas to rent as well as lounge chairs. You can also rent kayaks and paddleboards for the afternoon. The pool area is lined with 120 chairs, a poolside food & drink service, an oversized game of chess, 3 hammocks and a jacuzzi pool that fits 25. They offer 8 “Zen Lounges” to rent poolside that come with a refrigerator and complimentary fruit plate inside, a safe, tv, couches and a ceiling fan to keep you cool. We decided to stay in one for the afternoon and loved it. We ordered pina coladas and snacks and spent the afternoon doing absolutely nothing. I think I fell asleep, I can’t even tell you the last time I took an afternoon nap!
We decided to stay at the hotel for dinner and sat outside, overlooking the pool and gulf. The sun was setting, the breeze was blowing and the food was so delicious. I started with the Handshaken Coconut Daiquiri a drink made of coconut rum, lime, agave with toasted coconut on the rim. Delicious! The perfect tropical drink for a sunset at the beach. For dinner I had the Lobster Ravioli made with sauteed spinach, roasted tomatoes and sherry butter. My husband ordered the Grilled Filet with truffle mashed potatoes, carrots and barolo jus. Both dishes were decadent, and absolutely worth every calorie. We finished with creme brulee decorated with tiny flowers, like everything else that night, it was delicious.
Zota offers 24/7 access to a fitness area with luxury equipment. The view overlooks the pool and gulf, so you can remember that you’re on vacation and that you should stop working out! I’m kidding, but seriously, the view is killer.
I asked Roy when the best time of the year to come out for a quick weekend vacation. “Anytime in the summer, avoid the holidays and spring break. After Easter the rates go down.” With St. Armand’s Circle only a few miles away, it’s definitely easy to make a long weekend of it.
I spoke with Roy Padgett, General Manager at Zota. Roy has been working with the Opal Collection of properties since 2002. He started at the Longboat location about one year before they opened to oversee construction and to get the resort up and moving. I asked Roy why someone should choose Zota. “It’s beautiful! If you want a quiet time at the beach, without a lot of people around, Longboat Key is the place to go. We are a perfect resort to relax at.” Roy walked us around and talked about some of the amenities. The resort is modern, with lots of glass so you have beautiful views everywhere, water features throughout the lobby and pool area and a relaxing turquoise color throughout. Inside, you’ll find a business center, ATM, a facility to rent for parties or wedding receptions and a restaurant called, Viento.

I’m so glad we ended up at Zota. Not only was everything beautiful, but it was the little things that made our stay feel so special. We were offered prosecco at check in, they have fruit water ready for you in the lobby at any moment, they serve freshly baked cookies in the afternoon, and the employees were so kind and made us feel like we were the only people at the resort. We will definitely be going back! 4711 GULF OF MEXICO DRIVE, LONGBOAT KEY, FLORIDA 34228 LOCAL 941.383.2451 RESERVATIONS 855.335.1102 www.zotabeachresort.com
