Hello!
Thank You For Voting Us Best Apartment Community!
February was a short month but a powerful one! A lot of changes have happened since our January issue came out. First and foremost, my husband Chris and I purchased the LKLD Haven and Haven Magazines from DR Media. That means we are no longer involved with the Winter Haven Sun and have moved offices. Well...we’re working out of our living room, but we hope to find an office space soon! It was a very bittersweet ending, I have to admit. We will miss our office mates everyday but are also excited (and terrified) for the future. There will be a few bumps these first few months, but hopefully you as the reader, won’t notice a thing. There are big plans for this year & we can’t wait to share it with all of you. In the meantime, Chris and I plan on being here for awhile and planting some deep roots, so please, introduce yourself and let’s get to know each other!
1 & 2 Bedroom Homes Available
On another note, this month we talk about Polk’s Sexiest Men! We weren’t sure how people would react, but surprisingly we received about 25 nominations of men from all walks of life. It turned out to be a very diverse list, read Tara’s story to see who we felt should be the winner. Thank you to everyone that sent in a nomination!

We visited Revival in Lakeland for some very unique cocktail recipes for St. Patrick’s Day. If you haven’t been out to Revival yet, please try it. It’s half cocktail bar and half library! We loved it.
WE’RE EASY TO GET TO - WORTH THE DRIVE!
Since we’re in between offices right now, I apologize for any missed calls or emails. Things have been hectic, to say the least. Please, just email me or message me through LKLD Haven Magazine Facebook page and I will get back with you! Fingers crossed I’m sitting in an office when I sit down to write my April Letter from the Editor! Also, tag your photos on social media with #lkldhaven and you might find yourself printed in the next issue!

Mr. Roboto Pedestrians Walk Threatens Jobs on the Wild Side In Our Growing in Lakeland, Warehousing Study Finds Segment
Lakeland Gets Another Homegrown Police Chief
He’s a Rebel: City Resumes Plans To Move Monument
A Brightline veep came to Lakeland to explain the private company’s plans to run express rail service along the I-4 median from Orlando to Tampa by 2021. Local elected officials are pushing to get a stop in Lakeland during the initial construction. The company said it plans to put a station in Lakeland eventually but all decisions will be market-driven.
Lakeland was singled out — and not in a good way — for pedestrian safety. We were ranked fifth most dangerous city in the U.S. for walkers (eight of the top 10 were in Florida) by Smart Growth America. The city of Lakeland responded by listing projects under way to increase safety, including initiatives on heavily walked Memorial Boulevard and U.S. 98 north.
The Wall Street Journal came to Lakeland to check out a Brookings Institution study that ranked us third among cities where automation is likely to reduce jobs. The reporter zeroed in on Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, where automation enabled the company to consolidate five warehouses into the largest liquor-distribution facility in the world. Initially the plant brought more jobs to Lakeland, but automation threatens their longevity.
For the second time in a row, the city of Lakeland promoted a long-serving cop who grew up here to police chief. Ruben Garcia, who helped pioneer community policing in Lakeland, became police chief Feb. 1, replacing Larry Giddens, who now heads security at Florida Southern College. Garcia, 54, has been involved with patrol, narcotics, SWAT, K9, 911 and school resource officers.
Work to move a Confederate monument from the center of Munn Park to Veterans Park was halted when some Southern heritage organizations challenged the move in court. Once a federal judge dismissed the case, the city resumed planning the transfer that’s expected to cost $150k for the actual move and about $50k for site prep and security.
Put Me In, Coach: Spring Training Brings Tigers Back
Story About Pledge Protest, Disruption Goes Viral
Response to Fatal Blaze Draws Heat to Polk Fire Rescue
Lakeland Will Escape All That Noise From Draken Jets
Herbicide Moratorium Will Affect Lakeland Lakes
It’s March, and in Lakeland that means taking a late, extended lunch break to enjoy a hot dog lunch and a Spring Training game at Joker Marchant Stadium. The Detroit Tigers returned to Lakeland for an 83rd year. It’s a rebuilding year for the home team, but the mild weather is perfect for checking out whether Miguel Cabrera has recovered from last season’s injuries.
A Lakeland story that went viral has something for everyone to get outraged about. Civil libertarians are upset that a substitute teacher at Lawton Middle Chiles Middle Academy didn’t know a student was within his rights to stay seated during the Pledge of Allegiance. Disciplinarians were perturbed that the student ignored repeated commands from administrators and the school resource officer. The student was charged with causing a disruption, but latest word is he won’t be prosecuted.
Polk County called in an International fire safety group to assess its Fire Rescue department’s response to a Rockridge Road log cabin blaze that claimed the life of a disabled, 76-year-old woman. Critics claim transcripts show firefighters on the scene did little to rescue her even as a 911 operator assured her that help was on the way.
As Draken International acquires Mirage F1M jets under its latest federal contract for military adversary flight training, supersonic flights will start taking off from Lakeland Linder Airport this spring. Fortunately for area residents, the flights won’t break the sound barrier until they’re well over the Gulf of Mexico.
The city of Lakeland will continue limited spraying of Roundup to control invasive plants in lakes even as a temporary moratorium halts the bulk of herbicide use in local lakes. Most of the spraying is done in conjunction with Florida Fish and Wildlife, which implemented a moratorium that’s expected to last into April as it takes public comment. City spraying will focus on plants preventing stormwater flows.

POLK’S SEXIEST
MAN A group sat together in a meeting discussing ideas for upcoming issues. We were about 30 minutes into the brainstorm, ideas were being volleyed, concepts mulled over to see what stuck. Then, someone, seemingly joking, blurted out, “How about Polk’s Sexiest Man?”
“What is sexy? Is it a smokin’ hot bod? Simply the way someone carries themselves? Their attitude? What do they do for others? Style, smarts, sophistication? Or perhaps it’s something intangible.” The submissions began rolling in from coworkers, wives, friends, nominating exceptional men in their lives and we found out exactly what sexy meant…to us anyways.
We got a little giddy at the prospect. What sexy men did we know? Who would be nominated? Would anyone even participate? Would they think it’s all a joke?
So, what is a sexy man?
Then we took our idea out of the conference room to share with the rest of the office. There were a few laughs, some excited applause, and…a worried look, followed by the notion that this could be objectifying to the men involved, and a serious question, “What if the tables were turned? What if we did Polk’s Sexiest Woman? How would you feel?”
Sexy is a loving husband. Sexy is a dedicated father or grandfather. Sexy is a man willing to help someone down on their luck. Sexy is someone creative. Sexy is someone passionate about their career. Sexy is a mentor to others. Sexy is a man who is kind. Sexy is a man supportive of a family member’s dream. Sexy is an animal lover. Sexy is a man willing to take risks. Sexy is a loyal friend. Sexy is a man with a sense of humor. Sexy is a nice guy. Sexy is someone with the willpower to set a goal and achieve it. Sexy is a man who treats everyone equally.
This led to a spirited discussion about what the term ‘sexy’ actually meant. Some stood firmly on the side of physical attributes, some on actions, or character traits.
After sifting through so many fantastic submissions of sexy men, here are our picks for Polk’s Sexiest Men. We appreciate you sexy fellas for all that you are to your friends, family, and community.
We came up with the following wording, urging people to submit their nominations for Polk’s Sexiest Man:

MELVIN THOMPSON Photo Tom Hagerty What do a giant toy collection, Steve Harvey, and Polk State College have in common? 2019’s Polk Sexiest Man, Melvin Thompson. Thompson is Polk State’s Director of Student Activities and Leadership Office (SALO). From Polk County, Thompson started out as an academic advisor for Polk State College (then Polk Community College) before becoming the student activities advisor. From there he became a coordinator and later program director. All this might not have happened had the director of the dorm he was in his freshman year of college at Florida State University not given him the opportunity to shine where he does best – amongst the students. One day Thompson was walking from class when Darwin Sewell drove up beside him and asked him to lunch. The two met and Darwin told Thompson he saw something in the way he interacted with students and subsequently asked him to become a Resident Assistant. Thompson tried it for the summer and loved it. He’s since made student life the focus of his career. His current role with SALO, the brainchild of Thompson, entails responsibilities for student government, clubs and organizations on campus, tours, leadership development, student center operations, and the student services database. Melvin Thompson was nominated by colleague Madison Fantozzi, on behalf of Polk State College. In her submission, Fantozzi wrote, “While Thompson exudes a natural swagger (seen on his blind date episode of The Steve Harvey Show discussed on POLKcast) his true attractiveness comes from his dedication to Polk State’s students and his innovative ideas that keep students engaged on their paths to college degrees.” We’ll get to The Steve Harvey Show momentarily, but for now, let’s focus on that dedication to students Fantozzi described. Excited about the role he plays in the students’ future, Thompson said he gets the chance to see students grow from freshmen to seniors, learning to manage their budget, work with others, communicate, and team build. He joked that the best part of his job is being a forever college student, but noted, “To see them grow from 18, 19, 20-year olds to presidents and vice presidents of clubs, and then graduating, taking what they learned in student activities into the workforce – that’s great.” He credits his former dorm director Darwin Sewell for lighting the spark, but also says he’s found mentorship in Reggie Webb, current Vice President for Student Services. “He showed me how to take what I learned in college to a more professional level,” said Thompson. He taught the SALO director to use his experiences and mistakes to make the lives of students better – and that is just what Thompson has set out to do. One of the things that make students feel more at ease when having a chat in Thompson’s office is his massive toy collection, though this isn’t the reason he collects them.
condition, still in the box collection that Melvin has. His collection is compiled of toys he has loved and played with from the ’80s and ‘90s – think eating cereal on the living room floor watching cartoons kind of toys. His favorite show to collect from is Transformers. The “first real piece of nostalgia” Thompson ever got his hands on was when he as about 10 or 11. A still scene from Mickey and the Beanstalk in The Disney Store at Lakeland Square Mall caught his attention. His parents told him if he saved up, he could get it. “I mowed yards, washed cars – I was terrible at it – I cleaned my grandma’s house, my aunt’s house. I finally had the money and I went and bought it,” he explained. The piece still sits fresh in his memory and on a shelf in his office amidst his other action figures. His collection is so large it spans his office, home, and a filled up R2D2 toy chest. Proof that he’s always up for a new experience, Thompson appeared on an episode of The Steve Harvey Show which he discussed on a great episode of POLKcast. Check it out if you get the chance! A few correspondences, a Skype, and a phone call later, and Thompson was on a flight to Chicago. The premise of this episode called “Dating Like a Boss” was that Melvin would go on date with a business-oriented boss-lady who was getting tips from Steve Harvey on how to leave business out of dating. Thompson and “the boss” went on a date, but that is as far as the relationship got. He said the experience was fun, but that he’s never seen the episode. In her email, Fantozzi also noted SALO’s 10th birthday in 2018, which Thompson was happy to discuss. Thompson said, “I don’t have kids, but I can say SALO, that is my baby, that’s my child.” The journey has had its ups and downs, but Thompson is beyond proud of SALO and says of its future, “Do I want to see it grow? Yes. But, as the campus and the college grows, it’ll grow with it.” Fantozzi’s submission finished with, “From fostering leadership, networking, and professional growth opportunities, to facilitating activities including musical performances, comedy shows, glow parties, and more, Thompson plays a critical role in ensuring students at Polk State enjoy the full college experience.” Mission accomplished for the SALO director, or at least it’s a mission he takes on daily. “I think I have the best job the college because I’m there to help,” he said, “but at the same time I’m there to make sure they enjoy college, so they’ll stay in college.” Admired by colleagues and students for his ceaseless dedication to bettering the lives of the next generation of thinkers, leaders, innovators, and community contributors, Melvin Thompson is a down to earth kind of guy with big goals and a big heart for his students. He is funny, articulate, and well put together. This is why we chose Melvin Thompson as Polk’s Sexiest Man.
First, let’s elaborate that it isn’t a pristine, mint 15
BRANDON ALVARADO Arts education advocate, future political leader, well put together young man – Brandon Alvarado has clear designs for the future. “What makes Brandon sexy is his charisma, charm, intelligence, and Spanish suave,” wrote his friend, Samantha Smith, describing him as a humanitarian with future political goals. Brandon is the Education Coordinator at the Lake Wales Arts Council. His job duties include overseeing the Youth Symphony, Homeschool Fine Arts programs, Elementary Fine Arts programs, and the after-school fine arts programs, making sure that each class runs smoothly. “I coordinate with teachers on their class schedules, enrolling students, working with different schools to enroll students, and working with the Executive Director to set curriculum,” he explained. He started as the receptionist for the arts center and expressed an interest in education coordinating. “I’ve always had a passion for fine arts education. Every kid deserves access to a high-quality fine arts education,” he said. Born and raised in Lake Wales, Brandon has his sights set on a future in politics, calling it his heart and soul. What change would Alvarado like to see in our community? Fine arts education was his emphatic answer. “I feel the arts are just as important as science, math, or anything else,” he said, adding that regardless of how a student is schooled – home school, public school, private school, or charter school – a fine arts education should be available to them. “The arts bring us together as a community,” asserted Alvarado. Brandon is a member of the Museum Association of Lake Wales and the Historic District Regulatory Board. “If I don’t like what I see, it’s my opportunity to go out and change something. I don’t believe in sitting on the sidelines and complaining. It’s my responsibility to get out there and at least make some change in the community,” he explained. Brandon attributes his drive and resolve to his father. His dad immigrated from Mexico to the United States and worked for a construction company. When told by someone that he would never own his own company – he proved them wrong. He now owns a successful residential and commercial construction business of his own. Brandon said, “It’s an inspiration that he took someone who said, ‘You’re not going to be able to do it, you can’t do it,’ and he said, ‘Absolutely not, I will do it.’”
MATTHEW BRENNAN Staff Sergeant Matthew Brennan was nominated by his wife, Brooke. The Brennan’s call Winter Haven home though they don’t currently live here. Matthew’s nine-year career in the marines has moved the family all over the country, but both of their families live here, and they come home to visit three to four times a year. A graduate of Lake Region High School, Brennan joined the Marines in 2009 via RSS Winter Haven. He and Brooke met at a karaoke bar, then called The Sand Dollar. “I heard her voice and fell in love with her,” he said. “She is very caring, very strong-willed, very independent and that’s what you need in a military spouse, is independence.” Over the course of his career, Brennan has been deployed on a naval ship to five different countries and to Japan with no upcoming deployments scheduled. In her email, Brooke numbered out the reasons she chose to nominate him. The couple has four children ranging from six months to nine-years-old. Brooke’s number one reason was, “He works hard every day to give us a better life and never asks for anything in return.” Reason two read, “Despite all of his accomplishments and even the military medals he has received, he still boasts that his greatest role and success in life is being a husband and father.” Speaking to the Marine on the phone, he got a little choked up expressing that family means everything to him. “They’re my world. They’re the reason I wake up every day and go to work. I don’t think I could do it without them. Every day they put a big smile on my face and make me feel proud of what I’ve done,” he said. His dedication to family was made evident when asked what his hobbies outside of work were. Brennan said he enjoys fishing, then paused and added, “Most of my time is spent at home with family because I don’t get a whole lot of time with them.” Months spent away from family and moving across the country could be difficult for any military family, but in reason three, Brooke says, “Instead of asking to stay home and relax he always makes time and drives hours and hours to make sure the kids and I get to come home to Winter Haven for holidays and family celebrations.” The family plans to come home for a visit in July when they are in the process of moving to his next duty station. Brooke’s final reason for what makes her husband sexy? “Dress. Blues. (Need I say more?)”

DAVID POLSTON Nominated by his wife, Lynn Polston, this lifelong Polk County resident is admired by many who get the chance to know him. David Polston has been with Florida’s Natural Growers for 12 years now, working as an Electronics Technician. He also helps his wife at the insurance business they’ve owned for two years, whenever he can. Lynn described David as, “an awesome Dad, Papa, son, and son-in-law.” The two are raising their 6-year-old granddaughter, Emma, together. “He makes sure he attends all the events with her and is always spending quality time with her,” Lynn said. David beamed talking about his little joy of a granddaughter saying, “She’s a blessing.” They go on fun adventures to Disney World and Chuck E. Cheese but are just as happy to be playing in the backyard together. “Wherever we go she’s happy, she’s just a really easy kid to be with and enjoy. She’s very loving,” he said. Lynn went on about what makes her husband a candidate for Polk’s Sexiest Man, saying, “He has been a great role model for my son and is always willing to lend a hand where needed.” I asked David what it meant to him to be a role model. “Being a role model means teaching people what you know how to do and showing people how to do it properly and being someone they can look up to and admire.” He tries to be a role model for any newcomers on the job at Florida’s Natural, helping them get acclimated and spending time with them, teaching them the ins and outs of the job. Who was the role model that so inspired this admirable fella? His father. David Polston described his dad as being “multi-talented,” saying that he always did his best to make sure his kids knew how to do a variety of things. When he isn’t hanging out with his family or hard at work, David enjoys playing the drums. He’s played and toured with three different gospel groups and has played in church for a number of years as well. He’s not playing publicly at the moment but does jam out with the drum set in his music room on occasion. Lynn finished her submission gushing about her husband, “He has the kindest soul and loving heart, that is why I nominate him.”
DAVID WILSON IV Described as, “A remarkable human being who lives his life with great purpose,” by coworker Lauren Patrick, attorney David Wilson IV personifies success and leadership. The Wilson Advocacy Group, P.A. is the family law business started by Wilson’s father in 1976. David joked that this is truly the only job he’s ever had, he started by sweeping the floors in elementary school, making copies in middle school, working his way to practicing law. Wilson has made mentorship to the youth a pillar of his life. Lauren wrote, “He loves talking to them about their goals and aspirations and even showing young boys and men the proper way to tie a necktie so that they will be equipped with the tools they need to be successful, even at a young age. The kids look at David and know that anything is possible if you just plan, focus and work hard to reach your goals.” The issue is so dear to his heart because he watched countless classmates go off to college and not return to the community. This, he said, creates a void for Polk County youth because of the gap between youth and older adults. Wilson tries to teach “Persistence, dedication, education, just being an all-around good person. I believe in Karma, I believe what you put in is what you’re going to get out,” he explained. Wilson too had people in his life who inspired him to be the person he is today. Number one on that list was his father who passed away in 2010. “He was my first example of what a man should be,” remarked David. He also noted his father’s younger brother as a mentor as well as Pamela and Leslie Muma. The Muma’s are Winter Haven residents who offer a scholarship exclusive to Winter Haven High School – a scholarship David Wilson IV received. “Being able to have the opportunity to receive that scholarship and talking to him one on one gave me a different perception of success,” he said of Muma. Lauren continued in her email, “Also, we must note his personal style wherever he steps into a courtroom, he personifies the words ‘sharp dressed.’” Wilson places such emphasis on his appearance first and foremost because, “It is an example of my personality. I think I’m fun, eclectic. I think it’s a confidence thing, setting yourself apart from the crowd.” With the limited free time he has, Wilson likes cars (especially Porsche), movies, shopping, and eating. He says his goals for the future include expanding the practice and in his personal life, “Just to be better than I was yesterday.”

NEIL CURRAN “The man is basically a Polk County legend, for so much more than his pressed Cuban at his own bistro.” Chef Neil Curran (Chef Neil’s Bistro) was nominated by his daughter Emilee Rankin who admires and loves her dad for countless reasons. Curran has also achieved a significant weight loss and made lifestyle changes sparked by his older daughter, Kayla, a Registered Nurse. She talked with her dad about getting healthier. He and his wife started by walking. “We walked a quarter of a mile, then a quarter became a half, then a half became three-quarters and then a full. Next thing you know we’re walking two miles and we started jogging a little bit,” he said. Neil and his wife Emma, have been married for 32 years. “She’s my best friend,” he said. Family means everything to Curran. Last year, the tight-knit crew went to Utah for what Neil said was the best hike of their life. “That’s why I lost the weight too,” he said, “to be healthy enough to do some of those things.” “My dad, he taught me to go to work every day,” said Neil. “My father instilled hard work in me. He was a happy kind of guy and I think I get that from him. He was always in a good mood, laughing and trying to be the goofball or say something funny – that’s just how I am.”
TROY ROKER From Melbourne, Australia originally, Troy Roker started water skiing when he was only nine. The sport has been an integral part of both his personal and professional life ever since. In 2012, he was representing Australia at a competition when he met his now wife, Emily. Troy told the story of how they met with a grin, “It all snowballed from there really.” “Currently a water skier at Legoland, this sexy man has the personality to make anyone smile. Looking like a badass with all his tattoos, he’s a softy,” wrote Emily, who admittedly nominated him as a prank, but was sincere with reasons for what made Troy sexy in her eyes. Part of Emily’s submission said that his tattoos tell a story but, “Let him tell you [because] that’s right, he has a sexy Australian accent.” Troy pointed to each piece on his arm explaining its significance. One that stood out was a roulette wheel, signifying that he likes to gamble, though not in the traditional sense. When he isn’t playing a pirate for Legoland, Troy is passionate about stunt work. He’s been a stunt man for Telemundo and recently signed on to do a movie titled, The Hunt. The adrenalin junkie performs stunts with motorcycles, driving, fighting, “Anything extreme gets my heart racing,” he said. Emily said her favorite character trait in Troy is, “He lives each day like it’s his last and that’s what he goes by and I just love that about him.”
SCOTT EILERS It’s clear how much Scott Eiler’s wife, Tracy, absolutely adores her husband. “Besides his rugged good looks and imperfect infectious smile, he has an enormous heart for helping others,” she wrote. “Any given day he can be found helping friends, family or co-workers with any requests, big or small.” Scott and Tracy met when they were just 13 years old, “skating rink sweethearts,” he said. The summer romance ended. Thirteen years later, they reconnected and have been going strong ever since. Scott said, “That was it, we’re 19 years married this year.” Scott went to school for commercial art with aspirations of becoming an artist. He has worked for 27-years with The City of Winter Haven, currently as the Athletic Superintendent. In his spare time, he still creates art. He has painted paddles and donated them to Chain Life Winter Haven, done work for the Cleveland Indians, as well as an airboat prop for the benefit of a friend that had passed away. “Most of the stuff I’m doing right now is donations, but it makes me paint, where otherwise I might not have time to do it,” he said. “He also is an animal lover and is partial to rescues,” added Tracy. The pair have a dog and two cats. She also recounted a time he climbed down a manhole to rescue a kitten they had heard crying. In the conclusion she said, “He is a man of substance, honor, integrity, humility, sincerity, and kindness. He is a loyal husband of 19 years, and the best dad to 3 fur-babies.” havenmagazines.com

JERRY POLLARD JR. Jerry Pollard Jr., a lifelong Polk County resident and Assistant Sulphuric Operator for Mosaic was nominated by his wife, Antoinette. “Jerry’s personality and family-focused attitude among other traits make him a sexy man,” she wrote. He was incredibly supportive during the time Antoinette was recovering from major surgery. Happy to do so he said, “Hey, that’s my wife. I’ll always support her no matter what it is.” He was supportive of her through graduate school and was a reassuring force behind her entrepreneurial goals, even helping her select a name for the business, Pieces to Peace. Jerry is passionate about mental health because he saw family members deal with issues and wants to see the topic destigmatized. Antoinette further wrote, “Jerry demonstrates the importance of family by working a 16-hour shift, afterward coming home to make breakfast for his wife and three children to have family bonding time.” Jerry’s three children play sports and he stays involved by coaching and helping anytime he can. As for teaching them off the field, the biggest lesson Pollard tries to impart on his children is respect. He said it is paramount they learn “respect for other people and respect for themselves.” This and other lessons Jerry learned himself from his stepfather and uncle. Both men taught him to be a provider, to care for his family, and to continually educate himself throughout his life. The doting father and husband does all this, “with love, compassion, and a sexy smile,” Antoinette said in closing.
RUSSELL HERNANDEZ Russell Hernandez of Lakeland has always loved cars. He remembers falling in love with a black 1969 Corvette that he bought for $700 when he was 18. Hernandez now works for Kelley Buick GMC and has expanded his collection to 11 Jaguars and Corvettes, including the black ’69. An elaborate car collection isn’t the only thing that makes Hernandez exceptional. We received an anonymous submission describing him as a loyal friend, saying, “I believe he gives his all to a friendship. Even in tough times, he has a smile for you.” Russell named Derrick Kelley as a mentor and influence. He described the Auburndale native as a “self-made man” who taught him to, “…be proud of who you are, what you do, what you’ve accomplished.” The anonymous admirer also remarked, “He is an amazing father and is very proud of his son.” This struck a nerve with Hernandez. He got a bit choked up talking about his son, who is named after the proud papa. Sixteen-year-old Russell is on track to becoming a future commercial airline pilot. “My greatest accomplishment is being a good dad,” said Hernandez. He’s proud of everything about his son from the way he treats others to how well he articulates. “He’s my greatest accomplishment of all time,” said the father.
TOM SPIES Cheryl Davis nominated her fiance, Tom Spies because she thinks his sexiness exudes from within. “Tom is the sexiest man in Polk County because he is adored by so many. Always respectful, a gentleman with a warm heart,” she said. Tom is in pest control and in his off time enjoys golf, Words with Friends, and playing the drums. He’s on the course almost every weekend teeing up and says he’s self-taught on the drums, playing for about a year now. His favorite music to play is Bad Company. Tom and Cheryl were middle school and high school sweethearts until Tom moved away from Fort Lauderdale to Polk County some 40 years ago. They both married other people, had children, and life went on. Eight years ago, both divorced, they connected through a mutual friend on Facebook. Cheryl described their reunion as an automatic connection and she felt that they had picked up right where they left off. “I was just elated,” she said emphatically. From the start of their reunion, Tom was easy to talk to, he and Cheryl shared life experiences, recalled old memories, and eight years later, that spark hasn’t diminished. “He is the same happy, loving, most affectionate man I have ever known,” Cheryl wrote. “Tom is truly a unique soul.” As the two lovebirds sat talking about each other and how they met, Cheryl said, “In my opinion, he is the gentlest man I have ever met. He’s always smiling.” And he was smiling, the whole time with a happy demeanor and easygoingness about him. Tom and Cheryl say fate brought them together and agreed that they were soul mates. Cheryl is currently back in school working towards a degree and says that Tom has been very supportive of her. 19

The Puck Drops in Polk When Paul and Nanette Granville’s son Jack was five, he attended a birthday party at an ice rink. There he spotted the George Jenkins hockey team practicing and was so enthralled he asked his parents if he could learn to skate. Jack had tried other sports but nothing stuck – until ice hockey. He went from learning the basics of how to skate and play to now being on three teams, one of which, the Tampa Bulls, he plays along some of the children of Tampa Bay Lightning players and is coached by former Tampa Bay Lightning player, Vincent Lecavalier. This is where the Granville’s desire to give their son and other local kids a closer option to skate and their relationship with the Lightning began. The couple is now working with the Lightning to build the Lakeland Ice Arena at the Junction of I-4 on West Memorial Boulevard. Granville explained that his partnership with the Lightning is part of their initiative to grow the sport of hockey in the state. The Lightning has a ball hockey initiative where they put 100,000 havenmagazines.com
hockey sticks in the hands of 100,000 kids across the state for free and build in a 12-week program at their school to teach them how to play ball hockey according to Granville. The popularity of that program spurred them to build ten permanent ball hockey locations across the state. Their on-ice initiatives include teaching kids to skate and play ice hockey.
to know the community has been important to Granville who says he has met with everyone from a Winter Haven doctor with a synthetic ice sheet at his home, to former presidents of skating associations who’ve retired in Lakeland, to many of the players and skaters in the area. LIA will have two ice sheets and the ball hockey rink. The 50,000 square foot main building, formerly Interstate Lanes Bowling Alley, will house a full NHL-size ice sheet, a restaurant and concession stand, large tables built with the wood from the old bowling lanes, party rooms, skate rentals, Pro shop, and locker rooms. The second building will also have an NHL-sized ice sheet with arena style seating surrounding it. Also on the property will be what Paul called ‘off-ice activities’ such as summer and afterschool camps.
“Our goal will be to provide a location in Polk County where those kids can then come to us and we can take care of them and continue their development and introduce them to ice skating or continue with them with ball hockey,” said Granville. With so many Lightning fans living in the county, Paul said, “They (the Lightning) want to give back to that community that has supported them by being here for them and being here for the kids.”
Lakeland Ice Arena will have a focus on hockey, figure skating, as well as public skating. Granville said he wants to see everyone on the ice having fun, from the three-year-old girl dreaming of becoming a professional figure skater to hockey players, couples
The arena is expected to open around June of this year. When we met with the Granville’s at LIA, the renovations were in full swing, though Paul said he’s been preparing for the arena for the better part of the year. Getting 20

Along with allowing for more skate time for local players, skaters, and the public, and building a community around ice sports and leisure in Polk County, Lakeland Ice Arena will be home to several hockey teams. Both George Jenkins High School hockey team which is comprised of several high schools in Polk County and the Florida Southern College hockey team will have a home at LIA. Granville is most excited to see his son Jack take the ice for the first time when the arena is completed, along with all the other kids in Polk County that LIA and the Tampa Bay Lightning are doing this for. The Best Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy March is here! I wanted to take a pause and think about the best ways to keep your heart and mind healthy. I’ve curated a list of ideas to keep you feeling well. 1. Community One of the most essential and equally difficult parts of life is having a good community. Friendships are hard. They shift and change through the years. I’m guessing we’ve all had healthy relationships we hold on to, and some toxic ones that get left in years passed. Probably, your friends from high school are different from the friends in your life after having a third baby. Everyone’s timelines move at a different pace, and sometimes they just don’t sync up. This is sad sometimes, but it shouldn’t discourage us from pursuing a community we really love. Do you have a community you trust? If not, we can just be patient with big hopes that our hard working at friendships will be rewarded. Here’s some thoughts to ponder when it comes to knowing if you’ve found a good community:
Do you know who’d you call if you needed help in the middle of the night? Do you have friends who know where the water cups are in your house? How often do you laugh when with your community? 2. Rest This may seem to contradict the first point, but it’s really a balance of things that make us healthy. Along with having community, we need time to slow down and not work. Alone time is so healthy, so is making sure we sleep long enough, and do some things just for ourselves. I always try to ask myself when was the last time I painted something for no one to see. It’s so important to recharge in the best ways for us.
3. Make Something
5. Hope
I guess this one can seem a bit obvious coming from an artist, but I think everyone can make something beautiful! It doesn’t have to be a song or dance. When the last time you made your bed? What about making a meal you were excited to eat? I think we should all have a practicing of making things throughout our day.
I doubt many people implement practices of hope in their daily routines. It’s a different thing to do for sure. But what if we wrote down at the end of every day something that is giving us hope about tomorrow? I wonder if we’d sleep better and wake up a little nicer. I try to surround myself with art, words, and colors that keep me hopeful. The quirky and unique, the positive words, and the yellowcolored decor in my space bring a smile to my face and remind me that is today is rough, that doesn’t mean tomorrow will be too.
4. Wellness I think this one is a bit of a buzzword these days. Self-help, self-care, and wellness all seem to be floating around on the covers of bestsellers. But what if we aren’t well? What if we are in a place where we are unable to take care of ourselves? I think that’s where a different look of wellness takes place. I’m not an expert on this at all, but I do think there is a really disciplined form of wellness that seems to change more than the tasks of the day by really changing the heart. Feeding your body what it needs, moving your body, laughing, stretching, and sleeping. There’s a simpler look at wellness and it really feels good.
Here are some restful ideas: take a walk, ride a bike, drink a yummy coffee, watch a movie you’ve been wanting to see, read a book, grow a plant, take a bath or shower, light some candles, and close your eyes for a bit.
21
The heart is messy and hard to take care of, but it’s the hard toiling in the dirt that produces flowers. I hope for everyone that 2019 would be there year of a big garden! And I hope to continue to make art that helps you remember there is always hope.

Bubbles & Brews Inspired by the romance and charm of the European Prosecco and mobile craft beer bars, Bubbles & Brews is the first of its kind in Florida. Franchise owners of Get Cozy Vintage Mobile Bars, Kevin and Margaret Gorey are in the infancy of their business, but the unique concept has piqued community buzz.
Instagram” as my editor described it, has all the loveliness and quirk any ideal selfieworthy spot can muster. It’s essentially a photobooth with a fully functioning bar. To get the perspective of someone familiar with the current temperature of event planning, we asked Laura Ashton Helm, owner and lead designer of Ashton Events why this is such an attractive concept. “It’s an interactive element for their day,” she said. “I think the more you can customize and specialize your bar, that’s definitely something that our clients are interested in and this is a really fun spin on that, especially in the summer when everything is really hot, having something cold and refreshing and also super cute – it’s a big win.”
After twenty years in the corporate world, Margaret was ready for a fresh start at something that would allow her to go out and meet people and contribute to some of their happiest times alongside them. The idea of a vintage European Prosecco cart intrigued Margaret. She saw the adorable concepts across Instagram and Facebook and thought this was the fun entrepreneurial venture she was looking for. And also, as Margaret put it, “Who doesn’t like champagne?”
The ridiculously cute Piaggio mobile cart was so small, it was easily maneuverable through the gates and onto the patio of Haus 820 for our photo shoot and can even fit seamlessly through a set of double doors for indoor events. This particular Piaggio had a past life as an espresso cart in Italy according to the Gorey’s.
With options to be rented by itself and staffed by a private caterer or venue server or with a full-service package, Bubbles & Brews can be tailored to any event. They bring the adorable mobile cart and the client, vendor, or event venue provides the drinks of their choice. “At corporate and private events every guest will interact with the bar. This simple interaction can be a memorable event many times over with our Bubbles & Brews Prosecco vans and Craft Beer trucks. We are serving prosecco and other wines on tap, craft beers and batch cocktails from a Piaggio Ape. Imported directly from Italy. Transformed in the United States into a one-of-a-kind bar that is always a focal point of the event. It is just plain fun and memorable,” said Rachel Lintvet, Founder of Get Cozy Vintage Mobile Bars.
The vehicle opens up to reveal a bar with seven taps. The bar space around the cart is perfect to dress up with decorations and drinkware for your event but is also beautiful on its own. Some of the taps are cold for chilled drinks or ambient for others such as red wines. The temperature can be powered by gas or electric according to Kevin who also pointed out the LED lights with the ability to change color to compliment your party scheme. This “God’s gift to
From beers, ciders, wines, and batch cocktails this can be a dazzling addition to any wedding, shower, company event, birthday, or anniversary. With requests coming in from across the state from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale, the Gulf Coast and Central Florida, Bubbles & Brews looks to be off to a busy start. Book them soon for your next event to be the talk of the town for parties to come! As of now, they are the only one in Florida and it’s booking fast.
Though it is a completely different industry, Margaret has been able to draw from her corporate experience for things like design and customer service for her vintage mobile bar business. The Polkbased locale works for Gorey as well. She loves the central location, and says, “It’s nice to be part of a growing community.”

Ice cream + cookie = a good MOO’ d Small batch, handmade ice cream sandwich company, A Cow Named MOO, started by Sarah and Patrick Mulcahy is in new hands, but rest assured the same chewy, creamy goodness lives on with its new owners.
Grajales trained with Patrick and Sarah to learn all the delicious secrets that have made MOO a hot-day dessert staple in Polk County. Known for their small batch, organic ingredients, and seasonally changing menu of unique flavors, Kaley wanted to keep the classics and experiment with new flavors.
A SWEET OPPORTUNITY When Black & Brew’s Chris McArthur was opening their newest location of the coffee shop on Lake Morton, he wanted to offer fresh, made in house baked goods. When the opportunity for A Cow Named MOO came along, it fit in perfectly with his vision explained Kaley Odom, Operations Manager for the ice cream sandwich company.
One of their most popular flavors is the Sailors Chocolate which has been a staple from the start according to Odom. A dark chocolate ice cream with hints of whiskey encased by a dark chocolate sea salt cookie is absolute sin in a dessert. Another that you’ll find at Black & Brew year-round is the Classic – a chocolate chip cookie sandwiching creamy vanilla bean ice cream. A staple flavor she plans to bring back for the summer is a cornmeal cookie base with blackberry ice cream.
McArthur approached Kaley, a lifelong baker and three-year barista at Black & Brew’s downtown location, to handle the baked goods and manage A Cow Named MOO. “I’ve baked since I was little, I’ve always loved it,” said Odom. She took culinary classes all throughout high school, eventually deciding to create an Instagram with botanically themed goodies such as succulent cupcakes and had a lot of fun with the venture.
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK We asked Kaley about the process of experimenting with new flavors. “Oh, that’s my favorite part,” she laughed. She mentioned working on a potential menu addition for spring – carrot cake. They started by roasting carrots to put into the ice cream which she said came out with a stunning orange tint and incredible flavor. Fingers crossed it makes it in the menu. (Spoiler alert: it did!)
“I knew I wanted to pursue [culinary] because I find I’m always happiest when I’m creating,” she said. She went to school for culinary management focusing more on cooking. She realized something was missing and discovered her true passion was baking.
They are also working to perfect their vegan and gluten-free option. “That’s one thing we wanted to try to do is have a vegan, gluten-free option on the menu all year-round,” remarked Kaley. MOO has had this option for special events in the past, but Odom says they are a bit trickier to make. They’ve been working hard to give them permanency on the menu.
Skip to the opening of Black & Brew’s second location and the opportunity to manage the in-house baked goods and A Cow Named MOO. “I was really excited when he offered this to me because it’s something that truly makes me happy,” said Kaley. “I just like making people happy through food – that brings me joy.”
In addition to some exciting upcoming flavors, Odom has also worked to brighten up their packaging with designs from local artist, Twenty Seven. “We love her designs,” said Kaley of Twenty Seven’s Jenna Cherry. Odom hopes to work

Your Beard is Safe with Mason Danger “Nurture your nature,” says Shane Osborne, the man behind the beard at Mason Danger Beard Company, a company focused on creating better, natural solutions for beard care. Shane, a full-time occupational therapist, describes himself as a man with bad skin and a big beard. He discussed all the trials that come with finding the perfect balance in a routine to properly take care of both. As his beard grew, so too did his need to take care of it, but he found that many products that could take care of his beard agitated his skin. This is because, even though those companies use oils that may be natural, their scents are produced with chemicals that can be harmful to the skin.
Beach balm contains coconut oil and citrusy smells. The seasonal Java Balm contains coffee essential oil. The all-natural company also sells beard wash that softens your beard without adding any chemicals like normal shampoo will. As an added bonus, Osborne says it smells great. In addition to the website, where the majority of sales are made, Osborne also started getting his products into local stores. Currently, Mason Danger products, including the beard balms and shampoos, can be found in Rafa Natural, Lakeland Barber Company, and Skully’s Mobile Barber, among various other stores around town. In the future, Shane hopes to develop natural hair products and a tattoo balm. He says that he won’t put a product into production until he has tested it and is completely satisfied. This means that while these new products may take a while to eventually come out, they will match the quality of his other products. He is also hoping to continue to grow his brand and get into more barbershops in Polk County, Tampa, and Orlando.
Through trial and error, Osborne developed his own beard oil that would give him cleaner skin and softer hair. His research led him towards jojoba oil, a substance only one molecule different from the natural oils produced by skin. He found that the beard oil worked exactly how he wanted, and generously gave some to his friends who eventually convinced him to start selling it. Buying the smallest amounts of ingredients at a time, Shane started filling orders made on his Etsy page. Orders began to increase for all of the products he had for sale, including the original, Haunted Forest. In order to grow more, Osborne decided to start doing events, and before he knew it, he was at Central Florida Throwdown, an annual CrossFit competition held in an airplane hangar. After this, Mason Danger, which is named after Osborne’s son, began showing up at more and more events and was quickly gaining in popularity, but he knew that the company needed to reach a larger market.
For men who are new to beard care, Shane suggests Mason Danger’s Got Your 6ix beard oil, the company’s biggest seller. He claims that trying nicer products can be better long-term and can help enhance health and appearance. He knows that men may be reluctant to go the extra mile to take care of their appearance, and he hopes that his products can convince men that grooming themselves is an important part of being happy and healthy. Find them on Facebook @masondangerbeardco Or go online to www.masondangerbeardco.com
Mason Danger bottles last 3-4 months, and in order to continue selling products, more potential customers had to be reached so that there were always new people in need of beard products. Shane taught himself basic code and created a website. He launched it only a year and a half ago, allowing his products to be accessed nationwide. At this point, he knew that it was important to turn Mason Danger Beard Co. into a lifestyle brand to keep customers coming back. He started selling t-shirts and hats, and began packing the bottles of beard oil in koozies, which the native Minnesotan also referred to as huggers, instead of bubble wrap. Other beard products started to pop up as well. The beard balm, which works like pomade and keeps the whole beard in order, comes in three different scents. The aptly named Prohibition is infused with Jack Daniels barrel wood, while the Life’s a

A New Twist on Old Classics For anyone who’s ever thought they don’t like gin or whiskey or other strong spirits, stop by Revival in Lakeland and prepare to have your mind changed! Owner, Jeannie Weaver has worked to make the downtown Lakeland craft cocktail bar an inclusive space where cocktail snobs and newbs alike can find their next favorite cocktail. Weaver grew up in Fort Meade before moving to Lakeland about nine years ago. She went to college at USF and got a job in marketing immediately after the recession had ravaged the economy. A friend’s boyfriend suggested Jeannie give bartending a try, thinking she’d be a good fit because she “seemed to get penalized for having a personality.” She went to work for Linksters Tap Room for seven years. She spoke highly of the establishment, but said, “It just wasn’t the avenue for the things I wanted to do. It’s a sports bar, no one really wants a gin fizz over there.” “My boyfriend is actually the one who really encouraged me to open the bar,” explained Weaver. This push from boyfriend, Ryan Lopez, gave Jeannie the motivation to sign the paperwork for the LDDA and put a deposit down on a building in the Fall of 2017. She pulled out a photo album documenting the progress of the renovations they did on the space until July of 2018 when they opened. The building was a blank canvas for Weaver, an empty box of space devoid of color and character. Jeannie got to work putting her personality and a melding of inspiration from some of her favorite craft cocktail bars into the establishment. A BRUNETTE WALKS INTO A BAR… Weaver and Lopez have been to six continents together. While traveling, they would designate a day to do what he wanted to do – admire the architecture of churches and historical buildings – and a day to do what she wanted to do – visit craft cocktail bars and bookstores. Three places stood out in the owner’s mind for the inspiration behind Revival’s unpretentious lounge atmosphere. The first, called Peche, is an absinthe bar in Austin, another, Percy’s and Co. is an apothecary bar in Seattle on Ballard Avenue where Jeannie lived for a time, and the last was a bookstore that doubled

as a champagne and cocktail bar, Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, in downtown Asheville. Touches from each of these made their way into Revival’s mood. That blank canvas is now decorated with a large wall of little diamond-shaped book shelves and richly colored suede furniture contrasting sharply with the seemingly old woodgrain of the bar. It’s a comfortable place and that’s how Jeannie likes it. “The building is still kind of taking shape,” said Weaver. “We’re going to be doing some changes to the décor to make it more cohesive in the next month.” A REVIVAL OF CLASSIC COCKTAILS The name Revival stems from another favorite trio, three of her favorite bands – Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jamestown Revival, and The Revivalists. Though these bands had an influence over the bar’s moniker, Jeannie said, “Revival, to me, the name came from a revival of classic cocktails.” It was her goal to put an innovative spin on classic cocktails. As a way to introduce cocktails in a different way to its patrons, Revival has a Weekly Revival every Monday which Weaver says varies between a classic recipe that they have modified or a creation all her own. Other Revival weekly happenings include Monday Cocktail Flights that “allow our guests to try a range of a chosen spirit to allow them to taste the spectrum of each from sweet to spirit forward and which allows them to change their palate,” Test Drink Tuesday, Tiki Thursdays, and perhaps the coolest of them all – Euro Sundays. On Euro Sundays, guests can expect French Aperitifs, champagne and Prosecco cocktails, an absinthe fountain, olive and cheese boards, and variations of Bloody Mary’s. Wednesday’s will be reserved for a new idea Jeanie is putting into motion on March 13th – Cocktail Classes. “They will learn the history of the spirit, bartending techniques, and three to four drinks that feature the spirit that allow them to showcase what they’ve learned,” said Weaver. She hopes these classes will move people from their comfort zones into trying something new – or a new way of drinking a spirit they didn’t think they liked. “We want
30
to be their gateway,” said Jeannie. “We want you to come in here thinking you don’t like something and when you leave, you do like something. That’s what I feel we’ve been really good at.” BOOKS AND BOOZE The Revival bookshelves are speckled with a selection of books and Jeannie herself owns some 100 plus cocktail books. The self-described “book nerd” was also glad to have her bar host an LGBTQ book club that meets once a month. This didn’t only please her inner book nerd but was in line with the accessibility and acceptance she was aiming for the bar to have. That accessibility comes not only in the form of an open door to everyone but also in the price gamut of spirits she offers. You can order well whiskey for under $5 or a shot of Boss Hog for $62. There’s something for everyone to indulge in. Jeannie is happiest when she’s creating cocktails. “I do like being behind the bar, but I like creating the cocktails because that’s where I get the most source of pride from,” she said. Cocktail inspiration comes in mysterious ways to Jeannie. The Revival owner said she works better under pressure and that things sometimes come to her in weird spaces like when she’s washing her hair, flipping through food magazines or browsing the aisles of the grocery store. That’s where the idea for Revival’s Cookie Butter Martini came to her. The research for that drink was particularly fun because who doesn’t want to eat jars of cookie butter? DRINK ME, I’M IRISH In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we asked Jeannie to come up with a few lucky cocktails to share. She did not disappoint with the varied flavors she chose and of course green color, which didn’t require any artificial color. Order one up the next time you’re at Revival or make them yourself for St. Patty’s Day! Revival 119 South Kentucky Avenue, Lakeland FB @revivallakeland IG @revivallakeland
“QUEEN BASIC” AVOCADO MARGARITA 1 ½ oz. El Jimador Tequila 1 avocado ¾ oz. lime juice ½ oz. Triple Sec ½ oz. Agave Nectar Cut the flesh of one avocado into small pieces so there is more surface area for the tequila to infuse with. In a jar, add tequila and avocado pieces to infuse. Shake from time to time and then strain avocado pieces out after a few hours. You’re left with an avocado-flavored tequila. In a cocktail shaker, add tequila with the other ingredients, shake vigorously, strain into a salt-rimmed margarita glass with a lime wheel as a garnish. 31
‘MATCHA WANT FROM ME 1 1/2 oz Tanqueray Gin ½ oz. matcha simple syrup ½ oz lemon juice One egg white Dehydrated lime wheel In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients (minus the garnish) and give it a hard, dry shake for 15 seconds. A dry shake is necessary because shaking the cocktail without ice and at a higher temperature allows more aeration and allows the drink to emulsify to produce a thick, pretty foam for the top of the cocktail. Add Ice and shake again for another 15 seconds to allow the cocktail to cool down and then pour into the cocktail glass of your choice. I choose a Nick and Nora glass because its not only elegant and classic, but it prevents you from spilling it as easily as a modern-day martini glass.
GIRL SCOUT COOKIE Equal parts (3/4 oz.): Kahlua Baileys Wondermint Schnapps 3 drops mint bitters Shake with ice Serve in a shot glass rimmed with sugar.
