LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hello and welcome to our magazine, Haven. We are new to Lakeland but no strangers to Polk County and Central Florida. Actually half of our staff call the city of Lakeland home. Haven is part of the Sun Central Media Group. with sister papers and magazines along the gulf coast. SCMG is the evolution of the media company that has provided news to Bartow, Lake Wales, Frostproof and Fort Meade for almost 90 years. So yes, we are local. Locally owned, operated, and invested in our communities.. We are creators of local content and we believe the evolution of your local publication is to stay connected. Read us in print or online the first of every month. Our motto is to live in the moment and support your community. Each month we will bring you a road map to what is happening locally. A magazine that helps you squeeze every last ounce (citrus pun) of culture and experiences in our community. Add in features on what’s new and next, local people making a difference, the largest calendar of events published in print or online and you have our vision for Haven Magazine.
people that are making a change and fighting for the greater good in our community. Lakeland is growing faster and faster every day. We will be part of the rising tide and look to the future while respecting the past. This month is breast cancer awareness month. We are honored to share some stories of Lakeland survivors. They were very candid and open about their experience and we thank them. The flowers on the cover were purchased at Lasater Flowers in Winter Haven. We have to thank them for bending over backwards to get them. Irma was fast approaching and shipments of flowers had stopped. But they did it, and they’re beautiful. Thank you to Mike Potthast and everyone at Potthast Studios. They are the nicest people and didn’t mind being flexible after Irma took out power in the studio for a week. We hope you take a few minutes to look through our pages and again thank you for the opportunity to bring our brand of media to Lakeland. Sincerely, Amy Sexson, Editor HAVEN Magazine asexson@scmginc.com
We are truly grateful to bring you this magazine each month. We promise to always be available, work hard and support all organizations and

LOCAL NEWS WORDS Barry Friedman/LkldNow.com
DOWNTOWN AFTER DARK Downtown Lakeland used to shut tight when the office workers drove home. No longer. Recent announcements signal downtown’s evolution as a dining and nightlife district. New businesses in the works include Revival, a craft cocktail lounge at 119 S. Kentucky Ave.; Tsunami Sushi at 114 N. Tennessee Ave.; Screaming Tuna, another sushi restaurant, at NoBay Village; the expansion of Palace Pizza into space once occupied by Hurricane Alley; and two restaurant/bars planned for the restored Federal Building: a Mojo BBQ-whiskey bar and The Federal Bar from the owner of Masons Live.
WE’RE VOTING REBEL, REBEL Registered voters within city limits have several decisions to make. They’ll be voting Nov. 7 on a new mayor, three city commissioners and whether to change the structure of city government. A group called Committee for a Strong Lakeland wants a system where voters elect a “strong” mayor who runs all of the city departments (except Lakeland Electric). On the other side, a group called No Boss Mayor wants to preserve the current system, where the City Commission hires a city manager to run the entire administration. Voters can select “yes” for strong mayor or “no” to keep the current system.
It took Hurricane Irma to temporarily hush the loud arguments over the Confederate monument in the middle of Munn Park. One side says it’s the wrong centerpiece image for a forward-looking city trying to attract young creatives and high-skill workers. Another side says the statue of a soldier represents heritage and they resent efforts to erase history. A third group suggests adding a companion monument commemorating the struggle for civil rights. City commissioners are inviting a wide array of interested groups to plead their cases at a public meeting before deciding what, if anything, to do with the much-debated memorial.
PLAYING ON HISTORY
FORMERLY THE LAKELAND AIRPORT CENTER TAKES OFF
One of Lakeland’s largest playgrounds was dedicated recently, thanks to the four local Rotary Clubs and a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland fund-raising idea: “Let’s put on a show!” Concerts featuring the Beach Boys, America, Three Dog Night and Wilson Phillips raised $300,000 to supplement city funds in creating Rotary Park at Hernando’s Landing. The park overlooking Lake Parker plays on legends that explorer Hernando de Soto passed this way and includes two zip lines and a Spanish galleon-shaped climbing/slide structure.
It opened in 1974 as the Lakeland Civic Center. Then it was The Lakeland Center. Now it’s the RP Funding Center, a name that resulted from a sponsorship deal that emerged when the cityowned entertainment venue became an NBA facility as home to the Lakeland Magic, the development team of the Orlando Magic. The venue is undergoing a $14 million renovation to upgrade the arena and convention facilities. A recently announced second hotel on the property is expected to boost efforts to attract conventions.

The NOAA Hurricane Hunters and their aircraft moved into their new 106,000-squarefoot headquarters at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport just in time for Hurricane Irma. The airport continues expanding and adding new tenants as it has invested more than $100 million, mostly in federal and state grants. Another tenant recently announced: Griff Aviation North America, which builds drones capable of lifting several hundred pounds of cargo.

LKLDTV SIGNS OFF
LOVERS’ OAK
Randy Borden’s vision to provide a local TV station led to the creation of LkldTV, a scrappy startup that produced online videos telling the stories of people and organizations trying to make Lakeland a better place. Alas, advertising support was insufficient to keep the information service running, and Borden was forced to lay off the staff of six and shut the service. LkldLive, a non-profit entertainment venue based in Borden’s LkldTV building, remains operating for now.
After Hurricane Irma toppled once-mighty oaks all over town, the conjoined trees known as The Lovers’ Oak still reigned over the corner of Success Avenue and Lake Morton Drive. The persistence of the tree, which is said to predate Lakeland, has renewed citizen efforts to save it from chainsaws. The oak sits on city right of way, and City Hall announced plans to chop it down after a falling branch nearly totaled a passing car and three arborists declared it unsafe.
PLANTING AN URBAN FARM
MEGABUS ROLLS IN
An “urban farm” that serves as an entrepreneurial laboratory for Lakeland Christian School students is set to open Oct. 26 at the Mass Market redevelopment project just north of downtown. Spearheaded by teacher Jennifer Canady, the thirdof-an-acre garden project benefitted from a $63,245 grant from the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency as part of its efforts to revitalize the Parker Street neighborhood.
The Megabus inter-city bus service known for wifi and cheap fares, has motored its double-decker buses into Lakeland, offering service to Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Miami. Routes leave from the newly opened Gow B. Fields Park-and-Ride lot on U.S. 98 just south of I-4. The Citrus Connection local transit service attracted Megabus, in part, by offering free rent the first year.

STRONGER TOGETHER
havenmagazines.com

The following pages are about 5 people going through life like normal. Probably a lot like the days we all have, kids, dinner, work, errands, the never ending list of things we have to do. The only difference is, in the midst of the chaos of life, these women and one man were all diagnosed with breast cancer. And yet, they stayed strong. In fact, all of them say they became even stronger throughout the process. Can you imagine? You’re going through life, making dinner, going to work, it feels like you have control. And suddenly, you realize you don’t. It puts life in perspective. Be proactive with your health. Do self exams. 3 of the 4 women had clear mammograms just months before they got their diagnosis. Many had no family history of breast cancer. As you will learn from these women, thinking and living in a positive way will get you through the darkest times. According to breastcancer.org, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. For those that will be diagnosed, be your own advocate. Do your research. Allow yourself to feel and accept support from those around you. Knowledge is power. To the survivors: you are my hero. The mental and physical challenges that you must endure are horrific. The strength and grace you display after nature and science has ran its course, is admirable. Thank you for sharing your story. WORDS Amy Sexson

Cathy Hall Survivor Though Cathy credits her family for being her biggest system of support through her diagnosis and treatment, she also acknowledges how her friends pulled together for her, saying, “I also have a great, great circle of friends. I tear up now just thinking about it because you know, you expect your family to be there for you, but when you have friends that bring you food, clean your house, just take care of you, it makes all the difference in the world.”
Cathy Hall, who just turned 60 in July, is a wife to her husband Kirk of 33 years. She is a mother to two grown children, a son that sadly passed away and has 2 grandchildren that she adores. Cathy works for Lamar Advertising, but also pursues her love of painting old vintage windows as both a hobby and a small side business. It was 2003 when Cathy first started working for Lamar Advertising. According to her, she had been there for about a year when she felt a lump on her breast. She had had a mammogram 6 months prior and everything was clear, but she knew this small round lump that she described as “like a marble” both in size and shape, was not normal.
Cathy says that she now looks back on her breast cancer experience as an overall positive one and as only “a short time in her life.” 2 years after her diagnosis, her husband, Kirk, was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and given less than a 50% survival rate, odds that he eventually beat. Two years later, they lost a son who was 19 years old. Cathy put it all into perspective, “I can look at the big picture and see that a cancer diagnosis in my situation, and this would not be in everybody’s because everybody has different stages and I’m not stupid enough to think that cancer cannot come back to me again, but in my life picture it was a small, short time, it was not a traumatic time, it was a difficult time.”
Cathy called her doctor that day, who sent her straight to the breast specialist where Cathy had a biopsy. The very next day, Cathy was told that she was positive for Stage 1 breast cancer. Initially, the news hit Cathy hard as she explains, “I’d like to say that I was brave and strong, but that initial shock is very difficult to grasp. There’s no cancer in my family, I didn’t even know anybody, I was only like 45 years old. I didn’t even have any friends that had had breast cancer so it was all very traumatic for me, that initial blow.”
She couldn’t have gotten through this difficult time in her life without her faith, says Cathy, remarking, “God put me on this earth to ‘live well,’ cancer scared me, but it did not take me, it was not my time.”
After the shock wore off, Cathy knew that the only thing to do was to get with her doctors to decide on a course of action for her treatment plan and “take care of business.” She remarked, “When you get a diagnosis of cancer, there’s no down time. You have to be proactive and you have to start working on it from that point and moving forward because you don’t want it to get any worse.”
Cathy explained that since her diagnosis she has lost friends to cancer, “My faith tells me every single day that for them and for myself and my family, I should always live well.” Cathy’s advice to anyone is to do self-breast examinations. She found her own cancer, when 6 months prior there was nothing visible in the mammogram.
Cathy had a lumpectomy followed by radiation treatments, an experience she describes as a good one. Through treatment, she became friends with everyone there from a man that met her at the door named Richard, to the receptionists, and the medical professionals. Cathy felt secure that these new friends of hers would take care of her.
She leaves readers with a final piece of advice, “Do your examinations and if you find anything peculiar that is not typical, you’ve got to be proactive and you’ve got to be your biggest advocate. Have it checked, have it looked it, because you’re the best assessor of what’s going on with your body.” WORDS Tara Crutchfield

Heather Trojan Survivor current circumstances.
Connecticut born, Lakeland resident Heather Trojan is an Adjunct Professor of Education by career and describes herself as an Integrative Health Coach by calling. She is very active in yoga, exercise, and meditation and cares for her body by eating healthily.
In 2015, Heather learned that her cancer was metastatic. This diagnosis, though hard, has brought Heather the opportunity to do what she does best, be of service to others. She explained that she sees her diagnosis and “health storm” as she called it, as a way to be a service to others through sharing her story and providing hope and inspiration.
Heather got her mammogram in February of 2011, but nothing was detected. In September of the same year, she performed a self-breast exam, something that she now strongly advocates for, as she found a lump.
Heather shed light on the term “health storm” saying that it came from a Chinese Medicine Healer that she was seeing in California. She explained, “A storm has a beginning, it has its pinnacle, and there is an end to it.”
Living in Studio City, California at the time, she went to Dr. Tina Koopersmith to let her know what she had discovered and how to proceed. The doctor suggested Heather have a biopsy after the results of which came, she got a dreaded call from Koopersmith saying, “Heather, it’s cancer.”
Being that Heather takes action to care for her body and even in the midst of her diagnosis, she says that she herself was her biggest supporter, revealing, “Everybody’s journey is an individual journey and unless you’re walking in someone else’s shoes, you do not know what that person is going through so as much love as I have for family, friends, even strangers, people I’ve met personally groups or online in groups, it’s just an individual journey and I had to be my own advocate and empower myself.”
After Dr. Koopersmith’s call to give her the news, Heather rushed to her office to have BRCA testing to see if her cancer was hereditary as she had two biological aunts on her mother’s side of the family that had had been diagnosed prior to her. She immediately called her brother to deliver the news to her family, saying, “I was in ‘fight’ mode. Fear and anger took a momentary backseat.”
There are a few misconceptions about breast cancer that Heather wanted to bring light to. Number one, most breast cancer is hormonal and not hereditary according to Heather. Number two, mammograms are important, but self-breast exams are equally important. And lastly, there is no specific way someone with cancer looks. She continued, “A lot of side effects or collateral damage is invisible. You can’t see someone’s pain in their bones or nausea so I think there’s a lot of misconception about what cancer is supposed to look like.”
She expounded on that thought, “I didn’t have time to go through the emotional roller coaster, as I call it, at that moment. I was just determined to do what I needed to do at that moment to gather all the information upfront to make the most educated decision since there is no answer, there is no answer to cancer.” Taking action led to Heather having a lumpectomy and 7 weeks, a total of 35 sessions, of radiation. She was put on Tamoxifen, a drug which she took herself off of after 26 months because it was “too much” for her body.
Through treatment and beyond, Heather has focused on continuing her exercise and socializing, which she says is important with such an isolating diagnosis. After it all, she says that everything has changed, placing importance on her attitude, relaying, “I just celebrate when I go for that bike ride or go for that run so maybe I don’t run as fast and as long anymore, but I still do it.”
“With the initial diagnosis, each morning I woke up, I went to yoga, then I went to radiation, then I rested and if I had to work that afternoon, I worked that afternoon,” she described how she kept her daily routine. She even inspired her radiation tech to start exercising regularly as she was inspired by Heather’s ability to continue living life normally through her

Samantha Wiemer Survivor Samantha Wiemer is 43 years old, married, with one 14-year son. Originally from Ft. Meade, she lives in Tampa and works in the healthcare industry where she spends a lot of time driving in her car all over central Florida.
and never covered it up.
December 2014, Samantha went in for a 3D mammogram. It was a routine check that came out clear. She expected this, there’s no family history of breast cancer. Life goes on and breast cancer is the last thing on her mind.
Treatment ended December of that year. “It felt like it took forever,” she said.
In May 2015, her son became sick with a bad cough. It spread and soon she also got sick with a very bad cough. Samantha says, “I got sick, by the grace of god.” Samantha started feeling pain behind her right breast. Worried it could be an infection, she went to her General Practitioner. In a bone scan, she found out that she had coughed so hard, she actually fractured a rib under her right breast. While there to get her rib looked at, the doctor also did a breast exam and felt something out of the ordinary. They squeezed her in for an ultrasound and a biopsy on that Saturday.
Her mother-in-law was her support during surgery. Her mom stayed with her during chemo. Even her niece came to help out with the house. “I had the most amazing support system,” She said proudly.
The following Thursday, she was in her car driving for work when she got the call. Samantha was diagnosed with stage 2 ductal carcinoma.
Even though Samantha is a survivor, she says she always has the fear it will come back. She sat comfortably for so long because she had no history of this in her family and her previous mammogram came out clean.
“I wanted women to see my bald head and ask questions. I want them to do self exams and go get checked.”
Throughout it all, family was her biggest support. “My husband is a rockstar. He took care of me.”
Two weeks after she was diagnosed, a friend of a friend was given an almost identical diagnosis. They were able to connect and talk to each other and totally relate. “All of the things that happen to your body during chemo, that people don’t understand, it was nice to have someone to talk to about it,” she recalled.
“I was driving. I turned around, went home, fell apart, cried and then got back in my car. I went back to work.”
“Self exams. Do self exams. Don’t rely on your family history.” She describes how it was difficult to do the self exams because she has very dense breast tissue.
She thought, what do we do? What’s the plan of attack? What do I do next?
“It’s harder to find. It’s like finding a snowball in a snowstorm,” she explained. Samantha wants to educate women and why the density matters. She feels like if she would’ve learned about this earlier, maybe she could’ve found it sooner.
Within the next few days she started a Facebook page called Screwpink. “I wanted people to know. I wanted to educate people. The more people that knew, the more therapeutic it was for me.”
After all of this, how has life changed for Samantha? “Life feels more normal now than it did two years ago.” Her Facebook page Screwpink is still going strong, women message her with their stories. She writes, “I’m here in the hopes of helping others endure this. While each cancer or breast cancer journey is different, there is also so much that’s the same.”
She was diagnosed on April 9th, got married on the 25th and went in for a bilateral mastectomy on May 6th. The wedding was already planned, it was supposed to be in California. After the diagnosis, those plans changed. They stayed in town and had a smaller “engagement party” with friends and family. Samantha went through chemotherapy and many rounds of radiation. During this time, she lost her hair

Stacey Fulse Mosley Survivor cancer. Her fingers and arms are swollen with a fluid build-up from where she had her lymph nodes removed, something she wears a compression glove for 12-14 hours a day.
58-year-old Stacey Fulse Mosley, a Christmas baby, will be 59 this Christmas. She is a mother to a son and step-daughter, and grandmother of 2. She lives in Fort Meade with her husband Keith, where she is now retired from the Mosaic Company with whom she worked for 28 years.
She doesn’t look at her diagnosis and the years following with pessimism. She said, “My cancer could have been worse, but it wasn’t. Going to a cancer center and seeing other cancer patients with these different cancers, I know that God took care of me.” She continued to say, “It let me know that there are people out there that have bigger problems than I do.”
While working for Mosaic, Stacey explained how every year, a radiology and imaging specialists (RIS) truck would come on site for employees to be examined. Stacey did this every year to be proactive with her health, but received unexpected news in 2010. After her breast exam in 2010, Stacey received a call that she would need to have a biopsy done. The biopsy revealed a cancerous lump in her right breast.
With everything she went through and seeing family and community members passing away from the disease, Stacey knew she wanted to help women in any way she could.
Stacey recounted what happened when she got the call, “I went on my own after they called me. I didn’t tell any family members, I didn’t want anybody to get upset because I had a family of women that had passed from breast cancer.”
“I’m involved with a group of young ladies from Fort Meade that saw a need to have a team on the south side of Fort Meade to raise funds for the Cancer Society,” Said Stacey.
At the first appointment, Stacey felt like she wasn’t fully grasping what the doctors were telling her and called her sister-in-law, who was a pharmacist to come with her and explain anything she didn’t understand.
Team Southside, which is now comprised of about 30 women, was started by a woman named Shonda Nelson, according to Stacey, who asked her directly if she wanted to be involved. She accepted the invitation and has been an active member ever since as she believes the organization “brings women together.”
She took her sister-in-law with her to break the news to her family as well.
Stacey described going to breast cancer treatments with her aunt when she was diagnosed and how it was different from her experience. Even looking in from the outside in a situation with a close friend or family member is not quite the same she relayed, saying, “It was different for me than what she went through and the difference was she knew, from being a nurse, the facts and symptoms, and I really didn’t.”
With the news setting in, Stacey began her treatment. She had a lumpectomy to have the lump removed and then set out to have 34 treatments of chemotherapy and 18 treatments of radiation. Stacey remarked on the family support she felt during her treatment at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center, saying, “I had a lot of support from my uncle. He took me up there and sat with me from 8:30 to 2 while I got my chemo treatments. My husband went with me also, and when he was working, other relatives would take me up there.”
She concluded her thought by doling out sound advice that comes from her experience, saying, “The best thing I can tell any woman is that they need to check their breasts regularly, they need to have a mammogram every year.”
Now, with her diagnosis distancing in years, Stacey still suffers a multitude of ailments, some from the

Ronald Oakley Survivor Ronald ‘Ron’ Oakley is a 64-year-old Lakeland native and jeweler. Ron has one daughter and has been a jeweler since the age of 13. He has 50 years of being a master jeweler under his belt with experience designing, repairing, and everything in between. He owns the familiar Lakeland jewelry business, Oakley Jewelers.
“At first it was a very large shock. I just couldn’t believe it and then I just found peace. I prayed fervently for days and I just said, you know what, God has used me in so many ways, he will see me through this also,” said Ron. He continued, “I just got immersed in the fact that God is my healer and he was in total control.”
At the time that Ron began experiencing symptoms, he was married, with his wife working at Watson Clinic. When he complained of a sore area on his breast, his wife insisted he go to the doctor and have it checked on.
They started a chemotherapy regimen to shrink the cancer before they could operate. When the cancer had shrunk and the doctor was able to operate, they took 3 lymph nodes out where they found that the cancer had moved and his diagnosis then changed from a stage 1 to stage 2.
He explained why he waited to go to the doctor. It was a busy before Christmas, he wanted to wait until the store settled down, saying, “Being a retail jeweler, it was important that I stay focused on my business instead of worrying about something that was probably just a cyst. Who would have dreamed that a man would have breast cancer?”
According to Ron, they went in a second time, taking even more lymph nodes and sending him on the road to recovery. His family, church family, and employees at his jewelry store rallied around him to make treatment as comfortable as possible, keeping his spirits up, they helped him get through it. Not one to be knocked down, though it was difficult, Ron continued to work the entire time he was going through chemotherapy, using the weekends as his time to recuperate as best he could.
About a month later, with the spot still bothering him, Ron went to the doctor. “That’s just hard to believe and you never hear of it,” he said when the doctors told him that breast cancer could be a possibility. Ron remembers a doctor or nurse expressing to him that though males are only 1% of those diagnosed with breast cancer, the mortality rate is high for them in Ron’s words, “because we’re oblivious to the fact that men get breast cancer too, and just kind of deny it, like that couldn’t happen to me.”
Ron commented on the chemotherapy saying, “My body, 2 years after the fact, is still reeling from the ramifications of taking this therapy because it just changes your body.” Ron Oakley has walked away from the unique experience of being a male breast cancer survivor with his sights set on what’s important in life, saying, “Don’t sweat the little stuff, choose your battles, live life more fully, and it’s not what you have, it’s who you have. Your relationship with others and with family are so important and material things, they’ll fade away.”
It took a few weeks to get the biopsy back, but when they did, it was found that it was an aggressive form of cancer that required immediate action. With Ron being in that 1% of male breast cancer patients, he knew that he had to come to terms with the news, and get started on a treatment plan, placing his health and his trust in God’s hands.

LKLD Creative Makers
Lakeland’s creative scene is getting organized an expanding with a group formed by three local creators. This group called, LKLD Creative Makers, is facilitating the networking and connection of local creators to learn more about their trades, find people to collaborate with, and network with each other. In speaking with the talented trio behind this project, Josh ‘Bump’ Galletta, illustrator, Becky Yohe, owner of Art Centric Studio, and Sunny Balliette, illustrator and graphic designer, I found out that the name, Creative Makers, was just as intentional as their mission to connect creatives. It was a way to be inclusive of all creators explained Becky, creators being a much broader term than simply ‘artist’. Sunny added that it was “all-encompassing including musicians, artists, writers, bakers, everybody.” Becky shed some light on the inception of the group saying, “Bump and I met after we had gone to a conference and started talking about trying to have some source for creatives to network and connect, so we met and brainstormed what that might be like for Lakeland.” The group meets once a month, usually on the first Monday of the month at 7pm. They change host locations every time according to Bump, and usually start off hearing from the host for a few minutes, moving on to the main speaker. Afterwards, the floor is opened to a Q&A session followed by announcements of any creatorrelated events coming up that could benefit the audience.

“The whole idea is to just connect all local creative artists and makers, it’s not just the visual arts it’s anything, so we’ll have a large variety of people and talents there,” remarked Bump.
three that started it with Sunny commenting, “I mean, we definitely all felt this same desire to want to come together and do this, but really it’s just that response from other people participating and there was an obvious need.”
Now with the project in full-swing, their numbers continue to grow, causing them to turn down hosts because of the sheer size of the crowd they pull in. For their very first event, they expected 10-20 people and were astonished when about 60-70 came. Their events now range from 70-90 people with no indication of a slowdown.
LKLD Creative Makers offers an open place to connect with like minds, an inclusionary networking event for all creatives, inviting even those that don’t consider themselves creatives to check it out. You can engage with the group at their website www.lkldcreativemakers. com, on their Instagram at lkldcreative, or their Facebook page LKLD Creative Makers.
I asked the three how they choose their speakers for each event. They expressed that discussion and collaboration go into the decision and that they seek out local creators, with Bump adding his thoughts, “Someone who’s covering a great message, a great story. Somebody that can tell us the highs and the lows so that we can all connect with that and learn from it.” Becky added, “We’ve had different various speakers that are local either entrepreneurs, business owners, that are really inspiring anyway, but to know who they are, put a name to the face, and feel a little more connected to your town.” Sunny expressed their interest in the group making central Florida more of a hub for arts instead of only the larger cities. “There is another group that has formed in Plant City so it is expanding for sure.” I asked if they were affiliated to which she said, “Yes, they came and were inspired by our group and what we were doing and then they wanted to start one there.” Participants in the events and on the group’s social media, continue to exceed the expectations of the 30

Polk State College Celebrates 50 Years of Theatre
It was earlier in Spring of this year when Mark Hartfield, the professor of theatre and theatre program coordinator at Polk State College got an email about a big event sneaking around the corner. With all the planning, rehearsing, and performing that goes into running the program, he didn’t think about the fact the theatre program at Polk State was approaching its 50th anniversary until the man who started it all, Norman Small, reminded him. According to Hartfield who’s been with the college since 2011, it was 50 years ago, in the fall of 1967 that a 22-year-old Norman Small directed the first play for Polk State, Antigone. He directed a play called Bus Stop the following spring, and the college continued to put on two productions a year until 2009 when they bumped it up to four. Hartfield went on to explain how the theatre program functioned in years past saying, “The early years, there was no theater. They were performing at the Student Center and the Women’s Club, which had a little theater space. When they constructed the Cypress Gardens Community Center where Theatre Winter Haven is, they did some performances there until they finally built this facility in 1980.” Throughout the years, the theatre program has been handled by talented professors with Norman Small running it until the early 1980’s according to Hartfield. From then until 2009, George Randolph served as the professor of theatre who then passed it on to Paul Carbonell, and currently Mark Hartfield runs the program.
The productions for this celebratory year were chosen before the anniversary was brought up to Hartfield, about which he said, “Honestly, it’s sort of serendipity that we had chosen a kind of light, fun season that had some new things and some old things in it.” The 2017-2018 theatre season for Polk State includes Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin, The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Looking into the future for the next 50 years, Hartfield says he is focused on recruiting more students for the theatre program, increasing academics, and working to improve their already shining production quality and value. Hartfield says they have a great technical theatre and look to entice more students to the program because of its value. Studying theatre at Polk State College can earn students their Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, setting them on a path to attend one of Florida’s major universities to obtain their Bachelor’s Degree.
Small also commented on theatre within the area saying, “When I moved to Winter Haven, there was one community based theater, now there are four. That says something for either the audience that appreciates the arts or the hard work of those who bring it, or a combination of both.” You can connect with the theatre on their Facebook page, Polk State Theatre, or by visiting their website, www.polk.edu/theatre which has all the information about upcoming shows, auditions, academics, and box office. Congratulate Polk State College’s theatre program on 50 years of commitment to the arts, their students, and the community by attending this season’s line-up of productions! Polk State College Theatre WINTER HAVEN MAIN STAGE THEATRE 999 Avenue H NE, Winter Haven – Fine Arts Building (863) 297-1000
I spoke with Norman Small about his thoughts on Polk State celebrating 50 years of theatre. He reflected on the last 50 years and expressed the exciting thing about where Polk State came from and where it’s going in terms of theatre is that they now offer more production, accept more theatre majors, and have the state of the art theatre to perform in.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Isn’t it fun to get a little scared sometimes? Just in time for Halloween, Lakeland Community Theatre is bringing the awardwinning 1979 musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, based on the 1973 play of the same name, to Polk County!
With a show that requires both musical and technical elements, Reynolds saw about 60 auditions and was able to narrow that down to a cast of 27. Chris Kizirian will be playing the vengeful Sweeney Todd and Laura Modrall will be playing another central character, Mrs. Lovett.
Alan Reynolds, who has been with the theatre since he was only 16, and has been the artistic/ managing director for the last 8 years, attributes the reason for choosing this musical in part to being around Halloween and because they are the first community theatre in Central Florida to perform it.
“If the songs don’t sound right, you really don’t have a show.” He said, discussing the casting based largely on voices. “It’s great when you get people like Chris and Laura who are fine actors that can sing really well– then you have the whole package.”
The production is based on a Victorian pop-fiction known as a “penny dreadful,” and centers around a man, Sweeney Todd, who returns from exile to exact revenge on the not only the judge that wronged him, but on the entirety of humanity in a macabre yet humorous fashion. Reynolds discussed the sort of funny severity of the production commenting, “It’s not a feel-good piece, but it’s kind of a reality check piece because there’s a bit of Sweeney in every one of us.” He continued, “It’s all about vengeance and revenge and if we get hurt or have something bad done to us, it’s the human condition that we want to seek vengeance.” According to Reynolds, this production brings a little something for everyone to the table with their older audience members reliving the classic from the 1970’s and the newer generation identifying with Johnny Depp’s character in the 2007 thriller directed by Tim Burton.
Opening night is Friday, October 20th, with performances on the 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. The Friday and Saturday shows have a curtain time of 7:30 with a 2 pm matinee on both Sundays. To purchase tickets or for more information, you can visit Lakeland Community Theatre’s website: www. lakelandcommunitytheatre.com Lakeland Community Theatre 121 S. Lake Ave. Lakeland FL 33801 (863) 603-PLAY (7529) boxofficelct@gmail.com
The music and performers aren’t the only important components of the show says Reynolds. He, a set designer by trade, started designing the set in August for this theatrical experience. Reynolds says he has also done consulting and design work for Halloween Horror Nights and linked the similarities in the two being that people just love to be scared. The set design will also contribute to Reynold’s creative vision for the program, relating that it will be done in a Man of La Mancha style, saying, “It’s just a matter of making sure everything fits in the space. My concept is kind of like an asylum where the inmates of the asylum are doing the show. It’s almost like you are seeing a show within a show.” Reynolds relayed the draw for audiences to come see this spooky spectacle, commenting on the juxtaposition of emotions it lends itself to, saying, “It’s going to be really powerful and hopefully a little scary, a little funny. I think that a lot of people play it for the sort of macabre, scary stuff, but I think what’s so great about the piece is that it has a lot of humor in it.”

Posto 9 Posto 9 has only been open 9 months, but this Brazilian gastropub has already had thousands of guests come through. “We didn’t know if people would accept us, but they have,” owner Marco Franca said. “We are trying to raise the bar and we realized Polk County is the perfect place to do that.” I sat down with owners, Grace and Marco Franca and Chef Michel Revy to hear their story. “We came to Lakeland because my mother lived here,” Marco explained.
decided to create a “Southern version of Brazilian dishes.” They tested recipes on about a thousand people. They realized that pure Brazilian food was not going to work for this area. That’s when they started to change the recipes and as Chef Michel described it, they stumbled on a new cuisine. “We are the only ones doing that in the world today,” said Marco. My husband and I decided to try it on a Friday night. We started dinner with a “shareable” and cocktails. It was a busy night, but the service was fast. We ordered the Charred Octopus, and between the 2 of us, couldn’t finish it. It was absolutely delicious with hearts of palm, heirloom tomatoes, capers and basil. It’s one of the dishes that’s very close to being a true Brazilian recipe. The cocktails were great, I would recommend the The Classic Caipirinha with Leblon cachaça, lime and sugar. Marco says they make the best one in the United States.
Grace continued, “We moved to Lakeland four years ago. We realized when we wanted to eat, we had to travel. What I miss most about Brazil, is the food. So, we did research and realized there was a need for an independant restaurant where people could get good fresh food. We found this place, and Lakeland is a lovely city.” From that point on, they started looking seriously for a chef and that’s when they found the perfect match. “It was fate,” said Marco. “We push ourselves to be the best and serve as fresh as possible ingredients,” said Chef Michel. At age 32, Chef Michel Revy moved back to the United States from Brazil. He started working in Tampa. First as sous chef at Timpano followed by Aqua where he was the Executive Chef. After that, he found himself as the sous chef at the Publix cooking school in Lakeland. That’s where Grace and Marco Franca found him. They liked him because he has worked in both Brazil and the US and is able to bridge that gap to create Brazilian food that both Americans and Brazilians love. He was hired 8 months before the restaurant opened, where he found himself doing 8 months of research to develop a new fusion of Brazilian and southern cooking from the United States. “There are a lot of similarities between the 2 cultures. Equal climates will grow the same food.” Chef Michel realized how many similarities there are, and
havenmagazines.com
The most popular dish is the Chicken and Waffles. A perfect blend of Brazil and the South. The waffles are made of Brazilian cheese bread, something that’s eaten all over Brazil as snacks. When Chef Michel realized he could make waffles out of it, he thought what was the most famous waffle dish in America? That’s how the dish was born. He added even more Brazilian flavors with Bahia spiced fried chicken, a poblano aioli and guava ketchup. I actually ordered this on one of my visits, and I have to say, it was absolutely delicious. It was a little spicy, a little sweet and the cheese waffles were very cheesy. The portion was large, it was enough for lunch the next day. When the seasons change, so does the menu. The new fall menu was introduced at the end of September. They will also be having a smaller “core” menu of the dishes everyone 38
loves along with specials that will change as they sell out every few days. Chef Michel plans on 6 specials everyday. He’s excited about getting creative with whatever fresh ingredients he finds that day. Because of their limited quantities, you can expect high quality cuts of meat or fish. As for the name? Marco asked what is Brazil to most Americans? Rio de Janeiro and the beautiful beaches. Even though Marco and Michel are from Sao Paulo and Grace is from Manhattan, they chose a name with a reference to Rio. Marco explained, “The city has beaches along the entire coast and they are separated by lifeguard stations called postos. Posto 9 is the station at the edge of Ipanema Beach which is one of the more famous beaches in the world.” As for their future? The rooftop will be opening again soon, but this time as a Brazilian steakhouse and wine bar. It will be small, intimate and beautiful like you would expect from Posto 9. They plan to have specific fish and meats on the menu, all grilled because that’s what they do best. They will offer select wines to have with dinner. “It will be a seasonal restaurant, open fall through the spring,” Marco explained. There is no name or opening date yet. However Marco ended with this, “You will be able to have an excellent steak and wine under the stars.” In response to the Ledger’s article about the restaurant, Marco says, “We are open for business and we sought protection of Chapter 11 to reorganize our debts.” As for me, I will definitely be in for a steak and wine under the stars. Silver Surf Gulf Beach Resort Situated on Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island, this quaint little resort is just under 2 hours away. If you’re looking for a quick getaway or even a long weekend retreat, Silver Surf is a great idea.
Longboat Key are a short drive away. Visit a museum or just go for a drive. Whatever you feel like doing that day, you can probably make it happen. Or just stay at the beach and relax.
The resort is pretty old-school. At check-in, you’re given an actual key on a seahorse keychain to your room. Along with 2 chocolate chip cookies and a map of the island, you’re ready to start your adventure. The resort is small, only 50 rooms, so it’s very easy to find your way around. We ended up on the third floor and could see and hear the gulf waters just outside our door. The interior of the rooms are pretty simple, there’s nothing fancy about it. However they make up for that in cleanliness, the room was spotless. It comes complete with everything you might need including a kitchenette, dining table, couch, full bathroom and a comfortable bed. It’s perfect after a day on the beach and dinner in town. They offer a continental “grab and go” breakfast each morning, free for resort guests.
Rates start around $150 for this time of year. The same rooms can go for over $200 during peak season. There is no better time to have a getaway. And it’s only a short drive away.
Silver Surf guests get special access to the private white sand beach just across the street. From there, you can request a massage in the tiki huts on the sand for an additional charge. No need to drag chairs, you’re welcome to use the chairs and towels provided by the resort. Spend your day relaxing in the sunshine to the soothing sounds of the gulf. Or if you like a more active day, you can rent a jetski or other water sports equipment and play in the private waters of Silver Surf. Bring your own fishing rod and fish off the Bridge Street pier or charter a fishing trip. The resort also has a pool if you don’t feel like getting sand between your toes that day. A free island trolley passes right in front of the resort. The trolley picks up people approximately every 20 minutes and can take you to another part of the island. You can head on down to Bridge Street and have a casual dinner or a romantic night out. Families, young and old, large and small can find something that works for them. Play putt-putt with the kids or go shopping with friends. Grab a cocktail or watch for dolphins. You can even rent bikes, take a segway tour or rent a scooter to get around the island. Just don’t forget the sunset, you can’t miss the beautiful sunset over the gulf.

If you’re up for a little road trip, it’s only a short drive off the island. There are so many options like horseback riding on the beach, the Mote Marine Aquarium, shopping at St. Armands Circle or you can take a day trip to Busch Gardens. Sarasota and 58

Real Men Wear Pink The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, one of the biggest events in the name of breast cancer in Polk County, is right around the corner. Breast cancer survivors, those currently going through treatment, and supporters alike will come together at the Frances Langford Promenade on Lake Mirror in Lakeland on October 14th to raise awareness, donations, and collectively walk a 5k for the cause. With women being the primary group affected by breast cancer, it’s understandable that the conversation around the disease focuses mainly around them. But, what about the men? The men whose mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters have been touched by breast cancer? What about the men who themselves have or have survived it? This is a concept not lost on the American Cancer Society. They have created a program to give men a greater presence in the fight against breast cancer called Real Men Wear Pink. I spoke with the Communications Director of the southwest region for the ACS, Jennifer Howe, who shed light on the start of the program, “This is a program we created a couple of years ago to try to reach the men in our communities and in our lives. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events are so powerful and were reaching so many women in so many communities, but we kept hearing from men that they wanted to find out how to be involved in it.” The pilot program began in Jackson, TN in 2013 and made its way nationally and to our community for the first time in 2016. Last year, the
havenmagazines.com
national initiative raised $2.5 million. For the Real Men Wear Pink campaign, community members can nominate candidates to be in the program. The men then wear pink throughout the month of October to raise awareness and work to raise funds to go towards early detection, prevention, research, and patient support according to Howe. The patient support services that the American Cancer Society provides mean so much to so many that are going on the journey of treatment and recovery. The burden that cancer puts on the lives of those affected can be the difference between going to work to put food on the table or driving two hours for treatment. Some of these programs include Road to Recovery, where volunteers drive patients to and from treatment, Reach to Recovery which pairs cancer survivors with those going through treatment to offer emotional support and comfort, and the Hope Lodge, where patients that are outside of a reasonable proximity to treatment, can stay for free. Jennifer, whose grandmother was a two-time breast cancer survivor, spoke on the importance of breast cancer awareness, fundraising, and the efforts of the American Cancer Society, remarking, “It’s not enough for us to just go out and ask for money, we want to show the community what we are doing with that money and the way that I can do that through my job is by telling those stories. The more stories we can tell, the more people we can reach.” The fundraising goal for RMWP this year in our area is $50,000 and Jennifer predicts that it will be
exceeded as the number of men involved went up from 12 last year to 17 at the time we spoke, and continues to rise. Jennifer said jovially that one of the reasons that the fundraising piece of RMWP is so successful is because the men get so competitive. Speaking with Tim Calhoon, a participant for this year’s campaign, he has set a personal goal for himself of $5,000. Tim works for Mead Johnson Nutrition and owns Frescos in downtown Lakeland with his wife, Tina. Tina, who is a thyroid cancer survivor, has been affected by breast cancer through her mother and ex-husband’s mother who are both survivors. Tim sees this as a scary possibility that Tina or her daughters could one day be diagnosed and is showing his support through his involvement in Real Men Wear Pink. Both of his parents and Tina’s father have passed away from cancer so he wants to help in the fight in any way he can. I asked Tim why he thought the program was so important to which he responded, “Awareness is the most important part. Money in some ways is secondary, although the money is important for treatment, diagnosis, and potential cures. More than anything else, it’s just an awareness in the community because I think there are a lot of people that are affected, but either are hesitant or not sure where to go.” I asked Tim how he planned to represent the cause and adhere to the title of the initiative and he answered, “I wear Pink all the time anyways.” He continued, “So for me, it’s just adding pink in more often than I normally 60
wear anyway.” Jennifer expressed the different ways the men wear pink and the growing contagious excitement as the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk approaches saying, “They all do it differently. In fact, some of them start out with a pink tie and then by the end of it you could spray paint them pink and they’d be ecstatic.” Donations and nominations for Real Men Wear Pink candidates can be done through their website, Real Men Wear Pink of Polk. Or contact Caitlin Simmons, Senior Manager, Community Director for the AMS in this area for more information at (863) 688-2326 or caitlin.simmons@ cancer.org Visit MakingStridesWalk.org/polkfl to learn how you can get involved with the 5k.
