Happy February & Happy Valentine’s Day! This month we’ve compiled a list of 50 things to do in and around Polk County whether you’re on a date or hanging with friends. From sunsets to spa days, we’ve got you covered. With that said, love is in the air! Or at least Sally Del Castillo is! Read about her trip to Jump Florida Skydive in Lake Wales and then go online to watch the video of her jump at havenmagazines.com. Are you brave enough to try? Maybe comedy is more your speed? We sit down with Swan City Improv, if you haven’t been out to a show yet, you should! Do yourself a favor and go! We visit The Poor Porker and talk about the inspiration for the recent remodel, tacos and of course the beignets. It’s one of our favorite places to hang out and grab a beer with friends. Our Top Ten lists will keep you busy this month, as well as our calendar. Visit online to see the full calendar (we’re always adding to it!) and sign in to add your events for all to see. Have a beautiful February! Let’s make it the best one yetAmy Sexson Editor nthies yewar! nthies yewar! nthies yewar!

LOCAL NEWS WORDS Barry Friedman/LkldNow.com

Downtown Expands South Lakeland: In Restaurants Starbucks and Moving; Brewing TooJays Closes Capacity What’s going up at Southgate? The guessing game started as soon as construction fences went up in the parking lot in front of the iconic arch. It turned out that Starbucks is moving there from its cramped spot a few blocks away at Beacon and Florida. No word yet on when it will open. Elsewhere in south Lakeland restaurant chains: The TooJays Deli at Oakbridge Square has closed.

Shooting Incident Focuses Attention On Lakeland Police A fatal shooting by police officers has focused attention on the Lakeland Police Department’s handling of the Dec. 26 incident at the corner of Florida and Memorial. LPD’s chief says officers were following procedure when they shot at a teen who they say tried to hit an officer while driving a stolen car. Some departments, include St. Petersburg’s, prohibit shooting into a moving vehicle unless the occupants pose a threat with a gun, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Solar Group Shines Light On Pricing

City Commission Race: Lopsided Chief Giddens Spending, Leaves LPD Lopsided Vote For FSC Post Count

Downtown dining choices keep expanding. Six restaurants opened in Lakeland’s core last year, and another one is expected soon in a long-empty storefront next to Black & Brew. Downtown booster Julie Townsend wouldn’t name the prospective foodery, but said it brings a type of cuisine not currently available downtown. Also, downtown’s Swan Brewing is about to expand its beer-making capacity, courtesy of a grant from the Lakeland Community Redevelopment Agency.

Is Lakeland a solar innovator or behind the times? It depends on who you ask. The organizers of Polk’s solar cooperative say Lakeland Electric penalizes solar users by forcing them into a peak-use pricing structure. But the utility’s boss says solar users’ consumption when the sun isn’t shining costs everybody else and that other utilities will mimic Lakeland’s price structure as solar becomes more popular.

It wasn’t even close. Sara Roberts McCarley, a political newcomer backed by business leaders, scooped up nearly 75 percent of the vote and defeated two rivals in a special election for a threeyear seat on the Lakeland City Commission. McCarley, formerly executive director of Polk Vision, stressed financial conservatism in her campaign. She raised $43k in contributions compared with a combined $1.2k by her two opponents.

Larry Giddens has removed his badge after 34 years at the Lakeland Police Department and five years as chief. At 55, he says he’s ready to spend more time with family, so he accepted when he was offered a chance to take over as head of security for Florida Southern College. FSC hasn’t disclosed his salary; he was paid just over $169k per year at LPD.

RP Funding Center Completes $14.2 Million Renovation

Dreamers Envision A More Connected Downtown

Garden District Can Get Higher Buildings With Restrictions

New Signs Attempt To Clarify Downtown Parking Rules

The RP Funding Center, formerly the Lakeland Center, unveiled $14.2 million worth of renovations in January as it positions itself for more conference and convention business while increasing its appeal for sports teams and entertainers. Improvements include new LED video boards in the arena, seating in the auditorium, paint and carpeting throughout and improved locker rooms. Under construction: a 130-room Springhill Suites hotel next door.

Some dreamers in local business and government started imagining what downtown Lakeland could look like in the future. You can see their blueprint via an interactive online presentation, “Envisioning a Better Downtown,” at https://bit.ly/2DoO9qe. The series of sketches and designs trade surface parking for multi-use buildings and garages, show a potential soccer stadium near Jenkins Arena and envision a high-line style walkway connecting development north of Lake Mirror to the city’s core.

Plans for high-rise apartments northeast of Lake Morton energized neighbors to turn out to a City Commission meeting about building heights in the Garden District, an area north of Walnut Street and east of downtown. A major concern: Would new buildings look like they fit the neighborhood? Commissioners decided to place downtown guidelines on buildings higher than 40 feet in the district and return historic preservation review. Heights are raised from 40 to 60 feet, except south of Lime Street.

If you want to start a Facebook debate, mention parking rules in downtown Lakeland. Everybody has an opinion. The latest rounds involved revamped parking signs downtown. Among other things, the new signs attempt to clarify that your free on-street parking session lasts two hours starting from the first time you park and doesn’t carry over if you re-park. In addition, enforcement now starts at 9 a.m. weekdays instead of 8 a.m.

WORDS & PHOTOGRAPH Tara Crutchfield Happy Valentine’s Day, Polk County! Amidst the wining and dining, roses and cards, and those gross little candy hearts wouldn’t you like to give the gift of an experience this month to your significant other, new fling, or as a treat to yourself? In honor of this lovely holiday, we’ve compiled a list of 50 date ideas in Polk County. From the City of Swans to The Chain of Lakes there’s plenty to do whether you’re outdoorsy, creative, a sports fanatic, artsy, or anything in between. Some are perfect for making an impression on a first date and others are ideal for the couple who have been married for forty years – try one or try them all. Now go have fun, you crazy kids!

1. go skydiving Is there anything more romantic than jumping out of an airplane thousands of feet in the sky? Florida Skydiving Center in Lake Wales offers jumps for newbies and experienced jumpers. Adrenaline junkies can make their first tandem jump from 11,000 feet all the way up to 18,000 feet. Florida Skydiving Center even has a team of videographers so that you love birds can commemorate the occasion.

2. shop a local record store The kind of music a person likes can tell you a lot about them. Browse the aisles of a record store like Jesse Carl Vinyl or The Wax & The Needle in Lakeland, or Carlton Music or the selection at Central Avenue Antiques in Winter Haven. You may find some common favorites or introduce each other to new jams!

3. fall in puppy love Have a love for animals? Florida SPCA in Lakeland offers a weekly rent-a-dog program where you can sign up to take an adoptable pup on a doggy date. Who doesn’t love hanging out with dogs? (Psychopaths, that’s who.) You may fall in love with a new four-legged friend or you might just find them a new home while you’re out and about. Pro Tip: On your dog date, you can go to Benson’s Canine Cookies for a free dog treat!

4. go to a u-pick farm

8. take sally del

Come together to hand pick tasty, fresh fruits and veggies at one of the too many to name u-pick farms in the county. Pick blueberries at C&W Farms of Central Florida or Crown Jewel Farms to try your hand at making homemade blueberry wine or whip up a farm-to-table cobbler together.

In our May 2018 issue, Sally chronicled her tour of some of the county’s best taco trucks. By following her tour, you’ll find some new favorite lunch spots and get a few taco pro tips along the way. After a little Googling or if you ask Sally nicely @winnerhaven on Instagram, maybe you’ll find out the real name of “The Golden Plaza” mentioned in the story. If you can’t bond with someone over tacos, maybe that person is nacho soulmate and you should taco ‘bout seeing other people.

5. moonlight market at grove roots

castillo’s taco tour

Beer, local vendors, and food trucks, need I say more? An eclectic mix of local makers fills Grove Roots on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 6 - 9 pm to display their wares. There are plenty of unique finds from colorfully worded embroidery courtesy of Pin & Needle, vegan treats from Victor & Mika’s Bakery, rustic-industrial functional art pieces from Crows Nest Artisanal Wares, Illustrations by Bump Galletta, to fun dog collars, clothing, jams and jellies, catnip toy sushi, and more. Enjoy the brewery’s selection of tasty craft beers and grab dinner at that night’s food truck.

9. take a class at art centric studio

6. catch a show at polk theatre

Take in the fresh Florida air during a walk through Circle B. You’re sure to spot a variety of plant and animal species and might catch a glimpse of a gator or two at Lake Hancock (maybe even a gigantic one, like the one that made the news).

Surely that iconic flashing sign on Florida Avenue has caught your eye once or twice. Take a step back into old-Hollywood at this Lakeland landmark. One of the few remaining movie palaces left in the country, the theatre holds a live season of concerts and performances and movie buffs can catch classic and independent films there too.

7. have a “staycation” at the terrace hotel Considered to be Lakeland’s first “grand” hotel, the historic 10-story Terrace Hotel is just the place for a romantic weekend retreat. Built in 1924, this glamorous hotel overlooking Lake Mirror has hosted famous guests including Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Ford, and Frank Sinatra. After a dinner for two at The Terrace Grill, take a stroll around the lake or explore downtown Lakeland.

19

Tap into your creativity at an Art Centric adult evening class. The studio offers classes in brush-painted canvas, mixed media on canvas, flow painting on canvas, watercolor painting, and string art. Check out their website to see different options and classes!

10. take a hike at circle b bar reserve

11. ride the trails at bone valley atv park Load up your his and hers ATV’s and take to the 15 trails twisting and winding through this sprawling 200 acre ATV park.

12. have a picnic at bok tower gardens There might not be a more idyllic place in the county or time of year to put down a blanket and enjoy a meal amongst the blooming flowers and foliage. Sign up for a Spring Bloom Walking Festival Tour while you’re there! - CONTINUE ON PAGE 20 -

13. park it for a movie at silver moon drive-in theatre Movies are great for date night, but movies at a drive-in are even better! Grab a coke and some popcorn at the snack bar before settling in for a flick at this Lakeland cinema staple. Set a gift budget for one another. Then, get creative and come up with a funny rule for the gift. For example, it must be yellow, or spin, or fit in the palm of your hand. Separate and take to the streets of downtown (because shopping local is the only way to go, of course), and meet up to see what hilarious or thoughtful gift your partner has come up with.

45. volunteer See what volunteer opportunities are available at any of the number of local nonprofits and charities. Have a good time while helping out someone in need. 49. catch a show at the derry down The Derry Down Project began in June 20, 2014, a Main Street Winter Haven, Inc. initiative to restore a teen club/ music venue opened for Gram Parsons December 20, 1964. The two-and-a-halfyear restoration project was a community labor of love. Gram Parsons was born in Winter Haven and is widely recognized for founding the country rock and alt-country genres. He is also known as the father of “Cosmic American Music” – a hybrid genre of country, rhythm and blues, soul, folk and rock. Jim Stafford, Elizabeth Cook, John McEuen, and the Band of Heathens have all played there recently. Buy tickets early, this small venue sells out quickly.

50. pamper yourself Treat yourself to a spa day! Get a facial to refresh your winter skin, melt away your troubles with a massage, and top it off with a mani-pedi. Take a friend or go it alone, you deserve it.

Next up to the stage… Some come to watch, and some to perform. For both, an open mic can be an escape, music therapy, comic relief – just a good time. I ordered Swan’s ‘The Bean,’ stopped by the food truck The Arepazo Grill for a Cachapona and settled in for a night of entertainment. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the weather was invitingly crisp for local talent to get on stage to show the crowd what they’ve got. I spoke with Swan Brewing’s Open Mic Night MC, Wiley Christopher Widner (@wcwidner on FB) about the event. “I have been hosting open mics since the early ‘80s,” he said. “I still turn up at the open mics around the area, sometimes to perform, sometimes just to listen. It can be pretty inspiring.” Wiley added, “Years ago I heard a phrase ‘Sometimes it’s magic and sometimes it’s tragic’ …but you can bet it’s always entertaining.” According to the MC, the open mics are a way for newcomers and experienced performers alike to, “hone their style and perfect their craft.” The event is advantageous for those newcomers to, “become more comfortable performing in front of a live audience,” he said. One of the more seasoned acts up that Tuesday night was a musician and former radio disk jockey, Scott Hooker. Hooker said he’s always had a love for music and has been in the business of entertaining in one form or another since he was 14 years old. When asked what he liked to perform, Hooker responded, “I like what sounds good to me – it could be rock, country, blues.” He loves county for its lyrics, older country especially. He even writes his own songs and will pull out an original at an open mic on occasion. His resurgence on the open mic scene about three years ago was spurred by a personal tragedy. After his wife of 20 years suddenly passed away, Hooker said, “I needed something to get out of my head.” For him, getting out of his head meant performing. He admitted, “The open mics were a God-send for me.” Hooker has been attending Swan Brewing’s Open Mic Night since shortly after they started it last year. He described the brewery as being very welcoming

to local talent. “I cannot express how valuable those [open mics] are to up and coming musicians, to seasoned musicians, to people who just love performing, love writing, love playing music,” he said. Wiley got up and serenaded the crowd for a bit before giving the stage to Scott, followed by several other musical acts, one of which were neighbors who had never played together before, though you wouldn’t have guessed that hearing them jam out. Throughout the sets I noticed Swan Brewing owner Dan Thumberg rocking on from the side, cheering on the talent. “Great music speaks to the soul and has always been an integral part of the Swan Brewing atmosphere,” said Thumberg. “We’ve all got songs that remind us of good times in our lives and when you hear someone playing it live in front of you, there’s really no better feeling in the world.” Each act is given at least a three-song/ 15-minute set. Many performers have gone one to be booked by Becky Abel to play gigs at the brewery. “We have had a singer plug in her phone and sing songs from Frozen. We have had a 5 piece bluegrass group play some gospel and a 5 piece rock band with harmony. On any given Tuesday night you’re likely to hear everything from Abba to Zeppelin,” said Wiley about the open mic’s diversity of talent. The night’s closing act was a stand-up comedy set performed by Nate Fleming, founder of Swan City Improv in Lakeland. Fleming’s first introduction to the standup stage was 19 years ago. He started simply by memorizing material from joke books that he enjoyed and performing it at shows he was a part of. The comedian went from being in Star Search at his school and performing for his church youth group, to now starring alongside a talented troupe of actors at Swan City Improv and doing hilarious stand-up at local open mics. I asked Fleming what his personal comedy career goals were. “I used to want to get really famous and have a TV show and movies and make a ton of money to have a mansion that I live in all alone because I never focused on making friends and say Rosebud as I die in my bed with only my maid at my bedside while I do,” he joked (I think). “Now I just want to be able to pay my bills by doing comedy,

24

have it take me all over the world to make as many people laugh as I possibly can and hopefully educate people while I do it.” He stressed the importance of a local stage open to new talent. “You can’t create performance art completely alone. You have to be able to get in front of people to see how your work affects them, hear what it makes them say and really feel how they are responding to what you make.” Fleming passed along some of the best advice he has ever received. It seems a bit counterintuitive at first glance – to just give up, that if you haven’t already done it, then don’t do it now. But, he explained, “If you heard that advice and you ignored it, then you are ready to give stand up a go because most shows will make you want to give up until you start getting good at stand-up.” And if you’re nervous to try it alone, Fleming offers his friendship, saying he could always use friends that will keep him in the habit of going to open mics. Find Nate on social media @TheNateFleming. Musician Scott Hooker also had some words of encouragement to new talent. Whether you know all the lyrics or just a few chords, everyone is there to support you. He expressed, “That’s what I love is the encouragement, because those people who are nervous, those people who are unsure of themselves – who knows, they might keep at it and keep at it and become the next Springsteen.” Find Scott on Facebook @Hooker Music. Anyone with a gift they’d like to share with the community is encouraged to give Swan Brewing’s Open Mic Night a go. Their sound system is able to accommodate just about any act – solo, duo, trio, or otherwise. Performers can also bring along a phone or iPod to hook up and sing to if they don’t play an instrument. Next up to the stage… you! Swan Brewing 115 W. Pine St, Lakeland https://www.swanbrewing.com FB @swanbrewingco IG @swanbrewing Open Mic Night Tuesdays 6 pm – 9 pm

The 48th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival Load up the family and make your way to the Shores of Lake Wailes for this season’s must-attend art event. An almost half-century’s old tradition, this year marks The 48th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival presented by Citizens Bank & Trust and hosted by Lake Wales Arts Council. Over 100 world-class artists have been selected to display their work at the festival and compete for more than $22,000. The event, drawing thousands every year, will commence with their annual ART-B-Que Kickoff Party on Friday, February 22nd. Admission for the kickoff party is $15 for adults and $10 for students. According to current Board President of the Lake Wales Arts Council and Chair of the Art Festival this year, Erica O’Neil, the theme for the Kickoff Party will be New Orleans, Mardi Gras-style as the event is the weekend proceeding Mardi Gras. Along with delicious barbeque and the excitement of the Arts Festival under way, the Jazz Phools will be coming from Tampa to provide entertainment for the evening. The Arts Festival running from Saturday, February 23rd through

Sunday February 24th, is free to attend and promises a gamut of talented artist displaying mediums including clay and porcelain, digital, drawing and pastels, fiber, fine crafts, glass, graphics and printmaking, jewelry, mixed media, painting (oil and acrylic), painting (watercolors), photography, sculpture, and wood.

highlight this year includes a special exhibit tent displaying works from the Arts Festival and Student Art Show judges. The Festival is partnering with The Family Literacy Academy of Lake Wales for the children’s tent which will include plenty of arts and activities for little ones. “It’s a great opportunity for parents to start exposing their children to various art forms and opening their eyes to that world of art because that is something that is important to start early,” said O’Neil.

Top artists will be competing for over $22,000 in prizes for categories including Best of Show, Judge’s Award for Exceptional Work, Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, and Award of Merit.

O’Neil discussed the event’s significance as an opportunity to expose the community to fine art, saying, “It has been such a staple to the community that it’s been woven into the tradition of Lake Wales.”

Festival-goers can enrich their own art collections by purchasing any of the work for sale ranging in medium and price to fit their taste and budget. There will be food available and live entertainment as you admire the exhibits and enjoy the festivities, including music from some of the local school ensembles performing on Sunday.

The LWAC Board President added that she disagrees with the notion that smaller communities such as Lake Wales, compared to that of Orlando or Tampa, don’t have as much exposure to the arts. “This festival is a fun way to provide the community with a higher level of art,” she said.

The LWAC has a Student Art Show running the month of February, the winners of which will have their art displayed.

Executive Director of the Arts Council, Andrew Allen is excited to be working for the first time on the Arts Festival.

All judges for the Arts Festival are, of course, artists themselves. A festival 27

Allen was introduced as the new Executive Director at last year’s Patron’s Breakfast for the festival. He described preparation for the event as “all hands on deck,” adding, “For us, it’s really exciting to provide our community with such a fine arts rewarding experience. It kind of coaligns with our mission here [at the Lake Wales Arts Council].” ART-B-Que Kickoff Party Friday, February 22nd Tickets: https://centralfloridatix.com/ events/artbque 48th Annual Lake Wales Arts Festival When: Saturday, February 23rd 10 am – 5 pm Sunday, February 24th 10 am – 4 pm Where: On the Shores of Lake Wailes 33 North Lake Shore Blvd., Lake Wales http://www.lakewalesartscouncil.org FB @LakeWalesArtsCouncil IG @lakewalesartscouncil #LWArtFest2019 Free Parking and Admission

Shoppe. Linda Vinesett, the owner of Petals, and her staff graciously put aside the flowers that don’t meet the quality level for their arrangements. Instead of these flowers being thrown away, their beauty gets to shine in a unique preserved way. These natural beauties may not make the grade for quality floral arrangements, but they have colorful essence that make a lasting mark in art. As an invited artist to Walt Disney World, I also am fortunate to use trimmings of plants grown in the Disney nursery and ones that have been placed all around the parks once they are no longer “magical” enough to be displayed. My biggest “pinchme moments” of access at Disney occur when I get to use plants that are harvested from the greenhouses at the Living with the Land attraction in EPCOT. It is exciting to walk behind the scenes with Les Frey, horticulturist and the Student Program Manager of Agricultural Sciences at Epcot, and choose from such a diverse palette of color and texture. Living with the Land is a zero-waste facility and I am honored to be even a tiny part of their mission. Q: Tell us about your pottery. What items do you make, how would you describe your aesthetic?

A Q & A with Artist Rachelle Eason Q: Tell us about yourself! When did you first get into art?

that you would normally use a blank book.

A: I have been an artist all my life. My passion for art began with art lessons at the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh in my early childhood. That passion for art was fueled by being a student at The Ellis School in Pittsburgh, PA. During middle school and high school, I had the privilege to learn and explore mono-printing techniques, batik, drawing, painting, silversmithing, and further my passion for clay. In college, I started selling my art in small shows and stepped that up a notch in graduate school by participating in juried art shows.

My plant-staining journey began in 2006 on our farm in North Carolina. I was given some freshly-sheared wool from my friend on a nearby farm. I attempted to dye the wool by boiling it with fruits and leaves from our persimmon trees, held in place by a piece of paper and a rock. Although the wool did not dye, the paper did. I began experimenting with all types of plants from around the farm. Shortly after, I opened a pottery studio and decided to put my plant-staining discovery aside to focus on my thriving new business. Several years later, my family and I moved to Florida and I finally gave myself the time I needed to fully explore the possibilities of ecostaining. I conducted countless hours of research alongside hands-on trial and error, and started to understand the science, as well as the required techniques, to develop the process into an art.

Q: Tell us about your plant stained paper. How did you discover it? A: I design each one-of-a-kind paper piece by creating lovely color and patterns using fresh leaves, flowers, seeds, and other natural elements. The papers and plant elements are pressed then boiled for several hours. After cooling, I peel the flowers and leaves off; the papers emerge from the process stained with the enchanting beauty of nature...each piece unique. The finished papers are used as art pieces, journals, photo albums, sketchbooks and more; for any reason

A: As an adult, most of my art has revolved around pottery. I have always loved the form and texture of ceramic pieces and the added functionality of unique vessels just blows me away. My pottery style for commissioned pieces has evolved into a sort of 3D scrapbooking in a way. Mugs are my favorite. With the emphasis on function for the base form, I love to sculpt added elements that are more than decoration and mean something to the user. Perhaps influenced most by my plantstaining, my pottery takes on a strong nature aesthetic. One of the new collections I am working on is heavily influenced by nature and organic forms. The other collection I am creating is all about color. As much as I love plant-staining, I am limited with the depth of resulting colors which are muted compared to the actual plants. In pottery, I can go crazy with glaze colors! I am, and always have been, obsessed with purple, so this new collection is a study in deep rich glaze colors with an emphasis on purples.

Q: Where do you get the flowers and plants for it? How do you choose which ones will be right for the piece?

Q: Where do you draw inspiration from?

A: Many of the flowers are provided by a small business with a long history in Lakeland: Petals, The Flower

A: Nature is my favorite setting and my journal is my sounding board, my 29

brainstorming companion. It is my voice from a different perspective. When I write, I change. I evolve. Never again will I be the same as I was when I wrote those words. By having those thoughts written down, I can look back and see what I was thinking and analyze the path I took between then and now. Since I began this journey of ecostaining, I have grown. My journal is my evidence of growth. I don’t write diaries. They are not word for word accounts of what I do. My journal writings are reflective and descriptive. I get inspired to write and when I return to read them, I get inspired in a different way. That inspiration keeps me focused on my goals. Q: How can we be involved? A: At the Polk Museum of Art I teach a variety. This spring I am teaching Journaling with Art and Words and Elements of Art where we will experiment with a variety of techniques as students learn about the seven foundation elements of art including line, color, shape, form, value, space, and texture. In both classes we will be exploring techniques with watercolor paints and pencils, pen and ink, and drawing. In conclusion: It takes bravery and a village to be an artist; to put your voice out their to be heard. It is more than a career. It is a way of life that starts at the core and exudes to encompass everyone around. That is why I am so passionate about our community buying local art and supporting artists. Artists are residents contributing their unique voice to the community and that enriches us all. rachelleeason.com FB @rachelleeasonartist IG @rachelle_eason_artist

Everyone Welcome An audacious idea and the will to keep going no matter the challenge is the bit of magic it took Robyn Wilson to start and grow Lakeland’s The Poor Porker into what it is today.

A PLACE FOR ALL Part of the openness of The Poor Porker’s design has always been there, in spirit anyway. Robyn has gone out of her way to make everyone feel welcome in her home away from home. “We provide a safe space for musicians, a safe space for the LGBTQ community, a safe space for everybody,” said the owner.

In 2011, Robyn and her former business partner sold everything they owned in Los Angeles and came to Lakeland with only their car to prove to themselves they could do anything if they would just start. The ‘anything’ they wanted to do was to give people an experience by way of the doughy, sweet goodness of beignets. The pair weren’t able to find a good beignet anywhere in L.A. and were therefore fairly certain that market remained untapped in Lakeland.

The establishment even has signs posted saying as much. “We Welcome Everyone,” it reads, “All races and ethnicities, all religions, all countries of origin, all gender identities, all sexual orientations, all abilities and disabilities, all spoken languages, all ages. We stand here with you. You are safe here.”

It took them only two weeks to get their little business up and running, spending that time building a beignet booth out of salvaged material.

Robyn stood resolute in her stance on inclusions, saying, “If I’m in a place that I don’t feel welcome or if I don’t feel that everyone can be welcome, then I’m not in the right place. I had to do my part as a business owner to make it very clear.”

“Basically, all we had was a little Coleman camp stove, a Dutch oven, a candy thermometer, and this really cute little café,” said Robyn.

THE THORNS

They set up shop at the local farmer’s market and a few years and batches of beignets later, they built the space that would be The Poor Porker’s home at 801 E. Main. Her partner eventually moved away, and the business has since belonged to badass lady boss, Robyn Wilson.

Of course, the tried and true communityfavorite beignets remain and are now accompanied by a taco truck, Las Espinas. She wanted something quick, cost-effective, and above all, thoughtful and tasty. It too was inspired by her L.A. roots. Robyn said, “In California, every taco is better than the next taco because there’s taco competition.”

HER CALIFORNIA DREAM COME TRUE September of last year marked another chapter for The Poor Porker. They closed to remodel, opening a month and a half later with new life breathed into the space, and the direction of her business.

Las Espinas has all the expected street taco fare – chicken, steak, pork. On Sunday’s they create interesting brunch items that change weekly. The menu is posted on social media. Though Robyn isn’t a vegan herself, she makes a killer vegan queso.

Her vision for the renovation was heavily inspired by her former home on the west coast.

The name Las Espinas is Spanish for “The Thorns.” Not only is it a nod to the space itself which has a bit of a desert feel in some parts with its many cacti and California flare, but also, “I felt like it was just a perfect way to describe the way that I feel about myself sometimes,” she laughed.

She gave a nod to Los Angeles’s oldest street, Olvera Street and it’s culturally vibrant market, for both the remodel and her street tacos. And, after all is said and done, “It feels a little bit more California here now,” she smiled.

Along with the food trucks, the outdoor space is home to Robyn’s Olvera Street inspired café, a Sycamore tree that she planted, a jeep and old porcelain Bartow street signs salvaged from a junkyard, various nook-and-cranny seating areas, and their signature teepee.

The reopen saw the addition of 20 people to her staff, a beautiful outdoor café, a taco truck, and some new art projects to adorn the indoor space. Towards the top of The Poor Porker owner’s checklist was to make the space more inviting. A bit closed off before, she said, “It felt like some sort of top-secret club that nobody was invited to, and that wasn’t the idea that I wanted.”

The inside space houses Bar Calexico. Robyn’s mom, who often works the beignet truck, was born in a small town on the border of California and Mexico aptly named, Calexico, hence the bar’s moniker. 30

Bar Calexico is Robyn’s homage to her parents who she said she owes everything to. A photo of the couple is displayed above the bar. The lounge space inside is airy – an eclectic mix of retro and cool. On one of the walls is an opportune selfie spot, a large art piece made entirely of dyed mop heads created by talented tapestry artist and owner of Penny Made, Sara Kent. THE HANDS THAT BUILT IT The Poor Porker has become known for their tasty street tacos, binge-worthy beignets, beer and wine selection, and live entertainment. Giving a platform to local musicians is important to Robyn. She feels that the exchange is mutual – The Poor Porker gives them a platform to display their talents, and they contribute to what makes it such a local gem. “I can say that there are so many different hands and so many different wonderful humans who have come through here and contributed great things.” It is true that so many actual hands have helped Robyn build The Poor Porker. Their small garden was planted by students at the Montessori School who would come weekly to tend to it. The graphics on her taco truck were done by her friend, gifted graphic artist, and Associate Professor of Art at Florida Southern College, Sam Romero. “I really like to challenge myself to work with people who I continue to be inspired by,” she said. The entrepreneur noted that The Poor Porker and all small businesses wouldn’t be anything without the community that supports them, “But also, we wouldn’t be anything without the artistic thoughtful hands that have helped build it – the musicians that play, the cooks that cook the food, the people in the beignet booth that roll my dough out and do it precisely and with quality and care.” Robyn Wilson started with nothing but an idea and, along with the hands that have helped her along the way, has built a thriving business and community around it. “If you make the things that you wish existed, and if you’re willing to keep going and push through the difficulty, and the victory, and the difficulty, and the victory – then you’ll achieve amazing things that hopefully will inspire people to do the same and make a really cool community.” The Poor Porker 801 E Main St, Lakeland, FL (863) 937-6915 http://www.thepoorporker.com FB @thepoorporker IG @thepoorporker

Swan City Improv Figure it out on the way down Whether you get your chuckles from stand-up, rom coms, or laugh at your own jokes, there is nothing as satisfying as a good, hearty, embarrassing, snort-inducing bellylaugh. On the first Friday night of every month for almost two years now, an eclectic cast of players takes the stage at LKLD Live to give Lakeland a double bill of the absolute best medicine. Though the thought of having to make a crowd of strangers laugh with no prepared material may send waves of panic through your body, there is an art to it – a way to take the stage with confidence, to win over a room with an eruption of laughter, to feel free enough to be silly – and no, it’s not picturing the audience in the buff. Members of Swan City Improv opened up about how they made their way to the improv stage and how they now rely on their team to help them let it all go.

A BRILLIANT BATCH OF HUMORISTS Swan City Improv was founded by funnyman Nate Fleming. Nate, from Richmond, Virginia, learned improv almost 14 years ago. He made his way to Lakeland to attend Southeastern University where he played in their group, Unpland Improv. After years of trying to set up an improv team in Lakeland to no avail, he moved to Chicago, studying at all the major comedy clubs – The Second City, ImprovOlympic, The Annoyance. He made a call to LKLD Live while still in Chicago. LKLD Live Executive Director, Shane Lawlor liked the idea of giving the new improv team a platform and after the first show asked them perform every month. “Truly, we owe a lot to LKLD Live for opening up their doors to us,” Nate said. Swan City Improv now has a team of nine players including Nate, Meg Wittman, Jeremy King, Brent Adriano, Cameron Smith, Aaron Burns, Arielle Prepetit, Sean McKenney, and Kegan James. Shows are hosted by Jordan Rippy with musical accompaniment by pianist Anthony Riley. We sat down with Nate, Meg, Jeremy, Brent, Cameron, and Aaron to talk improv. Meg and Jeremy are both from Orlando. Meg has been doing improv for two years now, often taking the SAK Comedy Lab stage in Orlando. She was connected with Swan City Improv and was a natural fit. She describes the group as “an ensemble cast,” adding, “it really feels like a

home and a family.” Jeremy, a church youth director, started improv in the same college improv group as Nate, hosting for two seasons. “It’s been a cool transition between hosting it and being a part of the team, it’s been amazing,” he said. “My first real exposure to improv was actually these guys,” said Lakeland native, Brent Adriano, pointing to Aaron, Nate, and Jeremy. “I saw them as a freshman in a café show at Southeastern University. They were on a team called Unpland Improv and I said, ‘I want to be a part of that someday.’” “Someday” came for Brent when Nate invited him to play with the Swan City Improv team. Both Aaron and Cameron were first exposed to improv watching Colin Mochrie, Brian Styles, and Wayne Brady make the country laugh on Whose Line is it Anyway? In college, they both played on Unpland Improv and were pulled back onstage when Nate started Swan City.

“I AM SERIOUS. AND DON’T CALL ME SHIRLEY.” Comedians past and present have given the Swan City players inspiration for their wacky antics and ability to let it all hang out on stage. For Jeremy, it started with All That and Kenan & Kel. He said that seeing someone who looked like him on TV as a kid, playing a gamut of crazy characters, pushes him to attempt characters unlike himself. “I really pull that from Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell,” he explained. Nate’s favorite comedians are those who “are goofy, but they don’t believe they’re goofy.” He named Leslie Nielsen, quoting one of his favorite lines in Airplane!, “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.” He noted his interest in the variety of characters and “lightning-paced” comedy of Steve Martin and Robin Williams. Nate discussed the honesty of comedians George Carlin and Richard Pryor. “They just speak to what they believe to be true and they commit to it whether or not you care. They just want to make you laugh by telling the truth that they’re able to find.” Brent watches the ingenuity of his team, taking in everything they do to sharpen his own improvisational skills. Keegan-Michael Key and Jim Carrey inspire Brent to be very physical with his comedy on stage.

SNL alum Tim Robinson has been a comedic influence for Aaron Burns. “Everything that he does, they push past the normal point of ‘this is uncomfortable’ and then it finds this weird bizarro zone where everything is hilarious,” he said with a smile. Cameron, without hesitation, pointed straight to Burns, saying, “Probably this guy. Aaron has a really high comedic IQ.” Meg finds motivation in, “Kristen Wiig from SNL, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey – just people who kind of don’t care about the way they come across.” As a person, and especially as a woman, it’s all too easy to get caught in the trappings of looking, acting, and being perceived by others in a certain way. But with improv, Meg said, “You kind of have to let that go.” “Playing ugly, dirty, weird characters is just really, really fun. Those three ladies are super strong, and they’re not worried about the way they look. They’re just trying to get the story across,” she said.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO BREAK A LITTLE GLASS With visions of sweaty palms and shaky knees in my head as I pictured myself on a stage, I wondered how this improv troupe is able to get on stage and just have fun. And then a terrifying question arose – what happens if a player freezes up on stage? “It’s about trusting yourself and trusting your players,” said Meg. She feels that she is able to play her most honest self with the Swan City Improv group specifically because of how comfortable she is with everyone. In improv, teamwork is everything. Knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses can help to work through a tough scene or push each other to do things they might not normally go for. She quoted actor, writer, teacher, and improv legend Del Close, “Fall, and then figure it out on the way down.” Jeremy agreed, saying, “You just feel safe with your team. When you know your team really well, you can tell when you blank out or if something’s missing and they’ll naturally jump in and save you or continue propelling the scene forward.” - CONTINUE ON PAGE 36 -

35

Those ‘oh no,’ spaz out, brain freeze on-stage moments are often when the best scenes happen. It is their humanity that the audience wants to see said Meg. Those little hiccups and weird moments can drive the show. She posited, “It’s almost like a gift you’re accidentally giving yourself. It’s giving yourself the ability to say something weird and having your players be like, ‘that’s cool, let’s go with that,’ and supporting you.”

players made us laugh and by the end of the night, Jeremy King was crowned Top Swan with Meg Wittman in close second. I laughed until my cheeks hurt. I even snorted a little, but don’t tell anyone. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone do “Away in a Manger” in the style of Norwegian Death Metal or when Aaron’s character’s accent was tapering, “somewhere between France and Russia apparently.”

The team uses failure as a building block for many of their scenes. “Failure is a huge thing that we’re all about. You want to fail,” said Nate.

I’ve already have plans to see the next show.

Aaron Burns had the perfect anecdote for this. His father-in-law, who is a glassblower, told him a common phrase in the glassblowing community, “If you’re not breaking them, you’re not making them.” In other words, falling flat on your face on stage (figuratively or literally) is all part of the process. And, to quote Meg quoting Amy Poehler, “No one looks stupid when they’re having fun.”

THE FUTURE OF COMEDY IN LAKELAND Can anyone do improv? Yes, you do it every day. As Nate articulated, “You don’t sit down and write out your script for the day. Every conversation that you get into, every interaction, you’re doing improv.”

GETTING DOWN TO FUNNY BUSINESS

If you’re interested in learning the art of improv, sign up for Swan City Improv’s classes starting this month. The group thinks hosting classes will help them supplement their roster and introduce some new faces from the community onto the LKLD Live stage.

Swan City Improv puts on two shows on the first Friday of the month. The 7:30 pm performance, Top Swan, is a competition style in which all the players compete for points earned based on applause. It is made up of a series of fun short form games based on audience suggestion.

Beyond classes, the team would like to do more corporate events where they can use improv to promote team building and communication skills. They also hope to travel to different festivals in the future and expand to more than one night of shows a month.

At 9 pm, the troupe goes on again for Swan City Cinema. During this performance, players create three different movies. From there, the audience gets to pick which movie they want to see all three acts of.

Above all, the Swan City Improv founder says he’d love for Lakeland to become a strong, beautiful, diverse comedy scene. “A bigger more vibrant comedy scene where the improv feeds into the stand-up, the stand-up feeds into the sketch, and people have an opportunity to come out at night, laugh, and see people create some really fun art,” that, is what Nate Fleming hopes to see for the future of comedy in Lakeland.

Not even the rain could stop improv fans from showing up to LKLD Live that Friday for a night of kicks-andgiggles. I got a glass of cabernet and settled in, watching as people young and old packed the house. I was a little surprised at just how diverse the audience was. There were families with kids, a few friends out for some fun, older couples, teenagers – everyone – and the scene was definitely “everyone-friendly” as the troupe put it. The humor wasn’t dumbed down, just cleaned up. Or, as Nate said with a wry grin, “I don’t want to toot our own horn, but we’re kind of like the Pixar of Improv.”

L VE IS IN THE AIR… Or in my case... on the ground waiting for you. I would have never guessed when I woke up this morning that I would: A) Be going on a date. B) With anyone besides my husband. C) That it would possibly be 14,000 feet in the sky. The phone call from the Canadian went like this, “Hey Nando, it’s Jordy. Frenchie and I thought we would kidnap Sally to come watch him skydive in Lake Wales and then go do a little thrifting. As it turns out... you should probably get over here to Florida Skydiving Center. Sebastien has talked your wife into jumping with him!” Now, Nando is used to these two characters getting me into situations but this was a little much for him. He, like other skeptics said, “Jordy, why would Sally ever want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? She’s got more sense than that.” While the Frenchman danced around getting ready to put on his harness and ascend for the eighth solo jump of his life, the wind picked up. Betty, who runs the place and has owned skydiving centers since the 1970’s said, “Sebastien, no matter how qualified you think you are, with these winds, you can’t jump today. Make an appointment and come back tomorrow.” I was wearing cowboy boots anyway, which isn’t the preferred shoe for skydiving. We were off the hook, but I was intrigued by something I had never even thought about or considered. When we got home I said, “Nando, do you want to do a tandem jump with me tomorrow?” “No way!” He said, and the look on his face made us laugh. “Are you sure Nando?” I said. “100 percent! I think you all are crazy. I really don’t want you to do it either Sally. Sebastien and Jordy, it’s one thing to take my wife thrifting and out to lunch, but you can’t just take her jumping out of airplanes. She is not joining your international flight crew.”

As hard as he tried to sweet talk Betty and after sitting there for 4 hours we realized once again there would be no skydiving without an appointment. Whether I jumped or not, I had decided I would write my article about skydiving. Betty instructed Sebastien, “Monday, you and your crew can go to our other facility in Plant City and meet Pip at 10 am. He will jump with you. Sally, you think about it and if you want to do it, come back next weekend. We will video you skydiving so you have a picture of you doing it for your article.” Plant City had a completely different vibe than the Olympic feel of Lake Wales. It was more like a cool campground. The Cessna 900 was being washed and serviced on the grass in front of the picnic tables. People were sitting around talking of the days jump. Parachutes were hanging from the ceiling, a big TV was there to watch your footage from the jump and it seemed to me this place was more Sebastien’s crowd. People come from all over the world and stay here just to skydive. They start in the morning and jump over and over again perfecting their free fall and canopy skills, gaining confidence and of course landing and folding the parachute properly. That is something that comes after everyone’s first jump, which most of the time is tandem with an instructor like Pip. He has over 20,000 jumps. I was pretty sure that on Saturday I was going jump. I couldn’t talk about it too much or I would get nervous and start telling myself I wasn’t. Look guys, I’m a Costume Designer. I dress actors and design T-shirts… I do Zumba and ride a pony horse. I am not a daredevil on any scale.

I thought, I just might…

Saturday morning, I called and made an appointment with Betty. At noon I was going to jump or cancel at the last minute. Either way… Nando, my love, was more nervous than I and all he was going to be doing was standing on the ground watching with Sebastien. They would possibly “go live” on Instagram if I could teach them how to use it on the way there.

The next morning, Jordy had an actual flight back to Canada so, Nando and I headed back to Lake Wales with Sebastien. (He refused to make an appointment.) He thought he’d just show up in his posh flight suit being French and they’d let him on the next flight.

I put on my cutest… what I considered to look like a skydiving outfit, waterproof mascara, grabbed my sparkly Yeti Cup and pushed myself to get in the car. I thought, oh man… if I’m this nervous just getting in the car to go there how am I going to get myself to climb on a

37

plane and then jump out of it? I’ll tell you how. I signed my waver, got secured into a harness and Pip had a Go Pro camera on his wrist. Pip began filming… got me all hyped up saying things like, let’s go skydiving Sally…held my hand and escorted me through a whiff of jet fuel to the plane. The pilot took off in a blink of an eye, and we were flying. I was sweatypalmed holding on to what I was calling in my head the “Oh sh**! bar” trying to suppress my mile a minute heart beat so I could enjoy the one-way flight. I would not be on the plane going back down. The plane kept climbing higher and I was thinking, Isn’t that high enough? I think we would be fine to jump from here. But no, we kept escalating. In the cabin, there was not much talking other than preoperational conversation between the other tandem couple and the 2 Sebastien types that were going to be jumping solo. Next thing I knew…. harnesses were getting hooked up. Altimeters were being double checked… straps were being snugly pulled. Pip put goggles on me like the jockeys wear for horse racing. He prepped me on a few last minute positions, filmed a second where you can visibly tell I am freaking out, but trying to look cute and act cool. Then the high fives started. Sebastien told me that everyone starts high fiving right before they jump. Lights turned green and first two headed out the side door. I felt like we were soldiers about to be dropped for a mission. Off they went and then the other tandem group jumped. Being the last ones, we slid down the leather bench to the “Exit.” My feet were dangling out of the plane which was moving at 120 mph. I kept saying in my head, if President George Bush did it at 90, I can do it. Then we fell out of the plane. It was kind of like diving into water, you go in and it takes a minute to actually adjust. Well, in my case, breathe because I was in shock and forgot to keep my head up like Sebastien and Pip had told me a hundred times. What was probably seconds of free falling and trying to believe what I was actually doing, felt like minutes then all of a sudden…a rush of clarity, peace and quiet. Pip, with his British accent had gone from yelling so I could hear him, to - CONTINUE ON PAGE 38 -

speaking normally. He said, “That’s it! What do you think Sally?” “Did the parachute open?” I asked? “Of course it did! Look up at the canopy.” I took a huge breath and remembered being told, when you’re relaxed you notice more.

her know that I had survived. She, who has only gone skydiving once in her life, wasn’t surprised but smiled and said, “Great, now you’ve done it!” My amateur “Instagram live filmers” managed to kill the feed during my 5 star landing, but they had a champagne picnic planned on the farm to celebrate. I crossed something off of my bucket list that hadn’t even been on it in the first place, but should have been.

I began looking for our Lake Wales cattle farm amongst the array of green orange groves and brown patchwork of earth below us. Our feet were just hanging there; Pip was singing Baa Baa Black Sheep as we drifted over a sheep farm. We talked about things like how Nando and I met and ended up in Polk County. Now I was a real “snowbird.” We were frozen in time just floating carefree visiting and viewing from above things that I had seen a million times but never like this. I was overcome with relief and awe as well as surprise when we landed perfectly on our bums like the feather in “Forrest Gump.”

It was a perfect dream day… filled with every emotion on the spectrum. I will say that like Betty, I don’t know if I need to do it again but… I think everyone should do it at least once. Or be like Cowboy Nando and have your wife do it so you can vicariously experience it and brag about her to all your friends. From Our International Flight Crew... X0 Sally (Pittsburgh) & Nando (Colombian/American/ Chicken) DC, Sebastien (French), Jordy (Canadian), Pip (British) and Betty (USA)

I guess I didn’t even realize he was filming. I was in such a dream and when we landed it was like I woke up. I hugged and kissed Pip as he gathered up the canopy and we proudly marched towards Nando and Sebastien. Me wearing a smile that probably blinded them as much as the sun.

Special Thanks to Jump Florida Skydiving, which in my video I call by 10 different names. I was so flustered, lol.

Nando hugged me. He was so happy to have me back. Sebastien high fived me and called me an “Unidentified Flying Sally” and then said, “Now you know. I told you that you would like it.”

P.S. I had thought of going into details and all the steps leading up to the jump but…. In the words of Sebastien, you’ll see.

I kind of just kept following Pip to drop off the parachute to be repacked. I felt like I was his wingman. I was in a way, loopy. Hmmm… a natural high? Or “On Cloud Nine?” Pip had said to me, “Whatever happens in the sky stays in the sky!” I loved that. He was a pleasure and made sure I was safe.

With more than 80 one-man exhibitions at major institutions like the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney, and the Guggenheim and a body of work that, despite its stylistic variety, is always recognizably his own, Barnet achieved wide acclaim during his lifetime. In this installation of 22 recently gifted and loaned works by Barnet from the permanent collection, we can begin to see why.Indeed, Barnet forged a unique path through 20th century art history. At once a dedicated realist and figurative artist when pure abstraction was the norm and an experimenter in abstraction when other artists renewed their interest in representation, Barnet defied expectations about how modern artists should produce art, refusing to bend to the whims of any contemporary trends.
