LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Happy November! We are getting closer to the holidays and for some, that means it’s giftgiving season. Our cover feature is about 15 local makers. I try to shop at local, independent businesses and restaurants whenever possible. It’s not only good for the local economy, but it’s good for the individual families of makers. As you will see, they put their heart and soul into what they make. And we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to purchase these unique items and gift them to someone. It’s personal and it’s a really special way of showing your love for someone. Shopping local for the holidays is a winwin. A big thank you to Heidi Wineland! She allowed me into her home to take photos of her Knitagains for the cover. Thank you! Get to know John Fitzwater & Leslie Sikora, 2 of Lakeland’s most influential people. Meet Bill Lawrence who takes vinyl records and turns them into art. Our writer, Tara takes us on a date night to Chef T’s Garden Grill. Finally, we travel to Marathon, FL and visit the Turtle Hospital. A major turtle rehabilitation center where hundreds of turtles are treated each year. Meet Irma, the turtle they found after the hurricane came through. Spoiler alertall turtles are doing well. Have a very happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have time to spend with your friends and families. And more importantly, take time to focus on what’s important and everything you’re grateful for. Thank you so much for picking up Haven Magazine and reading. We appreciate your support and look forward to hearing from you. Happy Thanksgiving! Amy Sexson asexson@scmginc.com

DOWNTOWN LIVING

SO LONG, CASH FEED

MUD ON YOUR WALL

Ninety-three years after it was built overlooking Lake Mirror, the Lakeland Cash Feed building is coming down. Plans to renovate the iconic Mediterranean structure into the Catapult 2.0 business innovator halted after Hurricane Irma weakened its already fragile walls. The Lakeland Economic Development Council, which owns the building, plans to tear it down and is deciding whether to build a new Catapult on the Cash Feed site or somewhere else.

As the Nov. 7 city election approached, mudslinging became fierce — particularly on your Facebook feed if you follow politically inclined Lakelanders. Whether the strong mayor issue passes or your favorite mayor or commission candidates win, one thing’s for certain: Yard signs will come down after Election Day and your Facebook friends will return to gentler pursuits — like arguing about Trump’s tweets.

A NEW ER

IT’S MAGIC

A plan to bring 500 residents to downtown Lakeland passed “go” recently. City commissioners agreed to sell 10 acres behind the LPD headquarters to Framework Group of Tampa. The developer plans to build 306 apartments and rental townhouses on land the city cleared of houses more than a decade ago. Prime target renters: Millennials seeking downtown living and Boomers seeking downsized lifestyles.

Florida Hospital is moving toward Lakeland. The Orlando-based health system is planning to build a freestanding emergency room on 104 acres it recently bought just west of the Florida Poly campus. The non-profit organization hopes to expand to a full hospital as the area grows but acknowledges that’s at least 10 years away and they’ll need state approval.

Pro basketball debuts at the RP Funding Center Nov. 10 when the Lakeland Magic launch their initial season. The development-league affiliate of the Orlando Magic will play on a new parquet court designed in team colors as part of the arena’s multi-milliondollar renovation. If you can’t make the 16 home games, there’s a social-media-age twist: They’ll be streaming on Facebook Live.

PICKUP QUESTION

MONUMENTAL GINORMOUS MEETING PARK

RESTAURANTS BROADENING COME AND GO BROADBAND

The most persistent question in Lakeland in October wasn’t, “Are you for or against strong mayor?” It was, “Your debris been picked up yet?” The sought-after status symbol was a curbside patch of brown where your grass used to be, signaling that your Hurricane Irma yard debris was carted away. City officials maintained that the first pickup pass would be done by the end of October and the third and final pass would finish by New Year’s Day.

With everybody’s power back on after Irma, city commissioners are turning their attention back to deciding whether to remove the Confederate monument from Munn Park. Members of the public can air their opinions at a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the RP Funding Center. It could last awhile. They’re not turning off the lights until everyone who wants to has had a chance to speak, City Manager Tony Delgado says.

New restaurants in Lakeland include Duke’s Brewhouse, a beer-and-wings joint with a blue collar vibe, at Lake Miriam, and First Watch, a “daytime cafe” known for its breakfasts, just north of Lakeland Square. A First Watch opens soon on Florida Avenue near the Parkway. Gone: Square 1 burgers. Moving: Palace Italian shifts a mile north on Florida Avenue to the south end of Lake Miriam Square.

Plans to build a huge, urban park west of downtown Lakeland are ambling along. The city recently donated several acres to the non-profit organization that bought 180+ acres bordering Lake Bonnet to build Bonnet Springs Park. Plans shown at a recent public meeting showed several design alternatives: nature/trails, culture/arts, local history — or some combination of the three.

9

Energized by a trip to a national “gigabit summit,” City Commissioner Justin Troller is pushing to parlay Lakeland’s 300 miles of fiber optic cable into a city-run, high-speed Internet utility. Count most of the other commissioners as skeptics; they question the cost and risks in competing with private providers. But the ultimate decision rests with a new commission seated in January, when at least three of the seven seats will change hands.

Shop Lakeland

The season of giving is approaching. There’s just something special about focusing on the people that matter to you and finding the perfect gift to represent their significance in your life. Whether you have a long list of people you’d love to buy for or just one, we’d love to encourage you to think local this time of year. Sometime throughout the years, gift giving has gotten muddled. It’s turned into long lines on Black Friday, fighting crowds of angry consumers to get the last of this or that item– it’s lost that personal touch. How do we get that back? How do we get back to giving for the sake of giving, supporting one another, and put that magic back into our holidays? It starts with time, the time spent thinking of other people, the time of local makers and creators that put their personalities into their local products. Shopping local brings together community and business to invigorate the local economy and spread cheer and happiness through gifts that mean something to those that make them and those that receive them. Instead of buying your Dad the millionth tie he won’t wear or getting your best friend something impersonal, check out the abundance of local gifted creators. All it takes is a little thought and a little Lakeland to put that magic back into giving.

jester foxe Artist Molly Crystal is the magic-maker behind jester foxe, something that according to her, “started as a creative outlet and evolved into a small business designing greeting cards.” This budding greeting card business eventually branched off to other products such as macramé plant hangers and enamel pins. Involved in every step of the process, Molly designs all her greeting cards using Adobe InDesign and makes the macramé plant hangers by hand. Molly put into words what makes her products noteworthy, expressing, “I think jester foxe is

special because of the unique brand (jester foxe is named after an old Halloween costume of mine), and that all of my products aren’t classified into one category, you probably won’t find a lot of craft booths with both macramé and greetings cards mixed together.” You can find Molly’s creations sold locally at the Juice Box Café in Lakeland and occasionally at #hausmrkt. Check jester foxe out online at www.jesterfoxe.com.

Rane Made On Halloween of 2015, Raney Wade, who has been sewing for over a decade, launched her apparel business, Rane Made LLC. Rane attributes her comfortable, easy-to-wear aesthetic to being a Florida native. “Each piece of clothing you see on my website or at any pop-up is handmade by yours truly with the most comfortable fabrics and shapes. From patterning, to cutting, to sewing, to tagging–my hands are on each step. I am passionate creating clothing that breathes and can be worn effortlessly,” said Raney. Using soft, draping fabrics, Raney patterns, cuts, sews, and tags each piece of Rane Made clothing. For durability, she stitches each seam and reinforces all edges. Raney explained, “My patterns

feature comfortable ribbed necklines and raw hems. I often cut out batches of clothing and sew them all in an assembly order style system. I use two industrial sewing machines and one basic sewing machine for the tagging.” Rane Made clothing is unique, according to Raney, because, “I personally make each piece. My business model is set up so that there is minimal waste. I make each item as orders come in to eliminate over stock waste. My aesthetics are simple and easy-to-wear designs that can be worn effortlessly and do not cling.” Rane Made items can be found at www.ranemade.com where Raney also keeps her market schedule and updated list of events at which she will be selling.

Josh “Bump” Galletta Lakeland-based commercial artist and illustrator, Josh “Bump” Galletta uses his self-taught skills in collaboration with his clients to create works that are the embodiment of their combined visions done in a way that he describes as “simple, but detailed.” Galletta is married to Mary, has two kids, Emmersyn and Fynn, and the family’s dog Ellie. “I am a self-taught artist and specialize in creating dynamic designs with an organic typography feel. I use pen and ink in a minimalist style. I don’t wear a suit and tie to work; I roll up my sleeves and get down with pen and paper. I believe in going through every door and seeing where it leads. I also believe in working hard every day at my craft,“ describes Galletta. The artist does private commissions, branding, logos, t-shirts, portraits, and more for others, but still finds time to create for himself, saying, “I try to wear my heart on my paper. So hopefully that comes across when people see my work. I have really grown attached to our area as a whole, so a lot of my work is a nod to the Sunshine State. When it comes to the apparel side of my work, I want my shirts to be shirts that are fun to wear and that may strike up a good conversation. Also, they have to be ridiculously soft.” You can find any of Bump’s prints, originals, t-shirts, commissions, and other information at his website www.Bumpgalletta.com. Scout and Tag and A Kind Place also carry his work in their stores, and you can find him at markets such as Indie Flea in Tampa, Mass Market in Lakeland, and Concord Night Market in Lakeland.

Boondock Studios Husband and wife team Daniel and Stacy Tabb make practical pieces with leather, woven fiber and hand-cut stone. Want to learn it yourself? Stacy says,“We’ll teach these post-apocalyptic life skills to anyone in our studio in Lakeland, Florida. We’re not saying the zombie apocalypse is coming, but isn’t it better to be prepared?” Painting and drawing since childhood, Stacy inevitably branched out into sculpture, graphic design, HTML/CSS, and website design. Also during that time, the pair had two children and Stacy began learning leather work from Dan and taught herself weaving. Together the creative couple learned lapidary and now try to combine all three trades in as many artistic ways as possible. Dan was taught leather work as a child by his father. After a stint in the Navy and as a cartographer, an extended stay in the VA hospital caused him to pick up the craft again through the encouragement of doctors to do anything to maintain flexibility in his hands.

According to Stacy, “Dan can’t draw a straight line with a ruler, but he can make leather and stone jump through hoops.” Their handcrafted goods consist of key rings, wallets, weekender bags, bespoke corsets and beyond. “Our storefront also includes a wide variety of artists and makers, including goat’s milk soap, recycled jewelry, hand-dyed yarn, wood art, pottery, paintings, photographs, and ink drawings,” says Stacy. The duo can make your ideas a reality from scratch or add details such as pockets to an existing item. Check them out at their leather studio and shop at 811 N. Florida Ave., Lakeland. Their basic leather items and all instructional classes can be purchased through their online store at https:// boondockstudios.com. 15

Scout & Tag Celebrating 3 years in her downtown location, Nikki Hunt, owner of Scout & Tag, got her start selling painted pieces of furniture in 2013 at Downtown Lakeland’s Curb Market. A home and gift store mecca, this shop showcases a harmony of vintage and mid-century modern furnishings, home décor, and local gifts. Nikki commented, “As a local Stockist for Chalk Paint ® by Annie Sloan we specialize in painted furniture pieces and host classes teaching others. In addition, we have weekly girls’ night out painting projects at our 3,500 square-foot downtown storefront.” The shop specializes in Lakeland made and celebrated décor according to Nikki. “We have designed and work with local artist to create our popular Lakeland pillows, towels, t-shirts, mugs, Lake Signs, Lakeland Landmark Illustrations, Lakeland Metal Artwork and more,” she says. The Scout & Tag brick and mortar store is located at 244 N. Kentucky Avenue, in Downtown Lakeland. Their Lakeland-specific, vintage, mid-century modern pieces can also be purchased online at www.scoutandtag.com.

Seventeen20 Industrial modern furniture maker Jonathan Bucklew and his wife, stumbled into their trade by accident according to Jon. “We were remodeling our master bathroom and the tub my wife wanted was outside of our planned budget. She encouraged me to sell a dining table and bench set I had made on Etsy, so we opened a shop (using our street address as our shop name), and the rest is history!” he explained. Their creations consist of modern industrial furniture made of solid hardwoods and industrial steel, including tables, consoles, media storage, stools, benches, and beds. They design the pieces using an AutoCAD software and then make the pieces by hand in their shop in central Lakeland. With a couple of part-time employees, Jon and his team work together to cut, plane, join, sand, weld, and finish their pieces all by hand. When asked what makes his furniture different, Jon replied, “A couple of things—first, they’re all handcrafted here in Lakeland, rather than mass-produced and imported from overseas. We’re really proud of that. Secondly, they’re solid—solid steel and solid hardwood, as opposed to veneered. They’re easy to repair, if necessary, but also look awesome with age, as they patina and endure the common knicks or scrapes of everyday life.” Currently, Seventeen20 products can be found exclusively online on their website, www.seventeen20.com.

Loving Studios Loving Studios is an online store by Chad Loving. Chad produces original artwork prints, poetry, and handmade jewelry. He expressed that though he explores other occupations to support his creative endeavors, he is above all, an artist, remarking, “I create because I have something to say and a unique way to say it. I create because I want others to create. I create because I was created to. Loving Studios is the means by which I explore creativity in as many forms as I can, including paint, pencil, marker, food, wire, string, glass, ink, film, fabric, music, pixels, words, and ultimately, ideas.” Chad Loving has a B.A. in English from Southeastern University. Art is his passion. He currently lives in Plant City, FL. Chad uses local Plant City based Lark Printing to produce his prints. “My jewelry is also handmade and my materials are sourced from everywhere: craft stores, antique shops, flea markets, etc. I love to find something with history and restore or redeem it more than I love to create something from new materials,” he explained. Chad is inspired to create by boundless sources from literature, film, relationships, fashion, “the extraordinary found in the ordinary.” His collections come in seasons, much like fashion designers according to Chad. “A collection--be it of drawings, paintings, jewelry, poetry, or prose-has an overarching narrative and each piece, although unique, demonstrates a slice of that narrative. My work will change and grow, as I am constantly looking for ways to better myself and my techniques and create more fully realized work.” Chad’s portfolio can be found at http://lovingstudios.com/gallery and his creations at https://www.etsy.com/shop/LovingStudios. He tries to engage in at least two art shows or open markets a year and currently works at Copper Tree Beads in Downtown Lakeland which also carries some of his work.

Vintage Warehouse Vintage Warehouse is a home decorator’s dream with all things vintage, handmade, and repurposed. According to Mendy Michalec, “Vintage Warehouse was born because my garage was overflowing with vintage, garage sale and roadside finds! I just couldn’t get enough. So, I rented a warehouse to hold my goods and 49,000 Facebook likes later, my pickin’ ninja vendors and I search high and low for the best junk south of the Florida-Georgia line to keep them happy.” Many of items in the Vintage Warehouse are made from old furniture, salvaged and reclaimed wood. Mendy remarked, “We try to save the earth and use whatever we can get our hands on and marry it with something else!” Most of their pieces are finished with general finishes or milk or chalk-based furniture paint. Mendy says that Vintage Warehouse is unique because of the atmosphere they’ve created. One where their customers can, “visualize our items in their homes!” They also treat all their customers like family and take pride in being the “happy place” of many far and wide. You can shop through this décor haven at 4308 Wallace Rd, Lakeland, Thursday-Friday 9am-2pm, Saturday 9am-4pm, and on the last Sunday of the month 10am-2pm. They also have a St. Augustine location 950 Anastasia Blvd, St Augustine which you can shop at Wednesday-Sunday from 10am-5pm. They can be found online at, www.vintagewarehouselakeland.com or on either of their Facebook pages @vintagewarehouselakeland and @vintagewarehousestaugustine.

Ouroboros Laboratories Ouroboros Laboratories is a local operation run by Jonathan Mintle and his fiance, Haley Berg. They use the world around them to create natural essential oil health and beauty products. Jonathan laid out the pair’s products, saying, “What sets our essential oil products apart from the rest is that we actually forage and harvest our starting material by hand, then we steam-distill these oils from scratch, unlike the majority of E.O. sellers that are simply blending store bought oils and rebranding them.” He continued, “All of our material is

Heidi repurposes recycled sweaters from a dreary life trapped in the closet to become these little creatures. According to Heidi, “They were ‘knit’ and now they are ‘knit again.” Mainly selling through wholesalers and retailers around the country, you can find them in about 35 shops in 15 different states. Her talents exceed more than just giving life to little monsters, Heidi won the ArtPop billboard contest this past summer with a painting of her Knitagains. Currently they are working to distill wind-fallen foliage from the recent hurricane, titled their “Windfall Series.” The proceeds from this project will go to disaster victims affected by Irma according to Jonathan. with an assortment of bottle openers from bear heads, skulls, and even a rocket ship. According to Will, “Each piece is unique and one of a kind. I allow the wood’s natural attributes like color, size, imperfections or roughness to determine the design of the bottle openers or projects that I may be working on.” You can find WY New Creations online on their Facebook page @wynewcreations or at local stores Scout and Tag downtown, and Rocket Fizz at Lakeside Village.

been crafting beautiful things with whatever materials are at hand since the dawn of civilization. The most common products have always been household goods, clothing, personal ornament and children’s playthings. Penny Made Sara Kent of Penny Made, uses her talents to create handwoven tapestries and other fiber goods for the home. A quick peak on the Penny Made Instagram page shows off her handiwork from the very elaborate to the wonderfully simple through the use of different colors and patterns. Some of her creations include baskets, wall-hangings, stockings, and more. What makes her products all the more special is the fact that, “Each piece is made by hand from beginning to end,” according to Sara. She gives insight into her inspirations saying, “Inspiration for each item often comes from very specific places such as the beloved Wes Anderson movie, The Life Aquatic!” You can keep up with Penny Made on Instagram @pennymade where Sara says you can get updates on local market pop-ups and Insta-sales!

I Like Fred Lakeland resident Fred Koehler writes and illustrates children’s books through publishers like Penguin Random House and Highlights. Fred explained, “I thought some of the characters I created would look really cute on baby and toddler apparel, and that I could package the apparel with signed books to make truly unique baby shower and toddler gifts.” Fred works with local vendors to have bibs, onesies, and toddler tee’s screen printed. Focusing on quality over quantity, Fred has them made in small batches on name-brand apparel to ensure that they are, “detailed, multicolored reproductions” that are equal par or exceed anything found in retail stores. Fred explains what makes his products special, saying, “This apparel line really stands out. The biggest thing is that it’s all available with a matching book! Picture your little one reading about Little Jumbo the elephant while wearing Little Jumbo the elephant on a T-shirt. Cuteness like that breaks the internet! Second, all of this is coming straight from the artist’s studio, so your dollars directly support a local artist and his family. And finally, because of my background in graphic design, I’ve been able to hand-craft packaging and little extras to make this more than just a gift–it becomes an experience.” Fred is in the process of kick-starting an online store for his creations. His Kickstarter campaign and online store can be found at www.ilikefred.com. Scout & Tag, will also have some of the first, hot-off-the-press batches available.

Emory Anderson Artwork Born in Pennsylvania in March 1944, Emory Anderson Jr.’s appreciation for nature began at an early age with the scenic Pennsylvania countryside inspiring him. Post World War II, Anderson’s family moved to Punxsutawney until 1957 when they relocated and settled in Lake Wales. Emory attended Florida Southern College and later transferred to and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. With his knack for art, Anderson’s aunt, an art teacher, recognized his talents at an early age. Emory credits his aunt for encouraging and directing him in his creative pursuits. After deciding his profession at age 12, Anderson went on to become an architect both under self-employment and eventually for a prominent firm in Lakeland. Some of the major projects Anderson participated in include George Jenkins High School and Victory Assembly of God in Lakeland, as well as various professional buildings and public schools in the Central Florida area. Anderson now enjoys creating pencil and ink pen renderings, but focuses primarily on watercolor. According to Emory, his work, “reflects a strong architectural influence and incorporates a variety of buildings including, barns and homes.” He continued, “About half of the paintings or drawings are of actual places or subjects, others inspired by actual locations. Often a finished painting, even if it’s an existing subject matter, will include some changes to the subject–referred to as “artistic license.” Emory Anderson’s work can be found on his website, EAAndersonArtwork.com, on Etsy at EAAndersonArtwork, or on Instagram @eaandersonartwork. He can also be contacted via email at emory.anderson@verison.net or emoryandersonartwork@gmail.com.

A Kind Place Ida Mundell, describes herself as, “Wife to my sweet husband Nate, mom to 4 amazing kids, home educator, hugger of strangers, and owner of A Kind Place.” A Kind place features locally made, fair-trade, and give back goods according to Ida and operates as a mobile shop in their, “beautifully converted camper.” You can find fashion accessories, home goods, and much more at A Kind Place where they also curate items from local artists and artisans all over the world. Ida spoke about her quaint, unique shop saying, “When people walk into our little shop they always say, ‘this feels like home.’ We strive to create not just a place to shop, but a community of friends who use their spending power to do good locally and globally.” In pop-up markets all across Florida, Ida relays that the best way to keep up with A Kind Place is on their Instagram @akindplace. Art Centric Studio: Bringing the Arts Full-Circle for Lakeland

Becky Yohe was born to create and help others tap into their creative sides. An insightful, young, female entrepreneur, she used each chapter of her life as a brick to build her future. It was June of 2015 when Becky opened Art Centric Studio in the Dixieland Plaza in downtown Lakeland. They began moving into the space on a Saturday and started classes the following Monday with Becky saying, “We hit the ground running and never stopped.” Before Becky could hit the ground running, she added jobs to her repertoire over her career, that would eventually lead to this dream realization. In retail for nine years, Becky saw success in management and merchandising for a portion of that time. After getting married, she wanted a job that would allow her and her husband’s schedules to provide them time to spend together. Her father is a stained glass artist and her mother is a teacher. It was only natural that Becky applied to be an art teacher at a small Christian private school. Becky explained, “Art was in my blood and I majored in it in school as well with an emphasis in ceramics. I got a job teaching kindergarten through twelfth-grade art.” She continued, “It made me very flexible with transitioning quickly through age groups and things.” After building the school’s art program for a few years, Becky changed course. She gave birth to her daughter and decided she wanted to stay home, giving birth to their second child following. Once the girls were a bit older, she began teaching adult night classes at a studio, relaying, “That kept me picking up my paintbrush even though havenmagazines.com

I wasn’t teaching anymore.” While there, Becky did after school portfolio development for students, private lessons, and custom work.

they found out that the neighbors occupying the adjoining space were going to be moving which meant expansion without a change of address. In March of this year, they knocked the dividing wall down, opening up the studio and allowing them to now fit 45-50 people.

Four years into that, Becky’s husband was offered a position at South Eastern and the family decided to make the move from South Carolina, explaining, “We have family here, I’m a 5th generation Floridian so this just fit.”

When asked about being a young entrepreneur she described it as “a natural next step,” qualifying that statement with, “We are completely blessed. It was all God working all of this out–I still pinch myself that this is my job.”

Shortly after the move, people in Becky’s life started telling her it was time she opened her own studio, but it wasn’t until an encounter with a high school friend that those suggestions became the next chapter of her life. While greeting at church, Becky ran into her high school friend that she hadn’t seen in 10 years, Andy, who encouraged her to come to the opening of his coffee shop and look at some of the available spaces in the plaza for a potential studio. “We came for the opening of Concord Coffee and started meeting with the landlord and pieces just started fitting together,” said Becky, expressing, “This plaza is my heart.”

The name of the studio came from a list of potential names that she did research on, eventually landing on Art Centric by default, saying, “I like it. Centric is circle, it means circle, community, family to me and so to have an art space that is community and family-based was perfect.” The three circle windows that flood the studio with light and add a unique architectural touch to the space also enforce the sense of Art ‘Centric.’ The studio’s mantra displayed on its doors reads, “Encouraging creativity in you.” I encourage you to take a class, sign your children up for a class–support Art Centric as they foster a home for the creativelygifted and the creatively-curious in the Lakeland community.

Becky opened Art Centric Studio where she began offering portfolio development, after school, and homeschool classes. Homeschooled until the 8th grade, she recognized the need for a stronger art presence within the community and wanted to provide that to the homeschooled students.

https://www.artcentricstudio.com Desiring to have an art studio that was all-encompassing, Becky described the setup of the studio, “We had to make a studio that was transitional for everybody–that a kindergartener could sit and have space and an adult could sit and have space.” Into their second year,

PHOTOGRAPH Amy Sexson

Leslie Sikora Lakeland born Leslie Sikora has traveled the globe, picking up a great appreciation for art, architecture, history, and other cultures along the way. Though she’s seen much of the world, Lakeland’s charm and community encouraged her to put down permanent roots here. Leslie grew up and went to school in Lakeland and then to a prep school in Connecticut. After high school, she went to college in New York, eventually transferring to Georgia. As a child, her parents often traveled with Leslie, instilling a yearning to continue doing so. This lead to her move to England for a few years, all the while making her way across the continent. Leslie then moved back to New York to continue school, eventually coming home to the sunshine state.

The theatre since then has done a live season of concerts and performances, while continuing to show classic and independent films. Now, there are only 53 movie palaces left in the country, with 4 in the state of Florida, Polk Theatre being one of them. Leslie continued gushing about the theatre, saying, “I think the things I like the most about the Polk Theatre are just being in this environment with an amazing team of people that I have the pleasure of working with every day. That’s probably the most fun–because everybody has the same passion.”

“Coming back was not that hard because I have so many friends here. I love it here, it’s a small community and it has some large city feel to it in some capacities, especially when you’re downtown. It has all the components for a nice place to live,” explained Leslie. When she first moved back, she opened a few gift shops near Kissimmee which she ran for about 10 years. The commute from Lakeland to Kissimmee took its toll, resulting in her closing those shops.

An interesting thing about the theatre that maybe isn’t well-known according to Leslie, is that the office portion was built first, with the theatre coming almost a year later. You cannot access the theatre through the office spaces other than to walk out the front door and into the front doors of the theatre. The upstairs in unusable in its current state. The theatre is on track to kick off a capital campaign in December of 2018 for the theatre’s 90th birthday, to renovate it into a usable space and move the office portion there. The plan is to then use the bottom spaces as an expansion of the theatre itself with bigger concessions, community room, and an elevator.

Cutting ties with her shops afforded her more free time to do work she loved. Leslie worked in legislature with Paula Dockery when she was a member of the House and the Senate, and in time came to her current position as the president and CEO of the Polk Theatre. Even with her day jobs here in Lakeland, Leslie continued devoting her free time to serving on various non-profit boards she saw value in, saying, “Really, non-profit work in Lakeland was something I did throughout my whole life, even before I went to college.” She continued, “My parents were, I watched them growing up, I learned from them and saw what was important in the community and in your community as it were. I took my cue from them and that’s what I always wanted to do.”

Working in such a historic building, I had to ask if it was haunted. Leslie began her story about how she and a co-worker were walking into the doors of the theatre one day when they both looked at each other because they heard the organ playing in an empty theatre. Being a rationalist she tried to justify it, but another time walked into the dark theatre where she heard a woman singing. At the same time, a co-worker of hers that happened to be a singer, walked up. Leslie asked if that was her serenading, but it wasn’t. “You wouldn’t believe how many ghost groups that do those studies want to come in and spend the night,” exclaimed Leslie, continuing, “I would say there is some kind of energy here. I don’t know that I would say it’s haunted, but I would definitely say that there is an energy and things happen that are inexplainable, but nothing bad.”

Some of the boards she’s spent time on includes Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girls Inc., The Junior League and the Museum Board. Leslie also sat on committees and chaired the Tour of Homes to raise money for historic Lakeland, something she did for 3 years running.

Running Polk Theatre isn’t far from Leslie’s showstopper aspirations as a child. “I always thought I was going to be a famous musical comedy actress. When I went to theatrical productions with my mother, I think she held me down in my seat so I wouldn’t jump up and get up on the stage and dance about with all the people up there–it just felt natural!”

Her true passion showed itself when I asked her about her position at the Polk Theatre. “I feel like sometimes I lean forward in my car to get to work faster because it’s really a fun place to work, and there’s always so much going on here.” Leslie told me an animated story about how the Polk Theatre came to be. According to Leslie, the theatre was the idea of a local businessman who saw movie palaces going up at a rapid rate and decided to take on the endeavor. He purchased the property with the intentions of opening a movie palace but ran out of money during the project. It was then taken up by an organization called Publics Theatres which was a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures. When movies started to slow down and multiplexes began making a rise, “it looked like a wrecking ball was going to come and take this beautiful building away,” remarked Leslie. To save this landmark theatre, local citizens united to pull together enough money to purchase the building and turn it into a non-profit organization and restore it. The restoration took place through the 1980’s and 90’s and eventually had their opening theatrical production in 1998. havenmagazines.com

Unfortunately, Leslie developed crippling stage fright, putting a halt to that dream. It doesn’t stop her from performing in one way or another though, as she sings all the time, providing that no one is around. Aside from the Polk Theatre, singing, and traveling, Leslie also fills her time with needlepoint and reading. “My house is stacked with books,” she said, “If I didn’t have those, it just wouldn’t feel like home.” Leslie Sikora embodies the terms cultured and well-traveled. That isn’t all though. She also embodies a giver–a giver of her time, talents, and experiences to bring the very best of the Polk Theatre to the community of Lakeland, her home. 30

ARTS WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Art Crawl in Munn Park

5 years ago, Ellen Chastain, Education Manager at the Polk Museum of Art, thought that the robust art community of Lakeland and the surrounding Central Florida cities needed an event to shine a light on their talent and bring a community focus to art. She and her colleagues at PMA decided to put on the first Art Crawl in Lakeland.

event, that we could showcase local artists that don’t necessarily get the opportunity to showcase outside.”

Originally and up until this year, the Art Crawl was organized and put on by the museum with Ellen’s help, and held at the museum. This year, Ellen got permission from the museum to take the event outside of the museum and file it as its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with her taking charge as the founder and president.

From an outside perspective, it may look like the art scene is a new emergence for Lakeland and for Central Florida. Ellen explained that the arts have always been here and been a part of local culture, but continued, “I think the younger artists are now stepping up and trying to make a voice for themselves and kind of mold what they want to see here in Lakeland or in Central Florida itself. There’s been a growth in Orlando, there’s been a huge growth in St. Pete as well, I mean we aren’t the only ones. I just think it’s kind of like this initiative for an artist to really say, ‘Hey, this is mine, I want to do this, I’ve got to make it on my own.”

Ellen’s vision for the Art Crawl continues to be a platform to highlight new and innovative artists all around Central Florida promoting support, awareness, appreciation, and collaboration. She took me back to her idea for the event remarking, “An Art Crawl is typically a crawl of art galleries in a big downtown, but here in Lakeland we don’t have that. So, I wanted to try to create something, an annual

are here, one of the main things that we kind of strive for, not only are we here for the artists and to support the other arts organizations, but we’re here to promote art collection within the community.” The Art Crawl has regulated booths to have 75% of all work within it to be priced under $350, making it more accessible for the community to start their own art collections with pieces as affordable as $10-$20.

Art Crawl 2017 is an outdoor arts festival that has a lineup of 50 artists that will all gather in Munn Park on November 4th from 9 am to 4 pm, to display and sell their work, amongst local music and food vendors.

When asked why Munn Park was chosen as the location, Ellen explained that it is the heart of Lakeland and that, “Part of our mission as well is to bring people from outside of Lakeland here, including the artists, so they can see how great Lakeland really is and that we do have an art community here, so I think Munn Park itself is a great place.” Support your local arts community and join this year’s Art Crawl in Munn Park to start or add to your art collection. To connect with the Art Crawl or find out more information about artists, vendors, and sponsors, check out their website, http:// artcrawlfl.com or visit their Facebook page, @ArtCrawl.Inc.

Aside from artist recognition and collaboration, Ellen says she wants the community’s involvement as well, commenting, “With the 50 artists that

Florida Southern College’ s Annual All-Student Exhibition

Every year, Florida Southern College gives their underclassmen Studio Art and Graphic Design majors, a platform to display works they’ve created within the program to the public. This year’s All-Student Exhibition will kick-off with an opening reception on Friday, November 10th at 7 pm at the Melvin Art Gallery, with the exhibition staying up through December 8th. The esteemed Florida Art Award will be presented to a junior at the opening reception. I spoke with the Curator of the Melvin Art Gallery, Diane Baires for more information on the exhibition and the Florida Art Award. Baires explained, “We like to take the All-Student Exhibition to prioritize what has been done by our underclassman and for a lot of students, maybe they are in art history class with their peers and they’re in the same grade level, but not necessarily in the same program. It’s a good way to expose them to what their friends are doing and also to get them to look forward to what they could be doing as they progress through their degrees.” According to Baires, the Thursday before the opening reception, Studio

Art and Graphic Design junior majors, must go in front of the entire department including students and faculty within the program, and present and defend 5 works they’ve created within the arts program that best represents what they have accomplished in their academic careers.

out there, it’s something you can put on your resume, something you can feel proud of.” Dr. Alexander Rich, Assistant Professor of Art History at FSC, remarked that the opportunity for students to display their works on the white walls of a gallery gives them perspective on what it is like to show work in a more professional setting, saying, “I think it’s really exciting for students to be able to show their work in a gallery space and the fact that we are able to offer that kind of gallery space on campus for them is really important, and a really important part of our program.”

She further explained, “It’s basically to assess their progress through their years at Florida Southern and so the Florida Art Award is presented to a Studio Art junior. So, one of our students that is specializing in painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing or ceramics, that best defends their work and has an exemplary body of work.” During their critique, students will discuss things such as their original idea for the work, thought process, what it means, how they went about creating it, and why they chose a particular image or medium.

Diane Baires commented on what an asset this exhibition can be for the juniors in the program, “For the juniors, with the critique that they do the previous day, it’s a good way to engage and discuss their artwork on a professional level that prepares them for if they do decide to go on to graduate school. This is something that isn’t uncommon, they’re already getting their feet wet in how they discuss artwork.”

Diane says that they expect 25-30 students to participate in the event, and explained that some students tend to be shy when showing their work, so she encourages them saying, “Please submit this. This is really good, you want to have your artwork

Chef T’ s Garden Grill Off the beaten path of the main streets of Lakeland sits Chef T’s Garden Grill, an eatery that sets itself apart in both food and atmosphere. Formallytrained Chef Terry Doner has put his touch on every aspect of the restaurant, creating an intentionally exquisite environment. Chef T got his start in the restaurant industry as a server at the Floridian Restaurant at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel. Serendipity took over when he came into work one morning and the breakfast cook hadn’t come in. Pulled into the kitchen that morning, Terry had no intentions to go further, but discovered a passion for food which led him to become the lunch cook. Several months into this position Terry Doner knew he wanted to become a chef.

feel comfortable when they came here, but I also wanted to create an atmosphere that was nicer than a lot of the fast food restaurants and the chains that are out there.” He didn’t miss the mark with this goal. I went to Chef T’s for dinner and was pleased by every aspect of the experience. The servers were friendly and attentive and the environment was nothing less than ideal for a date night, business meeting, or family dinner. The restaurant is in a converted two-story, turn of the century 1920’s house. Instead of one main dining area, there are many smaller dining rooms, providing an intimate, warm feel.

From there, Chef T was promoted to Su Chef, Executive Chef, and Executive Chef of Banquets, spending a total of 15 years in the hotel industry when he decided to branch out on his own. He remarked, “I did that for quite a while and I just decided that I wanted something personalized something smaller, you know, that I could put my heart into and that’s when I decided to open up my own place.”

The history of the house itself, which can be found in detail on Chef T’s website, is very interesting. The home originally belonged to Olin Ionis Chiles and Frances Haley Chiles. The family occupied the home until Olin’s passing of Influenza in 1965, and Frances’ death in 1985. The article notes that Olin and Frances were the uncle and aunt to former Florida Governor Lawton Chiles who visited the pair often at their home. The era of the house was not lost in any of the updating and renovations to convert it into the restaurant, it still looks and feels like a turn of the century gem. The small rooms also lent themselves to a relaxed atmosphere devoid of the noisy chatter of a large one-room dining space. Even the spotlessly polished silverware was reminiscent of the style of the home with its stunningly embellished design.

I asked Chef Terry what type of atmosphere he had in mind when setting out to start his restaurant, to which he replied, “The ambiance that I was trying to create was something that seems to have been lost over the past 20 years, that small family-owned restaurant. Trying to get back into the fine dining without it being too fine dining. I wanted people to

After being seated, our server brought out bread that had a crunchy crust with a warm fluffy center, accompanied by perfectly piped butter on a separate dish. For dinner, I decided on the special for the evening, lamb chops. The New Zealand rack of lamb is marinated for 24-hours before being pan seared, oven roasted and served with a citrus

Chef T explained, “I wanted a more formal education, I wanted to learn more and that’s when I started going to the culinary school.” He pursued formal training at The Institute of Culinary Education in New York City.

rosemary demi glaze. I ordered mine medium and it came perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful. The lamb special came with steamed carrots that Chef T sautés in garlic, shallots, and tarragon, along with a serving of mashed potatoes. I was recommended the wild mushroom and vegetable rice pilaf as well and was not disappointed. Chef T holds the quality of his cuisine to high standards, saying, “I cook everything that comes out of the kitchen from the appetizers to the entrees. Today, tomorrow, yesterday, and always people can come here and know that I’m the one preparing the food.” We finished our interview with the Chef’s thoughts on his establishment, “I think it’s a place where people can get away and sit down and have a dinner, spend their time here and not feel rushed and I think that’s one of the things that makes Chef T’s special, and of course the food is very, very good.” The outstanding meal and experience I had, have me in complete agreeance with Chef T on that. www.cheftsgardengrill.com 1525 E Gary Rd, Lakeland, FL 33801 Open everyday 5pm - 9pm (863) 687-4386

Bill Lawrence: Carving Vinyl Being an artist means you have endless possibilities to express yourself. For Bill Lawrence, his artistic epiphany came five years ago. Looking on the walls of his studio, you see artists such as Pink Floyd, Prince, Chicago, Johnny Cash, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Elvis Presley to name a few.

make a three dimensional record.” He wants to add lights and give his customers more options with the vinyl art work they purchase. Eventually, he wants to carve a self-portrait of himself into a Led Zeppelin album, which is one of his favorite rock bands. When Lawrence isn’t laying tile or carving vinyl, he loves to play pool. “I have maybe 15-20 gold medals from the Billiard Senior Olympics [an individual competition],” said Lawrence, “My weekly pool team is called the Wild Hogs.” He is also a member of the American Pool Association. He loves spending time with his three grandchildren William III, Joshua and Ashlyn. His grandchildren love watching him make his records. “[When] they come over, they will sit down, watch me and create themselves,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence was looking at a picture of Jimi Hendrix on his wall one day, decided to draw it and then had an idea to transfer his image to a vinyl record. Today, he has over 125 images that he’s carved into vinyl. First, he chooses an image of a rock & roll icon and projects it on a wall to trace. From there, he cuts out a template to help transfer the image onto the vinyl. Once the image has been traced onto the vinyl, he uses a dremel to cut the image out. Finally, he uses an exacto knife to clean up the edges and then frames the finished product. “I have 50,000 albums,” said Lawrence, “I am always buying records.” His inspiration is infinite.

Lawrence shows his work in several art shows and festivals such as Mayfaire by-the-lake in Lakeland, Bloomin’ Arts Festival in Bartow and Artclectic in Nashville. He can even personalize a vinyl for a friend or loved one. Each one of his artistic designs sells anywhere from $120-200 based on if the album is newer, older and/or colored. “My best seller is the Beatles [album] with all four [of their] faces carved into it,” said Lawrence. Locals can purchase his vinyls at Jesse Carl Records in downtown Lakeland or on his website: www.recordartandmore.com

Originally from Bad Axe, MI, he grew up singing in the church with his mother. After battling a heavy life of drugs, he entered a Christian drug rehabilitation program called Teen Challenge. He moved to Florida with his parents the day he graduated from the program. He got a job installing tile and three years later he owned his own company, which has had continued success for 30 years. Lawrence has tried working with other types of materials but nothing has worked as well as the vinyl. “I’ve done a few CDs but they are so brittle,” he said. His first CD attempt of Frank Zappa ended up getting broken when he set it down. He has also worked with laser discs, which are harder on his hand due to the thickness of the disc. Lawrence has hit a few bumps while creating his art. He held off on doing the band, Grateful Dead for three years because it was hard to do. After completing The Little Mermaid for his granddaughter, he was able to attempt the Grateful Dead, which became one of his favorites aside from his first vinyl. Lawrence isn’t able to part with certain vinyls he has created such as Janet Lee, Black Honkeys, Fran Sheehan and Les Dudek, which have all been signed by the artists. “I’ll never give away my first one, as ugly as it is,” said Lawrence, “unless someone paid a lot of money for it.” Lawrence started by making bowls out of vinyl records. He also experimented with clocks, earrings and bracelets. He has so many ideas turning in his head. “When I do art shows, I have to go two dimensional,” said Lawrence, “I’d like to

No Two Days Are The Same: Passion, love and support are the key components to a successful career and a prosperous life. For John Fitzwater, his passion and love for writing and journalism started in high school. Fitzwater grew up in Somerset, Kentucky where he wrote sports articles for his high school newspaper. While attending the University of Kentucky, he became a sports editor and then was able to spend a year experiencing the news side of journalism. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Fitzwater had many opportunities not only to become a Publisher, but to travel to California, Texas, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. He’s worked for some of the greatest media in the US, such as the New York Times Regional Media Group, Gainesville Sun and The Ledger over the course of his 50 plus year career in journalism. Fitzwater also has a passion for helping out in his community. He is involved with United Way, the SPCA and a few chamber of commerce committees. He has since become heavily involved within the Lakeland community. “John is the best at leading a group that I know,” said his wife, Lu Fitzwater. He headed up a program in Gainesville, Ocala and Lakeland called Focus on Leadership. This program helps minority business people and government workers develop leadership skills and prepare for leadership roles in the community. Fitzwater was Vice Chairman on the Lakeland Economic Development Council (LEDC) board in 2003 and President in 2004. He was CEO for the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland (CFGL) for three years. “One of the greatest assets John possesses is bringing people together to better the community,” said Lu, “He volunteers and encourages others to get involved [to] bring their best game havenmagazines.com

to the table.” He also volunteered for the Salvation Army, Florida Council of 100, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine, Polk Museum of Art and the Tampa Bay Partnership. He received the George Jenkins award in 2009 while he was on the board at CFGL and a second time while he was on the board for United Way a few years later. “It was a very nice thing to have happen, unexpected,” said Fitzwater. It’s not just about nonprofits and writing for Fitzwater, he is a huge sports fan, whether he watches it on TV or attends the game. He loves golf, attends University of Florida basketball and football games as well as watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “I was on the Naval National Championship of Football,” said Fitzwater. He also likes to read and walk his dog, Missy. Most of all he’s avid about spending time with his wife of 34 years, daughter, son and grandson. “John is living life through his daughter, Katherine, who has followed in his footsteps,” said Lu. Spending time with his new grandson is one of his favorite things to do. “This is what I love,” said Fitzwater, as he showed off a picture of his one-year-old grandson. The best advice a retired publisher can give to current and future writers is simple. “When I first came to The Ledger, there were 100 people in the newsroom now there are 35 or 40,” said Fitzwater, “You’ve got to be flexible, you have to be willing to do different things and you have to be willing to learn [about] the internet [because] it’s an online business now.” Whether it was being the Publisher or helping out in all the communities he’s lived in, John Fitzwater shows us that hard work, dedication and passion will make a career prosperous and worthwhile. “No two days are the same,” said Fitzwater, “It’s always different.” 44

THE TURTLE HOSPITAL, MARATHON KEY An Organization Dedicated To The Rehabilitation Of Sea Turtles.

Since the late Jurassic period, sea turtles have been roaming the world’s oceans and maintaining the eco-balance of their marine habitat. Unchanged in physical appearance since they first appeared, the ecothermic reptiles are characterized by a fusiform body (that prevent extremities from being retracted), and long flippers. The adapted traveler has the ability to reach speeds of twenty-five miles per hour, and can remain underwater for seven hours. But their instinctive existence is facing a new challenge. Modern day sea turtles are fighting for their survival. Life is dangerous for these guardians of the sea. On the beach, hatchlings are fair game for birds, crabs, and raccoons. And if the miniature swimmers make it to the ocean, they are eaten by gulls and schools of fish. Predators are not their only enemy. The greatest threat to these ancient mariners is from humans. Killed for their meat, eggs, and shells, sea turtles also face habitat destruction and long-line/net capture by commercial fishing. After prospering for 110 million years, nearly all species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered. The Turtle Hospital was founded by Richie Moretti in 1986, a retired Volkswagen mechanic who came to the Florida Keys to relax and go fishing. Finding himself concerned for the environment of the ancient islands, Moretti purchased the Hidden Harbor Motel and began using the 100,000 gallon saltwater pool as an aquarium to educate others about sea life. In 1991, he expanded by remodeling the adjoining nightclub and created a turtle hospital surgical facility. Because of his efforts and those of the hospital, approximately one-hundred sea turtles are rescued and rehabilitated each year. With a motto of rescue, rehab, and release; and conservation as a mission, the hospital operates through four main goals: 1) Rehabilitate injured sea turtles, 2) Educate the public through outreach programs, 3) Conduct and assist in sea turtle research, 4) Work for environmental regulation to make beaches and water safe for sea turtles. Until November 2005, the hospital relied on proceeds from the Motel for its funding. After an overwhelming blow from Hurricane Wilma that year, the facility was totally submerged and closed to the public. Afterwards, during the rebuilding process, funding was sought by program fees, gift shop sales, donations, and grants. Although sea turtles face shark attacks & infections, the majority of injuries are consequently caused by human interaction. Frequent admissions to the hospital are from the ingestion of plastics including fishing hooks and plastic bags. Entanglement by fishing line and trauma injuries from boat collisions are also devastating. The Turtle Hospital uses many licensed veterinarians with their primary vet being Dr. Terry Norton of Georgia Sea Turtle Aquarium. The hospital uses up-to-date equipment to perform the variety of surgeries required. More than half of the equipment has been donated by concerned individuals and local hospitals. With the help of many Universities, including the University of Florida, cooperative research of Fibropapilloma is being studied. The infectious disease leads to blindness resulting in the inability for the sea turtle to feed. havenmagazines.com

Seven species of sea turtles have survived to modern times. Five of the species are found in Florida and are protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973. That includes the loggerhead, green, hawksbill, leatherback, and the rarest sea turtle in the world, Kemp’s Ridley. Before conservation strategies were in place, the hawksbill, (named for its beak), was hunted close to extinction for their shells to make jewelry. After receiving successful treatment and rehabilitation at The Turtle Hospital, sea turtle patients are returned to the wild from beaches or launched from a boat several miles from land. Public releases are announced in the hospital’s blog or through social media. Sea turtles play a vital role in the health of underwater ecosystems by eating seaweed. That maintains deep water grass beds and provides a breeding ground for shrimp, crabs, minnows, and numerous other sea life. Without the presence of sea turtles, the lower level of the food chain would become extinct. Female sea turtles take 20-25 years to reach sexual maturity, so egg-laying is vital to the species survival. Overdevelopment of beach nesting sites has interrupted that cycle. The loggerhead has showed a forty percent drop in beach nesting sites since 1998. In Mexico, thousands of turtle eggs are taken from nests each year and sold on the black market. Activists have asked people to support “Don’t Eat Sea Turtle” campaigns. The Turtle Hospital, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, was the first state-certified veterinary turtle clinic in the world. Location: 2396 Overseas Highway (mile-marker 48.5). Guided tours are 90 minutes. Cost: $22.00 (adults). $11.00 (children 4-12 years old). Reservations: 305-743-2552. Internet site: turtlehospital.org. Hurricane Irma Update: Owner Richie Moretti and Turtle Hospital Engineer, Tom Luebke stayed in Marathon through the storm. Other staff members returned after. The hospital suffered light damage to the building and shade awnings but thanks to the 30,000 gallon hurricane tanks, all the turtles fared well. Power to the water tank pumps and medical refrigerators were supplied by the onsite generators. “We fed the turtles before the storm and made sure they were secure,” says Megan, turtle hospital Education Specialist. After the storm, the sea turtles were fed again and given their medicine. While the clean up was taking place, a new arrival was brought to the facility by a Monroe County Emergency employee. The green sea turtle had been found trapped inside a huge mound of debris. Moretti says her name is “Irma” and she is doing well. Owner Moretti and the loyal staff members express sincere thanks to the first responders and supporters for all the well wishes and help. In two weeks time, The Turtle Hospital has installed new shade awnings for the tanks and reinstalled their billboard signs that had fallen. They are again open for business.
